Listen to and learn hundreds of bird songs and calls from across the continental United States, with up to 34 seconds of song for each bird, and alternative recordings for some birds.

Choose a state or group of states then sort the bird sounds in a variety of ways. Sort by song style to compare birds that hoot and coo, with birds with high pitched songs, or you might like to sort the birds by commonness, so you can listen to the most common ones first, then move on to less frequent backyard visitors. More advanced birders may like to listen to birds from a particular habitat, such as forest or freshwater for example. You can make lists of your favourites so that you can find them quickly.

Use the quiz to test your memory. Answer fast to earn a score multiplier and get on the high score table. Experienced birders can use the custom quiz to help distinguish and learn similar songs.

And when you need a rest, try the slideshow feature - choose which birds to include, maybe add background bird song, then simply relax. If you want to continue learning while you relax, switch the voiceover on and hear the name of the bird announced at the end of each clip. This is also a good way of competing with the family - who can say the name of the bird first?

Bird names are included in Spanish and French.

Chirp! Bird Songs & Calls USA Positive Reviews

I love this app!I came for the quiz...it’s fun and has improved my ability to identify birds by song. But I also really like the “listen” section. Very easy to use and it has helped me figure out birds that I can hear but not see. There is another app I use that plays a greater variety of songs for each species, but it is a little harder to use, in my opinion..Version: 2.2.2

Good app, but needs some improvement. This app is good, but it needs some improvement in two major areas. First, it needs more birds. I downloaded the app so I could improve my birdsong ID skills. But I can’t do that when it has only four species of shorebirds, which include one species of gull, one species of sandpiper, and one species of plover, plus the American Woodcock, no species of swallows, and no species of Egrets, to name a few. Quite frustrating. On a similar note the Level 3 quiz that says it’s supposed to include 50 birds, actually only includes about 10-20. If you took the quiz several times, most of the time it would only quiz you on the same 10 birds. Again, frustrating if you’re trying to learn bird songs. This app might be good for a beginner to learn bird songs, but you will eventually get to a point where your skills and demands of the app will exceed its limitations..Version: 2.2.5

Good but also frustratingIt’s a great concept but frustrating in practice. I was mostly looking for for a way to learn the birdsongs of the rich bird life in my area. While there is an option to make a selection for a slideshow to include your own regularly seen birds, there is no way to save this selection as a list, despite there being a button for “Saved lists” which remains frustratingly blank. Pre selected lists such as “Habitat” and Region miss many many local birds and include too many not found in my locale. Maryland and Delaware are not in included in regional lists for some reason. The overall list is also rather incomplete. Although they probably have to stick to more commonly found birds due to file size constraints, more than a third of birds found in my own neighborhood are not represented. If you are ok with simply learning what the app offers, then you will probably enjoy it just fine..Version: 3.2.2

Good and could be betterThis is a fantastic app for learning songs and calls. Separating birds by region, the different levels of quizzes, especially the quiz on your chosen favorites is great. It would be even better if you could make several lists beyond one favorite. For instance, I now know many songs but would like to make a separate list for just calls since those are more difficult. I hope that’s an easy addition to this fantastic app!.Version: 2.2.5

Few winter calls, only songs.Clear audio that can be narrowed down to your locality. The slideshow groupings are good. However, living in South Florida, I am interested in the calls of our winter migrants. There are very few calls on the app, only songs. Do not buy this app if you want to learn the birds’ winter calls, especially the warblers. Plus, you can make a custom quiz but you cannot save it. What’s the point? If I want to create another quiz, I must clear the list. I can’t go back to the first quiz, I have to create it again every time..Version: 2.2.1

Having App 'Issues'This has been a great app. I've had it many years ...as of Recents I'm having issues with Chirp USA , upon opening the app it often goes immediately to settings?? and can be difficult to get to the home menu. I have already made sure my settings are all as I wish. I believe I have once uninstall the app and reinstalled was not a lot of improvement.. I may need to shop for another app similar as this once was very easy to navigate and user-friendly.Version: 3.2.2

Pretty much what I wanted.I have to prime my brain for bird songs each spring and this gives me a good way to review what I haven’t heard for many months. Still learning the app: would like to be able to edit the geographical groups to delete, e.g., waterfowl or waders. Seems I’m able to do that in the slideshow mode, but not geo. Maybe I’ll figure it out. The quick quizzes are fun & probably useful. All in all, just as good, if not better than the CDs I’ve gotten accustomed to..Version: 2.2.3

This app is awesome but needs some improvementsI absolutely love this app, but a few things it needs more of are •More precise locations (I live in Maryland, so the fact that it includes some far northern birds in my region on this app isn’t very helpful) •More winter calls •A few more species (especially hummingbirds and shorebirds) •A season selection option (for example there would be a button in the title screen settings that says “Choose Season” that would let you choose 1 of the 4 seasons and then once you press listen, it lists the birds for that season in your [more precise 👆] area) I am not at all saying that this app is bad, but I would just like to let the developers know that it could use these improvements Thank you, Forrest.Version: 2.2.2

Very helpful for learningI homeschool my children and we’re learning about birds and bird calls. So far, we’ve loved the app very much. When we’re outside, we do our best to listen to the birds. Then we’ll look it up in the app. We’ve so far identified some of the common birds in our front yard. Very happy with it, thank you very much..Version: 2.2.2

Well organizedIt is very easy to sort based in different characteristics, like commonness or bird type or type of song. I also like the swipe feature to get to the next bird and I really enjoy the quizzes at different levels of difficulty..Version: 2.2.3

Very helpful!Definitely helpful in learning process. Could add more mnemonics and also taxonomic orders - including showing that info in slideshow and quiz views. Also would be very helpful if you could have multiple lists (rather than just "all" and "favorites" - you could then more easily focus on difficult calls/songs, regions or families..Version: 2.2.1

Nice programI have really enjoyed this program. It’s easy to search & has a nice picture of each bird. Bird songs are great & abundant, though some of the bird calls are missing. All of the most common birds are there, and a few have more than one song as an option. I recommend it for an easy to use program..Version: 2.2.2

It stopped workingThis was a fun app while it worked but I think it has a timed fail date like just about everything else Apple or Apple affiliated. I received a message with instructions regarding how to get my app back up and it worked. Still a fan. This app is fun..Version: 2.2.5

I love this app!I've had this app forever, from when it was free. Sadly the free version no longer works, but I'm willing to pay for this app. I have several cats, and one of them hates bird songs! This app is too realistic for her, she's absolutely certain that there are birds in my phone. A+!.Version: 2.2.1

Great way to learnI’ve been trying to learn to identify birds by sound and this is really helping. I enjoy playing the quiz games. I wish you could save your favorites instead of choosing them each time, so you could practice certain ones. I enjoy that you can choose regions. Overall I think it’s a great app..Version: 2.2.3

Bird fun!I love this app. Also my son learned all of the birds in our by our region by using this app when he was three or four. He could not read yet so I would help with telling him the names but he could hear a bird and tell me exactly what it was.Version: 2.2.1

Is good. However it could have more variety of some calls. I’m still having fun with it. And the birds will call back. Crows have a such a wide variety of communication and I wish it was reflected here..Version: 2.2.1

Fabulous & FlawlessOne of THE best Apps ever. Well designed from start to finish. Brilliant. The designers knew exactly how users would want to use this app. I especially love the sorting feature. THANK YOU for the most pleasant app experience ever. BEAUTIFULLY DONE!.Version: 2.2.5

I LOVE this appI have used this app to help my grandchildren be aware of the birds that are around him. I knew it was successful when my three year old grandson said, “Listen, Grama, it’s a black-capped chickadee.” I have recommended this to anyone who will listen..Version: 2.2.1

Real bird songsI really like the app but the songbird search doesn’t work. Needs a little improvement..Version: 3.2.2

Fun tool for learningTry it! It only really helps you identify one certain call from each bird during the quizzes, not all the different variations. I love it though, it's been helpful in identifying birds in my area as a beginner. It's not an expert guide but it's certainly fun and pretty rewarding..Version: 2.2.2

Love it but can’t use it snymoreI’ve loved this app, but it no longer works on my iphone. When I try, I get an error message saying the app needs to be updated to work with this version of IOS. Boo!.Version: 2.2.5

Won’t openWhat’s going on with the app? If I try to open it kicks me right out. Not happy. I really enjoyed the app when working..Version: 2.2.5

Chirp!Awesome app. Easy swipe immediately provides song for quick reference. Favorite app so far and I've tried several..Version: 2.2.2

Plugger734 solid stars. The missing 5th star is for the the missing feature of identifying the sound of a nearby bird .. like the app “Shazam” does for songs heard on the radio .. that would make this app a perfect 5..Version: 2.2.2

My chirp reviewI love it!! I’m 67 years old and what I thought was a robin I was hearing is actually a northern cardinal. I love to learn new things and I love bird watching. This app has increased my enjoyment greatly!.Version: 2.2.2

I love this app!In Alaska in the winter, there are few birds — mainly ravens, chickadees, and magpies. I miss the cheery sound of song birds, and this app lets me hear a wide variety of bird calls..Version: 2.2.2
