NHL Positive Reviews

Drastic improvementsOriginal Review: This year they dropped support for ps3 and Xbox 360. Due to this I was given the opportunity to experience how terrible using the app to watch a replay is. No period start selection. Absolutely garbage scrubbing controls. The -10 sec button often reverts back to the beginning of the game. The one positive is the streaming feed has less jumps and quality drops than the console apps had during live games. Almost forgot the constant notifications telling you if you want to see the notification content to turn off “hide scores”. How about not sending score notifications instead when hide scores is set? Update: The casting video player is fantastic. 10 second buttons have been replaced with 30 second buttons that actually work. The slider is much smoother and loads the video perfectly and at the correct time that is showing when you lift your finger up. Would still love to see the addition of the period start selection and ceasing score notifications when scores are turned off but I’m very happy with the recent changes..Version: 10.3.1

Crashes more than Chris Kreider does into GoaliesI use this app a lot to stream games because Xfinity is way too expensive and the games aren’t in HD... But if there was any other reliable options to watch I’d probably go with that. The NHL app works half of the time which is why I gave it three stars and no more. When the app works it’s awesome, 95% of the time the stream is clear and the other 5% is just because of our internet so I can’t blame them on that. I love how it’s set up where you can see standings, League news and news about your single team! BUT... And this is a big but, IT CRASHES HALF THE TIME, I’ll think to myself, “HMMM I wonder what the scores are tonight” and these are the three things that happen... It either just won’t load, the app will load and you’ll see the home screen for a second and then it’ll crash OR when I press to see the scores it crashes. I don’t mind having to google scores but isn’t the point of the app to make it easier on the users to have info and entertainment easily accessible? Also like 15% of the time when we try to stream it’ll say we’re streaming the game but it’ll just show the two team logos and the NHL shield in the middle and will do nothing... Again when the app works it’s great but I find it not working A LOT.Version: 10.3.4

NHL RESPECT up in hereI have seen NHL players fight for social causes and I have seen them express their pain and their empathy for communities of ALL backgrounds. But I have never seen them interrupt games or disrespect our national anthem. They are the only professional sport who plays in front of their fans and does not force personal political views on people who spend good money to watch their favorite teams play. I support every one of their causes no matter what, and I know they support positive energy from their fans bc this league comes to play, and win. All of that deserves 5 stars on itself BUT this app is also very user friendly and informative especially for my home team when I am out on the road. Thank you NHL for keeping it sports and thank you to the developers who make this app possible. The behavior of the league and teams makes it really easy for me to choose the only sports app I will carry on my phone and the app makes it super friendly and easy for me to keep!! #NHL #GoAvsGo!!!.Version: 12.4.2

Decent App but FaultyI love the layout of the app, the scores section and playoff section is clean and easy to follow. I also like the addition of the videos section under latest. My issue is with crashing. I will be reading an article and halfway through it will crash and/or send me back to the main loading page of the app, causing me to have to scroll through and find the article and pick back up where I left off. Very frustrating. I used to be able to easily cast games and recaps to my chrome cast. I could select watch live and it would give me the live broadcast. Now if I’m trying to watch a live game (I’m an NHL TV subscriber) it will start from the beginning and not let me pick up with the game live. Also, if I do stream to a device from my phone, it will crash when I’m done and I will have to uninstall and reinstall to get it to work again, which means I have to log in, select my settings and preferences again. All in all, it is a great app for articles (even if you have to keep going back to them), videos (as long as your not streaming them) and general use. Highly recommend using the app on any other device than mobile to utilize any video feature..Version: 10.3.4

Love My PanthersMy family and I have had Florida Panther season tickets for over 25 years. We have been through all the ups and downs with this team. At the moment it’s amazing to be a Cats fan. We have the most dedicated ownership that has revitalized our franchise and brought a level of stability it has never seen before. The Panthers are now a team that future Hall of Famers and the leagues elite choose to seek out to join our incredible young roster of current and future all-stars in their quest for a multi year Stanley Cup run. We have a management group lead by men of such integrity from our President to GM to Head Coach, they all lead this group of outstanding young stars on the ice and even better stars in our community!! It’s very easy to love the Panthers whole organization including all the wonderful people who work for the team like our account manager Austin to the sweet ladies who make the custom jerseys and all of the other staff that make the games an amazing experience each night..Version: 13.2.0

Read this, it will take 2 minutes. To start off, I love all American sports, Like Basketball, Football, Baseball, and, of course, Hockey. I have the NBA app, NFL app, MLB app, and this NHL app. Of all of these, I can safely say that NHL has got my favroite set-up. It's easy to use and really worth it if you're a fan of Hockey. What I don't like is that you can't watch Hockey in the app, you need either Bally Sports for your location, or ESPN+. I do like how they post a 4-10 minute video about all of the goals scored the previous day, and I like the standings section. Another feature I like is that it allows you to customize the Icon you have for the app. You can either have a certian team or the NHL Logo. It's really cool and easy to change. Overall I say get this app, it's good, easy to use, and really helpful for keeping up with scores and the "Gameflow" Feature is nice, too. Thanks for reading! Have a nice day..Version: 12.6.2

Amazing App, Also An Idea For The AppNHL is just an amazing app, you can watch live games, listen to commentary of live games, check standings, check players stats, check what happened in previous years, it’s just so amazing! I also have an idea for this app. Maybe you could add betting? My idea of it is that someone would create a bet, invite people to the bet (maybe you could add accounts too?) and they could add a winning prize, and a losing pay amount. (If you do add this, make sure to not let people scam on bets.) But that’s just an idea. If I could give this app 6 stars, I would. I don’t know how you wouldn’t like this app, but everyone has their own opinion. Keep up the good work, team! 👍.Version: 13.2.0

Great game & news updates but in-app use needs workLove this for game and news updates on my favorite teams and players (much better than the ESPN app), however the clunkiness of some features while in-app leave me frustrated. I'm no tech expert but I think it's just a lack of a little "polish". Might sound nit-picky but main reason for me only giving three stars is the video player. If the app is going to notify me about all these awesome videos to watch, then I feel the video player should be capable of showing them. More often than not I'm sitting, starting at a black screen, waiting for an ad to play, then again staring at a black screen, waiting for the video. There's so many apps out there capable of playing videos quickly and easily, why can't the NHL app do the same? I know it's not an issue of my cellular service. Please fix the video player! 5 stars in it for you after it's fixed!.Version: 10.5.0

It’s a Solid App... With a Few FlawsI have been a long time flyers fan and I downloaded this app to follow the team better. It allows me to do so by notifying me about scores and news articles, but there are some flaws. For example the “free games” on nhl premium (which is a scam anyway) are not free for everyone. Also, sometimes when I open the app while game is going on, it gives me a notification that I can watch a game live on NHL premium. However I CANNOT ACCESS ANYTHING ON THE APP until I click on the notification which sends me to a page to buy a subscription to NHL premium. It’s fine if it’s a one time glitch, but it is every time. There are also some smaller things, like how stats don’t include hit leaders, but the radio feature is nice and overall it is very customizable. So 4 stars, it could be better but it does its job.Version: 10.2.0

Keeps me up to dateThe NHL app has allowed me to keep up with pro hockey even though I live in an area where the sport isn’t followed much. The app allows me to customize what I want to be notified of for each of the five teams I follow, so if I only want to know when the Wild, Knights or Jets game begins but want scoring updates for the Penguins and Stars, I can do that. I can also listen to the live radio broadcast of any team in the league and read news stories about any team. The scores tab allows me to see what games are going on when and on what TV channel, so I can plan ahead. I have used this app for two seasons now, and I have found it extremely useful..Version: 12.4.1

Almost ThereVideo quality is excellent but sometimes load times are slow and the app crashes on every device I have when loading highlights of games just concluded, particularly on the Smart TV versions. It would also be nice if those highlight recaps provided some context before each segment as to what is going on in the game at the time, as in whether a team is on the power play, what time of which period it starts from, etc. Also, non-scoring chance related events like player injuries, fights, etc. that give provide more of the feel of the game would be appreciated. I would also say that during live broadcasts, I’m okay watching the full complement of commercials rather than the “Commercial break in progress” screen, especially if that helps bring the price down!.Version: 12.4.2

More varietyI’d like to see the app reflect more of the options offered on the desktop website. For the news section I’d love for their to be a way to filter out based on senior writers, trade deadline tracker, scouting reports, etc. There is a lot of material offered through the website that app users really cannot see. The app also used to offer an option where you could filter videos by game recaps, goals, saves, etc. I’d love to be able to just select the type of video and just run through a bunch of them. The app runs super well with very few bugs but for users who use the app consistently there could be more for you to select and filter through. Other than that, it’s amazing and the layout, design and way it works is wonderful..Version: 10.3.4

More articles needed…You have at least close to 1000 regular roster players in the NHL yet hardly any good articles about these players. When the season ends, other then the first two weeks of free agency, there is almost nothing exciting to read about. For example we know my Lightning won the cup two years in a row. There should be WAY more coverage of them out celebrating with Stanley. You need reporters who will go chat up all these rising stars too besides the established ones. And some interviews with players who have been bought out and have to start over again. I want to know what’s going on with Zach Parise!.Version: 12.5.0

Mixed feelingsSome really good features in the redesign, but need some old accessibility back. While using the app recently I was on the scores tab looking up the previous nights games. What is really cool is that under the date it shows a small number of how many games are being played that day, the value of this may vary by individual. However while on the schedule page for my favorite team the layout is atrocious and was much better suited as a calendar style format, there is a lot of bouncing around between looking at previously games at the bottom of the list and the upcoming games at the top. The previous design allowed a calendar view which updated the W/L record and was easy to read for the entire month in one glance..Version: 14.5.0

Long time subscriberI have been a subscriber for 5 years and I love it. I dont experience the issues some others report. The games cast easily from my phone to my smart tv with crystal clear clarity. I travel often for work and even over cellular, games are clean and clear. Sorry for the others experiencing trouble, but I’ve never had any. The subscription works great on my apple TV as well. The game flow charts are fun to watch during games. Works great on my apple watch too. I like being able to watch any game I want (except for my home town Blue Jackets) and as a hockey junkie, I typically watch an eastern time zone game and then a western time zone game most nights..Version: 12.1.0

PLEASE READ PLEASEOk so I know you can change the app icon and I’ve done that and changed it to the sharks but it’s different than all the rest. I wish that you would change it to look like all the others where it would be the sharks logo and have a teal background rather that the white and the nhl on top. I don’t know why this bugs me but it does. Please fix this in the next update. Other than that I really enjoy this app. It gives me lots of stats and other thing other apps don’t. I like that when my team scores it plays their goal horn for a notification. It’s really cool. This is a really great app and nice to use for when I want to see the latest hockey news and stuff. GO SHARKS!!!!!!! -Sharks fan 🦈🦈🦈🦈.Version: 10.3.4

Game recaps buriedAs has typically been the case, versions other than the iPad version allow the user to access Game Recaps with one click after selecting game under “Scores.” Better yet, those versions allow the user to go to Videos and then watch a series of Game Recaps without taking any action after clicking the first desired Game Recap. For some bizarre reason, the iPad version has eliminated the Game Recaps under the Videos section and, instead, Game Recaps available only if the user selects a game and then scrolls all the way through the Gamecenter write up to see the Recap vid at the bottom (after seeing who has done what in the narrative and individual play vid captions). The Game Recaps have to be one of the most popular features. Why make them hard to get to?.Version: 11.1.0

Game flow update is really insightful feature!I have had the NHL app for almost three years, and this is perhaps the best update to the app so far. I also have the ESPN app to follow the NBA, and it shows real time graphs of the game flow. I was hoping that the NHL app developers would add a similar feature. And my wish came true! Although this feature is still relatively new, it offers a lot of potential. In the future, I hope the NHL app developers continue to add similar statistical features to the app for us hockey nerds out there. For instance, there should be a feature that shows where on the ice each team scored their goals. Kudos to NHL app for this awesome update! 👍.Version: 11.2.0

Getting WorseThe media on this app is getting way worse. And fast… Goal replays get cut down so minimal that the clip ends almost immediately after the puck crosses the goal line. They no longer include all of the different replay camera angles and slow motion shots that get broadcasted live, so you just get a tiny clip of the live goal and that’s it. Most of the post-game interviews do not get posted. They might post a coach and MAYBE one player. I’ve even notice them not even posting the coach’s interview on multiple occasions. So many team-relevant news-worthy stories just don’t get posted to the relevant team’s ‘news’ section anymore. If you were to follow the team’s instagram page, you would get 10-times more relevant team updates than the NHL app provides. Even big news doesn’t get posted to this app. Overall, looks like this app is speeding quickly in the wrong direction. I’d bet my money that it’s managed by people who are in no way hockey fans (or even sports fans of any kind). And it shows. Currently in ‘sad’ status, but the app could easily dip into ‘pathetic’ status soon. Can’t wait!.Version: 14.9.1

Naples FL Blues fanI am a lifelong St. Louisan and Blues fan. At the age of 55, I retired to Naples FL. Blues TV coverage is hard to get down here, so I have reverted to my childhood days when only a handful of games were on TV in the 70’s, I follow the Blues on radio. I used to love hearing Dan Kelly call the Blues games, I wish his son John was on the radio broadcast rather than TV but Kirbs calls a good game. So on to the review, this site is excellent at keeping me up on all Blues news and info. I also enjoy being able to see all the game recaps to visualize that which I didn’t get to see during the radio broadcast. I highly recommend this app to every Blues fan!.Version: 13.0.0

Why not?I realize that there is a certain bias against teams in non traditional hockey markets. However, there were several days during the first round when there were no stories at all about Carolina Hurricanes. There were also days when the only mention of Carolina was as the afterthought in the coverage of Boston. When there are 32 teams playing, I can understand that maybe not all teams could be covered in 30 stories. Yet the team that’s being snubbed has 2 Stanley Cup appearances with one Cup Title; they have been in the playoffs for the past several years and finished as one of the top teams this year. We don’t want anything more than the respect they have earned as one of the better teams..Version: 13.2.0

Video playback issuesIn general, the app is great. BUT. It's almost impossible to watch a game when the resolution drops to the point of looking like a distant video through a windshield on a rainy day for several minutes at a time, the audio cuts in and out entirely, and sometimes just freezes indefinitely until the app is force closed. It would be great to see a 15 second skip button option since the 30 second skip passes over the whistle to faceoff game time pause most of the time. Last but not least, if trying to watch a game from behind, be aware that sometimes the skip feature forwards to live, so spoilers aren't out of the question..Version: 11.2.0

Premium is a JokeGood app, premium is terrible. When I bought a year subscription it told me it would black out 3 teams. I figured, why not? I can watch all the hockey I want and catch my team games after 48 hours if I want to see the game play. Well, what they mean is these three teams will always be blacked out for you. If a game is showing on a channel in your area, well that gets blacked out too. Oh and those 3 teams, it’s actually 5 that are blacked out. The real kicker is, 3 of the 5 teams ARE NEVER SHOWN IN MY AREA! If you can black out other games because a channel in my area is showing the game, then you can show me the teams that are not shown in my area. Get the cable networks out of your pocket NHL. You are letting them ruin the sport for your fans..Version: 12.3.0

App or NHL?Overall the app is pretty great, there are a few things I don’t like, but I don’t know if it’s more about the App or about NHL.. I don’t understand why it is I pay for NHL premium but still get stuck with blackout restrictions? As if the NHL doesn’t have the right to air it’s own games? The other thing I wish was different was the commercial breaks; they finally updated it after 6 years of it being the same, but why don’t they just show highlights or news stories from around the league during them? Seems like a great opportunity for fans to get updates, and not debate on if they should just go to bed between periods because intermission is so boring..Version: 11.1.0

New update is disappointingThe new updates seem to be pushing Connor Bedard news and the latest news for my team doesn’t even update weekly. No more “Listen” feature for games. Can’t click on players names in the box score to check out their profile/history. And I really miss how when players scored the players who assisted in the goal were also clearly visible. The app is only showing goal scorers now. Keeping my fingers crossed that this update improves over the next couple of weeks. I think the only positive of the update so far is that pictures of players have already been updated as opposed to halfway through the season like in previous years..Version: 14.2.0
