The in-depth meteorological reasoning and details behind your local weather forecast, straight from the experts at NOAA/NWS.

Deep Weather grew out of a desire to provide easy access to some of the most high-quality and high-value, detailed weather sources that are usually overlooked by other weather apps. While many weather sources will tell you the general gist of what the weather is expected to do, Deep Weather provides the deep, detailed meteorological reasoning behind that forecast, along with the various factors that are likely to influence it, as well as potentially change where the forecast goes.

Deep Weather respects your privacy. Deep Weather doesn't track or store your location information, or any other data about you. (See privacy disclosure below). Deep Weather also doesn't display ads, but rather relies on optional Pro subscriptions from our loyal users to pay the bills.

Weather details not commonly found in other apps in a convenient, easy-to-read package. Provides a deeper understanding of your weather forecast.

Deep Weather automatically compiles an easy-to-read version of the most recent National Weather Service Area Forecast Discussion, advisories and warnings for your location.

The National Weather Service Area Forecast Discussions provide detailed information and background about the weather patterns and observations that are part of the most recent forecast model. They represent the "Story behind the weather story," a glimpse behind the scenes of your current forecast, and provide lots of weather forecast detail not found anywhere else.

Included sections:
Aviation Weather
Fire Weather
Climatology
Marine Weather
Beach Forecast
Watches, Warnings
Short Term Forecast
Long Term Forecast

To help provide a more visual picture, Deep Weather also provides easy access to a curated list of the most up-to-date weather graphics: National Forecast Chart, Surface Analysis, IR Satellite, Current Radar, Pacific and Atlantic Ocean surface analysis, 500mb graphical forecasts and more.

In addition, Deep Weather provides localized 7-day extended forecasts from the National Weather Service for any location in the United States and its territories.

Deep Weather provides great value in helping you anticipate and adjust to changes in the weather that you might not have been aware of if limited to other weather sources. By understanding the factors and assumptions that are part of the official forecast and how changes in those factors could affect the outcome, you are armed with a much deeper and more flexible understanding of the weather around you. This is highly valuable in aviation, sailing, long distance hiking and any other outdoor endeavor where changes in the weather can have great impact.

Use the map view to select any National Weather Service Forecast Office and receive the latest forecast discussion for that area.

The discussion is broken up into sections for you, and the text itself formatted in a much more easily read format than the raw original.

These discussions and weather graphics are amended and updated several times per day, so you can follow how the weather forecast is changing in real time, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the thought that goes into forming the forecast.

NWS Weather: Deep Weather App Comments & Reviews

NWS Weather: Deep Weather Positive Reviews

Best I’ve FoundI never watch or listen to the tv or radio “meteorologists”. All they seem to be capable of doing is talking about the computer models. They are like robots with no thinking skills of their own. It seemed that the days were gone of a meteorologist looking at pressure patterns, etc., and being able to come up with a 48 hour forecast from their own ability. Then I found this app! Yes, the models are mentioned, but the discussions goes beyond that and sometimes have a different prediction than the models. I love the the discussion of what front or dry line is sitting in a region and how that could shape the weather. I like a true meteorological discussion, not just, “There’s a chance of rain tomorrow “. Oh, and they put their name on their forecast and discussion. I suspect someone unable to critically think about meteorology would last too long here, unlike the tv folks that are more for entertainment than brains and accuracy. The app is free, but I paid for it, and will continue my yearly subscription as long as it remains “old school meteorology”. It’s actually the only app I’ve ever thought worthy of paying for! I’ll continue my yearly subscriptions as long as it keeps doing the same. I think the yearly and lifetime subscription fees are very reasonable for the product. I use this app for daily/weekly planning, but also for the aviation features. (It was the aviation feature that led me to discover the app.).Version: 4.6.4

Love the app for AFDs, now with favorites option.Update! Wow, that was fast! So easy now to toggle between my favorite NWS stations with the heart icon on the bottom toolbar. Thanks for the quick turnaround on that request. // My previous review: One of my go to first in the morning to read local NWS Area forecast discussion's. I have only three requests for hopefully future updates... The option to store favorite offices, push notifications when a new discussion is available for one of your favorites and maybe and option for the previous discussion from that office. Love the app. Clean and quick to load data on my iPhone and iPad..Version: 3.3

Technical Weather Forecast without the jargonI am a weather geek with a physics degree. I understand the weaknesses and failure of weather apps that boil weather forecasts into a single digit or a range of probabilities. The Deep Weather app is unique. It boils all the technical information into a simple, easy to understand narrative that is spot on. In the past as we’ve travelled during the winter in the American West I’ve used the NWS twitter posts to understand the trends in upcoming weather. From now on I will check Deep Weather first before tackling the technical forecasts..Version: 4.8

Good, but weird text parsingDeep Weather is improving but is still lacking in polish. For example, in the list of forecast discussion sections, each list item is very tall. The preview text in them is of limited benefit, so I’d rather see just the headings and keep the list to a single page. (I love the list icons, though!) The thing that bugs me the most, though, is how the text itself is parsed: every sentence shows up as a new paragraph. This makes it so much harder to follow and completely fragments the flow of what the forecaster was saying. Please fix it so it shows the paragraphs as written! Overall, a good app with plenty of opportunities to become even better!.Version: 3.3

Ideal for volatile weather locationsLiving in Oklahoma, we can have all four seasons in one week. Living in a mobile home makes OK tornado season even scarier. I especially like how there is a permanent section for watches/warnings. I can quickly verify if there is one or NONE, which helps with my peace of mind. I also appreciate the in depth Short Term descriptions because it explains what might happen and why. This is exactly what I was looking for in a weather app. I just wish there was a widget (for quicker watch/warn double checking)..Version: 4.8

It can be handyI live in a weird part of country for weather. Getting this software to give me a real info for my area is really hard. But I can see that this software is well thought out, and I like it. If I lived anywhere else other then the Cascade Shadow on the Colombia River this would work really well. Update: Aug 2018 I use this app every day. Again because of where I live getting a good forecast for here is almost impossible. I use this app to get a foundation for the region. I have also talked with the developer of the software about another feature and he was very easy to talk with. He also added the wanted feature..Version: 3.6.1

Unparreled narrative and weather commentaryI have been looking for some time to get this sort of commentary for weather weather local or somewhere else. This compendium of analysis is almost complete, if they could attach links or their own source for jet stream forecast animated maps, radar, and assortments of maps winds, temps, and frontal position, then this would be king and I would only need one source, alas I do still have to see these others to complete my thirst; however, for narrative this is unparalleled. Cannot speak highly enough or recommend enough..Version: 3.7

Awesome appGives instant access to the forecast discussion from every office across the country. Perfect for those who travel to different cities as well as just weather nerds at home (I use it for both). Not complicated and it doesn’t need to be. Forecast discussions are, IMO, vastly more important than the forecast itself, as you get a window into why it is what it is and how it could, and many times does, change. Again, it’s beauty is in its simplicity. I use it multiple times daily..Version: 3.6.3

Excellent informationAs a long distance backpacker I need raw information on weather as I'm out on the trail a month I find Deep Weather to fill this need in keeping me informed on what is ahead weather wise for the short term and long term forecasts. I've learned to trust it and rely on it for its information, which in turn helps me formulate, and or adjust the hike plan as needed. With learning weather patterns and reading the clouds as they appear in the sky, I'm very seldom caught by surprise with weather events..Version: 3.7

Why not five stars?I do love this app, but every other time I try to read the detail, nothing happens, no details. And, the day I signed to the Pro version, still, nothing! This is frustrating! We are in the midst of a Winter storm in Maine as I write this amid changing conditions with a paid up pro version, and it’s frozen! Five stars when or if it consistently shows the details I’m paying for!.Version: 4.1

Absolutely Useless AppI signed up for the free version because I’m kind of a geek about this things, especially since the fires. I live literally near the only weather station inland LA Basin, and it’s assigning me to the only station in the region, far away and literally by the oceme to contact tech support or ian. I then went to premium and signed up for monthly subscription, thinking this would remedy the problem, but no! There’s no way for me to get the station close to me. The one near the ocean far away is useless to me! And there is no apparent way to get tech support, nor to unsubscribe!!!.Version: 4.0

Good but annoyingI like the idea of this app. The use of text instead of graphics is refreshing, and the Extended Forecast screen tells me what I need for the area I search for. Unfortunately it constantly displays messages about location being turned off, often two at a time, layered on top of each other, and clicking the X on one of them sometimes fails to dismiss it. If all those location messages could be turned off this would be a nice app..Version: 4.8

Information not found oftenIt amazes me that with the abundance of weather apps out there, very few have this information, the weather service discussion, available full time. Some apps have it if an alert is issued. That is a small step but insufficient. Use this app, read the discussions, and start understanding the weather..Version: 3.3

Easy to useSimple interface but easy to find locations to gather weather information as a weather junkie this app makes it easy for me to fly around the country and gain a sense of current weather analysis to build my own local forecast if you enjoy understanding the whys of why the weather works as it does this app is a must!.Version: 3.3.1

Excellent appThe forecast discussion is the most meaningful and interesting NWS product for me - thanks for this efficient route to it. Short of NOAA/NWS making their own app for direct access (apparently not allowed), this is the best access to one of the most valuable parts of the NWS forecast package. I’ll be reading the forecast discussion on my deathbed..Version: 4.6.5

The perfect tool for reading the NWS Forecast DiscussionThis app does one thing perfectly: gets you the NWS Forecast Discussion and presents it to you in an easy to read format. If you’re a frequent Forecast Discussion reader, you understand why that’s awesome. If not, try this out and get a detailed understanding of your weather, straight from the National Weather Service!.Version: 3.6.3

Great informationIf you’re like me and want deeper information about our weather Deep Weather is for you. As a boater, the local forecast isn’t enough for me. I need to know more about what is happening so I can form better judgment about the safety of my boat and her crew. Deep weather is the best weather discussion I have found..Version: 3.7

Love the appFantastic and minimalist text weather app that does everything it needs to and nothing it doesn't. Thanks to the developer for fixing voiceover accessibility in the latest update. Text descriptions on the buttons are greatly appreciated by those of us who use the voiceover screen reader...Version: 3.6.4

Fantastic Weather App - Must HaveAs a meteorologist I find Deep Weather is one of my most used weather apps. The ability to get a nicely formatted AFD is a very nice convenience and time saver. Not that I can’t read and locate the raw AFD but this is a huge time saver with the favorites feature. Any chance you’ll do one for the HWO’s possibly?.Version: 3.6.2

One last thing...I use this app all the time. It helps me understand the weather, so I can assess the certainty of forecasts from the National Weather Service and other sources. The only flaw that prevents me from giving it that last star is that I cannot sort the order of the favorite stations list..Version: 3.6.3

Love it when they are wrong!Yes they are some times wrong but that’s fun too. It takes some time to catch on to the acronym and the abbreviations but helps you understand weather patterns and how the professionals do their work. Don't miss the climate discussion. ( the real climate info)!.Version: 4.7.6

InformativeThis is the best weather app I’ve used. The others are fancier with more eye appeal but this app not only tells you what to expect but why. So as a result, I not only am informed of what to expect but why. It’s still weather forecasting however..Version: 4.7.6

No-Frills WeatherI really like this app, but I think an even better name for it would be “No Frills Weather”, because I think it’s a niche product that would be most appealing to the kind of people who prefer more bare-bones, no-frills things..Version: 4.8

Excellent information sourceThe NWS Forecast Discussion is a great way to understand what is likely to happen and get a sense of the unknowns that may impact current forecasts. Really good for looking out a week or a bit more. Needs better controls to allow you to select your initial view like the whole discussion on the first screen..Version: 3.6.4

Love easy access to NOAA forecast discussionI used to dig around to get the forecast discussion. Now it comes right up! You can select which noaa office you want from a map. If you subscribe, you can also save favorite stations..Version: 3.9

The Best Weather App. Period.Scroll down to the bottom and opt to read all the information on one page. You get a detailed, accurate analysis of what is, and what is to come. Spot on. No hyperbole..Version: 4.8

OpinionThis platform describes the weather systems verbally, no pictures, therefore challenging the viewer’s mind in a way that I like. I have many weather apps, this one is unique, and I have expanded my weather lingo. Not 5 stars, because I live on the edge between Albany and Hartford weather spheres, so I have to extrapolate a tad-but know what’s coming upstream. Thanks.Version: 4.0

No snow levels for local mountainsGood overall coverage of weather, but, like almost every other weather app, it misses the mark for mountain forecasts. The most useful forecast for winter weather in the mountains is estimated snow level. Knowing the probability of snow versus rain is critical for safe driving and even survival. Missing this key prediction is a fail..Version: 4.6.6

Great simple access to forecast discussionsMy only wish is that on the iPad you could have the selections and discussion all in one screen without the overlapping. And perhaps allow the default view to be set (eg single page).Version: 3.5

Latest update bugThe forecast is now missing sections in some cases. Example: Phoenix forecast has synopsis but not actual discussion. Same with single page version. Problem started within the past week..Version: 4.1

Different type of weather appThe forecasts are text rather than graphics. Now that I’m used to it I like it. There are maps but no radar. And NO ads..Version: 4.8

Real thingThe app gives us the in depth story of what is causing our weather. Some is technical but you can find out the background on that wind or drought or snowstorm..Version: 4.7.6

Great App!Reliable information. Gives empirical insights in the forecasts that general TV, media, or other apps don’t give you. Like being able to save favorite forecasting areas!.Version: 4.6.5

The real deal in my estimationThese folks give the real forecast with explanation, with out the hype. Always spot on. And if the weather is being iffy they tell you and explain why..Version: 4.3.4

Really usefulGives you the details of the weather forecast. we often use Deep Weather to help with travel decisions..Version: 4.3.1

Great Upgrade!Thank you for this fantastic upgrade! Being able to access favorite weather data is important for keeping up to date!.Version: 3.3

Would Recommend!I love this app and how it has detailed localized forecasts. The discussions and synopsis’s are really explanatory. Also has nationwide charts for national weather. Would Recommend!.Version: 4.7.6

Love this app!I consult it everyday to gain insight in coming weather trends. I find this app to be more accurate than any I’ve tried for planning my upcoming outdoor activities..Version: 4.6.6

Best weather app out thereLove that you can see the reasoning behind a forecast, in as much or as little detail as you like..Version: 4.8

RE: Stopped WorkingLatest update crashes almost immediately..Version: 4.6.5

FantasticFinally an app that gives you full info on the weather and not only those minimal icons with sun clouds and droplets. A real pleasure to use and support. Thanks for making it..Version: 3.8

Great Help!I’m on the road now but with a little flying experience in the past to understand some of the terminology, I find this app to be very informative and very up to date..Version: 3.6.3

InformativeI love this app! Informative text based weather app without the needless animated graphics that bloat other apps. If you can read, this weather app is for you!.Version: 3.6.3

MehNot that great. I just now looked at it and after pulling down the screen the latest info was ten hours old! Not of much use. I’ll give it another chance..Version: 4.8

Thorough and reliableFrequently updated throughout the day. For the weather fans, without doubt. Even some lighthearted injections scattered amidst the dry material. Very industrial appearance..Version: 4.3.4

WeatherTop notch information, accurate. A little hard to understand, but great app.Version: 4.3.1

Great weather app, plenty of weather data, one requestLove the app, the deep dive into the weather is great. The only complaint I have is, when sharing the weather report via the share sheet, I only get a screenshot of the visible portion of the report..Version: 4.3.4
