Choosing when and where to observe is hard. It's a pain to take out your telescope and then having to put it away when clouds quickly roll in.

Well, now you don't have to. With iCSC on your iPhone, you can easily search around for the best location, using Clear Sky Charts published by Attilla Danko.

The Clear Sky Chart, invented and maintained by Attilla Danko, shows at a glance when, in the next 48 hours, one might expect clear and dark skies for a specific observing site.

There are over 4600 charts available for North America, with data provided by Allan Rahill of the Canadian Meteorological Center. These charts provide Cloud Cover, Transparency, Seeing, Darkness, Wind, Humidity, and Temperature. Users can also enable a legend to help read the charts.

iCSC allows users to find charts by title, location, or with a map. Users can then save the charts that they use often.

While Clear Sky Charts are targeted at astronomers, anyone who wishes to look into the heavens, or needs a highly accurate sky forecast can benefit from iCSC: Clear Sky Chart Viewer.

ICSC: Clear Sky Chart Viewer App Comments & Reviews

ICSC: Clear Sky Chart Viewer Positive Reviews

Very Accurate!I use this for astronomy and astrophotography to help plan my time under the stars. It’s very accurate even though the closest data collection site is 20 miles away. I use this app constantly, very simple to use, and has all the information you need to consider for your Astro Endeavors..Version: 1.2.5

Excellent location conditions resourceThis app gives you timely information about sky conditions for night sky observations across the United States. That said, not all observatory names tell you about their location. This is never a problem if you only plan to frequent ones that are near you and few in number, however, if you’d like to travel and plan out night sky observations along your trips the location (geographic) information is not contained in the name of each observatory. It’s kind of like someone only telling you the name of the street or city they live in. If their are multiple locations that have that street or city name, the usefulness of that information is quickly diminished. Adding GPS coordinates might help, but so would a road, city and state. If not that, then allow for notes in the favorites list on each entry so you would not need to enter the site report and then look to find it on the map. A very useful add to the app would be to make use of location information provided by cell and ip to see a list of reporting observatory’s nearby..Version: 1.2.5

Can update the forecast more frequent, at least once in the afrernoonWondering if its possible to access the backend data source of a specific location, so I can query updated info on demand. Cloud in my area changes frequently, there are a few times the app wasn't able to catch it up until last minute and that makes the plan have to be cancelled..Version: 1.2.5

Best app for dark sky forecastThanks to great data from the Canadian Met Office and great software from Atilla Danko, the astronomy sky forecast is used by astronomers all over North America. This convenient app is great since I can save my favorite observing locations and check out the sky forecast before I head out to observe. Well done!.Version: 1.2.5

Nice appNice to have access to the charts on phone anytime and anywhere. Works well. Also nice to be able to be able to save the sites you use as favorites. Very nice predictive software so you can plan your viewings and know what to expect for upcoming observing conditions.Version: 1.2.5

Great resource to maximize and optimize your star-gazingI’ve got a handful of local spots saved as favorites so I can quickly check sky conditions, so I know when star gazing will be awesome vs so-so vs “stay inside”. Really great resource for anyone who likes to view the stars, with or without a telescope..Version: 1.2.5

A great, near-term weather appIt’s nice to have access to accurate, near-term weather data when you’re trying to spot distant galaxies or take night photos. This app makes that possible..Version: 1.2.5

Latest update crashes on Iphone XCrashes as soon as I select an observatory/location ever since the update. Corrected - now it is fixed. Thanks for fixing so quickly!.Version: 1.2.5

Crashed on opening a favorite, even after your message says bug is fixed. Thanks for getting this fixed. It’s back to working great..Version: 1.2.5

Accurate and necessaryThis is a wonderful tool, I use it anytime I am planning to look up at the sky..Version: 1.2.2

Search functionGreat app, but there’s no search function? It would be so easy to implement a simple search feature at the top of the full list of observing sites. Please implement this in the next update!.Version: 1.2.5

Good. Needs more work.I’m generally happy with this app, but would like the ability to enter GPS coords for favorites. “Nearest neighbor” doesn’t work when that closest info point is over 100 miles away..Version: 1.2.5

Fast ChartQuickly brings up your local Clear Sky Chart for astronomical observing or photography. Does not bring up maps like the original website though..Version: 1.2.5

Good but...Wish they explained what each category meant in terms of overall ability to see the stars..Version: 1.2.5

Handy toolLots of “seeing” information and forecasts at my fingertips. Helps me plan for an evening under the stars with my telescopes..Version: 1.2.5

Gr8 appI have been using this app for years. It seems to be a very accurate forecasting tool..Version: 1.2.5

AwesomeThis is great weather guide fo clear skies. It is my go to app for star gazing. Very accurate. Highly recommended!.Version: 1.2.5

Great AppI use this app all the time. Very accurate for my location (US mid-Atlantic coast)..Version: 1.2.5

Version 1.2.5 Works GreatBug with favorites is fixed. Thanks for the great support..Version: 1.2.5

ABSOLUTE NECESSITY FOR ASTRONOMYThis is my first, and often only, go-to for astronomical seeing details. It’s fundamentally necessary..Version: 1.2.5

Clear Sky ChartSimple and useful..Version: 1.2.5

Six starsI would rate it 6 stars if I could. Very useful app..Version: 1.2.5

Amazing app for astrophotographyPerfect lightweight app to check sky conditions for astrophotography!.Version: 1.2.5

Essential Short Term Planning ToolA no brainer. Get this!.Version: 1.2.5

Simply the best!Concise amalgamation of data!.Version: 1.2.5

IndispensabileBest and most reliable for amateur astronomers Tim Brown.Version: 1.2.5

Fantastic appIndispensable for astronomers!.Version: 1.2.5

Great data. Layout could be betterThe Clear Sky Chart is the most reliable data for stargazing. Having an app for it is great. I love the map location feature which displays the closest weather stations to your location. One complaint is that the chart seems to float on my iPhone 6 screen. It can be moved up and down and sideways. It simply just does not fit right. I think this can be improved upon. I would like the chart to fit the screen. Right now, it is too big for the screen and to see all the data, you need to move the chart around. Fix that, and you get 5 stars!.Version: 1.1

More than just astronomy..In addition to using this app for astronomy, I use it in my business as a professional location photographer. It is so important to me that I still have the old version and specifically held off on OS and even phone updates in fear of losing it. I have saved my clients thousands of dollars in wasted time on hiring expensive models, charter aircraft for aerials and countless other expenses related to advertising shoots because more than any other weather app out there, this app is 100% accurate in it's forecast of the sky. Now that it has been re-done, I can finally update my phone!.Version: 1.1

It’s back! My favThis is the best app for seeing an astronomy forecast at a glance. The layout takes just a little getting used to, but I’ve used this for so long it’s very familiar. The web version has definitions. I’d also like to see the web feature of clicking on a metric and seeing the source maps. The only downside is this forecast comes from the Canadian weather bureau, so that maps are skewed to their side. Their privilege. I’m thankful they include us. May be app could have a link to the web version?.Version: 1.1

It’s good to see you backWhen we lost the original iCSC, many of us were chagrined to switch to the myCSC app. It was okay but limited. Now we have a better version of the great original. I never thought this would happen, so kudos to all of you who helped to create this helpful app for those of us who love clear skies. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Terry.Version: 1.1

This new version is betterThe minor annoyances in the previous version have been corrected and made this app more user friendly. After years of using the CSC, I've become accustomed to the method of presentation and can get a good idea of the predicted observing conditions at a clance. No weather forecast is perfect but the CSC is better than all the others..Version: 1.1

A must-have toolIn conjunction with local weather reports, this tool is invaluable not only for viewing but most certainly also for AP. It has saved me on multiple occasions from making a wasted trip when local weather suggests decent skies but this app says "not so much - expect soup", and soup is what happened..Version: 1.1

Super HandyI used to have to go to the internet and search every time. Now I just open the app and click on favorites and there is the forecast. The only problem I see is that I find myself looking up the conditions too often, hoping for clear skies. 😃.Version: 1.2.1

Just as good as the website but easierI have used the ClearSky Clock for many years. It is near 100% accurate in predicting sky conditions within 24 hours. So what could be better, a simple no frills app that allows you to view the weather predictor graphic..Version: 1.2.1

A great classic astronomy toolI have been using the clear sky clock for almost a decade. I loved it then and I love it now. This has been a free app and the only way that developers keep it going through your donations. Please support the developers in any way that you can. (No, I'm not one of them)..Version: 1.2.1

AmazingFound this after checking a weather app and thinking to myself, "I wish there was an app which also showed clouds, transparency, seeing, etc.". This is it! Dead on accurate as well, allows me to plan my astronomy nights. Highly recommend!!.Version: 1.1

Easy to retrieve multiple astro forecastsI have long used clear sky charts on my computer to gauge the weather for imaging. This app is quicker, easier, and can easily show multiple nearby clear sky forecasts, plus it works everywhere I go. And the price is right too..Version: 1.1

Great, simple and easy. That pretty much says it all. This app is well designed and it's forecast is very reliable. The app provides the same info as the website but it's easier to use on an iOS device..Version: 1.2.1

NiceAbout like using the website. The viewing interface isn't really much nicer. It's just slightly more convenient, you see just the weather data and not everything else..Version: 1.1

Almost perfectWorks well and pretty easy to grasp for kids once they understand the time and color scheme. Trying to "simplify and pretty it up" would just ruin the whole thing. Keep it the way it is..Version: 1.1

Extremely accurate!Been using this app for astronomy for a couple weeks now. It is very accurate. I highly recommend this as a tool for backyard astronomers planning to plan an evening..Version: 1.2.1

Fantastic, just needs a few minor changes. The layout could use a bit of work and I wish they would add the definitions of "transparency" and "seeing". Those minor details aside, this app is an absolute must for any amateur astronomer..Version: 1.1

It works and it is easy to useEasy to understand and use - nicely functional app!.Version: 1.2.5

Greater accuracy any weather app.Amazing accuracy and simple to use. Astronomers best friend..Version: 1.2.5

Please add widgets and iPad supportI love the accuracy of the forecast but I really wish there was iPad support and support for Widgets in iOS..Version: 1.2.5

Basic but UsefulI’ve experienced several odd crashes and strange bugs but for what I need it for, it works well enough and always has reliable information. I use this app to check night sky conditions for stargazing, meteor shower conditions and chasing the aurora borealis. It has saved me from driving an hour out of town for the lights, based on knowing the humidity and darkness (moonlight and such) aren’t ideal, or if / when a weather system is blowing in. I’ve been using this app very frequently (several times a week) for a few years, now. I’d hate to be without it!.Version: 1.2.5

Great little appI use it all the time. Could use some improvement on the scaling side.Version: 1.2.1

Good app, would love widgetI would really really like a widget for a quick view of a favorite chart..Version: 1.2.5

GreatI have used this program for years but always from my laptop now that it is virtually in my pocket I will use it even more. Thanks for making a great product easier to utilize..Version: 1.2.1

Pure awsomenessLove it all the way and also have one on my website www.univerciel.ca.Version: 1.2.1

Very goodThis is the perfect app for astronomy a must have.Version: 1.2.1

Hidden GemApp is a hidden gem. Works flawlessly. Great use of map integration and 3D Touch. Very handy..Version: 1.2.1

Excellent!!!I'm using this app on a regular basis in order to prepare all my astronomy sessions and it's very accurate and easy to use! Thanks to the devs!!!.Version: 1.2.1

Essential astronomy tool! The app brings a range of meteorological info into an easy to interpret format! Like it a lot!.Version: 1.1

Accurate and easy to useI always use this app before taking the scope outside..Version: 1.1

Best Weather App for Astronomers! If you need to know the weather for a very specific location and not just a general forecast but transparency and seeing, this is the app. I gave it only 4 stars because it is iPhone size and I would love more detail for my ipad as well..Version: 1.1

Useful, but often not useableThis app encapsulates information derived from Attila Danko's website, and is certainly handier than navigating the website itself to find a sky forecast for your location. Unfortunately the app freezes if allowed to sleep for a while - go off and do something else, then return to refresh your information, and your only recourse is to quit the app and relaunch it. That's not hard to do, but it's very annoying if you wanted to do a quick check before heading out the door..Version: 1.1

Very goodReally useful for night sky photography. Detailed data. It just needs some (look and feel) enhancements..Version: 1.1

5 starV good.Version: 1.1
