Human Japanese HD | Learn Japanese with your personal sensei-in-a-box™ Positive Reviews

Great for grammar and background explanationsI would strongly recommend this app. It’s a textbook, but with lots of pictures, sound, some video, and links to deeper explanations of the words and sentences. It has animations of hiragana and katakana as well as tips on how to keep them straight. It’s great for initially learning about a topic. The author writes with humor and style. He even takes breaks to provide lessons on Japanese culture to break things up. It feels like a very personal experience. The app is titled ‘Human Japanese’ and that fits very well. The app can’t do everything on its own. I recommend the iphone/ipad app “Learn Japanese!” for help memorizing hiragana and katana. The “Learn Japanese to Survive” game series for PC (on Steam) is another great tool for learning the kana, especially if you like JRPG games. I also strongly recommend a note card program for vocabulary memorization. I use Anki, which is free on PC but available as a paid app on mobile. Finally, I would recommend Duolingo as a secondary source and review tool (but not as a primary source as Human Japanese is MUCH better at initially presenting material. Duolingo keeps me motivated and has an effective way of presenting information that helps you remember, but Duolingo’s Japanese course is very weak on explaining the material it initially presents. When you pair this Human Japanese app together with some other sources for memorization and review, its a super effective combination..Version: 3.2.1

一番 (The Best)This app is packed with interesting knowledge and interactive features that makes learning Japanese fun! I started with this, and recently picked up Rosetta Stone. I think both apps are great at what they do, but together become an awesome set of language tools. Since I started with Human Japanese first, I already had a lot of the basics down, and was able to quickly plow through the first several sections of Rosetta Stone. However, I don't feel like one could replace the other, but rather that they both bring something unique to the table. Since Rosetta Stone is focused more on association, and pronunciation, I've been using it for the 'What' and 'How', and then using this app for the 'When', 'Where', and most importantly 'Why' side of things. For example, the fact that は can be pronounced 'ha' or 'wa' in specific cases is easy to understand after going through the early chapters of Human Japanese, though I imagine it could be confusing the way Rosetta Stone presents it, if you don't know anything about particles in the Japanese language. On the flip side, Rosetta Stone has tools to grade your pronunciation, and can teach new things without using any English at all. Personally, I'm glad that neither of these try to do both, and I think it would be silly to expect them to. I personally enjoy using Human Japanese for new concepts, history, and in depth understanding of how the language works. Then I use Rosetta Stone to solidify what I learned..Version: 3.2.1

Worth the price!I tried the trial version of Rosetta Stone and felt sticker shock when I saw how much doing the rest of the lessons would cost (at least, compared to other apps on the App Store), so I browsed around and found this. It's definitely worth it! The format is like an interactive textbook, and the author has a nice friendly style with well-designed lessons. I love being able to press anything to hear how to say it. I also like the quizzes and mini-games, as they are useful for practicing when I'm short on time. And finally, I like how the syllabaries are presented. Learning to read them was my biggest obstacle in Japanese, as many books and websites seem to just assume you know them. This app forces you to practice with games and practice problems, and learning them just seems natural..Version: 3.2.1

Still good for an older app; could be great with refresh and more kanjiI’ve tried so many Japanese learning apps in the past year. Many now have AI. This one doesn’t and is a bit dated, but it explains the complexities of Japanese so well, it’s still worth $10-$15, cheaper than a text book. It seems like most of the app maker’s resources are going into the Satori Reader app, which is also great. This app is still a good starting point for Japanese, but it would great with a refresh and more kanji. Katakana could also be covered much earlier instead of spoon feeding it. Despite that, I’ve finally found an app I like and intend to stick with. Another plus to me is that it has a completion point; not an infinite amount of never ending lessons. I will need to supplement this with kanji learning on my own, but Wanikani and others make that easy to do..Version: 3.2.1

Not only phonetic learning, but reading as wellI wanted an app that taught not only conversational Japanese, the kind of phonetic mastery a tourist to Japan would need to order the right sushi and not end up with inappropriately prepared puffer fish, find where the bathroom is, etc., but how to read Japanese as well, so when you’re standing in that Tokyo bullet train station, you can competently find your way to the anime store by reading the signs. This is that app. It starts with hiragana, then katakana then the hardest: kanji. Over 10,000 kanji symbols, derived from Chinese (traditional, not simplified). If you want to really master Japanese you’ve come to the right place. It’ll will no longer be Greek to you..Version: 3.2.1

Have been using for 3 yearsI have been using HJ for 3 years now, has definitely been my preferred choice of learning even over my school classes. No complaints on how this is taught. Everything is told to you, nothing will be hidden. Things are explained as to why they are how they are. That would be cool if there was more customization like a theme available, but it's nothing that affects the learning. However, if you are someone who isn't good with only being able to read and hear by learning and take notes then this probably isn't for you. If you enjoy learning by getting to read and write notes then this is perfect..Version: 3.2.1

Human Japanese series is the best language learning programI am fluent in Spanish and speak native English. When I started to learn Japanese I tried many different programs. I don’t have access to any tutor led japanese learning classes or any teacher led programs, so finding something where you can truly come to understand the language is difficult. The Human Japanese series as a whole is incredibly thorough and a great way to get deep into Japanese. Its written and organized very well. Its not a cookie cutter program and I’ve tried many others. Name it and I’ve tried it. This is a the single most successful program I’ve seen in learning any language for self-learners..Version: 3.2.1

Easily Breaks Down the ConceptsI like the pace this app goes, but mostly I like the conversational-style of the lessons. I have learned much of the same vocabulary and grammar in other textbooks at roughly the same pace, but HJ breaks it down clearly like no other method does, and it really makes clear all of those little questions a beginner has. Many other methods assume that you really don’t need to know the “why” of certain things, but it helps with remembering things so much better when you have the explanation. The quizzes are perfect for helping you remember both concepts and vocabulary. Very well-designed, well-worth the cost. Thanks, Human Japanese!.Version: 3.2.1

The BestI think this is the best for making the joy of Japanese clear. It has all the things that I wondered about clearly explained. How to make the characters look good... The quizzes are a bit easy, except the matching games and numbers quizzes, which are more open-ended than the typical multiple choice quizzes. The Japanese people I meet seem pleasantly surprised that I can pronounce the words, and this is thanks to the fact that a native speaker will pronounce all the words for you as they are presented (just click on it), or perhaps it's mainly because the Japanese are just a pleasant and appreciative group to begin with. Either way, this is a nice app..Version: 3.2.1

Best Japanese Language AppThe content is written in a very informative and friendly way that keeps you interested. It teaches you not only Japanese characters, words, and sentence structure, but also the reason why you would say thing a certain way depending on the situation, to whom you are speaking with, point of view, etc. There are lots of cultural lessons where you will learn specific words for foods, festivals, places of interest, etc. I really liked the ability to touch a sentence and hear an actual person say the sentence. This app is really a steal for what you get..Version: 3.2.1

Starting PointI truly enjoy this app! I'm a beginner in Japanese Language and searched quite a bit for useful teaching tools in my pursuit of Japanese language, but to no avail until now! I'm currently on chapter 20: Possessive and pushing forward. This app has many helpful features, especially the quizzes and reviews available to to test your knowledge as well as a side bar to take notes on as you read. I definitely appreciate them sounding out and providing a more personable style f writing, complements to the author(s)! I look forward to my next lesson!.Version: 3.2.1

Excellent Japanese Learning AppHuman Japanese is worth the price. It is written in such an engaging way with humor sprinkled throughout. I have been using this app for four months and still feel very motivated to study Japanese every day. I have learned so much in a short time and have enjoyed every lesson. I purchased the beginner/intermediate combo to continue learning Japanese. To Brak Software, どうもありがとうございます * I also purchased Mirai's Kana Chart (includes Hiragana & Katakana) and their Kanji Chart. Those were helpful to practice writing the syllabaries. The included flashcards are great to quiz yourself with..Version: 3.2.1

The best language learning appI wish other apps were as thorough as Human Japanese. I tried both Rosetta Stone and Duolingo. Useless. With HJ you get what you need in the context you need it. This course teaches history and culture and explains the 'whys' when teaching. In this regard, RS and DL are completely lacking. None of the phrases are useless as in Duolingo. Not to completely trash DL, because it is a fun app..but it is more like a game. While a. It pricey for both beginning and intermediate, it is still much less than a college course or most textbooks. Get it..Version: 3.2.1

Many out there few deliverI have been on off studying Japanese for 14 years now and this is by far one of the easiest to understand and best organized! It is also hard to find apps that will teach you grammar anymore, it’s all pre-scripted phrases to get by. This app actually breaks down the language so you can know it inside and out to be able to actually speak like an educated person! Love it and highly recommend the purchase!.Version: 3.2.1

Probably the best foreign language app ever inventedI can’t speak highly enough about the care, planning, and ease of use and ease of self-learning this app provides. I am a native English speaker and have been using the app for 3 week and I am completely fluent in reading and writing both Hiragana and Katakana! The cultural and historical information and the design of the app is the highest quality I have ever seen in a foreign language app. The recordings are excellent quality and easy to understand..Version: 3.2.1

The bestIt's funny. I tried Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur. I spent money and more importantly, time and came out feeling like I was completely ripped off. I saw this app and noticed it was rated 5 stars and decided to give it a whirl. Within the first week I had the entire syllabary down. I could read Japanese. I couldn't understand the words but I was reading. After that I continued the lessons and I feel I've gotten further in my a month with Human Japanese than either Rosetta Stone or Pimsleur. Make the investment and enjoy!.Version: 3.2.1

So personableIt feels like you’re being talked to by a one on one tutor. My only gripe is that the app is not optimized for newer iPads (seeing as though it was last updated 6 years ago), but that being said, the content is amazing. Definitely recommend investing in this (especially since it’s a one time purchase, screw all the other subscription model apps). Also s/o to AbroadinJapan for the rec 😉.Version: 3.2.1

Well consideredAs advertised. An excellent introduction to the language that builds understanding via well-paced blend of kana (characters), vocabulary, mechanics, and culture. Set phrases were only introduced as appropriate and usually included cultural explanations, as when learning a language it's equally important to understand how and why to say a thing as what not to say. My only suggestion would be to add kana flash cards for practicing instant kana recognition (I used a free flash card app for this).Version: 3.2.1

The best app for learning JapaneseI've tried many apps and I always find myself a little annoyed with the pace or the style of the lessons. Sometimes they're big on grammar or they focus too much on travel phrases. HJ strikes a perfect balance and is good for any proficiency -- you can easily test out of things and even fill in any gaps in the quizzes! I really enjoyed the trial and decided to buy the full versions of the beginner and intermediate apps. No regrets yet!.Version: 3.2.1

Five Stars for the PriceThe price is great and the app is powerful with a lot of info inside! If you're starting out, this isn't a bad place to start, though I'd recommend getting started on kanji right away as well (I love the wanikani site for that). My only complaints about the app are that it takes as long as it does to teach you katakana and that multiple choice quizzes make it easy to think you're further along than perhaps you really are. I've been studying Japanese for about five months now and in addition to this I like the following tools: Wanikani (mentioned above) iKnow app and subscription Genki textbook, workbook and apps When I was learning hiragana and katakana I liked Tako's Japanese and also the two Kodansha workbooks with flashcards..Version: 3.2.1

Not just Words and PhrasesThe annoying thing about most language programs is they either shove grammar at you, or give you pictures to try and figure out. Not so with this program. The learning method is organic and thorough. The language is not only taught, but explained, so you feel like you're learning something precious, rather than trying to memorize words. Definitely recommend..Version: 3.2.1

Easiest and most intuitive way to learn Japanese!I have purchased both Human Japanese Beginner and Human Japanese Intermediate several times for different systems (iPad, PC, Mac) and I love it! I have completed HJ Beginner several times to deepen my understanding, but was speaking, reading, and writing it throughout the first time. I am now on HJ Intermediate and everything just got better. Same great way to learn, but even more efficient! Thanks for creating such a helpful app!.Version: 3.2.1

Amazing AppThis app is a amazing discovery as it teaches you the Japanese language in your own pace and with the ability to bookmark pages and make any notes it feels like it’s your own experience. One major thing that I don’t like however is that we aren’t learning the appropriate Kanji for the required words even when we learn the Hiragana and Katakana symbols and it sometimes catch me off guard as I’m used to seeing some of the words as Kanji and not in Hiragana/Katakana.Version: 3.2.1

Learning Japanese? This app is perfectI was trying to find apps to learn Katakana and Kanji, but also learn not just words but how the sentence structure worked. I couldn’t find any website nor any apps, UNTIL NOW. This app is amazing. I’m learning so much about sentences, how everything is pronounced, and even cool facts about Japan and the culture! The $15 is a lot, but even to me, it’s SO worth the price!!! I’ve tried Rosetta Stone and this app beats Rosetta!!!.Version: 3.2.1

Exactly like class!I have just completed my first semester of Japanese 101 and used this app along side at home (just so that I was constantly practicing). It is truly the same. I'm saying this because if you don't have the time to attend an actual class, this app will give you the exact same content, if not more, than an actual class. If you want to learn Japanese at your own pace, this is THE app!.Version: 3.2.1

Great! A suggestion...First of all, thank you for your great content! Now that I have some time to learn a language, this app has been very effective, while also having some personality. One feature that would make a huge difference to me would be the ability to use split screen mode. Please consider adding this. Thank you!.Version: 3.2.1

Actually works as hard as you doIf you are willing to put in the time, this app makes it about as no nonsense as possible. You get out of it what you put in, and I am seeing results already! Wonderful app, wonderful system that should be a model for other language apps, especially those with non Latin based character sets..Version: 3.2.1

The bestThis is a brilliant program. Absolutely worth every penny. Experience bar is great for my gamer mentality. The information is clear with a little bit of humor added it. They get you started with reading hiragana right off. So far my only complaint is that the program does not introduce katakana right away and subs hiragana for a number of lessons..Version: 3.2.1

Incredibly useful and funThis is the best intro I've ever had to any language, and I've studied several. It's quick and useful as a crash course in hiragana, katakana, grammar, and culture, but I suspect I could also go on from here to a more intensive study -- I don't think they dumbed it down to make it faster to learn. I wish this app existed for every language I want to learn!.Version: 3.2.1

Best Japanese app!I've learned more Japanese from this app than I have from any textbook or tutor! It is well worth the money. I am now fluent in writing hirigana and katagana and can construct full sentences in Japanese and I'm not even completely finished with the program! For this app to be the most effective, I recommend keeping a Japanese journal like you would a regular class. Good luck!.Version: 3.2.1

Well DoneFantastic explanations for beginners. Clears up questions they often have. I studied Japanese some time ago, so for me it's a great review. Allows you to self-test and correct. Audio is clear. Two things it could have is to take you back to areas you are weak in. Also audio recognition to test your pronunciation like Duolingo has..Version: 3.2.1

This should accompany any learning appI’ve tried lots of different Japanese learning apps, many of them very good, and I can truly say that this one will help to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the language. This one should go along with any of the others..Version: 3.2.1

Love this app so much info. But...This app is amazing I've had it for a year now and I don't regret my purchase. The only problem I can think of is I bought this app for the iPad and wanted to put it on my iPhone it says I have to pay all over again. I would like for someone to fix that..Version: 3.2.1

Absolutely AmazingI have never seen an app teach Japanese so well! It’s worth the price for sure if you are interested in learning Japanese. This app has helped me so much, as it touches grammar and cultural tips, while testing you to make sure that you remember them. Thank you so much to the developers! ありがとうございます😊.Version: 3.2.1

Fabulous!Human Japanese is an excellent source of information for the beginner - especially if one is taking entry level Japanese in a formal class and would like an additional iPad/iPhone tutor. The history that is covered is as important as the language itself. Well written and presented. Very much worth its price..Version: 3.2.1

Simply the best all-around Japanese language tool out there.I’ve tried a TON of things over the years, and this is just the most thorough and human-readable tool there is. Great information, good interface, audio playback for hearing how things sound, etc. SO worth the money. Thanks, Brak!.Version: 3.2.1

FantasticThis is the way to write an instructional ebook. The 5 star reviews you see are right on the mark. I would suggest at the beginning you might want to invest in some texts on learning katakana and hiragana. There are some excellent ones out there that have practice pages..Version: 3.2.1

Absolutely top quality teaching toolHJ is smart, well written, and an incredible tool for learning Japanese. The app works like it's supposed to and the material moves at a relaxed and thorough pace. I always feel ready to tackle new material and never feel overwhelmed. 5 stars without question..Version: 3.2.1

Extremely AccessibleApp has great content and is easy to use. The. Lessons are smart and digestible. Have all ready impressed many speakers with understanding of grammar and nuance that is woven throughout this course. More than worth the cost for full versions..Version: 3.2.1

Excellent Learning Tool! It’s not often you can sincerely say a language app is worth every penny...but, this one you can. I hope the author made some good money from this because this is laid out better than any learning app I’ve ever seen..Version: 3.2.1

Split view multitasking?Perfect app and well worth the cost! My only request from the devs is an update to allow split view multitasking on the iPad Pro. I would like to practice writing the characters on a drawing/note-taking app side by side the animated stroke order with the Pencil stylus..Version: 3.2.1

Best Japanese AppI rarely ever write reviews, but I like Human Japanese so much here it goes: best app I've found by far that teaches you Japanese. It starts off on the basics, and builds upon that with more advanced grammar and vocabulary. Just finished this app and am currently on the Intermediate Human Japanese app which is just as good..Version: 3.2.1

Beautifully doneThis app was great before the updates. Although I'm taking a physical class now, reading about the concepts and vocab are helpful intros or reviews. My only wishlist item are harder quizzes (not multiple choice) and kanji. Otherwise great!.Version: 3.2.1

Fabulous!I just finished the free demo of this app and immediately upgraded to the paid version without hesitation. Human Japanese is amazing! The chapters are well-constructed, the quizzes and games are great, and—most importantly—the recordings and grammar breakdowns are super helpful. 10/10; well done!.Version: 3.2.1

I love it!It is very useful and informative. I like how it is presented and the cultural lesson added to the mix not to mention the history included. It makes the reading more like listening to a well loved teacher. It is truly a Human Japanese!.Version: 3.2.1

Best on the MarketThe dev for this has been around a long time, before apps were even a thing. I remember getting the cd for this back in 2012 lol. And in all that time it's still the best deal..Version: 3.2.1

My favorite Japanese language AppIt’s simply; it’s comprehensive; it’s easy to use. I love this App! With it, I’ve learned hiragana and katakana and basic communication. I like the audio portion of the App as well. I highly recommend it..Version: 3.2.1

Very goodIt is a very good app. IT made feel like I am having a lesson by a real teacher in the house. I hope many more people will buy this app if they want a real lesson without any high lesson prices. :).Version: 3.2.1

Very useful!I came upon Human Japanese with some basic reading knowledge and a decent vocabulary. I am very pleased with the format of the lessons, but some of the quiz questions are worded in an awkward manner. Overall I am pleased..Version: 3.2.1

Amazing AppMost value for the money of any app I've ever purchased. You can learn so much for just $12. A class this in depth would cost hundreds, while this only costs $12!!!.Version: 3.2.1

High QualityAfter trying many apps and websites, I can confidently say Human Japanese is my favourite. This app not only teaches you Japanese in a very intuitive manner, but teaches you a lot about English and language in general along the way. I also found that when learning through Human Japanese, it is genuinely rewarding weather I’m reading for a quick ten minutes, or sitting down for a couple hours. Human Japanese does all this and is genuinely fun as well. This will forever be my first recommendation for anyone who wants to learn Japanese..Version: 3.2.1

High qualityI’ve tried many apps and websites (Rocket and Japanese Pod 101 are great, Rosetta is a useful supplement), and have concluded that no one resource is sufficient. Human Japanese is well-crafted, fun to use, and another useful tool in my box of resources. A great place to learn hiragana and katakana!.Version: 3.2.1

Excellent appI have been using HJ for over a year and have found it to be an excellent way to learn Japanese. Each chapter has a theme with vocabulary followed by grammar and including example dialog where you can open an explanation of any sentence. Each chapter concludes with quizzes. I would highly recommend it to anyone..Version: 3.2.1

Great AppI am delighted to have found this App. It is great Thank You!.Version: 3.2.1

Love itSo amazing, I love that I can pick it up whenever and go through it..Version: 3.2.1

Everything you could ask for, and moreThis is an absolutely incredible piece of software for learning Japanese! I've tried out many and this is definitely the best I've ever found. The narration style is friendly and engaging and the bonus cultural notes chapters are very insightful and provide a great break from the more information-heavy chapters. I find the reviews and vocab quizzes to be extremely helpful, and the points system is a great way to visually represent progress. The dialogue scenes are cute and immersive and having audio recordings for every word and phrase is insanely beneficial. I've also learned a bunch about how English works too, so that was a neat little surprise. I've never felt more motivated in my studies of Japanese than when I'm using this app - I would happily buy it all over again and will definitely be recommending it to friends. I can't wait to get to the intermediate level and hopefully some day there will be an advanced level too. Thank you so much, makers of Human Japanese! どうもありがとうございます.Version: 3.2.1

Content is good, but pacing is notFor the most part I've really liked this app. The voiced content is excellent and the historic information is interesting. I have three significant complaints. First, they don't allow you to hide the romaji(romanizations) of the words, which is incredibly frustrating if you're already comfortable with hiragana and katakana. I find myself constantly trying to cover the romaji with my hands but it's just awkward. Secondly, they cram a ton of vocabulary into each chapter without any guided way to practice, and then only ask ten questions in the chapter and vocabulary reviews, meaning it's easy to get 5 stars and feel confident moving on when you really haven't memorized the whole set of words. Smaller chapters with more frequent testing would easily solve this if there's no better way to enforce practice. Finally for the price charged for this app, there really is no good reason to not have the same app for iPad and iPhone. It's an egregious cash grab and I for one will never pay for it on the iPhone now that I've paid for the iPad bundle. The app is good, but not *that* good..Version: 3.2.1

Great app for self teachingExcellent pace and practice for those with zero background in Japanese..Version: 3.2.1

Very nice!Really enjoying my learning experience with this app. Never gets boring..Version: 3.2.1

THE app to learn Japanese! It's as if the author is sitting next to you, working through this new language. Well worth the money..Version: 3.2.1

Human JapanesePretty much perfect. It has everything I need, in a practical package that is lovely to use, and also entertaining and informative. I am looking forward to move to the Intermediate level and continue with HJ. Hope an advanced level will come on at some point. My only complaint is that it cannot synchronize between my iPad and my iPhone but it's oh so minor a complaint..Version: 3.2.1

PerfectVery good app for learning japanese.Version: 3.2.1

Great appReally enjoying the app and approach to learning Japanese so far. The app has a great look and feel to it with some nice cultural learnings as well. Perhaps slightly more content for the price and the ability to sync your progress between devices and lite/full version would make it 5 star worthy. Still highly recommended!.Version: 3.2.1

Great updateThis is a great app to learn Japanese..Version: 3.1

I love it!Purchased many Japanese learning this one is highly recommended. Too bad the iPhone app not compatible with my iPad. I brought both and it's totally worth it. Well done. Otsukaresama!.Version: 2.0.1
