I have a confession to make. My son's favorite game was Fruit Ninja and I was getting increasingly frustrated with having my son waste a lot of time on a fun but mindless game while he was still struggling to master his phonics and learning to read.
So I decided to create our very own phonics slicing game and to my and my son's delight, he now has a new favorite game where he is having fun and learning at the same time.
My sons skills in recognizing letters, blends and digraphs have dramatically improved since he started playing phonics ninja and now I no longer have to feel guilty when I need a five minute break to take care of the laundry or prepare lunch for the kids. I know that they are having fun and that they are learning at the same time.

Phonics Ninja is an exciting educational game that helps kids rapidly learn letter sounds, blends, and digraphs by sight, sound, and touch.
The interface is so easy to use that even a 9 month old baby will delight in using this app.
FEATURES:
• Slice your way through all lowercase letters by sound
• Slice your way through all phonic blends including bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw & tr
• Slice your way through all phonic digraphs including ch, ck, gh, gn, kn, ng, ph, qu, sh, th, wh, wr & tch (trigraph)
• You decide what to focus on - turn individual categories ON or OFF from the settings page. Just press on the ON / OFF button. You can also turn individual letter and phonic sounds ON and OFF within each category.
• Learn by sight, sound, and touch
• Fun game play, sounds, and animations keep kids engaged
• Dynamic game play adjusts difficulty (the number of sight words) automatically based on player skills to keep kids both challenged and entertained vs. getting bored

EASY MODE:

MEDIUM MODE:

HARD MODE:

Adjust difficulty from settings page.
• Wrong answers do not interfere with gameplay, the child can immediately try again and slice the correct answer (most other games are too slow to keep kids interested by interrupting the gameplay and slowly repeating the desired question)
• Play Phonics Ninja from A to Z or in random order (adjustable from settings page)

• Want to work on just a few phonic sounds? No problem… head to the settings page to turn entire categories or individual phonic sounds on and off

It is engaging but there are issuesWhen the app asks for the /k/ sound it throws up both the c and the k. The k is right but the c is wrong. Either fix how you throw the letters up and only have the 1 letter or count both letters correct. I am sure this is true for some of the sounds for vowels..Version: 2.0

SoundsThe thing I find with most apps of this nature is that the vowel sound is added to the end /buh/ vs /b/ or /gruh/ vs /gr/. We should not be teaching kids to sound out words /buh/ /a/ /duh/, bad-because we do not read that way and it is confusing my dyslexic children who are learning to read. When they go to blend the word they do not recognize the word because of the vowel interference.....buh-a-duh vs b-a-d. Is there any way to clean up your sounds?.Version: 1.1
Great errorless learning!I am refreshed by the way this app adjusts so kids will take in correct information no matter what their learning style is. I have a student who will choose every option because he has great iPad skills. But he really needs phonics too. This app only says the sound for the requested phonics and if the student chops the wrong ones it just says nothing, but does not make a negative sound, which can get discouraging. Then it adjusts so more of the desired letters appear, guaranteeing that the child will have to swipe the right sound and get the input of the sound and symbol as they play. Dyslexia TutorAlways looking for a way to make reviewing the 44 sounds of the English language in a fun way. Knowing how to quickly blend 2 consonants together reinforces automaticity and internalization. Kids love playing games, especially on the ipad. This was not a boring way to review digraph and blends, that have been previously taught. Plus I like that you can determine how long the child plays the game. A good way to end a lesson or begin a lesson..Version: 1.0
Pretty good stuffI will use this as a quick warm up with my reading students. Most of the sounds were spot on but a few blends were pronounced with an short a sound at the end but I'm sure it won't break the kids and they'll love the Ninja!.Version: 1.0
Sounds ReviewThis is a great app for my students who are still struggling with letter sounds. I can change the settings to only use the sounds that we have covered and add sounds as we learn them. My students who are receiving interventions for letter sounds needed a fun way to break the monotony of repeated practice and this is it!.Version: 1.0

Great, but...This is GREAT. It doesn't seem perfectly accurate, though. I received incorrect markings on a couple, and I actually sliced them. Even so, I think it's well worth using. Thanks for a really helpful app for kids who learn best by example/nonverbal direction..Version: 1.0

Great!!I love these apps. Great way to increase phonemic awareness. The sounds are pretty spot on. I do wish that there wasn't an added vowel sound at the end of some. The fl sounds like fla, and /p/ sounds like pa... a speech therapist's worst nightmare. If you look past that this is a great app!!.Version: 1.0
