Tl/dr high quality weather model outputs with a great UI, and a great variety of data layers. Simp,y the best tool of its kind for iOS. Also awesome on the desktop. I spent over 30 years of my career using met data and weather models on a daily basis. You can imagine how primitive and time consuming it was in the 90’s. From plugging inputs into command line programs on a server through to modern graphic tools, I’ve seen a lot. The newer tools became part of my daily personal weather tracking, but even those required a lot of computing power. I found Windy early in its development and have not looked back. For activity planning, drone flying, hiking, and just every day weather forecasting it is superb. It lacks an amazing amount of features into an iOS app with a great UI. One thing to be aware of is the granularity of these models, not just in Windy but the models in general. The way the data is displayed could lead a user to think they are getting exact conditions or forecasts for their exact location. In reality there is a learning curve. I live near the ocean and I know the real temperature and wind will have large local impacts. But the big picture of temp trends, pressure, wind direction and system structure are highly accurate. The models show not only the current and forecasted conditions, but let you dive deep into “why”. 10/10. Must have for those concerned with more than text based area forecasts.
Most apps will give you radar and a basic sun, clouds and precipitation forecast. Very few tell you where that forecast came from or offer you 4 forecasts in one app. Also, the configurability of Windy is great, you want wind vectors, great, you want isobars, great, you want temperature colors, awesome and there are many more options you can put on or take off the map. Also, you can “play” out the forecast of each model all the way to the end, which is helpful in finding out the differences between the forecasts and why wind speed or precipitation differs from one to the other. There are many positives to this app, but the last point I’ll mention is that it includes the European model that reportedly costs money and is not available in many other weather apps for that reason. It’s also considered to be one of the most accurate forecasts available. My criticism is mostly about bugs. One is that when dragging the time bar forward, it sometimes gets detached from the forecast, which makes it impossible to forward or reverse to the end. The only way to fix it is completely reset or switch to another forecast and then back to the one you are trying to track. Another issue is that on the phone version, when you zoom out to see the wider map, ie from WA state to see the whole pacific, where our weather comes from, it frequently automatically resets the view. It does this for example when switching forecasts, but it also happens other times and is annoying. That said, it’s faults don’t detract significantly from the fact that it’s the best weather app out there.
This is by far my favorite weather app! It is packed full of features and the weather data is about as real time as you can find. The developers constantly improve upon the existing features but, most importantly, they frequently introduce new features. This is one of the few apps that I have where I am always excited to read the details about new features contained in each app update!! All of the major weather models are on this app and they are updated just as soon as the newest model runs are completed. I rarely pay subscriptions on apps but this is one app that I have paid for the subscription upgrade and i feel like I get every penny and then some out of that subscription. I can’t say enough about windy!!! Just wanted to add a quick update. The developers respond to reviews that are posted on here. That is much appreciated! Even if it is to say thank you for a 5-star rating, I’m confident that a lower rating and/or any complaints or suggestions would be taken into consideration by the development team. That is excellent customer service and a developer team that cares about what their customers want. This is simply an all-around exceptional app! I can’t wait to see what features are in the works for the future!!
It was a frigid and windy morning during the late fall of 2019 in northern Wisconsin. I had been looking at the national weather service reports for the past week. The forecasts were predicting gale force winds, record snowfall, 17-20 foot waves, and the possibility of tornadoes. I was on the road to my favorite surf spot as the sun approached dawn, and I could barely see fifty yards in front of me. While driving through a windy, unpaved, rustic road, a logging truck came hurling at me from around a tight bend. Neither of us would be able to stop in time to prevent an imminent head-on collision. Panicking, I swerved into a ditch, missing the truck by mere inches. My life flashed before my eyes. Time seemed to slow to a halt when all of a sudden, a deep, yet soothing otherworldly voice echoed in my head. It said “download the Windy weather app for reliable, on-demand weather forecasts”. Shivers went down my spine. As I miraculously made it around the logging truck, I had enough speed to go back onto the road, where I continued my drive to the surf spot. When I arrived, I saw the most perfect waves I have ever seen. They looked like they had been machined by the hands of god himself. A gap in the clouds opened, and the ever-radiant sun warmed me as I battled the freezing waters of Lake Michigan. As soon as I ended my session and got out of the water, Morgan Freeman approached me in a white suit. He showed me the Windy forecast from that day. It predicted everything with complete accuracy. Thanks to windy, I am still alive today, and I have an unbreakable connection to the heavens of Earth’s atmosphere.
I loved this app so much! Having lived in 2 locations that are frequented by hurricanes, Florida & Coastal North Carolina, this app is a MUST during hurricane season. I used it all the time on my iPhone 8 with no issues. But I just got the iPhone 11, and noticed one issue I never had on the iPhone 8. And seeing no other reviews describing this same issue (the iPhone 11 has only been out now for 4 days), I felt I should report it just in case others have the same issue, and so maybe a fix can occur. I have tried restarting my phone and reinstalling the app, but problem persists. The issue happens when you try to drag the map to look at other locations. Instead of the animated map moving to reveal more of the map, it zooms in. Making it impossible to look at other locations, other than the default location. I was able to move it only a little but it was a battle getting it to respond at al and would still only do that while simultaneously zooming in. If I am doing something wrong, please let me know! But I still say it’s been the best visual weather app out there! And I hope this problem goes away soon! I will change my rating to 5 stars if I can get it to work again.

Also Can compare them, and probably learn a lot more too if you have less formal meteorological training. Having more access to well formatted data instead of it being fed to you and summarized as in other apps is important especially to those who depend heavily on weather such as myself occasionally working in the marine industry on Great Lakes and outdoor activities or professions. It’s important to understand that models do not always get it perfect so being able to compare them for discrepancy and integrate into your own local knowledge is crucial on the water or anywhere really when serious mission critical planning or at least some decent foresight is required. This app allows you to do that. I’d say this app is the main thing to have and then some shortcuts for a few NOAA pages allowing you to get some of the same information in a low bandwidth format when service is poor … other than Sirius nav weather on an MFD for when there is zero cell coverage… this is what you need to be as confident as anyone can be about completing dangerous marine work on a Great Lake like superior.
I was a huge fan of Storm from WeatherUnderground and hadn't checked out the other options recently, but when The Weather Channel killed Storm and replaced it with a mediocre weather channel version I had a look at the other options and was very happy to find Windy. It's so much much better than the others, let me count (a few of) the ways: You can pick your forecast model! And then compare the different models to see where they differ! That to me is a game changer. The timeline along the bottom is so great to see how pressure and fronts will move - I feel like I've learned a lot just by using the app. The many layer options are great - set it for what you want to see and don't be distracted by what you don't. And of course the wind animation options make for a visually appealing interface. Seeing how the different altitude winds are moving and changing is so useful and interesting. I'd gladly pay money for this app, there are just so many great things to say about it. And if all you want is a sun, a cloud, or an umbrella for where you live that's there for you too. I was bummed when Storm was killed off but am so happy to have found this great app.
Addendum to my previous post: I LOVED this app, but after the new price hike, I just can’t afford it anymore. Greed has taken hold of everyone, and everything. A.I. is not helping! (Artificial intelligence. For people that have none)! We’re all gonna be out of a way to make a living soon. Why pay someone, when something will do it for free? There’s no human interaction anymore. I fear for my future, my family and friends, and, well… everyone. So sorry to go, but I’ve got to save for more important things, like food and shelter. Best of luck to you all… If you can afford it, below is my original review. I’ve tried a LOT of weather apps, but this one is the best! Whether you’re at home, or traveling, driving or hiking, it has the most comprehensive set of features of them all! With this app, I don’t even bother looking at the forecast from my local tv stations any more. I’m not a meteorologist, but I think I could be with this app! There are more views and options than I could ever use. Radars, layers, widgets… you name it, it’s there. Kudos to the development team! Keep up the good work guys!
Was skeptical at first that this could depict weather changes so precisely, but found that it is mostly correct. I think a lot of it is due to the quirky geography of the mountains and lengthy valleys near the waterways that I commercial fish during the winter months. Windy seems to be very quickly incorporating these local weather phenomena into their depictions, so we’ll see how precise it becomes later on. Just during the past week or so there have been many multiple changes in wind direction and intensity, and Windy has managed to plot all them out very well. A vast improvement over the NOAA text and audio based descriptions that also lack general time periods when the wind is going to switch and intensify. I do not own a large fishing boat that can brute force it’s way through anything over 30 knots, so I have to play by the rules the wind lays out for me. Windy has vastly improved my planning for weather headed my way. Very surprised Windy is as good as others have said it is, and very happy with this free service. It is rapidly gaining popularity among the commercial fleet here in Alaska.
I have been using windy for the past few years and nothing compares. The weather affects my job a lot so I’m always checking the app, it is so incredibly useful to be able to see not only the conditions of the town I’m in but the entire area all at a glance. I find a lot of times that the default apple weather app will show that it’s cloudy all day, but windy days there’s a chance of rain all day and it ends up raining. This app has also completely changed the way I choose where to hike and do road trips. I like to play things by ear based on the weather, so when I want to go for a hike I look at windy to see where the weather is the best and I choose a hike based on that. And when I’m on a road trip I am always looking at the forecast for the following days and I choose which direction to go based on where the weather will be better. Obviously no app can be 100% accurate and I’m not claiming windy is but it helps me make more informed decisions that an app without weather radar can’t provide.
Overall I have to rate this app 5 stars as the features are on point. As a boat captain I use several apps to get an accurate forecast of winds and weather. This is one of the top 2. To the developer, however, as I Love Windy… PLEASE STOP taking away the free features that have always been. They are depleting. I used to be able to have a further out forecast and used to be able to get an idea of the how the upcoming weather would prevail even after the forecast was taken away… but now the future is greyscale and I Hate that. This is what brought you from #1 to #2. I have recommended tons of paid users to your app, and while users that are completely content (or Were) with your free features may not seem as valuable to you… it’s us that recommend the app to others who find the premium features more valuable to their own needs. Aside from that. Love it. But not as much as I did and I am now researching other apps to convert to that have all those features you took away.
When chasing big white-tailed deer, you must understand weather, the movement of air in particular! They protect themselves and scent check scrapes and breeding doe by smelling the wind, usually from downwind of a scrape of situation. Windy allows me to first give a detail of wind movement at several elevations. Then, reconfirm or truth the information. I can make intelligent decisions based on this information. I.E. getting into this hunting area, is the wind at my back carrying my scent in front of me. In my facing carrying my scent behind me. Also to consider, High and Low air pressure will affect deer movement. Windy HELPs me predict wind direction, determining when that buck moves and from what direction. Use w/Spartan Forge or onX hunt. But there are so many other features in the Windy app. What Catches your eye. I can decide to fly my drone, my plane or go surfing. PWS, should I fly fish today of will tomorrow be better, there are sooooo many other Details go explore, I recommend Windy.
Honestly I never review apps, because at best most are simply acceptable for their designed purpose. This app, however, is worth mentioning, in that it is easily the most comprehensive (not to mention accurate) weather resource you can put on your phone, with a super intuitive interface, and greater functionality in the free version than you can get in all other paid weather apps I’m aware of. Furthermore, and almost most importantly to me, this app is basically ad-free, and doesn’t bloat up your phone with unnecessary and invasive adware the way most others do. Simply put, this app is exceptional, fantastic on all levels, and something that I will eventually pay for simply to support. Kudos and thanks to Ivo & the team for making this app a reality. Weather geeks (professional or otherwise,) do yourself a favor and download this one. It’s really a beautiful thing.
Very user-friendly for being as in depth as it is, and that makes it a both a joy and a useful teaching tool. But I want more. I’d really like this to take the place of all, or at least most, of the web sites I use. I’ll list 3 things specifically: 1. Access to more computer models. Instead of just the deterministic GFS and ECMWF, add the 30 and 50 ensembles, respectively, or at least a blend. The Canadian model and its ensembles. The HRRR. The UKMET. Any of the big boys that I haven’t listed here. Also some CAM’s for short term. And being able to plot the data in charts and meteograms instead of just maps. 2. Forecasts, short-term and long-term, for the oscillations that drive the earth’s weather, i.e. the Madden-Julian and ENSO. 3. Archived history of weather maps and surface observations at airport, marine, mesonet and personal weather stations. I understand these are big asks—and not likely to be of much use to most people—but as a 2nd, elite subscription tier for 9.99 a month, I’d buy in.
We live aboard our boat full time. In Continental US waters, there are lots of weather apps as well as local forecasts to keep one safe on the water. Outside the US, radar and forecasting gets a lot harder. Windy has been the sole app that gives us our local radar and forecast as well as all the regular features used for sailing. With the addition of more hurricane features, it has become indispensable to assist with keeping us informed and safe. That’s a lot for an app. My only beef is that when you open the app, it always has the New Hurricane Tracker page that you must X out of to close. Can we not leave that there? When I’m constantly opening the app, it got old real fast. Otherwise, I truly appreciate the local weather in remote areas as well as all of the regular features. Thank you so very much!
I have weather XM subscription on my Garmin chart plotter, but it only gets me a wind view out 3 days. Windy gives me an outlook on wind and swell direction as far as a week out. I find this invaluable for our summer cruising in the Bahamas. It allows me to line up wind and waves to best suit my boat and allows me to give my passengers a better ride on passages. Together with Weather XM and internet weather reports, I can minimize bad weather experiences for my guests (and wife) so they will want to come back again and again! I use Windy more than any of the others mentioned because it’s so handy and can be taken easily from boat to boat. Wherever I carry my phone (which is everywhere) I can get wind and sea conditions. If you’re a boater, you will love this app.
As a truck driver in the southwest, this app is amazing because I can monitor wind speeds and weather to make my job a little bit safer since it’s always windy here. we actually use it in our dispatch office as well. I started out with the free version, but I liked it so much I opted to get the premium subscription. I’d say Radar Omega is a little better if you’d like to track just thunderstorms and tornadoes, but this app is especially great for tracking windspeeds, but also does a good job on other severe weather. With the premium version you have access to all kinds of different layers between wind, rain, snow, ozone, temperatures, drought maps, all kinds of stuff. 50+ different ones actually. i’d recommend it and I’d say it’s probably the best “all around” weather app that I’ve come across so far.
I’m a Captain for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and have to stay focused on the weather. Windy gives me the best of the best forecasts, both local where the ship is, and equally important is what’s the prediction for days to come are. By using Windy actively, I am able to plan the cruise, inform the guests so they can plan the port days with excursions and daily activity so they get the most out of the vacation and cruise. Even when I am on vacation, both home in Norway or at my condo in Florida, I use Windy to plan my own days, wether it is planing for a round of golf, a day at the beach or any other outdoor activity. Windy has so many options and I love the Pro version which gives me everything from 10 days forecast all over the world, a hurricane update or the local forecast including local rain showers the next hour.
Dark Sky was a marvelously innovative weather app that Apple brought and then turned into the grotesque mashup that is now the Apple weather app. Such a waste. But all is not lost: Windy picks up the torch with a fast, fluid, intuitive user interface that displays a multitude of weather charts at the tap of a finger. Weather radar, satellite, wind direction and velocity, lightning (with sound if you like), waves(!), air quality, and more additional charts than space conveniently allows me to mention. There’s a paid tier that supposedly gives you things like higher radar resolution, but the free version seems to work well for me. On the other hand I might subscribe just so that when Apple comes calling the folks at Windy won’t really need the money.
I have used Windy for over a year and value it enough to subscribe to the premium level. It is worth the annual fee and a 5-Star rating except for one single missing feature. The app is very flexible and powerful. With a selections from the menu a user can see anything from from a simple local forecast to see the long term trends in an area. If you are a pilot, surfer, or someone who really wants a deep dive in to important aspects of the weather that is easily available too. Also important - Windy accurately forecasts the weather. It even allows you to chose from several forecasting models should you believe a particular model is more accurate. Yet all of the flexibility provides some frustration, and judging by the forum, many other users. Windy seems to have a single default view that applies to all users. So then each time we open the app we have to remember and find all of the menus selections to display the weather the individual user wants. It takes a minute or two to get this set so no big deal - but then again this is required every time a user opens the app. If Windy allowed a user to set a default view this would solve that issue and then from my perspective, be the only weather app I need.
WINDY HELP ⚠️ Somehow cannot clear notifications and stuck with the same 6 notifications. Update - got it resolved. Had to delete all my alerts and reset them. I know we can only add a limited number of locations, if using the free version and I believe it's the same for premiums, more options, but still limited. It would be great to have the option to add temporary locations when it comes to going on trips. Free, up to 7 locations for up to 3 months. Premium, 10 locations up to a year. Generally, I enjoy using the app and it keeps me updated on the weather for my location. I do like the inclusion of the position of the moon and sun. Though I don't like the recent update to the city heatmap. And even before that update, I didn't like it giving the city heat a whole state away instead of the closest city in my state and area. It would have been nice to have more options for the city heatmap. Can Windy please go back to notifications where as the push notifications preview the weather instead of the coordinates notifications under alerts. And would love to see the current road conditions in a future update. It seems Windy will take your review/suggestion to heart, which is a plus in my book.
As a working pilot on Kodiak Island Alaska for almost 2 decades and 12,000 hours PIC time Having a weather forecast that could be trusted or even shown in semi-real time would have made a big impact on one of the most dangerous vocations there was. Most of my peers laughed at forecasts due to the lack of accuracy. Instead they relied on what the weather was at a given moment, for flight planning, not what it would be in an hour or two. Pilots & passengers both are made safer by this app that both can interpret, and formulate risk based predictable data that’s reliable, over and over again. That coupled with GPS Navigation has made the industry much safer today. It impacts much more than “Am I going to need a raincoat “? Yes you can argue, that it does save lives, both in the Aviation and Maritime community. Thanks Windy
As a developer myself, I really appreciate the quality of work going into an app like this. The fact that you have 5 comparable forecast models that can also be compared with ground station data really sets this apart. It’s hard to ask for more. That being said… I want more!!! Could you please incorporate meteoblue maps, at least for temperature and wind? It’s misleading when I select meteoblue as the forecast model but the map continues to display the previous “map supported” global model (ECMWF GFS or ICON). If meteoblue only supports some data, I’d prefer a warning message saying “we can’t show this because it doesn’t exist”, rather than the current behavior of showing me something that does exist but isn’t what I asked for. Additionally, selecting NAM 5km from the same menu seems to prematurely “snap back” to ECMWF. I dislike, but still prefer, the tendency of NAM 5km to only switch to ECMWF when the modeled region goes *completely* out of view (which is my experience when selecting NAM from the side-bar, rather than within the forecast menu). I’d like no switching at all, but it’s not a big inconvenience. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
I’ve been a severe weather enthusiast for years I also have a very busy, not-weather related profession so I always seem to spend the first week before tornado reason trying to relocate all of the meteorological data online. No more! With Windy I can old-school my forecasts based on surface data, or I can flip through model data. The settings and visual layering are incredible! Thanks to the developers for an amazing, thoughtful app! I’m just kicking myself that I’m only now finding this. If you are looking for a standard, user-friendly “here’s your local forecast”, kind of app, this app is probably not your best bet. If you are a chaser, spotter, forecaster, weather enthusiast or anyone working in the marine world, this app is the best I’ve come across!
I absolutely love this app, as for me it has been spot on and upgrades and updates a a plenty. I’ve had other weather apps and honestly this one is the best….there a little bit of a learning curve and that is the only thing I have to say in any negative comment. If you fly boat or drive often or just really enjoy knowing what the day is going to be like then look no further as this app is the one and only one you actually need….do yourself a favor and try it I honestly don’t think you will be dissatisfied…thank you staff and all others at windy weather, you all are amazing and have knocked this thing right out of the park can’t say thank you enough!!! 👍😎
Living in Hawaii, the weather depends a lot on the topography. I find the NAM weather model option does a good job with detailed information that takes this into account, and the EVMWF model is great for general patterns including hurricane path forecasting. When the volcano one island over is very active (like now) it shows me when to expect the vog to be thick. I use the windcams layer a lot, too, to get a peek at what it’s like where I’m going or to choose the right beach. Accumulated rain is another layer I find very useful for planning my week, including how much water my plants will likely need. This is only a tiny fraction of what Windy offers. It’s an elaborate and powerful app that I discover new uses for every year!
App is great! I thought I should support the developers because I use it all the time so I opted for the premium version. I would rate it 5 stars but for the problems I had activating the premium features. To activate the premium subscription one needs to login through the Windy app. However, I created my account years ago on the web, and the app did not recognize my login credentials so there was no way to “activate” my premium subscription. I tried numerous times using different paths, changing passwords, etc but could not get it to work. However, the next day I tried again and it was successful. I don’t know what happened, but I am happy with the app.
Since the Weather Channel ruined the Storm app, I turned to Windy to get the wind animation and multi-city forecasts that I was accustomed to. Windy provides all that I seek in a weather app, and more. It did take time to find things, and my iPad version still will only show 3 overlay options, but lots of other display choices I do not care about and did not select in the same column of choices. Once I (accidentally) found the meteograms I am fascinated, but wish there was some place to learn what the detailed meaning. I also wish that front symbols would be able to display with temperatures, wind, or rain. I find the thunderstorm info distracting and wish I could turn it off.
There’s no question that this is an awesome app. My one hang up is that it defaults to the ECMWF forecast model, which is consistently wrong for my region (Midwest. I’ve found NAM to be most accurate. ). So to get the most accurate forecast, I have to open the app, push Home, then change the forecast model within a dropdown menu. As far as I can tell there is no way to set the forecast model to one other than ECMWF. Might sound like a minor annoyance, but this also affects the widget forecasts and I’m constantly thinking it’ll be colder or hotter than it really will be, or that it will rain on a given day. I’ve cancelled my Premium auto renew, but will happily resubscribe when this is resolved.
I’ve been looking for a long time for an app with this much functionality, as well-designed, and with as active community engagement. And, at the moment, it’s free, and with no ads. If you find it as useful as I do, however, the subscription is very reasonable compared to the couple of other “professional” services I have seen. I happily signed up. These people are obviously focused on providing the best and most usable data and visualization possible. I’ve seen too many really good starts go down the drain when someone corporate comes along with better ideas for monetization that ends up killing the thing (I’m looking at you, Storm). I tip my hat to the Windy team.
I don’t often write reviews for apps, but after years of using this one, it was time to show some love. I was introduced to Windy by my college calculus professor in 2018 and I’ve been obsessed ever since. The visuals are absolutely stunning and are incredibly helpful for planning adventures. MANY times I’ve decided what part of a state/region to go hiking in using the rain/thunder or cloud map layer. The ability to compare various forecast models is super helpful too for helping keep information in context. I’ve been paying for the subscription at $19/yr which I think is the perfect sweet spot of value for the additional features provided. Thanks Windy for being so awesome!
If you’re a person who enjoys looking out for family. This app keeps you informed. All you have to do is look and see. Remember though the weather around you is just as important. I’ve been using to check to check the weather outside for a while now and it’s pretty outstanding how honest it has been. Withought a hassle. My only recommendation is a little bit more accurate radar. I’m not sure if the reading is 100% sometimes the clouds build up to fast or just blow too fast. Regardless the accuracy is pretty spot on for wind. If you know how to read it it’s a helpful tool too. You can use it for safety.
Edit: This is actually a five star app, I rated at 4 stars because I never give 5 or 1 star reviews. The reason being that I myself throw out 1 and 5 star reviews in attempt to find an honest opinion. Hopefully I expressed my gratitude toward all the hard workers and long nights they’ve had in making this the best weather app out there. Thank you Windy! It’s like how the web should be, a free exchange of information. I love the detailed information and free layers. Need more information? This app has it. I’ve been using it for years and it is the best! Thank you for everyone involved in making this a free and powerful weather app! Edit 2: its probably closer to a decade I’ve been using your app and im not ashamed to say that :p
I am a sailor, forest fire warden, pilot, an outdoor enthusiast who has been a paid subscriber for many years, and have always used Windy to get a good overview of the long-range models. It is the best general presentation of forecast models available. I used Windy on both an iPhone and iPad Pro with equal success. However, in the last few weeks it has become very unstable and crashes soon after initiating. I have followed all the developer’s recommendations for correcting the installation on the user’s end but to no avail. I suspect there still is some condition that they haven’t resolved and I hope they can figure it out. Good luck!
I love Windy! I use it on long distance offshore singlehanded sailing passages. I use it out at sea in conjunction with StarLink and it is an amazing tool. Except for it’s inability to keep track of my actual location. I’ve spoke with the team and unfortunately have not been able to make any headway but I am hopeful they will address this issue soon as it is critical to the offshore sailor and other adventurers in remote locations using StarLink or other satellite communications platforms. With this issue resolved Windy will most certainly become the weather modeling and routing tool of choice for most if not all remote adventurers.
Windy is a fabulous app. A few years ago, its developers surprised the world with a website of animated maps showing wind flow in a manner anyone could intuitively understand—and appreciate as beautiful art! Today, the app provides layers and layers of weather and related information, both current and forecast for days into the future. But it still lacks a Feels-Like layer. Most people want to know two things: Will I get wet if I go outside? And will I be hot or cold? Temperature and precipitation are the go-tos. And for the past 20 years, computers have enabled meteorologists and weather apps to compute and display Wind Chill in the winter and Heat Index in the summer. Once Windy adds Feels Like, the app will be complete.
I got windy 5 years ago now and have never take my boat to the ocean without checking out the app prior to departure since. The best part of windy for me living on the California coast is being able to find pockets of wind free water. The directional arowws will show where and when you can find little pockets of windless or less windy waters. Finally, l love the accuracy of the app in my five years with windy I’ve only seen one day be far off of what was forecasted, I attribute the miss of that day due to major forest fires in our area. In conclusion if you fish or boat in general Windy is your most essential app to keep you your friends and Family safe
I’ve been using the Windy app for about 3 years now and no other app pales in comparison. The fact that you actually get access to multiple forecast models including the European model is quite phenomenal as it’s not offered on many (if any) other weather applications. Many of my friends have come to think I’m some sort of weather guru as I’m always warning them when the wind is going to be kicking up. We live in an area with quite a few trees so being a step ahead as well as warning friends and family is always a good thing. Keep up the stellar work!
This app is the most complete I've found and tells you day you can also see the days of a lot of rain. And I can say I've never removed it from my phone because I've had it since the hurricane irma and right now there's a hurricane coming to Mexico but it doesn't offer aAnd I can say I've never removed it from my phone because I've had it since the hurricane irma and right now there's a hurricane coming to Mexico but it doesn't offer any danger. Unload it. You will not regret putting play and you will see the days as you walk and you see the day the hurricane arrives at us. Thanks to us.
I have found Windy to be one of the best weather apps available. I particularly like the ability to view four different weather models, and to look forward several days with the predictions. A few suggestions: It would be nice if you could see both the selected menu item AND the particular legend. Currently, after you select a specific item, I.e. rain accumulation, you have to X out of the menu before the ledge down come up at the bottom. It would be nice if you could see both at the same time and just circulate between menu items. The font is pretty small at the bottom...great data, but have a look at the formatting....in some cases things are impossible to read since they are overlapping, such as cloud altitudes. Rain vs. Snow accumulation.......it’s confusing. Looks to be the same physical accumulation data, but we know inches of snow isn’t inches of water.... Would be nice to be able to zoom the map like all other apps........instead of just having several different fixed scales. This is a wonderful app, and I encourage you to keep making it better. Thanks.
I have been a practising professional meteorologist for over 40 years with the Canadian Armed Forces (sea, land, and air), the Meteorological Service of Canada, and with the private sector as a consultant. Positions I have held include Manager of the Ottawa Regional Weather Forecast Centre, and subsequently Director of Aviation and Defence Services providing all aviation weather services to Nav Canada and all weather and oceanographic services to Canada’s military. Retired now and an avid cyclist and outdoors person, I use Windy daily for all my weather needs no matter where on the globe I may happen to be and as the main tool in providing personalized forecasts to friends and family scattered over the globe. It is a superb global weather data and forecast outputs visualization tool. It integrates numerous data sets from numerous countries seemlessly via an extremely intuitive user interface. Data sets such as precipitation from weather radars and strikes from lightning networks are combined into a common multi-national map background that one can scale easily. Ditto for most orbiting weather satellites. It pulls in 3-D numerical weather model outputs from numerous major modelling centres and provides tools to view multiple output fields overlaid onto scalable maps or in tables covering time spans, the vertical dimension, or surface outputs from multiple models together for comparison. In a word, it blows away the tools presently on most professional weather forecasters desks in major national weather services and private sector firms and, best of all, it is FREE!
If you’re really into weather, this is the app for you.
Since the last update, the app is crashing. Even if I restart it, there's nothing to do
Although I like the app they need to implement Apple standard to sign up so I can use hide my email.
This is the main app I use to find weather info for not only my area, but globally. The only recommendation is to make the weather radar display different colors for different types of precipitation such as blue for snow and pink for freezing rain and ice pellets.
I find this to be my best weather app and accuracy is fair. Comparing forecasts across a number of apps gives me the best rural forecast. I have found windy to be the most accurate and I appreciate that past weather is not deleted as soon as “now” passes in time. This allows me to see what occurred overnight, upon waking. I would like if there was instructions or a tutorial as I am not able to use many of the features. Kindly, Brad Interlake MB Canada 🇨🇦
Incredibly entertaining, informative, and exciting app to use. With so many features I often lose track of time just playing around with this app! And the traffic cameras are awesome!!
The best application ever, I use it a lot in my work to be able to plan my trip, I would recommend it to everyone because it is reliable 👍👍👍👍👍
Especially the nice meteogram display. Compact and efficient, clearly shows temps and pressure trends, cloud cover, precipitation. Oh did I mention it’s also accurate? All that’s missing is the nicely Interpolated radar maps from the now defunct dark sky. Monetization is unobtrusive and very reasonable, a rare thing nowadays.
Windyty is awesome!!! Hardcore 5 stars!! It helps me fish, hunt, plan my kayaking and mountain biking trips so as the amount of snow for snowmobiling and skiing. It’s such a precise application on wind speed, gusts, temperature and even the amount of snow on the ground and it’s density. Sick app, try it out!
Great app but needs more Widgets!! Particularly the smaller square one for the iPhone! Will give 5 stars for more widgets, but won’t be paying for it!
I’m a kayak commuter and my life depends on Windy. Gives a 7-day snapshot of key factors, or you can dig deep. Does wind, swell, temperature, and lots more. Amazingly accurate on rain, in 3 hour windows. It is my most trusted, favourite and most accurate weather app.
I go offshore west coast vancouver island and rely on Windy forecast and weather and found Windy to be most reliable and accurate!!!!!
Easily one of the very slickest weather app out there. Nice work team!!!
As retired storm chaser I appreciate this app for so many reasons and used it for several years because I can still keep track weather conditions for family and friends around the world, give them heads up what’s coming towards them. Thanks Windy 😉
Great app! Accurate information for my fishing trip planning. Definitely worth recommending
Un platform pour aider a preparer la semaine ou bien plus
I use nothing else now.
This is my go to app for weather conditions regardless of my outdoor adventures are on the water in the mountains are at the beach!
Best weather forecast that I have ever used.only one that I will use to plan my motorcycle trips.love this site
If accurate weather forecasts are important to you then Windy is all you need.
First experience of windy.com came from our Tesla, it showed up on the browser home screen, and a bit of research determined it was used to assist the car with wind, but there’s so much more. And now relying on the app on my device, it gives me a tremendous amount of information and the accuracy is incredible. Can’t say enough good stuff about windy.com.
Very good within 24hrs and better than the weather app for forecast. Great weather aid
Vraiment content de ce système très efficace
I had seen mariners using this app on a couple TV shows I was watching and checked it out. I’ve been loving it ever since. I am amazed at some of the specific levels you can look at and the detail that you can get into. I learn something almost everyday while looking around. It’s one of my go-to weather apps.
The best weather app by far. Always accurate and absolutely worth the subscription!!! This is the ONLY APP I use for weather!
Very accurate, my go to weather forecast
It’s the only app for checking weather.
Most accurate weather information I found so far! I strongly recommend for anyone travelling often as it offers hourly forecast along with webcams!
It is so informative and helpful, very accurate
Powerkite, hiking, biking sont bien planifiées avec tous les possibilités que nous offre Windy !!! Merci !
I use this almost everyday and especially love it when we travel abroad as it shows the wind , the actual true weather in the destination we are travelling too. The cameras at the locations where we travel is amazing. I highly recommend this app and now have at least 25 of or closest friends using it.
I use it all the time. Sailing or just daily use. Robert
It used to be that when I selected the radar view it displayed immediately. Now it just shows the grey map until I either zoom in or out. IOS 26.4.2
Windy is by far the most accurate weather app I’ve found on the App Store. Amazing detail with the various overlays it allows you to select to understand the atmosphere above.
Been using this app for a while and it’s definitely come in handy. Lots of filters, accuracy might be off on active fires but all in all its a great app
Windy.com Negative Reviews and Ratings
I use this app every single day to read my flying spot. Gives great snapshot of weather and wind expectations. But, every single time I load this app I have to locate the spot I wanna check, zoom into the spot the amount I want, choose the wind model that I want to use, choose the time interval I want to use! All I wanna do is check the same spot exact spot I looked at last time, and it doesn't remember a single setting! So much time is wasted zooming in, locating my spot, choose the model, choose the interval, slide to the correct time! All I wanted to do is stay on the wind model I watched last time. Stay at the zoom level and location I viewed last time! It is so infuriating! Why does it every single dang time default to ECMWF. Why does it every single time default to a super wide view of the general area? Why does it every single time default to three hour time interval!? I waited a long time to pay for the app because it made me so mad. And now that I have, I'm just more mad. But it's still the best tool to use. I just wish it would remember my last viewing session and default to my last viewing session. How hard could it be?
Just sat through YET ANOTHER severe weather event the windy app gave no heads up about. Major thunderstorm, torrential downpour, regional flood advisories and what heads up did windy give? Nada! In fact it predicted no precipitation, no thunder storm and showed partly sunny as it’s weather forecast. DO. NOT. USE. This app could get someone killed. Fortunately I have other apps such as Weather Channel which did alert about this and was accurate. And this is far from the first time this app has failed to indicate bad weather, it’s “accuracy” is so bad that I can’t consider this app anything more than a toy, something from a Cracker Jack box. Use at your peril Update per developer response: making excuses about the different models being at fault is sickening and outright reckless. This is a clear case of “Garbage in Garbage Out” the Devs knowingly supply garbage data and happily let their users suffer the consequences — hopefully after paying for “premium” of course. The Dev response should alarm anyone as it only confirms my review and statement that this app is dangerous and should not be used. I’ll be following up with Apple Store Support since I don’t think an app with such potential for real life harm should be allowed on the store
This was the greatest weather app I’ve ever seen and I gladly pay the subscription price for premium. However, I’m starting to feel like the developer is just trying to put as many bells and whistles into it as possible without regard to quality of experience. The radar, which was the most solid thing about this app, was recently updated and it is no longer usable. Not only did they do away with easy ways to view radar loops, but they changed the radar smoothing algorithm and now instead of a nice fluid progression it’s jumps and warps in unrealistic ways. Also, they have layered precipitation type over the radar with no way to remove it and it’s so intrusive that I can’t easily make out precipitation intensity (colors). The radar needs to go back to how it was in November. Otherwise, the rest of the app, as great as it is, just isn’t worth it. I’m placing this post here because it seems to be monitored more closely than the feedback forum.
Yet another Weather app that claims it Has to have my location. I simply want to designate a city and have it give me the weather for that city. I don’t want the weather at my location! I know the weather at my location. I have eyes. I want the weather at other places where I have interests, like property and loved ones. You don’t need to know where I am to tell me the weather in my city. This is purely an insidious ploy to sell my personal information. Update: Received a developer response, with the standard statement: ‘ we are sorry you feel this way…’ I have been unsuccessful, thus far, getting an email through to the email address given in the developer response. So, if you are reading this, please read my initial review, which is very much explanatory of my issues with your app. This has nothing to do with feelings. You should read the review before you send an email asking me to change it. Fix your app, and I will buy it. When you develop an app, THINK FIRST!!! You should especially think about privacy.
I wanted to like this app. It has some interesting features, the radar graphics are clear, and I like the webcams. That said, it doesn’t have a clear forecast synopsis, just some tiny hourly figures at the bottom of the screen that are difficult to read. Also, it wouldn’t default to my location but was miles off. Adding favorites is not intuitive and involves a couple steps. I did subscribe, as I thought that would give me an actual forecast, but I still couldn’t see one after clicking every possible option. I canceled immediately. Hopefully, I’m not stuck with the loss of my $. Follow up: buyer beware. Don’t subscribe if you have doubts about the value of this app. Even though I cancelled in a matter of minutes, after realizing that I didn’t get anything additional for the money, I was charged for an entire year for an app that is not useful to me. I sent this review at least a week ago and it hasn’t been published. Apparently, only positive reviews are posted.
I’ve been using Windy for a number of years and have found it quite useful so vey often. The latest “improvements” to the app are just awful. When an app that’s been around for so long, and the UI is good, a major change to the interface means it’s like getting a different app and starting over. Over the weekend I used windy on my iPhone for a trip over to Catalina Island off SoCal. Very accurate and useful. The forecasts were very good and useful. Two days later, I’m home and open Windy on my iPad Pro to plan my next sail. I am fumbling around trying to find the information which was so useful in the past. Gone is the menu at the bottom of the screen, when tapped, the wind arrows at the location chosen location which gave a quick and easy display of the forecast over time by sliding the date/time cursor at the bottom. Now, the time for the forecast is at the bottom of the scree but the predicted wind speed and direction as at the top of the screen. So it’s a constant up down up down up down scan to get the forecasted wind and time. Without the wind arrows for a quick display of the forecast, Windy has become much more cumbersome to use. I’ve been through the menu multiple times but cannot find a setting for the wind arrows on the selected forecast location. So VERY frustrating of an update.
I’ve been using the Windy app (free version) for a while now and have been happy with it overall. I particularly like the lack of ads and the rich set of map overlays. Today, I decided to buy the Premium upgrade for two reasons. First, I’m willing to provide financial support for an app that I use regularly and it seems like a completely reasonable price for the value I get. Second, however, I was swayed by the mention of integrated Tide information within the app. That would be a nice additional feature since I use the app mainly for boating. Unfortunately, it seems very misleading to highlight this feature. There is no robust tide information available but just a very basic chart that shows the tide going up and down without any readings or magnitude. Sort of useless and disappointing.
The new update has destroyed the user experience on the app. The UI changing has made it much more challenging and frustrating to use, to the point where I am going to have to delete the app. It’s just unusable for me, they fixed a UI that was PERFECT. One of the best things about the app was how simple it was. Now it’s clunky, complex, and just annoying to use. Windy provided me with much useful data but it’s nothing I can’t find through other resources which I’m afraid I will have to do now. I do hope the makers of this app correct the decision to change the UI and revert it back to the original. It’s very unfortunate that I have to stop using this app, because I really enjoyed it and it really helped me out. But it’s not worth it when they took away part of what made it enjoyable and usable. I hope the makers see this, please correct this update, you’re going to lose lots of users because of the new UI.
Every time I try to ise this app I end up with a headache. Everyone raves that it has the most accurate surf report and it does. However, there is no option to make the font larger and I cannot see any of the info just the arrows. Second, it takes forever to find the place to see the surf conditions. There is a pin on the right, but when you tap it it tell you to go to the main, yet there is nowhere labelled main menu. I have never in my life experienced a more user un-friendly app. I have tried so many times because I really want the information. How can an app be rated so highly that is so difficult to use? I suppose its because if its accuracy. Please please please make changes to make it easier to use and also give an option to increase the font size. I suppose once app designers reach 50 they will begin to understand the importance of this.
Well the long range forecast has been moved to the “premium” platform. At least the various models still remain but I assume they would be next on the chopping block to try and force people to the paid premium version. The long range forecast with the ability to see the different model solutions was the main reason I used the windy app. Now that it is gone, I guess I will just stay on weatherunderground website for my weather data. Weatherunderground is more grounded in reality but it “was” fun to see the extremes from the raw models. You are free to use whatever business model you want. It’s an interesting app but not worth paying for the premium features. Without the long range forecast, it’s no better than the other apps so I uninstalled Windy. Wish you well, hope this works for you.
They are now removing features to force you to subscribe. They’ll slowly restrict anything useful using this method until it’s worthless. Terrible business model.
Just wondering why my new phone has no snow depth shown on app. Do I have to pay subscription to get it back ? Just wondering do not want to pay if it’s not available. Thank you
I dont understand how an app called windy no longer shows wind information? What happened to this, it was the only reason I would look at the app. Is it too much to ask for you to put the wind back in to windy?
Took away previously free features (long term weather radar) and locked them behind the premium version. What’s left on the free version is not very useful. Disappointed that they decided to take this direction with the app.
Expensive subscription fees, and now deliberately slowing down the app unless we pay????
It was good until a month ago. Temperature differences 10 - 15 degrees ????
Windy used to be great. I used it for years for high level surveying. Recent changes has made this program absolute junk. I can no longer recommend it, or even use it. Sad, that they made such poor decisions that they ruined a really good idea in short order. They should fire the people who implemented the changes over the last two years. These people know nothing about GIS or weather. I am a GIS professional and scientists, and this app is now junk.
When this app first came out it was free now you can’t get the long range forecast unless you pay the money 👎
Now you have to pay an asinine amount of money to see what the sky looked like more than 2 hours ago! Such a massive disappointment. Not sure if it's ignorance, greed or what but it's a huge blow to those who used the app to help learn about the weather and don't have extra money to burn on random subscriptions! Thanks a lot 👍
Automatically updated and once free services are now premium only. Classless.
Well I have been enjoying the Windy App for many years until you’ve decided to make the most basic features only accessible to those that upgrade! Looking at the upgrade features isn’t even worth the cost. These forecasts models are really useful to have and only making them available to those who upgrade is really disappointing! I’ve been very impressed with your app and have always recommended it to others, until now! I couldn’t write a review with less than 2 stars???
The app used to be my favourite weather app, until Feb 6 2023, when they made the advanced features locked for free users, unless paying either 25$ a year for a subscription or 40$ a year to buy without subscription. Make the old features free again, and I will think about redownloading. Until then, you can say goodbye to your favourite user. - sincerely, Parker

Greatly inaccurate. That is all.
