Lingvano - Learn Sign Language Positive Reviews
Great appWorth the price. My plug and reminder, you are paying for Deaf individuals work compensation which is a big deal. Second, I have been taking classes with people in my local ASL Deaf cohort and decided to try this out to support my receptive and maintenance skills. It teaches features of sign, fingerspelling and builds in a very visual way that Deaf people teach as well as uses ASL grammar which, as a hearing person has been the biggest learning curve since the structure is different and using this app helps to demonstrate that and break it down in an interactive way. This is learning a second language, it doesn’t follow English grammatical rules, so if you become frustrated, yes, you’re learning a different language not just a visual version of What you speak. Looking through the upcoming courses and the concepts that this app will teach me in the future, I am excited to use this app as a support as I continue to interact with my local community and develop my ability to effectively communicate with them. Additionally, the dictionary tool is absolutely amazing and I love looking up a word I haven’t gotten to that I don’t already know. Yes, over the year it may feel pricey to some, but remember, you are compensating paying real people and this will help you to engage with real people in the world. The perspective of that can shift that this really is pretty small relative to the impact you can have on others..Version: 2.8.4
Not just ASL. Deaf culture, too!I almost never take the time to write reviews, but this app is fabulous. I am on a 43 day streak, and I am so delighted with my progress. For context, I spent some time in deaf circles as a child, more than 40 years ago, but have had almost no ASL practice since then. In just a few entertaining minutes a day, this app has helped me regain everything I once knew and then some. It starts out deceptively easy, but has a phenomenal depth of both ASL (including grammar!) and Deaf culture. I am so glad that I got a year subscription. I often do a lesson first thing in the morning, but if I forget, it gently reminds me not to break my streak come afternoon. My progress has been such that, last weekend, I felt confident enough to show up at a deaf gathering in my town. I really like that there is no sound and that the teachers are deaf themselves. This forces me to really work on understanding sign language, rather than lipreading or depending on speech or captions. My only suggestion would be to add a feedback button. There are occasional text errors which could easily be pointed out if there was a forum to do so. overall, highly highly highly recommend this app. I’m having a blast with it!.Version: 3.0.2
Awesome appI don’t normally write reviews but I needed to for this. I found out about this because a lot of deaf creators I follow have been sponsored by/recommended this app. I took an asl class at my local community college but I had to wait over the summer to continue and wasn’t able to be conversational with what I had learned, so I lost a lot. I decided to try out this app so I wouldn’t have forced breaks and I LOVE it. I learned more useful stuff in the first two days of using the app (like, before I even started the 7 day free trial) than I learned the entire semester of the class. I’ve been using it for about 2 weeks now and I think I’d be able to sign a little with someone else. I also like that instead of just showing you the signs, and moving on, it quizzes you on them and forces you to use it. That was my problem with the ASL app, it never quizzed me so I would lose stuff quickly. My only two criticisms I’ve seen so far is I wish it would actually record you signing sometimes to make sure you’re signing correctly, but I can see how that would be hard to do on an app. The other one is when it quizzes you on the “thank you” sign and asks you to type what it’s saying, it only accepts “thanks” as correct and not “thank you”. It throws me off, especially because the person signing in that video seems to be mouthing “thank you” and not “thanks”. Other than those small criticisms though, I love this app. I’m hoping to try to find some asl in person events/hang outs soon so I can practice in an actual setting. I highly recommend this app..Version: 3.2.0
Great appOverall I love this app. I feel like most of the signers are very clear and easy to follow and understand. A few sign differently and that’s tricky but I feel that it’s helpful to have variety to help prepare you more for the real world. Their testing isn’t great. I’ve written the wrong word but it was close to the spelling of the correct word, even if they aren’t even remotely related, and I got it correct. I guess the app took it as a misspelling? Other times I’ve added “ing” or put tummy instead of belly and I get it wrong. If there are multiple answers and you miss one, you get it completely wrong. These things aren’t a big deal. But it can be a little annoying when you have to take the test again for little things like this. Also, the tests are so repetitive! I think it’s smart to use the same words over and over to really pound them in, but when the same person is saying the same exact phrase over and over I stop watching and just tap out what they’re saying. I don’t have to try at that point. It takes away from my learning. Other than the testing being so-so I do feel like I’m learning to recognize signs. I wish there was a way for me to practice them myself through the app like other language learning apps, but I have no idea how they could facilitate that. This is the best ASL app I’ve found and I’ve enjoyed using it overall!.Version: 3.2.1
I don’t have 18$ to give you every monthWhen I got this app I was so excited to learn ASL. I did the first lesson then came back on the app just to see that it wasn’t completed. I tried to complete it but it told me to start the free trial. I declined the offer but then shortly realized that there was nothing else for me to do if I didn’t start the free trial. Somebody who is deaf, non verbal, or has a friend that is deaf etc. might need to learn ASL without going to an in person class. The first lesson only gave you words like hello, welcome, how, me, you, and fine. I wanted to be able to know and learn ASL, but to do that you have to start a free trial. not everybody is able to pay $18 a month for an app. I wanted to learn ASL and join the ASL community but now I can’t do that because i don’t have $18 to give you every month. I still gave this app 3 stars because if someone were to go premium and continue with the lessons the lessons are very easy to understand and show you how to learn the word very well even including a slow down button if they are signing to fast. But I am still mad because I would like to have a conversation in ASL which they give you if you continue the app with premium. In all the app would be lovely if it didn’t have that outstanding price you would have to pay before you could even complete the first lesson. Thank you for reading my review and I hope this helps with your decision of buying this app or not. 😊😊.Version: 3.1.3
Wonderful but...This is a fantastic app. I found it easy to use and the spaced repetition is excellent. The vocabulary and conversations felt (for the most part) useful and appropriate for the real world. One complaint was the end of section reviews. They were so repetitive I didn't even have to see the word/phrase before answering because they showed the same one so many times. Also there were times I finished the reviews and there was an error forcing me to retake them. I just stopped doing those altogether. But that didn't matter too much and didn't affect the learning process. My bigger issue was the pricing structure. I 100% support paying for this app and even paid for a full year. It was (with caveat) absolutely worth the ~$100 for a year. BUT that should have been a one-time, for life price. I finished the entire series in about 6 months and the app hasn't added any new lessons since I bought it. There wasn't any point in renewing to pay another $100 yearly (or a monthly) fee to repeat the same material, but now I don't have access the the lessons I already took. That's really frustrating and disappointing. Again, I am not complaining about paying - an app like this shouldn't be free. But continuing to pay without new content is problematic and not worth it. I'm sorry I can't keep using this app as I really loved it..Version: 3.1.5
Love this app!I really wish there was a way for me to flag signs that I need more practice on. The app itself does have a progress bar that tells you signs you need work on, but I think it is a bit too lenient sometimes and I wish I could highlight signs that I don’t feel confident about. Especially since there’s some signs that I’ve guessed on and managed to get right, so the app won’t register it as a sign I’ve struggled with.. it also seems like it takes 3-4 times in a row of getting a sign wrong for the app to put it in the “Needs more practice” section. I’m sure some people love that it gives you multiple chances, but I’m the type of person who wants to have every mistake noted so I can study it, even if it was a mistake. I do really genuinely love the app though, I think it is so awesome. I have been wanting to learn sign language for a long time but didn’t know where to start. This has been a fun and easy way to learn. I’ve even got my boyfriend to start learning with me so I have somebody to practice with! It feels really good knowing I can do my part in helping the community be more accessible. :-).Version: 3.2.1
Great!Everything is awesome about this, I have just started this app and it is already amazing at using. I have Doulingo and this is almost and exact replica of Duolingo but for sign language. That is not a bad thing at all! The ONLY down side of this app that I have experienced so far is it is a bit easy. Not because I have already learned some ASL already but it is because it gives obvious hints that doesn’t help someone learn. The “obvious hints “ that I am talking about would be that it asks me what sign is a certain word and it has two options, those options say what the word that sign is if that makes any sense. There is one thing that I THINK is something wrong is there is a mirroring button that I was expecting it to have a camera and make me do that sign and it would recognize what I am doing. It doesn’t have that. It does however have the mirror button and it does have the camera, but it doesn’t do anything besides show you yourself, nothing else, to me why even have the button. Everything else I love about this app and I don’t even think that you need the mirror thingy but I was expecting it because I was sure I saw it in an ad I saw. All I have to say is that. Thank you for reading my review.🤠.Version: 3.0.2
Amazing learning tool, but I don’t support harmful generative AII used this app as much as I could for free, and it is honestly an incredible ASL learning tool. I’ve never learned sign faster! I would have subscribed to continue lessons in a heartbeat if it weren’t for the use of generative AI in this app. I think using AI with the camera to make sure you are signing correctly was a clever implementation that I have much less problem with, but it appears that this app uses AI graphics as well. Noticing this has disappointed me, partly because the devs skipped out on hiring an artist, partly because AI-generated images steal from real artists, and largely because of the environmental impact of generative AI. Furthermore, the use of AI in lieu of hiring a graphics artist makes me worry whether the devs cut other corners with AI in this app’s development. AI is not reliable for education, and particularly unreliable in learning about a human culture. My concern with the AI use in this app is a large one, and does completely put me off the app (I will be deleting it after submitting this review), however I have left a 4 star review because the concept for this app is a great one, and it helped me a lot in the few days I did use it. If, down the line, the app was refined and generative AI was no longer a part of its interface or graphic design, I would definitely return and even pay the subscription fee. If the devs stand by their use of AI and truly don’t believe they could make this app without it, however, then it just isn’t for me. I encourage anyone reading this review to research the environmental impact of generative AI and determine for yourself whether or not you think that impact is worth it..Version: 5.0.7

Worth the subscription costAfter a lot of research and second guessing I finally decided to pay for the subscription to this app and, now that I am almost finished with the first section of lessons, I can say that it was worth every penny. I was hesitant because I wanted to make sure the ASL resources I was learning from were accurate and not a scam to profit off interest of ASL without respecting the history of it (especially with apps like Duolingo using AI and insulting language learning process). I really feel like the lessons and setup with Lingvano is fantastic and was especially blown away with the fingerspelling training, which is in beta but works really well. The lessons make me excited and motivated to learn and even just having access to the dictionary to lookup new signs is wonderful. The videos and images make everything very clear and I love the addition of the camera feature to look at yourself when you sign to see if you match the actor/teacher. Overall just very thrilled with everything so far as a great start to learning ASL fundamentals!.Version: 5.0.7
Fantastic! With workaroundI figured out force quitting before finishing the second practice session of the day gets me unlimited practice, so five stars! Previous review: I’ve been using this for a few weeks. I love the video lessons, the dialogue I can watch, and the finger spelling camera that can see if I’m doing it right and practicing spelling is fantastic. So why only three stars? I’m paying for an app that only lets me practice vocabulary twice a day, and only ten words at a time, for a total of twenty words a day. As my vocabulary expands this is NOTHING. It’s very frustrating. It’s a little challenging at times that the video is only head on, so it’s hard to always get the full motions and shapes correctly, but that is understandable. I do like that I can click on vocabulary, then progress, then see my words. It’s a little frustrating that I have to get the exact translation (little bit vs a little) to get credit but again that’s understandable. If they change the number of practice sessions to at least ten, they’ll get a five star rating.Version: 5.0.7
Incredible app, I’m learning so much faster than I expected. This app is amazing and has somehow tricked my brain (a brain which previously struggled so much with languages, I thought I just wasn’t wired for it) into learning the basics of ASL far more quickly than I would have imagined. The daily lessons are short, digestible, and repeat themselves in a way that I guess helps ingrain them into your core- because suddenly it flows and feels easy. Which has *never* been the case with me and languages…I had always failed, until now. It doesn’t even feel like homework, I get excited when I have 5 min to open up the app and learn a few new signs! My only input would be I hope they expand the dictionary section one day to include even more words, as now and then I’ll just be curious as to how to sign a random word like ‘thunder’ and it’s not included, so I just have to google it elsewhere. But, it’s still a very vast dictionary with accompanying videos for it all. If you’re looking for the best ASL app out there, go for this one, it’s really solid..Version: 4.1.1
Wow!I feel like I’m flying through these lessons and learning so fast. The lessons are great. I decided to try learning ASL for 20 min a day and on day 1 I spent 4 hours and didn’t want to stop. I love the variety of teachers so your brain has to learn how to recognize diff vocab being signed by different people. Just like speaking English the person communicating has subtle variances so practicing with many teachers has been helpful for me. My only feedback is that in the earlier lessons the assessment answer options include vocab you haven’t learned making the answer too obvious without having to really know what the question is. I try to avoid even looking at the question or answer until I’ve translated all the options so I make sure I’m really learning. I am getting further along and I see the answers choices and questions are getting better at assessing comprehension. If you’re thinking about this app but not really sure - definitely try it!.Version: 5.1.1
Great Learning Behind a PaywallFirst off, the app itself is great. The teaching style is wonderful, it includes variations of signs, and direct translations (which personally helps me understand the grammar better). It reminded me of Memrise and I was excited to use it as a supportive study resource while taking my ASL class this semester. That idea was quickly shattered though. Unlike Memrise, you cannot go past a point in lessons for free. It would be nice to have the same setup where the paid version gave you better more customized ways to study while everyone is allowed to go through the lessons free. It's already a problem that ASL isn't taught in schools by default so deaf people are excluded in so many of our lives. Why keep that behind a paywall for people who are trying to fix that? On top of that, the payment options are wayyy too expensive. It's the same as the overpriced streaming services. I got a whole year of Memrise for $30, with this app that's not even two months. If anything changes let me know because I would love to use this app, but until then most of my generation is struggling to even pay rent..Version: 3.1.5
Seemed great but now I’m just disappointedI was super excited to start learning and was really enjoying the first lesson only to make it most of the way through and not be able to continue unless I pay $18 a month. That’s way too expensive for an app, I don’t even pay that much for any of my streaming services. Even though I am disappointed with this, still giving 3 stars because it does have a lot of pros, The app was very easy to navigate and I was able to get learning right away. The lesson (the short amount that I got to do anyways) was very thorough and helpful, showing different ways something can be signed, and going over it multiple times in different forms such as, multiple choice, matching, etc. to help you remember. It also has an option to slow down the signing if it’s too fast for you to understand which I think is great for beginners like myself and definitely helps. So overall, it really is a great app, they just want way too much and don’t even give you a full lesson before they want you to start paying. Still debating if it’s worth the money or not..Version: 3.0.5
Good but could be betterI am enjoying using Lingvano. I am on day 237 streak with this app. I also meet with a group, led by an interpreter, and are working thru the ABCs of ASL textbook. The text is dated but the leader helps with that but there are definitely differences with signs in this app. I wish the app allowed for iPad use with larger videos. Some hand shapes are hard to understand and are not described. I end up having to use other apps to learn the sign, though it is sometimes different. I wish the dictionary was available to jump into within the lesson to check on some signs used in the dialogues. There are a few frustrations, for example: I typed purse when the app only accepted handbag for the sign. The question of which video was the sign for repeat and the two choices were the signs repeat and again which the app stated earlier that they were the same sign. I had to squint and study to see if the lips were any different. My eyes could not tell do I guessed. Overall it is a good app and I am learning quite a bit. Thank you.Version: 4.3.6
Sign LanguageThe first ever time I saw someone sign was in elementary school and I was fascinated by sign language. I never perused sign so much until I was in my late 20s. I had a daughter and my wife and I taught our daughter baby sign language. She is 3 and a half, currently and can hear and speak but she still uses the baby sign language her mom and I taught her. It’s absolutely amazing. During the first 3 1/2 years other than the baby sign language I never continued to learn more sign language. Until now. I have only had this app for 2 days now. I took the first few things I had learnt in this app and the next day I was telling my coworkers all about this app and how it truly works. This app helps in so many ways. You are able to focus on your hands. The movement. Being able to understand. It’s pure beauty. If there is ever any doubt in your mind about wanting to learn something new, I highly recommend giving it a shot. You won’t regret it!.Version: 3.0.2
ExcellentI downloaded this app over a year ago, after months of piecing together bits of ASL from other sources. First I did the free chapter (multiple times- until I couldn’t possibly get any of them wrong), then I decided to save up for a 1 year subscription. I wanted to learn this language so badly and I’m just so grateful that this app exists at all! I honestly haven’t found anything else like it. During that year, I completed the entire course. After I completed it is when I realized it has a vocabulary section!🤦🏼♀️ I had lost my job and couldn’t get another year subscription, but lucky for me, the vocab part is free! I don’t know how much of the course you have to complete to unlock it, or if you can use if before doing a single chapter, I have no idea. All I know is that I paid for the course, completed it, and now I can continue to use the study materials. I have a 489 day streak that I don’t intend to break any time soon!!.Version: 4.1.3
Good so far!I'm usually very wary of subscription-based learning apps with limited free access, but knowing that my money is going to a company that uses ad-free and user-friendly education is nice. i'm definitely picking up on everything really well, and the "star collecting" system for reviewing what you've learned is great for repetition! additionally, i like the use of different teachers. as a disabled person, i appreciate when actual Deaf teachers get a platform (and from what i know from the Deaf community, it is best to learn from deaf/hoh individuals when possible). another benefit to the different teachers is seeing how the same signs are expressed differently between different people. i missed one question because one teacher's eyebrows don't raise as high as the others, and when i noticed, i was able to redo the question correctly! i've always wanted to learn ASL, and i plan on sticking with this for now :).Version: 4.1.1
Premium?Giving three stars because I think this is a great app, or has to potential to be. While I can agree it is easy to use/navigate, and good beginner friendly lessons. Why is there a premium? I consider ASL a staple in communication. While I’ve personally taken a few years of ASL, I’m by no means fluent. I wanted to use this app to become as fluent as possible for my job, and not for the money as I would have to be certified, but because no one else in my department knows ASL. Therefore, would consider this extremely important. If people truly cared about hearing individuals (or others like nonverbal or recently deaf) learning ASL, it would be free. I’m somewhat familiar with the deaf community and they typically love when hearing people know sign language. So why make us pay $18 a month for it? I do have free ASL resources in my area, but that requires me going out after long days at work. And what about people who don’t have those resources? Why make something so important so expensive? $18 is a meal on the table, a half a tank of gas, it helps with bills..Version: 3.1.0
Exactly what I wanted! For years I’ve been hoping to find an app that’s basically “Duolingo but for sign language”, and until this one, nothing I downloaded quite worked that way. This does. I have other useful reference and dictionary apps, but this one has features that make it really conducive to ongoing learning: bite-sized, pre-made lessons in order so you always know where to start; a clear path to follow; the instant gratification of having your accuracy checked (and a fun little mascot to cheer you on); and of course daily reminders to keep your streak alive. It’s also very helpful to have the different types of exercises built in. It’s not all just repetition and rote, but a mixture of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, “choose the correct sign for this scenario”, etc., so it’s good reinforcement and probably a good match for multiple learning styles. Another standout feature I’m really enjoying is the extra context and info built into many of the lessons, like how to incorporate facial expressions or modify a sign for nuanced meaning, or even side-by-side videos of different people signing the same thing to demonstrate individual variations. All that is great practice for real-world communication. Finally, knowing all the teachers are deaf is great to know I’m getting taught by reliable sources, and that my money for the subscription is going back into the community I’m hoping to become a part of. Totally worth the purchase! I’m so excited to finally get serious about learning ASL after years of wanting to and not having an affordable or convenient way that worked for me..Version: 3.1.0
It’s alright..I love the app, although it definitely has room for improvements. First, enough with the premium! If your deaf and broke, your gonna have to learn sign language some how. People need to learn and I think the premium is making thing limited especially for people that need it! If you don’t want to get rid of premium that’s fine, but at least put the price down a notch. Not even some of the most popular apps are that expensive. If I can’t remember how to sign “How”, I would have to go all the way back to one of the lessons and see a bunch of stuff that I’ve already mastered. It’s really annoying that I can’t just use the dictionary, or do some other lessons. Not everyone is rich and has money to pay for premium. I feel bad for the people that actually need the help. Overall, though, the app is great with loads of lessons (even for people that don’t have premium). Although learning some lessons are really quick it still is very helpful..Version: 2.4.1
Met and exceeded my expectationsEveryone will have their own opinion on this, but I would like to share mine. I used to be fluent in ASL, but lost much of it over the years. Having several family members that are deaf, as well as a nonverbal child, I decided to re-teach myself. I did a lot of research on my part, and while there are many great apps to help you learn, I have found that this one is the best in many areas. I do have one suggestion for the app itself. As we go through lessons, and click on correct responses, I believe the buttons and taps should be interactive. When we answer and check our responses, if they are correct, in addition with response, turning green, the phone should vibrate once. If it’s negative, vibrates twice. I think that could greatly assist other users and would be a great addition, just like slow-down turtle option..Version: 4.0.2
Very Well Thought OutThis is the best app I’ve ever tried for learning a language. I appreciate every detail they’ve put into it. The instructors all have their own signing speed and style so it’s a good way to learn recognizing the signs in different contexts. I rarely feel like subscriptions are worth it for me but this has been a great investment. As I’m beginning unit two I’m already looking for spaces to practice and build confidence and I’ve connected with people with just my effort to actively try. I think I have a streak of 40 something days at this point and even a quick 5 minutes a day definitely makes a difference. My only feedback, which I’m not sure if possible, would be dialogue practice with phrases from previous chapters and units you’ve completed. I really appreciate the breakdown of practice for different overarching foundations..Version: 5.0.1
Best ASL app availableThis app is the single best ASL app I’ve found. From the videos being easy to follow, the actual grammar lessons instead of just rattling off words, the options to slow down videos and split screen the camera so you can follow along. The dictionary option is great when you need to brush up on a few words or when you’re translating with someone real time and the vocab trainer is great for daily use to make sure you’re training in all the material. Not to mention that Mano is adorable and the reminders and feedback it gives you are actually encouraging instead of slightly menacing (looking at that creepy green owl we’ve all tried) premium is a thing to unlock all of the content but honestly I don’t even think about it just bc of how worth it it is. I never subscribe to app things but this such a great value that it’s really no question.Version: 3.0.1
Fantastic ASL App!I have tried for years to learn ASL but through a combination of my own motivation problems and other apps not having a great interface/lesson plans, it always seemed unachievable. But Lingvano has totally changed that for me! I’ve learned more ASL (signs, grammar, and even culture) in less than a month than I ever have trying to learn anywhere else. The interface is easy to navigate and utilize. The lesson plan is actually conducive to learning everything in a way that is easy to grasp. Plus the additional Trainers that you can use to practice words, spellings, and numbers you’ve already gone over is great! I would also like to add that I LOVE that just working in the Trainer section will still count to keeping your learning streak going- day 27 and counting! Now circling back to how this app has helped with my own motivation problems. The developers of this app have essentially gamified learning ASL by adding in different achievements, trophies, and fun facts about the Deaf community that you can earn along the way. They also have Milestone sections throughout the main lesson plan where you can earn stars to advance to the next chapter. All of this has combined to finally give me something I look forward to doing everyday- multiple times a day, in fact. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out the fact that this app was built and taught, mostly if not completely, by deaf/hard of hearing people. Knowing I’m learning the language from the community it was designed for is so reassuring! I highly recommend using this app if you’re wanting to learn! As someone who hates paying for apps, this one is definitely worth the money!.Version: 4.1.0
I like it but room for improvementI do like this app, but I think there is so much room for growth. The videos are a really great way to learn (although they do stick at times, even though our internet is extremely fast.) And I love the option to slow down the videos. All that is helpful. I do think the curriculum moves VERY fast. Things only get repeated through the module and by the next one you don’t revisit the content anymore, just learn a lot of new words. Since the modules are short and done in a few minutes, it’s just a few minutes of practice before the next batch of new words is introduced. I also wish it were an option to revisit mistakes to make sure they’ve been learned from. I really love the way Duolingo approaches teaching (Repetitions, presenting the same information different ways, gamifying the experience…) I really wish they would teach ASL. By comparison this app feels bare for sure..Version: 2.2.3
Great & Fun!I am a hairstylist and I realized that there is an entire community out there that probably can’t or won’t get their hair done because they can’t have someone come to interpret for them, or maybe they feel they might be judged or fear, because writing things down for communication goes so far. I have been using the app for 5 days now and I have learned so much! I am so excited to get closer to being able to converse with the deaf/hard of hearing community. Overall, the app runs great and it’s clear where everything is and what to do. the ONLY issue I have is sometimes, the instructors don’t sign the same, and I end up getting confused. I know the letter N has the thumb between the pinky and ring, but another instructor just puts their two fingers down, so I was confused and ended up getting things wrong..Version: 3.1.1
It’s awesome but..I really like this app but I have big beef with premium. Things like the review at the end of modules would make a bit of sense to need premium for, but all I can do without paying is the first module NOT including the review at the end. I’m neurodivergent and can sometimes go nonverbal. What if I don’t have a pen and paper or an electronic device to communicate?? Sometimes I can’t force myself to speak which means I’ll have no way to communicate my needs. And what about those born deaf or went deaf before they learned a good amount of spoken words?? What about mute people?? I and many others with these or similar problems may not have a good support system or the money to take ASL classes or pay for fancy apps. This app was really good! It explained stuff and had multiple methods of teaching. But what’s the point of having it if it ain't accessible to as many as possible?? This seems like exploitation if I’m being honest and that’s not a good look. Please change this..Version: 2.6.8
DisappointingI’m a high schooler who wanted to learn asl as a basic skill before applying to a new job where I’d work with kids and I worried there could potentially be deaf kids since I encountered deaf people for the first time at my old job. I was really excited but I got through all the available material within an hour before I was stopped by a paywall. Again I’m a high school student and currently unemployed and I absolutely would’ve tapped into my savings for this but I just can’t afford $18 monthly payments. I think it’s unfortunate after seeing how tiring it is for deaf people to communicate with hearing people who’ve never considered learning to sign because it didn’t affect them and I’m sure many would be willing if it was more accessible but I don’t think prices that high are helpful to hearing people willing to learn or deaf people who struggle daily communicating with people who can’t sign. Accessibility would help all sides so I don’t understand..Version: 3.1.9
FrustratingI was enjoying this app and learning from it, but there are a few things that became so frustrating that I cancelled my subscription. First, it’s quite hard to figure out where you left off when you return to it, so I ended up repeating things I had already learned a lot, and also sometimes discovered I was being tested on things I hadn’t learned. There’s no easy way to review quickly or look up things you’ve already learned but want a quick refresher on. Second, a few lessons the video quality for one of the 3 presenters suddenly became terrible a few lessons in. Fuzzy and with a green cast and poor contrast. Around the same time this presenter started signing about 4 times faster and I absolutely could not keep up even when I rewatched sometimes 10 times. The result was that I was guessing answers by context without actually learning the signs. (Also, and this is the least of it but still, this same presenter scowls through all her demos and I felt like she was angry at me. I loathe when people tell women to smile more but she’s full-on scowling.) The other two presenters also sometimes finger spell at an angle that made it impossible to see the letters. Finally, in multi-part dialogues, the first one or two statements get bumped off the screen of my iPad and I can’t scroll back up to rewatch them. I loved the incentive of the streaks and enjoyed learning asl, but it’s gotten to the point that I feel frustrated and stupid because I am having so much trouble seeing the signs and keeping up with the dialogues, so I cancelled my premium subscription..Version: 2.6.8
An actual DREAMI have always wanted to learn to sign. But it wasn’t offered in my school system and with my budget now, finding an in person class to pay for isn’t an option. I stumbled across this in an add. And did the first chapter because that is what is offered for free. I learned the greetings quickly and immediately dove into the free trial of o continue because I was so excited to keep going. Everything is explained so thoroughly and even if I’m slow signing right now, it’s so exciting to be able to understand what someone is signing to me. And I think it will be more than worth the monthly price until I’ve completed all the units. And it comes with three dialects to learn, so I could become multi lingual in sign. This is a true dream come true, and I’m so thankful that I found this app..Version: 2.8.3
Perfect for spacial-visual learnersI have been using Lingvano for about 4 months and am picking up ASL fairly quickly. The combination of types of questions (multiple choice, fill in the blank, write words, practice finger spelling) helps put various words in context, and there are quick tips and lessons on deaf culture, body language, and other important topics too. I now have the confidence to go to an ASL conversation group, and I even introduced myself to a deaf couple at a coffee shop recently. My whole life I have wanted to learn ASL so I can communicate with deaf and hard-of-hearing folks in my community and thanks to Lingvano, I am on the road towards fluency. The only criticism I have is I wish there were quizzes outside of the classes to practice my word bank w/o going thru individual words in dictionary one by one..Version: 5.1.9
Best learning thing everThis is the best one to ever because I get to learn ASL because it is cool and I’m just doing this for fun, but if I meet anyone that is deaf, I can locate them with this app or with a friend who wants to like you know you lose this app you can always let them know. Also whoever made this app if you’re still alive look at mine look at my review five star review, it’s just too good too good I might forget to do some lessons because I always miss out on Duolingo. I hate that thing a little bit. I love it teach me Spanish but then I when I don’t wanna learn Spanish I literally just go like I don’t wanna do do a Lego, also Duolingo is like the best thing on earth. Anything else do do lingo is just me trying to say Duolingo so make sure this app is fun good and better for kids Sia..Version: 3.1.6
Disappointed..I was so excited when I saw the ad for this app.. I have wanted to learn signing my whole life! The ad advertised this as a free app.. I downloaded it and started right away.. it was so easy and I was learning.. I could not believe all of the signs I learned in just a few days.. at the end of each lesson I was completely confident with what I learned.. I looked forward to getting on the app each day to learn a new sign.. but today.. day 8 wouldn’t let me continue unless I signed up for a free trial for another 7 days and then start paying each month.. over all it would be over $100 a year.. which might not sound like a lot to some people but I can’t afford it.. I actually thought there wasn’t going to be a catch to this one.. I was really learning and now I have to go back to nothing .. I’m so sad...Version: 3.1.9
Good, but could be betterFirst off, the price is crazy expensive and I didn’t see an option for a yearly discount which I do for Duolingo. Speaking of, unless these are owned by the same company, a lot of this app seems to be copying Duo. Again regarding price, the app is quite…ugly. The appearance and interface could use a major overhaul, as well as the logo. Branding matters and maybe if it was pleasant to look at, I could possibly justify the monthly price. The trial was so short I couldn’t even become interested in wanting to pay for it. When there are so many other free options out there, I’ll have to go elsewhere. TLDR: I did learn a few basic words in the super short trial. While I understand deaf people mouth words as they sign, I found this distracting while learning because I was just reading their lips instead of focusing on the hand movements. App design is unappealing and dated but content is decent..Version: 3.0.2
FantasticAwesome app! A bit expensive with 18 a month. Would have maybe thought 18 total. Guess it gives extra incentive to finish it quickly though. 🤷🏻♀️ We have been learning ASL for a while and knew the beginning signs that are taught. This app is allowing me to see how sentences are structured though. Which is mostly what I've been looking for. Reminds me a lot of an ASL version of Duo. Which is perfect. Thank you for creating it. We've been learning because of our ministry work and I personally feel it's my responsibility to learn ASL in general. Those that are hard of hearing can only do so much to communicate with the hearing. And they do very well- but I have it in my power to learn to communicate with them. So I should. And this app makes it very easy. Thank you..Version: 1.1
Landscape view neededI downloaded this app to my tablet so that I could prop the screen up and see the signs and then use the mirror feature more easily. I was very disappointed to learn that it has the same view as on my phone. I had really hoped that I could take advantage of the larger screen to see things more clearly, and more comfortably use the app. How am I supposed to practice using my hands if I can’t prop my screen up easily? My neck gets tired looking down at it. Other than the view limitation, however, I am loving the app! It works well for my learning style, and I am finding myself making progress quickly. I’m also remembering the signs much more easily than when I took in person classes. The repetition schedule is perfect for me!.Version: 2.8.4
Great for Visual or Repetitious learners! This app is an amazing tool for anyone to learn ASL at your own pace. It is clear, has the option to slow down or play at regular speed, you can check the dictionary for words you need to practice, it has questions and answers, fill in the blank, organize the sentence according to the signs in the video, Deaf Culture details, and that is just what I have experienced using the app for only one day. This app is a necessity for someone learning in school online but needs more structured practice that is graded so you are aware of your progress. I could go on and on but this app will not disappoint. I am paying for the year because I will need it but the teaser shows you how great this app is! Thanks so much for creating this app!.Version: 5.1.1
Great self-paced learningI love the bite-sized course sections. It is extremely easy to keep up with learning ASL when it can be done in short intervals at my own pace. In addition, the training quizzes and dictionary makes retaining skills easy and fun to do. Three things I especially like are the videos of real people signing (instead of cartoon characters or still photos), the inclusion of several different people signing (instead of just one reference person), and the dialog sections which provide good back-and-forth conversations. This ensures a real-life variety of signing that will make in-person situations easier to acclimate to. All of this uses regular, realistic conversations so the experience feels as real as is possible. Additionally, a website version of the app can also be accessed which makes home learning easy, and your learning progress syncs between the app and the website so you can pickup right where you left off on either device. For me, this app has been fun and extremely helpful. The subscription cost is perfectly reasonable, plus you get a chance to try it out for a while before you have to put any money into it..Version: 3.1.9
Great App/Unethical BillingPSA for those considering this app: I love the content of this app but I feel that the business-side of this app has been less than honest towards me. I started using this app last year to be able to communicate better with my extended family. For financial reasons I needed to put my learning on pause and attempted to cancel my subscription before its renewal. The experience of canceling my subscription has been extremely stressful and the ensuing customer support I’ve received has been shady at best. I went through the cancelation process days before the renewal, was somehow charged for a new subscription, immediately (day of) cancelled and emailed to clear things up/ensure the cancellation/be refunded, heard back from customer service 20 days later, and was told that per policy I can’t be given a refund after 20 days. Any and all attempts at polite logic were met with shifting call backs to policies I can’t find listed on their website. The only customer service rep I’ve been given access to too is insisting that I have no recourse available regardless of how unfairly and unethically the issue has been handled. Overall, this is a great app to learn ASL. However exercise extreme caution when you’re ready to cancel and watch your credit card statements..Version: 5.0.8
Worth every penny!I initially started learning ASL due to a crush…and this app has exceeded my expectations in helping me achieve conversational fluency! Over the past 7 months of daily study, my vocabulary has expanded to about 1,000 signs. I've nearly completed all the lessons and am now focusing on mastering them through the vocab trainer feature. This progress would have taken me years through traditional classes alone. While I also work with a weekly private ASL tutor who is Deaf and am considering formal classes in the future, this app has truly been a game changer for me. It has not only enhanced my communication skills but also introduced me to a vibrant community and culture within the Deaf community. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning ASL!.Version: 3.1.0
READ THISA lot of people are complaining that it is very expensive to learn using this app. the truth is, that’s the way it is, Duolingo it has ads, or you pay equal amount to remove them. ASL is a complex language and it is well worth the money if you are actually investing in learning the language properly, it costs much less than lessons so really take a moment to think about all the work that goes in to this app before you say it is too expensive..Version: 2.7.7
So Easy to Get StartedWow, thank you for making it so easy for me to get started on a goal I had shelved.Version: 5.1.4
Challenging yet FunI enjoy learning with Lingvano because it is professionally presented , challenging and I can work at my own pace. I also enjoy the challenge of keeping up the learning streak. I am motivated to continue every day..Version: 5.1.4
Love this app!Great app! I will subscribe again in the Spring. I’ve learned a lot. Highly recommend..Version: 5.0.7
U need this app!I love this app! If you wanna learn ASL this is the best app. The monthly subscription is a bit high but worth it..Version: 5.0.2
Amazing and super well doneI came from a Spanish speaking country and I’m now living in Canada trying to get use to and learn the ASL sign language and this app is making me learn so fast and so well. It’s very hard for me to put this down!! One of the best app ever created. Love my deaf community.Version: 5.2.0
Easy to learn but priceyI love this app! It’s taught me some phrases in a short amount of time but now I can’t complete the second chapter without paying. I do think it’s worth the investment but not everyone, myself included, have the privilege to afford that. That’s why I put 4 stars..Version: 4.3.8
This is awesome!Thank you to everyone who created this. I am learning sign language! I am so grateful..Version: 5.1.8
Worth The Money and TimeHonestly, the first app that I’ve seen from an insta ad that I’ve paid for, use, like, and learn from everyday. On top of teaching signs, it teaches you the important elements of ASL, and proper grammar. It provides lots of opportunity for practice and the finger spell practice has been so helpful..Version: 5.1.8
Fun like a gameThank you this is really good.Version: 5.1.6
At you’re own paceThe signs are clear and can be repeated until you have them..Version: 5.1.5
BestI love this app! I finally get to continue learning ASL when I first knew and learned a bit of sign from my old school Tevi miller it was a great and special experience that not very many people have..Version: 5.0.7
The people doing the signs are chopped as shytIt’s true..Version: 4.3.7
Great butIt’s a great app where you lurn and have fun, the problem is that I can’t pay so I was wondering if we could make an offer maybe so we can still learn but make it more open for everyone..Version: 5.0.2
Fantastic learning appI’m a visual learner and this app provides more than one way to test you for ample amount of learning styles 🤘🏼.Version: 4.3.5
Amazing! RecommendThis app really helped me to learn more sign! And the teaches are clearly explaining very well totally recommend.Version: 4.3.1
Helped me so muchI want to understand at least basic ASL so I can communicate with all I’m 13 years old and it has been flexible and slow enough to comprehend..Version: 4.2.4
Need more content!I love Lingvano! I tried learning ASL with friends during covid but we didn’t have the right learning techniques or resources. These lessons are great, but I’ve completed all the content and need more.Version: 4.3.0
The perfect sign language appSo basically, the sign language app is really fun. I was just doing it for fun, and for educational purposes, cause I was learning Spanish at the time, and I thought it was gonna be too struggling, but it was actually really easy. And now I know how to do basic sign language. I can have basic conversations with And gestures. Now it’s super fun to know different languages. Especially unusual ones. I recommend for beginners. A quick tip is to note your sign language. Just down and practice..Version: 4.2.4
Learning ASL for funI’ve dropped off because of life and still made the effort to come back WHILE suggesting to everyone when the topic comes up 👌👌👌.Version: 4.2.4
10/10It gives you videos and a mirror to see if you’re doing it correctly. as a curious teenage girl, this is very exciting for me.Version: 4.2.4
Sooo goodI love this i can now communicate with my mom and grandma.Version: 4.2.3
Cool! This is so cool! Good for understanding your friends and family (that is mute or deaf).Version: 4.2.3
Worth it.Yes, it is paid. However, the app works really well, the curriculum is well-structured, the practice modes do a good job of reviewing vocabulary already seen in previous lessons (including separate review modes for just fingerspelling or just numbers), and the Deaf teachers and others involved in putting together this app and the lessons deserve to be supported. There is also a Facebook community for users of the app, and through that connection I have attended a free webinar about Deaf vs. hearing culture (and I know others in the community have also joined in Zoom practice sessions with each other, I just haven’t done that yet). I work with a Deaf colleague and students with developmental disabilities and communication issues, and this app has been a fantastic supplement to a course I’d taken (through BRCCED, the Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf) to help me communicate better with my colleague and my students..Version: 4.2.3
Great starter lessonsI really love this app. I can’t afford to get the subscription so I have to say goodbye to it for now but I found it very easy to use and better yet ideal to learn. I really wish some more of the basic signs had been here just so I could be friendly but it’s an exceptional app. When I can afford it I will get the subscription. Still worth trying out to see if you like it. We need more equality and accessibility in the world so it doesn’t hurt to learn just in case. I forgot to say about the dictionary! Awesome resource that works if you’re doing the free version too..Version: 4.2.3
I luv thisI wish this game and or app had a creature we’re you can type a hold sentence and learn how to sign it for free and without having to unlock it..Version: 4.2.3
My ReviewI hate to say this but the app is worth the money they’re charging, because there teaching methods and strategies are interesting and helping. My son and I have fun using the app and learning who to communicate and help better learn..Version: 4.2.3
Amazing!I’ve always wanted to learn ASL but I had no idea where to start. Lingvano is easy to use and the teachers are great!.Version: 4.2.2
Suggestion for improvementLove the app. It would be awesome if I could bookmark certain sings from the dictionary. Would be even better if I could have a trainer session for practice which only took from those bookmarked signs 🤟🏼😇.Version: 4.2.2
I really like this appI’ve had this app for five days and I’ve learnt a lot I feel. I love how they explain why, how and when to use facial expressions properly. They teach you how to use the grammar properly as well which I thought I’d just have to catch onto so I’m glad they explain it.Version: 4.2.2
No costI don’t know why people are saying that the app sucks or costs money. I am using it perfectly well..Version: 4.2.2
Language appLove that I can learn at my own pace and go back if I need to I quite enjoy this app!.Version: 4.2.2
Best ASL AppIf you’re looking for a comprehensive program, look no further. Each lesson builds upon the last. I’ve been using it for two weeks and I’m so impressed how much I’ve learned. There are thousands of high quality videos to help you learn. I appreciate the dictionary and the trainer. For those who feel this should be free, you get what you pay for and if you’re serious about learning ASL, this app is worth every penny. If not, there are other free apps and YouTube. I highly recommend this app..Version: 4.2.0
Easy to understand lessonsThese lessons are affective and simple to understand. I was nervous to learn but feel confident after using this app! Thank you 💖.Version: 4.1.3
Wonderful appI see a lot of comments about this app being too expensive or that it should be free. There are no ads on this app which is wonderful because you can just focus on signing so naturally you have to pay for it. I have learned so much already and I love that there is further information on grammar and it isn’t just a memorization app. I have been on other apps where they just teach you the signs but this one shows you how to have conversations and understand how to sign a sentence without all the extra words that we speak. When you pay for the year and break it down per month it truly is not expensive. Cook at home twice instead of going out for dinner and you’ve paid for a year of this app. Way cheaper than a tutor or paying for a school course. Highly recommend this app!.Version: 4.1.3
ExcellentI have a hard of hearing 3yr old daughter, and I have a learning disability, this app has made signing very easy to learn with whatever time I have available. I had a real deaf in-person teacher before this and it’s accurate to what she was teaching me too.Version: 4.1.1
❤️😁I really like this app it’s super easy to use and very helpful.Version: 4.1.1
It would be more bénéficias if there were video interactions between learners online or create learnYou can create learners groups according to their time zone and a day in a week for online video interactions.Version: 4.1.1
