NYT Crossplay: Play and Spell Positive Reviews
Iconic, Must have for NYT Games as well as Word Games. The interface, gameplay, clean graphics, the ability to save my progress to Apple ID with my NYT account, the whole core mechanics of this game is incredible. It is so addicting placing words and adding friends and seeing everyone’s statistics in each profile and watching my own stats in my profile rack up! Very smooth and crisp! The ads also isn’t an issue with NYT games ads only them only being 5 seconds feels endless and seamless between some games, they also don’t pop up after every turn that some other word games have as an issue. This is a simple clean cut word game where there isn’t any currency or other type of power up’s to help with words/ having the game find them/place them for you, this is purely and entirely your own mind and tiles! Also this game makes it unique where it feels fresh and different from say scrabble or words with friends making this game even better! Please keep this going forever with updates! The best game on the Apple Store that I have played in a long time! A must have for word games on your phone. Again, Better than other leading ones in the same category!.Version: 2.0.0
Total love, and some thoughts!Thoroughly enjoying the game, and I’m playing daily with friends and family members. I would ask that you make the hard level of the computer challenge game, harder, and that you consider making the letters on your board at the end at the deduct from your score. I would also love some sort of an information bit about why the dictionary as you use are used. I’ve been playing Scrabble forever, and it’s interesting to see how word use and spellings have changed over the decades, I would also love to understand how the dictionaries are used for this game were selected. Thank you so much for making an amazing game!.Version: 2.8.0
Okay game, but a few problems …Game is okay fun. I prefer to play anonymously, as I don’t really want to do the game with friends. Main problems are (1) the opposing player has basically up to seven days to play. So boring to play someone who plays only once a day. I wish they would change the rule, or at least divide the players into categories where some games go faster; (2) the fun of the Scrabble challenge is non-existent — I guess in this internet day and age, there’s no other option; (3) the computer “hard” game programming is really dumb — doesn’t use good strategy at all; and (4) the way the game ends is weird — seems like once a player draws the final tiles, that means the opposing player has one more turn, and then the “last tile drawer” player gets the last play, which leads to weird and unfair results..Version: 2.8.1
It’s basically ScrabbleI really enjoy it, the only reason why I would not give it. Five stars is because you have to find someone alive to play with. And because you’re playing with another person, you do not know half of the time, you’re waiting on their timeline. So if you wanted to sit there and play for the next hour, you’d have to depend on someone else to play with it does not have a auto bot player. Once you do find someone to play with you it’s an enjoyable game if you’d like the game of Scrabble.Version: 2.0.0
Cross-Bot suddenly needs a subscription?I like this game a lot and have been playing pretty much since it came out. Besides the dictionary sometimes having odd or incomplete definitions, I had no problems with the game experience at all. I loved using the Cross-Bot feature to see the strength of my moves, potential better moves I could've made, and the math behind it all. That feature had always been in the game, which was completely free up until a few weeks ago when suddenly Cross-Bot required a NYT subscription. This was incredibly disappointing, and it's the reason I don't play any other NYT games. Why make a feature paid that was always free to use? It just comes off as money hungry. Would've been a five star review if not for that..Version: 2.16.0
Needs workThe endgame is bizarre where you’re forced into a final turn as soon as you have <7 tiles(? I think?). I would much prefer to play out the game until one of us finishes their tiles. It makes the endgame more exciting and deepens the strategy on which tiles you’re holding at the end. Also need a setting to remove/reduce animations. Would be helpful to see a scoring chart. I don’t need an onboarding flow to tell me how to play I just need to understand the scoring. Bingos aren’t +50 (40?) and letters all have different values from scrabble, which is fine but we need a place to learn what’s what. I love NYT games because they are the antithesis of the over-animated, over-colorful, ad-infested brain rot that are most mobile games including scrabble go. Just needs a few tweaks!.Version: 2.6.0
Fun game but randomizer is badThe layout and interface of the game is for the most part good, it does glitch from time to time. The thing that really turns me off is that the randomizer is not good. Very often you will have games where you will consistently draw a heavy amount of vowels (I’m talking 3 I’s 2 A’s, 1 U, and a consonant). Then the other player just has all consonants or a mix. Other times I’m at a huge advantage and there’s no challenge. The probability of drawing certain letters just doesn’t appear the same as playing in person as the computer will tip the game to one side or the other in regard to “unlucky tiles” and if you’re looking for more of a realistic game vibe then you will get frustrated..Version: 2.15.0
Endgame is so so badThis is a great app to play Scrabble with, but the way the endgame works on this app is so much worse than in normal Scrabble. I’ve lost so many close games because I have to bingo for points when there’s only 10 or so tiles left in the bag, which means if my opponent plays more than two tiles the bag empties and they get an extra turn. And I don’t know what I’m supposed to do in that situation, just not play a bingo for way less points so I have a better chance of getting the last turn? That is silly. If you couldn’t tell I am writing this while very angry about losing like that. Please please lawyer up or something and change it to the normal Scrabble rules 🙏.Version: 2.1.1
Ridiculous WordsThis is such a great app in concept, but it has one major flaw that has made it a lot less fun than it could be. When you’re entering a word, it won’t highlight the word in green until it’s a real word. Gone is the element of Scrabble where someone can misspell a word or write something that isn’t a word and then be challenged. This difference means that people can just throw out random letters until they light up green, and then play it as their turn even though they never even knew that word existed. Also, the app seems to allow you to play words that are not even in the Merriam-Webster dictionary..Version: 2.14.0
Love this gameFabulous game. I love that you can make your play whenever is convenient. No game clock, just work on your move when you have time. Must play game for me. I would suggest that the Play button is swapped with the text box button. I have on multiple occasions accidentally hit this. Sometimes there is a word on the board and it take that as my move. This has happened to other players too. Too easy to inadvertently hit it when moving tiles at the bottom of the board..Version: 2.4.0
Play button errorsI enjoy the game, but constantly have issues with myself and friends accidentally hitting the play button. It’s so large and right next to the recall button which is much smaller. It’s very easy to mistakenly hit the play button instead of recall. Move the play button to the top of the screen or have a confirm play pop up added in to avoid accidentally presses of the play button please!!! Also, the game should subtract left over tiles from your total at the end… not sure why it doesn’t do this..Version: 2.14.0
Thank youHello. Huge fan of all things word game related here. Thank you for bringing us a new scrabble platform. I have a few suggestions. Firstly, the online matching has not been able to match me with anyone. I’m sure you’re aware of that and our trusted friends at NYT are already working out the kinks so I won’t waste my breath. Secondly, I have been playing the computer matches, I appreciate the option to do so. However, I have beat the computer every time. Please make it harder. Thank you again..Version: 2.0.0
Future UpdatesI’m really enjoying the game. I play with several friends and even some random matches. Some of the words that are accepted are different from words that are accepted in traditional Scrabble. Some words I try to look up and see their meaning but I can’t locate them in a Miriam Webster dictionary. In the future, I think it would be nice if the game allowed you to click of a word that has been placed and it will open up a definition window. Thanks again for the fun game..Version: 2.5.0
Love this game! This is so much better than “that other game” that we’ve probably all played. It has similar features, but the Crossplay dictionary is an actual dictionary with real words and none of those silly accidental ones that the other game allowed. I really enjoy playing every day, both with my sisters and random players. I would like to suggest one additional feature, and that is a pass and play feature so that I can play with my grandson..Version: 2.4.0
Kenna BreeThought this would be great to have a new game and one that is accessible thru this app and would likely attract a more skilled group than the usual words with friends bunch. But honestly, it isn’t great. I’ve tried repeatedly to be matched with a player and most of the time the player has reached their max number of games for the day and when I have been matched with another player they never play. I’ve grown bored of beating the hard level of the computer after a dozen or so games. There’s not a real challenge here in its current state..Version: 2.1.1
One problemThis is a perfectly fine scrabble clone. Nothing new in terms of gameplay but the Crossplay Bot game analysis is definitely a nice feature. My big problem is how easy it is to accidentally click the “Play” button prematurely. I’ve spent a long time playing with different word options and then, poof, my turn is over because I hit Play when trying to scroll the board or shuffle my pieces. Moving that button or having an “Play xxxx for xx points?” verification pop-up would be a nice way to prevent fat-finger tragedies..Version: 2.13.1
Great Game ! (5⭐️)one suggestion to its designersFive star game! 👍. My only suggestion to the designers is a minor one, and that is that if you’re in the middle of a Crossplay match — and only one match — then when you open the app, it should immediately open to that match in progress to save you that extra step of always having to relaunch the match every time you reopen Crossplay after waiting God knows how long for your opponent to make their move. Thx..Version: 2.0.0
Sharpen the Blade Daily★★★★★ 5 Stars I play Crossplay every single day. Not casually. Not to pass time. I play it because it sharpens the blade. Crossplay hits the sweet spot between vocabulary, pattern recognition, and strategy. It’s not just about knowing words — it’s about board vision, risk tolerance, timing, and restraint. There’s a chess element to it. A little poker. A little Scrabble blood sport. From an intellectual standpoint, it’s clean. No fluff. Just decisions. Do I open the lane? Do I hold the S? Do I bait the triple? Every move has downstream consequences. That’s what makes it satisfying. It rewards discipline. Punishes sloppiness. And when you land a tight, high-value play that locks the board down? That’s earned dopamine. If you like word games that respect your brain — and don’t treat you like you need confetti every 12 seconds — Crossplay delivers. Daily mental reps. No wasted motion..Version: 2.5.0
Not scrabble so it has some quirks1. The dictionary sure is strange. Everyone is used to the standard 2 letter words, but they’ve added a peck of new ones, “ae” comes to mind. As well as a host of archaic words and spellings. It makes the incentives different. 2. Making friends is hard. It was almost impossible to get a game going with my son because it was so hard to confirm friendship. It’s also hard to communicate with stranger players. No one uses chat, and no one wants to be Crossplay friends evidently. 3. The mechanics are fine. Playing the bots is fine. The different board layout is fine..Version: 2.9.0
Fun game but …This has been a fun game with a few flaws. Despite bring quite similar to Scrabble, it has a few frustrating rules. When playing an opponent who is pretty evenly matched with me, the winner usually comes down to whomever has the last turn. When that happens , a win doesn’t really feel like a win. I could give it 5 stars if the game allowed me to try to use up my letters to go out, and gave whomever went out first the bonus points from the opponent. Still, it’s been a great way to be in touch with my family who lives far away..Version: 2.10.0
One suggestion for improvementReally enjoying the game. I only play with my sister, and we usually have 4 to 5 games going at the same time. One suggestion to the developers: on the iPhone, is it possible to move the recall button away from the play button? I can’t tell you how many times I have accidentally hit play instead of recall and play a one or two letter word instead of the word I intended. 😂.Version: 2.13.1
Fun game, but….App is a mess. Screen is way too narrow and small. Freezes up frequently. Cannot move it around on my iPad screen and is eternally stuck way off on the side. I am deleting and reloading it in the hope of fixing this. Game is fun and I like playing the computer instead of waiting around for live players. Would like to be able to opt out of playing others as I get so many requests for a game it gets annoying. Major problem is the playing screen needs a whole redesign. I play on an IPad if that makes a difference..Version: 2.9.0
A Hit of Nostalgia, Just Needs a Dark ModeThis game filled a gap I forgot I had! I grew up playing Scrabble with family and then Words With Friends came along and I enjoyed that, so this is nostalgia for me. It’s also a perfect game to complement the rest of the NYT games. Only criticism is that the game needs a Dark Mode. Even on the dimmest setting, at night it’s still a little too bright for me. NYT please read this, I can’t be the only one!.Version: 2.14.0
Good but not enough 3 by 4 supportThe gameplay was great and felt authentic to the scrabble experience. One problem, I use an IPad and when I open it up the dimensions of the screen are set as if I was using a phone. It’s distracting and I prefer if it took up my whole screen. If I have it the normal way (long side horizontal) it’s especially small so I also have to adjust how I’m holding the IPad. These are all small nit picks but it genuinely negatively affected my experience so I hope this changes. Thank you.Version: 2.0.0
Love it but one suggestionI love the return to good old scrabble words without all the fake words that are permissible on Words with Friends. My only suggestion is to make it so if a game is started and the invited opponent does not respond within 24 hours, the inviter can be allowed to resign without penalty to their overall stats. This frees up the number of people they can play with instead of forcing them to wait all 7 days for someone that clearly is not going to accept the invite..Version: 2.3.0
Optimized for small screensI love the concept and am a big WordMaster fan. I tried this one out on my iPad but it still treated the game like it was played on a small screen, zooming in each time I place a tile. I find that really distracting and would like to be able to play it on an iPad without the zooming in. The dictionary has some obvious differences even just after a few games against AI, but that is to be expected. Great game, and I love that I can play it against my NYT friends..Version: 2.1.1
Great Scrabble-like game with no annoying jewels or ads!I used to play Scrabble before they ruined the app with jewels and ads. Ever since then I have played Upwords, which is nice, but I have always preferred the gameplay of Scrabble. CrossPlay has a different board, which I have not decided if it is better or worse, but the app is clearly way, way better. The main thing I find lacking is a player skill rating..Version: 2.4.0
Love it, but big problem…I absolutely love this app but as an 14 year old with parental controls on my iPhone, something about the app makes it not show up in the option to set app as Always Allowed. I guess my real problem is that I love this app so much that I want to play it more; but can’t. If there is a way to fix this that would be amazing and this is still an amazing app..Version: 2.9.0
Fine game, could use a couple refinementsEasy to play, another run-of-the-mill scrabble game. I like that I can play against the computer because I’m too impatient to wait in random matches to go. But I do not like that you can’t set up a multiplayer game and just pass the phone. Also don’t like that this game has no dark mode! For those who play in the evening or late at night, dark mode is a necessity. The bright white blue hurts my eyes, even during the day. And at night, the light is extremlely harsh and overstimulating. ADD DARK MODE PLEASE!.Version: 2.8.1
Missing resultIt’s a nice change from other games that have all sorts of extras with themes and points and in-game purchases. One thing it’s missing is showing you ALL of the results of your words before you play. Not sure how to describe it but if you have a row with your possible play parallel to an already played row and one word is wrong, it won’t tell you if any of the other possible plays are legit. Makes play take longer..Version: 2.8.0
Not ready for primetimeI’m very excited to have a Scrabble like game to play, but this one needs a bit more work. While the bot is quick to respond, it’s also very predictable and rarely wins. The algorithm that is supposed to match people with the same skill level needs work. At times a tile disappears and the best solution is to close the game and it will open again where you left off. The best bet here is to find a suitable friend to play with, especially one who doesn’t take days to make a move..Version: 2.3.0
Word Nerd HeavenI love having the freedom and ability to play people anywhere in the world. So many AMAZING players out there! You might want to turn up the difficulty on your ‘computer’ opponent…I’ve played it over 50 times and lost ONCE(!)….that seems quite unrealistic yes? Don’t worry…we can handle losing to a computer. Please take off the kid gloves and give us the challenge we want/need.Version: 2.8.1
Fun, But not ScrabbleI have had fun playing asynchronously with my husband and love that you can be matched with other users. My only down side is that the “allowed words” feel strange with some abbreviations being allowed and some alternative spellings, but not all. Some words that don’t exist in the dictionary have multiple meanings so definitely should be words like “Ra.” It’s odd that some foreign words exist but others don’t. No “Zion” but you can play “qadi” and “alef”..Version: 2.8.1
Fun! But No Dark ModeThis game is borderline addictive if you’re a competitive player like me. The hard level is decent although the game could be more challenging with the computer opponents. My main reason for giving it 4 stars is the app does not have the dark mode feature. I play my NYT games before bed & even after all my settings default to nighttime, the brightness is too much. Hopefully this feature will be added soon!!.Version: 2.0.0
Same as WWFIn its debut version, Crossplay suffers the same problem Words With Friends originally had. There is no mechanism to prevent brute-force permutation, trial-and-error (or solver lookup) plays of words you don’t know to maximize points. I guess that technically still meets the definition of a game but it isn’t very fun. In games with irl friends, it’s easy to agree to an honor system (or whatever house rules you decide), but the game doesn’t offer those limits and rules inherently in matching with randos. Hoping for changes in updates..Version: 2.16.0
Great, but bad on iPadI generally really enjoy this app and all of NYT games. Crossplay is great on my phone but the developers have not made a version that is optimized for iPad screen resolutions. On iPad, this app uses the same resolution as smart phones (16:9) and because it needs to be blown up so much, the text is grainy and blurry. Otherwise I have no complaints, but considering NYT games is a paid monthly subscription I do expect better. Hope this can be an easy fix. <3.Version: 2.1.1
Slight technical issuesThe app is giving me some issues where every time I open it, it kicks me off and I can’t play anything with people. I’ve checked multiple times to see if the app needed to be updated and it doesn’t. I’ve deleted it and redownloaded it and it’s still giving me the same issues. It’s other wise a fantastic game..Version: 2.13.0
Super fun!I love playing this daily along with my other NYT faves like Wordle and Connections. AND it only gets 3.5 stars because I like to play against the computer so I don’t have to wait for somebody else and I can play on my own timeline. I got cut off after so many games without any warning. Not happy about that. I would love to be able to play against the computer and definitely. Then, this would be my hands-down favorite game!.Version: 2.5.0
Good game design with one problemThe end game style of not waiting for one player to play out or for repetition of passes to end the game, is patronizing and loses some of the strategic importance of the game. Having to calculate the best moves while calculating the offloading of your high score tiles is integral to this game. Why did NYTimes change that? I suspect I know. To make it more accessible to less competitive customers..Version: 2.5.0
Surprised by how much I like it!I’ve never been a big scrabble or boggle player, but decided to give it a try anyway. To my great surprise, I really enjoy it. I like having the choice of either playing against the computer, or being matched to a perfect stranger who may be in a totally different state or even country! It’s a lot of fun, and quite frankly, addictive..Version: 2.15.0
Not Very GoodThe idea is great, except when no one plays the game it loses all meaning. I’ve only gotten to play one full game since I downloaded the app and that game took two days. I’ve made several attempts to play with other people but I make the first move and they NEVER respond. Seven days go by and they’re booted. Playing against the computer is fine but there aren’t any stats that come with it. This game has potential, but it relies heavily on other people to just play the game..Version: 2.1.1
Better Game of what’s AvailableYears ago, our family enjoyed very much playing cross Word on the iPad. We would play it on airplanes, traveling pass, and play were great and it disappeared after Apple kept on releasing one iOS version after another this is the best similar version of the old Scrabble, which is no longer available from Hasbro..Version: 2.1.1
Love this game! Please please please add a level in between medium and hard! I beat the computer every time which gets a boring but hard level is ridiculous and I get tired of losing 😬.Version: 2.10.0
Love!!!Keeps your mind busy, and helps you engage with other players! It’s squire simple, and not hard to understand! Although, for some people it may seem a bit boring after a while, as there’s not much variety between what you do..Version: 2.17.0
Literally just scrabbleIt's literally just 2 player scrabble. It's well done though so I can see myself playing some more of it..Version: 1.18.0
Weird words allowed and regular words not!Other than what’s in the title, this is definitely a fun game. But warning, could be addictive..Version: 2.17.0

A good way to avoid doom scrollingMy daughter introduced this to me and I’ve got to say it’s been great when I can’t find actual humans to play against. I play against the computer and it avoids me from endlessly doom scrolling. Plus, I get to learn new words and use my brain..Version: 2.15.0

Faster turns by my opponentsIt takes too long for my opponents to play their turn. I wait for hours and sometimes days for them to take their turn. So I play many games at the same time..Version: 2.5.0
