Ancient Legacy Positive Reviews
Create a sequel please!I really enjoyed this game! The gameplay is quite simple like an old roll and move board game but engaging and manages to feel like an adventure. I have almost every title from Game Stew but I always come back to this one. It hits all the right spots for me. I would love to play a sequel to this or even an IAP update with new content or worlds to conquer. Favorite iOS game. Thanks!.Version: 1.0.9
OK but unbalancedI like the concept of this game and at first really enjoyed it. But then I started experiencing how unbalanced the battles are. There is one enemy in particular (not even a boss) that starts with 9 base attack plus dice rolls. It is nearly impossible to beat him, you’d have to be lucky enough to win the lottery, and he instantly kills you. Try as you might, you can never build your attack stats to a 9 base stat. If there was some kind of bonus when you died, like your stats get stronger each time, it would work. But as it is, I don’t like this game anymore and deleted it, even though I bought all the IAPs. Tower of Fortune is much better, you can actually progress in that one. I don’t recommend this game..Version: 1.0.10
Wonderful but...I really really enjoyed this game when I was playing it, and when I kept dying, it made me want to keep trying to see how far I could get. But here’s the thing. After all the buildup and all the time it took me to finally beat the final boss, I was expecting a little bit more than just a screen with the final score and a couple pages of epilogue text. I don’t really know what I was expecting, but after such a long struggle, it felt a little bit anti-climactic. Aside from that, the gameplay was super fun and engaging with just the right amount of frustration. Keep up the good work, Game Stew. I look forward to many more games from you!.Version: 1.0.6
One of The Best Retro Style GamesPeople who have not played Game Stew games like Legacy or the Tower of Fortune series games are really missing out on an amazing gaming experience. These games are meticulously polished and designed by someone with very thorough understanding of the classic rpg games and roguelikes. The music and sound effects are amazing and the humor is very clever..Version: 1.0.14
Fun little gameIt plays like a board game. I beat it within a day. A bit unbalanced and the difficulty of the “towns” are not in order. I don’t like that there were so many random encounters that could instantly end your game on a bad roll..Version: 1.0.12
Old schoolThis is a great game with a ton of replay value. The old school graphics and play style fit right in with the awe inducing difficulty. The game mechanics are easy to wrap your head around with some experimentation but the fact that I could, and do, die often keeps me coming back for more. I'll probably cry when I finally beat it and just hope I'm not in public when I do..Version: 1.0.2
7+ (iOS 10.x)Unique and entertaining. Definitely deserves more attention than it has gotten to this point. ***EDIT: Thanks for the continued support!.Version: 1.0.4
Awesome LegacyAncient Legacy feels like a simple but fun rogue board game. The experience is enjoyable, the game play is intuitive, and I’m looking forward to endless fun playing this game..Version: 1.0.6
Good and simple gameplay with variationsLove simple games with deeper stories or things to incover.Version: 1.0.9
The best!Favorite developer, favorite games. Please keep making these great Game Boy colored games! Thank you!.Version: 1.0.8
I want to love this game...I adore Game Stew and want nothing more than to love everything they put out. But, as good as this game is, the few game-play flaws detract from the overall enjoyment. The good: Ancient Legacy is a wonderful combination of board game (read: dice-based fun) and RPG (level-up to take on greater challenges, and build even better shops). The playable classes are varied and add new elements to the gameplay. A fun little game overall. The bad: there are a few gameplay flaws which are frustrating. As an example, the "switch dice rolls" mechanism sounds great at the onset, but when you have spent much time and effort creating a powerful character, you end up not being able to win in the end. There seems to be no way of countering, and you end up having no opportunity to continue forward (especially since monsters that aren't defeated continue to plague the game). The stronger you become (which is a necessity to continue further in the game), the more assured you are to lose when your attack numbers are switched. While this may seem trite, it's an example of ideas great in concept, but lacking in play. Final word: This is a nice middle-of-the-road game. Not bad but not great. Game Stew has nothing to be ashamed of, but the game just doesn't rise to their normal level of greatness.Version: 1.0.1
A Great Addition to the SeriesEach of the Game Stew games retains their idiosyncratic graphical style and apocalyptic vision while introducing a new gameplay mechanic. In the Tower of Fortune games this was a slot machine mechanic within an ascending or descending Tower. In Gargoyle Ruins this was a Game & Watch mechanic within a dungeon. War of Eclipse features flying ships battling Evangelion-esque angels using a guage mechanic. In Devil Shard you battle waves of enemies using a match-3 mechanic. Ancient Legacy introduces their most non-linear progression yet through the tabletop boardgame style and dice gameplay mechanic. Your hero advances along the perimeter of the board within an invisible or transparent series of squares. Each of the elements of the ornate border represents a unique area of its own with several possibilities that can occur depending on the random roll of the dice. You first role to determine how far your character moves. From the designated square you then role to determine the event that will transpire and then role again to determine the outcome of the event or battle. Events are very similar to those found in Tower of Fortune 2 but seem to me to include more narrative-centric occurrences related to the location. (Familiar iconic foes such as the Scum Family also make an appearance.) From the starting board you have access, depending on where you land, to different game boards each with their own unique missions and narratives. Each square of each different location seems to provide unique opportunities and secrets. Combined with the randomization of the dice mechanic this makes for a tremendous amount replay value. Ever since the original release of the very well-received Tower of Fortune, I have been a big fan of Game Stew and continually surprised and delighted by their creative series of games. Much thanks to the developers for continuing to make such unique and enjoyable games!.Version: 1.0.0
Excellence from Game Stew againI always enjoy Game Stew games. I really like exploring their gameplay systems and getting lost in the atmosphere created by the music and stylized retro graphics. Took me a bit of time to fully wrap my head around the gameplay and economy of resources in this game, but once I did, it's been a pleasure to work through. Still only played with one character, might try the others later, but her "roll two dice for events" has saved my life several times..Version: 1.0.2
I love this game!Game stew and ravenous games are 2 great companies that i look forward to buying there games they never disappoint and have great games, I'm mainly a pc gamer so my standards are high, I love this game a lot of people are saying things are like its imbalanced no! This game is perfect in fact i beat it on every character, free to play, wise and it was enjoyable! To GameStew: Please make more games like this its stupendously amazing and i would definitely buy it!!!!.Version: 1.0.3
Excellent!I had a blast sealing away Cthulhu :) Another excellent America by GameStew. The retro graphics are excellent and the game play was fun. I agree with the previous review that some of the text got a bit tedious, but I thought it was only a little bothersome for me, and the enjoyment outweighed it. I died many times before I found the strategy that worked. The fact that there are quite a few places where rolling a 1 can mean you're squeezed to death and then game over means hours of play can be lost in a second which blows... but, the same thing happens in real life too, so oh well. If you liked other games by the Dev, you'll like this one. If you haven't tried any they are worth giving them a try :).Version: 1.0.2
Addictive funThis game has flaws (pointless, gender-centric insta-death, tons of randomness, a bit repetitive) but for whatever reason I'm addicted to it. Some people play solitaire or candy crush forever - this is that for me. I've played it through maybe 7 times now and I just unlocked all the playable characters to try and finish with each one. Fun, simple and addictive. Worth every penny..Version: 1.0.1
Future updatesThe call game is so much fun I can't stop playing it! However the post game is much worse than all of their other games combined :( I really hope they make an update that allows you to unlock everything simply by playing the game. I am still giving it five stars because I really like this company and I like so much of what they have done..Version: 1.0.1
ANCIENT LEGACY...Game Stew continues to make unique, original, great games... Just a bit disappointed in the amount of IAPs this time around. You only get two heroes and the rest need to be purchased. Premium apps should at least have the option to earn these types of items in-game..Version: 1.0.0
Awesome Board/RPG!!!Great retro style graphics. Think Talisman: DE on a gameboy. Fun and addictive. Look forward to future updates. IAP for additional heroes. Normally, I hate everything about IAP's but Game astew is a small company that puts out high quality games. Support this game and I hope to see more quality from this company..Version: 1.0.1
FunCool little game. I like the board game style. Retro graphics are good even though I'm getting tired of retro graphics. My only complaint is the same as the others, it's too easy to die. Need to work on the combat side a little more. Other than that it's a good time waster game.Version: 1.0.2
Please fix the bug. It's a good game and somehow addictive. But a bug happened after my camp was destroyed and I was ambushed in the camp. No dice I can use to continue the game. Even after reloading, it happens again. It's frustrating since I tried hard to play and managed to level up to ATK 8 and now it's gone. Please fix the bug..Version: 1.0.2
Good funIn the vein of Talisman, a really delightful single-player RPG/board game hybrid..Version: 1.0.1
AwesomeA great little game. Just understand that everything is a role of the dice, so take the bad rolls in stride with the good and you'll have a great time!.Version: 1.0.1
True to the fans!Love the board game feel and the authentic gameplay! Thanks developers!.Version: 1.0.1
Underrated DevGame Stew makes some of the simplest, yet deeply-engaging games in the App Store. In my opinion, they're one of the platform's best developers -- with a unique stylistic vision. Ancient Legacy is their best game yet. This is a completely refined experience, and perfectly executed. The perfect mix of mobile and boardgame-style RPG gaming. Get it!.Version: 1.0.1
Tough and fun!Really challenging and addicting!.Version: 1.0.2
Addictive.Addictive little gem..Version: 1.0.1
Game stew rocksI love all Game Stew games like this.to me,this is what a phone game should be especially if you're 45 like me and don't have the time for games usually.i grew up with Game & Watch games so graphics are perfect.this is a fun game.i couldn't sleep one night and when the sun was coming up,I realized I'd been playing for over 3 hours.game is simple yet takes thought and some planning. I hate micro transactions but in this or other game stew games,I don't mind.spending a lil $ for in-game gold is worth it especially since you can play all of their games without spending a penny.please keep up the great work! Love the games and keep em coming!.Version: 1.0.3
My Favorite Game DeveloperIf you want a sense of being in the world of the game and like games where they don't feel like they are on rails, this is the developer for you. Game Stew are masters at suspension of disbelief and giving you ownership of your destiny. I always feel like I can go anywhere in the world. Tower of Fortune 2 was probably my top three favorite games of all time. I just loved it! After an hour of this I am really enjoying it, but I do miss the slot reel for the random element. I felt like I still had one more element in my favor with slots, but this is still awesome. I just love these games. The other great thing about this developer is the one touch simplicity of the interface in most of these games. You are never overwhelmed by hundreds of decisions that you will find in most adventure RPGs these days. You just make simple decisions. It lets you stay in the story and 'watch' the events unfold. If they could only make a Lord of the Rings game I would gladly pay $40.00 for it. The type of template that Game Stew uses is perfect for casual game play hybrid RPGs. Thank you, Game Stew!!.Version: 1.0.0
Mediocre Talisman cloneDo you like dice-ing your way around a board to victory? Then this will hook you, at least for the few hours it will take to beat it. Here's why it only gets 3 stars: - There's no tutorial. Basic mechanics (re-rolls cost 100 gold, the first board is a hub world, poison, whether you lose progress when you leave an area, etc.) are not explained. - The developer posted on a forum telling players to check the company's Facebook to find out how dangerous various areas are. Why not just TELL the player how dangerous the area is when you ask if he wants to enter it? (Start with the Mermaid area, NOT the Lake Town that you'll run across first) - There are interesting story quests (with nice art), but character improvement is mostly limited to increasing your health and attack bonus. All the interesting, situational bonuses are character-specific. And most of the characters have to be purchased with real money. - I've reached the penultimate area, and the game has become a real slog. The Dragon Cave's events can do up to 3 damage at once, and even some of the "good" results reduce your health. You can't choose to save your expensive swords for boss fights, so you have to spend extra money to fly straight to them. When you return to the main area to lick your wounds and grind gold, a super monster jumps around the board and damages your castle, requiring expensive repairs..Version: 1.0.1
More fun then it looks. The wizard is the best starter character because she survives almost every event with a positive result, and while every other character has a 50% chance of a good score, she has a 66% chance of a good score. Only problem is that the game is short, I have already maxed out my stats, and beat the 4 bosses, but I still haven't completed the so-called "main quest" of leveling up your home base which is just tedious grinding. There is really nothing else left to do except go in a circle and collect gold..Version: 1.0.2
A great twist on other Game Stew gamesI managed to finish it in about two days and found the difficulty punishing at times (just like other Game Stew games). I love the upgrade element of the outposts and once I figured out you could buy ore and meat upgrades from the store, it got easier than my first few playthroughs. I recommend adding a bit more of a tutorial, if possible, just so we know that your attack and health max out at 9. And you can just take potions to get to 9 health..Version: 1.0.2
