Through the Ages App Comments & Reviews
Through the Ages Positive Reviews
I am a big fanI loved the board game and I think the app is a great adaptation. Works on both iPhone and my IPad. No complaints at all, if you are used to friendly games where no one uses military you might be in for a surprise, but after a few games you figure out you better keep up especially in the last age. Basically if the other players are not trying to add culture even by age 2 its clear they are waiting for Napoleon. It’s hard once you fall behind on military or government to recover. So if I had a complaint it would be that. However you can find a few friends that all agree not to be obnoxious. Just like anywhere else on the internet. If you don’t know the game there is a steep learning curve. That isn’t new to the app, the game always takes a little to get used to. I found that the first few games I would lose track of certain things that happened previously. But after a while got used to not seeing the score or so the other players screens on a table in front of me. It’s all there you have know where to look. I say get the game and enjoy..Version: 1.7.6
Excellent adaptationThrough the Ages board game is a ton of fun, but it also has a lot of rules and a lot of triggers you can forget. The app does a truly excellent job smoothing this over. The tutorial is excellent at teaching you the game, and has a nice personal tone to keep the tutorial engaging. While playing, you can undo all the way back to the last-revealed piece of information (pretty much a whole turn). The app tracks what cards you submitted to the event deck and if that’s the only one left, it warns you that you “know” that event is coming. If you try to pass your turn, it will remind you about military tactics you can play or copy and when you might lose resources because you didn’t use enough of them that turn. When taking actions, a dialog pops up that lets you choose how to take that action (e.g. submit this colony to the event deck or colonize it by removing Christopher Columbus from play). Everything is just very smooth. I don’t have a single suggestion on improvement..Version: 2.11.47
No good, at firstI wrote a review before that wasn’t complementary. Truth is though, I continued to play after a bit of time passed. Was still met with some frustration. But I did start to learn how to play the game better. And I have to say that it does play like a board game. Which is to say that sometimes you lose because of bad luck or poor decisions. Yet I keep playing. The challenge is addictive. The only thing it’s missing from a board game is the goofing off and silly banter exchanged between friends and family. Which I find is half the fun of a good board game. In short, I will reprise my earlier review, and say that this game can be fun. If you don’t mind losing some. But that just makes your victories that much more satisfying. I left my earlier review below, in case anyone can relate to how I felt before. I've been playing this game for a few days now a lot. But no matter how hard I try, I have a hard time winning against one easy opponent. Maybe I'm missing something since I've never played the board game. I usually do pretty good at strategy games, but this game doesn't click with me. Now I'm just passed I spent ten bucks on it..Version: 1.2.6
This app made me buy the board gameWhile it does take some time to learn, it’s well worth it. The tutorial is extremely helpful and actually very funny. Who thinks to make such an entertaining tutorial? It makes learning such an intricate game much easier. Don’t even try to play without doing that first. You’ll get frustrated and miss out on some witty banter. As far as the game goes, this is probably the most fun I’ve had playing a game in as long as I can remember. So much so that my family has purchased the actual board game now as well. It’s VERY nice and very well-built. There is so much variety available in this game that the replay-ability is very high. I recommend spending a tad more to get the expansion version once you’ve got the original down. It’s even better balanced and adds great new cards, wonders and leaders. If you’re a history buff or just a fellow strategy game-lover, you’re in for a treat!.Version: 2.11.47
Excellent tutorial, great combo of luck and strategyThis is a great game themed optimization/luck/strategy game. You can pick it up at any time to continue playing against AI players, then put it down instantly whenever your elevator arrives or whatever, to continue later. There are no additional abilities or DLCs to purchase later - you get the whole game for the original purchase price that is well worth it. The tutorial is outstanding and a lot of fun. There are three levels of AI difficulty - after maybe 100 games I’m still using easy AI but I can tell I’m getting better and will move up soon. You can also play online against human components if you know you’ve got 40+ minutes to kill, and that’s great, too. This is one of the best of the best of the Euro games that have come to the fore in the last 15 years. A beautifully balanced and entertaining game that incorporates the best concepts of modern board games - worker placement, strategy, random elements, extremely high replayability, created by a master board game designer. Truthfully, the digital version is better than the board game it emulates, because the digital game automatically handles housekeeping tasks and allows you the option to play on your own against AI players (which means you’ll be much better prepared when you later play the physical board game with real in-person humans). This has been my main iPhone/iPad game for 3 months now. I highly recommend it!.Version: 1.5.1
One of my favorite board gamesI was thrilled to find there is an app for this game. The price tag made me hesitate for a moment, but I could not ask for anything better. There is a more streamlined/app friendly version of the rules, but I chose to stick with the tabletop rules, and it is exactly like the game. If, such as is my case, you don't know anybody with the patience for an hours-long game, then this is for you. If you enjoy Through The Ages, then it is definitely worth it! EXPANSION UPDATE: As soon as I discovered there was an expansion released, I bought it immediately. I was very pleased with the new dimensions added by the leaders and wonders, and they make you rethink a go-to strategy, or even take a course you normally would not have taken with just the base cards. I switched to using the digital rules and they are very minor changes but make online games a breeze. I am looking forward to the physical release of the expansion!.Version: 2.1.39
I’ve discovered an amazing game!I’ve just read a review criticizing this game for being too hard (even on easy level). Well, people have to understand that this game has been around for a while and holds one of the highest complexity rates on he top board games ever created. Even if you are used to gaming, TTA has a lot of depth in it and it takes more than a few plays to get used to its mechanics. It’s a ver rewarding game if you are up for the challenge. This is not a game you will win on your first or second match. The AI, to be honest, is not that strong, but it’s enough to give most people at least some challenge. I’m not a good player at all, but after 20 matches or so I could beat the hardest level heads up. I still occasionally lose as well. This app is very well designed. I can play even on the tiny iPhone screen and keep track of all my stuff and everything the opponents are doing. Also. It runs on my old iPad 2!! To sum up, this app changed my mind about this game. I own a copy since it’s release, but before playing it over 50 times on the app it was just an ok game for me. Now, after so many plays I am able to realize how well designed TTA is and why it does deserve to be on the top board games of all time. Since I’ve played this over 50 times and every match takes about an hour, I’d say my 10 bucks were a very good investment..Version: 1.5.1
Great Adaptation & Challenging AIThis game is a near-perfect implementation of the board game, and just as fun. The AI plays an extremely strong game considering how complex the game is. I usually play a 4P Expert AI game, and I've only won once so far. I love the challenge. Speaking of which, I haven't attempted any of the "challenge" modes in the game. I'm having too much fun trying to beat the AI. Also, I love the async rules for online play. They speed up what would otherwise be a tedious experience. (Note to readers: the online async rules are optional). The only thing that would make this game better is expansion leaders and wonders. Please release them ASAP!!!! I'm kind of tired of Michaelangelo. Oh, and feedback about the game in general. I feel like early Aggressions are almost non-existent in this edition of the game. I don't think the card discard penalty is strong enough to make players think twice about defending. In the old edition, you had to sacrifice soldiers to defend, which was far more difficult a decision. I understand why the change was made, but it's almost too easy to defend when you are 2-3 points back now. Suggestion: If you choose to discard a card to defend, perhaps each card costs you one military action the following round? That would be a much tougher decision for me, and would increase aggressions without forcing unit sacrifices. Keep up the great work!.Version: 1.3.1
PatienceI really like this game. I also like the graphs at the end that show your production across all areas, turn by turn, compared to your rival. That is cool! I do want to give advice to new players. I almost gave up on this game because I made the mistake of trying to quickly play through my turns and paid no attention to my rival. Consequently, I lost every game. So I almost gave up, but then decided to try one more time, and slowed down. I thought through my choices on every turn, figured out that production and military strength early on is important, while still doing things to generate culture. I even wrote down what my rival was doing so I could analyze the AI’s card and resource production choices. For new players, I would tell you - take your time and think through your turns. It makes a difference (I won that game by 31 points)..Version: 2.19.993
Great implementation of this outstanding boardgameThis takes away all the fiddly accounting of the boardgame and adds a much improved visual representation of your civilization as well as a very intuitive interface. Pleasantly surprised by how well the developers have managed to transfer such a rich and complex game to an iOS platform. This is going to become a top game for me, as I am already loving it. For those of you who enjoy the original boardgame, you will not be disappointed by this version. In fact you will probably think it's an improvement. For those new to the game, the tutorial and reminders throughout the game make it very approachable and allows you to feel immersed in the game without feeling overwhelmed. Be warned, however, that this is a subtle and complex game so be prepared to feel challenged!.Version: 1.0.60
Great game, app well doneFirst off, yes... Through The Ages is a difficult BOARD game. I think people giving poor reviews based on difficulty has zero relevance here when commenting on the app version. The difficulty has nothing to do with the app itself. The user interface is well done. Adaptation of the billions (exaggerating) of cards are easy to use and will be able to play mostly without having to read any ‘what buttons do what’ guides. Majority of things going on in the game are intuitive to those familiar with the board game. Some minor things I’d like to see done differently: 1) Allow options for choosing the ‘Simple’, ‘Advanced’ or ‘Full Game’. 2) Allow options for game variants that are available in the actual board game rules. 3) Use actual player board from the board game, or at least the option. While this isn’t a big deal for people unfamiliar with the board game... I imagine a lot of board gamers would appreciate it (we game nerds prefer substance over style, and don’t need flair to enjoy a board game). Wonderful game, which does have a high degree of learning to strategize, let alone master (that is a good thing). If you want a quick and easy game, there are plenty of other board game apps available. But if you want an app version of one of the highest rated and loved board games around... this is it!.Version: 1.5.1
App as game assistantWe use the app (with the expansion) to play our (literal/physical) tabletop game. The app controls the card row, the event deck and colony bidding. Everything we do on the tabletop we mirror on the app. The app is set up to play we two online. The app shows all resources and statistics in real time. We have no disputes as the app is the rule keeper and keeps us from losing track and allows us to try actions and subsequently back out as needed. The status screens of all cards in the game by age let’s us play a better game. The log allows us to never forget what we did and allows us to easily correct errors in tabletop play. The app is very well done and very easy to use. The graphics and UI are very well designed. Kudos to Chvátil and his team for a great game and a great app..Version: 2.11.47
Best boardgame I’ve got for iOSAnd I have quite a few. It helps that Through the Ages is already a fantastic game. I learned it via a play-by-web version that I think was fan-designed. I never quite understood some of the finer points because I’d never played the tabletop version, and I’d find myself facing corruption and/or unrest and wouldn’t know how I’d gotten there. After the (extremely amusing and helpful) tutorial I had figured it all out. And now it’s pretty much the only iOS game I play. There are so many strategies to discover. It consumes my interest completely for the 30ish minutes it takes to play a game vs the AI. And the AI is no slouch, at least if you’re a noob like me. Best $10 I’ve ever spent on a video game on any platform. What are you waiting for, get this!!.Version: 1.0.62
IMHO best digital board game port everAs both an avid tabletop gamer and someone who owns ever digital port out there (also own the physical games too), I can say without a doubt this is the best iPad board game/port I have ever played. Extremely true to the real game, amazing graphic design, intuitive UI and mechanics feel tight and fluid. This is a must have for all board game enthusiasts. Two small issues that I think bring it down a little- (a) cannot add AI players to local pass and play, (b) there should be an option to hide military cards when playing with pass and play. This can be a real issue as in the real game watching your opponents turn is extraordinarily important to playing well. I really wish you could turn the cards over with a click (like having a hand of cards). If these issues were fixed a strong 5 stars!!.Version: 1.8.2
Buy it, just buy itIf you know about this board game, then you have already bought this without needing to look at reviews. If you have not, then this is the perfect way to learn. This is one of the best board games ever made. It is in the top 20 board games TWICE (once for the original edition and for this edition). The tutorial for this game is spectacular. It makes this quite complex game easy to learn. That being said, this is a challenging game. This is not your monopoly or clue; this is a game for a more “civilized” era. The AI is tough, and you probably wont win for a while. Every game is till extremely satisfying. I hope this review helps, along with the other countless 5 star reviews. This is the best thing to happen to digital board games in a long time..Version: 1.0.62
(Fixed) Keeps crashing in challenge modeEdited - The developers got back to me and suggested that my iPad might be older and if I click the option for reduced graphics it might help. It fixed the issue completely and I can’t even tell a difference. I love this game. It is super fun and addictive. It would be 5 stars except for when I try to play the challenges the app keeps crashing. You can restart it and it doesn’t lose your spot, but it will only crash again and again. Usually once it starts it will keep happening over and over and it takes a long time to be able to finish the game. What is weird is it lets you play more than half the game before it crashes the first time..Version: 2.7.5
Strategic Depth Without The HeadacheNote: Possible bug? Recently got latest update plus expansion. Several times, in Medium Level Mixed Cards challenge against two computer AI, the International Agreement cars will not allow me to choose cards when I choose the Skip Politics option, even when my hand is empty. Very frustrating :( Actual Review: An obvious labor love. Can be overwhelming to absolute newbs but then the tutorial is funny and informative. Lots of challenges to keep on and offline gamers busy. NOT a Civilization clone, but fans of Sid Meier’s Civ are likely to dig this. I really appreciated the visuals, with upgraded buildings and acquired colonies showing up on the map and really giving you a feel for how far you’ve come. The only bug I’ve run into is the one listed above, as of September 2019. Worth the 10 bucks..Version: 2.1.39
Better than the board gameI own the board game, which is a lot of fun despite being seriously flawed: it’s a fidgety game that makes you push pieces to keep track of a million different things, takes forever to set up, has a bit of a learning curve, and takes a long time commitment to play. The app addresses those flaws marvelously; the fidgety parts are taken care of automatically; there is a tutorial that teaches how to play and a series of challenges to ramp up your skill and comfort with the game, and if playing with others you can choose how fast you want to play, whether you have the time to play straight through, or whether you have to work around a job and family life..Version: 1.5.1
Best Card-driven Civilization digitalized board gameI’m a big board & card game enthusiast with a fairly large collection (compared w/ normal folks) and this digitalized version might even be better than its original 2nd Edition tabletop version. This is easily my favorite Civilization-themed board game and I love playing it online with my real-life gamer friends. This digital version allows for the near perfect info of tracking all the game decks and each opponents’ civilization, all at your very fingertips. Now, the new expansion allows for more variety and mix of cards to keep the game fresh with every new session. I wholeheartedly recommend this Civ based game as it has some learning curve but its really worth the ascent..Version: 2.7.5
Poor 32-bit OptimizationThis app is the best implementation of a board game I’ve ever played, and I’ve played a lot of them. Combine that with the fact that the board game is solidly designed (there’s a reason it’s rated so highly on BGG), and you have a must-play app. Unfortunately, the game was poorly optimized for 32-bit devices (iPad 4 and lower); it constantly crashes. So, if you have only a 32-bit device, you’ll likely be frustrated by it. Otherwise, dive in without reservation! If the devs manage to eliminate crashes on 32-bit devices, I’ll increase my rating to 5 stars. But until they do (multiple updates since release still haven’t helped), I can give it only 3 stars..Version: 1.3.1
Great game, small bugsWhat a great game! I’ve enjoyed learning via the tutorial and playing it. I’ve only encountered a few bugs which seem to be of the sort that would be hard to find in testing. The first one was that the online play did not work through my wireless, but it works fine if I switch to LTE. I believed this must be specific to my router configuration. The second was a hard game crash during local play. I wasn’t able to continue the saved game as it would just load and crash at the same place. This didn’t happen in my other local games, so I’m guessing it’s a problem that only occurs in a specific state..Version: 1.2.6
Does the AI cheat?Play this all the time on hard and it’s one of the toughest games. But I am amazed how often Dark Ages comes up when you are about to play a government for example. I’ve learned to just expect things like that all game long. Similarly if you build the wonder that lets you get an island without having one in your hand, you probably will never draw one. Little behind on military, don’t count on ever drawing a military tactic card. Maybe it’s just chance but it’s surprising. And when you attack the AI their hands seem stacked with good military tactics to defend. Every now and then I delete it because it seems like blatant cheating but I come back to it..Version: 2.19.1133
Interesting Yet Defeating GameIf there is one thing I have to say about this game, it needs difficulties. And when I say that, I mean the training needs to be training, easy needs to be easy and so on. There needs to be a better sense of progress. Not punishment/frustration. Tone it down. I have seen the reviews here and I believe there need to be more critical/helpful reviews. This game is interesting but feels “hopeless” at the same time. It really is no fun to play a game where the “easy” AI is already hard. Why play further then? It’s a card game, not an IQ test. And the card game is way too complicated compared to others. I have played plenty of civilization/strategy games throughout my life - Civilization, Age of Empires, Armello and so on - and never have I faced a more discouraging game than this. I have hardly beaten the easy AI, which is not a good thing. I usually don’t even know how I won, considering the AI spam the bonus points at the end. That should be the medium or hard AI. But when it’s easy alone that shows you up, why even bother trying anymore? It really is discouraging. And how can the hard AI be any harder if easy knows the game so well? I have tried this game at least a dozen times and don’t feel like I’m learning anything. 7 Wonders is why I even found this game and that card game is way more balanced/easy. And when I lose at that, I don’t feel nearly as defeated. It’s a good game for all. It’s as several reviews have said for me; I feel like I am catching up with the AI only to have the game end. It’s ends too soon. There is a growing sense of frustration that defeats you right off with this. And playing a training AI is not an answer. That’s just dull. You just cut off its one hand/move. Brutal. Again, you don’t really learn anything, you just try to cheap win..Version: 2.4.1
A Great AdaptationI really enjoy this game. The board game is good, but this adaptation removes all the tedium of cube manipulation and status tracking, so the player can focus on playing. Where the board game can take six hours, this can be played solitaire in an hour or so. It’s a deep game. When you’re learning it, you may find that you quit after a few turns because you just realize you made a serious mistake two turns ago. The computer doesn’t care. Learn away! The adaptation greatly increases your situational awareness, showing you your income and assets. In just a click away, you can see how you compare to your rivals..Version: 2.11.47
It’s worth $10I’ve never played the board game before. Just know it’s #3 in the top 100 board games of all time. So it’s a must have really. The app does a great implementation of what I know the game is. I can’t appreciate as much as people who have played it on board but it is fantastic! The tutorial honestly alone is worth the play. It teaches you the basic fundamentals really well but you will still be kind of confused on a few things. Honestly I don’t know how I won my first game against the AI but I did on Easy but still with a challenge. With much still to learn but I had a great first experience. I’ll be playing this a lot! Great job to the DEVS!.Version: 1.5.1
Great AII really enjoy this game—very strategic, nice level of complexity, lots of options regarding game play, and many paths to victory. One of my favorite features is the AI. I have other games of this genre that I really like, but they have a sucky AI, so the only way you can have a good game is to play live players. The AI for this game at the advanced level is good enough to give me a run for my money every time—I probably win about half the time after playing a lot of games. When I first started, without having played the game before, the AI kicked my tail, even at the intermediate level. I like that challenge!.Version: 2.11.47
Top notch implementation of one of the all time great board gamesThe civilization style tabletop board game this is based on is not only one of my personal favorites, but as of this writing remains number three on boardgamegeek's all time rankings, and has been high on that list for quite some time. This implementation is one of the nicest I've seen in a game of this depth, giving me no trouble in doing what I want to do (except of course the trouble provided by the game itself, or my opponents). Tutorial is great, single player is great, multiplayer is solid. There are slight changes to timing in order to be more practical with asynchronous play, although even these changes are optional. Overall, even though it can be brutal when you fall behind, which I normally hate, I love love love Through the Ages. This app has made it possible for me to play TTA many more times than I ever could have gotten the board game version to the table. That makes me happy; can you put a price on that? Yes you can, it's $9.99..Version: 1.6.24
Responsive service and oh yeah - an amazing game!I recently began looking for digital boardgames to play with my crew. We immediately thought of TTA but were afraid to conquer the learning curve. We started by going through the tutorial - only to see that it crashed due to the recent iOS update. We reached out for support and had a reply within a day or so that the dev team was working to fix the bug. Within a week, they had and now the crew and I can start to learn this amazing game better. Thx so much and wow - this truly is the standard that other digital board game translations can look up to. Amazing..Version: 2.11.47
Works well in pandemicVerified that family sharing works, and we also play with friends who bought the game with their own money. We had one terminal glitch and had to abandon a game but otherwise it’s been pretty flawless over many games. There is a learning curve. I mostly lose, but still have fun. You can play with people you know or people you don’t know or by yourself (against the computer). The pacing is so perfect. You play a hand for five minutes and then walk away while waiting for others to play. My games typically last about a week and provide little moments of fun several times a day when it’s my turn to play. I bought an expansion pack and it’s fun. Unfortunately expansion packs don’t work with family sharing. Devices tested include iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 10, and iPad Pro 2018. Play the tutorial and read the rules - you’ll have less frustration that way..Version: 2.8.119
Amazing - please add Peaceful Variant! This is an incredible implementation of a great game. One of the best! It’s easier to play than the physical game because it takes care of the accounting. I got this app when it was new and the developers said a peaceful variant would come most likely. We’ve had an expansion but still no peaceful variant option and I’m losing hope that this is a priority for the developers. PLEASE??? I really only want to play the peaceful variant and I really only want to use the app b/c it takes care of the accounting. But.... I can’t. Life is hard... I know....Version: 2.11.47
Make custom games more custom please!Absolutely love the digital version of this game! My only suggestion is if you could give us a little bit more freedom in the custom custom game settings. I want the option to make my games longer, and do wacky stuff with the settings kind of like you have the challenge modes set up. Users love more freedom! Other then that, this is everything I would hope a “Through the Ages,” digital version would be! Excellent work and I look forward to see what else the team can dream up for the future of this magnificent board game..Version: 2.4.1
Latest update made the game less fun to playEDIT: Podcasts work again after latest update. Most excellent. I used to be able to listen to podcasts while playing, but now this game kills all audio playing from other apps. And the rendering is now causing crashing. I can tell it speeds up frame rate during animations which looks pretty when it works, but if you play with the hard AI the CPU still kills the frame rate so it is kind of pointless. But as it is a turn based game, who cares about frame rate? Wish I could downgrade..Version: 2.8.96
Makes a daunting boardgame accessibleLove board games & love Vlaada but the bookkeeping in this, otherwise deliciously rich, boardgame makes playing the tabletop version almost impossible. Enter this gem of a digital version, taking away all the tedious bookkeeping & leaving only the fun brainy core puzzle that's worth getting lost into. Inspite of such a complicated & fussy (in a good way) source material, the UX is bug free & excellent, which just shows the amount of effort & care that went into designing this digital version. Would wholeheartedly recommend!.Version: 2.11.47
Bought the app to teach me how to playMy husband loves board games. I enjoy them as long as I understand them. The rules to this game confused me resulting in the game sitting on the shelf for over a year. This app continues to teach me new strategies and techniques without the frustration of having my husband tell me I am too slow. Once I understand it completely I will kill my husband while playing. Takes the frustration out of learning (to an extent as it took me two days to beat easy). Addiction and fun as all board games should be!.Version: 1.5.1
AddictiveI was looking for a turn-based strategy game that I can play for 10 minutes at a time, or keep me entertained on a long flight, and this fits the bill perfectly. I thought it was a bit too challenging at first, even on “easy” games, but now that I have the hang of it, I win about 25% of the time, which keeps me coming back for another try. The game offers a ton of variation. You can try numerous strategies, the AI isn’t predictable, and the variety of cards make every game unique. My only wish is that the easy mode was a little easier, especially for a first-time player..Version: 1.5.1
Endless fun!Perfect adaptation of the board game. The tutorial is easy to follow for those that have never played before, and for those that have, the user interface is so well done that you don't even need the tutorial. My wife and I have already had over a dozen games in under a week. It is nice to not have to finish the game all in one sitting either. We can start a game, take a break and then finish later. Or even have multiple online games going at once. I strongly recommend this app. Can't wait for the expansion!.Version: 1.0.62
Must buy for boardgame fansIMHO, it is better than the board game. I even like it better than Sid Meier’s Civilization. Perfect execution, wonderful AI and the most fun tutorial for a board game ever. Expect a learning curve but it is worth it. And please just ignore the negative reviews, especially the one from someone who calls himself a “gaming vet” but who can’t beat the game on easy. That review says more about the writer the game. The game is challenging but if you pay attention to what is going on then you will be beating the AI on hard pretty quickly, and you will love doing so..Version: 2.1.32
Perfect upgrade of the game to Age IIIThey did an amazing job. It has all the strategy, but it fills in so many holes that could be lost in the conversion. Allowing you to undo actions until you get it just right, reminders of consequences (corruption, uprising, even forgetting the Ocean Liner), and most importantly a streamlined auction for territories. This game got it all right. Even more impressive, the AI is really good. It's rare to say something cannot be improved, but between the original source material and the great implementation to the app, my battery is devoted almost exclusively to this..Version: 1.2.4
Excellent but a few rules are obscuredI am a huge Clash of Cultures fan and was looking for a new 4x style game. Tried the app before picking up the board game. The rule book is very good and is easily accessible mid-game and I use it a lot. My only real complaint is a lack of understanding around the events that pop up at the end of the game. Plus you can't see the board while they're resolving so you can't figure out why they scored the way they did. So with minor complaints, I still give it a 5 star. Quite an excellent app..Version: 1.0.62
Excellent, almost perfectBought this on a family vacation as a long-flight time-passer. Hadn’t played the tabletop edition, but my wife’s a fan of it, and this adaption proved faithful enough that she was able to teach me to play. Have had an enormous amount of fun since. Small critique: I miss the ability to mix human and AI opponents in pass-and-play. And I gotta say, I feel disappointed that Sid Meier shows up as a leader. I get the homage/joke, but it feels like he’s occupying a slot that could have gone to anyone other than another white dude. (Nelson Mandela?).Version: 1.8.2
Love the translationTtA Digital is awesome! Solo play is easy. AI works quickly. Tutorial was funny! I own the tabletop game and love the digital version. My only suggestion would be to somehow bring the later age units "closer" to the player. I have a large phone screen and I still find them to be pretty "far away" on my screen. Especially if I don't have buildings in between. Like going from bronze to oil. But that's just cosmetic and personal preference. Love how it translates from the concrete real game to the digital. Easy purchase. Two thumbs up. 5/5..Version: 1.0.62
Amazing, deep, with a funny tutorialI'm assuming if you are a board game geek, you already bought this game, based on how awesome the physical copy is. For the rest, let me assure you - if you like Civ but wish you could play a complete game in 20-30 minutes, you will love this. If you think it looks intimidating to learn, fear not; this gem has one of the funniest tutorials I've ever played, taking all the worry out of the game. When you play, be prepared to be amazed at the vast options, all valid, towards winning. Buy it. It's worth the money..Version: 1.0.60
Well DoneVery polished! Succeeds in every way I had hoped. If you enjoy the boardgame, you will love this. Takes 4hours to play the boardgame and so I just don't get the opportunity. With this app I can get a complete game in 20 minutes. Great support. 2 updates already. Ability to move forward and backwards through turns to find the right combination of plays - really is improving my strategies. One of my all time favorite apps! Definately one of the best boardgame to app implementations you will find..Version: 1.3.1
Entertaining Civ-Style Game, Needs Balanced WarfareFor those of us who enjoy Civ-style strategy games, Through The Ages is a solid multiplayer card game that provides a fun overview of the usual Civ experience. Choose your leaders and follow your path to greatness over the course of the ages. Great as a solo game versus AI, or timed multiplayer versus other players worldwide. BUT: The biggest issue with this game is that warfare is woefully imbalanced. The most common path to victory appears to be winning the early race to largest army - combine that with a healthy number of aggression or warfare events, and you are practically guaranteed victory. The problem as I see it is that aggression is an all or nothing event. If the aggressor wins, there is no cost to that player whatsoever, no matter how close the victim comes to a successful defense. In warfare, the spoils go to the person with the stronger military - attacker OR defender. I would like to see these same rules applied in the aggression events..Version: 1.8.16
Best Board Game App EverInsanely wonderful app. Allows you to take back parts of your move step by step, so you can try things out before committing. Does all the heavy lifting when it comes to the fiddly stuff. Very cool sounds, too. I usually like the physical board games better than the app version, but this one’s the exception … I own the board game, but I only play the app version, because it’s perfect. Phenomenal job..Version: 2.19.748
Love this game, but lately, it crashes non-stop!At first, I thought I had wasted money on this game but the reality was I simply didn’t get it. After giving it some time, I fell in love with it and have an amazing time with the challenges and learning new strategies. Unfortunately, in the last few weeks (maybe since last update and I didn’t play enough to notice), the game has been crashing excessively. I’m talking like 5 times in 20 min. It will freeze mid-turn, and I’ll need to shut it down and reopen game. I am on a fairly new iPhone 7+, with updated iOS, and I’ve already restarted phone multiple times since noticing the issue so I feel it’s definitely on the game’s end. If this issue is corrected, the game is 5 stars. It’s 100% worth the price point, it’s challenging on many levels and has tons of replay value. I just can’t get through a single game without a freeze or crash anymore, thus the 3 Star review..Version: 1.7.6
Outstanding implementation of one of my favorite gamesThrough the Ages is a brilliant game, and this version has exceeded expectations in delivering the experience of play in a surprisingly simple and clear fashion. This is no easy feat given the complexity of the game's rules! Many iOS versions of board games are half-assed and only tolerable because of the quality of the original game, but clearly a lot of love and attention went into making this app live up to TtA's legacy..Version: 1.0.60
Great CommunityThis game is first and foremost a game that takes time to get good at. Once you start to understand the game it is still challenging online. You have to have a good strategy to be able to win and still sometimes that might not be enough. Coming from consoling gaming to this board gaming is refreshing. People are nice and they try to help you out it you ask questions. I recommend this to anyone who likes strategy/board games..Version: 1.5.1
Amazing gameGame is super fun once you know what your doing. I love it!.Version: 2.19.1128
Now I rememberI've played over 200 games and kept detailed records and now I remember why we stopped playing this game at the game club. It's way too militaristic. The AI (or one of them anyway if playing with 4 players), always goes military (I've seen a 54 military) and then will constantly attack the human player. This, despite the fact other AI players have significantly more victory points and have weaker military. This sometime will happen in the board game version, and because of this military skew that provides such game altering effects, we have stooped playing and I fear this is also the case for the digital version. I enjoy the mechanics of the game, but the military aspect is too powerful and makes playing the game unenjoyable at times.Version: 1.3.1
Hhij8iI don’t know if I can make it to your house today but I will try to get there before you guys leave and then I’ll come back home.Version: 2.19.1128

Best Asynchronous GameEndlessly repayable game with a thriving tournament scene. Fantastically designed multiplayer settings that will leave you entertained for years to come..Version: 2.19.1091
Amazing game!Extremely replayable. I play this game almost every day, and have yet to be bored!.Version: 2.19.987
How to appPuts user experience first. Highly replayable and always enjoyable..Version: 2.19.872
Cuts music volume 50%Great game. However, right now, when I open the app, it cuts my music volume by 50%. Please fix!.Version: 2.19.932
Why can other digital board games be like thisThis game is so well run for a mobile game. It stomps over all the other digital-board game remakes. It runs great, on-time notifications, lobby making with chat, profiles, set timers, the ability to swap apps while waiting, it’s got it all. I hope this company considers bringing other board games to this same digital standard. You’d have my business, even 20$+, lets get it going, there is a big market here. Lords of water deep Arestia! Architects of the west kingdom. Tons of great games Im surprised this is not top #1 in board game..Version: 2.19.819
Great game! This game translates so well to an app. It's well worth the cost..Version: 2.17.597
5 starsThe best strategy game ever!!!.Version: 2.11.47
Great GameComplex challenge, always a different path and highly engaging. Great game!.Version: 2.11.47
Great game!Much easier than playing the board game, as the game is quite complex and has lots of counters to keep track of. Really well designed iOS version of the game. The expansion is worth it too, especially if you’ve played the regular version for a while..Version: 2.11.47
The Best Game EverI’ve played this game so many times and it still is so fun..Version: 2.11.47
The BestBy far the best Board Game on iOS. By far. Extremely complicated to play irl, extremely easy on digital. A masterpiece..Version: 2.11.47
Great GameUnique, challenging and a fun strategy game to play :-)).Version: 2.11.47
My favourite game!I’ve been playing almost daily for over 2 years. Countless countless hours of entertainment. Well worth the price. I recommend it to all my board game friends. The game itself is great and the app UI is excellent..Version: 2.11.47
Great Port of the Game! Batts Killer Though. This is a well polished port of the board game. The local campaigns and the online matching is very well done. I am enjoying this game and loving it. Only issue is that it drains my batteries. Playing one game kills my phone’s battery by 30%, other board game ports like Terra and Agricola don’t even take 5%. Must be some way to optimize Through the Ages..Version: 2.11.47
Best strategy game on iOSGreat multiplayer and lots of single player content as well. Excellent game.Version: 2.8.119
Good implementation, great tutorialThe in-game tutorial is superb..Version: 2.11.42
Never board of it.I always enjoy the game, it never plays the same and has multiple ways to approach it. The expansions are enjoyable as well. Worth the time and effort..Version: 2.8.119
Best of the bestThrough the ages is, with or without the expansion, perhaps the best strategy game in existence. The board game is fabulous, but the iOS app has the advantage of keeping track of your statistics for you, and gives you the ability to experiment with your outcomes before committing. A difficult learning curve, but an absolute must for serious gamers..Version: 2.8.119
My favourite game appAfter having tried other board game apps, I have new appreciation for how extraordinarily well-made this is. I’ve played about fifty games online and offline and never had an issue with any aspect of the game. CGE is now on my auto-buy list..Version: 2.7.5
My best game ever on smartphone (equal with Xcom enemy within)I only ever bought 2 non f2p games. Those 2 in the title. I own Xcom on ps4 and also computer and im buying the board game tmr for through the ages. It's so much fun.Version: 2.7.5
Great gameExcellent adaptation of the board game. Only issue is when playing the challenge, it keep crashing when you enter Age 2 and older..Version: 2.7.5
It’s the small thingsSimple and easy-to-use interface disguises a host of smart design decisions and QOL features. This is exactly what board game ports should aspire to be..Version: 2.7.5
Great Adaptation of an Amazing GameA full civilization game. No small feat! I got the real life board game because of this excellent app. In real life the game is really excellent, but demands lots of bookkeeping that can drag the game length a bit. In this all is done for you and each turn can just fly. Can and have recommended this app multiple times. Simply the best Civ game in your pocket there is..Version: 2.4.1
Great game but crashesThanks for contacting me. The fix for it crashing seems to have worked. Great game!.Version: 2.4.1
ImpressiveI’ve never been so impressed with a mobile game before. Very few bugs, great multiplayer support, good updates, and a great UI for such a complex board game. What really impressed me? If you find a bug while playing a game, you can report it. That game is then locked/put on hold while the devs take a look. Once the bug is fixed you can resume your game. CGE has the best dev team when it comes to mobile board games, hands down. Galaxy Trucker is just as good..Version: 2.4.1
Best civ-like card game!Love the development of the game, I’ve played countless hours and it never gets old. Hope to see more expansion packs in the future!.Version: 2.1.38
A must have for any board game enthusiastWorth every penny. Great implementation, smooth interface, well thought out. I originally bought it to improve my understanding of the rules for the boardgame. Since then I can vouch for the fact that this game is almost more fun than playing the physical copy..Version: 2.1.27
Can’t get enoughI have been playing for more than a year now. I love it. Cannot wait for the extension to come out soon 👌. I play against my friend online multiplayer. No issue..Version: 1.8.2
Such a great gameThis game is amazing, definitely recommend..Version: 1.8.2
The bestSooo good..Version: 1.8.2
Merci !!!
One of the bestI love this game. It is endless fun, the challenges keep it fresh and entertaining..Version: 1.8.16
Truly excellent adaption of the board gameThe tutorial was perfect..Version: 1.8.16
Awesome!Favourite board game of all time! Can’t recommend it enough!.Version: 1.5.1
Not the rules I rememberI play the original imbalanced version. Though I recognize this to be an improvement, I have yet to see if I will enjoy this. Lots of changes to cards I was not aware of made it so I had to click on everything to read what it does for sure. I think I will enjoy it soon, but I have to see if wars no longer exist. If not this game is not for me!.Version: 1.5.1
FavMy favourite board game on iPad 0 complaints all fun n games!.Version: 1.5.1
Challenging and a FunVery challenging, yet very fun to play. Every game played if different due to the unpredictability of AIs as well as which cards will come next. Absolutely love this game!.Version: 1.5.1
BrilliantOver 30 hours of playing and I'm still getting better and learning - this game does not get old fast. I don't often believe in the hype for a mobile game, I've been disappointed in the past, but this game is a real exception and a real gem..Version: 1.5.1
GoodIt’s a good game. Buy it once play for a long time..Version: 1.5.1
Love It! Absolutely worth the price!I love the Civilization series, but the games take forever and The Mid-Late game can really drag. THIS thing is a breath of fresh air! Through the Ages takes significantly less time while still offering a surprisingly deep strategic experience AND its late game is a highly dynamic sprint to the finish. If you’re like me and you just can’t convince yourself to dive into another 4X style game but still wanna feed that itch, this game is definitely for you..Version: 1.5.1
Wonder...fullTop civilization game!.Version: 1.5.1
Best board game app I’ve playedVery streamlined and awesome for learning the game. Well done..Version: 1.5.1
