Here's a sneak-peak of what you'll find inside:

let the cat out of the bag
Give away a secret, as in "Mom let the cat out of the bag and told us Karen was engaged." This expression alludes to the dishonest practice of a merchant substituting a worthless cat for a valuable pig, which is discovered only when the buyer gets home and opens the bag. [Mid-1700s]

silver lining
An element of hope or a redeeming quality in an otherwise bad situation, as in "The rally had a disappointing turnout, but the silver lining was that those who came pledged a great deal of money." This metaphoric term is a shortening of "Every cloud has a silver lining," in turn derived from John Milton's Comus (1634): "A sable cloud turns forth its silver lining on the night."

a picture is worth a thousand words
A graphic illustration conveys a stronger message than words, as in "The book jacket is a big selling point—one picture is worth a thousand words." This saying was invented by an advertising executive, Fred R. Barnard. To promote his agency's ads he took out an ad in Printer's Ink in 1921 with the headline "One Look Is Worth a Thousand Words" and attributed it to an ancient Japanese philosopher. Six years later he changed it to "Chinese Proverb: One Picture Is Worth Ten Thousand Words," illustrated with some Chinese characters. The attribution in both was invented; Barnard simply believed an Asian origin would give it more credibility.

Idioms and Slang Dictionary Positive Reviews

THE PERFECT APP FOR UNDERSTANDING SLANG WORDS AND PHRASES!!!I’m so glad I ran across this idioms app and I totally love it! Now, I have the complete idioms dictionary right on my phone or tablet at my fingertips. I always refer to the idioms app whenever I need to know the meaning of a slang word or phrase. I love how the definitions are clearly defined and so easy to understand. I plan to use this app for many years to come. Thank you very much for creating this useful idioms app!.Version: 3.5

Very useful for non-native English speakersI have been using idioms and phrases website for a long time and now this app for sometime, precisely, this is a lifesaver app. For every idiom or phrase, it explains the meaning and gives you couple of examples to understand it better. This is the best proven way to learn idioms and phrases if you are a English learner! I will definitely recommend this app..Version: 2.0

Just what I needed!Ever wonder where a phrase came from, and you’ve been saying it all your life, and you don’t even know what it means? This is for you!.Version: 1.7

Good app but needs some workWhat made me want to download this app is that is looked very entertaining and looked like it could help me a lot with idioms. What I liked about this app is that when I wanted to know slang, or he definition of a word it helped me a lot. What I disliked about this app is that when I got to look up a word it either glitches or it pulls up an ad. There was another app I downloaded but it definitely was not as good as this app.!.!..Version: 1.7

Great appI volunteer with ELLs as a conversation partner and I think this app is an excellent tool to level up their English. As a friendly suggestion, maybe have translations of the definitions of the idioms in other languages. Other than that great resource for teaching and learning English..Version: 3.5

Perfect, except it must also be usable offlineI love this app. The only problem is that it won't allow me to access the meanings of most of the phrases and idioms offline. Upgrade the app for total offline use and I'll give it 5 stars..Version: 1.7

Great Learning Modality! This is a great app for curious logophiles with an English mother tongue, especially those who seek to defy our generation's norm of grammatical ignorance and whimsicality as it relates to whipping up new, far-fetched terms and phrases on a very regular basis...Yikes. The app is equally as recommended for those learning English as a second language. There are many idioms on the obscure end of the spectrum to be found in the bank, just as there are many necessary ones to be familiar with; they are all still interesting to peruse. I try to study and really make it a goal to learn one or two new idioms per day. By glancing at a certain idiom (or two) throughout the day, it is more likely to entrench itself in the long-term memory. Also, making it a more leisure, extracurricular activity makes the learning more effective and less likely to be procrastinated. Enjoy the app!.Version: 1.0

IdiomsGreat!!!!.Version: 1.7

Greatest dictionaryLove it absolutely. Must-have application in order to become a intelligent native speakers.Version: 1.0

Less is not moreMy ridiculous fascination with words and idioms was just not satisfied with this app mostly because of the definition usage offered..Version: 1.5

Pretty Good AppIt has proven itself to be a pretty good app so far. The one thing I would suggest they add is the ability to clear previous searches so the search list does not get overly congested..Version: 1.0

FunnyAnswers a lot of questions..Version: 1.0

SuperbFrom a basic to advanced, most idioms are covered..Version: 1.0

Best idioms dict!!Just using it and fall in love with it!!! 👍👍👍.Version: 1.0

Works for me!My first day using it. I’m just reading the list of random idioms on the main page. I think it’s going to be new everyday. I like it, and it’s free so I’m giving 5 stars!.Version: 3.2

Needs workThe app is useful in the sense that it provides the meaning of the phrases, idioms and proverbs. It’s however too basic. It could be interesting to provide info about the origins of the idioms when possible or any contextual or historical info to facilitate understanding. I don’t understand the purpose of the videos; they could be replaced with audio where one can actually hear and learn to enunciate. I am sure that would be useful to non native English speakers. Finally, it a run of the mill app; the user experience could be enhanced. For example once you click on a phrase in the favourites, you cannot go back to the favourites directly. You have to start over and click on the settings to find your way back to the favourites. It would also be interesting to sync favourites across devices..Version: 3.2

I love it .Great job and it's important stuff for my college courses..Version: 1.7

Not good not badUmmm.Version: 1.7
