Textastic Code Editor App Comments & Reviews
Textastic Code Editor Positive Reviews
The Big T application FANTASTICLOVE IT! I am an old mainframe guy, and most of my career I used Xedit. I want to say Kedit was For DOS or Command Line but no GUI. So basically PC based, maybe AIX or Red Hat. Just not sure. My point is Xedit and Kedit were soraly missed. GUI is OK but the dev. For Windows, AIX, or day Redhat stuck to what they knew. Sad. Your T-Rex editor name (I like that better than Textastic name. The other does not sing). I was using NOTES+++ for a while, rich with function, but not intuitive. It would take an investment on time to fully understand. Plus, I really never trusted it. Nothing is Free. How to the get $$. T-isfortext or T-Rex are better names. To the point. I LIKE IT! It’s simple, intuitive, lite-weight, offers numerous function. It’s the closest to a green screen than you can get. The other editor I have is TextEdit and it looks to be very nice. But there is a learning curve and I just cannot spare the time right now. I will sit down with it sooner or later. Wish list. If you could purchase Kedit, not sure it’s avail, and integrate if making it available again would be great. 2 points. (1) you have a really good product with T-Rex (Textastic) do whatever you can to keep quality HIGH. (2) Please Stay far away from subscription base charge back. Do not! Stay away! If you need funds to maintain or grow application, get with me and I’ll propose a model that will do just that..Version: 8.0.1
Makes coding simple on the iPadI spent a long time looking for a good SSH client and text editor for the iPad and was resigned to using sub-par products until I found Textastic. I use it mostly with an iPad Pro, external keyboard, and mouse and it's easier to do coding via SSH on my iPad now than my desktop. I love that I can write markdown, HTML, CSS, Python, or YAML and Textastic handles them all. Even when I don't have my keyboard with me, I am not left without essential keys (hello, esc anyone?) that can be hard to find on the built-in virtual keyboard. Plus function keys!!! OMG. I even use it to write files to Obsidian (markdown) when I'm working and don't want to switch apps. Textastic is super versatile and the developer keeps on making improvements, so it's just getting better. Plus, it's not a subscription and they don't track you or invade your privacy. This is the best text editor on the iPad BAR NONE..Version: 10.5.1
💕 itI love the app so much i signed up for the pro version — even though i was grandfathered in with my prev purchase. There are so many thoughtful touches in the app; i particularly like the option (available in the Apps=>Textastic section of the ios Settings app) to reset open files. This allows idiots to save "oneself" (ie,myself) from some truly egregious regex mishaps. the developer also added the option to disable the annoying "Writing Tools" option from the ios context menu...AWESOME. didn't know how much i needed that. (if the search/replace field remembered ~10 of the most recent inputs, i would die of happiness) The app continues to amaze me with what it can handle; it almost never crashes (even when i blithely ignore its warning re: large files), is super zippy and just a pleasure to use. Buy it, you won't regret it!!.Version: 10.6
I do all my web development in this appYes, I have a Macbook Pro with all the latest web dev tools. But I always have my iPad with me, and I end up doing all my development with Textastic. It has its own local file structure so you can build the server folder and file structure locally and develop with relative links. You can store all the resources (graphics, images, scripts, stylesheets, etc.) in their proper places so the entire site can be uploaded as it exists on the device. My typical workflow starts with Graphic for graphic and image resources, Pixelmator to edit images to size, and Textastic for html, css, and Javascript as needed. iCloud files are synced automatically so I can pick up on any device, and upload to the web host directly from the iCloud directories. This is one of the essential apps that make the iPad so incredibly useful..Version: 6.4.3
YAY!I can’t believe I’m saying this, but JESUS CHRIST is coding easier than I thought on mobile. I’ve been working on the huge project (literally every wakening second of my life) and being able to work on my phone is a godsend. I bought Textastic with the impression of “oh, god…”, but I instead got “yay!” Even transferring files between my Mac and my phone was easy. I thought I would have to lug a flash drive with me, but—nope—Textastic has WebDAV ‘n’ stuff built in. The only negative thing I can come up with is that there isn’t syntax error detection, but considering I did a lot of my coding in TextEdit, I’m used to that already. Thank you!.Version: 10.5.1
Textastic will be improving, and I love that!*update* I am so thrilled about a Test Flight version I received allowing me to set a default overwrite of files for upload/download, and what's better is you can set it for quick transfer or the file transfer windows! This is a HUGE *time saver* and makes me work flow so headache-free. The developer does care.. As you can see I was very upset before:: Previous review: I used to be able to fix the "Error uploading" of the "Transferred a partial file" by simply opening the files that failed to upload. Now, no matter what I try I simply cannot upload certain files or even their parent folder containing them no matter what I try. New “Upload To” feature is appealing, but … Developer absolutely refuses to save you time, forcing you to “confirm” EVERY time you want to upload multiple files. Yet, somehow “upload to” is the only option you’re allowed to disable the dialogue box with. This developer does not care about developing a true Textastic, a great app, but instead an app that only suits their low standards of "good enough". This has to be one of the most obnoxious app developers I have ever had to work with. Textastic has become completely unsable!.Version: 10.1
My Macbook is gathering dustI’m not a developer; I work in email marketing, so my use case is pretty simple and pretty much just consists of building out our content in raw HTML. This app is so simple and straightforward to use that I’ve actually begun doing 100% of my job from my iPad Pro. The times I’ve gone back to the text editor on Mac, I’ve kind of just wished I was using this app instead. Can’t speak to the more advanced features it has but if you just need a quick, simple text editor and are curious about living the iPad life, give it a shot!.Version: 9.9.2
Amazingly Powerful AppI’ve searched high and low for an app like this. For one reason or another, I’d talked myself out of purchasing this, instead choosing to use other apps (that were an absolute waste of money). But finally I decided to try my luck with this, and I can’t stop kicking myself for not choosing this one sooner. It works so well. It’s easy to use, setup. I was up and running in no time. Paired with the iPad magic keyboard, this feels like I’m typing on my old MacBook. Can’t thank the Textastic team enough for developing and maintaining this app!.Version: 9.6.4
The best text edit on iPhone for sure!No words, I use this program over years, it’s simply the best. Easy to access FTP with the phone, transfer files, edit files, just wipe out for example an error on your website immediately on the go. Because I use it over years, I can say the programer is an amazing guy!! He didn’t bring a program to the App Store for a fast money, he’s passionate about it and loves it, there is a regular improvement and development since years! I read the change log from 8.0, and again saw it will be better now than ever before :))).Version: 8.0
I like itIt's a little bit confusing and I think there can be more done with the UI. I do like it though and especially on the iPad. I have yet to hook up a keyboard and I would bet that it really would shine. I am still trying to get it working with Working Copy and once I do I think both will make each other great and my stars will top out. It's mostly for the UI which like I said could be much better but then an app like this is really all about functionality. I think he would get way more downloads if it was pretty. Like most editors are these days..Version: 9.5.1
One of my favorite toolsIn the past several decades I’ve used a wide variety of text editors on all sorts of platforms. Textastic is one of the best I’ve ever used. It works well on all of my devices; it gets used for everything from writing scripts and configuration files to taking down notes. I’m also visually-impaired, and the ability to customize the interface to make it easier to use is extremely helpful. VoiceOver support is fairly solid, and overall it’ easy to navigate the UI. The developers have done a good job and as a result Textastic is well worth the money..Version: 8.1
Mary Poppins of Text EditorsI just mean it’s practically perfect in every way. What’s more, it gets better with every version. The built-in SFTP makes this the perfect companion for web development and countless other tasks. The network storage (including Dropbox) options make it the perfect travel companion for developing pretty much anything. This has more features (and costs far less) than many popular desktop text editors. It’s one of the most useful apps on my iPad and has been for years. I can’t recommend it too highly..Version: 8.0
CapableHands-down the most capable mobile code/text editor I’ve found. Full, flawless regex search/replace is my favorite feature, though I do wish it remembered recent searches; there are a few I’m constantly retyping. The process for editing files stored on Dropbox/GoogleDrive could be smoother, but it does make it very clear what you’re doing. (Once you’ve downloaded a file, any time you open the local copy you can hit Menu, then “upload” or “download latest“, and confirm overwrite.).Version: 9.3
Never underestimate how important a plain text file can beWhen using an iPad Pro as a laptop this app comes in handy. Great for coding with its integration with other Git applications and even for saving plain text files to share between devices. The ability to connect to and edit files over SSH is something you won’t find in a typical text editor. Great for developers and everyday users alike. Been using it on all my iOS and iPadOS devices for years now..Version: 10.5.1
The Dream of a Subscription Text EditorComing from the days where one purchased applications, and purchased subsequent updates outright, always have I longed for a subscription text editor. One that I would purchase repeatedly, regardless of whether or not it had been upgraded, and regardless of whether or not those upgrades applied to me. Well, after many agonizing years, that dream is now a reality. If any application genre screamed out to be a subscription, it is the text editor, what with all of the streaming data they have to provide to the user on a monthly basis. Also, unlike the hordes of starving developers that came before them, these guys finally realized that they could produce a better product if only they could eat every day, while maintaining a roof over their head. This was clearly not possible under the previous scheme, where a product was paid for without further obligation by the customer a/k/a “The Dark Days of Reason”. Instead of laboring under these gulag-esque conditions, the developers of Textastic have finally corrected one of the most grievous injustices since World War Two: the ruthless exploitation of the mobile software developer by the greedy, irrational, demanding customers who constantly demand the the devs fix glaring bugs, while not paying one red scent extra for their fixing. Instead of paying more the buggier an app was, selfish consumers wanted to pay the same price for buggy apps that they paid for more stable apps. This is an abomination that Textastic had the integrity, nay, courage to rectify. In my humble opinion, they have created a dream that you too can live. Go ahead. Push that button in the upper-right corner. Only through your support, will this economic model survive, and relegate to the history books that most heinous of paradigms known as “ownership”. In the future, you will own nothing and be happy. You do not have to wait, though. The future is here today, if only you would click that button. Set yourself free. Do it now..Version: 10.7.1
Great for the niche it fillsIf I need syntax highlighting, this is my go-to app. For composition with reliable and extended undo/redo capability and customization, Drafts is my go-to app. For whatever quirks this app might have, it does not charge me for a subscription, honoring my pro purchase from years ago instead. It's there when I need it, which is only sometimes. I don't use the ftp and ssh parts of the app, so I can't comment on them. I do use iCloud as well as the standard share sheet..Version: 10.8.3
Solid iPad & iPhone dev appI'm not going to list out the features, you can see that on the app product page. I especially enjoy the UI attention to detail, dark mode, icons and connections. I got SSH, GitHub repos, local iCloud files, external iCloud files etc. Simple integratation with apps like Working Copy. Powerful iPhone app with RegEx search and web Preview. All good things. If you need anything this app doesn't have – just use your laptop..Version: 9.8.4
A great application.Something as simple as editing a text file on iOS is impossible unless you have an app like this. That is not a good thing. I just want a simple text editor like Notepad or TextEdit for iOS. Most apps that work with "text" only work if the file actually has a ".txt" extension. I have tons of PLAIN-TEXT files with extensions like .conf or .ovpn or .sh that nothing wants to open. Textastic opens everything just fine..Version: 9.6.4
Great editor. Even greater Xcode alternative for playgrounds.I remember using Textastic before this newer universal app came out, and I fell in love with how amazing the app was. I’ve been using the new version for a while now, and. I am extremely impressed with just how capable this little editor is. It even opens and edits Swift Playground Books, meaning that I can safely and happily cut Xcode out of the Swift Playground book equation. Overall impressed and can’t wait to see what’s in store!.Version: 6.4.2
Wonderful app, couldn’t work without it.I’m iPad only and still build and maintain websites for myself and a few clients. While the workflow is different on iPad, I have been using this app for a long time and I love it. It is very powerful and does exactly what I need for website building/maintenance I do. I have put in a request for PHP rendering and hope this becomes available soon as that would make this app PERFECT! Thank you so much Alexander..Version: 7.1.2
I use this at HarvardAbsolutely worth far more than the ten bucks I paid for this thing. I can now work on my JavaScript and CSS homework assignments on my iPad. Of course my keyboard turns this into a mini-Mac for the most part. But this app makes it all possible. Also, a good app to pair this up with is “Inspect Browser,” since you will need to debug on iOS. I like Brackets for the Mac, but I may check the OS X version of this out since the iOS one is amazing..Version: 7.1
Good Editor & Keyboard/InputClearly very polished, but seemingly so simple, solid, ‘just works,’ that it’s easy not to notice... I’ve never had a problem with the functionality, which is robust beyond my and most uses, but which never seems in the way. I also get used to the special input keys quickly. I’ve used the keyboard onscreen plenty; for me this is at least as natural as typing a document this way. Very nice editor..Version: 7.1.1
6 stars if I couldThe best text editor for your iPhone or iPad hands down. Plenty of features, plenty of customization, great UI, has been in development for years by a responsive developer. What more can you ask for? Pro is well worth every penny paid..Version: 10.8
Great app!Works great! The only thing missing is multi-cursor support. I often use this app when prototyping and mapping out new ideas before i bring them into my VSCode projects. I do recommend using a different browser than the default. The console isn’t very useful for working with large objects. The Inspector browser or something similar works much better. Thanks for making this app!.Version: 9.9.2
Wounderful! But it could be betterI’ve been using this amazing tool a long time ago, to write and edit HTML and CSS files. Love it because uses prediction to increase your productivity and the margin of errors decreases. One thing that I would love to have is a HEX color picker. Than would help immensely. Thank you!!! NOTE: Recently working with -WebKit trying to fixed a navigation menu, it won’t display correctly on the native web browser..Version: 9.6.1
Tons of featuresReally great app. I’ve been using it for web development and every time I google something like “how to open the JavaScript dev console on iPad” I find out that it would have been difficult to do, except for the fact that it’s already included in Textastic. Basically a one stop shop for web dev..Version: 7.0.1
High QualityThis product is amazing. The only thing I would want to see added is native support for connecting to git repositories. This app really gets it right when it comes to editing. Other apps might have more IDE features but I love that the things Textastic does are of an extremely highly quality..Version: 7.0.2
As perfect as it gets on iOSThank you so much for this app! I just can’t say enough about how well executed Textastic is. There are so many wonderful features, and all integrated with so seamlessly. I love all the connectivity options, the innovative keyboard, the previews, and even the surprise terminal emulator. Just a steward tool! I couldn’t be happier. 👍.Version: 8.0.3
Needs ‘files’ supportThis looks like the app of my dreams for further replacing my computer while traveling. One request... instead of Yet Another App Asking For Dropbox Credentials, and yet another file browser, this needs to integrate with the Files app in iOS 11. Apple has solved this problem, and once everything I need supports it, I’ll be happier for the consistency..Version: 6.4.3
Great app ! Love itI found Textastic for IOS is great i’ve Never seen for coding . But still missing some great features. The first I one I would like to see in next update is ONE CLICK UPLOAD. When we edit file in FTP or.... We knew we gonna upload much often so we don't have to click on Share icon and click upload file, that's so annoying! It will be good if quick upload button outside that option. It will be great if we can edit in remote server and save instead of download and edit on local and trip load again. Thank you very much . Anyway great job . :).Version: 7.1.2
For years people have been asking for spellcheck to be enabled.I used to love Textastic, but it is getting stale and long in the tooth. It pales in comparison to editors that I use on other platforms. If you have ever used UltraEdit on Windows, you will know what I am talking about. Textastic has been around for far too long to not get similar features. Especially spell check..Version: 9.4.2
Really great coding experience in iPadosI’ve been using this app for a few months now and have to say that the timely updates as well as all of the features make it really compelling. When iPadOs finally does build in features for developers, textastic will be the clear app for coding..Version: 9.1
Great privacy policyThe privacy policy is clearly worded and respects your information: “Textastic is designed to keep your information private. It does this by collecting as little information and using as few third party services as possible.”.Version: 9.9.2
AWESOME Text Editor for iPad!I used this app to first teach myself programming languages and now use it on the regular for independent projects. It’s great! I do hope that the developer will continue to add additional functions and improvements, but this 5-star review is well-deserved. Textastic is well worth the money. Please keep it up!.Version: 9.4.2
FantasticThis app is super useful as a general purpose text editor. Don’t ever forsake the value of a plain text editor until you find yourself needing one and not having it. This is worth every penny and is perfectly minimal and well implemented..Version: 10.0.3
Well Designed ApplicationThis editor has improved tremendously since it has started. It continues to be well-supported, and follows iOS conventions very well. The user interface is well designed, mouse support is great, and windowing works perfectly. Autosave is also very convenient..Version: 9.2.1
My favorite editor on the App Store!I've used most of the top rated editors on the App Store and this is the one I keep coming back to! Love the ability to connect to my servers and Dropbox. Works great with Apple Keyboard and has some nice keyboard shortcuts. Please add the ability to edit multiple lines at once!.Version: 6.4.1
Almost perfect. Wish it had one more common IDE feature.I really do love this app, but it’s missing one feature that is close to being a deal breaker to me. I wish I could collapse sections between Best support everNot only is the app is well-designed and full featured, but the support is first rate.
I was having trouble getting a particular syntax package installed and working, and the developer kindly took the time to try it out himself, then sent over instructions on how to do the same..Version: 7.1.2 Solve my orgmode problemFinally found an application that work with Google Drive and can view/edit orgmode files.
Alexander is very responsive and solved my questions within 24 hours and followed up with more useful information.
Totally recommended..Version: 7.0.2 I was looking for a GREAT mobile IDEWhile looking for a mobile IDE to perform simple web development I came across Textastic. This simple to use and customizable platform made it easy to access my work from other devices and share easily with co-workers and clients. Just what I was looking for..Version: 6.4.3 Proper detailed updatesKeep up the good work. I appreciate that you do detailed change logs. Apple really should not approve change logs that are “various bug fixes and performance improvements”. Those big developers really need to try again!.Version: 8.0.2 Delivers what is promisesI have used Textastic for years now. It provides a portable and uncluttered tool to edit Markdown and html. I have not been disappointed with it. The developer fixes bugs, maintains it, and provides updates..Version: 9.9.2 Just a Great App!I use it every day as my go to file editor. It never disappoints and is a pleasure to use.
Sometimes I wish it had a built-in Python interpreter, though I realize that might detract from the app’s core mission..Version: 10.5.3 Free International Money Transfer 💸Enjoy high maximum transfers into more than 20 currencies while saving up to 90% over local banks! The cheap, fast way to send money abroad. Free transfer up to 500 USD!Version: 10.9.4
