About Smart Comic Reader (Onne Van Dijk)
How it works:
1. Import any comic into the app.
2. Double tap on a panel and watch the app automatically detect its boundaries and zoom in on it.
3. Tap on the side of the screen to easily move to the next panel. If needed, the app will rotate the comic to make maximum use of your screen space.
============
Smart Reader:
- Automatically zoom in and move between panels for a smooth reading experience.
- Works with any comic, western or manga, no matter the art style. Panels do not need well-defined edges to be detected.
- Always stay in control, let the app guide you over the page while you can always manually zoom and pan.
Comic Collection:
- Import comics from anywhere and organize your comic collection.
- Comics are stored in iCloud to save storage space and keep your collection in sync across devices.
- Your Smart Comic Reader collection is a regular folder on your iCloud Drive that you can access and manage from any iCloud connected device, like a Mac, or a Windows device using iCloud for Windows.
- Also works locally if iCloud is disabled.
- Supports comics in CBZ/ZIP, CBR/RAR and PDF formats.
And many more features to come!

I needed an app to read my offline files in CBZ format but I noticed that the privacy policies of some of the ‘free’ apps out there permit them to share your PII and track what you read. This app claims to not share any data. I like that it can import files from iCloud or OneDrive, and it has worked flawlessly for me so far. It has a neat feature to zoom into the comic panels and can quickly swap left-to-right and vice-versa reading order. The panel zoom is not flawless but works 99% of the time. If i had a complaint it would be that the touch zones to move forward or backward across the pages are not perfect. There is a setting to choose between four options but none of them are exactly what i’d prefer. No matter - it still works well enough.
Smart Comic has everything I want out of a comic reader, auto-syncing through iCloud, iPhone and iPad versions, an easy way to read on iPhone, and an excellent interface design. The smart zoom on panels is fantastic; you can buzz through a page on iPhone. I can’t believe this is free, honestly. The app creator should seriously consider adding new functionality as a premium upgrade because they deserve some compensation for the time they put into this. Auto-sorting and pulling metadata from a comic database would be the only things I can think of to improve upon this one.
The "guided reading" feature is great! I have been looking for an app to read my existing digital comics while on the treadmill. I have my iPad connected to a big screen tv and now I can do one of my favorite things (reading comics) while doing one of my least favorite things (treadmill). I even use Smart Comic Reader with IOS voice control to pan the comic panels with my voice - no touching! Just be careful. My wife recently heard me say, "Swipe left" over and over again for 45 minutes. She said it sounded like I was on Tinder.
This is a fantastic comic reader app. For $2, it handles all my cbr, cbz, and even PDF files perfectly. I use it on my iPad, and the comics I read all look great and feel excellent in terms of the reading experience, as well as actually managing them. I have hundreds of comics, series, & PDFs spread among a dozen folders, all with nested subfolders and this app handles it great. My big problem with a lot of comic reader apps is that they cram themselves full of bespoke functionality and features that result in a worse app experience, often at higher prices. “We have all these features that 1 person might use 1 time, so why don’t we charge $10, $15 or more?” That’s not an issue here. It’s exactly what I wanted at a very low cost. Best $2 I’ve spent in a long time. If you want a way to read comics, books and PDFs that’s streamlined, user-friendly, and not exorbitantly expensive or feature-bloated—this is it.
I’ve tried countless readers out there but none are as nice as SCR. Not only does it accept any format, but it also maintains your precise location without slowing anything down. Its actually my goto for important pdf documents that I want to maintain my place in. I’m studying for my life insurance license and need to be able to pause it like a video game. I can effortlessly pick up exactly where I left off and keep on going. If I want a break I can switch to a comic and relax. Thanks for a wonderful and simple to use reader. It works awesome on my ipad.

I had tried out Panels and found it wouldn’t reliably zoom into individual panels of the comic I had downloaded. I figured it was because the comic was an “older style”, so maybe the less defined panel borders were harder for it to pick up on; I just muscled through. I decided to try this app and lo and behold it immediately did what I wanted, label zoomed into individual panels reliably, in order, and rotated wide panels for optimal viewing. Not to mention it didn’t lag in page transitions. This app is truly the best, it is exactly what I needed, look no further.
This is by far the best comic reader I’ve come across. Well worth the money. Especially if you want to read comics on your phone, you won’t find anything better. It has automatic frame recognition and even has a feature that automatically resizes each frame to be as large as possible on your screen. I really like the option that automatically rotates your screen orientation to maximize each frame. Now I can simply rotate my phone and see each frame vividly. I can finally scroll through a few frames while waiting in line or whatever when I’m out. And I don’t need to lug around my heavy iPad anymore. It has cloud storage so I can pick up from where I left off reading on my iPad at home, read a few frames throughout the day, and return to my current progress when I get back home. Amazing. Thank you to the developers.
It’s been the best comic reader app by far. But I really really REALLY hope the next version will allow me to mark some of the pages that I’d read again and then screenshot them. I’ve updated many times, and I’d feel disappointed each time. Besides, is it possible for me to choose a new word in a panel and translate directly? Now I have to open up a dictionary app and input the word in the dictionary app, which is quite annoying and low efficient. I REALLY look forward to your reply, whether my advice will be taken or not. Best Regards.
I have a huge collection of digital comics I’ve been acquiring from Humble Bundle over the years. Before this app, there was no comfortable way to read them on my phone, since I prefer smaller devices. This app works better than some of the comic readers made by much larger companies. Plus, it doesn’t collect data. What I read stays between me and myself. When I say this is the best comic reader in the store I do not mean that it is the best in its category. I mean it is the best. Full stop.
I normally don't try an app by buying it, since I don't know if I'll end up sticking with it. Even with very inexpensive ones, it can feel bad to drop money on something I'll end up discarding. Like buying a new soda and realizing you dislike the taste. However, I decided to give this one a try after being dissatisfied with other free comic readers, and after spending some time with it, I think it's well worth the small price. Firstly, it works great with the native Files app. At first I didn't think it would since it wanted to use iCloud, which I was very against because I have limited cellular data and I wouldn't want to burn that on syncing comics. However, it was very easy to disable this option, which in turn allowed the app to use Files instead, having a special folder for this app. Moving my cbz/cbr files to this folder was a breeze after that. Secondly, the focus-on-panels feature is practically perfect. I don't know yet how it will handle more stylistic comics, but I've been using it primarily to reread old newspaper comics like "Calvin and Hobbes" and "Foxtrot" and it zooms onto each individual panel nearly perfectly every single time. I did have to teach myself to tap instead of swipe to go from each panel but once I did it was easy. And lastly, the auto-rotate is extremely useful. It also took some getting used to since it doesn't technically rotate your device screen (so you might drag on the wrong area trying to leave the app or open the control center) but it works very well for adapting panels to your screen and can be disabled if you don't want to use it. The only thing I'd like to see is a quick way to toggle that setting while reading a comic, so it's not necessary to exit Focus and exit the comic in order to do so. Having the option to force portrait or landscape regardless of the device's current orientation could be useful as well. All in all, it's a great app for reading comics on a small phone screen, and I'm glad I decided to give it a chance. I don't see me uninstalling this app anytime soon, and it's great to pop in and out of a comic book to pass time when I'm unwinding before bed or waiting in a grocery store line.
This is a really nice app and quite unique. Panel by panel navigation makes reading comics on the phone and other small screens possible. My only quibble, if I have one at all, is that the double page view doesn’t allow me to shuffle the left and right pages. Sometimes the spreads are out of order. Controlling whether the book starts on a recto or verso, like Acrobat Reader does, would really make this program perfect.
As someone who’s been reading comics digitally for a decade now. The ability to use panel-to-panel reading with your own comics is huge! I can’t even express how much I’m loving this app. I always wished that this technology existed and to randomly stumble on this app a few days ago and discover that we have already arrived in this amazing future… my mind was blown. So happy with it. Honestly the happiest I’ve ever been with a new app.
Does everything you would want. Double page when in horizontal view, zoom mode that follows from panel to panel. Continues to the next comic in a series folder without having to leave the current comic . It also does a reasonable job of folder management, my only suggestion would be the ability to attach thumbnails to folders so it isn’t as visually jarring from single issues. But overall fantastic app.
Hello again. I recently posted a review saying that the new update didn’t work. I want to apologize and let you know just in case others have the same issue. I deleted the app, then I reinstalled it and it works fine. I see and like the improvements. I think it is actually faster and more responsive. Thank you so much for your hard work.
I have used many CBR readers in the last few years. Some good, some bad, some just okay. This has everything that I need. It’s perfect for on the go reading on your phone due to its smart panel feature which I love so much. That’s what I have been looking for all this time. Also, it offers a great UI for organizing and browsing through a collection.
The nicest thing about this comic reader is that I don’t notice it when I’m reading comics. The import process is seamless. It automatically sorts the comics by issue number, even if you import them in a different order, and when you complete a comic it lets you go right into the next one. This is how comic readers should work. Simple, easy, and effective.
The app is great. I love that I put make collections within collections so my library doesn’t become convoluted with spin-offs and tie-ins. The panel by panel navigation is broken, however. Makes it difficult to read on a phone. The error I’m getting is “Error detecting panels. Unable to load model” followed by what looks like a directory location. I’m happy to send a screenshot if there is an email I can use for you. Thanks!
1. Add support for syncing with other cloud storage solutions for us who use OneDrive, Dropbox etc. 2. Add an option when viewing panel by panel to show the whole page when you first open it, and the option to show the whole page after the last panel on a page.
It’s simple and makes it easier to organize the books on my phone. Love that it zooms in on frames. However I’d love to see more customization added into the future. Would love to see more options for horizontal reading to stay zoomed in while flipping pages, and options to read comics vertically by scrolling up as well; (WEBTOON style comics). I’ll be using this app for a long time.
Literally tried all of the comic readers even spent money trying to find the best one. Whether you have an iPhone or iPad this app works for them all gloriously. I use the cloud backup which 10/10 the best. I love every feature this app currently has and just upgraded to 120FPS, so thankful for this!
I really like the app, it’s miles away from the competition. The only thing missing for me (and I don’t know if there’s some way of doing it and I haven’t figured it out) it’s the ability to move folders inside other folders so I can get everything in order. But that’s the only thing so far that bugged me.
Is a really good reader, is fast so i can transfers tons of comics at once through itunes and has complete iCloud integration which makes transfers really comfortable. the only thing i see missing is the ability to reorder comics manually. right now they only rearrange themselves in alphabetical order which can be a pain if you need to read more than one comic in sequence
I like to read fleetway sonic comics online. It’s convenient, but some of the page is usually not readable. THIS is where this amazing app comes to use. It supports cbr, cbz, and best of all, Pdf files. I can read comics clearly without any struggle easily. This is the best comic reader for ios, and I definitely recommend it.
The algorithm or AI or whatever that powers this app is genuinely impressive. It will even recognize panels within panels and so far hasn’t gotten the order wrong on me. As a 13 Mini owner I really appreciate this app- gone are the days of awkwardly scrolling around zoomed in pages. Reading comics at work will never be the same!
The interface is simple and easy to use. No ads. Auto sync with iCloud. This is the only app you’ll need if you use iCloud. If I can ask for one thing, I wish the files and folders weren’t separated but listed in order by name mixed.
I have all my of digital manga backed up as .CBZ files and this does an awesome job of importing through iCloud files. If the developer wanted to make a premium paid version (one time fee NOT subscription) for a few extra features, I’d happily throw some money to support.
The app is clean, follows Apple’s design guidelines, and feels like it was written in SwiftUI, but the most impressive part is the smart panel zoom feature. It’s actually really, really good. The animations switching from panel to panel add some extra drama to the experience. Hard to explain, but it elevates the experience.
It zooms in automatically and you can scroll through the panels. You won’t have to squint your eyes or manually zoom in to read the text. The only app that does this so far. I just wish I could turn off the rotate feature
Thank you for this wonderful app. Its minimal design and seamless performance make it one of the best app for iPad. *** I have a request from you. Can you add Live Text feature to it? It would be helpful for using dictionary during reading comics. ***
Ive been reading comics on my ipad for years using various cbr readers and this is the one that finally meets the mark and fulfills all my prerequisites for a great comic reader. Excellent! Im surprised at how under the radar it is, this deserves to be the number 1 comic reader on the app store!
Flawless integration and synch across devices, easily detects panels, intuitive and easy to use and taps into your cloud for comics. No crashing. What more could I ask and much fairer priced than other inferior Comic reading apps.
Amazing job, only thing I can ask for is native Google Drive support with the ability to directly “stream” comics instead of importing and downloading. Will definitely pay and support you for that
Wish ratings had decimals so I could give it a 4.5/5 or heck, even a 4.9/5. This app is AWESOME! The UI is great, very minimal and clean. The panel-to-panel reading is so cool and I love how it integrates with iCloud so you can pick up your reading on other devices. If other services get supported like Google Drive, this will be a 5/5. Great job!
It really works, I’m very impressed that it can detect the panels with ease. I tried the Kich more expensive panels app and this one is WAY better. Zero effort with zooming in, it just works. Great job making this app, it brings my old comics to life!
This is your best option for reading comics on an iPad or iPhone. The iCloud integration is really good. Turning pages & zooming in & out of panel to panel viewing is intuitive. If you have a bunch of books formatted as CBR or CBZ this is a nobrainer.
Can you add page animations please? Also, the ability to change the background from black to white while reading? Thank you.
Simple and to the point. I love it. It would be nice if it supported OPDS, but they give access to files so thats still really simple. Feels really good to use. Would highly recommend
LOVING your app so far. Best option is it created folders with my PD comics on my iCloud DRIVE & it syncs both ways. (NO other app does this)... Drop PDF in App & it uploaded to comic folder on iCloud Drive. Dropped PDF Comic in iCloud Drive folder & it sync’d automatically into my app.., Would like to see option within my collections folders to see a LIST view that would show more of the title name with a smaller view of the cover. Keep up the great work...
I’ve tried several iPad comic readers and this one is the best. The panel to panel reading works better really well. I wish that the Marvel Unlimited reader worked as well as this one.
This is my go to app for all my comic reading. Easy to navigate either full page or by panel. The interface is non-intrusive and so simple but elegant.
This has everything the others do not. Good file management, full resolution with no downsampling or downscaling, Split View on iPad, etc. Worth every penny!
Why isn’t every comic reader like this? Why is this app free? Why isn’t everyone using it? Why can’t I pay a one-time fee for OPDS import?
Limited ads, perfectly smooth scrolling and detecting panels, unlike any other comic reading app I’ve used.
The auto panel detection has been really good so far. Currently reading comics from the 60s with more strict panels. Will update when I get into more modern comics with more complex panels.
Love this app and I use it e very day on my commute. My only “Feature Request” would be the ability to import whole folders. Other than that 5 stars!!
App is butter. Super satisfying to read comics with. Love the iCloud sync and easy to import for offline viewing. How is this free?? Thank you! Please add ability to manually arrange order, and also a tip jar.
Very glad I took a chance on buying this. Works like a charm for reading manga on iPhone. It goes panel by panel rather than page by page so it’s even easier to read than a physical copy.
This app is phenomenal — its panel detection alone is worth the price of admission. Great library as well, with collections made super-easy and a great search function. Two things prevent it from being perfect; can’t adjust the cover size in grid view, and for some reason you can’t easily exit out of “panel view” to go back to the Gallery. You have to close it and open it again — at least on the Mac — not iOS. Fix those two things and it will be perfect.
Suits my needs perfectly - privacy respecting - smart panel zooming works very well on my iPad Air - navigation is natural - supports iCloud sync My wishlist - more cloud and network sync options
So basically if there was feature like panel where you could zoom in with just holding your finger long enough like panels comic reader then it would be fantastic because comics don’t work with smart zoom it doesn’t follow comic orientation. Like just please add zoom with long press and we could tweak how much zoom for more personal experience. And widgets so that i can jump straight from my Lock Screen to my comic or manga. Please add zoom in with one finger this would then be the best reader for comics and manga and widgets
I love this comic reader. I have another, more popular one, but this one is more enjoyable to use. I think part of that reason is because of its native feel and how simple it is to use and understand. Also, its panel-by-panel reading mode is fantastic, especially for smaller devices. My only suggestion for this app would be to allow saving bookmarks. Sometimes, I want to jump to a different page and jump back. The Kindle app has a pretty helpful way of doing this (in addition to saving bookmarks). I'd love it if this app could offer the same functionality. Otherwise, it's a great app! Thank you!
This app has the best guided view (panel-by-panel mode) of all comic readers on iOS. Local file management is simple and the UI is smooth. Developer deserves kudos for offering this to the community free. You rock!
Great app but we need a vertical reading mode for webtoons
It may not be free like before but $2 Canadian is a good price for what your getting. No subscription and a great UI With simple and straightforward way to load your own CBR/CBZ files. I wish I had known about this when it was free but the price isn’t bad either.
This is the best free, clean app I have ever used for reading my offline collection. Big thanks to the developer. SUGGESTION: there is no vertical reading direction to read web toon. Can you please please add that feature. :)
Just want to thank the creators of this wonderful app and thanks for making free and better than all the other apps out there.
Can’t believe it’s free. Fast, intuitive, smart panels. Hands down the best comics reader I’ve used. Kudos to developer. I would pay for this guys.
Great app! Just one thing, can we get a full screen landscape option? Similar to MU or DCUI where you one page fits the whole screen and you can scroll down the page.
Can’t believe it’s 100% free too!
This app is by far the best comic book reader I’ve had. I’ve tried popular apps like Panels,MangaReader and Comic Book Reader, but this app is so smooth and clean. The fact that it’s free and you can easily put files from your iTunes to iPhone. The app is perfect exactly what I needed and I can read double page manga better then other apps. Overall 5/5 I have no idea what else to say about this great app.
Wow just wow! Smart as in tapping the screen, walks through the comic book for you! This is incredible! And fully free! This is next level app. Thank you so much devs!
I was about to give up searching in the App Store and online to find a great comic reader. Luckily found this amazing app. It has an awesome reading experience for smaller screens. Chunky app is only available for the iPad. Was trying to find an alternative for the iPhone. This is by far the best. ComiXology is amazing viewing experience. But this is almost as good for using your own comic library. Can’t believe it’s free. Very impressed.
Smart Comic Reader Negative Reviews and Ratings
For some reason, new downloaded comics can’t be opened in Chunky, so didn’t wanna pay for another comic reader, so found this. No brightness options or automatically grouping by title or author, but could live with those. However, simple page turning is REALLY CUMBERSOME. You can’t page turn by a simple swipe as in Chunky, have to tap. Worse, unless you like reading only in the default zoom percentage, the tap won’t work. After having to zoom and zoom out for every page after just one issue, I’m done. Wasted hours downloading new comics. You get what you pay for
Smart Comic Reader’s edge selection enhances the reading experience for local and iCloud comics, seamlessly transitioning between panels. However, the app falls short in modern features. It lacks integration with other cloud providers (like Dropbox), requires manual file management for each individual comic file (except for the local and iCloud folders), and heavily relies on the Apple ecosystem. While great for some, it may not suit everyone’s needs.
This was my go to app for so long. It was incredible and has all the features you could need. But I recently opened it to find that, without warning, it deleted my entire collection. Every last comic, gone. I went through a long and painstaking process of getting them organized and in chronological order, as well as separated into different collections by series, and now all of that is gone. Won’t be relying on this app again.
I thought this would’ve been a good app like the reviews are making it seem; however after installing and uploading comics to it does it make my iPad unresponsive, freezing, slowing everything down. Don’t even waste your $2 on this.
For a paid app, it definitely is disappointing. It lacks some of the basic features relating to importing using OPDS or better ways to import and view your collection. Importing a large library will crash the app where the storage space will be used but the library will be empty. Clearly the devs did not test the app thoroughly. For what it's worth, I use an iPhone 14 Pro Max and I was trying to import 7GBs of data at once split in 50ish volumes. The smart zoom feature is nothing to write home about either, especially for comic books that will alternative between the layout of each block. You will need to flip your phone constantly and locking the screen orientation simply defeats the whole purpose. There are better apps out there, both paid and free options. I regret my purchase and would definitely not recommend for the time being. Not having the ability to try the app prior to purchase is pretty telling.
