PressReader: News & Magazines App Comments & Reviews

PressReader: News & Magazines Positive Reviews

A fine newspaper reading tool that needs improvementThe pleasure of electronically reading the newspaper in the paper form laid out by the editors with zooming and links to articles cannot be understated. It works wonderfully with smartphones and computers with pads that permit control with finger movement. It’s the closest one can get to having the actual newspaper replicated in your computer. PressReader still needs to improve the dependability of links jumping to articles and sections of the paper. This function does not always work. It could also be improved with an efficient search tool for finding articles and subjects. One final note. There are no obvious instructions for setting up the app, and using all the available tools. This is a failure of communication all too common today..Version: 5.7.7

Not. That. Great.I am not impressed with this app at all. It just makes things that should be straightforward and easy unnecessarily difficult. I do a search on a new device for a periodical I have been receiving for years on an older one, and the search turns up nothing. I wish to de-authorize one device so that I can authorize another and I can’t do that without getting tech support from my organization (the website won’t let me sign in on my computer so I can do so myself. Instead it tells me that my email and/or password are “incorrect” - which they are not). Just a bunch of unnecessarily complicated nonsense! Also, the app has an icon badge which is not self-explanatory. I wish I knew what it signified. Is it the number of periodicals I am supposed to receive (because that does not seem accurate)? The number of issues available for download? (because that doesn’t seem accurate either). What?! I tried opening all my periodicals to see if that would get the icon to it would go away or change, but it didn't. So an explanation of its significance would be nice. With many publications piling up I would appreciate a feature that could instantly put them in chronological order, for finding issues more easily, but there doesn’t seem to be such a feature. Honestly, if I did not need to use this app out of necessity, I would have deleted it long ago..Version: 5.3.8

Messing up a useful appsThe latest changes are abysmal. You can’t go back to main screen and browse or scroll through publications, anymore. You must select your publications when you reload the apps. As premium customer who considers this apps inconsequential but very useful you’ve messed up the platform. Developers should be fired after the latest November 2020 update! I’ve ended my subscription! Update: Worked with Developer to solve issue. Developer gave a version # indicating apps was supposedly fixed. Version update only works when the apps has been closed and phone is rebooted. This isn’t a fix it’s a work around. Perhaps company should invest in better Developers. Nice, you finally fixed the Apps, I am happy again!!!!.Version: 6.3.4

Latest update doesn’t workToday is Saturday April 18th. The new update downloaded last night. It opens to old, already deleted versions of the New York Times. The browse catalog wont load completely. It is impossible to load the New York Times digital edition. There is no way to contact the company through the app. Why in the world would you post a new version on a weekend, when you are in the worst position to fix bugs. PressReader, as a product, is solid when it works. Unfortunately, too often, bugs pop up, and there is no way to remedy the situation. I wish that the major publications would field their own replica apps or force better quality control over PressReader. Very sloppy and disappointing..Version: 5.7.2

NY TimesI have been a loyal NY Times reader for 4 decades. Living remotely, I am only able to get a subscription via PressReader. Sorry, but I feel that the system works better for PressReader Incorporated than for its subscribers. I have recently spent a full half day renewing my subscription as my credit card on file had expired. PressReader deleted my account at the stroke of midnight when my yearly subscription expired and I was online and on the phone for 5 hours to become recognized as a subscriber and become reinstated with my updated payment information. Was there an email updating me of the impending end of my subscription? Nope. Wake up PressReader you are a service industry and we are your clients! I have already noted my renewal date in 364 days in my 2020 calendar..Version: 5.6.1

An amazing source of reading, but not only!My access to all possible world press became instant, my opinions became influential, my channel is growing and developing super fast. Three great features I’ve never seen before but always dreamed of: real time Translation (you don’t need 3rd party anymore) - very convenient - just imagine you can read any language! (Italian Vogue is not longer Italian) Then you don’t even have to read, Voice Reader can do it aloud. And finally the Boomarks! (I still have those thousands of heavy folders I used put teared magazine pages in from my student years). The app delivers the fresh issues of all I read right to my account. I’m shocked! I’m in future!.Version: 5.3.3

Worst update everThe app no longer works smoothly and i hate the black background with no way to find how to v Change it. Scrolling through the thumbnails and tapping on the page you want to read doesn’t work. The only way to get to that page if you scroll to the next page and then scroll back. Why did you change a good thing? Also the setting for automatic download doesn’t automatically stay on. What the heck? Having little control to customize the app is very frustrating. I used to love this app..Version: 6.1.1

FABULOUS TO HAVE NEWS ON IPADThis is the greatest app! I get to see my NY Newspaper while I live in Florida. I can see any paper from all over the world! It’s ready by 5:30am and I don’t have to go outside to my driveway to get the paper... wet or dry! I don’t have to deal with the newspaper print that I’m allergic to. And I don’t have to throw the paper away at the end of the day! Also, I can save papers on my iPad or iPhone and see my favorite stories or articles whenever I want. It’s just FABULOUS! And the price cannot be beat!!! Get this Press Reader app ASAP!!!.Version: 5.3.6

Great reading, data hogI love reading newspapers in their original format on PressReader. I have a subscription to one paper and access to hundreds of papers through my local library, and both log-ins work seamlessly together. PressReader has improved to near-perfect status over the years but one flaw remains: despite my efforts to clear out old editions, the size of my data files grows until it chokes my iPad. Recently I had to once again delete and reinstall the app after it reached over 7GB of content. I don’t know what is causing this as I don’t see any stash of available newspapers in any archive. Otherwise, I’m very happy as a long-time user..Version: 5.5

A wonderful resource in these crazy timesPressReader is a great app that I frequently forget about and then promptly return to, but also one that I really wish I could work into my daily and nightly routines. One major thing that keeps me from doing so is the lack of a dark mode. I’d like to take an hour to get away from the bright, loud, chaotic world and relax with my favourite magazine, ‘Deutsch perfekt’, before bedtime; however, there’s entirely nothing relaxing about having to read dark text on the glaringly white screen of my iPad. If the PressReader team could figure out how to invert text whilst keeping the design and images of the magazine or newspaper largely intact, that would be greatly appreciated!.Version: 5.7.7

Press ReaderI have to revise my previous review because the latest version is not stable. The blue hyperlink to enlarge an article only works on select articles and crashes the program on others. Repeated requests to customer service have not solved the total problem. They now seem to have fixed the front page of the NY Times but not inner pages like the Opinion page. PLEASE FIX! Finally fixed! Now works well on my iPad Pro 10.5 inch screen. I would like to add my frustration to the other NY Times reader reviews. The Press Reader column on the left cuts off NY Times columns and requires ridiculous slide and hold maneuvers to read the paper. I don't understand why the reading experience got worse with this update. Please fix. Press Reader has a problem with the new iPad Pro 10.5 inch screen. It provides partial columns which require sliding and holding to read some columns. This was reported weeks ago and still not fixed..Version: 5.2.3

Good. It could be betterI read the N.Y. Times almost daily as I travel a lot. I actually like reading on PressReader better than the actual paper. The photos are better, and you can jump to continuation pages easily, and back, sometimes. Unfortunately with the Times at least, links are missing at times. That might be NYT’s fault? Navigating with the gizmo on the bottom of the screen is tedious. A drop down list would be better. Also missing is a “back” button. I wish I could just go back to the previous page I was on like in every other reading app I have used. Finally, it seems that if an update comes down to an issue or supplement while you are reading it, the app pops up an annoying sidebar and sometime takes you back to the top of the page or the first page...very annoying. They should just put up an icon to notify you. But overall I like it. I use a different one for the Vail Daily and I like this one better..Version: 5.5

Great, except for one bugPress Reader is a wonderful way to read the New York Times. In fact, I prefer it over the print edition. Being able to “jump” to the continuation of articles is much, much easier than leafing through paper pages. The only gripe I have is when a side panel pops up on the left side at random and unpredictable times, and I have no way to get rid of it besides closing the app and restarting. Grrrrr… Other than that, I love it..Version: 6.3.5

Want to identify a bugIt’s a great app and very convenient to use. The only thing I need to identify is the auto download function does not properly work on iPad on few of the newspapers and magazines. I have experienced that the auto download reset itself when it’s time for next issue arrives and as such fail to work. The problem I experienced is with Washington post and Newsweek international. It works fine with other newspapers and magazines that I regularly download using the auto download function. Good luck.Version: 6.3.5

Love the app but BIG problems with this update!Big problems with this update! I love the app and have used it for years, but now (1) the drop-down menu that shows table of contents completely blacks out and freezes the screen! (2) From the main screen, the little “More” menu is blank (“...” at lower right corner of screen)! (3) From the page preview display, the little vertical ellipsis at the bottom of the screen also brings up a completely blank menu! Please help!.Version: 5.4.1

My newspaper doesn’t load...I have a premium subscription that is complimentary through my work. I use the app for The Denver Post. The paper is uploaded 2 to 3 times a week, so I’m missing the paper most days of the week. I would love to use and PAY several hundred dollars a year for this app if the paper would consistently load. As it is now I can see it would only be a frustration and a waste of money as it s now..Version: 5.7.6

Closest thing to reading the actual print edition of the New York TimesThere is something that I really like about the layout of an actual newspaper. Using Pressreader to download the print edition of the New York Times is the closest thing I found to actually reading the newspaper. The best thing is that I don’t have to go to the newsstand or open my front door to get the paper delivered; I can find it in the app first thing in the morning..Version: 6.4.1

Downloads are lateI love having the paper at my fingertips when I wake up. But sometimes the downloads are late, as is the delivery of my paper copy, and then I have NO paper at all. Otherwise, I think PressReader is great. September 13, 2017 Got my NY Times on my iPhone today but it will not download on my iPad. February 25, 2018 Still getting downloads late. Also, not able to access any saved articles. March 20, Still not seeing saved articles in My Collections..Version: 5.2.7

Love this appI use this app to read newspaper through my library account. For years it worked perfectly until about couple weeks ago. Now it asks me to pay for the subscription. The library account sign in seems not working any more. Hope this issue will be resolved soon. But I do want to say it has been a great service for me. Thank you..Version: 6.4.2

Great program, but needs Archiveability and HighlightsEverything about this program is great except for two things. 1) If you switch phones or tablet, you lose all your publications. This ignores a large portion of the users who intend to study and reference the material over time. 2) It does not allow the ability to highlight the material or take notes in those sections. The only notes section is for public commentary, which is a different purpose. If we pay for the publication, we should be able to keep it forever and highlight it and do what we need to do with it. Being in the digital world is nice because you can search many publications for keywords, but without the ability to archive what is the point?.Version: 5.5

Almost there!Generally it’s a good app. My only problem is that there is the option to save pages to your collections, yet there is absolutely no way to actually access them?? I’m guessing this is a glitch or something. Would definitely be 5 stars if this was fixed. For anyone else that needs this feature, the workaround that I’ve been doing is taking screenshots then cropping out the top and bottom so it shows just that page..Version: 5.2

Mostly good but sometimes skips issuesThe interface and image quality are great, as is the selection of different publications from around the world. However, I have noticed that sometimes issues just get “skipped”. For example, with my New York Times Home Delivery subscription, and also The Week magazine is another example where I have noticed this..Version: 5.7.1

Love Press ReaderThank you for fixing Press Reader battery drain issue on iPad Mini. Use to run down the battery in about 3 hours of Press Reader use. Now it drains at a normal rate. Actually just about every bug has been resolved. Now the latest revision is almost perfect. Please leave it as is. The old saying If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it would apply..Version: 6.4

A must have for the TravelerThis app is a must-have for anybody that travels the off-line mode is fantastic cover to cover on reading magazines & your favorite newspapers couldn’t live without it. Only downside is the automatic subscription and download is limited if you want additional titles you have to download them by hand on a daily basis..Version: 6.4

Press ReaderPress Reader is an excellent substitute for the printed paper. I love that it is identical to the print edition. Because of that I KNOW that I’m not missing anything. It is as easy to navigate as the printed paper and maybe better because one can enlarge the print. I wish one could email an article from it but you can’t. If one could it would be perfect. Louise Orkin.Version: 5.3.1

I love this AppWhen I first subscribed to nyp wasnt sure why I was using PressReader but then I tried reading other magazines and I realized nyp was partnered with them to e-read to me and I was shocked but just a long time ago I have started my seven day trial signed up and monitor I will budget the PressReader service when I need it. 100 💯 percent recommend.Version: 6.4.10

Works great but no family sharing.Just like the iPad and iPhone apps, this just works. I've been a pay-as-you-go and Hotspot Hog for at least five years. Finally tried the all-you-can-eat trial and I'm hooked. I just wish they supported family users with seperate profiles so my wife and I can share and still be under the five device limit..Version: 6.8.2

New version is totally hosed - fixedPrior version had flaws but basically worked. New version just shows blank screens, no search results and signon is broken. Get better programmers and do much better testing. Avoid this release at all costs. Update: rapid response from developer. Apparently app failed but websites were working. No further explanation but at least it works fine now..Version: 5.7.2

Good Reader, Annoying PopupIt’s a nice reader for publications. But when I try to screen mirror from my iPhone or iPad to Apple TV for better readability, the app thinks I’m taking a screenshot and keeps popping up an alert. Some publications don’t even display when screen mirroring. Please fix this annoying bug..Version: 6.4.1

Slow response, hard to understand interfaceThe newspaper is a good replica of the real thing. But how do you get that image.- hard to figure out. Too many clicks to get to today’s paper. Needs to be made more intuitive and to go right to the front page of your preferred publication when you open the app. The Phila Inquirer replica edition does just that,.Version: 5.7.1

So far, so good!At the risk of jinxing this app, PressReader seems to have hit a nice plateau...works well on current and not so current hardware running up to date iOS. I personally have no complaints and wonder which iPad and what iOS the folks are running who are upset. Backwards compatibility is hard to guarantee in a rapidly changing competitive electronics era..Version: 5.2.2

My Favorite AppI read the New York Times every morning on Press Reader and really enjoy the look of the actual newspaper without having to recycle the physical paper. It is great for traveling, too, as there are no worries about suspending delivery, and you can read it on your iPad when you are in Cancun with Ted Cruz..Version: 6.3.1

Fifty-fiftyI love this app, but wish it were more stable. I spend as much time deleting/reinstalling and troubleshooting as I do actually reading. For what it’s worth, this wonderful product always works on my Mac desktop, but it’s extremely problematic on my iPhone and iPad..Version: 6.4.2

Near-perfectI love this app. As a journalism professor, I know that the best way to follow news is by reading an actual newspaper cover to cover (as opposed to a web site or social media). Two minor suggestions for improvement: 1. Convince more publications to participate. For instance, there’s not a single Vermont newspaper available. 2. In the download section, please provide the dates of the publications. Thanks for this app. And especially a huge thanks to participating publications. It is such an important resource. Update: the issue date is NOT listed below the name of publication at the bottom of thumbnail on Downloaded tab. That was my point. I’m happy to send a screen shot.`.Version: 6.3.6

Buggy App, 100% Unusable, Great ServiceApp often doesn’t work, great when it does. Other times it just keeps endless less scrolling itself page to page as slide overs. Used to work. Doesn’t anymore, and hasn’t in many months. I would be willing to submit logs. Not sure how to enable them for the app though. Issue is easily reproducible..Version: 6.3.1

Overall a great program.I love being able to read newspapers in the true format It works extremely well on my iPad but not as perfectly on my PC. I have the downloaded NY Times that will tend to freeze while reading and then turning the pages. I will then have to reopen the app and find the page where I was last reading.Version: 5.7.1

Press reader app is excellentI've been using the app for about three or four years. It's very easy to download the paper and once downloaded, it is very easy to navigate through the options. I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a lot on the go..Version: 5.2.5

V6.2 is great improvement Thank YouThanks for addressing issues with the 6.2 update. Much improved reading experience. Your app is great! Addressing some of the annoying little quirks with this update makes it that much better. Keep up the good work. I primarily use an iPad mini with your app.Version: 6.2

Enjoy the NYTimesBest service for replica Times. We live too remote for home delivery. This is the next best thing to spreading the Times out the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. If a glitch occurs, customer service is quick to a fix. In all a valuable and excellent service..Version: 6.4.10

Useful but frustratingly buggyI use Pressreader on my iPad solely to read the digital replica of the NYT. The app frequently crashes, frequently mis-displays pages and frequently gets stuck in a funk and needs to be returned home and then re-navigate to your page to display and function properly. The NYT disallows selection and dictionary lookup - but that is not Pressreaders fault. Would also like it to zoom in farther. I am not a fan..Version: 5.4.3

Doesn't work wellI read the New York Times on this app. However, there are blue highlights on the headlines which are supposed to bring the article into a column for reading like a book. Today they don't bring in text. And other days they are not even there. Can't compete with the Washington Post Working better.Version: 6.1.1

OKI’m a new user. This app gave me access to the article I wanted to read. However, I found it very odd that I had to read it it like I was looking at a picture of the actual printed newspapers page. So, I cannot just search for a keyword, only for magazines, and then I have to know which date my article was published next issue is not all papers are included. and there isn’t a way to suggest new magazines as dar as I can see. I’m still an “unregistered” user even though I’m a subscriber and nowhere does it say the benefit of registration so looking for scientific magazines (I had Quanta Magazine in mind describing quantum phenomena to the public) or medical journals (Like Journal of Alzheimer’s disease) will not be fruitful.Version: 5.4.3

Cannot get current editionFor quite a while i could get yesterday edition, or todays, depending where I clicked. Now I can only get editions 3 days old. This is for the San Jose Mercury news. So now I switched to another newspaper of another city and get current edition..Version: 5.7.4

NYT issueWhy I need to use PressReader is a mystery to me. I use it to read the New York Times print edition. It works just fine but I think the New York Times should give me the ability to read their paper without a separate subscription to PressReader. Press reader doesn’t count as an NYT subscription so links from other news sources to a NYT article will not work.Version: 6.3.6

The best once moreThe glitch with downloads has been fixed, and the new dark mode and layout are beautiful. Once again the best way to read newspapers from around the world. Thank you!.Version: 6.1.1

Press Reader for NewspaperPress Reader is so much better than the newspaper’s own site. Zooming and flipping pages much easier and faster..Version: 5.5

New update is garbageThe new update that was supposed to fix bugs just made it impossible to open my subscribed papers. Looking for a new app.Version: 6.6.3

Trop cherBon produit, mais trop cher.Version: 6.3.2

Do not like recent updateI’ve been using PressReader for a few years now, and in general I love it. The most recent update is irritating me though, as it is now limiting the number of screenshots that I can take in a magazine or newspaper. I get that some people may be abusing this, and I understand the warning, however there is an assumption that anyone taking screenshots is abusing the magazine, when I am doing it for my own personal use. For example, I recently decided to try cross stitching as something new to do during the pandemic. I downloaded a cross stitch magazine, chose a pattern to try, then took screenshots of the design so that I could send it to my computer to print (I cannot print directly from the iPad). I got the pattern, but I can’t get the instructions! The iPad screen is too small for me to work from, not to mention that the screen keeps blacking out, so I guess I will not be doing the cross stitch. I have also used screenshots to print recipes so that I can cook them, and even to take screen shots of book recommendations or ads of things that I want to purchase. I do understand that some people abuse these things, but don’t treat us all as abusers. Besides, I am sure that the true abusers will find a way around this soon enough, so only the legitimate users will be inconvenienced. If I bought a paper copy of the magazine I could copy it and distribute it, tear pages out to keep, etc. I will have to seriously rethink using pressreader if this continues. Thank you for the response. Can I suggest an alternative of adding a unique hidden digital identifier to the screenshot that lets you know which account it came from? That way legitimate users are not inconvenienced, but you will actually be able to track down abusers if they distribute their screenshots. Meanwhile, I read my favourite cooking magazine last night, and I have seven recipes I want to try but can only print 3 of them....Version: 5.7.4

Version 5.4.1Version 5.4.1 Full Screen off is now back again but still problems. The developers of PressReader have never given much consideration to accessibility for VoiceOver users. Now in the latest version, 5.4.1, they have reinstated the ability to turn Full Screen off again giving VoiceOver users the ability to access the menus. However, Now on the iPhone there is no way of starting the Listen feature from the open newspaper. Also on the iPhone, , the highlight on the Table of Contents, accessed from the top menu bar, is not visible to people with low vision on the new dark interface. The ''Listen'' feature makes PressReader an ideal choice for people with low vision or who are blind to be able to listen to the newspaper of their choice. Why don’t the developers of pressreader spend more time on making their app more accessible? For example, for VoiceOver users, if the Listen feature is accessed from the downloaded newspaper list one has to press the AM Radio button! Getting the VoiceOver labels correct might be a good start to improving accessibility..Version: 5.4.1

In paper mode when you zoom in the text is blurryThe scans need to be more high resolution cause i like reading off the image not the regular format of articles..Version: 7.1.2

PressreaderFor some reason my account keeps getting logged out while there is no wifi nice otherwise only if you have a library account or it’ll cost you a lot of money to get the magazines.Version: 7.1.1

Plante avec iPadOS 17Malheureusement, maintenant l’application plante depuis que j’ai installé iPadOS 17 sur le nouvel iPad Air! Fonctionnait très bien avec iPadOS 16….Version: 7.1

Crashes in seconds nowI use this daily to read the local newspaper, unfortunately after the latest release, it would crash within a couple of seconds of the app opening and keep doing so. The work around that corrected this for me, was to remove the app and then reinstall it. Seems to work properly now. I will update should that change..Version: 6.8.2

Love HelloTruly I am enjoying all the magazines Thank you.Version: 6.4.11

Gets ConfusedApp gets confused when it's in certain places (like aboard Air Canada flights, or in Hyatt hotels) and doesn't download your publications. Doesn't work too badly if you're at home, but for constant travellers, Pressreader can be very problematic..Version: 6.6

Reading features would be welcomeHaving better sort options (ie downloaded, last open date, publish date etc) would be great. Also a great feature, particularly for magazine, would be a progress bar for how much has been read of a particular issue..Version: 6.6

Looks like a good appLooks like it would be my choice if not so expensive. Too bad there is not an option for those of us who would only access a few titles..Version: 6.5.3

Great reader but expensive.Worth a try..Version: 6.5

Problème graphique depuis la dernière mise-à-jourJ’apprécie cette application, cependant, depuis la dernière mise-à-jour, à certains endroits, le texte est pixelisé à l’écran, ce qui rend le texte illisible..Version: 6.4.10

“Listen “featureShould be mandatory for all newspapers regardless of country ..Version: 6.4.10

Missing titlesJust wondering why I cannot get the Wall Street Journal, yet my relative who lives in another city close by can get it on his account, which is through a different library?.Version: 6.4.10

Enjoy the morning paperExcellent assortment of magazines and newspapers. Sometimes the app is very slow in downloading. Also a couple times a month the app seems to get confused and selecting a paper or magazine can be difficult. Must be the Monday morning blues. But overall it is a good app with great content..Version: 6.4.2

Times ColonistLove reading on my iPad every morning..Version: 6.4.2

Great way to start the dayWe travel lots and my newspapers are always with me no matter where in the world I am. I access the app through my public library which is easy. I get my news, editorials, sports at no cost what so ever - it is a must app. The downloads are endless..Version: 6.4.2

Almost as good as the real thing! No animated ads, annoying clickbait or content geared towards reduced attention spans. Preserves page layout for efficient and familiar reading experience. One downside - sometimes content doesn’t load the first time you turn to a page, leaving blank space instead. Usually fixed by flipping back to the page a few times..Version: 6.4

Love it!I am a magazine addict! While I much prefer to have paper copies of magazines, Press Reader has been a great alternative to be able to track down and easily read magazines on the go. I also love that I can set up auto downloads so I don’t need to keep checking back for new titles - the app takes care of that for me so that my faves are waiting for me in my downloaded file! I used to carry around d multiple paper magazines but it is so much easier to just take my iPad along and have thousands at my fingertips so I never runout of reading material on the go!.Version: 6.3.6
