  2. Current - RSS Feed Reader App Comments & Reviews (2026)

Current is an RSS reader built on a simple idea: your feed should never make you feel behind.

There are no unread counts. No red badges. No number climbing while you sleep, silently tallying everything you haven't read. Current shows you what's new right now, and that's it. Nothing is owed. Nothing is overdue. You open it when you want to read, and whatever's there is what's there.

The design is intentional. Every screen, every interaction, every animation was built to feel calm and unhurried. Articles are presented beautifully with clean typography and generous whitespace. Navigation is fluid and intuitive. The app gets out of the way and lets you focus on what matters: the writing.

Current supports multiple sync providers so you can bring your existing subscriptions:

- Feedbin
- Inoreader
- MiniFlux
- FreshRSS
- The Old Reader
- NewsBlur
- Local RSS (on-device, no account needed)

Features:

- Universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
- Beautiful article reader with smart formatting
- Full-text article extraction
- Light and dark themes
- Background refresh
- OPML import and export
- Share extension
- Keyboard shortcuts on iPad and Mac
- iCloud sync for local feeds

Current is a one-time purchase. No subscription. No ads. No tracking. Just an app you buy once and own forever.

Built by an indie developer who wanted to love RSS again.

Current - RSS Feed Reader Positive Reviews

Nice appI guess for a long time, the whole RSS mantra tired me out. I would get some new app and add in an OPML file and watch the app dutifully download thousands of subscription items. It seemed like no matter what I could only really look at the “today” menu. When I went backwards, I was faced with thousands of things. I wanted something different. No counts, no feeling of frustration with the reading. Enter Current Reader. I use the app on my Mac and iPhone. With the latest updates, I’m really enjoying the experience of losing the counts and whatever status they all had. There are things still being built and issues being fixed and that’s the other good thing with this. I can just watch as the app evolves. Right now though, for me and how I have worked on defining my use case, it works well. Thanks Terry. Loving the app..Version: 1.0.7

Missing Key FeatureThe app is visually and structurally very well designed. I paid for the app and very happy to support developers producing high quality apps like this one. However, the reader is missing a key feature that sadly keeps me from switching over from my current RSS reader, Feedly. Although the app supports different “Currents” (categories in Feedly speak) each current has to be viewed separately via the menu bar. Feedly has a great feature which provides a Today view option that displays the 6-7 of the most recent posts from each category (or skips a category if there are none) so I can scroll down and see just a handful of articles from each category. Feels much calmer and more organized and less chaotic than a stream of random, unrelated topics. Also, once I scroll past an article it’s marked as read so I don’t have to constantly remove articles from my feed manually. And after I get through last category, the feed is done, with a big checkmark and some basic stats, which makes me feel like I accomplished something even when I really haven’t..Version: 1.0.11

EDITED Great start, wish there were a few more featuresEDIT. Wow, all the things keeping me from using this as my daily reader have been adjusted. That’s actually amazing. This has my full support, and thank you for reviewing feedback! This is a great RSS reader, and I appreciate the lack of a monthly or yearly subscription model. I read both posts the developer wrote introducing this app and its philosophy. It’s highly customizable and extremely beautiful. The only thing is that the “fetch full feed” feature doesn’t seem to work for most sites in my feed that need it, and I wish triggering that was either automatic or from a swipe/pull down gesture like Inoreader. Additionally, more swipe gestures in general to navigate would be nice, and maybe a browser shortcut to quickly save articles to the app like some other readers do. That’s just my two cents, good work on this one!.Version: 1.0.10

Update: really needs filtersOriginally I had this at five stars, because it is awesome. And while that is true, it could really use filters for me to fine tune my sources. The app has these weird overly general suggestions like “you skipped the last several stories about Apple,” but I really just want to stop seeing the Apple TV, Apple Music, and Apple Watch stories from that source (as an example). Some sources cover a bunch of subjects, but I really just want one or two of them. I can filter very well on Bluesky, so I tend to not use Current nearly as much..Version: 1.0.13

Cute but not completeI love the concept of this reader. It looks good and seems relaxing. But it has some shortcomings that came up in brief testing that will keep me from moving to it just yet: * I think I accidentally “released” an article — and I can’t find any way to get the article back. * If you have a lot of “currents” (eg, by importing from another reader), they quickly get unwieldy to scroll through (at least on iPhone) * Not enough text display customization. It’s got extra line spacing when showing articles and no way to change. It may be easier for some people to read, but for me it’s just distracting and a bad use of my screen. * Would be nice if I could swipe to *change* read status, instead of needing to set one swipe for read and one for unread. * Some other nice ideas don’t quite work. Penny Arcade has trouble rendering whether I engage “webcomic” view or not, especially because about half the posts are comics and half are a blog post. (Also, is it just me, or is there some article view caching happening that doesn’t refresh I change view settings on the feed?) I’ll be watching this app and hope some of the rough edges get cleaned up so I can switch to this rss reader!.Version: 1.0.5

Does what it promisesI know from the title, this may sound like it should be a mediocre review. This is not a mediocre app, it is an exceptional one. It promises a uncluttered, simplified RSS reader, and it delivers. Before I adopted this app, I used Reeder, itself a fine RSS reader. But, the unread count, and that I let it climb bugged me. I was drawn to the app to zero out that count way too often. Having a RSS reader that does not shove an unread count in your face is refreshing. Calming, even. I can read items in my feed, or not, as I choose. There are improvements that could be made. Things like the APOD feed, it could be easier and more consistent to load the web page for the feed itself. I have not managed to get the keystrokes for previous artcle/next article to work, and I’m not sure if the problem is me, or the app. I like the three-paned view, but I think that won’t show up if the window is too narrow. These are nits though, small things that I think could be done better by an app with a simple mission, that executes brilliantly..Version: 1.0.13

This is how internet content should be digested. In over 20 years of smartphone ownership, this singularly the best app I have ever installed. Online content can easily become overwhelming, in both speed and volume. That feeling has only grown over time as we’ve moved from blogs, news, forums to social media. I’d love to see the “currrents” approach available on social media apps. Even decentralized social media, like Mastodon, can still give you a sense of endless scrolling to catch up on what you think you missed. FOMO is a real problem. For now, my RSS feeds have become more human. More sane..Version: 1.0.14

A thoughtful, brilliantly-designed app that intelligently revamps the RSS reader concept.Current Reader is the first true reinvention of RSS since Google Reader shut down. That was a truly sad day - Reader was probably the app I used more than any other at the time. I haven’t used many RSS readers since. None felt the same. Not even The Old Reader. All of them just made me miss GR. But Current Reader makes me want to explore. It’s not just a cleaner interface or a nicer coat of paint — it fundamentally rethinks what an RSS reader can be. It does take a little time to wrap your head around some of the concepts such as Currents or the River. My old Google Reader muscle memory didn’t apply at first. But the design is so intuitive and thoughtfully crafted that the learning curve actually feels fun. The more I use it, the more I want to explore it. Brilliantly designed, genuinely innovative, and the first RSS app in years that feels like a leap forward instead of a nostalgia project..Version: 1.0.6

Very cool concept. Lots of glitchesThe concept is great but usability is really tough right now. Suggestions: make adding sources to a current way more seamless and usable. Fix the many many glitches. Eg, renaming a source works about 30% of the time. Disappointed I spent $10 on something that feels very alpha. Maybe beta. That being said I am rooting for this app and hope it gets better because the concept is great. For now I’ll sadly go back to my original rss Feed because it’s been extremely annoying to set up..Version: 1.0.10

The Kind of Reader I’ve Been Looking ForIt’s a me issue, but the unread number in my RSS readers always made me feel like I wasn’t “completing” something. Current focusing on nothing but the reading and throwing out unread counts while making the reading experience nice and clean really clicked with me. Being able to mark sources as specific content, like web comics, and have them formatted to better fit the content. Overall very happy with it and looking forward to future improvements..Version: 1.0.10

TranquilAI is killing UI? Not today. Current proves thoughtful UI still matters. I’ve been using RSS readers more than two decades, and Current finally gets it right. It is the Hiroshi Yoshimura of reading experiences, warm, calm, tranquil; conducive to contemplation and intimacy with the material it presents. Current expands the boundaries of my screen while drawing me closer. I am able to be present and focused in a way I rarely experience on my iPhone. It is exactly what I want while reading, what I’ve long hoped for and, until now, did not think possible..Version: 1.0.6

Very nice. Just two notes:The reading view does not respond correctly to taps at the top, which should cause the article to scroll to the top. The custom webview looks nice with its custom toolbar, but since the app needs to open a standard webview in order to display Safari Reader mode, there seems little point in not just opening the standard webview in the first place. Also, the custom webview doesn't support magnification..Version: 1.0.13

A genuinely new way of reading the newsRegardless of what you read, how you read it has always felt like a chore. It’s something to keep up with. Current is the rare attempt at considering what it would be like to have a healthy relationship with the news. If you want to stay informed about the world, but don’t like the way other apps make you feel when you do, check this one out..Version: 1.0.1

Well Worth The Initial AdjustmentSince the 2000’s, I’ve been practicing the early morning ritual of plowing through my RSS feed. Having had thousands of interactions with (the very good!) NetNewsWire, it took three or four days before Current Reader began to feel familiar and natural. It was well worth getting used to. Current really is a calmer and more beautiful way to absorb the daily deluge of information flowing in via RSS. Highly recommended +++.Version: 1.0.7

Really liking the experienceNormally, I tend to over-analyze apps before spending even a few bucks. (Why?!) But when I learned the philosophy behind the Current Reader’s development, I was sold. It can take conviction and courage — in addition to vision and time and effort — to challenge longstanding conventions. I applaud the developer for figuring out a way to make RSS feed-reading less stressful, even enjoyable..Version: 1.0.6

Has potentialIt’s quite a shock trying to use after years of using Reeder (Classic). But I dig the idea going for here. One big improvement that could be made is fully implementing swipe to navigate. As a system that makes sense. Modal presentations should always allow for swiping down to dismiss. And pushed on presentations should always allow for swiping back..Version: 1.0.6

Wonderful reimagining of an RSS ReaderLove this take on on RSS reader. I’ve been awaiting its release since it was announced. I’ve been consciously trying to turn of my “notification zero” mindset and this fits the bill perfectly. This is version 1 so I’m excited to see what is next. I use Feedbin to get my newsletters in my RSS feed and would love reader mode support (and the ability to set it for specific feeds)..Version: 1.0.1

Incredible startI quickly fell in love with this app. I have been deleting apps from my phone to lower noise, and I have replaced 2 apps with this one. This takes enough stress out of my feeds I added some feeds to have a larger river! Suggestion: Could we get fun picture icons of rivers in different art styles? I like recognizing apps by pictures instead of letters..Version: 1.0.6

User interface issues stop me from loving this.I really want to like this app but there are any issues with going to a webpage where videos on the webpage will just keep trying to open full screen and I can’t find a setting to actually disable these features..Version: 1.0.13

No subscription required!A beautifully considered RSS reader offered for an incredible value. As noted in another review, I would also love to see support for emailed newsletters along the lines of what Feedbin offers. With that and the ability to watch videos from the YouTubers I follow without leaving the app and this would be the only reader I need..Version: 1.0.4

Calm take on reading feedsI’ve been using this a couple weeks (was on the beta) and I’m loving it. No unread badges, just dip into the river and see what floats by when you have some time. Breaking news floats by quickly, daily stuff medium speed, and evergreen stuff slower. Nice clean UI. Nice power features like the command palette..Version: 1.0.2

Great app…one annoying bugLove the concept. One thing that is driving me insane, though, is that the apps on all platforms freeze when you re-enter after being away. Quitting then re-opening fixes it, but I'd like not to have to do that every time..Version: 1.0.5

Beautiful, delightfulLots of hidden surprises and it’s gorgeous. Its model will work for me long term. The model takes some getting used to but it’s also very intriguing.I switched over from Unread, which is also gorgeous but much more traditional. I may end up switching back and forth..Version: 1.0.3

Needs Integrated BrowserI like the idea of this app, but it’s missing some things that I need to switch. I currently use Reeder on Mac/iOS. 1. Keyboard scrolling for article content (page up/down do nothing - only arrow keys work) 2. Integrated browser. Most of my feeds are truncated and require opening the browser. The integrated browser in Reeder really makes things a lot smoother..Version: 1.0.10

Great app, looking for one feature to make the full switchReally great design on the app. Reminds me of the old River of news app from a while back. Looking for the ability to have the app mark an article as read while scrolling through the article list..Version: 1.0.13

FinallyI’ve finally found an RSS reader that seems perfectly okay with my tendency to just nope out of online life now and then. I don’t feel overwhelmed by unread stories. I can just hop in and vibe with the flow. This is a news aggregator that just sorta rolls with my flakiness. In the best way..Version: 1.0.13

Calm take on reading feedsI've been using this for a couple weeks (I was on the beta) and I love it. No unread badges, just dip into the current and see what floats by when you have some time. Nice clean UI. Has some nice power user features on the macOS app, too, like a keyboard-based command palette..Version: 1.0.2

Looks nice, but where’s the Feedly support?Bought this because it looks like a nice reader but very surprised to see that there isn’t yet Feedly support which I think of as the gold standard sync service..Version: 1.0.10

Beautifully Stress FreeThis reader removes all the stress from following many feeds, it gives you control of what matters and somehow does that with very simple controls. This is a marvel of design (actual design: both how it looks and how it functions).Version: 1.0.13

A RSS reader that shows me kindnessI’m deliberate about the feeds I subscribe to, but my readers trigger my scrupulosity and make me feel shame for not keeping up with them. This reader is so much kinder and lets me wade through information without creating an insatiable backlog. Thank you!.Version: 1.0.2

Has potential but very buggyThe new metaphor for rss is compelling but this version is very buggy. Scrolling is unreliable, locks up and is unresponsive and will often not render items - there is just a blank space where an article should be. Scrolling will sometimes cause the item to reappear but only as it disappears at the top of the interface and is unreadable and in tappable. There are also inconsistencies between the iOS and macOS interfaces that muddle the interaction and make it more work than necessary to move between. Not clear if this is a native app Or done in electron. The latter might explain the jankiness..Version: 1.0.2

A lot of potentialI’m really interested in the concept, but it needs some polish on the first run setup and reading experience. Moving from another reader, the first run pulls in lots of old articles and you have to wait for the to fade, which required me to mark the feeds and wait a couple days. That’s going to lose some people. Most readers—Kindle is one example—allow you to choose your typefaces, line density, etc. I immediately missed my settings and haven’t been able to overcome that to switch. I’ll check back for updates..Version: 1.0.7

Repeated lock ups2026-03-12: The latest update has fixed the long delay every time I open the app. Original: I hope you like sitting around waiting to be able to interact with the app for two to three minutes every time you open this app. Frequently, when opening the app, it will also crash to the home screen. I just want to read a couple of articles when I have a little bit of free time, but this app discourages that..Version: 1.0.10

Great ideas, buggy executionSift mode is brilliant, but does not work as advertised. Release (r) either doesn’t update the frame, loses focus (requiring you to click back in), or lags when it does happen to work..Version: 1.0.6

The RSS client I didn’t know I neededI can have various feeds that publish at wildly different cadences and for the first time not feel overwhelmed by the content I’ve chosen to subscribe to..Version: 1.0.13

InspiringVia daring fireball I read the landing page - as soon I got a paragraph into the thesis, I knew I was sold. This is the kind of app and presentation of the problem/solution I’d aspire to make myself. Kudos..Version: 1.0.5

Thoughtful designIt’s clear the author put a lot of thought and effort into making a well designed app..Version: 1.0.10

Everything Old is New AgainSuperb rethink of one of the best ways to use the web. Elegant, useful and simple to use!.Version: 1.0.2

Fresh takeIt's great to see a fresh take on what an RSS feed reader should be. I was a beta tester and I know that a lot of care went into this app..Version: 1.0

Great readerA reader that doesn’t compete for your attention and treats you like a human. I like the philosophy..Version: 1.0.1

Wonderfully modern and sophisticatedThis is an incredible app with so much thoughtfulness and care behind it. it’s minimal, gorgeous, elegant, and puts user experience above all else. it doesn’t get better than this.Version: 1.0.1

I love this appAnd the dev has a real passion for it and it shows..Version: 1.0

A lovely swimI’ve tried many RSS apps over the years, this has a great feel, unique features, and a promising future. Dive in!.Version: 1.0.4

So much scrollingThis is a nice enough app, but it doesn't involve simple UI things that should be necessary. Why does clicking on river not take you to the top? You have to scroll and scroll and scroll and then pull down to refresh. Why? I like the information this app delivers, but I hate the way it delivers it..Version: 1.0.13

Interesting and uniqueCurrent Reader is an opinionated, unique, and interesting take on RSS readers. It has a few rough edges at version 1, but is refreshing nonetheless..Version: 1.0.1

The calming effect of CurrentVery nice app that brings a new take on what’s a RSS feed reader should be. The typography, layout and UX make the experience of reading more enjoyable and less stressful..Version: 1.0
