GENKI Vocab Cards is a digital vocabulary card app that enables users to learn approximately 1,200 words essential for beginners along with the native pronunciations at their own pace!

This is the official iPhone app from GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, a best-selling series of Japanese learning materials boasting more than 1.2 million copies sold.

Advantages
◆Users can view the cards and listen to the recordings as they like, enabling them to study at their own pace.
◆By repeating a process of memorization and self-checking, learners can firmly master important beginning-level vocabulary.
◆Words already memorized are progressively removed from the card deck, so users can concentrate on just the words that challenge them, making for a more efficient approach to learning.

Study methods and functions
◇ “MyDeck” allows users to view the cards over and over, so they can take their time learning.
・The words can be studied by working from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.
・Learners can listen to natural pronunciations by native speakers of Japanese.
・Fun illustrations help users to better retain the words studied.
・Each card also includes an example sentence with an English translation and a recording of its pronunciation.

◇ “Check” helps learners to track their mastery.
・Users check their understanding of the vocabulary studied and sort the words into those mastered and those not yet retained.
・Retention can be checked by going from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.
・The cards of words already mastered are taken out of the set, leaving behind just those that still need to be worked on.

◇ “List” displays a list of all words covered by the app so that users can see their progress and review the vocabulary.
・Checkmarks are automatically placed next to words that have been mastered.
・The word cards can be displayed from the list entries, enabling quick review.
・The list can be arranged in any of three orderings: lesson order, a-i-u-e-o order, and alphabetical order.

GENKI Vocab Cards for 2nd Ed. App Comments & Reviews

GENKI Vocab Cards for 2nd Ed. Positive Reviews

Sound issuesUpdate: I followed the instructions of another review and the sound now works. Close all apps, flip your side mute button off then on, restart phone, flip your side mute button off then on again, now the app should have sound. The sound doesn’t work. Sadly I cannot figure out a way to contact the app for assistance. I was excited to us this in pairing with the GENKI books.Version: 3.0.0

Fantastic! This makes it to where I don't have to carry around a bunch of notecards, I can switch up if I'm reading in English or Japanese which is great to help make sure you recognize the words both ways, and you get to hear the pronunciations! I have the vocab and the conjugation apps and I love them both!.Version: 2.2.1

OkBut the thing is you thought I would BUY your book AND THEN, PAY for your MULTIPLE APPS??? Nah. No way. Idk why they wouldn’t all be in one app. This app could instantly beam the language into my skull and I still wouldn’t give five stars. Okay, maybe I would cuz that would be cool, but YALL STILL GOT ME MESSED UP..Version: 3.0.2

Sound issues at first butYou have to switch your phone off of silent mode while using the app. It works perfectly if you do that.Version: 3.0.4

Vocab isn’t completeI knew I could get better apps to learn vocabulary for free, but I wanted to get this because I could follow along with my textbook. To my disappointment the vocabulary isn’t a complete selection of everything in the chapter! Such a waste.Version: 3.0.2

Very helpful!I use the GENKI books in school and I find this app to be so helpful. I’m surprised it’s not more reviewed. GENKI should advertise more that they have this app. It has every chapters vocab and their is also a kanji and conjugation app which are also great..Version: 3.0.2

Good review for vocabulary quizzesThe check and shuffle features make it very nice as a flash card type review. It needs a hiragana and katakana chart for quick reference. Also wish there was a way to hide the Kanji (until after I’m comfortable with the words’ spelling)..Version: 3.0.2

Great Flash cardsGreat flash cards if you are using the GENKI text book. I haven’t had any issue with the sound muting that wasn’t resolved by flipping the silent switch back and forth..Version: 3.0.4

Sound works when silent mode is offIt’s a great app overall. However, I couldn’t hear any sound unless I turned off silent mode on iPhone..Version: 3.0.4

Add dictionary form to the verbsIt would be nice if the verbs were not in the te form so it would be easier to know the dictionary form, because in many cases you cant tell. But other than that the app is useful.Version: 3.0.2

Pretty goodThe interface is a bit clunky but the vocab selection is quite (being from the books)..Version: 3.0.2

Great review appThis has been really helpful in my Japanese class!! Also you can shuffle the deck, they must have updated it.Version: 3.0.2

Fine but missing spaced repFirst the person the rated down cause no iPad support is wrong. It's optimized for iPhone but works on iPad just like it says. It's just not scaled up for iPad (yet) That being said the program is great but missing 1 very key feature which is spaced repetition. Sadly all the audio files, sentences, pictures and vocab in the world won't make this a useable app till they add spaced repetition. Save yourself the Money for now and check back often for spaced repetition addition. Tip to developers: vocabulary apps are useless without spaced repetition option..Version: 1.0.1

Make sure mute phone / silent mode is offGENKI is treated like a game and as such audio will be silent if it is off. Otherwise the app works fine. Good like with nihongo.Version: 3.0.4

Sound issueGreat app to reenforced your Hiragana and Japanese vocabulary. To fix the sound just un-mute your sound with the side switch. Worked for me on iPhone 6s..Version: 3.0.2

Mostly usefulJust downloaded this and appreciate it so far. Fairly well designed, aligned to Genki textbooks, useful images, and I especially like the sample sentences that accompany the vocab. It always helps me to see exactly how a certain term is used, and it reinforces recently learned grammar points too. Overall I’d recommend. Two small annoyances for me that I hope the developers fix: during the Check review, the flashing “Remember?” image is completely unnecessary and very distracting. Please remove this! Also, when checking the correct answer, it displays for just a second (partly transparent), and then disappears. This answer should remain on-screen until tapped again so users can read at their own pace, especially if it’s long/includes kanji that needs more time to read..Version: 2.2.0

Great, but Needs ShuffleThis app is great for students using Genki. I used to input 50 vocabulary words per chapter to another flashcard application, but with this app, I save tons of time. The app is visually appealing and I like how the vocabulary is divided into sections so I can devote my attention to a handful of words as opposed to the whole list. However, this app lacks a shuffle feature to rearrange the cards in the deck. Random order eliminates expectations of words so you learn based solely on the translation and not because that one word was first in the list. If it had a shuffle feature, I would rate this app 5 stars..Version: 1.0

Initially the sound didn't playSo I followed these steps to fix it: (1) Close all applications. (2) Flick the mute switch (on the left side of the iPhone) off and on. (3) Restart the iPhone. (4) Flick the mute switch off and on. (5) Open GENKI Vocab Cards. This app has pros and cons. PROS * All the vocabulary of both GENKI I and GENKI II, 2nd edition. * Divided in lessons corresponding to the chapters of the books. * The cards are illustrated with the illustrations from the book. * Each card has an audio button that sounds the pronunciation of the word/phrase. * Easy to use user interface. CONS * There's no SRS, and even the 'shuffle mode' doesn't work. This makes this app moderately good for learning each lessons vocab for the first time, but not for long-term reviewing..Version: 2.2.0

Well done app!If you're learning Japanese with the Genki text, this app purchase should be a no-brainer. Well written app that I find much more usable than Anki. Still gives you the benefits of a SRS based approach, but with more features that make it easier to review as well as well spoken sentence and mnemonic examples. Enjoy this app along with the Kanji app. Both work fine on the ipad..Version: 2.0.0

Good for vocabPro's: Very nice layout, good for studying the vocab of both books. Can see what words you need to study still in one place. Nice to have the same pictures as the drill card CD. Nice to have an example sentence. Cons: can't check a word as "known" during the card view phase to quickly get it out of view. No random word studying. (No shuffling the card order) Needs: someway to test conjugating at least the basic conjugations. And (a dream) have it be timed somehow like Anki does it. All in all: I was excited to see Genki finally make an app, hopefully they will continue and make one for grammar or listening. But this is a really good start. Definitely worth the price..Version: 1.0

Great app! This is a good tool to use in addition to the textbook of course. The format is very similar to flash cards and I really like the option of either only doing vocabulary from one chapter or cumulatively. I would recommend getting this app and maybe the conjugations edition. The kanji one didn't do much for me so I would skip on that..Version: 2.2.0

Great Compliment to the Text BookI'm using a combo of textfugu, Genki and Children's books to learn the Japanese language. This app is extremely useful to those using the Genki text and well worth the cost. I imagine it would be of limited to use if you're not using the text though. Also, I wish it included all the vocab for each chapter and so ill subtract a star for that..Version: 2.1.1

Could Be A Lot BetterIt's nice having this to go along with the genki books and it's great having pronunciation on the cards too but the review system is worthless. There's no randomization while reviewing and it also lacks a spaced repetition system. Using the genki decks on Anki is much better, although that app costs 4 times as much and doesn't have audio playback like this..Version: 2.2.0

This will help you a ton!I got the app to help me memorize the words on the go. It's good to just pop open the app and start practicing . This app helps you not only by showing you pictures but uses the words in sentences to help you get a better understanding, I've learned a lot thanks to this!.Version: 2.1.0

Great appThis is a very useful Japanese learning app. I've tried a lot but this is by far the best. The example sentences also follow the grammar points pertains to the chapter. Do it's like you are double staying without even trying. It is worth the price Espevially since it includes all chapter for Genki 1 &2..Version: 2.2.0

Add quizzes pleaseI love the idea of being able to learn more vocab without having to carry around my genki book. I am very disappointed that this app and their kanji app doesn't have a game or quiz section with multiply choice or something to see if you actually remember. A bit expensive for something missing games and quizzes..Version: 2.0.0

Great appsThese (3) genki apps are great. I use the genki and minna no nihongo apps to study and am getting great practice. 1. I would like to see speech/listening implementation cause that is incredibly important for learning the language. 2. Where can we comment on incorrect words? Most of the words seem fine but I noticed "major" is a different word from the genki textbook and all the words from the app follow the textbook precisely otherwise. So note if another word is diff. But correct? Or double check words and spelling for the app? Minor detail but a little dangerous for learning. Still highly recommend!!!!.Version: 2.1.1

Fantastic app! This is a great app to use with the genki lessons. It's amazing for reviewing each chapter. I was so sick of using flash cards. I realized I had poor pronunciation on a few words too. The audio examples helped clear that up for me. The app runs really smoothly too!!.Version: 2.0.0

Definitely Helping! This app is a great study tool when I'm working alone. It certainly beats carrying hundreds of flash cards everywhere! 2.0 has some subtle interface improvements. Edit: Thanks for the new randomization feature!.Version: 2.1.1

Almost great...Should be able to customize your own deck with different words from each lesson. Also, it would've been nice if they've included all the vocab words from each chapter. At least all the ones that are included in the book's audio..Version: 2.2.0

Awesome sample sentencesIt's great because not only each term has picture and pronunciation, it also comes with a sample sentence with audio. Would be nice to be able to tap on words and have the corresponding card open!.Version: 2.0.0

Great app!I really love that this app has recordings for the words as well as example sentences with recordings. Seeing the word in context really helps you to remember it. I took off one star just because it lacks iPad support, it would be much easier to use this app on the iPad..Version: 2.0.0

Was working fine until the latest updateThere’s a bug in the check feature where the text is white so you can’t see it since it’s on a white background. Please fix, thank you!!.Version: 3.0.3

I’m writing a second review, they fixed the appGreat work! Works great! Thank you so much for listening and fixing it.Version: 3.0.4

Keeps crashingAs I go through my deck the app periodically crashes while letting me know I'm finished X number of cards and have X number to go before I finish. I keep checking the App Store for an update to solve this ~ otherwise it's a good app~ cool way to memorize the vocab without making your own flash cards :).Version: 2.1.1

Great !Exactly what it says , love it.Version: 2.0.0
