MapleRead SE App Comments & Reviews
MapleRead SE Positive Reviews
Nice and still improvingOverall, this has been a great epub reading app coming from many years of using Marvin. But, like any app, there is always room for improvement. A recent issue (which is probably not the developer’s fault thanks to iOS 18) is that the “Lookup” option (dictionary) is gone from the list when pressing on a word. Other minor issues: I’d love for the clock to always show onscreen in the upper left (without needing to tap the screen). Also, syncing reading progress between iPad and iPhone is great but takes attention since it needs to be done manually on each device every time you want to switch between devices. Lastly, on a really positive note, the developer reads and responds to feedback and is still making improvements to the app. That’s worth the price for the paid version..Version: 5.7.1
Great app, with lots of options!I want to thank the developers very much for their quick reply and support ... it is greatly appreciated! May I also take the time to compliment them on a wonderfully done app! I love the many options they have included, especially being able to import and use my own chosen fonts... I use a font called Happy Monkey that imitates the written had, one that no ebook reader would ever use, so having the ability to import my own fonts is a heaven sent on these old eyes! When reading an ebook and looking at a screen the majority of the day, this ability becomes a true blessing ... a soothing background color and choice of font makes all the difference on one's ability to enjoy an ebook, so thank you for such a incredibly well thought out app! This old man's eyes truly appreciate it... I know developers probably only hear complaints, via support, and on the majority of their reviews, so I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for such a well thought out app and design! I love and appreciate your app so much I purchased all versions to show that appreciation. I also try to tip the developers, as much as possible to show my appreciation , and as frequently as my wallet allows ... I believe it is one way we all can continue to support the development on this app!.Version: 4.3
Finally? Yes, finally.I've been searching for a successor to the Marvin series of e-reader apps FOREVER. How obsessed am I with finding this app? I haven't updated my iPad in over a year for fear that Marvin will no longer open. Marvin isn't in the app store anymore. It was accidentally deleted on a couple of my devices and I can never get it back. There have been many contenders. This is it. Does it have everything Marvin has? No. The customization isn't as advanced. Dev, if you're reading this, I have so many screenshots and notes detailing the things Marvin was capable of in terms of customization. I'll share them with you. The background color wheel is a nice touch, but I wish it had a color picking tool as well to copy colors outside the app. BookFusion has this. This app will now be my go-to. You have no idea what this means coming from me. I still have Marvin, Marvin3, and Marvin SXS on my iPad. But I will be using this app. Only one slight bug I notice -when I slide over to another app and return to MapleReader, my book has closed! This is a major annoyance, but easily fixed..Version: 5.0.2
Only epub reader that meets all my needs plus moreI wanted a reader that would let me import epubs, read with font+layout+colors customizations, and provide good text to speach for when listening feels easier than actually reading. This app executes on these things solidly. I can't remember what I paid for this app, but it doesn't feel like I paid enough given its high quality. One thing I didn't realize I wanted to have at the time, was the ability to easily import books from calibre. This app even autodetects your local calibre server. Additionally, the app lets you turn your iphone library into a server to sync books to other services. I'm not sure why this app doesn't get more 5 star reviews, but it should. Thanks for making such a great product..Version: 5.3
Terrific appI enjoyed the layout and UI of the CX version and decided to purchase the SE version for more features. To be honest, other than loading more books and having a few more themes to choose from, I think someone can get by using the free version. I don't see how the developer can claim the SE version is more feature rich. The bookshelf theme option is still limited to just two. Highlighting is still the same. You would think the paid version would have the ability to underline or strike through a sentence. What was most galling was the way the developer inserted a way to donate more money to the app in the form of a "gratuity". I just paid $6.99 and you want more money? If you only want to read one book at a time, stick with the free version..Version: 4.2
Second best in a dozen is still pretty goodThis app isn’t the best on the App Store, or my first choice, but it is a strong second, and looking for something to replace Marvin 3, it feels like this might be the only app of the bunch with a real shot at replacing it if given enough to get caught up in features. The good: - highly customizable. Marvin 3 users will recognize a lot of things they love. - Active development. - Lots of solid features already. The bad: - Missing a lot of features that would otherwise make it great such as auto-scrolling or updating your progress on Goodreads. - The interface could use a rethink. Many of the menus and locations for features could be better thought through. Developer should consider brushing up on best UX design practices. - Not the prettiest app on the market. The Ugly: - For some reason, you have to register an account with them in order to add books to your library, even locally. - The app does not make use of iOS’s local file explorer. This means that it can be a great hassle for users to add books into their library as you’ll have to go outside of the app to do so locally, or frustratingly, re-sign in to other external services that otherwise might already be attached and signed into your file explorer, such as Google Drive..Version: 5.2.1
Difficult to sync between devicesI love the format of this reader. Especially the book theme. However I stopped using it for 2 reasons. The bar above is just too hard to read in night mode. And most importantly syncing is not an easy task. To down load a book I have to do it on both devices. Then I have to open each one and get pass the cover and extra pages to the contents page. Then I have to sync it. On my other devices e I have to sync it, I can read but before closing I have to re sync it. Nothing streamlined. Wish it flowed better because I really love the layout. I also have to recreate all my shelves and place books seperately into those shelves. Just wish it talked better between devices..Version: 3.6
Pain, pain, pain 😕Still struggling to copy my over 3k of books library from my old iPad to a new one. Keep in mind, fellow readers, it is not easy. At all. Especially if you are not a computer geek, but a regular person who simply loves to read and collect books. Unlike other apps for reading, this one doesn’t allow to copy its content when you clone your old device via iCloud, you will be needing to do A LOT of painful movements. First, if your books are not from iTines, it won’t allow you to see your library via File Sharing. So, it’s not really an option. Second, if you think to do it thru MapleRead own server would be easy, guess what? It is not. They won’t even allow you to copy your whole library at once. So, instead of getting rid of my old device, I have to keep it around because it still stores all my books. What a disappointment..Version: 3.0.4
Almost perfectI just wanted a basic reader that actually worked, showed 2 columns in landscape, didn’t skew the words halfway off the page, decent font selection, and most of all keep track of where you are in the book when you turn off the iPad. You’d be surprised how many reader apps don’t do these basic things. Why doesn’t the iPad version have the “status bar always on” option? The iPhone version does have this option. I like to see the clock and battery while reading without having to tap in the center to see it and then tap again to go back to reading..Version: 5.2
Continues to impress.MapleRead is the kitchen-sink ebook reader. It does more than any other reader to accommodate my preferences: set white font on black background then adjust system brightness to achieve desired contrast, use minimal side margins but add paragraph spacing, organize in three dimensions (sort type, tags, sets), note categorization, share books between devices without having to involve cloud storage… etc etc. It does have some rough edges — you can’t have all those features available without that — but every feature, even the ones I never use, appear well thought out. And, after years of use, the app continues to improve. If you want an ebook reader that you control, this is your choice..Version: 4.0
Great ePub Reader!Being an avid reader, I routinely look for newer and better software to enhance the experience, but I keep coming back to Maple. Using Calibre’s opds server function, the link up between my laptop where the ebooks arrive and my phone where the ebooks are read is smooth and fast. There are enough options for font, size, layout, background, overall look of the app, how pages are turned, etc. to please anyone and the controls for them are quick and easy. There are lots of options for sorting and viewing multiple books so I can quickly find whatever I want from 3000+ titles. Navigation within books is easy and you can set bookmarks. Good, responsive support from the developer. Both thumbs up!.Version: 3.0.5
Wonderful ePub reader appI tried several ePub apps before finding this gem. I like to have all my books on my Ereader (and there are thousands). I was very frustrated with the other ebook readers because after I bought a new iPad, I could only move 1 book at a time from Caliber. MapleRead SE has an option called PC Upload which allows me to upload hundreds at once. It only takes seconds. So easy. There might be a way using those other apps, but I couldn’t find it. This app is wonderful. I even had a question on how to do something, and Customer Service emailed me back on a Sunday. Can’t say enough good things about this app..Version: 3.0.5
Love it! Except…I was looking to replace Marvin Ereader which I’ve loved but now is no longer updated. MapleRead has all those features and I absolutely love it. It is top notch! The only reason I give it four stars is that it does not sync very well for me. It is inconsistent and a little confusing. Sometimes it does a perfect job and other times it doesn’t pick up the right place from the other device. It’s gotten frustrating for me, so that is my only complaint. Otherwise I would highly recommend getting this app..Version: 4.8
Best iOS and PadOS reader I’ve ever hadBeen using this app for years to read epub and PDFs with all the features I could ever want and easy to connect to Calibre to transfer books. I literally can’t think of any suggestions for improvement other than the recent update has removed the smaller UI scaling size I had before. If that could be re-implemented I would be so grateful. Thank you for continuing to update and develop this app! 💗 Update: UI scaling back with full settings like before! Very responsive developer. Thank you!.Version: 5.0.1
Best combined epub & PDF Reader for iPad and iPhoneWe’ve been waiting ages for a competent and well-designed iPad e-reader which handles both epubs AND PDFs. MapleRead SE finally ended this wait. By far the best and most elegant e-reading app available. Developer is active on the app’s mobileread forum thread and responds to bugs and feature requests promptly. He added “instant” page turns and two-page PDF viewing in Landscape, both of which are huge for us. I have NO affiliation with MapleRead whatsoever, just appreciate a great app when I see it (which isn’t very often). Worth $20 easy in my opinion..Version: 3.0.1
Love the new audio-book feature!I am so excited that I can now listen to my favorite books! Any EPUB book can now become an audio book. How amazing! Thanks for adding this feature! Now I am listening while driving, exercising, etc. Just so useful! I love that there are many high quality voices you can download through the System Settings (Accessibility | Spoken Content). I suggest you download the Enhanced or Premium voices whenever available. They are very good quality and often exceed expectations. (My favorite voices are Nathan Enhanced and Samantha Enhanced.) Compare to many costly subscription-based reader apps (with much less features), this pay-once-only app is really a great deal. I’ve seen reader apps come and gone, or become abandonware. This app has been around for years and still being actively maintained and improved. Highly recommend..Version: 5.0
Love the App…Wish for a couple of improvementsLove the app and its connectivity! I have a couple of upgrade wishes… I Wish for highlighter improvements, especially when operating in in Dark Mode. The Problem is that the text stays the WHITE FONT COLOR after you highlight and because of the bright highlighter color makes it difficult if not impossible to read. The whole point of highlighting is to make something easier to see, not harder. The simple suggestion is to Make the letters black font color when they are highlighted as this will at least render them readable with contrast. ALSO, can you add underlining? Double underlining, Curley underlining, all in multiple choice colors and bolding too? Great Job Developers!.Version: 5.7.2
Very complicated interfaceThere seem to be a lot of features, but the interface is very complicated and not intuitive. The first thing the app does when you open it is make you go to the help page. You can't even add a book that's stored on your iPhone from inside the app itself. I had to read the help page to learn this because I couldn't find any button at all for adding books. The layout defaults in the reading view don't seem quite right to me, but I'm used to Kindle..Version: 5.7.2
Outstanding App for large librariesI have a very large library of ~19,000 ePub and pdf books and articles. I used the PC upload and Calibre integration features to import them, and it works wonderfully! I absolutely LOVE this app. iBooks/ Apple Books is simply unusable at this point for a large collection of books. Your app lets me do everything l wanted to be able to do in managing my library. I am really thankful I found your app!.Version: 3.2.1
Great app, even better supportPhenomenal app that has everything I need in an iBooks replacement. I selfhost a Calibri content server and this works perfectly. The only thing the app was missing to me was the ability to have a custom background when using dark mode. So I emailed the developer and my feature request was implemented within a week. Thank you!.Version: 4.5
New bug fixWith the latest update, 75% of my 300 books are not listed by date added. They are all listed as added in 1969. Very frustrating. I love reading with this app and hope this can be fixed..Version: 4.4
Excellent controlsI am switching to MapleRead to read epubs. I have much more control over how the text is displayed: I can choose from lots of fonts, and also line spacing, paragraph spacing, and between my choices and the publishers (interesting to see how I differ from most of them). It is satisfying to my eye to have the text adjusted just as I like it..Version: 3.7.2
Great reader needs highlighting enhancementsI love the reader. One of the best. Great options I plan on exploring soon. However, I depend on colors to identify answers in my ePub articles. I need at least four readily available highlighter colors when preparing lessons in ePub format on my iPad Pro. After highlighting a particular text I tap on "Mark" and it highlights nicely. But there’s only one available color for highlighting. I need a pop up box with at least four highlighting colors to choose from (instead of just one). This functionality shouldn’t be that difficult to make available to the end user. Many ePub readers provide this type of functionality. I’m really disappointed that the SE and CE combo apps I purchased from Maplepop LLC don’t provide this basic highlighting functionality so readily available in other ePub Readers..Version: 2.1
Not quite there yetThe reader is great, one of the best available on iOS right now. If only the other features would also work properly, this app would easily be worth double the price, but they don't. Sync across devices doesn't work properly, the "download" button is missing completely on some devices for the same book and same calibre server, and so on. TL;DR great reader, poor implementation of other features..Version: 3.3
Best e-readerDon’t know why, it just feels more pleasant to read EPUB books in MapleRead than other readers. Its book sets and tags help me easily organize my huge library. It also works well with Calibre. Great coherent support for PDF too. Tons of features, yet it's easy to use. Simply the best e-reader that I’ve ever used. Highly recommended..Version: 3.0.4
This app is an incredible secret! Why don’t more people know about MapleRead? I’ve been using this now for several years and couldn’t ever go back to Apple’s app. No way. Updates are regular and it truly deserves to be better known. A++++.Version: 5.6
Continues To CrashI like to read in Landscape mode and if I use my iPad in portrait and then go to landscape and open the app the book never opens. I have to reboot iPad to be able to read. Although sometimes the paging just gets messed up. It splits the pages in the middle. I really like this app so much that I put up with this..Version: 4.1
Nearly perfect, but no CBRs!This app is nearly perfect for my ebook needs! I love that it can connect to my calibre server unlike so many other apps, and it works with epubs and pdfs. The only problem is that I can’t download any of my old scanned magazines that I out into CBR format..Version: 5.0.2
Very goodHas all the features you would want, especially like the new addition of instant page turn option. However sync does not seem to be working.Version: 2.0
Notes are having problemsIOS 14 appears to have introduced a bug that makes it really hard to create notes. I look forward to an update :-).Version: 3.5.2
Almost perfectI have vision impairment. This is the best app. Please add a feature to change the text color of PDFs in daylight mode. I will pay extra for that feature. Please implement this. Thank you!.Version: 4.0
Needs automatic reading position syncI switch between iPad and iPhone all the time. Having to manually sync reading position is very frustrating..Version: 5.6.2
Great app but notes are brokenI love this app but notes seem to be broken in iOS 14. I can make a note but then it moves after I create it. This happens consistently for me. Hoping an update will fix it..Version: 3.5.2
Probably the best ebook app.MapleRead has incredible flexibility, customability and power; most importantly, it is actively supported when many similar apps have fallen by the wayside. Highly recommended..Version: 3.1
Better than Books but Not Yet There Where Marvin 3 Already WasIroning out some errors, developers are helpful. Sync not yet working again, will write more when it does..Version: 5.9
Is there a voice thing like voice dream?I just got the app and I loved it ! I just wish there is free voices in this app..Version: 4.8
The only ePub reader I useExcellent app. I use it every day. I’m very happy they increased the size of the Description Edit box!!.Version: 4.1
Best eReader, The Hunt is OverAmazing application, thank you all so much for your hard work! After switching to MapleReaderSE I haven't felt a single itch or urge to switch ebook readers again. It makes tablet and phone reading a pleasure and feels like the natural companion to Calibre in the eReader ecosystem. My eReader Journey: BluefireReader -> Books(apple) -> Kindle -> Marvin 3 -> FBReader -> MapleReaderSE (for good!).Version: 5.2.1
Fantastic reader!Superb flexible reading app. Also, developers are frequently adding new tweaks and are responsive to clients..Version: 4.8.1
The one and only!First, let it be known, this is only my second review on the App Store in the past 20 years. In that period of time I have ventured to find an epub reader that would provide maximum utility, ease of library management and a user interface that is both pleasing to the eye and intuitively formatted. I have struggled over the years to manage my rather large e-book library, now exceeding 10,000 books. As you can imagine, the size of the library has posed many problems in the traditional Apple Books ((formally iBooks) application, which requires iCloud storage for there to be full and potentially ready Accessibility to books as required across devices. Unfortunately, iCloud has a notorious habit of, offloading books from the device to the cloud significantly encumbering accessibility to books as may be needed. Whether it be the extremely efficient library management, particularly of such a large volume of books, it’s ease, importation and exportation of books, the tailoring to personal needs as it relates to user interface (the ability to alter the size of the image or text when viewing the library, in list or grid mode, means to access meta data, change e-book covers, adjust title or author or series as needed), multiple options for customizing the organization of the library (by author, by title, date added/read/modified, series, and tags for grouping by topic or relevancy) or the reading experience (adjusting, text size, text in paragraph spacing, page look and feel/animation) [to name just a few] together with the developers ongoing and regular attention to an effort to maintain this application at the cutting edge of the e-book reading experience, there is nothing that holds a candle to this application anywhere, for any device, at any time past or present!.Version: 5.6.2
Favorite ebook readerThis is my favorite non Apple ebook reader. The developer is super responsive too..Version: 3.5.2
Overall good, but two strong suggestions to the developersFirst off, I like the app overall. I use it with my Calibre library and it works great. I have on occasion used the server function also but not that often. The interface is good but the tagging and organizing of the books in the app is definitely not intuitive. I have done a lot of Human interface design in my career and am confident that with a little work this part of the interface could be greatly improved. My biggest issue is the cloud sync. It doesn’t really fit what I would consider a typical use case for the app. The scenario it needs to handle is ‘the user has been reading a book on their iPad. They head out of the house without the iPad and find they have some time on their hands so they go to their iPHone and pull up the book, but it isn’t synced to their last position because they didn’t consider syncing the book on the iPad the last time they put it down’. Simple solution is to support auto cloud sync. It could be a user preference, but the book position would be updated whenever an appropriate event occurred - e.g., every 15 minutes, when the iPad is put in sleep mode, when the book is closed and another is open. I’m sure there are other events that would also make sense..Version: 4.0
Filled with passion! So many wonderful little touches & options mimicking how one reads a real book, best ereader app & it’s not even close! thank you!.Version: 5.6.1
No CBZ supportCan’t read CBZ. A bit complicate app, but the one that was the closest to my need..Version: 3.3
Single Column LandscapeI buy DRM free epub tech books. These books have aside sections in them when they will show a command that you might type in on your computer. I have an iPad Pro — nice big screen with a good stand for landscape orientation. When I read my epub tech books in Apple Books, that text in those asides gets cutoff in landscape mode. Really weird because landscape is wider than portrait, but Apple Books INSISTS on putting 2 columns (or pages if you prefer) when in landscape orientation. I just wanted 1 column in landscape. Not Apple Books, or any of the other 6 or so readers I tried from the App Store would let me decide how many columns I wanted. This one did. It gets 5 stars because it’s the ONLY one. You might not agree with my assessment, but when you are trying to understand something technical, and the last detail is just cutoff, the irritation just compounds each time it happens. My search is over, and I can read in peace. Thank you..Version: 4.0
Great app.Love this app. I finally found an ebook reader and server that has cloud syncing options. Great reading options, and has allowed me to put my icalibre catalog on my iPad and sync for my iPhone for reading..Version: 3.5.2
MarginsPlease allow more fonts (user or built in) and margin settings ! Minus two for huge margins on top and sides like on iBooks..Version: 1.0
ExcellentThis version seems again to do everything an epub reader ought to do..Version: 3.0.4
Parfait pour mes besoinsExcellente application pour lire et annoter des epub ou des pdf. De plus, l'application permet d'ajouter des livres simplement (sur le même réseau wifi avec un ordinateur)..Version: 1.6.2
