The New Yorker App Comments & Reviews

The New Yorker Positive Reviews

Mostly good, some opportunities to really delightThe app satisfies on most fronts. I can comfortably read shorter articles, search through the archive and save stories to my library, listen to incredible voice actors narrate longer pieces, and mindlessly (but enjoyably) flick through an endless digital stack of cartoons. There are three main features that would greatly improve my experience: 1. Narrated articles from the archive. The voice actors who narrate the articles are outstanding. However, the practice of providing articles read aloud seems to only go back to 2018 or so. That’s a lot of the archive left unvocalized. My preference would be to have voice actors read at least some of the more major/famous stories. Alternatively, the use of synthetic voices could provide a way to make older stories accessible in a different format. 2. Allow saving articles to reading lists, not just a single library. I comb through the archive quite a bit. As a result, I’ve saved a lot of articles to my library. Right now it’s especially hard to scroll through all my saved stories. It’d be really great to have some library folder structure to organize the content I find and save. 3. Better browsing by topic/author. There have been countless times where I read someone in the magazine, really liked what they wrote, and want to see all their contributions. On the web, this is really easy. It’s much clunkier in the app. Having collections based on topics or themes to better surface stories from the archive would also be nice..Version: 8.9.1

July 2022, forced app upgrade, dumped old saved issuesLongtime print - online subscriber and reader here. Was pleased that with prior “print edition” app i could download AND SAVE issues to view on a large-screen ipad, or a mini for airplane reading. After a forced app upgrade years ago, all my saved full issues deleted, had to redownload each and every one. On a rural connection DSL it takes a minute per issue and mind numbing icon stroking and scrolling. July 2022, again, the app is upgraded, all my saved issues are not ported to the upgraded app. I got to a google-fiber wifi to download issues, all over again. (Edited) at first it looked like i could only download current year issues. Then i went back and noticed a “year” scroll menu (top right, then bottom) to allow prior-year issue download. Back to 2008. So, next app upgrade, will CN continue to refresh archives, or will the old bits just vanish? Twice, issues were not imported in the app upgrade. Remember, readers. Your online media are ephemeral. If you value the content, save the print edition, because CondeNaste may or may not continue to refresh any paid-for archive of digital content. Fortunately, my “saved articles” list, which was initially blank after the upgrade, reappeared after a minute or two- i think it is intact?. So, rating: content quality, 5 stars. Delivery and loss of archives, zero stars. Old issues have been deleted twice, now..Version: 7.2.0

Decent, but buggy and missing features + useless help lineNow that I can actually scroll through an issue in the right order, this app at least now has most of what I needed from the old one that they just silently killed. It's still kind of a shame that I'm basically reading an embedded browser view rather than something that actually looks like the magazine (all text with ads as interstitials between articles). And I still don't understand at all why there's no feature to see all the cartoons in an issue. For now, the old app still works on my phone (but not my tablet), so I've been using that to look at all the cartoons after I finish an issue. I've noticed that when this app gets backgrounded on my phone, if it's unloaded from memory, it'll show me a blank screen instead of the article I was on. The only way to get back to the article is to exit to the table of contents and go back in, but this loses my place. I tried to report this bug via the help email, and was first given instructions on how to log in and then told to contact Apple Support. It's amazing how impossible it is to successfully report bugs on this app, which doesn't give me any confidence that it'll improve. It's really a shame because I enjoy the content of the New Yorker and had been using the old app as my primary way of reading for the five years I've been a subscriber. Sadly, the old NYer Print app crashes on my iPad. The constant annoyances on the new app really make me wonder if it's worth dealing with sometimes. I shouldn't be paying the subscriber rate just to be annoyed..Version: 6.7.0

Great content, infuriating appI really detest this app, which has a number of infuriating characteristics. First, the app defaults to the Top Stories tab even if it’s been only about an hour since you’ve been in the middle of a story in the Magazine tab. Second, while it will keep your place in a story, it will not keep you place in your downloaded magazines. That is, after its default to Top Stories, you need to locate both the issue you were reading and navigate to the article, where it will have more-or-less kept your place. Ideally, when it opens it should default to where you were, not to Top Stories, but if it does, it should immediately go to the issue, article and place in the article you were in the process of reading when you click on the Magazine tab. And then, there is an real design problem: when you are not connected to the internet (example: on the subway between stations), when you click on the Magazine tab to access your downloaded magazines, there is a very substantial delay in opening the that tab. This should be immediate in the absence of internet connectivity. The New Yorker, which is itself indispensable, could do much better by its users..Version: 10.6.13

Needs improvementThe app is designed well, the typography is great and the reading experience is overall satisfying. Unfortunately it also lacks critical features from an app designed to be a reader: 1. Mark as read: Articles or issues should give the option to be marked as read — or automatically marked as read. Many a times I scroll through the previous issues to see which issue I haven’t finished yet at. 2. Sync with audio: Often times I prefer to read the article but cannot at the moment. In such cases, having the option of listening is great, however if I’m not through listening and decide to decide to finish the article by reading. It is not possible to find where I was left off. There should be a sink feature where the audio can mark until where the user has listened to the article..Version: 8.9.3

Could be betterI don’t think that this a great app. If I leave in the middle of reading an article, when I come back to the app it automatically takes me to the home screen, meaning I usually will have to make several clicks, trying to remember in which print issue the article is, etc. Also, I’m often getting signed out, meaning I need to sign in again, and then it says that that I don’t have a valid subscription or something like that…. Also, for my taste, there’s much too much politics and current events in the New Yorker. I prefer more cultural offerings. I’m sick of politics and get enough of it everywhere else – in the Times, in podcasts, on late-night…. The New Yorker’s writers and editors can make any subject interesting, but now there are so many articles which I don’t read due to lack of inherent interest on my part. The New Yorker should be better than that. Oh – the app isn’t good in landscape, the text is too wide. I don’t enjoy portrait orientation and changing the orientation of my iPad..Version: 10.6.14

Good, could be greatI have only been using the app as a subscriber for about one month. Two big gripes that I have are related to the listening features. 1) Why do I have the options to listen to articles at 1.2x, 1.5x, or 2x normal speed but only have one option to the slow down the audio at .5 speed? This is the New Yorker, not a children’s book. Who in the world can comprehend the New Yorker at 1.5x or 2x speed with any enjoyment? Please provide some additional options at around .9 or .8x speed. 2) Why do only some articles get the listening option added whereas others do not? And some articles with the listening option do not play any audio due to an error message that pops up. Overall, it’s a good app, but not on par with the physical magazine experience..Version: 11.3.3

Great overall - crossword doesn’t saveLove the overall flow and design. I just have one issue with it: normally when I’m reading an article I can close my phone, even quit the app and when I re-open, it will bring me to right where I was on the article (very helpful for longer ones). However, the same is not true for the crosswords, which is the main reason I use the app (I read the hard copy more). I love the collaborative feature and have discovered that if I open the crossword with the link it provides in my browser, my work is saved and all is good. However, if I just use the app to fill in the crossword, the moment I close my phone or take a phone call, I’m sent back to the home page. Often, when I find the same crossword again (which isn’t straightforward because they aren’t listed by date in the search), my work is saved. But occasionally the board is wiped clean! Very frustrating..Version: 5.2.1

Don’t use Apple alternative email to sign inI am a first time subscriber. I made a big mistake when I signed in for the first time; I used the alternative email Apple provided. Now i had to call customer service to reset my info in order to read on the website. ITS A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE APP AFTER YOU SIGNED IN USING AN ALTERNATIVE EMAIL THOUGH. Even with delete and reinstalling the app, I could not use the original email to get into my account. Whenever I reinstall it would still go to the alternative Apple email and prevent me from using the app. I tried to”sign-in-with-another-email” , the first 10 times it would resend a sign in link to my email, after that it stopped responding, as if it suspects I’m a bot. Please change this feature and allow me to delete all info and reset the app. It’s so much easier to function in the modern world with a functional app..Version: 8.9.5

The Latest BugI love the New Yorker and the app! I’ve been using it for a few years without any major problems. The only issue is with some of the newer updates and “The Latest” section that recently was introduced on the mobile app. I find that it never updates to the most recent when you click “All latest stories” and if I refresh that specific page to see them, it says there is no internet connection which I know isn’t true because I have no issue with any other part of the app or with my phones connectivity in general. I love this app and magazine and just wish that part could be fixed so I don’t have to use my laptop to see if there’s any distal stories I’ve missed.Version: 11.0.2

No Bookmarked Progress, Magazines Don’t Download as PDFsThe last time I subscribed to the New Yorker was about six years ago. As with public library borrows, you could download issues of the magazine as PDFs to be opened in the reader of your choice. Additionally, you could keep your progress within a particularly long article within the app. Fast-forward to the new and improved version of the app. Downloaded magazines seem only accessible within the app, which destroys the effect of the magazine layout. Worse still, the app refreshes even if you haven’t closed it and are only checking another app for a moment. This means you not only lose your place in the story; you’re also pulled back to the landing content of the app, which might never have interested you in the first place. Additionally, you cannot bookmark your progress in an article or a downloaded magazine; you can only bookmark an individual article without progress. You can’t even highlight a passage to give you a clue where you left off, which is why I spend more time searching for my place in Aviv’s long piece on Alice Munro than I do reading the article itself. I only just subscribed a week ago and am thinking of cancelling my subscription..Version: 10.6.2

A lot of info packed into a tiny space, quite well.I have not been one that has been fully converted to reading only digital versions of my favorite magazines. The first one that I switched over from was National Geographic, reason being…. it made the pictures even more spectacular. It took me time to start getting into reading The New Yorker especially on my iPhone and while isn’t perfect, can still be a bit clunky and the screen can still get crowded, but it certainly is improving all the time, and its refreshing to be able to read it on the go, especially when I want to catch up on both current and old articles from previous issues..Version: 9.3.0

It’s a bit hit or miss whether the iPad App worksI only started reading the magazine on my iPad about five months ago, and am underwhelmed by the experience. Sometimes the App works, meaning that I can access all the stories from the magazine, and sometimes it doesn’t. The most recent magazine, for example (November 19, 2018) gives me only three “Goings on About Town” items - nothing else. I have closed and opened the App, I have logged out and back in, and even removed and re-installed the App, all with the same result. It would be OK if this was the only time something went wrong - on at least two occasions in the last three months the magazine completely failed to download, and/or told me I didn’t have a subscription. In contrast, I have never had any issues with the iPhone App, which I have been happily using for several years..Version: 3.3

Some issuesThis app keeps saying my subscription is not active after I’ve confirmed my subscription multiple times. I’ve needed to put in my account number and zip multiple times a day. With the address confirmation option when you choose the state it still shows as needing to be entered so it doesn’t work, you can only use the account number option (at least one works I guess, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to link it at all) It’s pretty infuriating. I’m also surprised there isn’t a dark mode option. That will be a re-subscription dealbreaker for me to be honest. Last, It would be nice if one of the main links on the bottom took you straight to the crosswords instead of scrolling vaguely to the upper middle of the article list every time..Version: 8.9.0

The app really needs workI know you have only had like 30 years to get a decent functional app, but maybe prioritize it now? Signs itself out randomly and makes it impossible to sign back picture don’t align with the article titles in the list of articles in “current issue” I search short fiction then select a story and I get a completely random article. Repeatedly. Did someone hire his old college friend’s god son to develop this? I quit the app last year because the app was (hint not sap, not pap, but cr…yeah. (And there is a bit too much shallow pop culture stuff these days). But I missed it so in our modern wilderness and resubscribed this year. Still…. The app. The app! Onward and upward.. I hope!.Version: 11.2.2

ImprovementsI love reading The New Yorker in print form, but I find the app to be just as good. It’s very convenient for anyone who wants to read TNY when they have downtime; be that on the train, an Uber, downtime at work, etc. It’s smooth and easy to navigate. They recently just extended the amount of articles you’re able to bookmark. Before, you had a certain amount before it capped you. The only thing I wish they would incorporate is the dark-mode screen feature. Maybe they don’t want to add it because they’re trying to keep the same aesthetic and feel of the magazine in the app form, but having that option would be icing on the cake..Version: 4.3.0

Could be greatI love a lot of things about this app, but two things I really don’t like: - I wish they would add a dark mode! I often read at night before bed, and even with my screen lighting turned down and orange-y night mode on, the white is annoying. - It used to be that when I closed the app, or switched to another app and back, it would return me to the same place in whatever story I was reading. But since some recent update, I now often see a blank white screen when I reopen the new yorker app, and when I toggle back to the story I’m on, I get thrown back to the top of the article. Needless to say New Yorker stories can be quite long, so this is discouraging..Version: 6.5.1

App stopped workingAll of a sudden this app just stopped functioning,I Have a subscription through Apple Pay to the New Yorker I should be able to access this app I cannot. Customer support has been useless if I could rate it a zero I would. After contacting New Yorker, by phone, they totally fixed my issue. Thanks ! It has stopped working again, so I lowered my stars to one If I could give it zero would I spent hours on this to no avail. I also wrote a very detailed email to them that they never responded to. Thanks a lot New Yorker. Problem solved. thanks, New Yorker.Version: 8.2.4

Pretty clunkyThis app would be so much better if every time I opened it I wouldn’t have to log in, multiple times. Also, opening the app on my IPhone or IPad and then clicking on something to read, only to have it take me to the New Yorker webpage, where I have to log in (again), before getting redirected is a PITA. I get it, these are “white people problems” but, if you’re charging a substantial amount for a subscription than the in app experience should be smooth and seamless, preferably with no ads and very similar to how it would feel if I were reading an actual digital magazine and not an website pretending to be a digital magazine. Namaste..Version: 10.7.2

Why am I paying to see sketchy ads?I’m a paying subscriber and was surprised to see ads throughout the app. I subscribed expecting a premium, distraction-free reading experience, but the presence of banner and sponsored content undermines that. The journalism itself remains excellent, and the app is generally smooth to use, but the ad experience feels out of step with a paid product. If ads are going to remain for subscribers, that should be clearly communicated upfront. Ideally, there would be an ad-free tier for paying readers who want a cleaner, more immersive experience. As it stands, the content quality is top-tier, but the value proposition of the subscription inside the app feels diminished..Version: 11.2.5

Love the magazine, used to love the audio version, but hate the transition to automatedI've read the print version for decades and loved getting the audio version (through various sources, including audible). I used to listen to all available articles while commuting. One of the best features (besides the excellent writing) was high/quality narration. It could even draw me into to stories that I didn't think I'd be interested in. Recently more and more of the articles are rest by automated voices and I can't stand it. I keep trying, but inevitably switch it off 5 minutes in because the sound is so annoying. Please bring back human narrators!!.Version: 10.6.7

Lifetime ReaderI grew up reading my mom‘s copies of The New Yorker. Before I could actually understand most I always loved the fiction and reading the comics. I would look forward to every new issue and as I got older, I started reading things that I was curious about and it was the first magazine that opened my eyes to the world. More so than Cosmo or other girly magazines that had sex and boyfriend quizzes that I wasn’t taking because when I was 16 I didn’t have many boyfriends. Bravo New Yorker for a brilliant 100 years! I can’t wait for the festival in October!!!.Version: 10.7.3

Newly LoveI’m new to TNY (shocking, I know) and absolutely love it. As for the app, it’s v simple and clean which I like; however, I have two suggestions for improvement. First, the ability to archive or favorite articles. I know there’s a “save” feature but I use it more as a “save to read later” feature, as I’m sure many other users do as well. Second, the ability to highlight favorite passages and come back to them. Some articles are extensively long yet only a few sentences or paragraphs might be meaningful (to me). Medium has both of these features and I find them v useful..Version: 5.3.2

Great app - I’m a new fan of the new yorkerIt works great, I like that it always brings me back to where I left off. The UI is clean and works without any issues. I just wish we were able to comment on certain articles, I’d love to be able to read what other people think of certain articles and participate in discussions. Also, it would be REALLY cool if they added reading time for each article, so that I can plan my reading depending on how much time I have..Version: 3.3

Why a 5 starFor one who understands and appreciates proper grammar, sentence structure as well as a holistic approach to capturing broad culture scriptures in a magazine...the New Yorker Magazine is the answer. #1newyorker.Version: 3.4

Good App, love the Magazine. This is from a Real liberal moderate from Canada. The person who gave this app and the magazine content one star and says he hates he magazine and says he’s Canadian is not likely to be Canadian, rather just another blind Trumpster hiding behind my flag for legitimacy. Good Luck America, this magazine is a shining beacon amongst an otherwise bleak dystopian nightmare that is Trumps America..Version: 3.3

A few issuesThree things: frequently signed out, and signing in is sometimes a fraught process; very poor performance, especially on launch; no dark mode..Version: 10.4.1

Generally decent app and experienceI would like a dark mode feature, or something to adjust brightness at night.Version: 8.9.5

Playback speedPlease add a .75 or .8 playback speed (like your contemporaries have) this would be greatly appreciated.Version: 10.8.0

Outstanding!Phenomenal writing, terrific cultural range, fearless journalism. I’m a long-time subscriber and consider it essential reading..Version: 11.2.2

Annoying app featureThe app consistently kicks you out of the article you are reading and defaults back to the home page, even when you do not close the app. This is extremely frustrating!.Version: 11.0.3

I don’t knowI don’t know much about the app. But The New Yorker has the best writing around..Version: 11.0.1

Not greatThe articles only download the first paragraph. A bit crummy really in terms of a working app..Version: 10.8.1

Great app; no dark mode :(I love this app, but I really wish I could use it before going to sleep, without getting exposed to too much light!.Version: 10.6.2

Needs dark mode featureCan’t enable dark mode on the app which is super unfortunate.Version: 8.6

Continuing OutstandingFirst among many. The one source for new writings, best for continuity when that really counts. In times of backward reverses, the dependable forward momentum..Version: 10.6.1

New YorkerLove this app. Always recognizes me. Always opens and the audio short fiction has been game a changer for me. I never miss an issue.Version: 9.3.0

Buggy, fussy, frustrating. At least twice a year, the app refuses to recognize that I have a subscription, and kicks me out without letting me be able to sign back in. I can only sign back in after I have removed and reinstalled the app at least twice, and it gets exhausting to have to maintain this app. The developers have done a really poor job of creating a positive user experience, and I really, really miss the old app that existed before..Version: 8.9.2

Dark mode is neededThis app desperately needs a dark mode… while I love the content it’s practically impossible to read in the dark at night I shouldn’t need to have peripheral lights on in order to open the app without being blinded And if I’m going to have lights on - ill just read the print edition instead Not having a dark mode acts as a deterrent from even using the app - to a point where it becomes an issue of accessibility.Version: 8.9.0

Please add dark modeAll very nice. The quality of the magazine is unbeatable. I would also appreciate a search by topic of interest, like science..Version: 6.8.0

It is more than a magazineIt is also a great newspaper. The coverage of the war in Ukraine is thorough with feet on the ground Excluding puzzles and cartoons I receive on average 3 emails a day about current and past cultural happenings movies, plays, books. Suffice it to say The Yorker is a if not the top source of current as well as past events.Version: 6.7.0
