Speechify – Text to Speech PDF Positive Reviews
Beware Monthly Word LimitWhile this a good service and app, things could definitely be improved. My biggest qualm so far is that there is a monthly word limit at which point you are unable to use most of the voice options and are stuck with a robotic sounding woman’s name. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts while I work or multitask and so I was excited to use Speechify to listen to books that do not have Audiobook companions, pdfs, and online content. Within about two weeks I hit the monthly word limit and am now unable to really use the service because the non-enhanced/premium voice option is not very good.
Secondly, while this service does have a broad range of voices in English some are better than others in terms of sounding less robotic or monotone when reading aloud and so there are really only four or five that I found myself using regularly. Some of the voices sound more natural and are good with pacing and understanding how to read a document and others not so much. For example, occasionally a word or two will be skipped by the voice or a part of a document will be read more literally than it is meant to. For example, when “….” is used to imply a pause the voices are likely to pronounce “dot dot dot” at the same speed and pacing as the rest of a document or e-book.
I will wait and see what if any improvements are made to the service to determine if I will keep paying for it once the renewal date comes up..InwashVersion: 2.29.2
Absolutely Love ItI’m obsessed with this app. I never go into the App Store to rate apps, but this is such a game changer I had to. I initially got it to support my ADHD and heavy work schedule throughout my masters program, but there’s no way I’ll get rid of this as I move into my profession. The features in this app are incomparable, especially with the latest update. I was dying for the ability to highlight text and add notes and now we can. This has been the best purchase I’ve ever made and well worth the cost. I have to commute between clients for work and now each week I can download the required research articles, easily drop them in, and have AI summarize them for me. This enables me to listen to the full article while commuting and then utilize the AI summarization for review. Voice output and options are awesome - so many. I’ll stick with Gwenny P forever though it’s a great option. You can even quiz yourself on content and now have it structured as a podcast if that format of info holds your attention more. The app owners clearly take user feedback well and implement it. The only issue I have is that sometimes it glitches, but that’s been rare/temporary and honestly every technological advancement does that it comes with the territory. It’s never lasted long enough to impact my use of the app. Download this app immediately if you’re anxious about keeping up with readings while working full time or just to read books - it has a great bookstore/library as well. Thank you so much for this app I love it.TimonAndPumbaaVersion: 5.0.1
Audible or Speechify?I spent hours comparing text to speech apps, and by far, Speechify has some of the best premium HD voices. I even considered dropping Audible, so that I could pay for an unlimited amount of HD voice listening time; however, while the HD voices are great, they’re not reliable enough for me to consider them as a replacement for Audible just yet. At times, they’re slow to load or glitchy. I wasted a good 200 or so words listening to Gwyneth lisp her way through sentences as if she was lapsing into a different language. I fiddled with her speech rate trying to remedy the problem, but it was to no avail. I had to switch to Michael. Michael read through everything perfectly, but he too had trouble staying on task. Even though I had plenty of of HD listening words left, he would intermittently cut out and be replaced by the British Male speaking voice. With all things considered, this is an app worthy of downloading. It does a respectable job transferring words from pictures—better than most. Sometimes, to my astonishment, it can read my handwriting. It hasn’t crashed, and apart from the HD voices, the standard voices seem quite reliable. I like that I can earn HD words the more I listen, and that there’s enough to stay entertained with in the free version. With a bit more perfecting, Audible might find itself facing the boot in favor of this nifty little app. For now, Audible is safe from the chopping block..ManxiepooVersion: 2.18.5
A LIFE SAVER!My 1st time using my time to review an app ever! I’m in grad school and always have to read a lot of research papers and reading really isn’t my favorite! This has helped decrease the overwhelming feeling of reading a lot pages of assigned reading! I wish instead of paying about $12 every month, the app had a one time PERMANENT purchase option (not just yearly) for a reasonable price for broke college students especially! Something affordable where I’m only charged one time and that’s it! Because it’s too expensive for me to pay for it at the moment, I’m using the free version and I wish I could highlight w/the free version! Please make highlighting an option in the free version. Also cropping is a pain in the behind because as soon as I move one corner, the other corner shifts along with it. Also I don’t like how once I’ve moved a file in a folder, I can’t seem to move it back to being a file in the home/front page that’s no longer in a folder. As my classes are changing each semester, so are my folders and I would like to be able to keep certain files but delete folders! Also the other ways to important documents from google docs hasn’t worked for me. I’ve only been able to just take pictures of pdf documents, and that’s the only way that’s been working for me. And yes I’ve watched the ‘how to upload’ videos and followed them easily but it still didn’t work for me. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m using the feee option! Thank you for creating this app, it’s been helpful so far!!!.Truth teller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Version: 2.7
Good for people who read novels. This app means so much to me I am some one who reads really slowly and struggle with some words some times and this app helps me get by in life since I’m able to listen to my web novels stories that get me by in life in a sense of closure and peace it makes me feel like I’m in a whole different world when I focus on hearing the words instead of having to read it for some one like me who struggles a lot to read new words and so it let’s me be able to muti task while reading for example when I’m gaming or doing dishs or have a lot of loud and distracting noises near me that I normally would not be able to focus on if I read it by my self and it’s useful to me when I’m on the train and when I’m going out for walks it’s also helps getting a lot of chapters at once you can upload a web link of the chapters you trying to read and it can add 10 chapters at once for you making you be able to enjoy an hour of more of reading while doing such things as dishs where your hands get wet and you can even add books and pdfs such as Harry Potter and listen to it in 8 hours based on how fast you have the words read to you. You are also able to add pdfs and stuff which help with school, and work when you have to read things that would normally be very annoying and it even saves for you what you read for if you ever want to read it again I highly recommend this app to other people who love reading or need help with reading in your daily life it can even read things to you on computer for example if your on social media and want it to read to you a tweet or redit post..Renc6Version: 2.25.2
I love speechifyGonna be honest. I have only ever listened to fanfiction read to me off ao3. The amount of fanfiction I have listened to in the past two years with this app is staggering and probably not healthy. But I work a job where I have to wear a head set to protect my hearing and listening to music gets boring after listening to the same stuff for so long. So, yes, sometimes the AI lady pronounces something silly or wrong and sometimes formatting an author will do on a piece can screw with the AI but honestly nothing has bothered me enough to stop using it and I don’t exactly have a lot of patience with stuff that doesn’t work. If you have a link to a pdf of literally anything it’ll read it to you and you can even turn your phone off while it does. The ONLY and I mean ONLY issue I have with speechify is it drains your battery TERRIBLY. When I originally started using this app I had an older iPhone 12 and whewww it just did not last I had my phone constantly on charge. I have a new iPhone 15 now and though it still does drain the battery it’s not as quick but my phone still ends up on the charger before I leave work. Not to end this on a bad note, I recommend speechify to anyone I know who talks about how they don’t have time to read or has trouble with sitting and reading something. It’s genuinely exactly what I was looking for in a read-it-to-me app! I highly recommend!!.FunfaxwithkaitVersion: 3.3.2
AwesomeI too have dyslexia. And I hated school for this reason. I couldn’t read stuff like my friends. I was always behind. I took so long to do homework because of it I couldn’t go out and play with my friends. I hated it. I cried and fought with my mom a lot. They put me in a special reading class to try to teach me how to turn the letters and words around. I even reverse numbers sometimes. When I was in first grade I had a teacher who would yell at me for not being able to read instead of trying to help me. So my parents held me back and put me in a different school. Where the teacher had seen it before and knew the signs for dyslexia. And I was tested and found out that’s what it was. I appreciate so much you creating this app. I do wish it didn’t cost so much. I understand you have to pay for the development and to keep it up to date. But that is a lot. I did teach myself to read and I do read books. But it does take me a lot longer than everyone else because of the dyslexia. But I do it anyway and even enjoy reading now. When I was a kid you would never see me read. But again thanks for creating an app that helps with that. I just wish the cost was lower I can’t afford that much a year at one time. Or if you had smaller monthly costs too that would be better for someone like me. Thanks again. I will use the free version for now. 👍🏻.Beth iPhone 16 Pro MaxVersion: 2.10.0
Excellent Idea for dyslexicsIt is an excellent idea for dyslexics. The only problem: some words that are spelled identical are pronounced in America differently depending on their meaning. Even though you have a “Gwenith Paltrow reading it, the same problem exists. Might you think of asking retired teachers to donate a fully read book, or members of families with dyslexics—who are college grads, such as myself—to donate time to read for your library? It is embarrassing to a dyslexics to use out-of-content pronunciations as an adult. This is why I couldn’t give you 5 stars. My son who is dyslexic had a “reader” at Syracuse and graduated with Honors. He also has no short-term memory. All his schooling was based around those deficits and he is a success story.
You may have more people than you could imagine willing to contribute to your effort to keep the cost of building a Library of Congress for dyslexics. By the way, the Library of Congress offers a free service for the blind and aged. You may consider asking for some of their prerecorded material for this effort to rapidly expand your offer and back build into your program grammar so that content determines pronunciation. These sources might improve the sound of the reading so it is less like a computer reading a book. Even MS Word has an improved read back of material. I think this is a great start to your program and wish you much success in your endeavor as English as spoken in America will be your greatest challenge..Miki#1Version: 2.19.0
WOW!So helpful with ADHD. It tells you how many minutes it’ll take to read, taking away SO much of the intimidation I get from having to read anything. Pause at any time. It highlights the full sentence it’s on and follows along word-by-word “double highlighted.” It allows for dark mode. Love that for my light sensitivity! Tap the word you want it to start reading at if you’re skipping around. It’ll do exactly what you ask it to do. I wasn’t expecting it to be so good. I scanned two pages of my textbook. It even got the fine print and didn’t skip around to different paragraphs in a dumb way—even though the margins and pictures are designed in an awful way even for a human to read (thanks, dear engineers too cheap or stupid to hire real graphic designers with typography skills). It even read “g/mm^3” as “grams per cubic millimeter,” not “g slash m m carrot 3.” To top it off, the voice isn’t entirely annoying. The best automated voice imo, and believe me I’ve tried a ton. Maybe you can change the voice, but idk bc I just started playing with the app. Now I’m writing this review when I should be reading my textbook. Anyway, go ahead and download this app if you’re even on this page considering it—which ofc you are if you’re reading this rn. Good day.
Edit—a few minutes later 🙃: Yes, you can change the voice. There are MANY to choose from! Excited to try them..SleekbeansVersion: 2.18.5
No LIEThat’s the absolute truth I’ve had severe ADHD and as you get older… i’m a 55 year-old still teaching part-time teacher… And it’s very hard for me to read because I’m 25 steps ahead now I’m naturally 100% auditory/visual learner… I’ve been an artist since I was four years old prodigy… And I’m not bragging, but Dev this program you can process and I write now to professionally… Can you believe that I barely graduated high school because my reading comprehension was terrible… Actually, my high school as well as many other Towson like Raven high school very myopic in the administration in the upper levels extremely poor… Baltimore at that time had one of the worst reading scores, but as Einstein says books are a mass production to scheme…. He was terrible at math, but love physics and you think I’m to see three dimensions just like my Angelo… And many other great people who have studied in the 3D world…. of the mindset that all of us have the ability to leave our monkey mind sets behind completely once we hit about 20% of our brain usage. It’s like magic… The government in the military knows this and they are keeping us in a state of war and they are trying to keep the world and this is not just the US. The Best App for Research Papers, Discussion Posts and LSAT Prep!!!I usually don’t leave app reviews, but this app is so incredible that it deserved one!
As a Pre-Law student in my junior year with a non-verbal learning disability, focusing on articles for a long period of time is extremely hard for me as I tend to get distracted easily. Speechify has become my new secret weapon in order to boost my productivity while also writing my research papers and or discussion posts for class. This app allows me the benefits of having my articles read out loud to me in a realistic voice like an audio book which is something that I enjoy (my favorites so far are Kylie and Sydney from Australia) and in the speed that I want them to be read at (I usually go somewhere in between 1.3-1.5 depending on the articles length) all the while writing research papers and discussion posts that I can hear read back to me in order to check for any errors.
This app is the only subscription based app that I would actually pay for as I feel like it’s a worthy investment to my education in the long run as I plan on going to Graduate school in the future. The student education discount Speechify offers of 50% off the annual premium subscription (that can be found on their website) makes speechify a much more accessible tool to college students. I would definitely recommend this app to anyone looking for a way to boost productivity. Thank you all so much for making an app that not only supports but helps those with learning disabilities have equal access to education. I definitely plan on using Speechify for my LSAT prep next semester!!!.Bekah07!Version: 2.27.7
Great idea, but buggy and overpricedI originally saw ads for Speechify absolutely everywhere and thought it looked interesting, but didn’t really download it until I realized that there was no way I could finish 100 pages in the span of three hours (as I am a slow reader). So, with hopes of being able to finish the two fifty-page chapters in less than two hours, I downloaded Speechify.
The app is great in the sense that you get to choose what you read, how fast it is read to you, and what voice you want it to be read in. And for the first 1000 or so words, it is free. But as a broke college student with many essays, textbooks, emails, and overall assignments that require reading, the roughly $12/month charge is not very forgiving. It makes sense—for what the app is, it makes sense to charge a small fee for the service. But $12 seemed pricy to me.
The reading can be a bit wild at times. At the end of some pages (read by the app), I get a stream of random numbers and letters that do not appear anywhere in my reading. I have also noticed that if the scanned pages are not perfectly lined up horizontally, the reading might skip the first word of the line, resulting in confusion if you are reading at 1.7x speed like I am.
Overall, though, the app is very helpful, and I would recommend it to my friends that can afford to pay for a subscription as to continue using the app. It helps me to read faster, focus, or even multitask every so often. It’s a fantastic idea for an app, but some tweaks might be appreciated..PocketMaceVersion: 2.19.3
Worlds greatest AppI just wish I had Speechify when I was a young girl I found out I was dyslexic when I was taking eighth grade over for the second time. They knew I couldn’t comprehend they knew I could read but the problem was I wasn’t retaining it and it was extremely difficult but their practice and wanted to show that I’m not stupid even though I was in special ed classes as well I started reading more and more and more two books at the same time then I got up to three books at the same time finishing them and just expanding my mind today because I was not in school and work you’re on a computer I’ve kind of gone backwards but I’m trying again I’m back in college and 53 years of age to get a bachelors degree not in my first choice and love but it nonetheless it is still business and I look forward to this the only problem I have is the price that needs to come down so that more people can use it because I’m doing the three day trial but I will not be able to afford the price of the whole program if I can get it together I will but anyone that reads this it’s a great app and it does work and for those children that need the help it’s worth of money and it’s worth the money for me I just cannot afford it on a fixed income thank you and God bless..KKC ILVersion: 2.19.6
Never Reading An Article On My Own Again....This was my first time using the app, it can be hard for me to read because of my neuro-divergence and this app worked wonderfully for me. I tried to read an article that I was really interested in by myself three times and could not get through it. So I search text to speech apps, found this and I just finished the article. I am so thrilled to have read it and I retained the information. Now I am formulating my thoughts on the article and I figured I would come over and rate the app because it was really wonderful for me!! The narration (or text to speech) was very realistic, it was not super choppy or very “AI- ish”. It pronounced everything very well even things I thought it would mess up ... this article I just read would be a doozy for most text to speech apps and this one BREEZED right through. I LOVE the MULTIPLE playback speeds, as I could change it for an article that I want to pay closer attention too, I can slow it down even more. I also really appreciated the sentence being highlighted and the current word being double highlighted, it really helped me focus!! Cliff really put tremendous thought into this app and it shows. I think I might even pay for the premium sub to get the narrators voice ...I really liked him LOL..AsdfkcsyilvdtiveyjsVersion: 2.4.6
Awesome Creation! This is most definitely one of the most effective and productive process assisting programs ever created! It’s absolutely incredible! You can increase your ability and triple or quadruple your productivity in a matter of hours and get leaps and bounds ahead of your goals, expectations and colleagues with amazing results and accomplish your tasks in fractions of the time! It’s creators like this that make programs like this out of shear desperation and necessity that are absolutely required by so many that just need that one tiny bit of encouragement that really just doesn’t exist until it’s created like this so that they/we can become successful and surpass even our own wishes, ambitions and dreams which we thought impossible! Thank you for all your pain and suffering! All your hard work and misery! All your ambition and frustration! All your aggravation and accomplishments! All of your failures and triumphs! All your pain and dedication! You are: “ONE IN A MILLION”! This will help so many that have hidden in the dark on the sidelines for so long for fear of discovery! They will now come running out of the shadows to enlighten the world with their light and knowledge to show everyone their strength, ability and capabilities because of you and because of this! Thank you!.Mile HughesVersion: 2.18.4
Studying Efficiency DoubledFor a long time I’ve been actively looking for a better way to study. Among my strategies is a time consuming, “actually reading aloud” important notes and sometimes whole passages into a handheld voice recorder. Many times, I have to review and replay small sections. I either have to record in small bits to select small sections or rewind and scan through large whole passages guess-timating more or less what I want to review. It can become a tedious process and makes for inefficient study but with this app I simply select the section I want to replay by touching the screen, along with the playback speed and tone and accent of voice choice. At $12 a month and as an active duty military member, a part time student, and a law abiding citizen trying to keep up with world news the premium for the app was contemplated for all of 20 seconds. I didn’t want to do it but I’ve made way worst financial decisions in the past. WHY NOT! If you don’t get the app you will be making a tiny mistake in your life. Also I must mention that there are free aloud readers out there but everything needs an active internet connection. Having the freedom to carry my smartphone and headphones around without being attached to a laptop is worth its weight in gold..GmanGeniusVersion: 2.18.1
I’ve never been diagnosedBut with all I’ve been through my whole entire life I know it’s true I have always admired people who love to read and wish that would happen to me because those people always seem to be so much smarter then me & I know I’m not dumb, I just can’t convince myself or others of that. I’m old now and in my day you are just not called the nicest names by your peers & your family. When it comes to retaining things and remembering things I just can’t do it. My parents always told me I had selective hearing and only remembered what I wanted to hear. Then explain this to me at the age of 10 my parents told me to be home by a certain time because the family was going to Disneyland, I was over at my friends house and never made it home on time I guess @ 4 or 5 they came over to my friends house to rub it in that they had just got back from Disneyland and I just missed out. My Grandparents and my little brother told me so I was devastated tell me what kid would rather play at their friends house which they did almost on a daily basis rather then go to Disneyland? One thing I felt was very strange though was they came home and it was not even evening yet usually when you go to an amusement park of that magnitude and price you would think you’d get your moneys worth and stay later in the night, We lived in West Covina, which was about an hour and a half to and from. Years later when I asked my brother again if they had gone to Disneyland or not he couldn’t remember I felt all along it wasn’t true but I couldn’t believe my grandparents would go along with a lie just to teach me a lesson, to this day I have no idea what the lesson was.

LIFE CHANGINGOkay I know that title is super hyperbolic, but as a filmmaker and YouTuber this app has truly made my workflow much more seamless and fun. First off I never was a good reader growing up and even as an adult. I have to read to scripts for my work and honestly I have a hard time focusing on each script, but with Speechify it helps me stay focused on the script and allows my eyes and fingers to follow along the scripts. It really feels like a table read to me and give me the mental capacity to follow along and get into the script. Now as a YouTuber Speechify has allowed me to no longer have to rely on recording my own audio and having to study lines and fumble of the sometimes lengthy scripts for my videos. And how Speechify does this is I have recorded my personal voice with the AI feature and honestly the AI voice even fools me at times listening to it read the scripts I write out. I don’t ever have to fumble over lines or feel the pressure of recording myself in front of the camera and deliver a perfect performance, but now I focus more on the edit and the creation of my videos and leave the talking parts to AI. If any of this sounds like it could help you, then I would urge you to spend the money and make your life much more productive and entertaining..MattybeavsVersion: 3.2.4
This has helped me SO much!As a dyslexic college student, drowning in the required readings and endless emails thrust upon pupils I have found myself trying anything and everything to increase my comprehension and reading speed. I simply don’t have time to reread a medical review 500 times as my brain unyieldingly demands! This app has been a savior to my grades, comprehension, confidence, and has boosted my craving for reading and knowledge! I would recommend this to anyone and everyone! Also, you can put books, yes real actual books you read for entertainment, into the app and create your own audiobooks! This app hasn’t only helped me in my college life, it has gotten me back to reading again! Love it!!
The only negative thing I would say about this app is the premium version is EXPENSIVE. I tried it out to get a voice more personable and engaging but I found the cost more than I could justify. I love the premium voices (especially Harry!!) but as a broke college kid I just can’t afford it. Would you maybe consider making a free voice that is a little less monotonous? Maybe y’all could make Harry free? Yes, the latter request is a bit far reaching but it was worth a shot😅. Anyway - love the app and would recommend time and time again!!.P.GracieVersion: 2.18.4
My #1 App with a big requestSpeechify is undoubtedly the best AI reading app available. Well worth the price and it continues to improve with greater and greater accuracy. The skip features have greatly improved and this app has helped me to both meet and exceed my reading goals. That being said, there is one feature that I hope will be available at some point. I use speechify to read many pdf documents. I have many books in pdf format that I annotate and highlight quite a bit in speechify. The nature of these notes and highlights are for research purposes. It would be amazing if I was able to export my pdf documents with my highlights and notes. Regarding the notes (annotations), a simple way I see this being done is by appending pages to the document with the annotations having a reference number + page number they appear on. Another option is doing a quote reply format where the quoted section the annotation was added to was placed with the annotation in the appended pages (including the page number as well). How ever this works, it would turn what is mostly a reading app into a fuller research and study tool. Please consider this Speechify team. You’re doing great and keep up the good work..LvstrossVersion: 5.0.17
I’m loving it!I always read really slow compared to others and I always tend to read better with someone/something reading it out loud. On this app though I can just easily take a picture of my book pages and it loads within a minute which is really fast and amazing and I just listen to it. It does mess up on some of the words which is understandable that’s why I’m glad I can just edit the text from what ever it messes up. I love how you can just add folders because I’m separating my book by chapters because that’s easier and to make it a whole lot easier I just add it in a folder with the book title as the folder name. It’s easy to add series also because I can add folders within a folder and I find that absolutely amazing. I’m glad I found this app so I can actually read better and read more of what I love! I already been suggesting this app to a lot of people and I only got it yesterday. I love this app already! I’ve been listening to my book all day while doing some work without buying things like some ebook apps even though they're some things you can buy like translation and voices which I might actually buy soon!
❤️❤️❤️Thank you so much! You’re such a life saver! I’m glad this app exists!❤️❤️❤️.Mika MaiyazuVersion: 2.3.3
Not there yetI actually use this quite a bit and would love it to work better. I’m paying for the premium and you should expect to as well because the free version hits you with a lot of ads and they interrupt the reading in a bad way. The other perk to the paid version is the nice voices. That steps up your experience in a big way and sets it apart from just highlighting text and having your phone read it. Problem is, the better voices only work some of the time and that seems to glitch everything up. For example, if I’m not in my house or office using Wi-Fi, I always have to switch it back to the robot voice or it will have too much trouble loading. I’ve only ever used this app to read websites or blog entries and really can’t see myself taking pictures of books ever but guess that could be useful for someone with a reading problem. I typically been using this app to dictate articles while I am multitasking but wish it would expand into my work day a bit better and I could use it to easily read emails to me without having to leave my inbox. The native iPhone dictation does this all right but I was hoping that this app would replace that. I still use the native iPhone dictation most of the time because it integrates into my workflow much better. I use the native iPhone dictation features to proofread my own emails before sending them and also to speak out things (such as this review right now) instead of typing everything. I really wish that was something this app could do as well -at least the reading emails/proofreading parts. I don’t know how long I will continue to pay for it if those upgrades don’t happen and I can’t integrate it into me texts/emails. For now I’ll keep paying in hopes that this will be heard..HomerHorowitzVersion: 2.17.2
Deleted filesUpdate: adding back some stars because customer service eventually got my files restored.
I never write reviews, but I’m making an exception because of the absolutely awful experience I have had. When I signed up for a premium subscription I had unlimited access to AI voices and I used the app heavily for months. At some point, Speechify introduced a word limit on AI voices without notifying Premium customers. I was not happy about this but I still didn’t think it warranted a negative review. What got me here was the fact that I messaged customer service about an issue I was having with the app freezing while reading epub files. A chatbot responded telling me to uninstall and reinstall the app. I did this then signed back in and restored my Premium subscription. Bafflingly, doing this resulted in all of my files being deleted and my listening history being reset to 0 minutes and 0 words. I had listened to over 5.4M words and was in the middle of a long document. Contacting customer service resulted in another message from a chatbot telling me my history should be backed up with iCloud and the restore would happen automatically. Well I’m backing up the app with iCloud and my history isn’t restored. I also wasn’t warned that doing this could result in all of my files being deleted. $160 headache..DRBouquinVersion: 3.2.4
Convenient when it worksIt’s a convenient way to listen to epub and pdf files…when it works. It tends to get stuck(pause) and not read any longer after a certain amount of time or (this is just a guess) if the file is too large. Though with the most recent update this has somewhat decreased. I had to adjust the voice I use because of the premium word limit. Which is pretty much garbage considering how much a yearly subscription is. That should be unlimited.
**One of the most recent updates makes it so you can’t change the font on epubs. Not a huge problem but annoying. Something that I’m not a fan of AT ALL is I can’t drag my finger across the time bar to change where I’m at, I can only use the chapter index and scroll. This most recent update is my least favorite so far. The pausing is happening more often and the app will just stop playing and restart. Then when you open it sometimes it just keeps loading but won’t play. The continue listening section is only showing up sometimes. Epubs are having issues following the text; it’ll show what it’s reading in a tiny bubble but won’t bring the document visual down so you can see it in real time. I’ll update the review dependent on future updates..KatiesamiamVersion: 4.3.26
Why I chose not to subscribe after 3 day trial.I really wanted to like Speechify. When it works, its very nice to have for reading articles while I am commuting. It is also helpful for for learning a foreign language. I am trying to teach myself French and having Paris Match read to me in French is great.
The problem is when it doesn’t work properly translate its very frustrating. I spent some time during the 3 day trial to see if was worth the $139 cost. For that price, it does need to work consistently which it didn’t - at least for me. Using the web extensions on Safari in general worked both on free and via paywalls once permission was granted. I also tried using it on PDF but not the desktop. I really like the Premium voices and believe they make a difference when they work. The problem is that for the few that I used in English the spoken words went from clear pronunciation to gibberish that I could not understand. Wait a few sentences and then it would frequently become understandable again only shift back to something I couldn’t listen to. I found this to be the case for both the latest iPhone Pro and iPad Air. Waiting for the speech translation to become available made no difference over time. Also not making sense is the wide range of subscription options offered via the App Store. There are a wide range of premium pricing models (per year) when the only one that appears to be valid is $ 139 per year model - assume you subscribe for the year.
To team Speechify, if you fix your problems and give me a short new try to confirm I will consider purchasing however the bugs need to be addressed otherwise the pricing is too expensive for what you get..Dbear678Version: 2.19.0
Works, but needs editing to work well!I often listen along while reading to provide multi sensory input to improve my reading comprehension and memory, but the long time while editing can be counterproductive at times. Most of the documents I need to read, such as academic papers and textbooks, have multiple columns, text boxes, charts, etc. per page. For this to work correctly on Speechify, I find I must go through each page to edit the columns and mark each text area. This isn’t too bad, but the editing feature can be finicky and hard to line up if you don’t have neat columns for the entire page. There is only one “template” for up to 4 columns, but this doesn’t always align well with whats on the page. Columns and text boxes are doable, but charts not so much yet (but those are usually for visual studying, anyway). Additionally, it will miss spaces frequently and so bunches several words together, causing speechify to spell out the block of text letter by letter instead of interpreting the words. For this reason I often have to edit the text while reading/listening, too, to add the spaces or correct the punctuation. I find this app helpful for my needs (I have ADHD and autism and am in grad school with tons of heavy duty reading), but it requires a bit too much extra work for the high cost of the app!.MadelinehaffVersion: 2.16.1
This Is A Total Game Changer!!!🙏🙏🙏This is really good, like really really good. I’ll be able to get through a text book a week if not a day! With this app. It’s just so breath taking. When I watched the creators YouTube videos about the app it seemed too good to be true and I thought it was a scam, but low and behold it’s a freaking gold mine! A major arbitrage opportunity! This has just become my new secret weapon, straight A’s here I come..Mord107Version: 1.9.30
SpeechifyI’m dyslexic and this is help me very much throughout school and just in general it is not only help me and improved my reading but I also recommended it to my family members and that is very well speak if I had also taught me words I didn’t know that honestly existed so thank you speechify for helping me😊.QzptmVersion: 2.4.8
Not good not badThis app is on such a roll with where it’s going, but it needs a lot of work. I thought I was all set with my chrome extension but the app just seems to really lag and struggle too many times. One thing that is a major issue is that with online school there are a lot of powerpoints with information. If you open the PowerPoint online, it will not read it. Highlighting the text also does not work. This will likely be the reason I do not stick with this application as it can’t truly read everything on a web page. I have put way too much effort into trying to get it to work when it’s supposed to help save time and be efficient. I look forward to where this technology goes but for now it’s just not really that helpful..ScottieJ17Version: 2.16.3
Unreal, best experience so farThis Text-to-Speech software is worth your time. Try it free, on different platforms.
I am currently using the "Narrator" (beta) voice and starting at 160 WPM speed for better retention. My school notes now have the same vibe as a BBC documentary and it's a vibe.
The price for premium is steep for one year but honestly time is money and the amount of time you'll save once you train yourself to use this program efficiently outways the price.
I am currently restructuring my school notes formatting so that it can be read smoothly with this app. I think that I have it figured out and the time learning to work with this program already seems worth it.
Check it out..Brayden ChuraVersion: 2.16.0
Latest update is awfulSo the latest update (im writing this in late November ‘24) is terrible. Speechify now inexplicably skips words and mispronounces numbers constantly. It will occasionally skip entire sections of text for no discernible reason. This occurs even when going into text editing mode and ensuring there are no formatting errors. I like speechify, its highly useful to me as a student. However, I have to say that the service is ripe for competition. If anyone from speechify ever sees this, if you want to stay relevant, focus less on fancy Ai bells and whistles and more on ironing out your core functionality issues..AarionVersion: 4.0.3

Speechify – Text to Speech PDF Negative Reviews
Audio Book ListeningI want to start off saying I’ve only used this app to listen to two audio books, I have not used the other features and from what I hear it sounds like the other features work fine. But, I don’t think I can muscle through using this app for another audio book ever again, and to be fair I’m probably not the target audience of the app in the first place. -Frequent app crashes. Frequent. -When pausing an audio book and opening the app later, the app regularly jumps to another paragraph in the chapter or ahead a couple of chapters. Sometimes I’d pause it for fun and hit play right after to see how many words or sentences it decided to skip. -I found that if my iphone is in low power mode, the audio will completely stop playing after a couple minutes and I have go back into the app to hit the play button, which then almost always jumps the audio reading to another section (see issue before). -Tapping the forward or reverse buttons, in other audio book apps (I know this isn’t an “audio book app”) this allows the listener to jump ahead or behind a few seconds, not this app. Sometimes it feels like jumping to a paragraph behind or ahead. Maybe it takes you to the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes it will just jump an entire chapter of the book. Once it restarted the book entirely; that filled me with an emotion I thought I had experienced before but after this experience I realized I had never truly tapped into the full potential of this emotion..ElkeivoVersion: 2.26.3
Promising app but disastrous updates hinder performanceThis is a really promising application but unfortunately the last several updates have damaged the functionality. Early versions of the app stored files on your phone and downloading them was lighting fast and when you opened your app later to finish reading your downloaded files they were instantly there for you to read. A few updates ago the application was changed so that files you download now sync with servers in an attempt to allow you to view your files across the Chrome app (this is what the devs explained to me when I pointed out the new updates’ problem), however this syncing requirement means when you open the app it takes absolutely ages for your files to load, sometimes over an hour. I have not cancelled my premium subscription yet because I know this app can function better, because it used to prior to the damaging updates. I communicated these concerns to the developers and I’m patiently awaiting the next update to see if this issue is addressed. But since these new updates I’ve had a really hard time using the app and I’ve been searching for a replacement that doesn’t have these issues.
UPDATE: I have cancelled my subscription as the app experience continues to get worse. My saved files now mostly won’t sync and are thus not accessible usually for about 15 minutes after the app loads. This server sync delay is unacceptable in a subscription product.FoolishkdjdjdjVersion: 2.17.3
Word limits!!I originally was planning to give a 5 star review. I had previously been using a horrible text to voice app that sounds like the free voice in this app, but I listen to some lengthy texts when driving, working, cleaning ect. I had adored this app. Once you find the voice that best suits you (the premium voices) it would read it very naturally other then the few miss pronunciation which you can easily catch.
Here were my issues with this app though. It doesn’t charge you monthly. I initially wanted to test the app out since I had a previous one that I was still using, I DID like this app but I was horrified to see how much I was charged in one sitting after going past my trial period and had paid around $120 for a whole year. I would’ve preferred to pay month to month but what can you do…
Additionally, I had recently increased my volume of reading drastically to then find there is a word limit!! I am floored. In the middle of my listening it had cut to the worst robotic voice which was one of six “free” voices. To think I paid so much for a text to speech app just to get throttled.
Once I had contacted customer service their response was to give me 50k more words (mind you that had only lasted me under 2 hours of listening) and they also said they are in the works to create a premium with the option of more words/ unlimited words. So I’m gonna have to pay even MORE?? I’m not sure if it’s just me but I find this absolutely crazy.Izabella1315Version: 3.2.6
Canceled subscription, still was chargedI have literally never let a review but this was a huge bummer. I did a free trial but didn’t think the subscription price was worth it personally to continue, so the night before it expired I canceled through settings->subscriptions on my iPhone (which has always worked in the past) I woke up to a charge for $140 on a card that I had not placed funds into for a charge that big. It over drafted that account and while they did provide a refund, it takes days to process and that money is a necessity for me. As a person who puts a lot of reminders in my calendar to stay on top of canceling subscriptions that I do not want to continue with, it was super disappointing. I also brought up to customer service how I’ll be paying fees for the over draft and also the issues the refund processing time causes but it was glossed over, they just sent a screenshot of the refund confirmation again and said they hope I get it soon. 🥲 Then I asked if they are resolving the issue, and they replied telling me that I probably re-subscribed on their website and entered my card details after canceling. I 110% did not and I have never been to their website (except to unsubscribe from their email list) Hopefully this issue gets fixed, it was a major surprise and it’s going to be frustrating to not have that money the next few days. Yes, I could contact my bank, but I also work all day every day so it’s hard to find time 😅 UPDATE…closed out of customer support chat for a moment and now the CTA to open it back up is non functional.Swess00Version: 2.26.9
Trial is a SCAM (update)If you want to try premium for the trial period make sure you SET YOUR OWN REMINDER before their trial ends. Speechify has an option to “notify me before trial ends”, and this notification never came. I have had notifications on and for Speechify as well. No such notification came. I didn’t like Speechify at all. It has a limited scope of voices. It says it doesn’t keep “political figures” yet has Obama and ONLY Obama as a “president” voice option. The other voices are totally uninteresting. It’s overall not something I care for.
The worst part is that neither Apple nor Speechify will refund me after I asked for the cancellation of my premium account after they failed to notify me. So because I was not given the chance to cancel my subscription before end of trial via a notification I am out $140 for a product that I find uninteresting and that I do not want to use. This is such slimy behavior on behalf of both Apple and Speechify bordering on fraudulent. It’s disgusting.
UPDATE: After reaching out in response to my review, Speechify did make a good faith effort to compromise and correct the problem addressed in this review. I was refunded for 70% of what I paid, and while this is far from the perfect outcome I am pleased that their follow-up to what they did wrong to me was addressed. As such, I have upgraded my review from one (probably undeserved as it should have been ZERO) star to a whopping TWO STARS for their TRYING to do the right thing..QualityDPVersion: 4.3.15
Good app and good idea but not worth the moneyUpdate: customer service is not good, I sent 6 messages over the span of a couple hours and it’s now been 7 hours and I still haven’t gotten a reply about my questions. Definitely gonna end my free trial so I don’t get charged and absurd amount of money. This app feels like it’s taking advantage of people with disabilities and people who need it for school. Old review: I honestly really like this app and it helps me a lot with focusing and reading my boring textbooks for school but I planned on only having the app for a couple months not for a year. So the fact that I have to pay $140 for a whole year when I’m only really going to use it for three months is kind of ridiculous and a waste of my money. I wish there was a monthly plan option or a plan for students because most of the people using this app are probably using it for school anyways. on the App Store it said I could change to a monthly plan for $30 a month which is still very expensive but it’s better than 140 for a whole year that will go to waste. I tried asking through the app if changing my subscription on the App Store changes it from a yearly subscription to a monthly subscription so I only have to pay 30 a month, but instead they offered a discount for the yearly plan and didn’t really answer my question. The communication on the app takes too long and by the time they reply my free trial is probably going to be over. This app is very helpful but it’s way too expensive and there should be more options for subscriptions such as a monthly subscription..TrormondeVersion: 2.21.7
Slow and SpottyI was super excited about the app at first until I started using it. I had to read a book for a class that I am taking so I did as instructed and took pictures of all the pages of the book which took a while. Not too too long it was a somewhat short book though if I had to read a longer book I couldn’t imagine sitting there taking pictures for an hour just so I can have some computer read to me. Don’t get me wrong this is a great concept but it is SUPER glitchy half the time I was taking pictures they would come out blurry and the computer wouldn’t be able to read them. On top of that I spent like 15 minutes just waiting for the stupid thing to say the first word. There were pictures in the book and when the computer came across the pictures it’s like it couldn’t register what to do. I had to manually skip past them. They want 140 dollars a year for this crappy app or 12 dollars a month. I most certainly am not going to pay for something that doesn’t work. I am extremely upset about this app. Wasted my time when I could have just read the book for myself it was a bigger headache and hassle than what it’s worth. Maybe I was doing something wrong and it’s not the apps fault but if that’s the case it’s not simple enough for a stupid person to use. I mostly think it just has bugs they need to fix because this thing is taking forever just to load one page of reading. Maybe it will get better. I honestly wish it was cheaper too though. I guess it’s the average price for a monthly subscription… not worth it if it doesn’t work though..ChevbosbrvVersion: 2.29.0
Misleading advertisement and glitchesCant tell if its mostly terrible marketing or horrid customer service or what but the 450,000 word limit was never disclosed in the marketing then when you mention that you can’t access to premium voices (b/c you didnt know about the limit), they mention the 450k limit as if you’re an idiot for not memorizing the entirety of the terms of service. Just put a figgin word counter on the dashboard that tells people how many words they have left, and explicitly say it in your marketing (website, videos, training, free trial, ads, etc.) BEFORE people spend well over $100 for the app. Plus it’s going to crash every couple minutes anyway so what’s the point? The app gets worse with each update which you’d have no way of knowing because all the update descriptions just say they added Gwynth Paltrow and Snoop Dogg. We already know! That was in your marketing a year ago!! Who ever is in charge of marketing, customer service, and project management needs some additional formal training. I have defended this app for a while now but every day the reviews get worse and the developer responses are increasingly passive agressive and patronizing. Please stop apologizing to people because THEY allegedly did something wrong, take some accountability, and fix the problems before adding new features. It’s getting old and bordering on predatory marketing at this point..A.D.HewittVersion: 3.2.1
I used to love this app!! Then was charged $160I was Speechify’s #1 fan!! But lately, the app has been glitching, and when I deleted & redownloaded it, I was charged $160 without warning. When I reached out to Speechify via email, they said I had to reach out to Apple. When I reached out to Apple, they said I was ineligible for a refund, potentially because Speechify had already received the funds. It looks like this has happened to other people too, and it’s a huge bummer because this app has so much potential & has been really helpful for me in the past. See below for my old ~glowing review~.

Old Review: I’m in grad school & this app has made working through readings not just easier & faster, but has also allowed me to retain more information & understand my readings better. I usually play the readings on my phone using Speechify & then read along, which makes me feel like I have someone sitting there, reading my homework to me (which I guess, in a way, I do). As a Black person, I appreciate that Speechify has begun to include a diversity of voices to choose from (currently listening to Mr. President but fingers crossed for more) and as someone who has to read a lot of longer texts, I’m psyched about the new option to upload Kindle books. Thank you, Speechify! This app has been a game changer for me. ***
Hopefully they get back on track! That was a whopper on my bank account though, so they might have me as a fan again, but maybe they’ll have you?.AytharpeVersion: 2.27.8
Waste of Money - full of issues! Don’t fall for it.My woes started for the second I downloaded this up. Frist, I signed up for the trial and was immediately charged the full years subscription price. Great. So I surmised “I guess I have to use it now.” Boy was a wrong. I have been “using it” if you can call it that. This app never works properly. It cuts off intermittently for no reason. I turned off all power saving settings, set my screen the NEVER lock and am on 1GB fiber WiFi. Optimal setting, right? Think again. I’m plagued with constant pauses and random full stops. But wait there’s more! I use this app to read my textbooks to me, which I purchased through the Kindle app. Yea it does support kindle, but with limited features. There are no options to skip in text citations, tables or graphs. This thing reads ever word on the page including the page number, which is in a line of text. Being as my texts are medical and written in APA with full in text citations, you can see how this is an issue. The words “et all” have been spoken more than “the” or “a”. Further, the cadence of voices is very odd. Random pauses to take a very fake breath, continuances that run right over periods, and sometimes just plain strange pronunciations. It’s makes listening a chore! I’m honestly shocked this app costs $130 for something that functions so poorly. Do yourself a favor and use the built in reader in your phone. It actually functions round equal to this rip off..ForeverDecemberVersion: 3.3.2
Safe, non-confrontational selections. Very vanilla book selectionsI have two very long books that I have started that I was hoping to be able to finish with this app. I drive out of town frequently and was going to use that time on the road more productively, but this app didn’t recognize or have access to either of my books. One of these books was written by a New York Times best selling Author Annie Jacobsen. The book title was titled “Operation Paperclip”.
The second book title was “To the Victor go the myths and Monuments”. By Arther Thompson.
Due to how narrow of selections that seem to be available, I will be cancelling my subscription before the trial period ends.
In an age where freedom of speech is under attack, and tools of social engineering, shadow banning, historical facts are edited like life is a fictional play that you can just change any time your personal security or point of view is proven invalid or becomes threatened, I was hoping that this would be a useful tool for me to finish these very important books written by historical investigative journalists pointing out a great divergence between public school text book history, and documented Library of Congress recorded historical facts.
This app appears to be just another safe, non-controversial, vanilla, and controlled 1984’esque platform, that furthers the nanny state by removing anything that would threaten the image of government, its officials, and some of the filthy and criminal actions they have perpetrated on the world..Rick's I-PhoneVersion: 5.0.24
Speechify customer rep may need his own product more than me!Tried to access a 3 day trial, instead they pulled $175 from my account on a Thursday evening, told me they couldn’t initiate a refund and I had to go through Apple. Left me with $18 (still haven’t gotten a refund), my bank deactivated my card because I filed the claim as fraud. Missed several monthly payments and so now my credit will be impacted, and “Ricky” decides after 3 days to tell me that I somehow had a trial over 2 years ago and that’s why I got charged….??? The offer even has a slider button that says NOTIFY me before I am charged. That was selected and it still didn’t happen. What I remember is that 2 years ago they were using G. Paltrow’s voice and that it sounded choppy and uncomfortable. I don’t remember any free trial, just listening to a sample. I could be wrong and would have declined a subscription at the above price and looked at other options. The point is that there were no options offered. There still aren’t and they are still contacting me after I requested that they NOT. To make it worse, they aren’t contacting me to make amends for what happened, they are continuing to tell me why this is somehow my fault…..Potentially amazing product with absolutely no concept of customer relations much less customer service. Someone should tell Snoop as that is their new hook. Major disconnect, really negative experience and no feeling of concern from them. Thanks “Ricky”……🤦🏻♀️.Frogee1Version: 2.27.2
Not worth 1 star to meI canceled my free 3 day trial and the 2nd day. I went in the app to do so and it directed me to the website to proceed to cancel my subscription and because this happened to me 4 days ago with a different app and they refunded me because they did unrightfully charged me the year subscription.
Unfortunately speechify did the same to me today and withdrew $160 as form of subscription yearly payment even after I honored the terms and conditions agreement that they would not charge me if I cancelled within the 3 days of the free trial. Witch I did and yet they couldn’t follow there own terms and conditions verification. Unprofessional and not even doing what they can to correct the problem other then saying sorry but apple support will need to assist me and sends me a link that’s I had completed before I reached out to them to inform them of what they wrongly did to me. I even did a survey following me canceling and confirming my cancellation of the free three day trial before trial is up answering the question they asked about why I was canceling and didn’t want to pay for the subscription charge after my free trial was up and I said it’s not reasonable or worth $160 for a year because the AI’s wouldn’t say the right words that where in the literature and books i chose them to read for me as well as couldn’t pernounce 40% of the words it was reading to even slurring words together. Poor quality performance in so many ways!.NessaM333Version: 2.27.2
#1 fan to pitchfork-wielding villager - Kindle integration is garbageThis service used to be great AND it used to come with a shorter and less expensive subscription package. I hadn’t used it for a while and when I came back I was excited about new features and did the free trial - and then forgot to cancel $150 later. Oh well - I loved it and thought the developers deserved it. This thing has turned into such a useless pile of garbage- constantly resetting itself, turning off constantly - the only thing I really could see myself using it for is the Kindle integration. It constantly stops and loses its place. If you try to download a book —WHEN it lets you—, chunks will wind up out of order (it took me 2 books to realize this was the issue and not some perverse trickery by the author). I’ve just spent 30+ minutes and three attempts, clicking to keep my phone from going to sleep on the download screen - only to find myself furious enough to come leave a review. Something like six years ago, I went out of my way to contact the developer just to express my gratitude for the product - and now I’m sharpening my pitchfork tines and would warn you off if looking particularly for kindle audio. If anyone bothers to read this and is in the same boat - I suggest using the Alexa app as a passable alternative. It’ll read to you in the Alexa voice, which is absolutely not nearly as nice as this could be - but at least it works..CiarraianneVersion: 5.0.4
Putting a cap on premium voices did me in.I admit that I was blown away when I first heard some of the voices Speechify had. I have been using Voice Dream since 2019 and with their move to a subscription-based price scale, wanted to see what other options I had. The voices from Speechify sound so much better than VD’s! I almost had a heart attack when I saw the yearly price. $160 for premium PER YEAR. I would have strongly considered it if it had been a one-time fee. I was strongly considering it anyway until the last day of my admittedly short trial when the audio I was listening to repeatedly kept stopping. And then I read the reviews about a monthly cap on words read by premium or HD voices. I reached out to Speechify to confirm and yes, the premium voices are capped at 150K words per month, but you can listen to their “other” voices all you want. I can listen to “other” voices for free on VD. To put it into perspective, I listened to 3 novella length books during my trial, at a total word rate of 92K. At this rate, I could listen to about 5 novellas before I’m capped out. So…4 days. 4 days of premium voices for $160 a year, in addition to audio that cuts out. Yes, it’s much easier to import books directly via the Kindle app (which also allows me to listen to KU titles) but that’s pretty much the only added functionality Speechify has. If they got rid of the word cap, I would probably subscribe. As it currently is, it’s a big nope..Wollen_KittenVersion: 3.0.6
It’s not worth this kind of moneyI truly wonder if they are charging this much for this app strictly because they think students will spend their loan money on something like this, only to have it be crappy and not be able to get their money back. I’m on day 2 of the free trial and I found that I need to sit in front of my computer and follow along with the reading because if I get up and move away from the screen whatever the app is supposed to be reading will continue on another page and the speech doesn’t continue, it goes to whatever pictures or boxes are on my textbook page that it was reading and starts reading those in basically gibberish because it tries reading the actual pictures: maps and what not. I was sitting here, waiting for the desktop app to open my history book and I got up and went to the door to look outside and the narration started. But when I got closer to the sound, I heard that it was literally just gibberish so I took a video to send to the developers. I couldn’t see where the narrator was supposedly narrating from and couldn’t find it but I heard it saying letters over and over and over again and like erroring out. This is probably happening 50% of the time I try using this program. Considering they want $140 for this, I’m canceling my free trial early in case it charges me before I expect to be charged. Good luck..Firecat72Version: 2.18.5
Audio books and premium subscriptionAlthough this is a great app for some people, it has MANY downfalls. At first I REALLY LOVED this app and i thought it was super cool that all you had to do was scan a book then a voice would read it to you FOR FREE. The first like 4 days into listening with the audio book were fine all i had to do was scan the book and have the voice read it to me. But then the next day I scaned the book and it wouldn’t let me hear it unless i got premium. I just dont understand why you can have an app for listening to audio book then want to charge hundreds of dollars for it. I did know that there were premium things like changing the speed and voices (which I think is stupid) and also other things. However I never bothered to get premium because I still got to listen to my books. But now I cant even scan a page without it asking me to get premium. How are you gonna tell me that I cant use an audio book app to scan and listen to the book. All I am trying to say is that I HATE the fact that you can’t even listen to your desired book in an AUDIO BOOK APP without having to pay hundreds of dollars for it. If you are reading this do not download the app thinking that its all free (which is what I did) because at the end of the day they will always ask you for money and you wont even get to listen to your book. So if you have hundreds of dollars just lying around, be my guest download the app and immediately if you click a “coo feature” like changing the listening speed it will ask you to buy premium. This app is ridiculous, overpriced, and stupid..Cb peteVersion: 3.2.5
Flashy ads, crappy product. Pretty big rip off.UPDATE: March 2022– I can’t emphasize enough — don’t waste your money on this app. They still haven’t figured out basic things like “Mr.” or “Dr.” is not the end of a sentence. They need to spend less money on ads and actually bring their product up to speed with basic technology. It’s better than nothing— but not by much!
ORIGINAL REVIEW
This app seems like it was rushed to launch with the technology and features not ready for prime time. I want to like this so much. And if you’re driving and need to hear an article, it’s better than nothing. But the best voices sound extremely computer generated. And the better sounding voices (there’s one that sounds a lot like David Attenborough) just don’t work well. Pauses where there shouldn’t be pauses. Mispronunciation of extremely common words. (It calls Fauci “fau-sy…like how do you not update your software to recognize insanely common proper names?) And again, I cannot overstate how impossible it is to comprehend an article when the AI reader puts random pauses in places where there are no grammatical pauses. If you need something to read you an article in a punchcard fine. But it’s not worth the money just yet. They need to work out the technology before justifying this kind of price. Maybe use some of the money you’re paying for slick advertisements and use it to develop this product more. Because right now, you’re overselling it..GallokcVersion: 2.19.3
The fact that I gotta pay for this app that don’t workLet me start by saying I use this app to help me get through my text. Looks for school because I have ADHD and it’s hard for me to retain information as I’m reading so I work better when something is being read to me I pay for this app this app skips whole synthesis whole paragraph it does not stay on course. And that is when it actually loads. This app cannot differentiate between photos on a paper and text. It will not read a list of vocabulary words that’s in a form. It would just read the right side of the column, which is all of the vocabulary words and then it’ll go to the left side and read all of the definitions and it jumps it up. You cannot scan in a paper that has text and a picture on it. I’m using this app basically for my A&P courses in my medical term course. These textbooks come with a lot of illustration S and words this is not an app for a textbook with any type of illustration. This is not a app meant for it to actually read something to you. That is lengthy because it will skip words and skip whole paragraphs. I am completely disappointed and discouraged from finding apps that actually work and what makes this so bad is out of all of their apps that do read to you. This is the best one and this one is no good. How ironic is that? If anyone knows of an app that does not have these issues please let me know. I am desperate need..Kierra42Version: 4.3.26
Taking advantage of people with disabilitiesThe idea is great and could really help someone like me with dyslexia. However, the lack of open dyslexic font, the app crashing, and the highlighted words not at all staying with the voice, it’s just sort of a unhelpful app based in a great idea. I’m a good reader for the most part and I read offer, I just wanted something that could help me work on my speed or at least decrease my fatigue. Unfortunately this app is just not there. The price is another thing which feels like it’s trying to take advantage of those with a reading disability. Like I get they need to make money, but I feel that the price is insulting. The founder apparently has dyslexia and instead of helping us he is trying to profit from us. As a teacher, I really wanted a great way to help my students with improving their reading, but I could not with good conscious suggest an app that will charge them $140 every year! There are far too many people who price gouge people with disabilities and it’s the same for people with learning disabilities. It’s awful and it makes me sad that this is considered acceptable. The makers of this app should be ashamed for taking advantage of people who are just trying to find a way to make life easier for themselves and others. Subscriptions are not a ethical way to charge customers, and they know it. It’s just about money to them and people with a disability are easy targets..JillyT13Version: 2.20.1
Basic user now frustrated by basic becoming unusableI started using this app to help with reading fanfiction and my own works two years ago, since I’m having more difficulty with reading as I get older, and it was amazing. They had plenty of free voices to choose from that you could freely use, and the other more realistic voices were cooler, but had to use premium, but I was okay with that because of the good selection of said free voices and you could import ANYTHING as a free feature. But now apparently that’s taken away and now only is used for premium users. I was going to import another thing to listen to for what I could do with my content and I find out I can’t freely import ANYTHING anymore unless I had premium. Which I don’t have money for, and that’s completely unfair. It seems as time passes, the good selection of free voices are also disappearing near to none on mobile, and we’re getting *ads* for premium now while in the middle of listening to the content already on my account. I’m using the app less and less because of all this now, and soon I might drop it all together if this keeps up. I loved it when I initially installed it two years ago, but now it’s becoming nothing but a cash grab and I’m sorely disappointed. I’m even more disappointed that I can’t find any alternatives to this. If anyone can find one, I’ll certainly take it over this unless the devs stop taking the free features away from what made the app so good in the first place. All I got left to say is: I hope I’m not alone in this and hopefully I won’t say goodbye to it eventually, because I really don’t. But if I have to, I may need to..EdouBunnyVersion: 2.25.7
Seriously?I am a student in high school trying to cram study the night before my unit exam for my medical class. I downloaded this app to help me because I have a hard time reading documents on my phone, so I needed it to be read to me. I gave this app two stars because during my “seven day free trial” the readers voice I selected and the speed at which it read was all very nice, until it told me the voice I had selected (after two minutes of reading) is now a premium voice and I have to switch to a more AI sounding voice. Which then I thought okay, kind of annoying since I did think I would have this available for seven days but whatever. So, I again go back to listening and then the highlighted words that was supposed to tell me where the reader was at kept bugging out and wasn’t correctly following the words. After all of this I was six minutes into my nine minute long document and it then told me that my words had maxed out, and I will have to buy the premium version in order to keep reading. At this point now, I’m very frustrated since I was just looking for an app to read to me and help with my assignments (like it said it was going to at the start of my “seven day free trial”). I will definitely be going back to coping and pasting my texts into google translate and listening that way. No hate, just really disappointed. :(.-adriannAVersion: 2.23.0
Be Warned!I loved this app!!! It helped get through so many books. And then all of a sudden the Premium voices that I paid for are gone! Why? Because they cap you at 150,000 words a month!!!!! Had I known that I would not have wasted my money! I thought this app was stupid expensive to begin with but was so happy with the speed I was getting through books. I feel ripped off and probably will not be resubscribing! Update: Since the link to respond to creator leads to a page that can’t be found I will respond here. Like I told your rep. There should not be a cap at all I don’t care if it is 150,000 or 450,000 words. I pay for premium! iPhone speak screen has better voices than your basic offline voices. You are just money hungry and ripping people off by not advertising that there is a cap so people will subscribe! Then your rep tells me your working on a higher tier unlimited plan! I am not paying anymore money for this app. Premium plans don’t have caps basic plans have caps. Then there is the issue that it randomly stops reading and I constantly have to play it again. I don’t have time for that while working! And now with the most recent update I can’t listen to Kindle at all! It takes me to the kindle website. I make my selection if I’m on iPad it opens the book on the kindle website but won’t read it! If I’m on my phone it take me to the website I make my selection and then it takes me to the Kindle app where again it will not read! This deserves negative stars!!!!! Do not waste your money!!!! I regret making this purchase and will not be resubscribing!!!!!.Manajo_1Version: 3.2.3
From excellent to non-functionalFor graduate school reading for the past 2 years, I’ve used this app intermittently while also using Apple’s native reader for reading textbook and journal articles. I was originally satisfied with the app but noticed that this app has progressively gotten worse with its new changes, not better. You would hope for improvement not regression. First they added too many voices and half the time it wouldn’t load the voice I selected and would switch to different voice mid-read. That was at least functional. After returning from summer break, I discovered that Speechify has become non-functional for academic work. It will automatically import the PDF but it can’t handle the reading. It jumps all over the place. I tried with 2 different documents.
Although their prior system was time consuming, I did not mind completely processing the documents or complex textbooks myself if it ensured the reading order was correct and unnecessary text was removed from being read. It’s clear that they did not do appropriate level of user testing before releasing a system to “automatically” read that cannot handle all types of text. Minimally, they should have a kept a a manual import option to override these problems.
If you are a college student, do not get Speechify look into other applications or Apple’s text to speech works relatively well for many things..Jane PlainerVersion: 2.27.0

Well..So I get that things cost money to develop. It takes more time and effort than many people understand. But charging 189$ for a app a year is ridiculous.
Not having a option for Month to month is just as silly.
I feel if this app charges less people would be more inclined to purchase this app and just by mass this app would generate more money. I would have purchased it if it was 50$ a year and I bet many other people would do the same. But I won’t pay near 200 for this. So sale lost and I bet many other people would be in the same boat..Coolish11101Version: 2.1.2

DisappointingI tried the free version of this app based on all the positive reviews, but was incredibly underwhelmed. I tried to import from the "Books" app by sharing the file as instructions suggest to no avail, and eventually resorted to copy/pasting individual pages until suddenly it told me I'd reached my 200wd limit for the day??? They definitely just want you to buy the full version and it's not intended as a truly accessible resource. I'll keep searching..BrydhsonVersion: 2.1.5

Clickbait freemium garbageThe app would be great and encouraging for struggling readers if Speechify was transparent about their freemium model from the beginning of the app’s experience. I scanned an entire book and a few paragraphs into reading it at 1.6x speed, it slowed to a snails pace and went to some robotic voice. What a crock. Really takes the wind out of your sails to find that it’s 180$ a year when this is supposed to be a tool to help struggling readers. What a shame. This app has the potential to change lives through the way you read but has essentially made itself inaccessible, or at least completely useless, to a large portion of the population who might use it. Shameful..TcaspersenVersion: 2.17.1
Disappointed and Misled by Speechify Premium SubscriptionI regret subscribing to Speechify Premium. The app seemed promising, but I quickly discovered that the subscription plan is extremely misleading. Nowhere in the subscription details do they mention the 150,000 words per month limit. For an app marketed towards avid readers, this cap is laughably low—it barely covers a single book!
What’s worse is the lack of transparency. I expected unlimited access given the hefty subscription fee, only to find out about this limitation after paying. This feels like a blatant bait-and-switch tactic.
To add to the frustration, customer service is unresponsive and unhelpful. I reached out multiple times to address my concerns, but all I received were generic, uninformative responses.
Speechify may work for casual users, but for anyone who reads more than one book a month, it’s a rip-off. Save your money and look for a more honest, transparent service. Speechify is a major letdown, and I would not recommend it to anyone..E7YG4M3Version: 3.1.3
Not worth the priceThe concept of this application is great if only it worked properly. So many bugs. Commonly the screen going white and all the words disappearing while it continues to read or goes blank while editing and all your edits get lost. The phone app and destop app dont seem to crossover unless you delete your app from your phone and re-download it. It is a process though since they make you go through the entire welcome tutorial before giving you a chance to sign in. I think this app might work better for pleasure use or soley reading directly from the internet (however finding online university sites with modules are not compatible). Customer service has been fine, not much for the servicers can do with a buggy app! I would not reccomend this app if you are planning on scanning textbooks in and using for school as more frustration than its worth. Continuing to use only because I already paid the $200. *working on 2021 macbook air and iphone11, all software up to date..Rlgr12Version: 2.20.6

Scam. Horrible and Deceptive business practicesDon’t buy. Expensive and deceptive.
This company does not follow Apples policies.
When you “sign up” for the free trial, there’s nothing in your “my subscriptions” settings which allows you to cancel before the trial ends. If you try to cancel in the app, there’s no confirmation. So if you assume you’ve cancelled, you probably didn’t. Then you get your credit card bill of for almost a $200 US dollars…..for an APP. I contacted them and they were not willing to repeal their fraudulent charges which of course don’t show up on your bill until after the “trial period” ends. This app is a complete rip off. I will be taking further action. Complete scam..HordijjjVersion: 3.1.3

Don’t get it.Honestly, I’d suggest simply reading the thing you’re trying to read by yourself or putting it on free websites. I only got this because I wanted to have someone read a book to me someone that sounded natural, but you get to listen to about four words with a natural sounding voice before it says your limit for the day is over and you have to listen to that uncomfortable robotic voice. It’s honestly disappointing that how you guys work, especially since you claim to care about people who also have ADHD and dyslexia and struggle to focus on books or just reading in general you clearly don’t actually care if you’re making the limit so low you could’ve just put premium for extra voices I’m sure many people would have gladly paid for that.I’m not tellinglyVersion: 5.0.26

It’s super scummy to claim there is a free tier to the app then try to sell users on an over a thousand dollar lifetime licence, before the user has ever tried the software, by a startup that may not exist in another year. If it was worth the price the developers would not need to manipulate users into such purchase before trying the software.
