Where are the chapters?!Ordinarily I really enjoy this app despite its many flaws. Like turning the audio to absolute trash when listening to a book and going into another app on the phone. Sure I have to close the Chirp app to restore sound quality constantly but that’s not a huge issue right? (It is.) Sure I get annoyed that the normal features (like the ability to pause or forward to another chapter…) when connecting to CarPlay completely vanish. But what got me today is that despite updating my app I no longer have any visibility to the chapters of any book I listen to. Also not helping? DEVS STOP PUTTING THE GENERIC FIX MESSAGE SAYING YOU “FIXED” ISSUES. What issues? Why be vague? Where is the change log?Why not cite what has been fixed so users will know what issues have been addressed? We may not pay for the app but we pay for the audiobooks and as customers we deserve and expect the app to run seamlessly across platforms and for known issues to be fixed. I shouldn’t have to use Google and Reddit to find out the chapter thing was supposedly fixed four months ago and “just update”. The issue isn’t fixed. I’ve invested a lot of money into Chirp but the fact that I cannot even view the chapters is the final straw. As consumers and customers we deserve an app that WORKS..TijatVersion: 6.6.17

Oddly BuggyI love the idea of Chirp—buying audiobooks at a discount. I do not love the continued bugginess of the app. For instance, if you close the app while you are in the middle of listening to a book, the file will lose your place and start over from the very beginning of the book. If you put a book on the back burner and stop listening to it for a time (it’s not clear to me how long), the app will automatically delete the file of the book from your phone which will, you guessed it, lose your place. (To be clear, it does not delete the book from your library, it just seems to delete the downloaded copy of the book that I find helps to avoid issues of losing one’s place). This review is just based on the use of the app. In general, if you listen to a book quickly and carefully, you will be fine. If you do some things you should be able to do with apps on your phone, you may have problems. (And, at least in my experience, it is not especially easy to find one’s place again without a fair deal of searching in an audio file)..Brwhite15Version: 4.4.2

Meh.Sometimes you can find a gem of a title, but not like on Audible. I use both apps because I just want bestsellers sometimes, or new releases, and Audible lets me do that. But Chirp does give me access to books for cheaper that I otherwise wouldn’t spend $35 a title on which is nice. I will say, though, I don’t know what it is, but the quality is incomparably bad. Chirp regularly sounds like it’s skipping - which is literally impossible. Like every single person reading stutters on the word Chapter. It’s not like I don’t update the app, and it’s digital, so it can’t be skipping, but it’s always like that, no matter what. I also regularly hit play and have it bump back an entire 4, 6, 9 minutes and I’m confused and trying to find my place again, which, when I’m in the car, is impossible unless I pull over. I guess these are annoying things to complain about considering the price, but I just wish it was a little cleaner. It freezes, it jumps back to one spot, super frustratingI really wish this app would work. I love buying books from Chirp because they have great deals and I like supporting the “smaller” guys. However, if I can’t PLAY those books, it’s not a great deal. Once I’ve started a book, it seems to “stick” in one spot. If I pause the book or stop to do something else, when I return, the book is in a spot I’ve already listened to. I jump ahead, and sometimes it stays there - other times it goes back again. And if I close out of the app for any length of time, it returns to that original frozen spot. The time stamps freeze on that spot, so I can’t see where I am in the book - and it eventually jumps back to that original “stuck” spot. I’ve tried streaming the books, downloading the books, closing the app completely, deleting the app and redownloading. That last one works for about 1-2 listens before it freezes again. It’s EVERY book, not just one or two bad files. I’ve switched phones since the problem began - from an iPhone 11 to an iPhone 15 now. Same issues. I’d stopped buying Chirp books because of this, but I thought by now it’d be fixed and bought some books this week. Nope. All my recent (and older) purchases are unlistenable. It’s quite frustrating because when you buy a Chirp book, the only way to listen is through their app. I can’t play the file anywhere else. So I’ve basically just tossed another $30+ out the window. I contacted support months ago about this issue and never heard back. Just contacted again - hope they get back to me this time..YisadeVersion: 4.6.0

What happened to my favourite app?I like to listen to books at night. I need the timer so my book doesn't play all night. This may sound silly to some but I will use the timer to work during the day. It is a great way to time how much I get done. I need the timer. Why was it taken away? I also don't like that the information page is gone. I'm sure lots of people will miss this page. I used to be able too start a book, but still browse my other books. Now if I try to go to another page on the app, my book quite playing. I am not a fan of having the library use pages either rather than just the scrolling down. I have 21 pages and now it takes so long to browse through. The app in general runs clunky now. It's slow to start and if I change the place where I am at in the book, I often have to restart the app because the book will not play once I moved my place. I went to search for a book today, but the app would not show it in the search. Other books showed up in the search by that author. I finally had to go to my email and search for it there. When I found it, I had to click on it and open it from there. How many of my books are missing like this? Any book I have forgotten that I payed for, I may never run across again. App never works rightI love that I can get great deals on audiobooks on this app and that it’s available to use without a subscription but it never works right when I’m trying to listen to a book. It constantly starts my books over in the middle and I can never find my place again or in the case of the current book I’m trying to listen to a chapter will end and it will go back several chapters and replay them instead of the next chapter and it’s made trying to follow this book very hard. When I try to download the books to my phone they won’t actually download which also annoying and I think why I keep having issues with playback. It’s frustrating because I’ve bought at least 75 books from chirp and I don’t really listen to them because of all the issues I have when trying to use the app..Alpike12Version: 6.2.5

Downloaded Books Are Difficult to AccessI live in Alaska. I work in very remote areas with no internet or cell service. Unlike other books-on-tape apps, it is often impossible to access your DOWNLOADED books on the Chirp App. You are required to log in on the internet repeatedly to access your DOWNLOADED books. If you do not have internet or cell service, this is simply not possible. I twice reached out to customer service about this issue. I requested a telephone call to discuss. Chirp will only provide form emails in response and will not engage with you by telephone. Accordingly, I recommend that you use a different app than Chirp if you intend to listen to your purchases offline in areas without internet or cell service. Can’t control playback from lock screen.The deals are good, but I think it’s really frustrating that I can’t access playback controls from the lock screen. What makes it 10 times more frustrating is that sometimes I can and I can’t figure out WTH is preventing me from doing it all the time. The app and phone are updated. I have disconnected and reconnected headphones. I’ve tried it without headphones. Restarted everything I’ve canceled and restarted everything. after leaving feedback about this last week I could control it again from the lock screen, and I thought it was something as simple as closing out the background apps but now I’m trying it again and I can’t play, pause, rewind or fast forward from lock screen so I basically have to drain my battery when I want to read a book. Decent app; terrible siteI loved Chirp until recently when their site became unusable and impossible to browse. Books are miscategorized (like shoving Marcus Aurelius, George Eliot & other much older works under “Historical Fiction” instead of “Classics”.. you’d think people selling books would know the difference.) But worse is they’ve recently added a ton of shorter media that seems to outnumber the actual books. And I don’t mean an occasional novella, I mean a PBS interview with Jerry Seinfeld under “Teen Fiction” for some reason. If you try to sort any category by price low-high, you’ll see nothing but garbage you don’t want (assuming what you do want is an actual book). Really hoping they get their site under control because until now I was buying from them pretty regularly. Now I’m just saving my money & using Libby..MaheaterVersion: 2.39.16

GlitchyI have purchased a number of audiobooks through Chirp, however, I have finished few. The app is so glitchy I cannot seem to complete a book. First off, the player often freezes either when I have paused it or randomly well I am listening. If I try to get the audiobook to play, I get a loading symbol and nothing happens. Closing the player and restarting it does not fix it. The last time this happened the player did not work for several days. restarting, the phone did not help either. Additionally, the player frequently kicks me back to the beginning of a book. I can be on chapter 20, and when I open the player, it has set the book back to the beginning. It has also played chapters out of order or the same chapter repeatedly. I have spent far too much time trying to find the spot I was at in a book after being sent back to the beginning or to a random spot. I have deleted the app and reinstalled it, restarted my phone, and nothing helps. I have been using this app for quite some time, and it has been glitchy since the beginning. I will not be buying any more audiobooks from Chirp until they fix their app. It does no good to buy audiobooks you cannot listen to..MNPaigeVersion: 6.2.5

Glitches with appI haven’t listened to one book where the app doesn’t Glitch. I need to close the app and reopen, but then it starts 2 chapters back to where it first started to glitch. I have also not been able to play certain chapters, I need to go to the web to listen to the chapters or remainder of the book. Joke app- minuscule libraryIf you want an audiobook app with a cupboard sized library/database, chirp is your thing! Unuseable on m’y iPadThanks a lot. The new update requires IOS 16 or later, and my iPad will only update to IOS 15.8.3.
