StoryGraph: Reading Tracker App Comments & Reviews
StoryGraph: Reading Tracker Positive Reviews
Hi, I hope the developers see this!I love the functionality of this app for myself, however I think it could use improvements in the social area and the aesthetic areas. It’s very clean and easy to read which is great, but the app could benefit from more “photogenic” layouts like letterboxd. People love sharing screenshots of their top movies or their recently watched movies paired with the movie posters, and it gets people to download the app. I would like to be able to share what I’m doing on StoryGraph in an aesthetically appealing way so that more of my friends want to get the app and join in on the fun 😃 updates to profiles so that they display more reading stats, favorites, to read piles etc. for other people would be excellent! Additionally, on the social side, it would be nice if the timeline to see what my friends are reading/adding to their to read pile/ratings/etc. was more easy to see. The updates are rather large. It can also be hard to find people, and I’m confused about the difference between following people and being friends with them? What are the differences between the two statuses? Anyways!! Love the app, great alternative for goodreads. All my critiques come from a place of love, I really hope the app continues to grow and improve and eventually becomes a more social platform for sharing and discussion because more people need to read!! And reading is fun when you get to share it 🫶🏼.Version: 1.3
Third year using, still my favorite app of all timeStorygraph is hands down the best book nerd app. Of course the features are A+, like data tracking, challenge integration, and book scanning now too! I am so excited to keep watching this app grow. I really do recommend it to any bibliophile I find in the wild. I switched over from a big name book tracking site and have never looked back (my previous logs transferred perfectly too). I read over 200 books a year, so it gets heavy use from me and completely stands up to it. What really blows me away, though, is the thoughtfulness and dedication of the development team. Every feature decision is explained and clearly done in the most ethical way they can. Ratings are decentralized which de-incentivizes review bombing. The amount and type of social media type aspects are chosen with care, which makes Storygraph a breath of fresh air. There is a communal roadmap to communicate with users about development timelines and choices. I have emailed support even as a free user and received a thoughtful response from real person. The internet is a tough place and I am constantly buoyed by seeing how much grace the people at Storygraph handle it with. If you see this, thank you so much. Note: the app being down is not a typical experience. I have been using the app every single day for years and almost never see it down. Please don’t let those reviews dissuade you from using Storygraph!.Version: 1.10
Hope you read this! 🫣Great app. I’m still using Goodreads, but I had an idea that, first, I don’t know if it’s possible, and second, I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it to you before. As I read in one of the reviews, the company (which is excellent) is a “one-man show.” I think this could greatly improve the experience for us readers. One of the pros of Kindle is that, as you read, the progress is automatically updated in Goodreads. Additionally, you can rate with stars and leave your review directly from the Kindle without needing to use another device. I ultimately decided to leave the Kindle ecosystem because they try to keep you tied to them as much as possible, making the experience very limiting. So I recently switched to Kobo. It would be great if StoryGraph partnered with Kobo to allow their devices to connect directly with our StoryGraph account. This way, we could do the same from our eReader. I think it would be a win-win for both companies, as I like the Kobo ecosystem and its principles, and I also like StoryGraph. For now, both work separately, which is annoying. After reading for a while, having to look for my phone, which I sometimes don’t have on hand, to upload any updates or leave a review is inconvenient. I don’t know, just something that came to mind. Cheers..Version: 1.11
Really want to like it, just too clunkyAs somebody that loves to support smaller businesses and not put my time and money into the billionaire class, I was excited to find a Goodreads alternative that aligned with my values more. That said, I really want to like this app, but it's very clunky to use in my opinion. The design just feels sharp and unwelcoming, I have issues finding many of the books I want to add, many times I have to press action buttons multiple times to trigger a response, the profile page leaves a lot to be desired in terms of feeling personal and homey, the inability to crop profile photos in the app makes the app feel like it's a beta version and not something that's been out for years, and the barcode scanner zooms way to far in to be comfortable or practical to use. I continue returning to StoryGraph to gauge its progress because I believe this app has so much potential and I want to see it become the dominate platform to track and discover books. Maybe the website works better and the team just doesn't have the resources to invest into the app right now, but as a primarily mobile user who heavily utilizes mobile apps when possible, I just find myself defaulting to Fable due to the poorer user experience and user interface of StoryGraph. Please don't take this review too personally, I think the app is wonderful for the size of the team behind it and I have faith it will only get better as time goes on. I just also believe that the best path towards progress in our projects is through receiving feedback. Keep iterating and improving the UI/UX and I know in time StoryGraph will be my primary book tracker..Version: 1.12
Rapidly becoming my go-to book tracking platform!I’ve always been a reader. I started using another platform over a decade ago (pretty much the only one at the time!) but had been having reliability and usability issues with it for about a year when I discovered StoryGraph and decided to test it out. It has grown by leaps and bounds since then, has more features now than “other platforms”, and is a single feature away from becoming my primary choice in every way (and my understanding is that the last feature I rely on elsewhere is already in the works here!!). The customer service I receive from StoryGraph is light years better than other options. The communication from StoryGraph is commendable (especially when you consider they have only a tiny team of employees - small but mighty!). And downtime is honestly a minimum compared to other platforms - a little hiccup recently, during an unprecedented influx of new users when another platform was down, overwhelmed StoryGraph temporarily but it was communicated and fixed in a reasonable time, so if that was your first/only impression, know that it was the ONLY time I have experienced an outage in the 15 months I’ve been actively using it. I LOVE this platform more every new feature release. Give it a real opportunity to win you over as well!.Version: 1.10
#1 Fan!Just want to say a thank you to Nadia, Rob, (and the third member of the team whose name I don’t know sorry) for creating and maintaining my favorite app. I switched over in January 2021 and haven’t looked back since. I’m paying for a plus membership this year and planning to finally sign up as a librarian so I can give back to this app that has added so much value for me. Even on days I don’t read, I always find a reason to open it. I read a lot, 220+ books a year in the last two years, and the metrics SG provides have been incredibly helpful and rewarding. I know social features are evolving on the app, but my favorite thing is the ability to zero in on the books with no fluff. I don’t have to wade trough reviews or spoilers to get to summaries. I don’t have to deal with offensive comments on benign posts. I don’t even have to place star ratings to leave detailed long reviews and I can annotate specific pages and quotes in my books. I custom tag my books to keep track of which I read from my local libraries, Kindle Unlimited, and my personal library. The buddy read feature is incredible. I could rave for hours and I have stood on a soapbox about it to many an unsuspecting friend or stranger. I can’t wait to see where the app goes from here!.Version: 1.10
Great App!I’ve been looking for an app that was more user friendly than goodreads. I originally was recommended fable- however fable had too many facets to it that I really didn’t need. I was recommended StoryGraph from a friend and I found that it’s a happy medium between goodreads and fable! I like that you can give 1/2 and 1/4 star ratings, like fable. Also similar to fable is the ability to add labels/brief descriptions to other aspects of the book- however unlike fable, it’s much less over the top; there aren’t any unnecessary options or mechanics, but there’s still more to it than what goodreads provides. While it’s definitely more user friendly than good reads, my one critique is that the mechanics definitely could be a little smoother! Some of the buttons like the edit date button are really small and sometimes difficult to press without hitting the wrong thing. I wish there was a save/ finish editing button when done with reviews, or that backing out of something didn’t lead you back to your review edit, if that makes sense. Maybe there are options for that, but they are difficult for me to see and find- I think maybe with small tweaks to their apps design these issues could be fixed. Other than that, I’m loving it so far! I’m happy to not be supporting billionaires :).Version: 1.22
Love many of the features but others are lackingI love the statistics available, recommendations, ability to rate with half and quarter stars, and the yearly wrap up. I’ve been using this app as my place to track my reading for over a year now. However, some features are just insanely lacking. It’s hard for me to be specific in just a review, but there are aspects of the user interface that are frankly not intuitive or too primitive when compared to competitors. The most annoying thing I’ve encountered though is how the community features work. For the longest time, I’d assumed that the feature for adding friends was broken but it turns out….. you have to opt IN for people to send you friend requests. This has been pretty annoying because now whenever one of my friends downloads StoryGraph I have to ask them to go out of their way and turn that on so we can be friends. That’s just adding friction to making people active users and is pretty ridiculous imo. I overall think this app serves its overall purpose as a book tracker pretty well, but little things like this make me question if I (and others) will continue using this platform long term..Version: 1.10
I love this app so much!!This is definitely one of the top three most used apps on my phone and I can’t say enough good things about it. Importing all my data from Goodreads was so easy to do, the stats are unmatched, the search tools are incredibly advanced, and the ability to pick out your next read based on mood is something you can’t get anywhere else. They’ve just added a new giveaways section which is fantastic as well! I also love how easy it is to participate in and/or create your own reading challenges! There are so many great ones already on the app and it’s been a great way for me to track specific reading goals I have throughout the year. Combined with the unparalleled amount of stats they provide, I can’t think of any parts of my reading that I can’t track with this app! On top of all of this, the incredible (and incredibly small) team is so passionate and dedicated to their work on this app and it’s users. They respond to issues ridiculously fast and utilize the help of volunteer librarians to keep the book data up to date and accurate. I truly can’t name an app that I’ve ever had a better experience with overall!.Version: 1.3
Sooo much potential… but a few things:There's a ton of potential to be better than Goodreads (especially aesthetically), but it's a little ways off for me to stop using GR altogether and pay for plus. 1) Most importantly, kindle integrates with GR - that's gonna be hard to beat, as I primarily read via kindle. I know this will never happen, but it’s a HUGE perk of GR. 2) I want to see the cover of the book I'm currently reading on the home page - it feels a little less immersive when I just see the text. 3) I'd rather have my "up next" books on the home page rather than random selections from my TBR. (Also I'd love to see smaller covers so we can see more than just two without scrolling) 4) The book ratings need to be more visible. Not only do you have to click on a book to see the rating, you then have to scroll all the way down to the bottom. If you want this to be a true GR alternative, make the book ratings more accessible. 5) Please give me a Home Screen widget! (Make it a plus feature even) being able to see the book I’m reading and update progress from my home page would be so nice. 6) too much negative space in the app. Everything needs condensed a little bit so you can see more on one “page,” without scrolling..Version: 1.7
Updated review for a good app!Updated Review: To the developers, thanks for your response to my previous review. Glad you’re rising in popularity… a good problem to have! I’ve been enjoying how StoryGraph uses graphics to characterize my reading preferences, and the app is pretty intuitive and easy to use, I’ve suggested a few books that are missing from the database (such as Zadie Smith’s Intimations), and I’m interested to see if the ISBN function works to add new books. So far, I’m enjoying this app! Previous Review: (two stars on 1/4/24)I started using StoryGraph recently, as I’ve wanted to move away from GoodReads for a while. I like StoryGraphs’s clean layout and simple interface. But about 50% of the time I try to open the app, it just gets stuck on a blank screen. As I’m excitedly reaching my reading goals, my tracker isn’t working and I’m bummed! Also, when I tried to use the help function through the App Store, it consistently says they are down due to maintenance. For now, I plan to check out Bookworm, another newer app for those wanting to escape the GR review-bombing drama, but hopeful that StoryGraph will get back on its feet!.Version: 1.10
Awesome! (4.5 stars)This is better than Goodreads in my opinion. The homepage is accessible and easy to navigate. I like the quiz at the beginning so that your recommendations are personalized and you can change it at any time. It is quite obvious that the creator loves to read and knows what their doing. It also has reading challenges just like Goodreads. There is stats that shows you what genre, author, mood, ect. that you read the most; which I don’t think goodreads has. Another thing that this has that goodreads doesn’t is detailed reviews. Instead of 1 star increment ratings, it’s in increments of .25. You can also fill out a checklist about the book and submit that with the review. And one of the most useful things is that if you already have an account on goodreads, you can transfer all of your information to StoryGraph. There are a few small things, though. The page count on books is always around 20 pages over what the actual page count is. And since this is a smaller reading app, there isn’t any actual author reviews or anything. This is obviously not the apps fault though. Great app overall!.Version: 1.2
Game ChangerThis app is excellent. Fills a much needed missing source for ‘content warnings’ . The ability to select specific book content that I want to avoid ( or include ) is a game changer. For example: I like the the fast pace of crime novels such as author Lee Child, including his Jack Reacher series of 29 books, however as much as I like his writing style some of the books in the series contain personally triggering topics (such as sexual assault). Topics that are not necessarily evident from reading the summary or the first couple chapters. So I end up buying a book that I ultimately cannot read. However, many of the books do not contain topics I would rather avoid and STORYGRAPH allows me to specify my preferences, create a search for all the Lee Childs books, and it then marks each one as containing or not containing my specific topics. I have also used it to select from Sue Grafton novels as well look up books suggested from various book clubs or recommended by friends and family. I have not been able to find another source even remotely comes close to the benefits this one provides. Well Done!.Version: 1.10
Almost greatI really love a lot of aspects of this app’s functionality around reviews since it gives a much fuller picture than a simple star rating. Personally that’s a much bigger draw for me than the ability to give fractional stars, but since they’re there I do also make good use of them. I haven’t made use of the reading challenges yet, but that’s on my list for this year. There are a few weird things with the design of the app that make it difficult to find things. For some reason, I always have a hard time remembering how to get to my own reviews to look at and edit them. I also have not been able to finish any of the handful of books I started after seeing them on their recommendation engine. Perhaps I just need to get more reading history into it, but the books I’m being recommended all seem to have very mediocre ratings and few to no reviews. On the one hand, it’s nice to not be recommended just a list of NYT bestsellers, but their current recommendation algorithm seems to be swinging too far in the other direction..Version: 1.2
App featureBIG fan of this site and how everything is set up. I have similar notes about updating the community section to see more of what your friends are currently reading, updates, etc. however my biggest complaint about the app is switching tabs. I hope I explain properly, but when switching to different tabs of the app (like going from home to the community page) it appears as a new page almost? And if you were to accidentally swipe right (or intentionally I guess), it takes you back to the original section you were on. It’s a small thing, but it makes the app feel less smooth for some reason. Like it makes sense for the feature to be present when you are going through things within the same tab (like searching for someone in the community section and then swiping to go back to the main section of the page) but not to move between tabs. Geez I hope that makes sense. Anyways I love what you guys have done so far! And I’m excited to see the improvements as they come!.Version: 1.10
So much better than Goodreads! The best way to keep track of your reading! You don’t have to rate everything in whole number stars; you can use .25, .5, .75 too. You can track the version you read (ebook, audiobook, paperback, hardcover, etc.) and then see fun graphs and summaries of your reading habits. You can add books to reading challenges (before and/or after reading), set up buddy reads, follow other readers, set up or join book clubs, take notes on the books you’re reading, just so many features! It even hides spoilers from reviews and buddy reads until you’ve read past the spoilers in the book. You can transfer your Goodreads info too, so you won’t lose what you’ve built so far there. If you are a reader who wants to track your reading AND support a small business, get this!! Only 1 complaint. Creating multiple journal entries for the same book seems to be difficult. I just ended up making one long note for the book and it was fine. Don’t let that keep you from downloading this app..Version: 1.24
Best reading tracker out there!I’ve been using storygraph for a few years now, and it’s the best! this app has really come a long way since i started using it. i love the layout, personalized descriptions, and all the different ways to see your reading data! i use the buddy read feature with my friends, and it’s so fun to discuss the book without the risk of seeing spoilers (comments only show when you reach that point in the book!). storygraph has really stepped up their game recently with the monthly and yearly wrap up graphics, as well. their recommendations section and filtering of your tbr is the best! i’m a mood reader and so i love searching my tbr by mood or vibe. i especially love that this app is run independently and so i’m not supporting The Evil Corp by using the other (not to be named) book tracking app. i’ve even emailed the developer with suggestions and she responded within a day or two and implemented a similar feature not long after! i will be a storygraph user for life! 💜 thanks for working so hard to make such a great app!!.Version: 1.17
Love this app but would love for display to update fasterI really love using this app!! It’s a lovely ethical alternative to goodreads and the recent UI update has been a major improvement. Trying to get more of my friends to make the switch too. One small thing that would make a huge difference is if when users submit edit requests (ex. to change the status of a currently reading book to paused) if the API calls that list the books for display (ex. currently reading, read recently, etc.) on the homepage and profile page could be refetched. It’s a bit frustrating that the display doesn’t update currently unless you fully close and reopen the app. I also had a feature idea which idk is a good idea or not but i would love it so! Sharing just in case! Something I think is cool about the app is that it allows you to mark which books you own, which to my knowledge goodreads does not. My idea was that when you’re looking at a book listing, you’re able to see if any of your friends own it. It would encourage people to borrow books from their friends, which reduces over consumption and also makes reading more accessible to people now that new books are like $20 each, and sometimes libraries take a while for your hold to come through. You might want a privacy setting so people can opt out of their owned books being shared but yeah. I want it to be easier to borrow books from my friends and so I thought that would be cool! Thank you to the storybook team for all that you do!.Version: 1.19
Pretty good, but recommendations function not intuitiveI switched to mainly using Storygraph, because the toxicity to the social side of Goodreads exhausted me, and the stat and other review features are a plus. But I don’t feel the recommendations section is that intuitive. I tend to read in a lot of broad genres, but within those, I can be picky, and I wish there was a way to account for that. I loved fantasy and romance, but I’m *tired* of getting paranormal and urban fantasy romance recs, because I’m more of an epic fantasy person…with some exceptions, depending on author, tone, characters, etc. Also, I’ve definitely gotten some dark and taboo stuff that isn’t tagged as erotica (a genre I listed as “not interested” in my survey), and it happens way more often than I’d like. Also, why am I being recommended stuff I already have as “want to read?” There’s an option to not see them when doing a filter search, so why would they come up in standard recommendations?.Version: 1.3
Probably my favorite app :)The quarter-point ratings, the up-next queue, the filterable search of TBRs — this is SUCH a dramatically better experience than GR, not to mention the fact that I try to avoid engaging with anything owned by Bezos as much as possible, which I know is impossible especially because of AWS but I’m very glad GR actually has some competition! I do have to restart the app completely every few days because it freezes sometimes when I do a search, but it’s not as glitchy as GR and even if it was, I’d still prefer StoryGraph any day. My favorite feature is probably the ability to search and filter your own to-read list. I especially like that I can mark books as “owned” so when I’m at the bookstore I can check my to-read search and filter by “not owned” to help me decide what to buy :) Feature requests: 1) Would love to be able to access lists (created and maintained by StoryGraph) of books that won the Pulitzer, National Book Award, PEN/Faulkner, Booker, Eisner, etc. by year (or shortlisted / a finalist). 2) On the home page, would love to see the books in my “up next” queue as the featured books in the To Read module instead of a random assortment of books from the list. 3) Would love the book search result to default to the print edition (not audiobook). I’ve accidentally added several audiobooks to my To Read list because that was the primary search result and then it’s a whole process to switch editions to the regular book version. Thank you for making StoryGraph!.Version: 1.11
Just downloaded yesterday- already obsessed! There are so many things to love about this app! It offers so much more in the way of book tracking than goodreads (only other book tracking app I’ve used). Here are some things I’ve appreciated that the app can do that goodreads doesnt: - You can enter what editions you read/want to read (including audiobook and digital!) - You can track what hour of an audiobook your on instead of having to calculate the percentage - so many statistics!!! I love getting to see the breakdown of genre, mood, type (print vs audio vs digital), etc. That I’m reading, want to read, etc. - you can mark what books you currently own - dedicated and responsive customer service team - gives you prompts when you review a book - options for quarter and half stars when rating - doesn’t just tell you the (sometimes multiple) genres but the mood and the pacing - I haven’t explored this yet, but because readers can mark moods, the recommendations are going to be based on that so the AI can filter through what you’re reading and what you liked to give you more specific recommendations - can mark what books you want to read next (up to 5) I’m sure there are plenty of other things I’m missing that are great. And if there are things you wish the app had or could do, they actually have a page of what they’re working on and suggestions they’ve gotten to improve on the future! And again, their customer service is great, I already made a suggestion of being able to organize the TBR by series order, and they responded within 12 hours..Version: 1.7
The delight factor is highOver the last year, StoryGraph has become essential to tracking my reading progress, and I’m so glad to have an indy option. I liked it before the redesign and I love it even more now. I’m a PLUS customer, and I absolutely get $5 worth of value every month. I look at StoryGraph every day to plan my TBR. The new and look feel of the app is great. It is super clean and easy to navigate. The product team is entertaining all kinds of ideas for the roadmap, and they are small but mighty team! I was delighted to get a quick response to my feature suggestion, even if they couldn’t prioritize it just now. They really know what readers want from the data (making it easy to see how I’m progressing and engaging with my reading goals, and THEN letting me drill a bit into those trends) and social experience (NOT comment thread dumpster fire NOR a competition that alienates readers who may read at different paces and for different reasons). The delight factor is high..Version: 1.6
Best Book Tracking AppI love reading and I am always looking for my next book. I have unhappily used kindle, and Goodreads as ways to track my reading and get recommendations for new books. The Goodreads interface is terrible and the constant app crashes make it very frustrating to use for anything. In addition both kindle and Goodreads are constantly recommending the same books over and over. StoryGraph has been a true joy to use! An absolute game changer in the book tracking app realm! I have been using it for all of this year and it’s so easy, so user friendly! I’ve been able to read more than ever because the recommendations are new and tailored to my reading habits. I’ve written reviews for books, added books, and I’ve been adding the dates for my reading because it’s so easy. Not to mention all the cool data and graphs I have about my year of reading! I am so excited I’ve been telling everyone I know about this app!.Version: 1.11
By far my favorite book trackerI've tried a lot of book tracker sites/apps and methods (goodreads, fable, notion, obsidian...) and this is by far my favorite. I love how it describes and recommends books and how it tracks the data on what you read. I love that actually tracking the books you read is the priority, there were some things I liked about Fable but I really didn't like how it felt like a book social media (and also for like tv shows or movies??) before a book tracker. I like social elements I don't want that to be the focus I really like the formatting of this app very happy with it. My only things are I wish that for when you mark a completed book you could select just the month and year and not have to put the exact date of completion, I don't always know the DAY of the month but I'll know the month and year. I also think the UI of the app could use a little bit of work I think it's behind the website..Version: 1.20
Came for the books, stayed for the statsI switched to the Storygraph in 2020 after finding an ad for its website beta app on either Instagram or tik tok! I was already getting fed up with a competitor: the interface was outdated, & new features were scarce. The Storygraph seemed like such a bright shining light, & a great companion to my reading experience. Since 2020, the Storygraph has released so many fun & exciting features, but the base of it is the same: a clean, minimalist interface with as many stats as you could ever hope for! I love the reading challenges, I love that users can search for books based on mood, pace, length, genre, etc. Finding a new book to read has never been easier! The recommendations are not my favorite, but I also do not have the Plus version, so I’m guessing they would be better with the paid subscription. & in all honesty, adding new books to my TBR isn’t really necessary considering how many I already have!.Version: 1.7
I could not love this app moreI’ve been using StoryGraph for a few years now and absolutely love it. After being disappointed by missing features in other reading tracking apps, I am consistently blown away by Storygraphs range of features and their willingness to listen to their users and make additions and changes to features as requested. I love the graphs and charts and wrap up graphics, but my favorite features include the new pause function, ratings by 1/4 stars, being able to choose the exact edition and format you’re reading, easily tracking my owned book collection, and most of all buddy reads! I have used the buddy reads function with friends multiple times and it is such a great way to read together, spoiler free. Now I don’t even sound like a real person anymore because I’m just a walking, talking advertisement for the StoryGraph, but I swear this is genuine. 10/10 love you forever StoryGraph.Version: 1.17
The best reading companion!I absolutely LOVE StoryGraph and tell all of my friends to download it. I’m a nerd for data and stats and stuff like that, so I love getting to track all my reads throughout the year. I love all the reading challenges and how easy it is to join and add books. I’m always organizing my TBR and love that you can choose different editions and select which ones you own in order to get even more data about what you’re reading. They’re always releasing new features and keep you up to date with a fun newsletter. It’s also really cool how you can add friends and see what they’re reading and their ratings for different books that you search for. I think the way you review books on StoryGraph is great too. As a mood reader, it’s nice to see if a book is “dark” or “lighthearted” or “tense” when deciding what to read next. I know this review is scattered and rambling but I just love StoryGraph and all its little details so much. ❤️.Version: 1.10
Absolute MUST DownloadI’ve been using StoryGraph for 2 years and I am still so obsessed with it! Nadia, the founder and developer, is constantly working on new updates, features, and designs to improve user experience and I cannot rave about this app enough. I always highly recommend anyone who loves to read to download and try it for themselves! There are so many cool stats, graphs, giveaways, buddy reads, readalongs, reading challenges, and more that elevate your reading experience as well as learning more about your reading preferences that you might not have realized on your own. I have talked about and demonstrated just how cool StoryGraph is to friends, family, coworkers, and strangers (even at a bar)! I feel like most people are hesitant bc they’ve been logging books in GoodReads for years but you can import them to your StoryGraph account! Words cannot express how much I love this app and all the hard work Nadia pours into it ❤️.Version: 1.19
My Favorite Tracking AppI switched to using StoryGraph about 4 years ago and have never looked back! This app makes tracking books so easy, and has amazing charts and graphs to show what you are reading and how your reading shifts over time. The user interface is clean and sleek, while still being fun and colorful. And there constantly new features and updates that make the app better and better. The developer really takes user feedback in mind when making updates, and will often poll users on social media when designing features to gage what people would like to see or how they would use a specific feature. I perfect example is the new “pause” feature, which allows you to pause tracking if you put down a book for a while. This comes in so handy, for me personally, when I need to return a library book and wait for it to become available again, as then I will know exactly where I stopped previously. Another feature I love are the challenges. It’s so fun to track reading this way and the user interface makes it super easy to add read books to challenges or see what other people have read for certain prompts. I also really enjoy how the app’s “community” section is set up. I enjoy being able to look for friends updates and coordinate buddy reads based on books on our tbr, but love that it’s not a social feed of everyone else’s updates the moment I open the app. I can see what friends are reading when I want to, but my own reading, stats, and recommendations are front and center. I recommend this app to every reader I know, you can do so much with it or keep it simple, but either way, it makes tracking my reading easy and fun!.Version: 1.17
Love it. Needs improvementSo I was recommended this app. And I love the entire concept of the app. I love seeing the graphs and being able to easily log my books and kind of see the trends that I lean towards. However, the interface clearly needs work , it lags, and the scanner feature doesn’t work I wanna say 85% of the time at least with my phone camera and it’s the same for my roommate who is also using the app. What’s the point of having a scanner feature if you have to manually put in the ISBN in. I would also like to see this app incorporate some sort of color. Right now it’s just very black-and-white. And I feel like it’s lacking a little bit of personality. There is color when it comes to the graphing feature, but everything else is just very basic. With all of that being said I see so much potential in this app. I love the buddy reads feature and the Book club feature. I’m gonna continue to use it for now in hopes that in the future, it does improve its interface for its users..Version: 1.16
The app has a lot of potential!Update: well I’m not always the brightest crayon in the box! Swiping to navigate never occurred to me but I appreciate the devs reaching out. Still adjusting as I’m a long time Goodreads user but I love the potential of this app and am exciting to begin using it more regularly. I’ve been playing around with this app for a short while. I really like how informative it is. Like other readers being able to vote if the book is more character or plot driven is such a cool idea. However navigating this app is so frustrating. Why are there no back buttons or arrows? Once I tap on reviews for a book, I have to go back to the homepage and look up the book again because there is no way to just go back to the page of the book I was looking at. Please please please give us some back arrows and make the app easier to navigate. Such a little thing that has been so annoying..Version: 1.10
A great independent site + appI’ve been searching high and low for an alternative to Goodreads—for some reason, I wanted *all* of the same features so that I didn’t feel as if I were missing out on something. What I didn’t realize is how much those features drive me up a wall! I genuinely love Storygraph because it has helped me fall back in love with reading, not just *talking* about reading. Its goals are fun but not obnoxious to check in with, its catalogue is ever-growing, and its design is far more relaxing than Goodreads. Additionally, it means a lot to me that Storygraph is independent. I plan to subscribe after I finish cataloguing my library, and I urge you to do so as well. It’s not often that we find a website & amazing group of designers like the team behind Storygraph. They are transparent, creative, and hold a relationship with those that frequent the site. Cheers to more reading, with more vivacity than ever!.Version: 1.1
Love this app! This app is great! I love the different charts that show how metrics of the books that I read. There are a few improvements that I feel could be made though. One is how you update which page you are on in the book. I find it difficult to update and it can be a bit tedious with the small box. The second is recommendations based on a specific book. While the app gives general recommendations based on what you’ve read overall, it does not give them based on a book like “if you read this, then you will like this”. This is something that I’ve found really helpful on other apps, especially when I am in the mood to read books that are a similar vibe to each other. It would also be nice if it prompted you to rate the book once it was marked as finished. Overall, I really do like the app. It just isn’t 100% yet. I really hope they make these changes soon!.Version: 1.20
Hands down my fav reading tracking appI’ve been using this app for a year, and it’s been a game changer. The stats and charts cover so much more than just a number of books read. I can track over time what kind of books I’m reading and how it changes. There are *so* many reading challenges you can join, or create one just for you and your friends. Speaking of friends, the is a buddy read option that allows you to read books together in a group, but by requiring a page number for each comment it protects you from seeing spoilers by keeping other’s comments hidden until you reach that point. I also am a really big fan of how reviews are handled - there’s a star rating and option for written reviews like other sites/apps, but there’s also clickable options for moods, pace, characters and a space where you can see/add content warnings..Version: 1.6
Download this app right now!Life-changing sounds dramatic, but between StoryGraph and Libby, I’ve rediscovered my love of reading and read almost 200 books since I started on StoryGraph a little over a year ago, from finishing maybe 2 books per year before that. Multiple aspects of StoryGraph - helpful graphs or fun reading challenges helped remind me that I feel better when I do more reading than watching TV. Things StoryGraph is great at, versus other platforms you might be considering: 1. Not full of ads. Clean, pleasing aesthetic. 2. You don’t have to pay to have a useful, functional experience. 3. You can engage with the community aspects as much or as little as you want. 4. Content warnings include enough categories to be useful, and the community can submit additional warnings, which you can browse in a spoiler-free way. 5. The graphs are fun and useful in learning more about your own reading habits, and may encourage you to read more if that’s your thing. 6. It’s Black-founded and run, not owned by a certain megacorp. 7. Migration from GoodReads is easy, if you’re worried about losing your past data! Cons: It’s a newer app, with a small but incredible team, so there are some small bugs, but they’ve been incredible at responding to suggestions and adding features. The most recent redesign looks great! Thank you, StoryGraph!.Version: 1.6
DisappointedMany credible websites credited this app with being an alternative to good reads. I downloaded it with the upmost confidence in it and was left utterly disappointed in it. I have all of the books I have read in the past couple of years in the Notes app and I just type it in. Recently I have been wanting to convert to an app, so I looked up suggestions. I began to input all of the books and it took me over an hour. And to my dismay, it had tracked all of the books but it didn’t appear in the graph, which is kind of the whole reason I wanted this over goodreads, because it can provide me with a graph. I have waited more than a week to see if it would load and it didn’t. Not worth it, DO NOT waste your time with this. There are many other alternatives which I will now proceed to download after I DELETE THIS APP. OMG IM SO STUPID I WAS LOOKING AT THE WRONG THING IM SO SRY STORY GRAPH I GAVE U A BAD REVIEW FOR NO REASON.Version: 1.7
Great app for a world that doesn’t need goodreads anymoreNot a review yet bc I just got the app but the icon is not a great sign. It’s nearly the same as the one for BOOKSHELF. 🤔 Update: After using the app for a bit I wanted to update with actual feedback. So far I think the app is clean and smooth as it should be. Not a ton of clicking or tapping around to do things. There’s plenty of thought in making certain things easy (such as tagging a book that’s in the results list of a search instead of having to tap the title and enter the book and tag it and then go back). Adding goodreads was pretty smooth (shout out to the fast customer service rep who explained to me what I was doing wrong.) Adding lots of ratings and reviews in at once could probably be more streamlined but that’s not a thing people need to do often (maybe think about what students do at the end of a semester after reading a ton of books? Some ability to mass tag and date.) The recommendations seem to be very astute. I like the ability to pick things I DON’T want to read and even mark authors as “not interest” (though books with dual authors need a specific button for each author on the recommended results page. Just bc i dislike/distrust one author doesn’t mean I have an opinion on their coauthor. They just have bad taste in friends..Version: 1.3
Love tracking my reading list!Love this app! A delightful combination of book reading, reviews and data visualization. Super easy to use, and the tables and charts for reading progress are engaging. Plus, the “recommended” reading selections are always just what I’m looking for. I used to track my reading in a small notebook, but started using The Storygraph app in 2022. I fell in love with the pie charts and review prompts after a few months, and went back to my notebook and entered 3 years of reading history in The Storygraph to track trends in format (book, digital, audio), mood (mostly light hearted), page count, and more. I love reading reviews on this app, and use the recommendations and reviews to plan my trips to the bookstore and library. The Storygraph changed the way I record my reading, and my reviews help me remember which authors and series I want to revisit or continue..Version: 1.6
Best Book/Reading App in Existence!I honestly cannot say enough good things about this amazing app. I have been using it for a couple years now and it just keeps getting better and better. I absolutely love it. It hands down beats good reads or anything else like it. The data is incredible and so much fun to see about everything you read/listen to. I love being able to curate my book collection. I can always look up which books I have and even every single edition I own or have read. The categories are awesome and so useful. I love being able to track what I own vs what I borrow from the library. It is also great to be able to differentiate between physical books, digital, and audiobooks. The app is also incredibly user friendly. I could go on and on. If you love to read you have to try this app!.Version: 1.10
It had been SO good, but is so buggy lately….I LOVE this app. But it seems to be extremely buggy lately, which is disappointing. There have been multiple times now in the past few days and weeks that I have tried to open the app and I see just a black screen after the spinning wheel. I try to give it a decent amount of time, but nothing. I don’t know what the problem might be, but I hope it isn’t a permanent thing. I use this app so much and it’s usually so good. My phone is updated to the latest iOS (maybe that is the problem, I don’t know…). Other than that, the features on this app are great, even if you don’t have Plus. I got this as an alternative to Goodreads, and I like it so much better. The rating options and stats are awesome and more thorough. I just hope whatever is going on can be fixed..Version: 1.10
5 stars all aroundI have been using StoryGraph for about 2 years, and I cannot explain how much I love this app. I have used both goodreads and StoryGraph, only because up until now the font in StoryGraph didn’t match the iPhone settings I had (smaller/more compact). With the recent update it now does!!! It is far superior to goodreads If you love data, you’ll love StoryGraph. It has all the data points you could want from a tracking app, even with the free version. The developer keeps an incredible log of updates and is very active on Instagram. The CS responds so quickly and is kind and helpful. You will come for the fantastic app, but you will stay for the amazing creators (who post regularly on insta) and the incredible customer service. I could not recommend this app more highly or frequently..Version: 1.15
EssentialI adore this app. I use it every single day, multiple times a day, and I couldn’t ask for anything better. Right from the jump, it seamlessly imports all your GoodReads data and lets you move forward right where you left off. I’ve never once thought of going back to GR since finding Storygraph. It’s such a sleeker, more intuitive design, not to mention it allows for endless customization. I particularly like all the stats they offer and the nearly endless ways you can have to filter that information. The reading challenges set-up is my favorite, and makes every book so simple to track. This app is light years better than Goodreads in every single way, and best of all, its creator is committed to constantly improving it. Can’t thank her enough for this fantastic creation!.Version: 1.10
Favorite way to track my reading!I absolutely love this app! If you're dissatisfied with the linearity of other reading-tracking apps, Storygraph is the perfect solution!! I recommend this app to literally everyone because of the brilliant interactive features, flexibility in ratings, and the fact that it's constantly in development. While it's not as established as certain competitors and doesn't receive the same level of financial backing, the app & developer go above and beyond with innovative features that make me almost as obsessed with this app as I am with reading. Some of my favorite features include: charts tracking reading moods, genres, and more; reading challenges organized by both the app and other users; innovative ways to find books tailored to your preferences/mood; buddy reads with friends!.Version: 1.6
Only a few daysI have only been using this app a few days. I am really liking what I am seeing. I had been using 2 other apps of which for reading and book tracking and know I will be discontinuing use of one of those and have not made up my mind yet about the second one. I have watched a few videos on you tube about this app to get a better idea of how this works. Several reviewers have suggested switching from a large well know database to this one. I am beginning see why they would recommend doing that using this a few days myself. I have chosen not to name the other 2 apps, databases as my intention is not to be disparaging of the other 2. Between the 3, I am finding this to be the best for me. I will probably pay for the PLUS option when my free month expires..Version: 1.7
Absolutely phenomenalI love this app so much. I’ve never been one to track my reading history, but storygraph makes it so easy and FUN! It’s such a good way to interact with bookloving friends and to track all the books you’ve read. Not only is it super fun to see what your friends read and to review books, but the data tracking is PHENOMENAL and the graphics they let you generate each month is absolutely the icing on the cake. I love this app! My singular wish is that it were easier to change the edition of the book you read instead of making you remake the review. When I first downloaded the book, I wasn’t too interested in the exact edition I had read but now that I’m obsessed, it’s harder for my statistics to be correct. Nonetheless, absolutely PHENOMENAL app I recommend to everyone..Version: 1.13
The only app I’ve ever written a review of, because it’s just THAT GOODThere is no app I can recommend for bookworms than the StoryGraph. I used to use Goodreads, but the interface is just atrocious — StoryGraph is both gorgeous to use, and way more functional. I love the features, particularly the break down of the books you’re reading by genre, rating, etc. — which actually makes me excited to finish a book so I can see how it compares. Also, being able to mark a book as owned is revolutionary for my book buying — no more guessing! All the features of this app make it so much easier to track my reading. If I could give it 6/5 stars, I would. Ms. Odunayo, thank you for creating this wonderful app, and thank you for the team at the StoryGraph for being so receptive to user feedback..Version: 1.18
Almost perfect experienceBoth the website and app are great. I love the stats, the reading challenges, the recommendations, the filters based on mood and everything like that, and the review questionnaire. I reserve a star for the some features that I like from the other book tracking app that this one doesn’t have, which is stopping me from abandoning the other app entirely. First, I like the interactive component from the other app. You can like, comment and discuss the books, as well as join groups, message and receive notifications when people interact with your updates/reviews/etc. I love the track progress feature for each book that you’re currently reading (and the reading journal aspect really great too), which wasn’t available when I first joined the website as a beta user. However, I wish there was an option under the track progress feature to click when you’re finished reading the book which when clicked transfers the book to read and prompts the user for a rating. It’s such a minor thing that I never realized I would miss from the other app. I also wish that there was some way to see and interact with people that are reading/have recently read the same books as me around the same time in addition to the tabs for updates on people you follow and the community. I know that most of the things I mentioned are social media-esque, and that is probably not what the creators were aiming for. The storygraph is meant to be more of a tracker/recommendations service rather than social media, so it’s probably a bit unfair to take away a star because of that. But if sometime in the future they would be open to adding those features, it would be great. If not, I will still be using the app because it’s amazing for what it does!.Version: 1.0
Good, but not greatI s w e a r . . . If I misclick the add/edit tag button ONE MORE TIME, I am going to LOSE IT. That is, by far, my #1 gripe with this app… closely followed by an absence of a batch edit feature for adding/removing books in bulk from piles and tags. Or an ability to refine recommendations based on tags or the star ratings of read books. Or a “filter by pile” (include/exclude tbr, read, dnf) feature. Or a “stats per star rating” feature, instead of “ratings per book type.” Or a review filtering feature that sorts by star rating, post date, or popularity. Or a “pin tag to top of tag bank” feature. Or a highlight-importing feature. Or an ability to view public tags on a user’s profile and follow/collaborate on them. Or more extensive privacy settings. Or a “recommend to a friend feature” that appears on a friend’s profile and—okay, so maybe I have more than a few suggestions. I’ll stop. I’ll stop..Version: 1.7
