If you were choosing providers MAX would be the first choice for meTo be real with you I had HBO max for a long time now probably since quarantine and it’s for sure been a life saver in some cases trying something to watch. Me personally I can’t get enough of The Sopranos so yk that’s my rewatch show, but with The Sopranos there is so many other great classic shows and movies. The Wire for example being another great or even far on the other side of the spectrum of shows like Smiling Friends( I recommend, it saves a trip imo). It has a far range of shows and movies, for me I go straight to MAX for horror movies or I’m looking for something specific or unique. I’m trying to find the words for it really I mean when you first enter MAX the home page shows you this massive amount of variety. Talking about a David Chase:Sopranos exclusive documentary, The Original 1988 Beetlejuice( in prep or honor of the new beetlejuice), The Wire, The Last Of Us, HBO MAX original BARRY, Cabin in the Woods, and The New upcoming THE PENGUIN… and scene.? No?
Yes it’s true all of that wrapped up into one little side click on the first line of browsing on the home page. There is honestly so much to go over but for one thing to note on is that MAX is believe it or not as cheap if not cheaper than the other subscriptions, and who knows with what plan you have you could even add it on with that and sign in through provider. So much going on with one click away giving you all the watch you need!

App has log in issuesI really liked the HBO app, it was easy to use and you could have it on your phone or tv and it would stay logged in. I don’t like that the Max app keeps logging out from every device and to log back in takes forever. Customer service asked me one to talk to my provider but that it’s not issue. The problem is the Max app. I would be watching a show and out of the blue it would crash. When I try to log back in it would display an error message of can’t verify subscription. If I continue trying to log in, it would display a message to create an account. When I do create a new account it says I already have an account and still it will not log me in. last time I call customer service, they asked me to delete the app and reinstall it. It work for that time. They told me the issue won’t return and what do you know it log me out again. Even reinstalling the app several times did not work. It’s so frustrating! I’m spending more time trying to log in to the account than watching something. My Fandom of HBO is WaningI was a huge fan of HBO when I first watched Game of Thrones, The GOAT. I loved True Blood and Sopranos back in the day. His Dark Materials was fun but they took way too long to finish it and they botched the end of the series…like so many Media Companies do. They’ve done a few other monumental shows like John Adams, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Chernobyl, which was perfection. I still watch Hard Knocks. I’m sure I’m leaving some great shows out. But that was in the past. They’ve pretty much done nothing that even comes close to paying for. One of the biggest problems aside from the poor writing and casting, is that HBO takes waaayy too long between seasons. By the time the next series is out, it’s been forgotten about or my interest isn’t there. The most recent, The Last of Us, season 2 caused me to almost cancel my membership. The main character is hard to look at, the ‘girl power’ is unrealistic, along with the lesbian scene in the middle of murderous monsters and gangs was so out of place. It was shoved in there to appease whatever lesbian director they have. Straight trash is what it turned into. Had it not been for family members who also watch, I would’ve canceled and never looked back. Disappointed is how I feel about HBOMax lately. Enhance DC movies with audio description soundtracksI recently had the pleasure of diving into some animated content, and I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I have a soft spot for characters like Harley Quinn and Kite Man, whose dynamic and entertaining stories keep me engaged. Don’t understand why there is no new season of PeacemakerHeard you were going to make another season of Mindy kaling Velma. Why? It got the lowest ratings of anything out there. Moronic. Plus you switched to an app awhile back, and no longer allowed browser watching on iPad. So I can’t keep track of the shows I want to watch in more than one window. This service has been going down in more way than one for years. You promote woke garbage by Mindy, when she admitted on the Conan O’Brien show to being a sexual predator, and basically assaulting and threatening people Harvey Weinstein style. It’s a bit sick. Therapeutic and far more sane often than the so called real-worldWish i could scroll through titles as i write this then i could list the shows that have saved my life, quality and quantity, and been fun all the while. However this review window just popped up so doing what i can in the moment.
They used to call TV the “Boob Tube” while overlooking its impact on a young priviledged generations’ witnessing war atrocities and asking questions and taking action as a result as well as shows that were cathartic for the social changes that without art to help integrate would have been even more overwhelming than they already were. And I think the plethora and quality of shows these days in general is astounding and likely taken for granted as we humans tend to do; there are teams of writers these day more so than in the past and perhaps larger teams, more diversity and so much more integrated with knowledge in general such as psychology and politics and ecology etc.
“My List” feature nice as is option to download. I haven’t used Netflix in a long time so can’t review a comparison and Showtime…well again I don’t recall programs there vs here off the top of my head. Too bad all these providers can’t share content more readily as while it is great to escape and even conversely or concurrently get deeper into life and relationships etc. through art that also means my brain is not paying so much attention to the service through which i am watching it so no details stored in my old brain to list here. Also it is somewhat socially separating to have access only to shows in one streaming service vs another. Please bring back the original player controlsI use an Apple TV to watch Max, and the first issue I noticed with the new Max app (after changing from HBO Max) is that the player has been completely changed. Quick rewind/fast forward has been removed. With the old HBO Max app, I could simply click the left/right sides of the remote during playback to quickly move backward or forward. Now with the new Max app, I can only do quick rewinds/forwards by pausing first. This issue is compounded by the fact that resuming playback after pausing always jumps the video forward by a few seconds, so I can never actually resume the video exactly where I left off, and I can never skip to exactly where intended. The main reason I usually like to do a quick rewind is to listen again to something I missed, but when the video jumps forward upon resuming playback, I still end up missing what I'm trying to listen to, which is needlessly frustrating. The issue with the video jumping too far forward also happens when skipping intros. Whenever I hit the option to skip an intro or an ad, the beginning of the episode is cut off as it skips forward too far. This becomes very obvious with fast paced shows that have dialogue the moment the episode starts, as I usually end up missing the first half of a sentence of dialogue after skipping an intro. So then I end up pausing, doing a quick rewind, and then being forced to watch part of the ad and/or intro just so I can actually see the beginning of an episode. The player is just so much clunkier than it needs to be now, especially considering the player was perfect the way it was in the original HBO Max app. Developers, if you're reading this, please consider fixing this in a future update by reverting to the original player from the HBO Max app..P. Highly recommend to literally everyoneMost accessible app that I have found as a person with a visual impairment, it also has some of my favorite shows, and I appreciate how it actually attempts to cycle through new things on a regular basis while still keeping its classics, they even have an entire ASL section, which has been extremely helpful for my husband and now even our children who are learning ASL because of their father‘s hearing loss and more descriptive words because of the audio accessibility for my visual impairment, which is something that I can highly appreciate the formatting is easy to use and it has a new feature where it will auto play not just your next episode, but if there’s another movie in your franchise I’ve gone through all eight Harry Potter films with audio description one by one and it has saved me so much time and again I cannot brag enough about how accessible this app is for people like me.Enchanted pastel flowerVersion: 7.3.0
Room for improvementListen, I think the mobile app works well relative to other streaming apps. I just have some feedback to share that I didn’t have anywhere else to share. First: you should go back to being HBO Go. I’ll always think and say HBO Go when I think of you, even if it doesn’t make sense to the youth, who only know HBO as a streaming service and not a prestige cable channel. Next: there needs to be a way to hide/dislike content. I think most of the other streamers do this, and I don’t need anything fancy that customizes my recommendations. Just let me hide Bill Maher’s face, please. And last, but certainly not least: it’s kind of egregious of HBO to remove its own content (Search Party, West World, etc.) from the streaming service (and then add a bunch of other stuff). I pay for the HBO shows. When you remove them, I don’t want to pay anymore. In fact, I’ll purchase the content elsewhere and cancel my subscription just to spite you!! HBO Max you came through for me 😉I’ve had HBO Max for year’s. As, a matter of fact HBO was our first paid channel through cable TV as a kid back in the 1980’s. Back then it was magical watching Superman on television without any adds. I have to say I got that same feeling tonight watching one of the Final Four games. We are now retired and on a fixed income and it broke my heart after religiously watching the sweet sixteen the past few weeks on mainstream TV. Times are hard so these games are our major entertainment and of course I don’t mind the commercials to be able to see them. New update has many bugsHi, I’ve had hbo max for a long time now, but ever since the new update to max, it’s had a lot of bugs. Before the update I’d finish a series and be able to restart it from the start without playing at the ends of episodes. Also while it goes to the next episode, as well as starting from the end, it wil now sometimes close the app on the tv out. Additionally, it won’t save series under currently watching if they had been watched before and when restarted it still doesn’t save it. Not sure why these bugs are now here but hope they get fixed soon. It’s become almost impossible to watch as well as a lot of the cartoon series are being dropped and some missing episodes. Like Clarence is now gone and regular show is missing episodes. I thought Cartoon Network was bought out by whoever ultimately is over the Warner brothers shows but now they are disappearing after getting them so that doesn’t make sense. Mostly Hit, Unfortunate Miss..I see plenty of reviews complaining about the app not loading or installing on tvs and crashing tvs along with crashing other apps.. for me personally, I have two tvs, a Hisense 55” google tv and a Samsung 50” google tv that when I opened the HBO Max app I was prompted to download the new MAX app which was downloaded and installed on both tvs just fine. Both tvs opened the app with my account Information already switched over and logged in, both tvs had all my profiles on them ready to select and open just fine, both tvs also play everything in the content including the new SHAZAM movie. It is also nice having quite a bit of added content from Discovery+ to view as well, however my one gripe is that the Samsung tv does run really slow in the app and the quality constantly suffers due to that, in movies and/or tv shows even though that tv is newer, higher quality and closer to the WiFi router. My personal opinionI can honestly say that I’m thankful my phone company Kricket offers max as a reward for using their services. I’ve been enjoying this for a few months now I can only say there’s a couple of things I wish were a bit different with Max like there’s a couple of shows I enjoy, and they only show like two seasons of the show. I like watching for instance the show A Haunting and it has the season one and I don’t exactly remember but like say season 12 with it, it would be nice if all the seasons were on there. I can’t really have any serious complaints. I’m very happy with the new movies. I can’t wait to watch Sinners. My son and I watched the new movie Minecraft. We had a blast relaxing and watching it together. I have a one and a half year-old and she really likes shows like Bubble Guppies and Baby Sharks Big Show. 2nd to NetflixHBO max has quickly became my favorite streaming service after Netflix. Unlike other apps where I can end up scrolling and finding nothing, HBO always has something worth watching. The variety of movies/shows make me want to keep it as my only streaming platform. Every day, week, month I find something good to watch, it’s easily one of the best subscription I’ve had.
Ive had HBO for a few months and here are some of the shows/movies that I came to know and love. GOT, and then the house of dragons. All DC animated/live action movies/shows like young justice, peacemaker, man of steel, flash. I’ve rewatch harry potter multiple times now. And what made me write this review: the new conjuring movie. MAX vs HBO MAXThe previous HBO app was wonderful. I don’t like anything about the new app, aside from it having all HBO content.
Which is also a part of my problem with it. To much content. It just doesn’t seem very well organized to have to navigate through SO much content that I have no interest in, before I stumble across something I want to watch.
I think the fast forward/rewind in 10 second increments is extremely slow, compared to other apps and including the old HBO, which was great. Not sure if it’s do to all the additional media, but it’s just very slow. I also do NOT like that the progress bar only shows time remaining in a program, as opposed to also including time watched, like it use too.
I also get a lot of blank black screen issues if I fast forward. A program will start just fine, but if I fast forward through the opening credits, only the audio will work, as the video just drops completely out to a pitch black screen. That happened on Very Rare Occasions on the old app, maybe once a month or longer. With the new app it’s almost daily. So I constantly have to reboot my Apple TV device. I suppose it could be a compatibility issue with the Apple TV, but the old app didn’t have that problem.
Those are just a few issues I have with MAX. I wish I could go back to the old HBO MAX!

Ads on top of ads….Not a bad transitions from HBO Max to max. Really the same app with a different name in terms of functionality. My biggest issue was the decision to put pop up ads, asking to stream another show or movie, on top of the content you just decided to play. Even more insulting to your intelligence is when this pop up window is blocking a preview for another show or movie that is playing before the content you selected. It’s an ad on top of their own ad, all from the same company. Why would I change my mind and stream something else after I have already made my choice? Please remove these pop up ads of give an option to turn them off.
Also, interface elements do not disappear when content is playing. The 3 dots and the line across the bottom of the screen do not disappear after a few seconds, as they should. Other video apps handle this fine. Sometimes event the time and date stay visible..KriegrwVersion: 1.0.3
The content is top but issues with the interfaceI like the idea of the app it works OK. However, I have a couple gripes.
It doesn't work well off-line when I'm on an airplane. I find I need to connect my device to the Internet just so Max will start working and allow me to access my downloads. Otherwise, the first thing I get is not connected to the Internet or something like that.
The user interface is OK but compared to some of the other ones, Netflix for example it could be better.
Why are my items not the first thing I see. I know you want me to watch some new stuff so you put recommendations of the top but I find that irritating I want to go right to where I left off.
Having said that when I get to where I left off, it's not showing me the current show. I'm watching. It's not even showing me the last show. I'm watching. It's showing me a series that I finished a month ago as the first choice to continue watching. Makes no sense.
Your app also doesn't sync well with what I'm watching in general if I'm watching it somewhere else it doesn't always show up in your app as the most recent thing. Just continue watching two shows ago.

Organization system needs work.I know it seems harsh docking 2 stars for organization but I haven’t fully explored the rest of the app so I don’t know if there’s anything else wrong. Anything else I might politely object to. The reason I haven’t fully is because from what I can tell it just has “tv”, “movies”, “hbo”, “new & notable”. Whereas the old HBO Mac organization and menu format was more extensive than just the standard Netflix-esque “we’ve separated tv and movies, now scroll”. The things mentioned in the app description at the time of this comment was, not necessarily in this order, “DC Universe”, “Harry Potter”, “Food Network”, “Magnolia Network”, “TLC”, “HGTV”, “Adult Swim”, and “HBO”. However, it’s only “TV”, “Movies”, “HBO”, and “new”. Where this is going is. Is there a way to separate all of those networks/franchises and other stuff (like cartoons and other stuff) in a tab system similar to the old one? Like how other apps and the old version did? Not the same obviously, but similar. A new app doesn’t mean everything has to be different..EearVersion: 1.0.1
Better playerFirst off, the whole thing feels a little more stable which is nice, so GOOD work there.
Simply a better set of options for organizing and viewing your own list would be welcomed.
What is NOT great is that the point in time that you are at in a particular video doesn’t show. Other streaming apps either show it to left of the progress bar or on the actual point at which you are. It would be a much nicer experience.
Another gripe about the progress/time scrub bar is that the arrow forward/back buttons on remotes no longer nudge forward or backward in 10 second increments. Instead it engages fast forward at a speed that is way too fast to quickly stop. It is very frustrating, and brings me to my final issue…
The fast forward/rewind speeds of the actual forward/backward buttons need be addressed in that there needs to be a much slower first-press speed, and a much faster last press speed; I mean slow-mo to fast enough to get to the midway point of a 3 hr movie within a few seconds and completely fast forward through the entire thing in under 10 seconds. It would be extremely welcome for us.
Lastly, as a lover of all things Discovery (especially ID), BRAVO on the new integration. It is a big task and I’m sure will only improve with time. We absolutely love all of the options available. Now just give a new show or movie a chance to gel before unceremoniously ripping it from the service - in some cases with forever cliffhangers - and you are the best thing available to consumers by a mile!

Screen Rotate Now WorkingLately, Max has been making me very upset. I have an iPhone 12 mini. The past 2-3 weeks, the screen auto rotate has not been working. I make sure portrait orientation lock is off, and it used to rotate correctly to either side. Now, it only stays locked on one side with my volume buttons on the bottom. It won’t rotate to the other side. Personally, I like to watch it with my volume buttons on the top because it’s easier for me to change the volume.
I know the gyroscope in the iPhone still works because I can still watch other videos on other platforms, and when I tilt the phone to either side it works there.
I’ve restarted my iPhone several times, and I’ve deleted and reinstall the app twice now, but it’s still not working. Please fix this. Max is my go to streaming app. Please don’t make me switch..Cic0190Version: 5.8.0
Freezes and other issuesTypically, I don’t write reviews but this one has me so angry. I have absolutely no idea what happened to this app. Earlier in the summer all was going well when it was still packaged with my AT&T plan. I resubscribed because it has great content and I was willing to put up with ads. But the app is horrible. Terrible! When it goes to the ad break, it remains on the show I’m watching and it just freezes. The ad timer is still counting down. Plus I watch with the subtitles on and I can see that the dialog is still going though the show is frozen. I see that at least two other people have had the same issue. Is this a ploy to get me to spend more money for the ad free version??? I go to update the app hoping it gets better…still the same experience. Improvement neededI have subscription through AT&T and constantly get signed out. Better instructions needed to sign in again if account was already connected to MAX. When trying to connect through provider, kept getting message that subscription could not be found or taken to a screen to set up account with no other options. When trying to set up account, then told email already exists and to verify email. After verifying email, taken to profile screen which will not work except to add a new profile. None of the profiles will activate and cannot move past this screen. After several attempts to fix (delete & add app again, restart device) I decided to try to sign in again with MAX account & it finally worked. So apparently once you create a MAX account, you should be able to login and not have to go through the provider sign in. Scrubber ruins the whole appAside from the scrubber, this app is perfectly serviceable and does what it needs to do to display content from Max. However, actually watching that content and trying to control the viewing of it is awful. I don’t understand why this app can’t just use the native Apple scrubber like every other app. If I’m watching a show and I push the back button it doesn’t just jump back. It brings up the scrubber. I then have to push the back button again to get it to actually move back. This is infuriating. Please just use the Apple scrubber. The other really annoying thing is the insistence on showing ads while the credits of the show play in the corner. If you actually want to watch the credits or read what the credits say, you have to arrow up and select the credits. Awful app usability reliabilityMajor issues with the ads loading. You might think this is a good thing, but it prevents you from watching your shows. The episodes will freeze when an ad is supposed to load but you can see the subtitles still going in the background and no ads will play. Sometimes the ad timer will also pop up on the top but the show remains frozen after it’s complete. Seems to only happen for shows not movies. Nothing fixes this issue, not restarting the app, deleting the app, or pausing and replaying. The forward and back 10 seconds buttons also disappear when the ads are supposed to show so I cannot even try to go back or skip. This also messes with when the auto next episode button pops up, it will skip to the next episode early because it thinks more time has passed in the episode than actually has passed because of the video playing in the background while ads should be showing. This happens on both my phone and iPad. Very frustrating. Makes me switch to a different streaming platform every time. So unimpressed with the Max app especially since I am a new user. Probably will cancel my subscription once the deal ends. I hope they fix this issue soon because I am not the only one having it, there are forums with similar issues online. Considering cancellingI have been paying for the ad free option of HBO Max for several years now, essentially since the app launched. I’ve used it nearly every day since then. It’s always been my number one streaming service. Now I’m seriously considering cancelling all together. I’ve just taken a look at this new app and I’m really shocked. This is such a downgrade in quality. To the point that I feel like paying for it is a waste of my money. When Max was announced I assumed it would just mean a rebranding of the app I already used. Just a new name and maybe some more hubs added for additional content. I don’t understand the thought process behind creating a whole new app when the previous one was fine.
What irks me the most is the design and confusing layout. One of the main reasons I stopped using Netflix was due to their terrible layout. Even though Netflix has a lot of content I find it hard to ever find anything to watch because navigating their selection is so difficult. The navigation on HBO max was always LEAPS ahead of any other service. I found navigating it very easy to do. However all of the features that I enjoyed on the previous app are just gone now. And Max looks a lot like Netflix now. I really don’t now how I’m going to use this. Unless there is a massive overhaul in design change and navigation soon, I will cancel my subscription. UI is pathetic.HBOmax had a user friendly interface that compiled all the shows into categories that made them easy to find and gave good recommendations based on the content you were in. Now max does this worthless amalgamation of all of its content so you NEVER MISS A SHOW OR MOVIE. It’s irritating and it makes me want to leave the app more than watch a show. Before I could go to the sub categories and find exactly what I was looking for, or find new content that I wasn’t even aware of prior to starting up the app and looking at the home page. Now I’m bombarded with endless shows and movies that I have zero intention of watching and when I do find something that interests me even remotely the lack of any follow up material is beyond lack luster. Adult Swims hub was great for watching a lot of shows I grew up on or just enjoy and instead that’s gone. Have to search for my shows like truffle pig hoping just to find one. Before I’d watch multiple shows because they were all conveniently placed for that specific reason and now I forget half of what I’m looking for because of the constant need for max to validate it’s terrible box office performances.

Troublesome with AdsThe streaming experience on iPad and laptop is unacceptable. When an ad break begins, the video pauses on the last scene of the show, and the ad countdown appears as usual. However, instead of transitioning smoothly to the ads, the video often remains frozen, with subtitles still playing, for the entire 1-2 minute ad break. In some cases, the ad never loads at all, leaving the screen frozen for up to 3-5 minutes before resuming.
When the show finally resumes, the subtitles are out of sync for another 1-2 minutes. With ads appearing so frequently during episodes, this makes the platform nearly unwatchable. I’ve followed every troubleshooting recommendation provided, but nothing has resolved the issue. This problem is particularly frustrating when watching series rather than movies.
Additionally, there are significant issues with rewinding. A single 10-second rewind works fine, but anything beyond that causes glitches. The video either refuses to load or rewinds much farther than intended. In some cases, an ad break corrupts that part of the show entirely, making it impossible to watch, even if you exit and reload or try rewinding again.

The app lagsWhenever it is time for a commercial break, instead of pausing the show and going straight into the advertisement, the show will pause and stay STUCK on whatever screen/frame it paused on for 2-3 minutes and THEN it will start playing the adverisements ; which last around an additional 2 minutes. So I’m waiting 5 sometimes 6 minutes between “Ad breaks” just for the show to come back. (And actually , it could be longer but I am just estimating, I never really timed it. )
Not only that, the lagging messes up the flow of the show and clashes with the auto play somehow and the next episode will try to start playing before the current one has actually ended; cutting off the end portion of the episode I’m watching. If I try to rewind, the rewind button/time stamp does not correspond with what part of the episode that it is supposed to.
I do like this streaming service for the content, but if you think that I, in an attempt to avoid the disruptive Ad’s, am going to pay $17 for THIS, this right here?!…. then you are mistaken. I hate this appI have the HBO Max app on Roku and on LG TV. I absolutely hate them. There are no buttons for fast forwarding on the app and the fast forwarding with clicking on the remote goes so fast that you skip past where you actually want to stop. This happens on two different TVs and both apps. sitting here, I have quite literally watched five sets of commercials because every time it fast-forwards it goes so fast that it stops at the wrong spot and then I have to watch the commercials from that wrong starting point. UnwatchableSome many Issues with streaming. When it comes time for an ad, it will pause on the last scene of the show and show the ad count down like usual, it will sit there with the subtitles still playing but the video paused until the 1-2 min. ad break is over, then it will switch to showing the actual ads for 1-2 mins. Then when it final brings me back to my show the substitute are all off for 1-2 min. With ads being so often on each episode, it is almost unwatchable. I have tried everything I can think of the fix this issue including all their troubleshooting recommendations, and it hasn’t helped. It is mostly a problem when it comes to watching series, rather than movies. It also often has problem when you try and rewind the film to a certain extent. With one 10 sec rewind it does fine, anything more and it will glitch out and either refuse to load or continuous back up far beyond where I told it. Apple TV app is complete trash.Not to be harsh, but the Apple TV app is garbage. Ads are horribly placed and happen at random times throughout shows. Someone could be in the middle of talking and the whole screen freezes for about 30 seconds and then ads start playing. Sometimes a full screen ad with a cutout box will show up and you can only see 1/4 of the show the rest of the screen is ad and you’re missing stuff. Towards the end of shows there will be minutes left and the timer shows up counting down to the next episode and completely cuts out minutes of valuable programming so you miss things that happen at the end of every episode. This wasn’t always the case so whatever changes were made in the last update should be rolled back or remove ads until you figure this out. This is why and how people lose subscribers and once you drag your feet to address it - the value in the service is already lost and it’s harder to get people to come back because you’ve already blown your chance. Too many unresolved bugs, the experience is not worth it.HBO Max, or “MAX”, is probably the worst streaming application out there. It has various bugs on my smart TV and also the new iPad Pro. I used to pay for it and canceled it because I can’t stand how bad the application is. Then I got access to it again because it’s now included in my AT&T membership. I’m now contemplating about switching to another carrier so I can take this application out of my life, simply because of this one issue. It happens every other day; when I open the application, I have to connect my provider from scratch every single time.
This last time it was really infuriating. I downloaded a movie to watch while I’m traveling. Next, I’m traveling, and when I clicked on the application it asked me to connect my provider again. When I did it and went to downloads, it no longer showed the downloaded movie there. The funny part is the application still holds the space required for the movie, so it’s there, but I can’t watch it or delete it. I asked for the movie, not the audiobookThe Apple TV app is an unusable piece of garbage, and prompted me to cancel my Max subscription. Here’s the issue: the app will intermittently play a plain black screen, over top of the correct audio. There’s no predicting when it will happen, but once it starts, every show or movie will play in its entirety, with normal audio and a completely blank screen. It drives me up a wall. I’ve had temporary success with force quitting, rebooting, switching profiles, unplugging and reinstalling the HDMI cable or uninstalling and reinstalling the app. But eventually, invariably, the issue comes back to ruin movie night. Frustrated, today I bit the bullet and bought a brand new Apple TV 4K Ethernet. After I installed everything, I was just itching to try the Max app. Breathlessly, I clicked on the app and was greeted with the familiar, friendly jingle and calming blue menu. I could see the promised land;Latte Larry’s was calling my name! Max worked PERFECTLY… for exactly one hour. Then the same old black screen issue started all over again; playing all my favorite shows as if they were podcasts. ICE AdsI canceled my streaming subscription after being informed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ads are appearing on platforms I trusted.
These ads are a harmful misuse of mainstream streaming channels. ICE’s enforcement-focused messaging promotes fear, dehumanizes immigrants, and normalizes surveillance and detention policies that cause real suffering for families and communities. Streaming services should not amplify a federal enforcement agency’s political and coercive messages alongside entertainment and news. Doing so erodes public trust, turns leisure platforms into instruments of state power, and signals that profit and ad revenue trump ethical responsibility.
For viewers who expect safe, neutral spaces in their homes, these ads cross a line. I refuse to support platforms that accept money to broadcast messaging from agencies whose actions I find morally objectionable. Effective, responsible platforms should reject ads that contribute to harm or stigmatize vulnerable populations.
I’ve canceled my subscriptions and encourage others who disagree with this practice to do the same or to demand transparent ad policies that prohibit content from agencies or organizations whose activities undermine human rights and public trust. App has SERIOUS GLITCHES!Every time I stream the app on my tv from my phone it glitches. For example, I’ll put on a show I want to watch, put on an episode and it’ll work after I exit out of the app. But as soon as I turn my phone on and go into the app it completely restarts the episode of the show on my tv. I cant turn up the volume of what im watching from in the app, I cant fast foward or rewind the episode without the entire episode starting over because I entered in the app. It’s especially annoying when I turn my phone and the last app I was on was HBO so it’ll automatically restart after I enter my phone. The app has other glitches too, like not being able to turn the “read aloud” subtitles off that talk over the entire show I’m watching. UnnecessaryThe new Max is terrible! It does NOT keep track of where you left off with a series so you better write it down, take a picture, or have a photographic memory. Also, if you want to watch a specific episode, you have to choose the episode prior to that, because it starts playing from the end of the episode you selected, and starts the next one from the beginning. For example, if I want to watch S1:Ep3, the app will play the credits from that episode, and start playing S1:E4 even though that isn’t what was selected. Very annoying! You no longer have the option to choose your own picture for your profile. I also can’t access everything on my list from the home screen. I have to use the left navigation and choose “my stuff” to access my entire list. I’m not sure what prompted these changes but the previous version of the app was just fine. These “updates” were completely unnecessary.

The Worst Version of its PredecessorsHBO Max was, to me, the best streaming platform out there. It had a great design, a pleasant user experience, and was organized better than its competition. Max is like the little sibling that didn’t get enough attention from their parents. The calming purple of HBO Max has been replaced by a God-awful blue color that hurts my eyes whenever I look too long at the screen. (Seriously you could just keep the purple? It set Max apart from everything else!!) We no longer get Hubs, which was my favorite feature of HBO Max. Now we have an ugly top menu with only a couple options. Navigating the app for the first time on the tv nearly broke me as the app kept fighting me when I wanted to navigate away from the top menu and back to the featured content. It’s honestly what I expected from the Discovery merger. There was so much potential here but it looks like Discovery wanted to rip out the guts of HBO Max and ship this as fast as possible. The result is an ugly, difficult to use mess. I have to double click to unpause content now. Peacock does that and before this app came out it was my least favorite streaming service.

Original: Max also does away with the side menu hub. Now you have to scroll to get to the hubs. This is significantly less convenient than HBO Max, with its side menu hubs. Max doesn’t do personalized recommendations like HBO Max used to do. It just recommends the things it spent a lot of money on line And Just Like That, Friends, and South Park. Max doesn’t allow you to not play the next episode. If you back out of the auto play countdown when it starts, the rest of the episode will play, but the back button no longer works until the next episode starts. All the reality TV garbage I never wanted and never watch now clutters the app while browsing it. HBO Max used to be the app I could browse and find something I wanted to watch. I have no complaints about the content. By far id say HBO is my favorite of all streaming platforms when it comes to the content. However, I cannot say the same about the app itself. Not only that but also, HBO is the only app that doesn’t give you an option to sign in to Roku TV through my phone. I still have to manually put my info with the remote. Day 20 somethingIt’s been a few weeks into my subscription , at this point I refuse to change subscriptions to another service because I do catch random programming I enjoy …but I got the low tier with commercials , I don’t mind the commercials but the app will cast and play movies at full volume and in Spanish or worse yet Descriptive Audio Spanish , so it’s like I just stole from a bodega and the owner is yelling at me when I try to watch a movie at first …I can fiddle with the settings some to get around the oddity , but the setting to turn the descriptive audio off is removed from the UI …which is also part of the glitch or problem . Whatever it is , it’s almost comedically engineered to frustrate . Customer service is non existent . I’d been contacted once ..my first contact I was given the equivalent of a screen shot from a trouble shooting faq they’d developed . So they did not read my email . The second time they reached out was a customer service form they sent me …because apparently reading my complaint on the app on the App Store or reading my email prior wasn’t possible . Worse than the previous appI don’t know what’s wrong with this app? The previous HBO max app had a whole host of problems, and some of them have been resolved here. However, the new app seems to have introduced a bunch of new problems. We have a TV with Chromecast, so casting the app from my phone is the only way to watch HBO on our TV. The app constantly loses its place in whatever show we’re watching. Anytime we pause the show for a bathroom break and come back, the show starts from an entirely different spot that we’ve already watched (sometimes starting from a previous episode). Then, we have to search for the spot we were at, and the scrubbing doesn’t show thumbnails of the current screen as I search. It’s a big game of guess and check, and each time I guess, I have to wait 15 seconds for the show to load before finding out if I’ve guessed correctly. Sometimes if the app is feeling especially spiteful, it will throw an error and log me out completely. There’s also no “skip recap” or “skip intro” button when casting from the phone which is just annoying. Why create an entirely new app if it’s no better than the last? The lack of respect for cartoons is crazy…Hi, at first HBO Max was one of my favorite streaming services. It had a ton of content that I watched consistently and it was pretty reliable when it came to the app itself. But by 2021 it’s very clear that your catalog (especially the animated catalog) needs a lot of work. Not only do you remove shows that YOU OWN for no reason, you also do it without warning which is extremely frustrating. Doesn’t keep my accounts linkedI use to pay for MAX and never had an issue. I then found out my mobile play through AT&T comes with MAX included. I cancelled my out of pocket plan and linked my AT&T account with it. At first it failed and said I don’t have the subscription. I kept trying to link it and it kept failing. I found a weird way to get the account page to throw an error and then for some reason after the error goes away my account links up fine. Biggest problem is is that I have to go through that every other day I open the app. If I don’t open it for 24 hours I get the message saying I need to resubscribe again. It’s not worth the hassle to use it frequently. Does this both on my iPhone with all the latest iOS updates as well as my second gen AppleTV 4k.

Worst User interface of All TimeActually the worst user interface OF ALL TIME. Everytime I go to watch a show from where i left off i’m like 3 episodes behind. Problems with commercialsI had this app in the past and I paid for it without commercials. I loved it! The content is wonderful, there’s so much to watch!
I decided to cut back on all my subscriptions and this was one I got rid of, but I missed it so I decided to get it again.
This time there are commercials and they mess everything up. It really drives me crazy. I decided to watch Game of Thrones and the commercials will get stuck. They don’t play, it’s forever loading and doing nothing. When the commercial gets ready to start the show continues, but doesn’t. I use subtitles and I can read what’s happening, but the screen stays frozen. After a few minutes of just reading what’s happening the commercials finally play and then the show starts from where it thinks I was. When I try to go back I have to go through the process all over again.
It’s very frustrating and even more frustrating that I’m paying for this and it’s not working properly.

App will no longer be kid and autism friendly.Starting in January, and within the next few months, this app will be shifting to family and adults only. And it will no longer be everyone including special, needs friendly when it comes to the shows airing on it. I like to have both adults and kid shows to watch so I’m not limited to one or the other. And this is now going to turn into one of those one or the other type apps for me. Even though it has a lot of sitcoms and stuff that I like to watch and I’m going to miss those I am not going to support an app that focuses only on mostly adult and family Which by definition means parents and teenagers which is not an ideal level for me of things that I’m able to handle watching without getting scared unless it’s reality TV. For fictional TV and stuff like that because of my developmental level of functioning due to my autism and of understanding this app is no longer accessible or ideal for me, and I will be looking for something else that is accessible. you guys used to be awesome and kid and special needs friendly but now you’re not. Whoever decided Max should be a thing needs to be fired.The whole rollout of Hbo Max’s new “Max” platform is an absolute joke. First off, on launch day Max wasn’t even available on my Roku TV. Tried to google how to make it work but the internet doesn’t know what Max is, only what HBO Max is so all troubleshooting for “max” was useless. Waited for them to fix all their disastrous errors and tried to log in the next day. All of a sudden my password is not correct and to update my password I used the web address provided on my tv screen. Each time on the web address you clicked Sign In it would take you to the App Store to download the Max app. Once the app was downloaded I proceeded to attempt sign in using the forgot password option, it emailed a link that I then updated my Password ON A WEB BROWSER!! What did I need the app for? This whole thing is completely not worth even having the service anymore and even though it’s minor in the grand scheme of life, in the moment it was frustrating enough for me to consider cancelling my subscription that’s increasing in price anyway with this new rollout.
