Essential app for all singers and musiciansIMO, IReal Pro is essential for all singers/musicians. As a singer, we tend to learn music differently (playing by ear) than musicians with an instrument. Because of this, there tends to be gaps in the learning music process. When I bought the iReal Pro app, I quickly realized those music gaps were filled- for example, charting. Full disclosure-I did take a recent irp class. Alot of the class was focused on the edit mode/charting. After I got used to the edit mode and creating my own charts (in a small amount of time), I found this process very easy and fun. The irp cons would be to put more detail in the step-by-step instruction videos per device and slow down each step please. I found even stopping the video/s and rewinding each step ended up taking longer. I say all this because this was the reason I took the class-to get a better irp understanding. Also, a longer template would be helpful. Is it possible to create/add as many bars as the tune calls for? 😃 Maybe in the future, irp could expand to a window desktop version other than a 3rd party version ? Recently I had a few irp troubleshooting issues and Warren, one of the support team members worked with me throughout the day via email to get them resolved. He was very e-mail responsive which I appreciated. I was relieved that it was the same person I was dealing with too. Warren was very helpful ! Cost of app is reasonably priced which is very much appreciated too. All in all, I’ve had a great experience with the iReal Pro app and the support team . Highly recommend! The versatility of iReal ProThere’s no question that there are similar products on the market but the versatility of iReal Pro allows the practitioner of music or the producer the ability to not only create but continue to grow as a technician. I personally have found the app useful in production not being a keyboardist by training. Additionally, it is a great and useful tool to practice new material or theory by soloing over changes or melody as well as having a set list available to distribute to musicians in a band. and of all of the things listed what has not been mentioned is having this in your back pocket when impromptu performing when you don’t know a song you have a roadmap at your fingertips which is incredibly useful and I’ve used dozens of times whether it’s on a professional gig or just sitting in when I did not know the tune. The only drawback to this wonderful app is that it only allows rhythms on the one on the downbeat and nothing on the upbeat. There would be so much more possibility if you could have portal rhythmic phrasing on eighth notes or 16th notes instead of just on quarter notes. This is something that I as well as others perhaps have suggested however for whatever reason it is still not available. Essential for aspiring and professional jazz musicianSolid Playback, compositional accompaniment and practice tool with multiple applications. But doesn’t come with any music but there’s a great form or you could download the court changes to thousands of popular tunes and experiment by changing the styles. It’s like band in a box, and someways more versatile, but with less tweak ability in regards to the accompaniment. If you want to gig and you don’t know key changes, this is the app to have. I’ve seen so many professionals with them. You can also export midi, and whatever style you want. It’s help me to compose new songs. The interface is a little tricky, but there’s plenty of tutorials and helpful for him literature, as well as templates and options. This is probably the most comprehensive tool of its kind, and although there’s no real audio, if you’re not happy with the sounds of styles, export the midi, or if you like what you hear you can export the audio. For example, I found a tune template with some key changes I liked. Tweaked and changed some of the form and chords with ones I was hearing. Changed up the style. Wrote the developers and ask them if they could add an option to record. Not only did they respond, they did. Unbelievable. That was five years ago. There are still regular updates... it and it is absolutely a go to app that is One killer practicing, especiallyif you are a student of jazz, Bluegrass, blues, this will help you gain levels. I even use it on gigs if someone has a song request that is too obscure to find a backing track. It’s all about just getting from Milyer with the controls. Being tasteful and thinking creatively. Performance tracks too!I’ve used this app since the early versions and it always surprises me. First off it let’s me create simple, readable chord charts and share them effortlessly. The backing instruments give you flexibility to easily practice and rehearse. While most of my use of this app is as a practice or teaching tool - I also use it to create basic backing tracks for live performance. I play lap steel - so all I really need is a bass line, and a simple rhythm instrument to back me up as I play the melodies. Once I get a chart working live - if I want better quality for a show etc. I’ll do a more pro track in my DAW with real instruments. But for many songs, doing simple gigs - this app works fine. The endings are not great, and the bass lines get a bit boring - but overall it works ok. If you construct a good chart with proper repeats, and pick a good style for the song etc. - the tracks work really well. I like the Rhodes piano, vibes and bass along with the Jazz styles. The most useful app I've ever hadI've had this app since it was available. It's amazing that it only cost what it does. I not only use it for having jazz charts on gigs, I can create the whole night's set list for my band and text it to all the players minutes, before the show so everyone has all the charts in the right order and in the right keys. There are too many amazing features to discuss here, but what I will discuss is the phenomenal customer service. I usually get a petsonal reeply back within an hour or two with answers, suggestions, and links providing additional material. This has proved to be invaluable in being able to unlock some nifty features. Just make sure you email yourself your stuff to back it up because apple's iCloud back up system can be unreliable with any software. The file storage system that they use is great. One of the greatest practice coachesI have been using this app for several years now. It’s useful for my drum practice, bass practice, vocal practice, songwriting. How one chooses to use this as a practice tool: the sky’s the limit! The online community is amazing. I can have friends come over and I mute their particular instrument along with mine.I am learning bass as my second instrument and this program is invaluable. I can slow down anything to a manageable Tempo so I can explore the chords deeper. I can pick up even esoteric jazz and pop songs with the incredible online community. I do not need to be connected to the Internet to play downloadable songs with this software. I use it to also practice vocal exercises. It also exports charts to PDF which is fantastic if I want to play or share a chart with the actual song audio. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made from my iPhone and iPad. They say Time magazine voted this One of the 50 best inventions of 2010. I say it’s still one of the 50 best inventions for musicians and it’s 2018. Don’t like the “stereo piano” in this edition.Please bring back the piano that you had before this update. The new “stereo piano” sounds distant and not as good. I will re-rate this if you can give us the option to use either piano at the least. I also note that some of the chords or inversions don’t sound quite right sometimes. Perhaps this can be looked into as well? Otherwise, I really enjoy the program. Thank you for the response. Primarily, I’m not really happy with the “embellishment” feature. It seems to over embellish the jazz chords every single time the chord is played, if it was more randomized and had slightly better voice leading I think it would be a nice addition. Perhaps you could make it a sliding scale instead of “on” or “off”. Maybe it’s asking too much. The program is excellent regardless. Great app, initially struggled with family sharingThis is a revised review. Overall, the app is great - see all the other glowing reviews. I’m docking a star because I initially struggled with this app and Apple Family Sharing. The gist is, I thought it wasn’t working, contacted iReal Pro support, who couldn’t help and said try Apple support. After a number of chat sessions, it still didn’t work. So I requested a refund though Apple and wrote and unflattering review regarding the inability to get family sharing to work. Only after all that did a new iReal Pro support person reach out and explain how to do family sharing with the app. I’ve since re-purchased the app and now have it working on multiple devices. Ultimately this is essentially user error on my part. My understanding is that the iReal Pro developers have no control over this functionality (other than to enable it). That said, I do think it’s fair to expect them to have some more familiarity with the user-facing side of what is presumably their biggest platform. The problem I had is that Apple’s interface for family sharing is inconsistent. I have another (unrelated) purchased app. For that one, on any of my other iOS devices, I can go into the App Store and download/install it for free (because it’s already been paid for). However, if I try to do that with iReal Pro, it can’t be downloaded without paying (even though I already paid for it on another device). For iReal Pro, you have to go into the App Store, then into your account, then select apps, and then into the family section. So this is really a ding against Apple, as the family sharing mechanics are demonstrably inconsistent - and in my opinion, not intuitive. When I select the app from the App Store directly, why doesn’t it automatically “know” that I’ve already purchased this app? But I maintain that iReal Pro support should generally have a better understanding of the Apple App Store platform..ConcreteRoosterVersion: 2024.7.1

Best practice tool EVER!I’ve owned iReal Pro since it came out over fifteen years ago. Back then, I used to sneak my iPhone onto my knee to pretend I knew jazz standards when I really had no idea what I was doing. So long as the chords were right and my solos composed of pentatonics and random notes played really fast with some youthful confidence were enough to fool most people. When they introduced the accompaniment and practice features I thought it was a cute idea but never gave it much thought as I considered myself an “advanced” guitarist. This was way before instagram and the eight-year-olds who can play us all under the table so give me a break! About a year and a half ago, I decided to get realistic about my playing and wanted to see if I could “make the changes” using simple seventh arpeggios over “Fly Me To The Moon,” while staying in one position on the neck of my guitar. Needless to say, I ate $&*# almost immediately! Fortunately, the ability to slow the music down, transpose to different keys, and slowly increase speed over a practice session has helped me to develop a far better understanding of the fretboard than the Aebersold play-alongs of my youth ever afforded. Now I can play in all seven positions and make the changes every time. I’m even starting to move diagonally across the fretboard with some confidence that I’ll end up in the same key I started in! IReal Pro is totally awesomeAs a rhythm section player and music teacher, I can say without hesitation that iReal Pro has improved my playing and flexibility. The ability to have the changes to any tune, in any key, instantly, eliminated the need to carry around multiple real books to play casual gigs. The ability to have a play along track for any chart is a game changer in that it allows better practice and to allows one to fuse theory with improvisation. The search function allows access to most common tunes even brand new ones (not always totally correct, but almost always better than nothing). If all else fails, iReal allows us to easily and intuitively make our own charts and share any chart or playlist right there on the gig (as long as there a cell signal) or via email or text beforehand. And its set of features is simply amazing. Imagine having access to a decent sounding rhythm section for well over a thousand tunes, supplied at no additional cost. And EACH tune can be played: 1) Any tempo 2) Any key 3) With a wide variety of chord, bass, and percussion instruments, and YOU adjust how they balance 4) Any number of repeats 5) Wide variety of musical styles As the song plays, the app will highlight the current chord being played. You can even input your own custom songs, and use all of the features above. Output the app’s sound to a speaker or amplifier, and you’re ready to play along with the rhythm section. This is a fantastic app for learning and practicing tunes. You can even use iRealPro to do a solo gig in public when you don’t have access to a live rhythm section. Indespendible !!!!!Man, I’ve never been particularly adept at the tech side of music although we all strive to improve. I admit it, as a composer/player I tend to be impatient! This app serves the purpose of the composer SO WELL. Have a melody and chord changes in my head! Bap! I lay it down, play with grooves, tempos, new harms. and bring the composition to fruition in know time flat! As a pianist, I merely deck the onboard cat and have the most AMAZING tool to craft a composition! Also, by running it around through all keys, newer added ideas seam to materialize! Practice Makes ProgressGreat automatic backing track software similar to Band In A Box without the three hundred dollar price tag. Great features allow control of most musical variables: key, tempo, and backup band instruments. Good sound for practicing along with, possibly good enough for demo’s or live karaoke performance. Wonderful software that has been around a decade or so, with plenty of time to work out any glitches a long time ago. The program provides animated chord charts that follow the beat, but does not provide a melody line in musical notation. I have found sheet music elsewhere online, and the keys usually match the original keys in the written out songs. A perfect practice accompanist for solo instruments. A perfect appI’ve used this app forever. Like most of my adult life, 10+years. I used to play upright bass professionally. This app has got me through hundreds of pick up gigs- you know the type jazz musicians. All you hear is “Hey come play”, and when you show up to the gig they just start calling tunes from 100 years ago like you should have it in your blood. This app let me keep up and sound great with that kind of gig. A quick download and you have changes to a ton of standards at your disposal. Only way this could be better is if it had the melody loaded in. For practice it’s great. The rhythm section can be pretty stale but for working your way through changes at various speeds, 😘👌🏼(chefs kiss). You can alter changes easily. And mixing out instruments is cool, I can practice walking lines. I use it even when writing songs. It’s pretty easy to make a lead sheet off these, including exporting to pdfs in case you need to pass to a friend. It’s great to have a band at your disposal to hear your parts too. There are some good grooves as well. Honestly the best money I’ve spent on an app as a jazz musician, maybe on any music tech stuff. Great AppIt is a great app for sure, practice tool. I suggest to allow to write some rhythm notation very necessary for intros, for example: sometimes you have to play songs you have never played right on the spot, the rhythmic notation will do the miracle. My last suggestion all my students practice with this software but there is room to improve, we need that ireal be compatible with realbooks, again; "a song request we haven't heard", we need to playthe melody. Incredible App, Some downfallsThis app is incredible. Not only am I able to find most songs from the real book and quickly dose load them, if the charts are wrong I can edit the chords or timing or repeats, key or tempo as needed. Not only that, when i couldn't find a song on the forums, I could create the chart as I needed it for any song. Only downfall is that I paid for the app on my mac too, and I can't seem to login on the iphone to transfer my songs to my laptop. Incredible and needed for any jazz musician or genre beyond. In a band you can practice or share these charts so everyone knows how their solo will sound over the music. Great app. When I found I could create charts I was in disbelief. Great practice tool, good support.This tool is a great way to practice, and play the tune in any key. (As a keyboardist, I turn down the keyboard part and practce along from my fake book charts.) I don’t find the editing interface super intuitive, but there is online documentation and their support responds quickly to questions. The jazz list of tunes is pretty comprehensive. I wish there were more vetted rock tunes. (People post their own titles in the forums, but it is “caveat emptor”: some people who post don’t seem to know you can specify a minor key, or have screwy chords. Most recent versions let you preview before you download a song, but older version that runs on older iOS does not. (And that is the helpful tidbit I got from their support staff.) One Of The Best Apps I OwnThis is, hands down, one of the best apps that I own. I have been playing guitar on and off for years, having much difficulty with swallowing. This app is very easy to use and has a ton of bells and whistle‘s. You can easily create a song and then easily transpose it or change the tempo with a couple of simple tabs. It allows me to practice my guitar ring in multiple keys with ease. There are a ton of different styles as well as time signatures that really add to the functionality of this app. Additionally, it seamlessly syncs with my iPhone and my iPad, so I can create a song on one device and it will easily just be there on my other device when I open it up. Guitar practice is so easy with this app!This app has definitely helped me become a better jazz improviser. Most of the jazz songs are already available through the app and inputting a song is incredibly easy. I have a backup band that can play a song in any key, in a variety of styles. And beginners can access chords to learn the songs. I recently had a question about the app and I received a friendly answer within minutes through email support. PLEASE ADD THIS TO THE APPI love this app and have been using it for years and it’s only gotten better and better. Best money I’ve ever spent. The only thing I have wanted for a long time but have yet to see is a loop feature. I’ve always wanted to loop certain sections of a tune to practice specific changes and I’ve had to go and record myself somewhere that I can loop it. It’s just a bit of a hassle and I’d love to be able to loop however many specific bars to practice hard spots with ease. Great as is. Encourage further development.I’m a jazz snob. This app is perfect for me since I am learning jazz piano. It is also very good for composing and even recording a tune with other instruments, PROVIDED, one uses the midi out file transfer. The internal sounds are okay for learning but not good enough to record with. That’s okay because with a midi file player and multi layered sample based apps one can can obtain a very decent recording. I encourage the developer to consider further enhancements such as more comping styles, chord inversions, additional drum fills and practice tunes " in the style of (artist)". IReal Pro, a real winner!I’ve been using iReal Pro for a couple of years now on my solo piano jazz gigs. Solo gigging can be a bit boring and tedious at times, especially when the music your playing is requested to be purely background music at corporate/special events. IReal Pro has given me a bit of spice to my music for the average listener, in addition to working with a metronome type tool, which is always good way to improve your time. I love the ease of downloading tunes and / or creating new tune arrangements with this app! The ease of changing the key is convenient on the fly when needed. Setting up play lists for special events is super handy in addition to having quick access to a singer’s song list that may have “out of the ordinary” keys. Ten Star App!I've been using iReal Pro since the beginning... and it keeps getting better and better! Besides being a great practice aid for my trumpet, it has helped me understand song form, and how to write it. Then it helped me learn the bass guitar, and now I'm able to teach basic guitar and piano to young students. In a pinch, it is a great backup band for live performance! I recommend this app, by name, to every musician I encounter, and am proud to give it the highest rating available! Great, but...I have been using this app for years now and I do love it. I think there’s room for a few vital adjustments tho... one in particular that I would really like to see fixed. When a song is transposed and I want to edit chord changes, as soon as it goes into edit mode, it shows the chords in the original key the song was inputted, rather than the key I’m currently working with. This can be very frustrating in the moment for trying to make quick adjustments as I have to constantly transpose in my head to make edits. A great app with one flaw.This is an essential app for students and professional musicians. And not only allows you to play nearly any tune in different styles and tempos and keys, but it is also handy for writing simple chord charts. The one real problem it’s with the chart writing function. It is not possible in this program to indicate anticipated chords, which is essential in notating popular music. If this function were improved I would give the app five stars. Fantastic for Jazz bad for PopThis app is incredible. I play Jazz so this is perfect for having chord charts, making practice exercises, and a whole lot more! I feel like the add on for pop and blues is pointless though, other then having a chord chart all the tunes need a melody to even sound close to the original music. I feel like working with an actual metronome would be more useful to a beginner player. Amazing app - one glitch needs fixed, though.One little problem - if you set the chord diagrams to “off” they don’t go away like intuition leads you to think. You have to switch back to one of the instruments (guitar, piano, bass) and make sure it’s switched it off there or they won’t go away even if you select “off”. I thought it was broken but it’s just a broken bit of programming. That’s the work around, though. Please fix this, team. If I switch to off, it should turn off. Thank you! Love the app so much! I love it!! What a bargain!I’ve spent countless hours joyfully singing with this app. I’ve also been able to set keys that fit my voice like a glove. This used to be a very awkward process with a pianist, because finding the perfect key can be very time consuming. Well, it is for me. I can also email a set list and charts for upcoming gigs. The Best. Nothing else like it.Everything you need in a practice/ jam session tool. No need to schlep bulky real books. No lead sheets, owing to copyright laws, but that’s where your solid ear-training comes in. Change keys at flick of a button & generate printable chord charts that can be emailed to others. Technical support is quickly provided by knowledgeable, actual humans. Pretty goodThe app is fine but may bug out on you. Often it insists that I have the bars arranged incorrectly even when I have them in the proper format, which is irritating when I’m trying to get a certain harmonic rhythm. Aside from this the language the app uses for displaying chords is not very user friendly. I try to understand what info they provide but I’m still yet to understand how I would go about getting certain voicings like augmented 6th and chords without the 5th. Newest updateLove the App. My husband and a bunch of other “seniors” formed a oldies rock and roll band. My husband downloaded the his app and used their music plus added some of his old.. they updated it he app and his old, senior, iPad could not use the updated version. He only had a week to go before their first big paying job!! I contacted IReel Pro and within hours Warren contacted us and told my husband how to log back on with the new version. Awesome on so many levelsI’ve been using this for many years through many upgraded versions. I just keeps getting better! Especially when I cannot jam with my fellow jazz musicians, this app keeps me practicing and improvising so I can feel comfortable when our jazz jam gets together. I play tenor sax as my main instrument, but also play guitar and piano. I absolutely love the chord scale diagrams! And the various styles, plus the full control of the beat speed. My most used app!This app does just about everything for me. It's a great practice tool, with ever more styles to play against. And I also use it as my gig book. Just bought the new Blues style pack and ran into problems installing. The support was amazingly fast and diligent. In the process I learned the program has features like looping and start from any measure. Also copy and paste. Great app especially for transposersIReal Pro is probably the iPhone/iPad app I use more than any other. As a music practice tool, it’s just fantastic. Awesome appBought this app after seeing a few tutorials about using it to export midi data over to iOS Garageband. No Melody LineTen years ago, I was playing gigs with a young jazz singer and his friends, a drummer, bassist, and a trumpeter. Can’t practice without iRealProI’m 4 years into committed practice of jazz bass guitar, and I truly don’t see how I could pursue this path without my iReal Pro. Just one thing to say...I love this app and use it all the time for both playing along with music or writing music. My only problem is that this app doesn't have the ability to change the style mid-song. Therefore, songs like A Night in Tunisia, in which the groove changes from Latin to Swing and back, is left Latin throughout. Great app.It has been invaluable for my practice. Nothing negative to say; I’ll come back and give it 5 stars when they add the ability to transpose songs to every key, including enharmonic keys. As of right now, I have to edit tracks manually if I want to be able to practice them in both sharp and flat keys. If I want to play songs written in Ab in a sharp key, such as C#, I have to rewrite any chords that have flats and make them sharps—and I have to do it for every sharp key. Lacking many chords and grooves/customizability.Some chords that seem obvious, like min11b5 or 6/9#11 are non-existent. Also many songs have a groove change in the middle of the form or after an intro; Why they have not added this customization option yet baffles me. Another type of customization that many including myself would like to see is the option to customize tempo modulations. If we can change the time signature, why can't we modulate tempo, ie: double-time swing at B or dotted 8th = quarter note. Another thing is the amount of editing space is extremely limiting in arrangements and you cannot write out long forms for absolutely no logical reason. Why??? Also more open grooves are lacking (for example straight ECM, or less overt latin grooves). If Ireal Devs manage to fix even two of these problems then I will change my rating to reflect the improvement of their app, but until then, I would recommend using another backing track app. I have updated this review to reflect the addition of more chords (some I used to have in this review) and have added a star for their effort and listening to feedback. An amazing tool!This is a fantastic app. I use it for myself as a practice aid but I also use it as a teaching tool in my high school jazz band classes. Useful but patheticThis app was a great idea when is appeared about 15 years ago. But unfortunately the tool has not substantially evolved since it’s initial release. No functionality of any significance has been added. It still has the same primitive interface, with the same minuscule array of editing and annotation options. The whole premise of the app is ‘keep it simple’. Fine - I’m down with that. Its very limited capabilities are indeed extremely useful, for one simple reason: Everybody else uses it, so you have to as well. Because the app is in very many respects profoundly weak to the point of being truly laughable, I feel sure that if and when a better option comes along (I.e. another tool offering similar functionality but done much better) large numbers of users including me will quite rightly abandon iReal. Basically the guys that wrote this have made their money, and are continuing to do so with ongoing sales of the product. There is no real competition (yet) and thus no incentive to radically rethink the tool, or add significant new functionality. They have not earned a whole lot of respect from real software engineers, or from legions of disappointed users who need many improvements that never arrive. Positives: In certain contexts, like for example if you are a rhythm section player and are called upon to play an unfamiliar song, then it’s worth its weight in gold. It’s a useful practice tool - you can play along using the playback functionality, which in the background generates and executes a midi sequence based on the chords, tempo, style etc that you select. So far so good. However… - Editing capabilities are primitive and extremely limited - Playback sequences (not to mention the very weak array of styles) range from just ok to truly atrocious..Brandito_1967Version: 2023.2

Chords don’t play properly as writtenIn one measure a chord will play as a block chord. And in the next measure that same chord may play as an inversion or arpeggio or as an inversion.
