The first and only Vector Magnetometer on the iPhone - Visualize the hidden world of magnetism around you in 3 dimensions (3GS or later!)! It can be perfectly used to explore and measure the direction and strength of the magnetic field of random objects around you (which can be quite fascinating!). With limitations (see docs) it can be used as a metal detector to find electric lines or pipes in walls (always good to check a wall before drilling in, at least better with this than not to check at all). Another application is to use this tool as a rough estimate of your north-south position on earth without using the GPS(!) - just by measuring the local earth magnetic declination (it works fine even while flying in a plane to check how the declination changes). Or simply explore your next Christmas present before opening it! Send us your results!
The application has four different displays modes to visualize the magnetic field:
- Absolute Mode: Displays the absolute magnetic field in microtesla (μT) measured by the magnetometer.
- North Mode: A compass head-up displays the geographic north along with the pointer that directs to the magnetic north (thus display difference magnetic to geographic north).
- Declination Mode: Two arrows will be displayed to indicate the declination of the earth magnetic field (0° just on equator, increasing to north with blue pointer direction up or south with blue pointer direction down).
- Relative Mode: This mode shows the relative strength (absolute minus compensation vector) of the magnetic field in μT.
… and five different display modes for acceleration visualization:
- Absolute Mode: Displays the reverse acceleration of the iPhone (1g up when hold steady).
- X-Rotation - Y-Rotation - Z-Rotation: The arrow will display the rotation around the X-, Y- and Z-Axis of the iPhone. The digital indicator shows the angle numerically (-180° - +180°). A way to calibrate will be added with one of the next updates, so you could use this as a level.
- Relative Mode: This mode shows the relative strength (absolute minus compensation vector) of the acceleration.

For recreational use only. However it CAN (!) be very accurate. The measurement is performed as good as possible (we try our best) by using the inbuilt accelerometer and magnetometer to their limits. The range of the accelerometer typically has a max of ±3g (~4.2g displayed here if combined) and each magnetometer usually recalibrates internally when over ±120μT in one axis. However, tell us your experience!
MagnetMeter App Comments & Reviews
MagnetMeter Positive Reviews
I Need This!Just when I thought I had everything. Definitely a cool app with a multitude of uses. Nice Interface good online manual and works exactly as advertised..Version: 1.6
Vice niceThis is an excellent app, doing everything that is advertised. The arrows give a clear view of the direction of the magnetic field and the acceleration. They are a lot easier to visualize with this than by looking at the raw sensor numbers. I especially like the magnetic declination view. This is useful for learning about magnetism as well as seeing what kinds of fields are emitted by various devices around the house..Version: 1.2
Responsive and preciseIf you wanted a tricorder, get this app. The arrow reflects magnetic flux very quickly and shows the field strength in real time. It's 99 cents and does a fantastic job of representing 3d magnetic fields. The new version has the compass overlay working correctly. I've bought only a handful of apps and this is one. It's a very impressive app to anyone who is science minded..Version: 0
Very cool magnetometerWorks great. Can't understand why people have to give it a bad rating because they have the wrong device! Fun for exploring grav/mag and impressing Geophysicists at parties. Wish it had labels for the modes, why should any one have to remember, guess or worse yet stop the app and go to the home page to to figure that out?.Version: 0
Works perfectWorks exactly as described. People need to read and stop rating it one star because they don't have a 3gs. My phones magnometer usually resets around 140, so not for strong magnets. Occasionally the reading will spazz and get stuck, but I just reset it (yellow button in relative mode). If you have a 3gs this is a very cool app!.Version: 0
Gaussian aroundThis app is quite sensitive and visually impressive. I've been measuring Gauss units from my various devices, iPod Touch, iPad, Kindle, etc. I'm wondering what impact, if any, those fields have on me? For example, do those devices near my head contribute to insomnia or other possible health issues? Useful app! Very interesting..Version: 1.4
High gadget factorI'm not sure how this app could look any cooler than it does. It really helps you visualize the invisible forces acting on the iPhones sensors. This must be what evil geniuses play with when they aren't trying to kill James Bond. All I need now is a monocle and a white Persian cat..Version: 1.4
FUNdamentalThere needs to be more apps like this! (Apps that use APIs to give you fundamental information of the world around you) This allows you to view the direction and intensity of the magnetic field around you..Version: 1.4
Actually worksWorks well on iPhone 4! Tried it with a magnet and the speakers for the magnetic setting, then tried the accelerometer which also works..Version: 0
This is greatUsing all features to an advantage on the 3gs, keep it up and we can see the full potential from this device!.Version: 0
Great appWork well on my 4S. I would suggest not getting strong magnets near the phone. It will not hurt the electronics, but it could make the phone frame slightly magnetic and interfere with the compass..Version: 1.4
Very awesomeThis app is so cool. I use it all the time when I'm messing around in my yard. I can usually always find some rocks that are magnetic or a random piece of metal. Very fun to use..Version: 1.5
Interesting, scientific, and funThis app reveals the otherwise invisible local magnetic field with a full 3D vector indicator and several selectable modes of operation. Really fun to experiment with. Nicely done!.Version: 0
Works good....I would normally give it 4 stars, but I gave it 5 to offset the complainers why can't read!.Version: 0
Doesn't work for me :(I guess my iPod doesn't have the right hardware. I bet it would have been cool if it did work for me though..Version: 0
Super Awesome MagnetometerVery good app. Impressive 3 dimensional magnetometer read out. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this is and seems to be quite accurate and sensitive. Well done..Version: 1.5
Great, but could use a few more features.I love the 3D visualization of the sensors. It would be cool if it included the gyro data as well as logging. It could be useful for science experiments..Version: 1.4
Coolest app everWorks exactly as described. Anybody with any scientific interest or leaning should spend a dollar and get this thing!.Version: 0
Needs logging feature...otherwise this app is great!.Version: 0
Funny little timewasterI only got this literally 45 secs ago, I haven't played around with it but it would be a good gag app.Version: 0
Very NiceThis app is dynamite. Very educational about the physical world. After turning off "Screen Rotation" the screen will nevertheless rotate once before locking..Version: 1.4
Potential. It has potential. Provides some neat info from the iPhone's sensors. Fun to play with..Version: 0
Very cool and almost to futuristic love it!Great app I could measure the magnetic field of my new rewound coil on my older outboard engine 👍😁.Version: 1.2
Great fun...Working better but still a little wonkie at times..Version: 1.4
It looks cool! But im 14 i have no use on it... Buts it works.Version: 0
Looks GoodI got it because I have always been interested in magnetics..Version: 1.4
AwsomeGreat product.Version: 1.4
Great app for techies!Works as stated. Great app!.Version: 0
Awesome appI love this app.Version: 1.5
FunFun to play with it!.Version: 0
AwesomeWorks better than I expected. People have no clue what they are talking about . . . "encouraging people to put magnets around electronics". All electronic devices with a current (ie on) produce an EM field. Learn some physics folks. This is a really cool app..Version: 1.1.1
MrGood magnetometer.Version: 1.5
Great app....helped my doctor find mag fields in her officeGreat app.Version: 1.1.1
Can not calibrateOn the iPad Pro the magnetic north is always wrong. The app provides no way to force a calibration..Version: 1.6
FantasticHad this one back when I still had a 3GS I believe, loved it then and love'n it now..Version: 1.5
I like it, but...I really liked this app when I first got it, back during iOS 4.1. It worked really well and I couldn't stop playing with it. But after I updated to iOS 4.2, it just doesn't seem to operate quite the same. It can still measure fields, but its responsiveness seems diminished. This is most likely no fault of the creators since it was the iOS update that did it, but I would like it if it could be as good as when I first bought it again..Version: 1.1.1
