ASL Dictionary App Comments & Reviews

ASL Dictionary Positive Reviews

Very helpful in learning ASL vocabularyThis app has been an important tool to help me learn ASL over the last 7 years. It doesn’t have all the signs I want, but as I don’t have fluent ASL speakers around very often, it is a good source for new signs and to help me remember some I once knew. I’m a Dad with 2 deaf children who have cochlear implants. They are mostly oral and in mainstream school, but we want to be bilingual as much as possible. This app is a key tool..Version: 4.1

Needs UpdatingThis is a great app and one of the few of it's kind. I like this app because of how many signs are provided, but some signs are either outdated or incorrect. One that i know is incorrect are the signs for "Missouri" and "Montana", they're actually backwards (Missouri is M-O, and Montana is that sign that's listed as the one for Missouri). It would be nice if the signs could be corrected or updated, maybe even include different ways of signing them since there are often regional differences in signs..Version: 4.1

Use at work all the time! This app helps me fill in the many large gaps in my ASL vocabulary. I use it almost daily with young children who receive speech/language services and their parents. I’ve referred many parents and other professionals to the app, as well!.Version: 5.2

Love it!Yes I love it, and it is very easy to use. It has lots of words which are easy to find alphabetically. Because I am deaf on one side and heard of hearing in the other, I am learning ASL. The ASL Dictionary is very useful and I highly recommend it especially for ASL learners. It is now two years later and I still love this app..Version: 4.1

Solid App for the Price; Hopefully to ImproveA good app. One major thing for me is that it doesn't explain similar signs—how they differ, or if they ARE the same and one can figure it out by context. For example I just looked up “day in and day out (everyday)” and it looks like another sign I’ve seen. Unfortunately I’m worried about doing it wrong. No one is here to help me move fwd..Version: 4.5

Awesome appThis app works perfectly for what I want. I just wish it could send me a word of the day or week or some notifications to remind me to practice. Other than that this app has almost every word I have needed in one way or another..Version: 4.5

Pretty goodSome of them don’t seem right and I don’t have someone who I can ask because im not around deaf or fluent asl people also she doesn’t have any facial expression which bothers me a lot. And there should be notes on some where it can mean different things depending on the face. Just a thought but it’s pretty good.Version: 4.8

This app helps! My granddaughter lives with us and is deaf. We use it everyday for past 5 years or so. I wish the photo of the interpreter was bigger or a written explanation of the sign and where it comes from (memory aid) was included..Version: 4.1

Well executedMy wife and I love this app. We have been using it for several years now on the iPhone and the Dev Team keeps updating this app to keep it stable and working efficiently on every new iOS upgrade and new iPhones. Thank you! The UI is very simple and so user friendly; the videos are clear and effective. I like the slow motion feature. Only one suggestion: Please allow user to bookmark different signs as favorites or into different user created folders..Version: 4.8

Wonderful and usefulI recently started a job with a coworker who is deaf. The whole crew is really cool about learning ASL and this tool has been great. I only wish there was an option to save signs to flash cards or a shortlist to study them more easily when you have specific words to learn..Version: 4.2

Great app for beginnersSeveral of the signs are outdated but people will still understand you! Wish there were even more words, but all in all this app is very easy to use and helpful for beginners!.Version: 4.0

First Time UserI’m currently attempting to learn ASL, i found this app to be perfect. The app has a play loop but the best part of it, there is a slow option to see the clip and even play the clip in a slow loop. I highly recommend it!.Version: 4.1

Very helpful with deaf brother in lawThis app has an extensive dictionary and the loop feature is very helpful. I use this all the time and recommend it highly..Version: 4.1

Great app!Overall really great app! Has basically all words I need in the moment. Very accurate, although it could use a bit of an update on some words. The app design is also old, but it does everything I need it to do..Version: 4.5

Great AppI like this app, because every time I needed it, it was great to do a Quick reference. One thing that I wish they had on here is where you can type in something you like to say and then it would play it back..Version: 4.5

A work in progressWhen I first got this app some of the signs were incorrect. Upon contacting the developers they corrected the issues. I appreciate their willingness to help people with deaf children like myself that depend upon resources like this one..Version: 4.2

ASL appThis has helped me so many times when having trouble remembering the sign so I have this to fall back on.Version: 4.1

New Update for KoreaReason why I give 3 stars cause some of Sign Language is error and need to update new sign language. Like Korea that you sign language was insulting to their language. You need get updates for Korea their sign language for Korea. By the way I’m deaf!.Version: 4.5

Great Easy App!Easy to use would give a 5* if included popular phrases, but as a newly deaf person it has helped me more than I could say!.Version: 5.2

Great resourceI end up using this quite often. Great range of vocabulary, clear videos..Version: 4.1

I love this appIt's quick, precise, and altogether a great access tool for learning how to sign however, there are many signs it does not have that others do..Version: 4.1

Can I please get a refund? Can I please get a refund I’m not used to ASL and it got boring to me I want to give 5 stars but I have to give a 3 because I’m being honest about how I feel when you get a chance can I please get a refund?.Version: 4.2

Awesome!Being able to communicate with the deaf persons at my job has changed the team dynamics tremendously!.Version: 4.0

The cool is sign languageThis amazing hard for me sign language thank you for help sign language 👑👑.Version: 4.1

Very good on i-phone and I-padVery good but on occasion it gets "stuck" and the sign I need does not come up..Version: 4.0

Best ASLEasy to find words I need. Thank you !.Version: 4.1

Not super helpfulAs many other people have said, these signs are either outdated or incorrect. My friend who speaks fluently in asl had no clue what I was saying..Version: 4.2

Best ASL app EVER!!Most complete, clear, many options, intuitive yup!!!!.Version: 4.1

Very helpful!!!Thank you for amazing app!!!.Version: 4.0

Love this app! This app is the best app ever!!!.Version: 4.0

❤️ ❤️ ❤️😍.Version: 4.0

Great AppThis is an excellent tool for on the go if you need to check on a sign. The other reviewer obviously forgot that signs are regional and what is typical for a sign in one region is not the same in all. Religious signs differ among religions so insisting a sign for Bible is Jesus Book is correct for many religions but there are others that use Holy Book instead, so dont think this app is wrong because signs differ from whatever region you are from. When in doubt, ask a Deaf person for what they use in a particular region. I have seen very different signs for many things due to this. I find the average ASL dictionary, including the one from Gaulledet will have signs that differ from what the Deaf use in my area. Would like to see an app that uses pictures for kids to learn sign that dont read yet, hint hint..... I have a Deaf son so I this app is very useful for me when i forget a sign..Version: 0

I like this app, but ...I like this app. Shows different uses for for the same word, shows many idioms, and common phrases, and putting a looping feature was great improvement. However, ever since the last update, that loop feature stopped working! Would appreciate it of anyone would tell me how to fix it! Thanks. Thanks so much for fixing the loop feature! I really enjoy this app. I like how they have many different uses for a word. How about the word settle? Settle down and be quiet, settle in this area meaning lived there, the salt will settle to the bottom. This word is spelled the same, sounds the same, but has different meanings or concepts so there is a different sign for each concept. Example sentences would be cool for this app. Thanks so much for all the work you do. :).Version: 2.8

Great featuresWhat a great app! The loop feature combined with the ability to swipe makes it easy to go through and add to my knowledge of signs. I wish it had a feature where you could translate and type in words and have it put together with several signs so that I didn't have to hunt for them all. It would also be awesome to just have a search feature to type to go to one sign rather than having to scroll alphabetically. But besides my wishes for additional features this is the best ASL app I have tried and it's certainly worth the time of anyone trying to learn ASL..Version: 2.11

Fantastic and Killer Tech Support TeamI've used this app daily for about a month and could not be happier with the ease of navigation and the simple commands available for each video. I've purchased another of the teams apps, "ASLT" which acts as a great resource for personal learning. Although, the "T" stands for translator, it should not be misused as a replacement for a real translator. The app uses the same images from this dictionary and splices them together for viewing based upon what you type. The Tech Support team is extremely prompt and had my problem with missing videos solved in an instant. Thank you..Version: 2.11

Clear and confident. This is the best video dictionary in the App Store. ASL is a living language and there are always differences regionally of how things are signed, but after showing this to many deaf friends from all over the USA, they all universally seemed pretty impressed with it. This has given me confidence to use new signs I have learned from the App in real life situations. The list of words in the dictionary is a nice base vocabulary. I like the loop function to repeat signs, and I feel they are demonstrated clearly. If they expanded it to include some common phrases and basic conversation, I think that would be amazing..Version: 2.10

Not bad, but one major annoyanceVery comprehensive dictionary, nice search feature, and the price is right. But there is one major annoyance: the signs are all videos (as opposed to some other ASL apps that use animations) so it takes a second or two for each sign to load. To save space the videos are cropped very short. And they only play once before returning immediately to the dictionary. So if you want to watch the video again (which you almost always do because of how fast they go) you have to wait for it to load again. Hopefully they'll fix this in the next release..Version: 0

Good response to break-fix requestAfter a recent upgrade, app crashed in my iPhone IOS 6. I emailed support not expecting much. They replied right away, gathered more information, and promised a fix. New upgrade was out in about a week and it fixed the crash issue as promised. I also got a follow-up email from tech support to let me know that the upgrade was available (I had already downloaded it, but appreciated the email nonetheless). Better response to a bug report than I've seen from a lot of apps. All seems to be working as expected now..Version: 2.5

I've been waiting for this! Yay!I had retired myself to huge memory-sucking sign language apps for the iPhone and iPad, and then this comes along and completely changes everything. I love it. I haven't used it very much yet, but I love what I have seen so far. And I LOVE that it takes up very little memory but offers so many words. I guess my only wish would be the ability to put in a sentence and have the signs all line up and show themselves to me. But, that may be asking too much, so I'll take what I can get and be happy..Version: 1.7

Word database is correct and exhaustive!Just wanted to correct the one reviewer who said the numbers are "wrong." They aren't. Numbers 1-10 are signed with the palm facing away from the body. 11-14 are signed with the palm toward the body. I usually use comm-tech msu's online dictionary but the flash still won't play on iProducts so this app is an excellent pocket, easily accessible, version. As a "hearie" I am slightly annoyed my music is stopped when I open the app but other than that I am satisfied with the purchase! Overall this is worth every penny. Two thumbs way, way up!.Version: 2.2

So amazingIt's so amazing how helpful this app is, you just punch in what word you need help signing and it instantly shows you a video of how to sign it. It's all in the palm of your hand. If you want to or have to like we do it's an amazing tool/app to have! Just as a hint to mamas with babies who are teaching they have baby signing apps too and my son loves to watch the babies it's not the signing dictionary for babies it's called baby sign and baby sign and sing! I hope everyone gets as much help out of the signing dictionary as my family has!.Version: 2.11

Great word listWide selection of words with mostly the most common variation of the sign. I keep my data on for it and it uses next to nothing. I use it daily, and find it to be a great reference, often in combination with another signs-dictionary app. Definitely worth it..Version: 2.11

Good dictionaryJust purchased this and seems to have a good amount of words. I'm disappointed in the fact that there is no sound. I have a daughter who cannot speak but can hear. Sounds would help as we are still working on reading words. There could be an option to turn on/off sound..Version: 4.1

Good appVery satisfied with this app, strong list of words, but would be nice if they were updated and added to more often. Also not a fan of this woman moving her lips with each word she signs but overall helpful app..Version: 2.11

Very impressedEasy to use, very clear, lots of content. My favourite dictionary to use. 👌🏼.Version: 2.10

Good list of words but that's it.Thought when it said cache videos, you could pick what video clips to save (making a playlist of sorts) but it's just any video you view gets saved. Also if you're offline, it still shows all words but will only let you watch previously watched/cached videos so if you dont remember what ones youve viewed you have to sift through all words.. Should have a favourites or playlist or even flash card option... Something along those lines. But is a large collection of words and videos are easy to follow..Version: 2.11

Great and HelpfulLove this app. Easy to navigate, informative and expressive..Version: 2.10

TyTy for this awesome dictionary to learn signs. Love it..Version: 2.8

Excellent toolGreat for catching up on my ASL. Very handy..Version: 2.8

GREATI got this app worried i would spend money and not get what i wanted. Ended up loving the product, also how i can cache the videos i have seen so i don't always need wi-fi..Version: 2.0

Nicely doneLarge number of words with the ability to slow the playback, & to loop the playback to repeat constantly. Unfortunately some of the videos seem to stop early, and the loop option works inconsistently..Version: 1.8

Not for beginnersReally good expansive dictionary but the videos start and play too fast and you can't slow them or start them over. Maybe good for those already familiar with ASL for reminders but too fast for beginners..Version: 0
