Fog of World App Comments & Reviews
Fog of World Positive Reviews
Great app that could some new featuresThis app has been around for years (I’ve been using it since 2017,) and the fact that it still works on modern OSes and models is a minor miracle and justifies it’s relatively high price tag. This app is great—it inspires me to go down streets I’ve never been in my hometown, travel via new methods, and when visiting a new place, helps me stay pleasantly lost, rather than hopelessly so. That said, its feature set hasn’t really changed in all those years, and given that this app is now a decade old, I think some new features would be warranted. Chiefly, I think there needs to be some “re-fog” option (say, at 5-10 years, or even an adjustable setting with the time frame of your choice) so you can see where you have been at one time, but not recently. Cities especially are constantly changing and I don’t think an area should always indefinitely look like it’s been explored—I don’t really want to impact my explored stats, mind you, but I do want to see where I haven’t been in a while (maybe implement it as an optional layer or onion-skinning feature, or a heat map view—the competing app World Uncovered has a feature to show how often you visit places, so that might be another way of doing it, although if you mostly track for new spots it would be of limited utility versus a fading mechanism.).Version: 2.5.7
Great app - fantastic for exploration! Please read the entire review! This app is great and one-of-a-kind: any similar apps in terms if tracking require a subscription fee that is simply not worth it. Yes, a $30 price is expensive at first, but it is absolutely worth it. As someone who travels VERY often, it’s so cool to be able to see everywhere I visit. I’ve been using the app for 6 months now, and can speak on its functionality. I would say the cons are as follows: phone battery drain will be noticeable (I lose ~10% through FOW on a 14 Pro Max), if you forget to load the app every once in a while tracking will stop, and it is difficult to remove unwanted tracks. However, it needs to be taken into account that this app is 15 years old (meaning it has a history and is unlikely to be deleted). Furthermore, there are external websites and tools to delete unwanted lines (or add if you want). At the end of the day, it comes down to this: if you are interested in seeing your map fill up, it’s worth it. Whenever I go for a drive, boat ride, or hike, I am always conscious of not only tracking potentially new lines, but exploring new places and seeing new sights! If you have $30 to spend, it’s better than any game you will ever play as an adult!.Version: 3.6.4
Simple and funI downloaded this app the day I moved to New York City about a year ago. It’s fascinating to see how much of the city I’ve explored, and it’s fun to level up by “un-fogging” more. It makes you truly realize how much - and how little - you’ve explored of this big world of ours. I always had an adventurous spirit and like to spend my days off exploring, and this app helps me by showing me places I still haven’t been to so I’m not aimlessly hopping on a train and somehow finding myself surrounded by the same familiar sights as any creature of habit would. I find myself leaving the house more and just walking the streets in places I never would have known about Unless this app didn’t subtly bring to my attention that I’d never been THERE before. I even find myself taking the scenic route home from work just because I haven’t unforced that one block a quarter mile away. I’m walking more just to make sure I don’t lose signal in the tunnels of the MTA, and I’m seeing sides of this city I never even knew existed. After one year, a few trips to Virginia, and a couple road trips to the mid-west, I’m just over level 100 and it feels like a cool accomplishment. And I haven’t even left the US with this app yet! And the best part is that all your fog data is saved to iCloud, so when I upgraded to the new Xs Max I didn’t have to start all over, I just picked up right where I left off. This App is fabulous in every way I can imagine. It’s so perfectly executed, and does exactly what you’d want it to do and then some. I recommend it to everyone, especially those who travel a lot and want to keep track of all the places they’ve been. I hardly ever write reviews but this is an exception because I think everyone should have this app and it’s worth every single penny I payed for it. Please, do yourself a favor and download this as soon as you can. You really won’t regret it!.Version: 2.1.33
Amazing App, A Few Additions Needed!I love this app and have been addicted for the past few months. I’ve been using programs on my computer to add past trips and it’s so much fun. I would love if a few more features were added, including regions of countries! For instance, I’d love to be able to see my explored area in square kilometers and percentage traveled in each of the 50 US states, Canadian provinces, Australian territories, etc. A bit more detailed information about there you’ve been would be great, including a way to view a list of your top countries ranked from most-visited to least-visited, maybe a list of the cities you’ve traveled to (if you made it within city boundaries on the map, it would count on your list), and maybe an additional page on the app that has a general checklist of popular sights/attractions around the world - if you visit one, it would check off on your list. I also would really appreciate a way to erase areas of your map - like an eraser tool or something. Many times I’m traveling and the GPS messes up and it’s very annoying having to import my tracks to my computer to fix them. More ways to fix/edit tracks would be awesome!! All in all, an amazing app and I will continue using it for many years to come!!!.Version: 3.6.12
Pretty good app that needs some QOL changes.App works how you expect. There is fog all around you. Move around and uncover it like an old video game. It stays uncovered. Love it. However. A few things I think would not only be easy to implement, but would also increase the QOL greatly. - let user make pins wherever they happen to be, and attach notes/pictures to it. Even if it was as simple as a note/picture attached to a user manually dropped pin at a location. Would be huge. - no reason I can see for orientation to be locked to north I think. Would like to see the pin, your icon while you’re moving, be going and facing the same direction in the app as you are in real life. Like almost all other map applications do. - I think it would be very easy to implement a way to organize and sort your trips by date, or organize and sort them at the very least via when you turned on and off the tracking. Meaning I wanna see not only my entire map, but have the option to see what I drove, say, yesterday, stand out from the rest of the tracking data. Other than those small issues. It’s a great fun app and I think what you can get out of it justifies the price tag if you are the type of person to consistently use it. However, I also think to do to that price tag, that users should have a decent say in what goes on in the app. I e, I would like to hear back about my suggestions! Thanks for reading!.Version: 3.6.14
My Favorite AppI downloaded this only about two months ago and I have to say, this has quickly become my favorite app. The relatively high price tag on the app is entirely worth it without a second thought. The app makes it worth it to find an alternate route to a place you drive all the time, or makes it worth it to just take a quick drive down a street in your city you never explored, and even makes it even more worth it to travel to a new place you’ve never been before. I think the next big steps in this app are definitely in the form of adding more information in regards to specific territories within countries, i.e. being able to check the percentage of exploration in a US state or Canadian province. Incredible app and worth every penny..Version: 3.6.13
Gets stuck, crashes and drains batteryGets stuck in background. v2.5.2 did not fix the issue. It still gets stuck when going to the foreground or opening. It ends up crashing. Battery draining. I used to have the app with location always enabled. No issues. After the last several updates, the app drains my battery. Checking the hourly battery consumption at night, it is the only app that consumes enough not to be negligible: around 7% per hour, in flight mode and no apps in background. That is with a new iPhone 12 Pro, last version of iOS and battery health at 100%. Changed to location only when in use. That helps but, of course, only records whn on the foreground. It was 5 star app for me before all this.Version: 2.5.2
Great but missing a few key featuresI have been waiting for something like this for years. Excellent app. What’s missing: ability to export, so I could view/edit the content in google maps or elsewhere; ability to edit, so I could view with and without my road trips and flights, etc. Or manually distinguish or auto-detect car, plane etc so that those can be viewed as separate maps, to separate places I’ve “really been” from those I’ve driven through or flown over. Or ability to manually draw places I know I’ve been. You may think that cheats the gamification, but remember, this is just for me - and it’s missing everywhere I went before 2018! And I’d like to fix that if I can..Version: 2.2.20
Love this appBeen using this app daily for about 5 years now for all of my travels as well as daily outings. I treat it like a game and use it to challenge myself to walk down a road I’ve never been on, travel to a different part of a city that I may not have thought of before, or find my way back from a hike. The amazing part is you feel like you’ve already seen so much but when you look at the world percentage that you’ve actually visited or the countries that you haven’t been to you realize there’s so much more to see. In the beginning it really sucked the life out of your battery but the latest version seems to not be so bad. If you enjoy traveling and seeing new areas get this..Version: 2.1.10
Like video game fog in open world gamesLove this app. Reminds me of video game fog and when you go somewhere new the place is unknown. You fill in the blanks as you go. The app hardly crashes, if I leave it open for a couple of days it will I imagine it’s handled too many Resource or some various reason. Anyways love this app and have been using it for about 6 years now. Currently in the level 180 range and have been to multiple states with it. Can’t fly commercially with, trust me I’ve tried, even with the WiFi on them. Just a tip to save your phones battery life. Also, I almost always you is in battery saver mode. It’s pretty accurate at this state and the app doesn’t become a little vampire during the day..Version: 2.2.15
Best app everI've had this app for approx 6 years - unfortunately long after my most active travel years. But even then I have been able to upload GPS files to unfog places I have tracked myself (ie runs). This app encourages me to see places I never would have gone out of my way to see (random side streets) otherwise. In doing so I have discovered so many places I might not otherwise discover! The only "down side" to this app is it can very quickly turn a short trip / run to the store into an all day adventure when you realize there's a street 10 min out of the way you haven't gotten 😂 Highly recommend for any adventurer.Version: 2.5.3
A love LetterI’ve had Fog of World for over 10 years and it’s followed me through multiple phone changes, several partners, and many life changes. Anyone that knows me knows about Fog. On the more technical side, the program has always been solid, reliable, and able to handle anything thrown at it (yes I track flights and just need to sit in the window seat). If you just look at the price at face value it doesn’t make sense, but going on over a decade having this app on my home screen, not even social media has gotten that privilege. Long live Fog of World!.Version: 3.7.3
Wish I had purchased 200,000 miles sooner but could be better. While the app is fundamentally great and I don’t regret purchasing it I feel a couple basic things could be done to improve it significantly to stir up more interest and promote more use from those who already own it. 1. Heat map. Instead of just clearing fog it’d be nice if the app incentivized using it when you know you won’t be traveling on new roads by changing the color of roads dependent on how many times you have traced over the same line. This would show the places that were most important to you throughout your time using this app. 2. It’d be nice if larger countries such as the US were divided into states. The passport isn’t very interesting to look into for people who generally stay within the US but may visit several states a week simply because there’s only one number to look at and the discovered percentage is so low due to the size of the US that it’s nearly impossible to appreciate even after hundreds of thousands of miles logged. 3. An ability to erase lines drawn in error due to faulty gps signals..Version: 2.2.17
Love this appBeen using it for years and love being able to see the places I’ve been. It helps me remember my travels when I look back over my maps. I have had one small issue with the import function however. I saved the data as .gpx files and put it in the correct google drive folder and was able to successfully import it into the program (the little green checkboxes appear), but the amount of the world that I have travelled hasn’t changed and the cleared “lines” haven’t been added to the fog either. I checked the .gpx file on a separate .gpx viewer and it seemed to work perfectly so I think the file is fine. Sorry for posting this here, I didn’t see a link to email app support..Version: 2.1.10
Google Drive functionality does not workApp claims that you can sync data and import to/from google drive, but after breaking my phone, losing the app, and trying to import data from Google Drive on a new phone, nothing is working. The import screen says to import GPX files from google drive, but when you sync up with google drive from the app, it’s not GPX files but these weird, unlabeled txt files. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong, but it seems ridiculous that the files synced from the app to Drive are not able to be imported back into the app..Version: 2.2.15
But what about support?I love this app. I have had it for years, and it has been flawless. I love that I can import GPX files. I love that it tracks in the background. I love that it no longer eats up battery power the way it did 10 years ago. It’s fantastic. However I recently lost my phone and I’ve had a devil of a time getting it reinstalled and updated on my new phone. I can see sync files in my cloud storage dating back one year three years seven years 10 years… But the track in the app is definitely incomplete, there is no help or support section available if you run into problems like this..Version: 3.6.13
Great app but needs more featuresTitle explains, 30$ for an app with no social bar where you can check ur progress versus friends / others is silly. No leaderboard is sad. There should be some sort of integration where you can compare levels / distance / achievements / passport to a friends. I’ve convinced 5 friends to buy this app and it’s a shame that there is no way to have a shared experience. Also altitude, speed, and other factors could be added. Every other app (even the free ones) have these features. I know this is a quality > quantity app but please please please it would change everything..Version: 3.7.4
Obsessed… BUTI have never enjoyed, loved, used, looked at, or played with an app more than this one!! I am so freaking obsessed with this app it’s not even funny. I constantly check to to make sure I’m going down new roads!! But can we please please please please please get an in app “erase” option??? Sometimes my GPS glitches and I’ll have random dots in places I haven’t been or it’ll think I’m going down a road until it relocates me and puts me back on the right path. I’d love to be able to clean up little glitches!!!.Version: 3.5.7
Great idea for an app! This is one of my favorite apps. I love being able to see and record everywhere I go, and the achievements and levels are a lot of fun. I would have given five stars, but I think the app’s development has been a little slow. There are a lot of improvements and features (like the option to mark locations on the map) that would be nice to have, but the app doesn’t get updated a lot. Still, I wouldn’t give it up for the world and haven’t found anything else that does what this app does. I highly recommend this app for those on the go, both locally and internationally!.Version: 2.1.8
Cool appI really like this app. I played Age of Empires a lot as a kid and play a lot of games with mini maps so this is like a real life combination of the two. It's also very precise. I drive a lot for work so it's cool to see map revealing the various paths I take day-to-day to see the totality in which I travel. I wish I discovered this app years ago, better late than never though. I like how there's achievements. Living in the US, I would love to see an achievement for traveling to all 50 states in America added by the developers..Version: 3.7.3
Just wish it would open at startupOr at least give users the option to set it up that way. I know that Apple is tracking my every movement at all times anyway, so I might as well be able to decide to get the achievements for driving near landmarks even if I’ve forgotten to load the app, or I’m too busy, or whatever. Other than that, though, this app keeps it simple and nails almost everything else it sets out to accomplish. And at least when it does crash, it sends a push notification to the user to let us know, which is apparently too much to expect from its competitors..Version: 2.5.3
App updated! Finally! Ty ty ty ty!!!!I called my brother about it today now that it's finally supposedly not a battery drain hog if you choose the right option. I've always loved this app but it's been very disappointing that with the money ppl have spent that it wasn't updated for around two years. Thank you for the update!! It doesn't mess with my iPhone navigation anymore if I have this and any other navigation app open at the same time. It used to delay the navigation by 15 secs or so which can make a big difference in cities..Version: 2.0
My #1 AppThis is the only app I have that I would feel lost in life should I ever lose it or the data contained within it. This app has inspired countless roadtrips and detours - put simply: Adventure. The only thing I regret is not having found it earlier than I had. I hope when I have kids, they will have the privilege of being able to use this app. I can only hope this app is available till the end of time..Version: 3.7
Great, but proprietary…My thoughts after using Fog of World for 12 years: (these are supposed to be bulleted lists, sorry if Apple messes up the formatting) Pros - Good at what it does - Offers backup options (caveat below) - Looks good - Encourages me to explore and take alternate routes - Beyond the cool/fun factor, I *frequently* make use of this app to see where I’ve been for practical reasons! - I’ve looked and found no other app that accomplishes the same thing even half as well Cons - Price tag is more than most iOS apps - Data is locked in a proprietary format and cannot be extracted! If this app ever gets abandoned and breaks on newer devices, there is no way to rescue your data - Battery usage is noticeable (but fairly well optimized) Overall, I highly recommend getting and using an app like this! I wouldn’t necessarily recommend *this* one, but I’m not aware of any others that are even slightly competent..Version: 3.6.2
Great appFantastic app and tracker. Comes with a set of challenges that you don’t see unless you want them. This app promotes exploring the world more and I love it. I walk or drive on streets I seldom travel. I learned more of my area and have seen really cool things I wouldn’t have otherwise! The privacy is also fantastic because I don’t like the free app that sell your location and data. Everything is hosted locally on your phone.Version: 3.6.14
One of the best apps available for map lovers. The price is steep I’ll absolutely give you that, but nothing compares if you’re the kind of person that likes to casually browse Google Maps and will go out of their way to try new routes for fun. The app does basically one thing and nothing else, but it does it well. The only missing feature currently is the lack of CarPlay support, but it is what it is..Version: 3.6.14
PLEASE NEVER DELETE THUSThe one thing that keeps me up at night is that one day, I will lose my Fog of World data. I hope to have this app downloaded over the next 40 years, following my adventures on this big, beautiful Earth! (Oh, but I did wish there was an “erase” feature. I’ve left FoW on during some plane rides and therefore have data which I feel as not having rightfully earned.).Version: 3.6.20
Crashes constantlyI’m trying to figure out why if we are paying for an app can’t we fix the issues at hand. I’m a truck driver and use the app to keep track of all the places I’ve been, however with the app crashing constantly, that’s very hard to do. Just sitting still in the past 30 mins the app has already crashed 4 times..Version: 2.1.39
Unfogged my life!!!!My absolute favorite app that has ever been made I’m high key obsessed. It encourages me to get out and explore the world and let’s me relive all my past adventures. I only wish I had this when I was younger, but I’m using this from here on out for the rest of my life. It also syncs on iCloud so switching your phone won’t lose all your data. Basically this app changed my life and I can’t wait to unfog the rest of the world!!.Version: 2.1.38
Obsessively fun!!I always have this app on (except on airplanes). It takes the stress out of getting lost (“I’m clearing more fog!), it solves arguments (“we’ve never been here before” “ yes, we have”), it’s helped me retrace my steps (“which fork in the trail did I come down?”), and it’s given me a great deal of pleasure to look back at a trip and see all the places I’ve been. I like the simplicity. Sure, it’d be fun to have different trips in color, for example. And I have yet to use the awesome new editor to fill in the multiple gaps where there was limited GPS signal. I’m always excited to see new places. I only wish I’d had it for some of the travel I did years ago. Thanks for making and supporting this fabulous app!.Version: 3.7.3
Great app keeps getting betterHad this app for 8 years or so? Love it and love the new features they keep putting into it. Absolutely been worth every penny. The ONLY quibble I have is that the constant GPS checking seems to really impact battery life, and there’s no way to turn it off other than manually. PLEASE add shortcuts/automation support to turn on/off tracking!.Version: 3.6.13
High Battery DrainI love Fog of World and have been using it since 2015. But the current version is consuming an unacceptable amount of my phone’s battery. In the past 24 hours, iOS reports that Fog of World is the biggest consumer of power on my phone, totaling +35% of the total battery usage using background location services. iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.3.Version: 3.6.2
Excellent AppI’ve had this app for about 8 years and it is still one of my favorites. It’s excellent for traveling, hiking, skiing, or any exploring type activity. I think it’s probably impossible to get lost while using this app. The urge to de-fog more and discover new places hasn’t faded over the years. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this app. I highly recommend it..Version: 2.3.11
The best side-mission since 2012I have been using Fog of World since 2014 literally everywhere I go. I absolutely love it! It’s rewired my brain to really seek out exploration both big (I’d love to travel to that state!) and small (have I really never been down this neighborhood street before?). My friends love looking at the map and helping me add to it by taking me new places. So so incredible..Version: 3.7
Fun travel app and amazing serviceI travel a lot and use the app everywhere I go. It’s a lot of fun to keep track of all the countries I’ve been to. Best of all, the customer service is amazing. I had some trouble with syncing my old iOS to Dropbox. Emailed for support and they manually updated all my files and converted them to the new format so my tracks weren’t lost. Very satisfied with everything..Version: 2.1.11
Not recording after iOS13 upgrade! After I upgraded my iPhone to iOS13, the software stopped recording. I’ve waited for an update which can fix this bug for almost a week but there’s nothing released to fix this. I’m your user since 2015 at that time your software was only $1.29! Now you have more than ten times money but why you guys still fixing bugs so slow?.Version: 2.2.19
I really love this app, after 5+ yrs i’m just now leaving this reviewThis app is a long play so forget whatever price you’re paying for it because it’s lasting you a lifetime. It’s gonna tell the story of your life somehow someway. it’s probably the most honest record of your existence. may your journey take you places that make great stories. -mj41.Version: 3.6.21
Terrible Update - DATA IMPORT FLAWEDLong-time user - latest update doesn't import all of my data - LOST 56 levels (now only level 240) LOST THOUSANDS of miles - for hundreds of miles around where I live. PLUS, the developer removed all communication paths. No longer part of the app & App Store link is dead. Prefer no updates to this bad update. Terribly disappointed..Version: 2.0
Welcome back with the new update!I loved the app so much, I continued to use the old version despite all its flaws. But the 2.0 has finally been released – and I can't be happier! The app has gotten cleaner, nicer, and drains less battery than it used to. I like the new passport view, it makes a nice summary of all countries I've visited. Hope this app lives a long life..Version: 2.0
Critical features still not releasedNo ability to erase tracks inevitably results in sloppy and ugly spotty flight tracks and random lines from times with poor GPS reception. This feature has been promised but remains unreleased years later. App is otherwise fun and fairly user friendly, but until tracks can be manually erased and edited I would say this isn’t worth the money..Version: 2.5.8
It’s a fun novel appIt’s really cool how I can see where I have visited, it can take up battery, but it’s running in the background 24/7. Not sure if it’s worth 40$, but at this point it’s been 2 years and I don’t care that I spend money on it. There are ZERO in app purchases. I just want more features like waypoints and a rotatable map..Version: 3.7.3
Great adventuringAs many have mentioned previously, there’s something so satisfying with driving down a new road or exploring a new park or landmark. I’ve used this app since 2013 and have enjoyed it very much. The only downside is that I wish that you could still see other’s levels on each continent compared to yours. Will this feature ever return?.Version: 2.1.39
I Love Fog of World!I’ve been using it for several years now and I do quite a bit of traveling around the US. I truly love being able to look back at my tracks that I’ve left. I’ve even been slowly adding stuff that was prior to the release of the first version of the app! I hope Fog of World is maintained for a great many years in the future. Thanks!.Version: 2.1.10
YASSSSI've had this app for years! And finally a new update has come! This update is so much better and it's definitely much cleaner and faster. I really really hope this app never goes away! It has all of my trips recorded on it and I love showing people. Please continue to update this app! Maybe providing info on what the rendering of the fog means (like heavy or thin). Thanks Ollix!.Version: 2.0
Pretty darn radThis app is pretty cool. It lets you know where you travel, I think it's interesting just to see what roads I DON'T drive on. It shows what parts of town i go through, and where i avoid. I think $5 is a bit much, but I bought it anyway because whatever, someone gave me a credit card..Version: 3.6.4
Super Fun! But a few suggestionsThis app is super fun! I love seeing my progress and it forces me to take different roads and explore my own backyard more. It would be good if there were more badges that were country specific. Living in the US it would be fun to unlock badges by visiting more states or national parks.
