Rover—Dog Sitters & Walkers Positive Reviews

Like Airbnb for dogs!I have used Airbnb to books days for myself so when it came time to need to board my pup it was awesome to find a similar service for him. My dog is not the type of personality that would be happy at all in a boarding facility with kennels. I was even able to find a sitter that enjoyed the fact that he wanted to sleep up on the bed. It seemed that no matter what needs my dog had there was a compatible sitter for him in the cities I looked. Some people offer to take big dogs running or have children to tire out even the most energetic of dogs. So just like with Airbnb for myself not every single house looks like a place that is good for my personality but when you find a good match it’s a great experience. My pup didn’t seem to want to leave much when I picked him up. It wasn’t like he was going crazy missing me and that’s a good thing. I was sent photos during his stay and I was able to contact and communicate with the sitter at any time, which I didn’t necessary because she was sending updates and pictures a few times a day. I actually wish I had more needs for boarding he was so happy. I am having back surgery this month and I’m going to use Rover to find someone on a few occasions to come and take my puppy out for some physical fun and maybe to the dog park while I am down. It’s just a great service you can find somebody to do whatever you need, wherever you are that will match your dogs personality and be affordable......Like I said it’s Airbnb for dogs..Version: 3.76.0

Great service, terrible appI’m both a dog sitter and owner and this is such a great service BUT the app is terrible. 1) When I make changes to my sitter profile and click Done, the changes are not saved. 2) I just found out that when you select “Depends” for “Friendly with Dogs?“, it doesn’t show up on your dog profile at all for pet sitters! So frustrating as this is such important information! 3) There is no way to update your profile name and there is no way to set more than 1 dog owner. So only 1 dog owner’s name is shown. When the other owner is talking to pet sitters, they have no idea who is talking to them and you have go keep signing your name. Moreover, when I created my pet sitter profile (my husband created our dog owner profile) the app took my husband’s name automatically for the pet sitter profile and didn’t let me enter my own! 4) The icon on the top left that you click to switch between “Past/Archived” and “Pending/Upcoming” doesn’t make any sense! I have never seen that in any other app. I’m an experienced app user and I worked for an app for 5 years and it took me a while to figure out how to find messages with our past dog sitter. Even after I learned that you have to click on that icon to switch to “Past/Archived” messages I still forget how to do it because it is just not intuitive. You should just have one inbox and let people Archive what they want..Version: 22.0713.01

Strange new privacy issue with that appI have been a pet sitter now for almost 3 years and love the app and I’m very active with River. 720+ bookings so far and start sitter status. In the last couple of weeks though I have noticed that the app is granting itself permission to communicate with my “files” app on my iPhone. When I first noticed it, toggled the permission off. Only to find it back in later in the day. After a little trial and error I figured out that it’s happening whenever I upload photos for a visit via the app. But this shoukd not be happening because the photos come from the photos app. The files app has documents and files for my personal life and there is nothing from there I would upload to send to an owner and River has no reason to be communicating with my files. This was never a problem before until 2 weeks ago. I went for Rover Support who took the info from me and said I would get an email from tech support. This is a big privacy issue because it’s connected to an unrelated process and there is nothing way for me to proactively turn off permission and prevent Rover’s access. I’m giving The benefit of the doubt that this is just a bug and not something intentionally set up. But it needs to be fixed. I’m going to stop using the app for photo uploads and will rely only on sending photos by text message. This is unfortunate because it means I will no longer be able to send videos which are only sendable via the app. Once this is fixed I’ll moved the 4 stars backup to 5.Version: 24.0918.00

Love working on this app!I started working for Rover on here two years ago and I don’t regret it for a single minute. At first, you wonder why you’re having no clients since you don’t have anything but testimonials and suddenly just one client changes the game. I’ve built up so many clients who became regulars and love me in my community!! Some of my very first clients still requests bookings all the time and I thank them for always coming around. I usually don’t consider myself a people person much, but I can say that some of the kindest people I’ve met have been my Rover clients. I’ve gotten to take care of so many different fur babies that I enjoy too. There’s legit so many other pluses to this app I can name. You set your own rates, accept clients based on your own availability, and the job itself is easy and pleasant. What can I say? You’re around animals all day! The functionality of this app is pretty awesome too. I feel like they’re always making updates to the app. One of things I’ll note about Rover is that its services mainly catered more to dogs even when I started. They now have a feature you can edit on your profile that caters to cat parents ONLY so they can see your skills. It’s really nice to see since I see a lot of animal companies do stuff that caters towards dogs only. I just love this app all around. You really get all your time’s worth investing in the sign-up process and the background check! As I said, that first client really changes the game. I love this job and I will continue to work with Rover services for the next few years and always encourage people looking for extra money to pick this app up!.Version: 24.0515.01

New Feature Suggestion & Critique from a Star SitterI suggest there be a different line on your calendar when you’ve restricted some but not all of your services. Somehow, the entire month was marked as unavailable for house sitting, leading to me earning less than $1k, and I live off of this full time. I’m not sure why it bugged, but if I had a mark on the calendar I would’ve figured it out sooner why I wasn’t getting booking requests. Also for new sitters; Rover will take 24% of your earnings, and charge your clients 11%, meaning they get 30% of all money exchanged. Despite this there is a side gig economy for this, so people will do house sitting for ~$20 / day because it’s just a small part of it. I wish there was an option to mark yourself as a career sitter and not just a gig worker. It is hard for people to understand why the price has so much difference until they’ve messaged plenty of sitters to find out whose actually available during the day. I am thankful for Rover, without it I wouldn’t earn a living as it’s hard to get references when you travel & it provides a nice way for clients to see all your reviews. I just wish they only took 15% or something. I’m sure they could run just fine on that, it’s just hard when anyone can just list themselves for $30 and people are less likely to message you when you’re charging twice that but have twice the time and triple the experience.Version: 25.0416.02

As a pet sitter I do have some concerns/tips of improvementThe app as a whole is an amazing idea. It’s helpful and helps me build clients. My only suggestions of improvement is a place for dog owners to put in vaccinations if the sitter requires them. There is no where in the app for a sitter to require vaccinations nor a place to the owner to put the vaccination records in. I think this needs to change ASAP. When I request vaccinations I sometimes get pushback and am fearful that it will effect my rating due to rover not making it an option to require it or not. Another suggestion I have is that I wish all forms of care come with a “Rover Card” if it’s boarding you get a new one daily to fill out and if it’s just day sitting, it doesn’t close once you add a walk. I love the idea of a rover card because it implements constant updates, shows proof of walks and lets the owners know their pets are being cared for. When I say sit though I don’t do the walk right before pick up, and want that walk recorded for the owner. If I record the walk though it closes the rover card which ends the stay even though the owner isn’t picking up yet. I’d love to see these changes in rover and would love to feel my ideas and concerns are being heard by rover. I do not need rover to have a successful dog sitting but use it to help build clientele. I just feel if Rover is taking 20% of my profits they should be willing to make a few changes to help improve my use of the app!.Version: 25.0514.01

Great Idea and ServiceLove that I found this!! I have a senior handicapped dog that I can no longer leave home by herself. Rover has been amazing to find high quality/trustworthy people to care for her and give me peace of mind that she’s in good hands. My only issues/recommendations are with the app itself: 1. There’s no way to cancel a request when it’s pending (please change this!!) 2. More options for care. For example, if my husband and I want to go out to dinner and I want to drop my dog off at someone’s home, it’s only a brief (maybe 1-2 hr?) visit but it’s a specific time (e.g. 6 or 7 pm). Right now I have to select the option to drop-off, then select the dinner times and have found it very difficult to find someone for something like this (and also not pay for a full day of care). Would be great if there were already sitters available and able to do brief care during early evening/dinner hours specifically. The current option is more for day-care (and the boarding option isn’t what I’m looking for as it’s only a brief drop off). Another is weddings and dog-sitting at a hotel for a wedding or special event. Spoke with a few sitters that said they had to get creative with this (and also ensure they were compensated properly)..Version: 22.1130.00

Nice app to use when traveling with dogs with one major glitchI travel quite a bit with my dogs and have used the Rover app to find a sitter to stay with my dogs at the hotel or AirBnB while I’m out to dinner, etc. The sitters I have found have been wonderful so far. The problem is the app. Because I need the sitter to stay with my dogs for longer periods of time, my search is for a house sitting not a drop in visit. The app allows me to enter the dates of service and the location (my hotel/airBnB) address, and it returns sitters near the hotel. But when I take the next step to contact the sitter, the app uses my home address for the booking which causes several problems: 1) it confuses the sitters-I had one sitter almost cancel on me the day of the booking because it was telling him he had to drive 2 hours and I have had several tell me I’m too far when I’ll be within 10 miles 2) when you contact a sitter, the app offers to send your request to other sitters too, but because it switched the location, it sent my request to sitters by my house not where I was traveling to resulting in me receiving offers from sitters who were too far away-163 miles (so frustrating!) 3) one of the reasons I use the app is so that I have a third party documentation of who is with my dogs, when and where-but again the address is wrong because the app switches it. I called their customer support, but I got some guy in Asia with a script and in the end he told me there was nothing wrong with the app-not “thanks for using our service and I’ll be sure to pass your feedback along”..Version: 24.0904.02

Distancing myself from this appAs someone who works for Rover, during a sit where a dog turned out to be aggressive, they had very little support for me as a sitter. I essentially had to stay through the sit with an aggressive animal. at the end of the stay I was even chastised for something the owners lied about, that I cleared up with Rover multiple times. I was also sent an article on “dealing with separation anxiety in dogs” which honestly I’d rather they have spat in my face, considering they were just puppeting the owners’ false narrative back to me, that their dog was somehow a victim and that the snarling/barking/charging/growling /nipping was justified. I know how to deal with anxious dogs, and this dog was aggressive, so nothing in the article was helpful or anything I hadn’t already been trying. I got a grand total of $50 to compensate for the genuine traumatic effect that sit has had on me. I haven’t been doing as many sits lately and get anxiety leading up to them now. I’m literally up at 4 am right now thinking back to the sit. I wanted to leave and make the owners return but was afraid of being penalized for the owners’ lies and carelessness. from what I’ve read from other sitters, you’ll be penalized for leaving a dangerous sit, or even acting in self defense if an animal attacks you. I feel unsafe now knowing that if anything happens, Rover will not have my back, and may even ban my account for the actions of the owners or animal..Version: 22.1130.01

Need a better way to filterHere are my thoughts. We use Rover or try to use rover while we travel with our dog. 50% of the time we end up using a professional boarding location as opposed to a rover person. Here’s why. Many if not most of the rover hosts are doing this to earn extra money. Which sounds great and all but there are draw backs. Typically we will have to contact 6 to 10 hosts in order to find one that is available. Why is it that people have themselves lists on the app if they are not available. Even ubuer has the option to turn availability on and off. There is nothing more frustrating then reading through the profile finding the perfect fit for our dog then reaching out only to have them say ....”Sorry I’m not available”. This happens over and over and over. Again this just happened so we are going with a local professional boarding business. Another filter option Rover needs to add is filter by hosts that accept un-neutered males. We have a large bread mastiff. It is recommended to wait until a minimum of 18 months to neuter in order to limit joint and growth problems. So again when you read through all the profiles and find the perfect host only to have the app tell you they don’t accept unfixed males when you try to contact them. Why not filter those profiles out before out base on our dog’s profile? Or make it a filter option. Anyway rover is a neat concept but only 50/50 in usefulness..Version: 19.07.02

I get paid to hang out with pets!My friend told me about this app and I decided to give it a try as a side job. I was a little skeptical when I had to pay for a background check. However after being a pet sitter for over a year and starting my little enterprise, this has really turned out to be a worthwhile investment. I love how I can modify my rates, create a profile with my own pictures, and write my own bio. Plus, everyone I have sat for have been extremely friendly and grateful that their fur babies were taken care of. If you love pets and don’t mind waking up early when the dog wants a walk, this is for you! And if you are a pet owner looking for a trustworthy app, this is the app for you! Plus the app is constantly updated to be even more detailed and convenient, such as video calls in place of meet and greets during the pandemic, and modifying a booking after it’s been confirmed. My only issue was that one time a false account contacted me about sitting their puppy. The person with the same name contacted me twice with different dog pictures on both profiles. Thankfully I did not meet up with this person and reported it. But I wish Rover would require a picture of the owner, or at least a picture of their pet, because now when I receive requests with photoshopped photos, or requests without photos, I sometimes feel skeptical about sitters’ safety..Version: 20.0729.00

Needs Better Safety MeasuresI’ve used the app as an owner and a sitter and have had good success, however there could be more done to protect both sitters and owners. As a sitter it would be great to get more detail on owners & pets. I can get requests day of with absolutely no info on both owner & pet and be penalized if I don’t accept. It would be great if I could view the owners picture and have a last name (same goes for sitters). If they aren’t going to background check owners I’d at least like to do some digging myself. I’ve had some questionable requests come through before that I’ve turned down due to safety concerns. I’d also like to be able to see reviews of owners just like I can with pets. They are requested from sitters but I have never seen owner reviews accessible to sitter unless the owner is also a Rover sitter. Lastly all info on pets should be required before a booking is submitted and pdf copy of vaccine records should be required by the app on a regular basis. As an owner, I would love it if all reviews are posted with star ratings, regardless of whether or not someone filled out written feedback. If a sitter is getting a lower score it could potentially go unnoticed if the owner doesn’t leave written feedback. I also think Rover cards should not be optional on drop-ins. My first time using the app, the sitter either didn’t feed my cats the food a left out with instructions or she didn’t come by. She never sent me pictures or completed the Rover cards so I will never know. Now I feel forced to use cameras..Version: 25.0108.00

The app is great but I don’t like the payment structureI have used Rover as both a provider (in the past) and a purchaser of pet care services. I love the interface and the opportunity to find and meet reliable caring people and my experience in both finding good clients (back when I did that work) and now I’m finding good people to care for my fur babies has been positive . . . BUT (and it’s a big ‘but’) I don’t like Rover’s payment structure. I don’t like that Rover takes a piece of the action forever and in my own experience kicks providers off if it thinks you’re going around them. (I wasn’t — but when they kicked me off I decided I was done with them and got future clients by word of mouth). Tinder and Match and other dating apps don’t get paid by the date — they get paid so long as people are listed. That is how Rover should work too. I don’t mind paying Rover a piece of the action for the first 3 or 4 times I use a provider that I found here but once that provider wins me and the pets over, she or he maintains the relationship and the service. Rover should get paid a fair fee for the introduction but should no longer get paid in the long term. That provider should not be at risk of being kicked off the app after that. I have found two great providers here and I will keep using them both. Happy to book through Rover for first 3-5 bookings. Will do it forever if the providers insist as I don’t want to compromise them on any way. But will not feel good about giving Rover any more money that should be going to these wonderful caring women for their time and effort..Version: 24.0724.00

Amazing concept, but a couple things about the app…Rover has helped me find so many families to sit for and is a life saver for a lot of people who are looking for sitters for their own fur balls! Just a couple things I would ask for improvement… So all the sitters using the app have to get background checks before even being able to book with anyone but then owners don’t have to? Because of this, just anybody can reach out to you, so I’ve had to block several weirdos/scammers🙃 (It’s typically noticeable if you look around at their request and search for red flags—a big one being when they only use a single letter as their first name instead of an actual name and then including little to no info about their pets/request way out of range/include WEIRD photos where it should be of their pets, etc.) Another thing: it would be great if photos and videos could send faster and with better quality!! Especially videos! It takes SO LONG for them to send, and sometimes they never go through, so I almost always have to send them directly to the owner’s cell rather than through the app because it lags (even with great wifi or data service)! Other than that, the concept is great and has helped me find so much clientele! I basically use Rover on a daily basis :) Just stay safe, and never accept anything that doesn’t feel or look right to you!.Version: 22.0713.01

Good service, but it could be more user friendlyI have been a dog walker and pet sitter on Rover for a couple of months now. I’ve gotten connected with many people in my neighborhood and make good money doing it. My only issue with the app is that it’s not the most user friendly for those trying to book services. For example, I had a woman asking me to check in on her pets over 4th of July weekend. She has 3 dogs and a cat and wanted me to check on them once on the 3rd, three times on the 4th, and once on the 5th. The first issue with that is that is that she would have had to create at least 2 separate bookings because the app doesn’t allow users to choose a different amount of visits for different days. My second issue was that the app should have charged her my holiday rate (x3 days), the additional dog rate (x2, because she had two additional dogs) (x3 days), and then one additional cat rate (which is $0 in my case, cats are easy). Instead the app tried to charge her for 9 total visits and the holiday rate for each of her pets which brought her total to over $700 which is wayyyyyy over what her actual total should have been. Luckily we caught this before going through with our booking. I’ve had several other instances similar to this, but this was the most extreme. The app needs to update its UI so this issue doesn’t occur..Version: 20.0609.00

Great Customer Service! Not the best first experience! We were nervous about having our 2.5 year old Terrier Mix stay with someone he doesn’t know. We have only had him about 9 months and he hasn’t been away from me. I communicated with multiple potential sitters and finally decided on someone. I wasn’t sure how my dog would react to having another dog but I was assured by the sitter that if her puppy (5-6months) and my dog didn’t get along that she would crate her dog and keep them separate. Everything was going well until day 2 when I get messages that my dog is going out to the bathroom then peeing on her floor. I asked if she’s cleaned after other dogs and he’s a boy so he’s probably trying to mark his territory since she has another dog..... then I get a message that my dog was hurt (no explanation how) and that I need a friend or family to pick him up! Well, if I had someone to watch him I wouldn’t be using this app! I called customer service and they were wonderful!!! Rob was very caring and helpful! Rover facilitated finding a new sitter to take in my baby, paid the difference from what I paid to the new sitter, and arranged for him to be transported to the new sitter! They were so caring and helpful! The new sitter however never even confirmed with me that she had my dog until I asked her how he was doing. She also didn’t send the daily updates I requested. Wish there was a better system for the owners to screen the sitters! After the lies I received from the first girl and what happened to my baby I had a few anxious hours but customer service really helped ease my worries!.Version: 3.78.0

Scammed on the first dayI have only been on rover for less than 24 hours as a sitter. I thought it would be an easy way to make some extra money while doing something that I love doing. But this morning I received my first booking. At first I thought it was weird there was no pictures of the dog and no information about the dog. The client asked if she could text me off the app so I offered her my google number to keep mine private. She asked for me to watch her dogs for a few days and asked to meet on Saturday. I agreed and set a time with her. A few minutes later she asks if I’m busy today. I told her I wasn’t and she asked if I could run some errands for her and she would pay me $200. I wanted more information and assumed it would be maybe taking her dog to like an appointment that she had forgotten about and couldn’t make. Turns out it was buying check paper and printing a check on it that her accountant emails me and depositing it into my account and keeping the fee and reimbursement money and paying a utility bill for her. Turns out this is a scam method a lot of people use. I really wish Rover would do more in monitoring the owners like they do with the sitters. I realize it was my choice to talk with her off of rover but I think Rover should ask that a picture of their pet and more information then just name, age, breed, and weight be required so sitters don’t have to deal with scammers as often. More information required may deter them since it will make them take more time to fill out profile information before they can scam sitters. Also maybe add a basic background check for the owners like the sitters. Real people who need a sitter will accept a free background check in order to get a good sitter..Version: 19.09.24

Good app, poor customer service.I started using Rover as a way to make money over the summer while hanging out with animals. I really like having total control over my profile and my rates. Almost all of my experiences with people on the app have been great except for one. The dogs were fine but it was the owner I was having issues with. She asked me to drive her dog to various appointments which was not part of our initial agreement. After I dropped her dog off for weekend care at the ER, I expressed my discomfort with picking him up early in case his condition worsened and he would need to go back. She ghosted me and wrote me a nasty review that is inaccurate and omitted details in favor of making me look bad. In reality, I had done nothing wrong. I contacted Rover support to explain the situation and asked them to remove the review. They told me no, and that I would just have to reply to her instead. They even added that I was “the core foundation of Rover and without me, this platform wouldn’t grow”. I have little interest in doing business for an app that does not care about its sitters. My advice if you decide to use this app is to do everything you can to avoid getting a negative review, because it will be on your profile forever. There is no point in trying to contact support, they will not help..Version: 24.0710.00

Needs better availability ranges!I love the concept of this app and it’s awesome to be able to have a small side income as I’m trying to pay off some student loans. My main issue is the fact that the ranges for my availability are way too broad. I think it would be smart to allow walkers to give their exact availability times for each day. I work different hours for each day of the week, and although it’s consistent week to week, it doesn’t align with the app’s current setup. If I’m working until noon on Monday and then until 6 Tuesday, I can’t really set up my dog walking schedule to align with that (as the ranges are 6-11, 11-3 and 3-10. If I get off work at 6 on a Tuesday I can’t say my range is 3-10 because it’s really only 6-10 and if I get off at noon on Monday I can’t say my range is 11-3 because I’m not available until after 12. See the problem?) It would be awesome for those with full time jobs looking for a side income to be able to put their exact availability instead of choosing between three very broad ranges. I’ve seen message boards everywhere asking for this so I’m hoping the developers actually take this to heart! They’d have a lot more business if we were confident in our availability and didn’t have to cancel certain services that don’t make it in the actual availability window of a sitter or walker..Version: 22.0907.00

Pretty goodApp works pretty well, but sometimes can be quite glitchy. Bare spots on the map on the walk route card, even with location always on for the app. Sometimes Rover card fails to send for a long time even when all my other apps are working (so it’s a Rover issue not connectivity issue). The worst thing is that they take 20% of your pay in an already kinda low paying job. I get 20% or even more for the first job, because they help you find the client, but 20% each time is such a ripoff. The client is staying with me because of me, not because of Rover, and I have my own insurance so it’s not doing me any services. In fact the jobs I take outside of Rover are less work - texting my clients photos and updates is easier than dealing with the app. Rover needs to lower the cut they take after the first job with a new client to 5% or less. ALSO - Pet owners that want to hire someone on Rover should also have background checks or at least reviews available for sitters to see. Sitters get background checks but owners don’t and it can be dangerous entering a total stranger’s home. I don’t take any overnight jobs on Rover because I feel like that would beincredibly unsafe. And also because 20% of a house sitting fee is huuuuge and makes the job not even worth it..Version: 23.1004.00

Good app but the company needs workI love the concept of the app! It’s a great way to connect owners to qualified sitters in the area. However I believe River needs to do more to ensure the safety of the sitters. They have a rover guarantee that will cover vet care and expenses if a dog is injured during a stay but offer no such protections for sitters. I understand that watching dogs is a risk but the fact that owners and dogs aren’t subject to background checks or vaccination requirements is a bit annoying. I got bit in the face while playing with a dog and ended up having to get stitches and have permanent scaring. Rover covered absolutely nothing and the only way to get the owner to pay was to take them to civil court and sue, which I decided against out of fear of lowering my Rover reputation due to a bad review from them in retribution. After the fact I found out that this wasn’t the first time the dog had expressed aggressive behavior during play and had bit his owner a few time prior to this incident. This was not relayed to me during the meet and greet when I asked if the dog had any aggressive tendencies or toy possessiveness. I followed all steps of the Rover policy prior to and during the booking and feel that I should have had some protections against this incident. It’s crazy that the dogs expenses can be covered but not the sitters..Version: 20.0211.00

Useful app; needs serious workThis is a useful app, but it needs serious work. Here are just a few issues (from the perspective of a pet owner; I can’t speak for the sitter side of things): It encourages you to send booking requests to multiple people, which is fine, but then there is no easy way to delete pending requests once you have already settled on a pet sitter. This is a nuisance for both the pet owner and the sitter (I know the latter because a frustrated sitter has asked me to delete the booking on my end, as she couldn’t easily do it either…) There is no calendar or even list view where you can see all past and future bookings. It’s all arranged by “conversations” (both bookings and non-bookings) which is not useful. No easy way to navigate to the page of a sitter you’ve used before. You have to do a search for a new booking—with a specific date—to see the pages. No place designated for instructions specific for a given trip. So, you have to include any specific details under the pet profile instead of having the two types of information as separate boxes—one under the pet profile, that carries from one booking to the next, and one only for communication/instructions with a specific sitter re a specific booking. Sure, you can message the sitter, but it would be much more convenient for everyone if there just was a text box associated with the booking (but not the profile), which you can edit etc as you think of any new details. These are just some of the issues. It’s fine for an app that’s just starting up, but Rover has been around long enough that there really is let a good excuse. Again, the idea is great. But c’mon Rover, hire some UX folks and make this better..Version: 24.0626.03

4/5I’ve had a great experience being a dog sitter on Rover. My only complaint is that 20% fee they take is pretty high and that app has major glitches when I try to send videos to my customers. Also it’s really annoying to keep receiving emails when i give my number to the customer. Sometimes the person who requested the sitting isn’t the one meeting with me but their spouse instead, so i forward my number for easier communication. Overall is you’re willing to work and have enough space to host multiple clients like me you’ll be making a really good amount of money. I made sure to put my cancellation for 2 days prior. I’ve had too many people be disrespectful towards my time and try to cancel last minute because they found someone cheaper or their friend told them last minute they can watch their pets. People have to understand that i reserved this time for their pet and them canceling last minute messes my schedule up when i could have booked with someone who would have followed through. So i appreciate rover still paying us sitters a little even if we have a cancellation . I do this part time and I’ve watched my monthly earnings go from $900 a month and I’m about to have my biggest month yet that will be $4000..Version: 23.0712.00

Pretty great all aroundI started using rover when I moved states to find someone to care for my pups when we’re gone. The app made it easy to find people close to us and sitter profiles make it easy to find someone you think is the best match and contact them. As I sitter Rover has been great at helping me build my business. Im a nursing student and I’ve been able to build a flexible business that I enjoy that brings in enough income to support my family. The app makes it easy to see what is on my schedule daily and communicate with my clients. There are a few things they could do to make it easier for me to modify my clients bookings as needed. My biggest complaint is how ridiculous the fees are for both pet parents and pet sitters. I understand they have to make money too and as the middle man they absolutely deserve their cut. They also provide rover support, vet help and other things that protect both the sitter and pets. But taking 20% of the sitters income from every service PLUS adding 3-5% in rover fees to pet parents service total is insane. Seems a little greedy if you ask me and that not how you keep sitters and pet parents to continue using the app for the their services..Version: 23.0322.01

Great app but needs some improvementsThis app has been great for a side business while I have been off work and wanting something to do. I love animals so this was perfect. I’ve met a lot of new people, fur-babies and made good money. However, there is room for improvement. First off, they need to require that pet parents fully fill out their profile. It is so hard to determine if a stay is going to be a good fit when half or more of the info is blank and then the sitter gets penalized for denying the stay if they’re available. 2nd, you should be able to choose your mileage range per job category. The app lumps the range for everything. A house sitting job further away is worth it, but a dog walk is not, based on their fees, for me anyway. So, as a sitter I should be able to choose how far I want to go for each category. I also had a horrible experience with pet owners saying their dogs were cat friendly then literally they walked in my door, attacked my cat and almost killed him. Rover did kindly cover most of the costs. But, they don’t cover costs for injuries to the sitter or damage to the house. I had injuries but didn’t want to have to pay out of pocket. I also wish this app had an easier way to request reviews, other than having to message the pet owner every time requesting one..Version: 23.0712.00

Read if you plan to sit. Great app BUT could have some qualifications for the doggy’sI’ve been a sitter on rover for over two months and have had many different dogs with different personalities. However some owners have no decency when it comes to leaving their unbehaved dog with people. I believe rover is a great app for people to find sitters and sitters to sit but there was a person who left their dog with me and the dog, chewed my pillows, is impossible to walk and sprints max speed dragged his two owners and my mother, constantly barks for long periods of time with no reason he’ll have food, water, and has been let out but will continue to bark. The bark isn’t quiet it’s a loud screeching deep bark. They left me a crate incase he misbehaved, I didn’t plan on using it for punishment for him personally I wanted him to like to sleep in his crate and be comfortable. However after he chewed the pillows and kept barking I put him in the crate. Nothing changed he still continued to bark. Myneighborhors complained. I just feel as though if you leave your dog with someone, even a professional, make sure it’s wel trained so it’s not a inconvenience for the sitter tending with other dogs..Version: 21.0818.01

Needs improvementAs a new sitter I feel we need more options to customize the pets we sit. 1) We should be able to enter the dogs weight instead of letting us choose up to 15lbs for small dogs, then the next option is up to 40lbs. I’m able to sit for dogs up to 25-30lbs but I don’t have that option…frustrating. I don’t want to miss out on dogs that are 20 lbs but I don’t want a 40lb dog. 2) I should be able to customize the dog size for dog daycare to dog boarding. If I have an older but small dog I’m sitting, I don’t want a 40lb dog in daycare. I wish we could adjust based on the day based off the dogs we are currently caring for. The calendar could also be updated, would be great if we could link Rover to our personal calendars. I also would love if it would show a full calendar with all the dogs we’re sitting and M&G’s. That way it would make it a lot easier to see who we are sitting on which day and would make it easier to see compatibility issues before accepting a new booking. Rover should also send owners notices to update their dog profiles. So many times it says the dog is 15 lbs but then the dog comes over for a M&G and it’s 50+ lbs because when the owner created the profile their dog was a puppy..Version: 22.0928.00

Pretty good. Would like small improvementsI have been using rover for over a year now. I’ve used about 10-15 different dog sitters and I’ve had a 95% success rate. I have had mostly awesome experiences and 2 bad ones (sitter wasn’t home when I dropped off or picked up and didn’t answer calls) :( but if that’s the worse thing, not too bad. My one suggestion to this app would be to develop a block function. A way for me to block certain sitters from coming up in my future searches. Sometimes a sitter tells you they won’t watch your dog, or if you have a bad experience (like them no showing up) ... it would be nice if they didn’t keep showing up in your searches. If they added this feature the app would be nearly perfect in my opinion. It is a bit annoying for me to try and remember which sitters had already told me no in the past or had some other reason for not being able to watch my dog. Then I end up having a weird conversation with them all over again. That being said - I can’t speak for all areas and sitters (because I’ve heard horror stories) ... but I’ve tried many sitters in So. Cal. (SGV) and I keep coming back for more because the good far outweighs the couple unreliable people out there..Version: 20.0211.00

No protection for the dog sittersI like overall design and functionality of the app. But one thing I do like to point out: Rover doesn’t seem to care about dog sitters’ safety or interests. For example, they only do background checks for dog sitters but there is no check on dog owners. Although most dog owners are very nice and polite, sometimes there’re rude or skeptical people. Another thing is that Rover only allows dog owners to review dog sitters but not the other way around. Despite most dogs I have sat are well trained, some dogs are not. Meet and greet normally is not enough to tell if the owner is telling the truth. If the dog peed and pooped all over your house or did something aggressive or dangerous, except for leaving a note for yourself and Rover, there’s no way you can share it with other fellow dog sitters. So dog owners don’t have any consequences if they lie or their dogs create damages. Other dog sitters just have to go through it again. Rover should allow dog sitters to see reviews from other dog sitters so that dog owners will have consequences if they lie. If a dog is badly trained, dog sitters can make informed decisions to either reject it or charge extra. I complained about these issues but every time Rover just said they will record the suggestions and nothing happens afterwards. I guess they just don’t want to hurt the business.Version: 20.0805.00

Love the service, not so much the app!I love Rover! It's an amazing service for dog owners and dog sitters. But the app needs some improvement. The calendar is pretty much useless as it doesn't show your bookings..Version: 3.40.0

A great side hustle for the right peron (READ FULL DISCLAIMER)I am someone with an entire life of experience taking care of dogs and cats. For me, this has been a fantastic and relatively easy way to make some extra money! After my beloved senior dog passed away I definitely wanted to wait a while before getting another pet. But very quickly our house felt empty without one, so we decided to become sitters on Rover. It was one of the best decisions we have ever made. I would take care of most of these lil bebs for free because I end up completely falling in love almost every time. The majority of people willing to pay my added fee for housesitting requests are usually VERY financially comfortable. As someone who rents a small apartment downtown, this makes housesitting honestly a joy and a privilege. I often feel like I’m on vacation in these super nice homes taking care of cute pets. Keep in mind the nicer the home, usually the more high maintenance the pet is (absolutely at the fault of the owners who baby them like literal children who need their teeth brushed every night before bed lol). Full disclaimer it was NOT EASY AT FIRST AND IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. It took about 6 months of trial and error to design our profile and scheduling habits in an optimal way. I have had friends who were inspired by me to try sitting on Rover and found it very overwhelming. I want to be VERY CLEAR in that this is not for everyone and it is not a get rich quick kind of side hustle. It works for me because I am 27 years old with literally 27 years of experience taking care of dogs and cats (always 2 or 3) at the same time. I grew up on a massive property in the country with everything from chubby house cats to stray cats we took in, from shih tzu’s to german sheppards and pitbulls. I’ve had friendly and aggressive dogs, cats with chronic health issues and everything in between. My experience is what makes its easy and enjoyable. But my friends with less experience would leave a very different review. I also want to highlight the importance of being EXTREMELY responsive to messages. Rover will send you to the bottom of the list and make you invisible very quickly if you are not responding to every message within minutes. Your calendar must always be up to date or you get docked for declining too many requests in a time where you were supposed to be available. You have to be super specific about your preferences and comfort levels with everything you can think of on your profile to avoid having to decline too many requests. Running the app and the networking portion of this side hustle is almost equally as important and demanding as taking care of the pets. Take that into account. I have had to go to the hospital from a dog bite to the face. I have had owners bold face lie to me about the behaviour of their dogs. I’ve had reactive sibling dogs fight each other out of no where and the owner try to blame me for redness in the eye as a result of the fight. These bc are peoples babies and they are protective so if you are anything less than perfect it will be an issue. Rover also has the ability for both owners and sitters to leave completely private reviews of each other that only the Rover team will see. Keep that in mind because although an owner doesn’t leave you a public review, they may have left a private review for Rover and if you’re wondering why you don’t get requests anymore, thats why. So if you read this far, I want to reiterate that Rover has changed my life for the better as a a sitter. I make enough money to cover all of my home bills every month (that is gas, electricity, water, and internet) plus some leftover which goes towards a big Costco grocery haul. While being careful to book time off to rest between dogs and a few weekends and holidays to myself, I am consistently booked up usually 3 months in advance. I would recommend this as a side hustle to anyone with a SIGNIFICANT comfort level with pets and who is extremely responsive and organized. You will not do well if you are anything less. Good luck 😊.Version: 23.0809.02

Majorly disappointedI had booked a pet sitter in North Bay, Ontario as my boyfriend and I were visiting family over the holidays. I had organized a sitter on December 14th 2023 for December 28th 2023. She was the only sitter available in the area and charged $90 plus the $10 Rover fee. We went and did a meet and greet with the sitter and our pup so they had a chance to meet. Everything went well. When I went to drop off my dog I assisted her in bringing in his sleepover stuff into her apartment. I was shocked to find her apartment in complete disarray with garbage, dishes and such everywhere. I felt unsafe leaving my dog there so I took him and left. I was then charged a $54 cancellation fee. I left a review and filed a complaint about this sitter. I then called Rover the next day as I noticed the charges on my credit card. They told me there is nothing they can do in regards to a reimbursement of any kind as the sitter set their own prices and such. They recommended I contact the sitter and ask for the money back. When I went to do so she had deleted her profile. I was blamed for this experience by Rover as I didn’t go inside this persons house at our meet and greet. Please watch out for scammers and make sure your pets have a safe place to stay..Version: 23.1213.00

Great concept, awful appThe calendar function is hard to use. I wish I could give hourly availability and customize my availability to each day. Not being able to do this means I am getting very few clients which sucks. Also a 20% cut is quite steep… Great service idea though..Version: 21.0818.00

CalendarI really wish there was hourly availability for the calendar. For example: If i work during the day, I can still board a dog for the night but I am unavailable in the day until a certain hour..Version: 19.07.02

Good for pet loversAs a little extra cash, it’s a great opportunity. Once you pay the $50 for the background check, you are up and running. You can share a promo link or qr to gain clients, and offer whichever services are best suited to you. I recommend getting liability insurance if you’re having home boarding as home insurance doesn’t cover boarding dogs. Great way to meet and spend time with dogs of varying ages and breeds.Version: 26.0218.03

Greatest side hustle if you wfhUser-friendly app, great way to get your steps in too!.Version: 26.0107.00

Cancellation PolicyNeeds to be reviewed. If for example the weather is so bad a pet owner cancels their plans and needs to cancel their visit, it is likely that they just saved the pet sitter from a dangerous drive themselves. There should be no cancellation fee for situations such as this, no fee to the owner or sitter..Version: 26.0121.03

LoveEasy to use, great pet sitters would recommend.Version: 25.1210.01

Great Service. What a great service this is! I do wish the review process for rating sitters was a little more flexible. I tried to leave a review for two pet sitters, but I was asked a lot of information that they didn’t know. For example, what is their home like. I have no idea because I wasn’t invited up. I wish they had an option for not applicable or a skip button..Version: 25.1231.00

Giancarlo and RobertaGiancarlo and Roberta were amazing walking Cooper! They were thoughtful, punctual and real kind to our fur baby. I would definitely not hesitate to entrust them with walking him or boarding him. They love what they do and it is evident!!!.Version: 25.1210.01

No longer compatible with my older phoneI’m not sure how I’ll continue sitting after January 1 when my phone is no longer compatible with the update.Version: 25.0122.02

ExcellentWe were recommended Rover by our vet, and had never used a house sitter for our cat before while we went on vacation as he was younger and our vacations were shorter. But we took a chance and were pleasantly pleased and shocked at how professional our house sitter was, mature and reliable. And how much our 17yr old boy loved her. We’re currently on our second vacation using our wonderful kitty sitter and have already booked her for our third trip in a few months….Version: 25.1126.00

GreatGreat app for dog and pet owners to get reliable pet sitting and walking service!.Version: 25.1126.00
