Narwhal for Reddit App Comments & Reviews

Narwhal for Reddit Positive Reviews

Finally progress!Narwhal 1 was a great app but it had so many quirks and bugs and the dev rarely fixed them because he was spending all his time on Narwhal 2. For years he got to enjoy this app and pretty much no one else could. Then Reddit cracked down on the API usage and pretty much forced the dev to make changes and finally release this app. I hate subscriptions but I’m so glad he was essentially forced to finally release this major update. The app is so much better now! The dev is very responsive at fixing things now and I think it’s well worth the cost! There are so many 1 star reviews here that either don’t understand the subscription (not the devs fault, blame Reddit) or they are mad that Apollo no longer works and they are expecting this app to be exactly the same as that one. People are too lazy to spend the time going through the options to customize the app the way they want. With that said, just give the app a try and and go through all the options. If you invest the time you can make this app perfect for your needs and if something is missing, request it! Don’t complain and leave bad reviews!.Version: 2.105

An excellent app from a dedicated developerI downloaded Narwhal in April of 2016, and I dont think I have gone more than a week without using it since then. The developer is a one man shop who has worked very hard to overcome some of Reddit’s recent decisions so he can continue to offer this app that I and many others rely on. Reddit has forced all 3rd party apps to pay for their API usage. If a subscription is not an option for you, you can use the official reddit app or a web browser. Personally, I would rather not do either of those things, since I find the interface and constant ads very annoying. I can afford to pay the subscription and a bit more to support this developer. I understand not everyone is able to do that, but please, if that is the case, direct your anger toward the bone-headed exectives at reddit, not this developer, who has no control over the situation. Det0ur, I hope for your mental health you are staying out of the reviews, but if you do read this, I want to thank you for all you have done to bring us this excellent app. Do not be discouraged by the hate, know that you are appreciated..Version: 2.104

Best reddit app I’ve found.I’m not one to leave a review typically, but this app is my most used by far and it deserves praise. The most used functions of reddit such as browsing and sorting through posts and comments are nicely designed and intuitive to navigate on both my iPhone and iPad. Though there are a multitude of options in menus and sub menus that I personally found confusing at times, there is no doubt you can make the app as simple or complex as you’d like. Signing into my reddit account was easy and has me replying to comment threads or scrolling through my favorite subs in no time. The developers constantly make minor tweaks and subtle improvements that keep the app running smooth as silk. My only gripe is going through my comment history and not being able to pull up the original post from my comment alone, but rather I would have to select the OP’s profile and scroll through to the post to open it. A minor inconvenience that I don’t feel warrants a less than 5-star review from me. Overall, if you’re looking for a great reddit browser for your iPhone or iPad, look no further than Narwhal..Version: 2.30

Still goodI used this a few years ago but stopped because the video player had a lot of issues and I think some other things. It runs much smoother and better now. The only problem I have is with the “hide all”/“hide read”/“mark all as read”. If you hide everything with or w/o marking as read, and refresh, everything you just hid is now unbidden. So hours of scrolling through things and then hiding all of that simply so it doesn’t show up yet again, only for *all* of it to show up again. It happens if you leave the app for awhile and come back as well. Thank you thank you THANK YOU for giving the ability to filter subs. I get so sick of seeing the exact same ones over and over on r/all and ones that I have no understanding of (like fandoms I’m not a part of). EDIT**** now I remember why I deleted Narwhal. The “hide all” feature doesn’t work either as intended or as expected. It’s *so* frustrating when 100s of posts you specifically didn’t want to see again show up AGAIN AND AGAIN. I don’t mean to be harsh, it’s a great app. It’s just that one thing that ruins it for me..Version: 2.37

So much customization!Coming from iAlien (which I was very happy with) was kinda weird. The menu bar being on the right than the left was hard to get used to also. BUT as time went on the app gained more traction and more customization options kept being added. Things like what happens to a video or post when force touching (for force touch compatible devices) or what icon you prefer to use. Dark and light mode with a single tap! No going through settings to change the mode when viewing at night or day. The font you read can be changed. Literally almost everything can be changed to your liking. You can even hide certain menu options that you find yourself never using at all. Hopefully one day they add an option to switch the menu tab from the right to left lol. Recently a new tab was added called recently viewed and my goodness I did not know how much I actually would use that tab. I always find posts I find interesting but forget to save it and wouldn’t be able to find it later. Now I just go to that tab and it’s there! It’s super useful..Version: 2.12

Actually goodI was quite skeptical about this app going in, since most of the previous Reddit app alternatives have been lacking and have now gone defunct. However, there is a clear reason why this one has stuck around—it's actually good. Just about every issue I had with this app had a solution in the settings, or some way to do it that I didn't notice at first. It still does have some small quirks and issues that I hope they will iron out in future updates, but it's far superior to the official Reddit app and has far fewer problems; nothing dealbreaking for me. The only downside is that the app settings are a bit tricky to navigate since it's so customizable, and a tad on the advanced side. It will definitely take you a day or two to get the settings the way you want them to be. It IS a subscription app, which is not super great, but it's well worth it for the amount they've clearly put into it to make it good. So I'm happy to pay these devs for what they're worth, and frankly they probably deserve more!.Version: 2026.4.2

Intuitive, streamlined, like RES for mobileI've tried them all: redditisfun, bacon reader, the official app, and none compare to Narwhal. First a lot of things function in gestures. Swipe left to up vote and swipe more left to down vote. Swipe right to save a post or reply to a comment and more right to access other options. To go back or forward just swipe the page left or right. Pull from the left to bring up the customizable menu. It also supports the 3D touch so you can hard press to preview the post or thread (your choice in the settings). Comments, threads, and chains are collapsible with a touch. You can set it up to hide posts after you view them. I think this is on by default and can be a bit alarming if you aren't expecting it. Don't worry, if you want to go back and look at it again, you can go into your recently viewed through the menu. You can also unhide the post. There are ads I'm the free version but if I recall they are just banners and sponsored posts. I paid the $4 to remove these because I like to support developers and especially ones who do the one and done pay model. No subscription, you just pay once and you're good. The developers are just doing this on the side as a sort of passion project. Along with the no ads, the premium gives you more customizing options. I'm not sure which ones are under the pay wall because I paid after like a day. But my husband hasn't paid on his phone and the app is perfectly usable without it. And there's also a night mode which is available in the free version..Version: 2.15

Best app for Reddit, hands down.Dev cut a deal with Reddit to pay by the whatchamacallits they charge for, then figured out how much he needed to charge users to cover the cost. It worked. He then aggressively modified the app to use fewer whatchamacallits, reducing costs to the users. I pay like $4.50/mo to use Reddit. It's a ridiculous bargain, even if you don't consider that this is after 15 years of using it for free. He's active and responsive to bug reports, and is regularly adding features. If he didn't believe he could make this payment model work long-term, or if he didn't truly intend to do so, he'd be doing the minimum fixes necessary, but that's not the case. He's making the app better all the time. He cares. Besides all that, Narwhal has been my go-to reader for Reddit for ten years or more. It was great, is great, and there's every reason to believe it'll continue to be great. And people, if all that's not enough, don't forget that this is a viable way to avoid using the official Reddit app. August 2025 Update: Still just as great, dev still just as responsive with fixes and features. Product continues to be awesome. If you don’t understand there’s a *Reddit-imposed* cost to use any app other than Reddit’s own app, educate yourself rather than criticize Narwhal, because your ignorance is your issue to fix, not something to blame on the app..Version: 2025.3

Almost perfectI think this app is one of the best ways of browsing reddit on my iPad. However, there is one complain I have: The left sidebar, where you scroll through the list of posts in a sub, is just too narrow. There is the <-> icon at the top of the screen, but, from what I can tell, it can only be used to make the comments section on the right even bigger, but there is no way to make the topic section on the left any bigger than a narrow bar. Since every post title takes up multiple vertical lines, you can see fewer of them on the screen at once, and it takes a lot more scrolling to get through a sub than it would if there was a way to make the list wider (so that each topic takes up only one). I would like to see: - An option to at least split the screen 30/70, 50/50, or 70/30, between the topics list and comments view. This could be done by simply adding a couple more buttons at the top, near the existing one. - And/or I think it would be nice to be able to use a horizontal 2 finger swipe gesture to slide the divider back and forth (essentially doing what the <-> is doing, only adding the ability to 2-finger swipe to the right to shrink comments and expand topics list). - An option or button to set it so that the posts/topics list takes up a majority of the screen while you’re scrolling through it, until you tap on a post, which will automatically expand the article/comments side of the screen..Version: 2.30

Decent App, but Not for MeAfter two weeks of use, here are my impressions off the app: It’s a good alternative to Reddit’s native app. + You can search directly for a user or subreddit, + you can upvote/downvote posts/comments with swipes (as well as reply, save, and more), + and many other functions more than the Reddit app. + It even has a neat little tutorial for basic use at the top of the screen! However, I have several issues with the app: - Following a user seems vague (the “+Friend” is unclear to me), - You can upvote/download posts & comments older than 6 months (which Reddit doesn’t allow), making me doubt if my votes are actually registering in the site. • I know I can probably verify by accessing the post/comment from a browser, etc., but I don’t really wanna do that. - The auto-preview is all-or-nothing, which will show photos & videos and direct you to websites upon clicking the post, or leave the post blank when clicking it. I haven’t figured out how to use it to my liking, so maybe it’s just a setting I missed or uninstalling-then-reinstalling the app. - Clicking the source link (e.g. photos/videos from Imgur) does not take you to it. My fingers might be too fat to choose it, or I’m doing it wrong. 🤷‍♂️ These aren’t objectively negative issues, just my opinion on what doesn’t work for me. It offers a different user-experience than other Reddit clients, which others will enjoy more than me. Keep up the good work folks!.Version: 2.41

The Best Way to RedditReddit has been going through a lot of changes over the last two years, but one thing hasn’t changed much: the official app is bad. Cluttered, clunky, and not fun to use; it’s such a miserable experience, you can’t even change text sizes within the app itself. I highly recommend Narwhal 2 instead; it represents a lot of hard work and determination, bringing back the best of what we lost years ago when Reddit cut ties with most third party apps, and maybe something more. Fast, responsive, and feature-rich with a ton of customization options, Narwhal 2 can be Reddit however you want to experience it. Recreate what you liked in a previous app or make it your own; it’s amazing what you can tweak in this app. Well worth a subscription, Narwhal 2 is a worthy successor to any of the previous generation of Reddit apps that gave up the ghost..Version: 2025.2

I don’t usually review appsThis has taken over as my primary app on my phone since APOLLO died. Since then, I’ve been a paid user of narwhal and can honestly recommend it. The price is fair and functions are great. It doesn’t come close the functionality that Apollo had, but at the same time, it’s got great bones and works fairly well. There’s some hiccups here and there but the interface is highly customizable and easy after a few session of use to where you get comfortable with the app. Posting, commenting, etc is fairly easy, but some functionality is missing. That said, it is a third party app that delivers and is miles ahead of the terrible native app that Reddit puts out. 9.5 out of 10 and I’d recommend trying it out. Of course pay if you enjoy it since the developer works hard to make this as great as it is..Version: 2025.8.2

Best Reddit AppThis app is so great and easy to use it has me using Reddit more than ever. Easy to interact on reddit with upvoting and leaving comments. Which helps keep reddit alive. I tried to use Apollo, but it costs money to make it work. I don’t have a lot of that going around since I did just buy my iPad Pro. I also could not get used to using it. I liked the way it looked, but it just wasn’t easy to use for me. I just saw a post on reddit that said Narwhal is the best reddit app for the iPad so I tried it after being away from it for a while and I find that I enjoy using it. So much that I sped a lot of time on reddit now. I’m even using my multireddits to find new posts instead of staying on my home page that the default reddit app seems to want you to do. Don’t get me wrong the default reddit app is still needed to moderate my subreddits, but once all that is done I’m jumping back on Narwhal for browsing reddit. So far it’s been able to open all the links without taking me out of the app or opening a browser window within the app. Using this with the iPad Pro and the Magic Keyboard Cover is like heaven. Turn on Dark Mode with True Black and you’re in for a treat. I also love how the images resize to fit the screen when you click on them. Note: I did have to turn on “Collapse comments” in the settings for this to work properly and the browsing is much better. If you want to view the comments simply click on view comments at the bottom. Me I like to be able to see the full size image without just viewing half of it then having to scroll and then hide the comments to see the post. Just my preference. All in all I expect my Karma to go way up since installing this app..Version: 2.39

Great app with room to growGreat app with lots of nice features and no ads or tracking. The lack of ads is really amazing. Two issues I’d love to see addressed are keeping read posts hidden after launch and showing the Reddit ban message when that happens. Spent a day not understanding why my upvotes wouldn’t work till I logged in on a desktop. — Edit: If you use multiple accounts and a Reddit mod gets a stick up their rear and your account gets permabanned, remove the app before you swap to another account or that account will get banned as well. Somehow they track you across logins, which is something that Narwhal should address. Conservative snowflakes and Reddit mods are trying to shut down any type of dissent towards the fuhrer. But I’ll get a lot of free time back since it was the only social media I used..Version: 2025.9

Clean and fastI’ve compared narwhal to the official Reddit app a few times and narwhals strength is it’s simplicity and layout in its interface that makes browsing thru Reddit very fast and efficient. The official Reddit app is so busy and poorly laid out. With narwhal I can scan more posts in a shorter amount of time. Plus narwhal has single tap comment collapse and automatically marks posts as read and has the “mark all above as read” feature and even a “hide all above” to organize posts better so you don’t keep re-reading the same post titles. If you go through tons of posts per day on Reddit, narwhal is the better choice. It has better control over font settings too. I hope the creators never mess up narwhal and try to be more like the official Reddit app with more flashy icons that are just not necessary..Version: 2.41

Best Reddit App Next to Apollo (RIP)Yes, this app has now gone to a subscription model. But at only $4, I think it’s worth it. I’m not HAPPY that it’s gone to subscription, but honestly , I get it. What Reddit is doing to the third party app devs is pretty scummy. These devs like this app’s needs revenue to “keep the lights on” so to say. I hope to see the day where we can go back to Reddit apps being free, but, if there’s any Reddit app that is worth your money, this is it. It’s the next best thing to Apollo. The UI is sleek and navigating the app and Reddit is very fluid and looks great. To the devs, please keep putting love into this app. It’s a gem for Reddit mobile as of now. I’m also glad you guys chose to do a flat $4 fee and get unlimited API usage instead of the tiers. I feel like if you’re gonna charge people for the app, this is the best way for it..Version: 2.104

Fills in the hole that was left when Apollo had to shut downThe crew behind Narwhal deserve an award and much more for the hard work they continually put into making an amazing Reddit 3rd-party app. Apollo was my daily driver before Narwhal, but sadly Reddit forced them to shut down since the cost for API usage was way too high for a single developer to afford. Narwhal took on a very big challenge. And they achieved the impossible. The app is modern, visually appealing, and works every time I use it. I’ve never had any issues. And the subscription fee is worth it. Clearly states that there is a subscription required on the App Store page and in the preview images. You also get a free trial to test it out. Overall I’m very happy with what this app provides. Way better than the official Reddit app..Version: 2025.3

A New HopeApollo refugee. Tried both Narwhal and the official Reddit app post-shutdown (Thanks Spez 🙃) and neither felt good. Bounced between both apps over the last few months, considered just side loading an older version of Apollo. Not sure how the API limits work with it though. Jump to today, and I see Narwhal 2 is available. Within minutes I felt at home. Took a few adjustments in settings to setup a left-sided UI, custom colors, and a bottom bar layout of my own design. Will happily pay the monthly fee when it starts up to the dev(s). I was an Apollo Ultra user so I’m already comfortable paying for a premium experience. Hate that Reddit gets a portion for their insane API costs, but this is a significantly better alternative (in all aspects) than paying for Reddit Premium..Version: 2.100

Great app and an even better developerThe developer of the app, det0ur, is probably the most active dev I've ever seen with the community, he comments so much in the app's subreddit, this is highly appreciated and gives me a lot of confidence in the dev and the app. 5 stars just for the insane work ethic the dev has clearly displayed with the new and improved Narwhal. Also the amount of one star reviews being put just because the developer was FORCED to place them is ridiculous. You should be grateful Narwhal even exists in the first place because it's pretty much the only third party app on iOS that actually put in the work to stay viable. The monthly subscription is Reddit's fault, not Narwhal's, so those terrible reviews and ratings are completely misplaced..Version: 2.104

Outstanding app and wonderfully responsive devAfter Reddit had their debacle this summer, Narwhal is one of the only apps that managed to find a proper path to legally continuing third party Reddit support, and Narwhal 2 takes a great app and improves on it in almost every way. Great design, lots of customization, responsive and works great. Yea, there is a subscription, as it’s the only way for the app to work with Reddit now, as they are charging the developer for every API call. The subscription model was done in a way that allows affordable access while allowing the developer to make ends meet. The dev is also very responsive and active on Reddit, incorporating fixes and new features after speaking with users. Great app..Version: 2.104

It's great, but I preferred the old layoutWith the new Narwhal 2 update, the old layout I had been used to for years has gotten an update. Great in some ways, bad in others. I never liked accidentally opening my mailbox when I intended to open the app menu. But anyways, what I am trying to say is that the old layout in terms of ease of use and navigation was so much better. I don't know why it's not a style option even now, but if you can keep the retro app icon, then surely you can keep the retro layout and font size. Thing is, while the customization is great, I feel like I would have to configure way too many things to simply try to get the same experience as Narwhal 1, even though this should be added as a single, configurable layout..Version: 2.101

Great App, but has recent freezing issuesThis app came through clutch once I had to let go of Alien Blue. It took some getting used to since I used Blue for sooo long, but once I got the hang of the format I quickly learned to love it. The ease of organizing your most frequented subreddits is probably my favorite feature. Also the search feature is great! Commenting is easy along with upvoting and downvoting. Recently I’ve run into issues with a freezing bug. It has only gotten worse every day for the last week. The app will just randomly freeze when scrolling forcing me to close the app and wait a second before opening it up again. I’m sure this bug will be fixed, but it’s gotten to the point where the app is almost unusable. Please fix it so I can go back to loving this app!.Version: 2.17.2

Honestly AmazingI was an Apollo user for years. While the switch to Narwhal took some getting used to, after about a week I felt strongly that it was a more efficient way to browse Reddit. One of the things that made Apollo so great was that the developer was constantly making updates and listening to users. Narwhal has been impressively just as focused on making improvements and perhaps even better at listening to users. With all of the subscription services out there for different things these days, I get that people are opposed to adding yet another one, but this one is so worth it. I’d sooner cancel any of my other subscriptions to keep Narwhal..Version: 2025.3

Can’t imagine life beforeThis app is a game changer! It is so well polished and has everything I could ever want and then some! Still learning all the features. So responsive and seamless im shocked. It’s sad what Reddit did to API users last year, and reading some of these inconsiderate reviews really made me angry. I downloaded the and was ready to put up for highest support package, and was greeted with a free 3 day trial! I can’t imagine this poor dev profits anything at this point giving out free access when he has to pay up big time, but it was very considerate surprise! Signed up for the top support package, let’s keep this fella in business forever!.Version: 2024.2

Brilliant but lacking one or two key featuresSo I absolutely love this application! It is a great alternative to browsing Reddit. It is beautifully designed, and the user experience is very well optimized. Graphically, it presents data in a very pleasant and easy to consume way. The only feature that is missing is that it’s still forces you to browse Reddit in either a single column feed or double column feed. I’ve been looking around the settings to see if there was a way to increase the number of columns in the feed to 3+ so that I could browse in a gridlike manner however, I was unable to do so. Devs, Please let me know if there is a way to do this, but if there isn’t, it is a feature that I humbly request be added to the application. it would also be cool to be able to filter the posts in a feed based on the type of media. So if one only wants to browse a sub for images or videos or text only submissions, then they should be able to do so. But aside from that, the application works very well. The deaths provide consistent updates and are quite active. It is my preferred way of browsing Reddit, and I sincerely hope that these features can be added to it in the future..Version: 2.113

By FAR the best Reddit app you can useThis is easily the best Reddit app on iPhone. Nothing comes close to the smoothness, UX, and richness of features that this app has. Yes, you DO have to pay a monthly fee for this app, but that is not the developer’s fault it is Reddit’s fault. Shame on anyone leaving a 1 star review because of the fee. I’ve been a loyal user for nearly a decade and this updated version is so much better in every way. The developer is super responsive and is constantly improving the app. You can customize this app in any way you want, the possibilities are truly endless..Version: 2025.2

Best Reddit ExperienceThe best client used to be Apollo before it was shutdown due to Reddit charging for API access. Narwhal 2 has taken the crown. I had been using Apollo through other means but now have completely switched over to Narwhal after adding open in Narwhal from Safari. The layout is done well with no extraneous content. Messaging is organized well. Posting is easy. And watching videos/gifs with new player is so integrated and easy. It is definitely worth the subscription and some. Now with a trial so there is no reason to not try the best client..Version: 2024.4

Great reddit app, with one exception that comes to mindNarwhal makes it super easy and intuitive to read what my family calls “an extremely stressful and overwhelming amount of content” on a mobile device. My ONE gripe is the video playback - occasionally, the video freezes on the first frame and I have to reload/fiddle with it to get it to play properly. And then when it does play and I want to skip to certain parts, the app video player has no idea what to do and skips around, often jumping to the same moment in the video regardless of where I am scrubbing. Maybe it’s just me? Otherwise, when I’m not viewing videos, the app is pretty great.Version: 2.17.2

A fantastic Reddit app! Shame on Reddit for forcing this issue on its users. As a long time user of Apollo, and Alien Blue before that, I’m quite happy to find that there are still options out there for Reddit users who simply don’t want to deal with Reddit’s own native app. Spend 10 minutes using it and you’ll understand why. Narwhal recently underwent a massive update which introduced a mountain of customization options that you won’t find in Reddit’s own offering. The app is very smooth and intuitive to use if you’re already familiar with swipe commands. Narwhal also brings an ad-free experience that you’ll be paying $5 a month directly to Reddit for on their native app. To me and many others, the money spent on Narwhal is well worth it for all the customization options gained. You may disagree and that’s perfectly fine, the native app is free to use and ready to frustrate. Apps like Narwhal are going to become increasingly scarce as time goes on. Look at what happened to all the third party Twitter apps. As to all the comments and gripes about the subscription model, one must understand that for years the Narwhal dev offered this app for free. There was a one-time charge available for premium features, but that was optional. With Reddit’s recent changes to their API rules, this is no longer possible. That is unless you think the dev should be forking out hundreds of thousands of dollars on your behalf just so you can keep using a third party app. Surely you understand the predicament. If the dev could continue to offer this up for free, I’m certain that they would. And finally, if you’re still finding yourself frustrated about the fact that your favorite Reddit app is being forced to move to a subscription model to survive, then I would implore you to direct that frustration squarely at Reddit. Fill their feedback forms with your ire, and do so often. But spare the devs on this. They don’t want it to be this way any more than you do. Stellar job on the app! I for one am greatly appreciative of the efforts made here..Version: 2.101

Loved the rideThanks for making reddit on mobile possible for years now. I like the new, fresh look, but am hopping off. I don't want to give reddit a dime, and believe the subscription model is rarely worth it compared to a buy license once and it's yours forever. However, I would gladly pay for a single purchase app for another site that replaces reddit in the future after spez runs this thing into the ground. I kind of don't want to spend as much time on reddit anymore anyway. Had a much better browsing experience than I would have using something aside from Narwhal, thanks again..Version: 2.101

IPad 10.5 UI to iPhone X?I love this app so much! I tried every reddit client out there before downloading Narwhal, and this is the one that works for me. I love it on my phone and ipad, and I wish reddit looked like it on the actual website. The ipad app, though, is so much better than the phone app. Would you be able to allow plus-size phones and the X to work like the ipad UI in when turned to landscape? Not sure how much extra work it is, but I'd love it. I supported you guys and would really appreciate it if you'd add that feature. And please take care of the gifs that autoplay sound until the app is force-quit. Thanks again for this awesome app!.Version: 2.15

Worth paying forThe original Narwhal was my Reddit app of choice for years before the API changes. Like most, I’d prefer not to pay for social media apps, but this app is so much better than the official Reddit app that I’m happy to support the dev in this case. It keeps the minimalist, unintrusive experience of the original Narwhal and has improved upon the experience with better video playback and customization options. My only gripe is that I have to keep the official app because my mobile browser won’t open Reddit links in third party apps..Version: 2025.9

Great! But can you fix this small bug?Hello! Big fan of narwhal for many years! However the current version doesn’t reliably allow searches within subreddits. It will only give results about 10% of the time. Most of the time the search results are blank. I have tested this while searching words used in recent posts, and the search still come back blank. My phone’s iOS is up to date and the Narwhal 2 app is up too. (Also I don’t understand GitHub, sorry I wanted to report the bug there!) Thank you 💜.Version: 2024.3

Ad FreeReally liked not having ads to ignore, or accidentally select when scrolling. The UI seems rock-solid and the developer is very responsive. Unfortunately, through no fault of the developer, it can't show the same view that I'm used to with the actual Reddit app, which is why it only gets 4 stars. The developer explained that the API available to 3rd party developers doesn't expose certain things, one of which is what I most enjoy. I didn't have any issue with the monthly subscription charge; I thought it was quite reasonable for the amount of time that I spend on Reddit..Version: 2025.2

Perfect for this Apollo refugeeI was a long time Apollo for Reddit user until it shut down following Reddit’s API policy changes. I’ve tried to use the official Reddit app but the ads and layout are downright aggravating. After months of sideloading Apollo weekly I discovered Narwhal 2 and I am amazed. The amount of customization is shocking. The app is quick and smooth. The native browser and media player are perfect, and it even includes an adblocker. The only feature missing is flair images. This is the best Reddit experience. Well worth a cheap subscription. Great work.Version: 2.112

The best Reddit app out thereDon’t listen to any haters. If you want THE BEST Reddit app available with a great community and dev behind it, this is the app for you. Yes there is now a subscription fee, but this is 100% reddits fault for charging devs to use their API. The dev has to charge for the app, because Reddit is charging him for the API calls. The $3.99 per month was vetted with all the beta testers only after trying a bunch of other options first. This was the best compromise at the end of the day. Try it out and be amazed how much better it is compared to the official Reddit app..Version: 2025.2

Really great! But...The app is awesome, but one thing i don't like is that if you leave the app and then go back on it refreshes pretty often bringing you back to the top, this may be out of control for the makers though and thats understandable. One thing id really love to see and i think a lot of people would enjoy too is a folder setting for anything you save, for ex: if i want to save a song from a music sub id like to be able to create a folder specifically for music so i don't have to scroll through all the random crap i save. I hope you guys take requests like that, i know it would make my narwhal experience 100x better :D.Version: 2.12

Might be back soonI understand the monthly subscription, it’s not ideal but this app has always been great and deserves to survive. Best Reddit app I’ve ever used and it just gets better every update. I unfortunately won’t be subscribing so I’ll have to use the Reddit app for a bit but when I’m more comfortable with the subscription cost, I’ll be back. Thank you Devs for your hard work. Everyone that can afford to, should subscribe for the great experience of using the best app made for Reddit, even if Reddit themselves are too blind to see that..Version: 2.105

Best surviving Reddit AppLook, we all hate subscriptions and Reddit isn’t doing anyone any favors. The official Reddit app is absolute garbage, Apollo was beautiful but is gone. Narwhal has always been a solid choice, this new version not only includes several requested features but also overcomes the hurdle imposed by the Reddit forced API situation. This is a great app and has lots of features, please review accordingly . The developer is trying to provide an alternative to the hot garbage official app and a subscription is required. The web-scraping apps aren’t going to survive Reddit’s forced pricing..Version: 2.104

The best home for Apollo UsersThis is the best Reddit app. It’s worth the money. I understand that redgifs changed their api, so now we are served a webpage. Given that is there any chance of: 1) being able to scrub the videos from the feed view again? Currently, the gesture activates controls on the feed-item cell, crowding out the scrubbing controls. 2) being able to download the gif videos videos through Narwhal and saving them as mp4s to the files app. Really a fantastic app despite my frustrations with the state of redgifs.Version: 2025.3

Best Reddit iOS Client Since ApolloEver since Reddit’s API Armageddon of 2023 and subsequent shutdown of Apollo, I’ve been missing a smooth, clean, ad-free Reddit app. Narwhal fits the bill, especially once you customize it to your heart’s content. It has a few glaring holes compared to the first party app (notably, reminders/notifs for activity in comments/threads and keyword tags), but the ad-free experience with clean, customizable UI more than makes up for it. Yes, you have to pay a subscription to use it as a result of Reddit’s third party API pricing. Nothing we can do about that..Version: 2025.3

Great new UX after Reddit API policy change eradicated free appsGlad to see a great app able to survive with Reddit’s abhorrent API usage rates per call. The price in Canada is very fair (despite Apple’s cut 30%/month). Long time user loving the newer, smoother, cleaner feel of the improved user experience. No functionality was lost any nearly everything is 1-2 taps fewer to accomplish. The icon design and slide gestures are especially satisfying..Version: 2.104

Best Reddit AppI have been using Narwhal for many years and it has been my favourite way of using Reddit on mobile. The developer made a better iPad and iPhone app than the actual multi-billion dollar corporation that makes Reddit. Now that Reddit is charging for API access, Narwhal has to sustain itself using subscriptions which I support because I understand the developer is not going to bankroll my Reddit usage… but wishing it was different 🤧.Version: 2.104

Awesome! After the other app I was using shut down, I started using Narwhal. I needed to play around with some of the many options but I got it working exactly how I want it. Unfortunately Reddit locked down their API so now there’s a subscription but that’s not the developer’s fault. It’s a fantastic app!.Version: 2.104

👍👍Gets better with every update. Glad to see steady improvements. I don’t like using the official Reddit app as it’s full of ads even in the comment sections..Version: 2025.8.2

Awesome appI used to use Apollo - and to be honest I like this one more. It’s so customizable and intuitive. It’s worth me paying for. I’m hoping Reddit will allow their API to be used for a long time. Thanks to the team behind this.Version: 2025.8

Best Reddit experience0.17$ a day to use Reddit without their junk app is a given to me. Also Narwhal has better and more features..Version: 2025.8

Best Reddit appMakes browsing so much better. No ads, no garbage. Filtering via keywords is the best! Also the cost is due to Reddit’s financial demands, it does not go to the developer..Version: 2025.10

A great app, ruined by RedditSince Apollo was no longer available, this was my next go to app. Now that Reddit has gotten greedy and forced a subscription model on everyone, I will search again for another Reddit app. I’ve got no issues paying for a subscription, but the monthly costs are too prohibitive. I feel bad for the developers having to deal with this..Version: 2.105

Gigs no longer loadWas great for a long time, then the gifs all stopped loading.Version: 2.17

Excellent appBest app for reddit, well worth the money.Version: 2025.3

Better than the official appHappy to pay a few bucks a month for a superior app that isn't full of advertising..Version: 2025.3

Love this appI used Narwhal when it was free and subscribed when they had to charge users because of Reddit policy changes. I don’t have many monthly subscription plans but this one I will keep. Thanks!.Version: 2025.3

Best by far Reddit appThis is the one. The rest are crazy backward. Narwhal rocks like a moose. Still true in 2025. Narwhal is great..Version: 2025.3

The last bastion of a good Reddit appHighly customizable, fast, lots of features, and no ads!.Version: 2025.3

Best Reddit appWay better than the official Reddit app. Amazing UI, UX, and a dev who really cares. I’m happy to pay the $5/month fee for it, it’s well worth it.Version: 2025.2

Worth every penny! This app is a game-changer. I couldn’t use Reddit on my phone without it. It’s so many orders of magnitude better than the official app that it almost feels silly to compare them. I’m sure the devs would love to make Narwhal free/freemium, but they literally can’t due to the way Reddit charges for its API. I hate paying for stuff as much as the next guy, but for like $4 CAD a month this is incredible value and I never think twice about renewing. Try it out—you won’t go back!.Version: 2025.2

Getting pretty close to what Apollo wasIt’ll take some fiddling around to get it the way you like it, but it least you can do that. Saves me from the official monstrosity so I’m happy. The creator is very active and responsive in his sub which is always really nice to see..Version: 2024.9

Narwhal 2 is wonderfulVersion 2 has so many amazing changes that I was used to in certain previous apps and was really missing in most Reddit apps. Thank you so much for implementing the changes requested by users and improving the user experience..Version: 2.101

Saved me from the official Reddit appTo get this out of the way, I don’t mind the small fee at all. It is my understanding API costs for devs have skyrocketed. This even led to some fairly drawn out conflict with mods on the site and most developers have abandoned their apps or taking them off the store completely. This one still stands strong and is almost absurdly better than the official app. I would have completely abandoned viewing Reddit on mobile without Narwhal. Stellar stuff, guys..Version: 2026.4.2

The BEST Reddit-ingBy far the best reader for Reddit - worth every penny to get rid of ads and have an intuitive, useful interface. And the Narwhal is cute. Get it..Version: 2025.9

Best of the BestEver since Reddit decided to start charging for their API and screwing over most of the smaller devs Narwhal is without a doubt the best app still on the market. Yes it costs a couple dollars a month, but the API calls are no longer free and since the app is ad free the devs need to pay for the usage somehow and I feel like if I’m going to spend CAD $5 a month on this or Reddit premium I’d much rather give it to people who are trying to keep Reddit usable. After using this it’s impossible to go back to the default app as you’ll notice how much slop is being promoted into your feed. Would highly recommend this app especially if you use Reddit a lot..Version: 2025.3

Best app for browsing reddit on iphone!App is constantly updated, very bug free, and has some great QOL features. fantastic app, even better developer!.Version: 2025.3

Best Reddit clientSince Apollo’s end, this has been my go to. If costs a very small fee but it’s amazing! Well worth the cost!.Version: 2025.2

Best Reddit AppNo ads, no suggested posts, customizable. What more can you ask for? Cheaper than subscribing to Reddit premium, and far better for your privacy. You’re in control of what you want to see. Clean interface, gestures, there’s so much to love about this app. Worth every penny..Version: 2025.2

Apollo alternativeThis is the best Reddit client alternative since Apollo shut down..Version: 2024.10

Best Reddit AppFantastic app! It does everything I need with a beautiful and easy to use layout!.Version: 2024.7

FlawlessLove this app! User-friendly with a clean and intuitive interface. Everything you need from a Reddit app..Version: 2024.7

It’s good!Lots of customization and way better than the official ap.Version: 2024.7

Currently the best Reddit App!I wasn’t sure what I was going to do when Apollo exited the market, but I’m very glad that Narwhal remained. This app does everything I want for a Reddit browser, and I’m more than happy to pay the subscription fee. It’s well worth it to support an awesome app with a community engaged developer!.Version: 2024.7

Thank youI really enjoyed using this app. The price is so reasonable too. But Reddit seems to be finding even more ways to charge us. I figure it’s best I leave before they push something controversial out and avoid the fallout. Better for my mental health that way too. This is a really good app. I’ve used maybe 10 Reddit apps in the last decade and this one was easily my favorite. Thanks again!.Version: 2024.6

Way too expensive60 yearly in Canadian. I used to be a narwhal lover, but this is getting a lil greedy..Version: 2024.6

Phenomenal AppDefinitely worth the current price if you use Reddit a lot..Version: 2024.3

One of my favourite appsThe UI is so customizable, and is so snappy. You can configure the app with all the shortcuts you like, and whatever colour combinations suits you best. The subscription is quite reasonable and worth it if you like to have a pure reddit experience..Version: 2024.2

I can see!I respect this developer. The low ratings from those upset with Reddit can do more reading rather than just viewing pics & vids. I'm a sucker that will also pay for Reddit Premium; at least there's 1 feature; My Random, that is awesome. The font size in the official app apparently will always be terrible. In addition to many other things, but I still prefer Reddit to X; formerly Twitter. Update: Loved this app, & if I return to Reddit Premium, I will to Narwhal, also. But, I'm going all in on Apple News+ instead of the mob..Version: 2024.2

Narwhal 2 is amazing. Quality iOS app.Great new update. It rivals Apollo in usability and experience imo. A ton of new, long requested features have been implemented..Version: 2.101

Version 2 is amazing!Well done!.Version: 2.48

THANK YOUSo blessed to have someone save us from the garbage that is the official Reddit app. Can’t thank you enough. Worth every penny for the premium version..Version: 2.48

From ApolloThis app is the best since Apollo has shut down. Do not download the default garbage app!.Version: 2.48

Freezes, crashes, hangsFrequently freezes, becomes unresponsive while playing video..Version: 2.48

Not Apollo but it’s all that’s leftIf you’re looking for an Apollo replacement this is the only decent app left. The gestures take a bit to get used to and the design is just ok. It’s far better than the official Reddit app but could really use some upgrades or take some tips from Apollo. It’ll do for now but if there aren’t any feature or UI updates to make it better when they start charging I’d say it’s not worth the money..Version: 2.48

Narval is my jamTrying it out. I love it. It’s one of the few Reddit client to utilize the landscape width of an iPhone pro max to display a list of Reddit topics and the body of the particular Reddit article you want to read. Just this makes it a great lient for me. Also swipe actions are fast and intuitive. I really hope Reddit don’t kill all third-party apps because I will stop using Reddit as I did for twitter..Version: 2.48
