This interactive companion outlines the history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and how this is reflected and examined in Lawrence Hillโ€™s award-winning novel and BET Television mini-series, The Book of Negroes.

The six-part BET mini-series follows the life of Aminata Diallo, a young African girl kidnapped by slave traders and brought across the Atlantic to North America. In the course of her long and hard life, Aminata is a witness to major events in the slave trade and the history of Black North Americans.

Over seven chapters, the app provides a timeline of Black history from 1705 to the present day. In addition, it explores the historical grounding of both the novel and series in the original Book of Negroes historical document, which identified Black slaves who fought for the British during the American Revolution.

Using images, videos, and interactive maps, the guide follows the far-reaching impact of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. For educational settings, the guide features optional discussion questions and further investigation of the various topics. An intuitive interface allows users to swipe, tap, and scroll through chapters to engage with interactive features in a linear or nonlinear fashion, and gain a deeper understanding of the historical events portrayed in The Book of Negroes.

The Book of Negroes Historical Guide Positive Reviews

The Book of Negroes - thank you BET!I had an opportunity to finally view the miniseries and was completely enamored with the this story of survival and love. I want to thank BET for bringing this story to life. There are so many stories of Black people forced into slavery who fought back and survived. Unfortunately, these stories are not readily available nor taught I our schools.Version: 1.1

Not imaginativeIt clearly states that this is a book about black people. So if you want to learn about other races that were slaves than go find a book related too that( trust me there everywhere). It is beyond me how people can't write reviews about things they already know the answer too. Some of you hateful people must stay on BET waiting to write negative reviews. Get your life. Don't get mad because you don't want to admit the truth. Also I did learn this at school in history books because I had a teacher who actually cared..Version: 1.0

Thank you BETI just love how it tells you about and what black people have to go through back then..Version: 1.1

BONI simply love this app. It helped me to gain even more knowledge of slavery. Being African American it's hard to find app like these ๏ธan this one does a great job..Version: 1.1

Pants up don't loot!? Just imagine!?This is a story of black history that is not taught in your history books that teachers white washed info about this country like the blood of Africans "who didn't ask to be here" runs deep in the soil of this country and about entitlement let's see , we gave this country rock&roll , r&b , reggae, jazz, hiphop(which I'm sure both of you too ignorant people can't get enough of) the traffic light, the gas mask . . . May I go on and yet our ancestors never taught us to hate white people because of it but for over three hundred years that cycle for our people was passed down. So let us bask in our history that we will always remember because part of our history. Everything else about us was destroyed and rewritten..Version: 1.0

"pants up don't loot"?....Seriously?To the ignorant person who wrote comment #4. Instead of writing such a derogatory insult perhaps you should spend some time in a predominantly black neighborhood. You will be surprised to find that as with any ethnicity they are no different than you and I. Just because you're parents raised you to be ignorant doesn't downplay the fact that they as a people have struggled for years with inequality but despite that, they have contributed immensely to the advancement of our society. So next time be a little more mindful before you write your comment. Oh, and just in case you're wondering, I am Latino. What's your advice for me? Put the leaf blower down, and wash your car?.Version: 1.0

WOWNo WET it's called ABC, CBS, NBC, FX, FOX, TNT. BET is owned by whites look it up if you don't believe me, another note no Black watches BET. Now what does Obama have to do with this? You're the same people who drink spoiled milk then place it back in the fridge expecting something different later. It's in the title people why do you click and download are you expecting something diffrent?.Version: 1.0

Useful Study GuideI've read the novel but not seen the series. The material in this app would serve as an excellent study guide, giving historical context to the narrative. I think it's worth checking out even if you haven't seen the series or read the novel. Some of the information regarding the black Loyalists during the War of Independence will be unknown to many..Version: 1.0

StuffThere are other books that I have read when I was growing up that many people may not know about. They came before Columbus. Another good one is Before the Mayflower that also tell about black history that might have not been taught in school..Version: 1.0

Must HaveThis is extremely well done! I love the way that you can interact with the information and I've learned quite a bit with this app. Of course with an app like this you will get ignorant comments, but just brush them off and enjoy the app!! Great job BET!!.Version: 1.0

Beautiful AppI already knew a lot of this part of history, but it was fun to read it again with the visuals. I've gone through the entire thing, but I'll be keeping it on my phone. Would love to see more like this!.Version: 1.0

The missing partThis is so important for everyone to know about. The missing part in all the government, history etc. books. Can recommend it!.Version: 1.0

Good JobWell written and accurate. We all know that early Americans made slavery what it was by adding some of the most vile brutality too it. Not Jews and other Blacks. Conquering African tribes did have slaves but without debasing them to the status of animals..Version: 1.0

Why can't I learn like this in schoolThis was a very amazing app I've learned some stuff on here that was never taught to me in school and I just love everything about it I can't wait to see the tv show๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™.Version: 1.0

Great but...Great app but, I dislike how it starts at the transatlantic slave trade. African history does not start there. I think a great extension of this app would be to delve into ancient Africa. Kemet, South Africa, Mansa Munsa etc. great app though, very informative..Version: 1.0

To comment 18I see your frustration, but since you mentioned "white slaves" I assume that you know a little bit about american history?Well, I bet you also must be frustrated about the conditions that the enslaved africans were forced to endure, such as rape, kidnap, the selling of their children ,mutilation, horrible whippings,....shall I go on? Roots, Twelve Years a Slave, And The Book Of Negroes do not even begin to touch on how horrible slavery was.... The "white slaves" who were actually indentured servants in this period of time from 1492 to the year that slavery "ended". If you look, all through out history the europeans caused the most havoc and in no way am i saying that in no time the minorities hurt themselves. I am just saying that i believe that the previous generations of the present day generations of europeans ruined it for rest of the europeans. The white indentured servants never had to go through anything close to the pain that the enslaved felt.So the real question you should be asking is what about the rest of the enslaved minorities?btw the app was awsome!.Version: 1.0
