midiSTEPs is a powerful and fun MIDI AUv3 step sequencer app that sends MIDI note and CC messages to other music apps and external synthesizers. It was designed to be super easy to use in a way that's similar to the SH-101 sequencer, where you can just quickly enter a few keyboard notes and you're ready to hit play and hear your sequence. At the same time, it also incorporates many ideas from other classic and modern sequencers, allowing you to set control values per step, mute and skip existing steps, switch between multiple patterns and parts, sync and link patterns in various ways, and modify your sequences.

midiSTEPs was designed from the ground up as a touch-based iPad sequencer app, so it's super easy and intuitive to enter, edit and play sequences.

midiSTEPs features:
64 step sequencer based on the classic SH-101 sequencer
Set note, chord or rest per step
Set accent and tie per step
Set CC, velocity, length parameters per step
Mute and skip individual steps
Probability options for individual steps
Set start and end points within sequence
Edit individual steps
Transpose, loop or one shot, start and pattern sync options
Four independent sequencer parts with 16 patterns each per set
Parts can have different speeds, lengths, sync and trigger options
Pattern Mix page with clip-launcher style pattern triggering
External MIDI clock sync with clock shift adjustments and swing
MIDI AUv3 extension support allows you to use midiSTEPs as a plugin in AudioBus, AUM, Cubase, etc
Ableton Link syncing support

Easy to use touch interface designed specifically for iPad

MidiSTEPs App Comments & Reviews

MidiSTEPs Positive Reviews

Almost...The idea is great and the app has a nice, simple look. I bought it to sequence chords on my DeepMind12 and it...almost...works. It crashes after working beautifully for a few moments. I'll stick around for an update because the potential is huge. When working properly it will keep me from purchasing something like the kordbot. I'm hoping the issues get sorted out. Godspeed developers!.Version: 2.0.3

Love this.Such a great app for structuring harmonic thoughts, but I also made a killer Gene Krupa style swing groove with this using some of the length and velocity randomness features which I'll never forget. Only request is to bring it to the iPhone, at least as an AUv3, so I can have compatibility with Cubasis projects I share/send between the devices..Version: 3.0.5

Very, very cool app, but needs some explainer modules!I make a lot of music on the iPad and have tons of apps all linked together through Audiobus, and with MIDI control of other apps through studiomux (app), so one could say I've got a pretty good handle on things. But for whatever reason I have had the hardest time figuring out how to make this app work and have it be fully integrated into my workflow. I've fiddled around a ton and have managed to figure out a thing or two, but it's gotten to the point where I end up wasting so much time trying to figure out how to actually get everything to work. I'd like to think its intuitive - the UI is clean and beautiful - but it's just not...for me. This app is FOR SURE awesome, and I know if has a ton of potential that I am just not tapping into yet, but it definitely needs some walk through tool tips or an explainer video to show you how to control other apps / synths etc. The feedback above also applies to midiLFOs. Looking forward to more tuts / explainer vids because I'd love to have this be a go-to app in my setup..Version: 1.0.1

Awesome step sequencer! This is the best sequencer out there. I use it everyday in my music creation. It has an easy to use interface and has many many features. Love it!.Version: 2.0.3

Definitely a toyThe description makes it seem like you can sequence CC messages, but you can't. The only CC info it sequences is velocity. Not being able to sequence CC messages places this firmly in the 'toy' department. Not usable for anything professional..Version: 2.0.3

Perfect SH-101 SequencerIt’s like having 4+ Roland SH-101 sequencers on steroids. Everything you love about the 101 sequencer PLUS everything you ever wanted from the 101 sequencer in one tidy little app. And then some. Full on love affair..Version: 3.0.4

Thx for the updateLong time user thx for bringing auv3! Lovely sequencer!.Version: 3.0.0

AUv3! YES!!Thank you!.Version: 3.0.0

Exciting Midi Sequencing App!I've been waiting for a multitrack midi sequencing app that is this simple, intuitive, and powerful. So easy and enjoyable to get a couple sequences going. No piano roll to fiddle with is the best part. 64 steps per pattern, change patterns in sync, reminds me of Arturia's Beatstep Pro but costs a small fraction of the price. Great performance controls for live sequencing too. Very promising debut of this app, about as good as it gets right out of the gate. Tested it with a few synth apps, can't wait to hook it up to my hardware rig. I would be in heaven if you could choose one of the parts to be an xox style drum sequencer that let you assign midi notes for each drum part. Great job, dev!.Version: 1.0

Great For Non-Keyboardists!Being a non-keyboardist, I've always liked step sequencers. I use a few, but all lack certain features that leave them incomplete. Art Kerns has done a tremendous job in collecting those features under one roof with midiSTEPS! It's incredibly easy to use, (even for a guy who's never been a MIDI fan.) The workflow is a breeze. I had a couple of small problems, but a soft-reset saw to 'em. (And, the manual is excellent.) I suspect there's a fair number of people, like me, who'd rather be moving along in making music instead of agonizingly pecking out keyboard parts. MidiSTEPS is just the ticket out of that mess!.Version: 2.0.2

AU Support! AB 3 Support!!Excellent solid little thing... perfect for AudioBus 3 as a MIDI sender. My greatest appreciation goes out to this developer for early support of AU! Everyone! contact the developers of your favorite apps and beg, bribe, or seduce them into adding Audio Unit functionality (Don't threaten them, that's just rude)..Version: 2.0.1

Bought an iPad just for this appTotally worth it.Version: 1.1

So much promise...There are a lot of things right about this one, but UI frustration and instability eventually drove me to give up on it. Not yet worth the price, but I think it will be with a proper update..Version: 1.1

Definitely NOT a “toy”!I have had this app for a few days, and I just can not leave it alone! The title calls it a toy, but it doesn’t feel or behave like one. I have some minor issues with it, but mostly I really like it. There are lots of possibilities here, especially working with a multi-timbral synth like the Korg iM1 or the bs-16i. It’s extremely flexible, with lots of options for variability. I especially love the ability to randomize the notes, or the velocity, or the note gate length. Being able to do this allows the sequences to sound a lot less mechanical and boring. The one feature I’m still getting used to is the file saving system; it just doesn’t operate the way you think it does. There’s no option to just save the “set” you’re working on, or at least I can’t find it. It would also be really nice to have a good assortment of scales to pick from; the app provides only major & minor. Nevertheless I still give it 5 stars; VERY interesting app. Updating as of 9/8/2020: latest update allows MidiSTEPs to be used within AU host apps like AUM; this works very well; each instance of MidiSTEPs is one sequencer like the ones in the stand-alone app, and you can use as many as you like....Version: 3.0.0

Very goodWhy did I discover this before,,,,finally a tool that does the job and is exactly what I wanted thank you.Version: 3.0.5

Creative developerMidisteps is a brilliant step sequencer. used to control your sh-101 sequencer via clock in with the tr-808 trigger out? You can do that with midisteps as well. there are four sequencers, and one sequencer can control another. Thank you for releasing an auv3 version. Please release more applications Mr. Kerns..Version: 3.0.3

Finally it's AUv3Just became 6 stars. Incredible must have app for making music. Thanks to tge dev for doing the work so I can use it in AUM. I was using is to pump midi into AUM but now it's even more convenient and fun..Version: 3.0.0

SuperbAwesome sequencer ! One of my favorite on IOS. Keep up the good work..Version: 2.2.0

Nice 👍Such a great quick sequencer for sketching ideas..Version: 2.2.0

Excellent yet simple sequencerWorks perfect on my iPad Pro. If you're overwhelmed by many other overly complicated sequencers, this one is for you. Does the Sh-101 step thing beautifully. Also, I can sequence 4 separate iOS synths at the same time, different divisions and lengths etc. And yes, in each step can be a chord also!.Version: 1.1
