This Patient Controller NR app is for use with Abbott non-rechargeable (NR) devices, such as Proclaim™ SCS systems, Proclaim™ DRG therapy, and Infinity™ DBS systems.
The NeuroSphere™ Patient Controller NR app was developed by Abbott for people living with chronic pain and neurologic disorders who are treated by Abbott neuromodulation devices. This application helps patients conveniently manage the programs prescribed by their physicians and uses Bluetooth® wireless technology to communicate between the implanted stimulator and the Patient Controller NR app. The Patient Controller NR app runs on Abbott recommended devices (as mentioned below) and is easy to use, while the wireless interface provides patients the convenience of managing prescribed stimulation settings from a familiar iOS device.
Some of the key functions available for patients include:
- Turn stimulation ON/OFF
- Select stimulation programs for changing therapy needs
- Adjust stimulation amplitude
- Check device battery
- Turn on MRI mode for MR Conditional systems
- Activate and de-activate Surgery Mode
In addition, NeuroSphere™ Virtual Clinic on the Patient Controller NR app enables users to connect with their clinicians for routine programming adjustments remotely. Patients no longer need to visit the clinic for adjustments to their prescribed stimulation settings. Secure in-app video chat enables telehealth sessions directly from within the PC application.

Patient Controller NR - US Positive Reviews
Lack of inidiviualizationThree issues I have with this programming. The first is that I can’t make notes on each individual program, or make custom names myself so that I can remember if I like a certain program or not. The second, is I can’t see which contacts are active or not. I must wait until I meet with a representative or my physician to know if there’s an impedance issue, which there has been, and it’s been an issue in getting appropriate care. Third, what’s the point of there being an image of a body if I can’t see where the stimulator is supposedly activating? I should be able to customize where I feel the stimulator or where I feel relief from the stimulator. For example, when my stimulator is on tonic, I should be able to customize on the image of the body where I feel the stimulator sensation. Finally, I wish that there was an option for a timer so that I could put the program in tonic and have it automatically switch back to another program rather than just turning off. I’ve had too many instances where I’ve put it in tonic for a period of time, fell asleep and ultimately had the stimulator be off for several hours. In 2022, I feel it’s a realistic expectation of a program to be able to do this. ultimately though. I would like the ability to make notes on the given program so that I can remember which is which, and why I like a certain program. I don’t think this is too much to ask..StephculverVersion: 3.11.1
IPhone XR-Excellent app!I am so thankful that I don’t have to carry my iPod with me all the time. I can do everything with the iPhone app that I could do with the provided iPod! The phone’s Bluetooth connects to the implant just as quickly, if not quicker.
The only thing I would change is to give an actual percentage left on the implanted battery. It would be nice to have the information to know if I should contact my surgeon to schedule replacement when that time comes. This is true particularly when medical appointments are not quick or easy to get due to the current pandemic.
If that were available, I would give this app the full 5 stars. However not having access to see the actual remaining battery level (which was included on the app when I got my implant) on my non-rechargeable makes me worry that I will not have adequate warning leaving me without the only consistent source of relief over the past 3+ years..Parts-girlVersion: 3.9.1
App fix for crashing controller app.For those that have a broken controller app, it is VERY EASY to fix. Contact your abbot / St Jude representative and ask him/her to give you instructions on how to reset your generator. I’d post directions here but it’s way more important you contact your abbot representative and get instructions from them.
I have the instructions and it takes me less then 20 seconds to reset my generator. This time includes generator reset, downloading app, adding generator back in app.
After generator has been reset, delete controller app, add back app to my phone and then add generator back to app. Very easy to learn and very easy to implement until the app is fully compliant with ios15. Generator settings are on your generator so nothing is lost by deleting app in my experiences.
Yes, this is extra steps but until an app is released that is stable, you can get full use of the iPhone app by fixing it yourself and not resort to using the iPod.
Lastly, after you get app fixed, do NOT force close app. With app being unstable, if you force close the app, that breaks the app and you will end up doing above. The crashing app fix is possible so work with your representative..Allen LiebermanVersion: 3.10
Use iPod Touch as No 12 Pro Max SupportThe stimulation device is great. It’s doing it’s job. I’m thankful that my company rep, supplied me with a new iPod Touch that’s never been updated. It’s amazing and worth others to consider and to solve issues with new IOS and phone issues. I wish the company would push updates quicker. I’ve been told they have to be approved by the FDA, I’m not sure if that’s true or just a line. But St Jude, please post a message to us users about your phone support. Tell us to never update without talking to you first! Now: It’s sad to have to carry around an two device just to get this critical application to work. Thank you.JoeSmithFrankVersion: 3.10
ReviewI have been using the app for many years as well. Even before they started using iPods. Trust me, the IPod is MUCH easier to use. No more wearing a belt and waiting hours for the stim to charge. Yes it sucked having to have surgery, again, to replace the rechargeable battery but I’d do it again if I didn’t need to recharge. I assume a previous reviewer had not so great medical insurance. Mine is Medicare and I was given the IPod. When the iPod had issues, my support person got it replaced asap. As far as the app updates go, I could care less if it is updated as long as my stim is working as it should!.JfkratzVersion: 3.10.3
15 updateI have the 11 pro max and have had my implant since May , the app shut down with the update . I was able to call Abbott and they walked me through the reinstall and re setting my implant in less then 10 minutes with the best customer service I have ever received ! If you are having issues I would advise calling Abbott and having them walk you through , it was a simple process..J3knicholasVersion: 3.10
App stopped working on my iPhone 11 after the latest iPhone updateI’m still having to get the right program to help my back, always using the app to check the adjustment on my phone, now that’s not working, this should have already been corrected, I’ve called my rep and he always takes a couple of days to call back, the implant is not doing what I expected, I am really disappointed!!!!!!!.LdlbptpVersion: 3.10
An update for new phones would be niceFor an app that you really need to have on hand at all times, not being able to have it on your personal phone because you got a nice new phone is really annoying. So now I’m back to carrying an iPod around with me that serves no other purpose than to run this app. Please make an update for the newer phones. You’re like 4 models out on iPhones…. It’s time..LDouxMeVersion: 3.11.3
3 Stars for NowI have tried to use this app for over a year now, and it continually crashes when opened. After the last update, it appears that issue (incompatibility with IOS) has finally been resolved. It hasn't crashed once since the update. I will post again in a few months and hopefully give it a five star rating. As of now, I recommend you try it..L8ndebVersion: 3.10.3

Patient Controller NR - US Negative Reviews
IPhone 11 Not Supported - Abbott, it's time to wake upUnfortunately, I've been using this app for many years as both St Jude and Abbott. One would think the developers would ensure the app remains up to date with all current iOS devices due to the importance of the app's functionality with the Patients Stimulator. However, this is not the case with St Jude; now Abbott. Considering how much they're selling the Stimulators and iPods for, a compatible app isn't too much to ask but yet, we still pay $1,200 for a replacement iPods due to Abbott's failure to maintain the app. Honestly, there are a few other companies who provide Stimulators which I encourage you to explore with your Surgeon. I would have given only one Star but Abbott's tech support staff has been helpful. Abbott, it's time to invest in your company by ensuring the apps which control our Stimulators are up to date with the most current iOS and the associated devices. As of now, you are failing your Patients and the Doctors who place their trust and reputation in your hands. It's time for change..ToddMcDVersion: 3.9.1
App not up to dateI’ve just gotten a Spinal cord stimulator that the program uses the IOS platform. However, either Apple or Abbott isn’t updating the IOS to match new phones that come out. My phone is a 13, and it’s not compatible with the app. I have to not only carry my phone as always, but now I have to also carry an IPod touch so I can access my device. This is truly ridiculous thatAbbott can not keep this app updated. The Abbott reps even tell you that “as long as you have an IPhone, you can access the program” but, they give you the iPod touch also. They know that the last update to add additional IPhone series hasn’t been released or updated. If I would’ve known this i. The beginning I would have gone to a different company all together. It’s so disheartening that a company as large as Abbott can’t or won’t update the app and keep it current..Wolfman1954Version: 3.11.3
Abbott Needs to MAKE IT RIGHT!I became very interested in the Proclaim XR SCS after trying conventional methods to deal with my back pain. I spoke with my doctor and also reps from Abbott and learned at that time that there was support almost 24/7 if there was a problem. I decided that this was definitely a win win situation if it helps with the pain. I did the trial and then had it installed about one month ago only to learn that Abbott just changed their support policy so if you need help on the weekends or after hours, you are out of luck until the next business day. There is also an app for your phone so you don't need to carry the i-pod around with you BUT this app can ONLY be used by ólder phones and Abbott is at least 2 + years behind in getting the new model phones approved by the FDA which they blame on the FDA. I would have considered another company if I knew up front about these problems. It's time for this company to do the right thing and help their patients especially with the money that is being charged for the SCS!.DocrxpertVersion: 3.11.2
Needs to be updatedThis app is horrible. takes forever to load my device. Why in the world are they doing updates and not adding more compatible devices. so tired of carrying around a ipod to use my device. i don’t want a second device let me use my phone i already own!!!!
i just can’t understand why they have been 2 years behind on device compatibility. they blame the “magnet” in the iphone max but i literally put my phone in my back pocket all day everyday and it never interferes with my stimulator so i call bull on that excuse. i got my device outside of st jude through a private neurosurgeon and have the same issues with incompatibility as everyone else. worst part is neurosurgeon moved across the country and can’t update the programs in ipod as no other dr will go near the device as they didn’t implant it. and won’t let abbott reps in their office to allow me to get updated programs. worst situation ever. i have a $300,000 surgery for a device i can’t even use..XxShorteexxVersion: 3.11.2
Phone updateI check this app every so often to see if it has been updated to and of the newer iPhones. Unfortunately it has not been. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and it is not compatible. Being that I love to travel and often go out of the country on mission trips I would love to see an update soon. This device has helped me tremendously with my daily functions but adjusting it on the fly is hard when you have to dig out the iPod or forgot it. Soon I hope to see warm weather and get out my motorcycles and would love to see an update by then. I can only give 2 stars in that I can not use it but the people at st Jude’s tell me that it is nice to have. If you update your system I will update my stars. Please contact me if you do update I my even buy a new phone but look at the list of phones first! Lol thank you..HandofastrangerVersion: 3.11.2
Great stimulator/Horrible AppI’ve had the spinal cord stimulator since March 2022. It has been so helpful for my pain…. when it works. The app just randomly quits working. I have to check it daily to make sure it’s on and working. It also randomly changes the strength I have it set on. It is a garbage app and needs to be fixed ASAP. Oh, and now I’ve been contacted by Abbott about a RECALL because the app won’t stay in MRI mode? That would be comical if it wasn’t actually dangerous! The 73 people that have been injured by this would definitely not find it funny. This company needs to make some serious changes on the app before more people are injured. Shame on you Abbott! There have consistently been so many bad reviews on this app but no updates or changes have been made to fix the issues. What’s it gonna take to get it fixed and working properly? What is the threshold of injuries that is okay?.AJennings17Version: 3.11.4
UpdateMy husband went out and bought me an iPhone 14 so I could have the most up-to-date iPhone the main reason he did. This was so that I could receive the patient control alarm that was available on the older iPhones. I traded it from a Google pixel to an iPhone 14 just for this purpose. However, the iPhone 14 is not compatible with this program. The iPad that I have is Ancient and has a hard time connecting with my generator constantly and it's probably the fact that the iPod is an ancient technology, so it does not receive the same signals as most things. Please update so that I only have to walk around with one controller and not have to keep up with an extra controller. As I said, he did this to make my life easier so that I was not carrying around two things. I have memory loss and it is hard for me to keep up with my phone much less a controller as well. Please Help..Please Help!?!?Version: 3.11.2
IOS update killed my AppMy rep encouraged me to use the app so I didn’t have to carry the iPod. While I’ve had this for a few months, the app has been beneficial as I’ve been able to adjust accordingly as I continue to get stronger. Why would their be an app not compatible with the updates? I was forced to update because of my banking app. Had I have known that this update would kill this app, I wouldn’t have done the update to begin with as I don’t do them automatically. Fix this app! It’s imperative for patients to have access and when the reps encourage us to use the app, it needs to work with all updates accordingly. Two stars, because prior to the update issue, I liked the app, it was easy to use… now it’s a whole new level of frustrating..CYfansdVersion: 3.10
B/C of lack of support for modern iPhones, causing me pain.Have to explain the title of this review: since Abbott refuses to update the app to run on modern iPhones, I have to control my neurostimulator with an iPod. Ridiculous. Yesterday my device rep asked me to turn off the devices as we were trying to adjust settings due to growing pain. That was a mistake as I went to lay down in my bed—which is upstairs. The pain became unbearable and I texted the device rep, who immediately told me to turn on the device. But the controller was downstairs. It took me 20 minutes to make it down the stairs to get to the iPod. Abbott: your failure to update literally caused me incredible pain—which is a greater liability than if you simply kept the app up to date. Shame on you. If I could do it over again, I’d choose another neurostimulator produced by a company other than Abbott..ImSpenceVersion: 3.11.3
Limited devices application works with!I have had a neuro-stimulator for one year now. I own an iPhone 13 pro max and the SJM Application does not work with any of the “Max” iPhones due to the magnet in the phone, which can impact the pulse device (turn it on/off, if close to the device for 30seconds or more).
I feel this should be resolved and by now. I have to carry a phone and iPod; too much to keep track of and carry, when “some” phones can do both. I need the large screen, so I guess I’m stuck with carrying both until Abbott gets on the ball, maybe shielding the generator or changing the strength of the magnet needed to reset the device… they are the experts, they should be fielding these issues!
Great results, poor execution of patient interface..M McAllisterVersion: 3.10.3
Software Update - Not CompatibleI have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and my app was working just fine until this iOS 15 update. I just had my implant 2 weeks ago, so there’s still a lot of fine tuning that’s being done with the settings on my stimulator. To do the fine tuning, I obviously need access to the app! My app has stopped working on my iPhone and on the iPod because of the update. Anytime I want to adjust the settings, I have to uninstall and reinstall the app and then reconnect with my magnet. This only works on my iPhone app, not on the iPod app. My iPod app will no longer connect to my generator, even with the magnet reset. Kind of scary that we have an implant in our bodies that we can’t control because of incompatibility of software issues. This also constitutes and unsafe device, as we have no control over it..MoonLueVersion: 3.10
IPhone 13 is not supportedIt’s extremely irritating that this app doesn’t work on my new iPhone 13, which I didn’t know before I got the 13. How hard is it to keep up with the new phones that are coming out frequently. And after not using the iPods as the controller for two years, they won’t pair with either generator. As a result, I can’t turn on the cervical device. And when I have surgery next week, I won’t be able to turn off the lumbar device. Hopefully the rep will be able to meet me before the surgery and take care of this mess..Hidename1100Version: 3.10.3
Doesn’t workI wish I could give zero stars. I use this app for spinal stimulator, but it constantly crashes. I’m causing myself for pain by constantly reconnecting with the magnet bc the app crashes constantly, and then I have to delete the app then download the app over and over again. I can’t use the iPod I was given bc the sales rep put a locking password on it, never gave me the password, and now he no longer works there. Please keep up with the newest tech bc this stimulator was supposed to help take away the pain from CRPS, not cause me more pain from constantly using the magnet which takes quite a long time digging with it in my back to even find the correct location for my phone to connect with. Please fix..Abe.S.Version: 3.10
Terrible companyUpdate… Like many of you I received the we would like more info message. I have submitted this info, info that was already conveyed by many of the reviews on this App. I received an email back and it contained no info but rather referenced a different Abbott product. Fed up with the lack of service or patient care by this company. I will advise my doctor of this issue as well as anyone looking to have a spinal stimulator implant that a unit from a different company would be a better option. Anyone up for a class action lawsuit against abbot to make them provide a reliable controller? If interested review this app and say as much. I will post my contact information then and we can work together for a resolution..StipinsieVersion: 3.10
I wish I could give a ZeroI’ve never given a review as bad as I’m about to give. Those of us that have these stimulators rely HEAVILY on them, some us to the point so we can get out of bed. And yet you can’t keep this app from crashing? Mine crashed over this weekend unfortunately when I didn’t have my backup remote with me, and as a result it’s caused massive pain for me. Daily life altering pain, but as long as you got your money from the company for development, you don’t really care about the patient’s well being right? Shame on you. I guess that’s my fault for hoping I would be able to have the convenience of not having to carry multiple devices anymore, but you can’t keep a MEDICAL app running..1Sunshine3Version: 3.10
Doesn’t Work With iOS 15I just got my new stimulator and the iPod that came with it won’t run the app on iOS 15. For some odd reason, even though my iPhone 6s Plus is running software 15.0.2, it is allowing the app to run. Obviously I’m extremely grateful for that as my pain was excruciating before the device and now is 95% gone. However, I’d rather use the iPod to control the device and not my phone. When will a new version of this software be available to make it work properly???? I mean come on, this is people’s health and lives you are messing with when this app doesn’t work correctly. Please, please, please come out with an updated version so it will work with the newest iOS software!!!!.MamaBear5639Version: 3.10
Abbott Customer ServiceThe previous review is spot on.
I wish I had done more research prior to getting the Abbott stimulator. It is working fine. The problem is with the poor instructions in the beginning. They gave me instructions while I was still sedated and I didn’t even remember the Abbott representative being there. It took a week before anyone contacted me with proper instructions. They then said they “were being nice to me to make up for the poor service they previously gave.” The I pod isn’t compatible with my I phone so I have to have both an iPod for the Abbott stimulator and my I phone.
It wasn’t working so I had to travel to another city on a plane without it. Upon arrival my nephew had to reach a customer service rep who walked him through connecting the iPod to the stimulator.
It took several reps to finally have the stimulation set up correctly.
Again no apologies.
Boston Scientific does a much better job with great customer relations.
I tell anyone who is interested to research all possible and not to use Abbott. Amen..OsselbornVersion: 3.11.3
Unacceptable that it is not compatible with ANY of the new iOS systemsSeems to me this is a business move on their part and I would have expected much more from St. Jude. Perhaps not Abbott as they are well known for their kickbacks and underhanded financial ‘incentives’ in the medical community. Seems a sure fire way to significantly increase the odds that patients will require a replacement iPod at $1200 a pop. Worst patient care service I’ve ever received. The representatives that were at the hospital were rude and unhelpful. Never was i presented with any written info or directions on the burst scs device and now this. Had I understood all this, I would have explored other options. Not an upstanding company and certainly not one who puts the needs of patients first..Ubu19Version: 3.9.1
Disgraceful supportComment after comment lament the incompatibility with the recent ios update. Each response simply says more info is needed and gives an id for the complaint to be made. Why? What more info could be needed? More importantly, do we all need to complain and file the same complaint? The problem should be pretty obvious at this point. Due to failure to stay abreast of developments your customers are forced to choose between accepting recommended updates for our privacy or to have this very expensive, intrusive, and necessary product workable. Abbot can and should do better. If support was actually a priority such reviews would never be necessary..TsubasawingsVersion: 3.10

Frustrating, to say the leastIt seems crazy that this App isn’t up to date to work with current iPhones. I had iPhone 12, not compatible, now IPhone 13, not compatible. So I need to carry around the iPod controller and my iPhone. More than once I’ve misplaced the controller and had to go searching through backpacks, bags and my car in search of it when I’ve needed the program reevaluated. It’s just another thing to get lost. It used to work perfectly with my phone but when you update your iPhone it is incompatible. Now I rarely adjust my stimulator and have significantly been utilizing my implant less. This is so frustrating because i always have my phone and when I got the stimulator it worked on my phone. The iPod they supply is old enough it doesn’t support current iOS - so you can’t share hotspot with a current iPhone. I was happy when I read iPhone was going to be supported- turns out you need a phone older then 2018 .
The iPod has a standby battery life measured in hours - you have to charge the thing twice a day even with very little use . Most of the time when I need to adjust my pain management device the battery is dead .
Why in the world can’t they support iPhones?.Doug77777Version: 3.9.1
Won’t workCome on St Jude! I have an iPhone 12 Pro. You say it will work yet says it is incompatible with my phone. Please repair this problem. I really don’t like having to carry two iPhones to have to run my Stim unit. Please take care of this, we’ve already paid thousands to use your product, the least you can do is let us use our own phones! I can’t afford the $900 to buy an old very outdated iPhone mini when I can use a brand new phone for little $. Get with the times and fix this issue!!’.Starkman 1Version: 3.10.3
A year later and still not compatible with 12 pro MaxWhy was the iPhone 12 Pro Max not included with the other iPhone 12 models last year when an update was done to include them? Makes zero sense. And a year later they still haven’t included it? I’ve had my implant since 2018 and my iPod has to be charged 3 times a day at this point. Plus it’s extremely inconvenient to have to carry an additional device, especially when all they wooo is d need to do is send an update to fix this..Redleg_27Version: 3.10
Wow, iPhone 13 has been out for over a year and app won’t run on itHow long does it take to update the app? I can’t run the app on iPhone 13 even though that phone has been available to the public for over a year…. What’s the problem?
The phone certainly can run the app but the devs are mental. Why have a hard coded white list? The only benefit is to keep the developers always having a job. This really is dumb. But what’s dumber is that you are paying these developers to play you!!!
Wake up Abbott..Jibber76Version: 3.10.3
UPDATE TO CURRENT iPHONEWhen will the software be updated to support the newest iPhones??? I switched to iPhone from Samsung so I would not have to carry 2 devices and now that’s the boat I’m in…I would have kept my Samsung had I know this was gonna happen I’d kept my Samsung. I’m very disappointed especially since there is now a new iPhone out and I’m debating go with it or just go back to Samsung cause who knows how long it will be before the app be able to work on the most up to date software..Samiam4782Version: 3.11.2
Unsupported iPhoneAfter waiting 9 months for an update and for more compatible iOS devices. Abbott dropped the ball again with its latest update version 3.10. They made the iPhone 12 Pro compatible but not the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Makes absolutely no sense. So now more than likely I will have to wait another 9 months for another update so I can use my iPhone 12 Pro Max instead of having to carry around an additional $1200 apple product that Abbott charges for just to use as a remote..AnthonyA180Version: 3.10
IPhone 11 Not SupportedI have had my Neurostimulator implant for almost 3 years now and I was so happy to see that I would be able to just download the app on my own iPhone and wouldn’t need to have a separate iPod too to be able to control my programs on the iPod. So when I went to go download the app it was then a rather big disappointment because iPhone 11 was NOT supported! I have an iPhone 11 and I know I’m not the only one that’s in this same predicament. So could you PLEASE just make the iPhone 11 compatible with the SJM app ASAP as that would be VERRRYYYY HELPFUL!!!.SunshineRobotVersion: 3.9.1
Slow to update device compatibilityThe app does its job, but only when it works on the device you own. I don’t have another single app that doesn’t stay current with devices and operating system. And most of those are not critical apps. This is the controller for my healthcare device and it is inexcusable to not maintain it.
If you are considering an implanted device, be sure to go with a company that is going to stay diligent and committed to maintaining it..MtbosuVersion: 3.11.2
