The hate on the app is exaggerated

The app is simple. It tells you directions. If you have a favorite bus or a bus or subway you use often you could favorite it. basically simple. I don’t know where by everyone saying the app is complicated or too many buttons or too many tapping. use this app if you are trying to figure out where you want to go in New York City what buses or trains or rails call it a day. but the only thing I would suggest for the developers is the MTA to allow us to purchase tickets prepaid for our route. this is a positive step to making our life as travelers without a car easier

Huge improvement!

I was part of the beta test for this app and I’m really impressed with what they’ve made. In my opinion, this app is superior to using Google or Apple Maps to navigate public transit in NYC. It rivals other transit apps like Citymapper, which has more features but I still prefer to use the MTA app because it doesn’t have ads and the interface is cleaner. I love the dark mode, I love the way it shows the subway and bus times in a simple and clear way. Only issue I ever really run into is when I try to search a location by name, it doesn’t always give me the result I want. But everything else, it works great. I love it. Good job.

With update 3.6, app is great !

Now that real time bus locations are back, the apps functionality is back to being what commuters need. I don’t agree with every visual change, but as always there is no way you could ever get everyone using an app like this with millions of customers on the same page. I think some of the changes are for the better, I would personally prefer the old split for specific stops, where the top of the app was one direction and the bottom was the other, but I think that’s something that maybe confused people. I think overall the app is in a great place now.

Love the new app

I’m really loving the new MTA app, it’s way better than the old one with all these bad reviews. I do wish they would fix one huge issue where they don’t follow iOS conventions. If you navigate deeply within a view (such as clicking a bus stop or train station, select a bus, etc), you should be able to go back by tapping the tab button (in this case Explore), which by iOS convention should double as a back button or go to the home of that tab. Right now it does nothing which is broken. Try any tab view on a well designed iOS app and you’ll see what I mean.

Offline Maps and much better layout

MTA got this right. The offline maps are greatly appreciated; i was having to make searches on the web/use bookmarks for them. And the new layout allows you to see all options at your current location at a glance. Favorites are still there, though oddly located under the “i” icon, and through that you can use “show route” to see the lineup of stops as before. Trip Planner, given a street address, can suggest alternate routes you might not have thought of. Thanks, MTA!

Dramatically improved

Very impressed with the latest update - ignore someone’s sarcastic review that says you can’t customize locations you want to see - not at all true, you can favorite lines and stations across the system - it only defaults to nearby (which makes sense!) Seems MTA got themselves some UX expertise — the experience is so much more intuitive and efficient to use — and they appear to have some new dev energy too because updates and refresh are more responsive. This app is excellent — incredibly useful. Accurate.

40 years later…

It has been 40 years since I was last in New York. Took my family and we used the subway a lot to get around and see the sights. Literally could not imagine trying to navigate MTA system without this app. It was a life saver and made getting around super easy. One suggestion…link the walking directions to Google maps or Apple Maps. That integration would be helpful getting to the subway entrances which were not obvious for those not in the know.

VolunteerPinVersion: 3.13.2
Phenomenal Rework

TLDR: Good redesign, very user friendly, not meant to replace google maps, but good add-on app for commuters to have more information. The app does its job very well and you can tell the developers and designers worked extremely hard to make sure all feature are included in a seamless and user-friendly way. The only suggestion I have is perhaps prioritizing subway lines and commuter rails on the map instead of listing all the lines, buses, and rail randomly. For example, hovering above 59th St Columbus Circle, if I didn’t search it up, I would have to scroll a long time to find the A, B, C, D trains because there are so many buses. Perhaps list the services by popularity? Also what would be cool is to see real time trains moving up and down the line like in other transit apps as well as the official website. Other than that, great app!! Highly recommend.

BaebeebearVersion: 3.3.0
Nice job!

I give you 5/5 because This is to reward your bravery. I can't believe you actually had the audacity to push out this new version of the software. Removing the ability to view other subway lines—leaving users able to see only the lines nearby—is just *so* cool! Your software team is like someone who has never eaten a hamburger in their life; the product you’ve churned out has no cheese, and certainly none of that juicy beef. Keep doing nothing 🫡🫡🫡

😡UNRELIABLE! 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽

☢️🛑DON'T download this app - it's very UNRELABLE on arrival times. Bus times are WORSE than train times. Sometimes apps says bus not arriving for 8-10 min. & suddenly a bus appears! Other times, it says bus arriving within 2-5 min's, I 🏃🏻rush to catch bus, but NO BUS. Also, NO NOTIFICATION that there are delays to a specific bus/bus route. Then app "refreshes" to say next bus in 10-12 min. (as if prior bus was never on the schedule). 🤬😤Infuriating, esp. when i'm SHORT on time, have a few options of transit (bus/train) within several blocks, & need to PICK which bus/subway stop to go to. It's THE WORST to rush🏃🏻💨to bus stop, have NO BUS arrive & know that u could've waited a few minutes longer at a nearby subway station & been reliably en route. Older versions (in 2023 & early-2024) used to be 😇surprisingly accurate & quite reliable. 👎🏽🤬NOT ANY MORE.

FitJVersion: 3.15.0
Everything you need.

This app is very useful, and is better then some apps I have for public transit. It shows all delays and there causes, status of every line, and shows me every stop near me, with an option to chose between Subway, bus or rail, or you could even see all three. In my opinion, this is all you would need for a quick way to start your day, or go somewhere. I wasn’t able to find route options. For example if I wanted to go somewhere I dident know, I would have to go on a third party app which is not included in the app. Honestly without that part, this app has everything you need and is a great choice.

The Official MTA App Negative Reviews and Ratings

Absolutely Terrible Update

I don’t know what compelled the MTA to release this update, but whoever was responsible for this should be fired immediately. This update is horrendous and should never have seen the light of day. If the goal was to disrupt, anger, and inconvenience the thousands of New Yorkers who relied on this app for travel, then congratulations because you’ve succeeded in doing just that. This is only time I can think of in recent memory where an update has less practical functionality than the previous version. Opening the app to a tab of all my favorited train stations and bus stops? Gone. An easily navigable and simple user interface? Gone. The only two things I appreciate in this update is the swap direction button for the subways and the layout of the subway tab in the status page, but at the expense of everything else that made this app great to use, I’d rather have the old version back. This is what happens when you design apps for the approval of your corporate stakeholders instead of the people who use the app everyday. Do better next time. Edit: The times for the trains and buses aren’t even accurate anymore. I nearly missed my train multiple times because the app would say 5 minutes but the train was already approaching the station. Luckily I was close enough I could run. You should be ashamed of yourselves for releasing something so terrible.

Adam MellaVersion: 4.3.0
If it ain’t broke…

Why would you completely change the app? I used to be able to open the app, click on the subway line I needed, scroll down and see when the train was coming. Now there are so many added steps. I have to keep switching to my favorites tab instead of my favorite lines just being there when I open the app, click past a service change alert page and change the direction I need to see EVERYtime. Then I have to push the stop times up to fill the screen because for some reason they added a huge unnecessary map on the subway page. Also the train times are gone. It used to say the scheduled time a train was coming as well as how many minutes away it was. Now it just says how many minutes. We have limited time when trying to catch a train. I just need to open it, make 1 or 2 clicks and see when the train is coming. I used to be able to do that. This new app takes too much to navigate. The whole user interface is just unnecessarily clunky and not user friendly. Simple is always better. I never used the bus part of the app for this same reason and always chose to use the web browser. Now you’ve ruined the subway part. The only positive is that it now supports dark mode. I wish I’d never updated. Please change it back.

NelluvVersion: 3.4.0
Looks nice, but old app was much easier and more reliable/accurate

The layout of this new app is far busier and requires more taps to get the same information as the old app/web platform. For a tourist not in a hurry, that information can be useful, but for a native NYer who needs to get someplace now, fumbling through an app to find the same information can mean missing a train, bus, or transfer. However, the worst part is that estimated arrival times are more often than not, completely wrong. Trains and buses in the app that don’t exist, arrival times being 3-5 minutes off, and travel times between stops completely incorrect (too long or too short). Cross checking with the train arrival signs in stations or at bus stops and checking the web app show me that this app is the issue and somehow is working off different algorithms or data sets to estimate timing. The web app has become quite good and overwhelmingly is the most reliable for arrival times. I’ve resorted to using the web app, because while not perfect, it’s by comparison 5 stars over this. I look forward to some fast updates to fix, at the very least, the missing and incorrect arrival times.

Asnow1190Version: 3.4.0
Yikes…

Last app version was 2 out of 5 stars, this is worse. Love the colors, the sleek look, the longer arrivals/departures lists, and that’s about it. It has the layout and feel of trying to replace Google maps, and honey…why? This is an MTA app, not a tourist brochure map. The direction planing is ridiculous, the maps only show a single selected subway line (not to mention it mixes buses and subways on one map), the default ordering of subways stops is downtown at the top and uptown on the bottom (what!??), instead of a nice small grid of subway lines it’s a long list and no longer brings subway lines that have service updates to the top of the section, several times a train that wasn’t on the arrival list arrived out of nowhere, if there’s no network connection a red box will persist across screens blocking buttons on the bottom, I should be able to see subway stops and transfers without a network connection using the latest cached service updates, there are no customization settings for what or how information is displayed….I could go on. What feedback did they use to make this app because of this is the result….yikes….

CardboarddudeVersion: 3.3.0
Too complicated, I literally just want to see times

I usually don’t mind a few tweaks here or there when it come to updates but this was a little much that no one asked for. Like most, I just want to see what time a train is coming. You have to click like 5-7 buttons to figure that out. The old way was straight forward—pick your line and stop and you’ll see the how many minutes AND the estimated time. Personally, I don’t care about the explore button that literally never updates to your location even when you have stable wifi. The status should just have the lines in order, and I missed how when you clicked your line, the service status only took up half the screen with the line in order so you can just find your stop from there. Also, when you finally get to the line you want, I feel like the directions should be swapped . Example, why is the “inwood 207” button start at far rockaway? I understand that’s the direction you’re headed to but it’s a little confusing at first glance in my opinion and I almost have to click the back button each time.

ShanmchVersion: 3.13.1
The new update has made the app much less useful for me

This was my go to app for transit (checking train times and bus location on the map mostly), and this new update has made it much harder for me to get the info I need. I used to be able to search for a bus line and see every active bus on the map in both directions for that bus. I was also able to look up a subway line and see every stop easily for that line. With the new update, i can only search based on the bus or subway stop. I don't always know the bus stop, because even though I may know the bus's general route, I may not know the exact cross-streets of the bus stop closest to me and it requires extra investigation to figure that out. The app is now only useful for searching for a bus or train stop on a line I am very familiar with. Also, when I see the bus map, it doesn't even show the bus stops on the map anymore, which is pretty silly to me. It would greatly benefit me if the search functionality was the way it was before this last update. In general, I think it should line-based and less stop-based. Thank you.

Bring back the old app

As a native New Yorker who has seen several different regime changes at the MTA, one thing remains constant - the bewildering desire to make things harder than they have to be. From the new multimillion dollar turnstiles, to OMNY, to this app…WHY? Requiring location services to be enabled for app usage is invasive and unnecessary. Most of us aren’t ok with big brother tracking our every move and selling our data to continue fueling this decaying capitalist hell hole. We were also perfectly fine with the previous app’s ability to let us click into a subway line and see the entire station list and corresponding train times. This new version isn’t intuitive and forces the selection of “favorites” (again, unnecessarily) in order to get any quick insight into what’s happening at a particular station. As New Yorkers on the go, our trips can literally start anywhere in the city! We’re not always at home. Please bring back the previous app’s more streamlined navigation. I’m all for enhancements, but only if they’re actually going to…well…enhance.

MTAMadnessVersion: 4.4.0
App ruined.

What used to be a relatively efficient way to check the subway arrival times has now been ruined. I will be in the station standing on a platform, and when I open the app and “nearby stops” auto opens, I have to scroll through multiple bus stops that I don’t care about to find the subway station I am trying to find times for. Busses and trains should be separate, or at least, there should be a way to default filter for one or the other. Additionally, large train hubs have separate dots on the map for the lines at the same station. This makes it incredibly frustrating to find the train line you opened the app to look for when you may already literally be standing on the platform for the train. For example, the Times Sq station has dots for each line that runs through it, and it is unintuitive where to scroll on the map to find the line you are searching for, i.e. you may have found the dot for the 123 but want the dot for the NQRW. Overall, it takes far too many clicks to find the information that should be readily available.

Nhyman41Version: 3.7.0
Not great anymore

Yeah, I’ve been using this since moving to NY. I’ve been here over a year now and what I loved about the app was that it saved locations for you so you could tap the app and it’ll go from your current location. I LOVED that. Now you go in and everytime you have to press your location and then where you want to go. There are no save route options. I’d like to point out I had about 13 destinations saved that were places I went to very regularly. When you go to pick your route it is hard to read. It looks bad. It used to say how much time to transfer between stops without having to click it and everything. I also loved that I could actively watch my bus and where it is so make sure what I can catch and can’t catch. I have to click three separate pages to get there now. This is a lot and not in a good way. I know there were many notices saying the app was getting a big change but you would’ve thought for the better…not whatever this is.

CodecblackVersion: 4.3.0
Awesome if Location enabled

Not joking, I was planning on moving out of nyc once I got the update because EVERYTHING i loved about the app was gone, and sorry but the mta app remains most accurate app out there for subway and bus times. If it was this busted my days in nyc would be numbered. this update was a drastic change in user experience if you never utilized location. If you don’t have location enabled, then you should see all your favorite lines/buses when you navigate to the favorites tab. Instead it defaults to some arbitrary manhattan location, hiding all your favorites. You all need to fix this asap. Only by enabling the “only while using” location feature on my phone was i finally able to see my favorite stations and buses. I think this is a good feature if location is enabled. but you should absolutely not make favorites dependent on location enablement. If location is disabled, default to a view of seeing all your favorites.

MadweekayVersion: 4.3.0
Looks good I guess?

The most recent major update does look slick but it's much less usable, a trend I'm not excited about at all. My favorite thing about the app was that you open the home screen and you have your pinned trips and the subway map easily accessible. Now you can only favorite a specific line at a station, and it will always default to showing only uptown trains for that line (regardless of whether that train actually has uptown trips from that station). Every time I need to see this info I have to open the app, swipe up to expand the trip info, and switch direction. Station selection is also a huge pain now, meaning that you effectively *have* to have location access on unless you want to spend 5 minutes every time you want to check a station you don't frequently visit. The maps have been completely hidden for some incomprehensible reason, now instead of a maps button on the GPS map you have to go to More -> subway maps. None of this makes the app unusable but it makes it far less convenient, and when you're trying to frantically look up routes in the middle of a subway station convenience is at a premium. I will probably just download a pdf of the subway map and use google maps for times, because it's now just the simpler method.

Everynicknameistaken134Version: 4.8.0
Inaccurate and difficult to navigate

I agree with asnow1190. I know that developing an app takes a lot of work, but the old app was much easier to navigate, clearly laid out, and the arrival times were much more accurate- I’ve missed trains because of this new app. It is extremely difficult to find what should be standard information: for example, searches don’t always yield results (this could be due to needing the station written in a specific way instead of common names) and separate transit systems are visually lumped together at hub stations. While the new app looks nice aesthetically, it’s visually crowded and it’s difficult to parse out any detail. This feedback is not about getting used to a new app. As much as I use it, I should be a pro at it by now- the fact that I’m not speaks to the lack of user-friendliness. Perhaps the app developers can take a look at the old app and integrate what worked into this app.

RicePaddy17Version: 3.10.1
Why the changes?

I’m not usually one to complain about new changes and I can adapt pretty quickly. But I updated my app this morning to this new layout and I’m really struggling to understand the changes that were made. I use the app primarily for the buses, and I used to be able to very quickly see what stops any buses were at, which was so helpful! Clicking into a single stop gives you a time estimate which, let’s be honest, is almost always wrong, so it was better for me to be able to estimate it myself. Choosing the direction I want to see now takes more clicks and is less obvious. I used to be able to see bus/subway delays/info in the same screen as the stop information. Now I have to remember to check an entirely separate screen. The old was a bit clunky and definitely needed updates but these updates are not intuitive or user-friendly. I can’t imagine someone less tech-savvy than me trying to use it.

K8752007536Version: 3.4.0
App wasn’t great before but it was quick & functional AKA useful

Before, I could just open the app and in about 2 taps have exactly the info I need for daily commuting while only encountering 1 additional screen. The new app, I have to navigate several screens, multiple taps per screen to get the information I need. When you’re on the go (as most NYers are) this is incredibly annoying and makes the app unusable. I used to defer to this app over Google maps for accurate train/bus info. Now it is unusable for a NYer, who already knows the MTA system, and just needs the most relevant commuting info (when is my train/bus arriving). New app is a 4 star if you’re a tourist or someone from outside NYC boroughs trying to navigate and need an abundance of info. Happy for “them” but not great that NYers experience/needs have been deprioritized since it’s our taxes funding this system.

OveritUnistallingVersion: 3.3.0
Old version better

1) the bus section does not have a reverse direction 2) I don’t like that I can only see the buses near me. sometimes I’m looking at routes that I’m going to take later on. The old version was better where I could go in there and just select the line that I was gonna take. I don’t really like having everything pop up when I’m in there 3) I like the old version where you had a section with all of the bus stops and all of the subway stops where I could check on a subway or bus that I might take later on with their alerts and the whole route. It looks like your new version makes you favorite the train lines before you can see any additional information about them and I don’t like this because the favorites should just be my favorites if I wanted to have quick access to them to get more information. If I favorite everything then that’s too much information when I open the app. This was not an improvement. This was a downgrade. If you wanted to keep the app the same and then add that section with the location services that would’ve been fine but you took everything out and now you only have location service which won’t let me check routes or alerts on other lines I want to take later. This is no longer functional for me so I’ve deleted the app

BicoastalgirlVersion: 4.5.0
Reason for all the bad reviews

So having used the new app for a few weeks, I have to say that most folks who think the new app is better don’t understand how most people use the app. For subways, your average users wants to know when a train is coming. Often we’re trying to figure out if we have to run for a train or not so we need the info with as few clicks as possible (while walking/running). Often we aren’t using the same trains so we want to pick the subway line with the least amount of hassle (ie we don’t want to type anything, we want to select among options). So problem #1 - your status page wastes one line for each subway line which then gives a useless status at the right which says “delayed” or “stops skipped”. WE DON’T CARE. Do you think the status telling us a station is skipped helps us? We need to click into the line to check which stop is skipped anyway. Do we care if something is delayed? Yes, but often that doesn’t help us make a choice. I don’t see the E line is “delayed” and think that I will take another line. It matters HOW delayed it is, which requires clicking in anyway. In other words, have all the lines on one screen without scrolling. Clicking the line should take us straight to picking our station which should lead straight to time of arrival. THAT’S IT. We shouldn’t need to click “show route” to get to our station. Have superfluous “explore” and “trip planning” tabs in the back. And no, allowing us to favorite a line doesn’t solve the above issues. Also, clicking into the line and displaying prominently which stops are being skipped is helpful. Notice how my suggestions are pretty much just the old app. I hope the MTA didn’t waste millions of $$ on an app that’s just straight worse.

Don’t install this if you rely on the My MTA App

I use MyMTA, the previous version, for the bus info. You can easily see where a bus is on the route and plan the time you need to make it to the bus stop. Do not “upgrade” to this new app if you like the way MyMTA displays the info you need. The new interface wastes space. It’s colorful, which no one needs. You have to dismiss a useless map to actually see a bus route and the location of the buses. January 2025: The latest update wiped out all the favorites that I had set up. Instead of my list of “Favorite” bus lines, I got a list of nearby bus stops. Please fire your developer and hire someone who actually uses the bus network. I’m thankful every day that I didn’t install this mess on my phone, only on one iPad. April 2026: everything that made the MyMTA app quick and clean and usable has been removed in favor of this mess, with useless map views and no easy access to saved favorites. Terrible design.

Made an already annoying app worse

My app updated automatically, unfortunately. Come to find out, the most helpful feature had been taken away. The feature that lets you see what stop the bus is at or how many stops away it is. Now we are only left to trust the “minutes” the bus will arrive in, which I find is wrong 90% of the time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed the bus being 2 minutes away from the actual bus stop because I trusted the app when it said the next bus was 8 minutes away. OR how I’ve rushed and hustled for the bus that the app swore was 3 minutes away, only to discover that the bus wasn’t coming AT ALL. Come on MTA. You say you want to increase ridership, however you seem to constantly be making choices that are driving your customers away. Why would you take away this helpful feature and replace it with nothing?

The app went from usable and efficient to unusable and inefficient bring back the old one

I really miss the old app. When I had 20-35 seconds to make decisions before, I could open the app, and with 2 taps or less I could get exactly the information I was looking for. Now, I have to scroll and tap and navigate and try to find things and it is labor intensive. I have gone back to using Google Maps instead because it is much cleaner and easier to use. The old app was a 3 to 4 star AP that was useful. This new app takes way too long to get the information no need in the go and if k could give it 0 stars I would. The product/UI/developer team has made a cataclysmic mistake with the new app. If you don’t believe me, check the ratings since the update. Read the reviews. I have no doubt whatsoever that if you just rolled back to the old version, people would be much happier.

Ughhhhh...SO AWFUL

This app is COMPLETELY useless. Why did you break features that weren't broken??? Whoever developed this must have a grudge against people who take public transportation. I can't find anything, there are a load of routes under "favorites" that I didn't put there. And then all the weird floaty maps with street name details so vague that I had to use a magnifying glass to read it. When I click on my train, it takes me to the 42nd st stop. I'm IN QUEENS so this makes no sense. I wanted to know when one of my favorited buses is arriving and it only shows TWO arrival times. I had to "plan my trip" just to get that useless information. I gave similar feedback when it was in testing mode but clearly the developers had their own app dreams and didn't actually want feedback. Does anyone know of another way to get train/bus times? Cuz this ain't it.

I have never reviewed an App before - until now, because it’s bad! I have family members who agree as well. I am an everyday commuter from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I know what trains I’m taking and don’t get lost. I just need to know at what time the trains or buses will show up. The old app worked perfectly fine. This new app works but it has too many things going on that you have keep on clicking on different links in order to get to the answer. I also saved my favorite train lines, and it always glitches and never loads them at first; only works after I close the app and reopen. Takes longer time to load, I think because it has so much going on, so when you’re a native NYer who commutes everyday, it can mean that you can miss your train. The most annoying part is when you click on a certain train direction but in the next screen it shows you both directions again and you have to click again on your direction. Like why click again and again if you already chose it at beginning. And sometimes you don’t remember the last stop name of the line because many of us never ever go there, so it gets confusing. I just think in terms of uptown and downtown.

Bring back widgets

I feel bad leaving a 1 star review because I am sure some people worked hard on this new version, but this is not an improvement. I was a beta tester for this version and consistently left feedback that the widgets are important. It’s very unfortunate this version was released without them. It’s not at all surprising to see all the negative reviews asking for them back though. I use the widgets far more than I use the actual app. I use to tell people how great the MTA app is. I can no longer recommend it. You need to bring back the native widgets. Additionally, if the trip planner is a web view, like it is in the version I beta tested (I have not updated yet, i turned off auto updates when I heard the new version was released without widgets), that needs to be a native feature. The web view is not great.

Got worse!

I can only assume that the people giving this redesign positive reviews are using it mostly for the train, which - fine. But the way the bus information is organized is an absolute disaster. When I search for a bus route, it pulls up every single bus stop on the route regardless of where in space I am. Why would it not pull up the closest stop to my current location on that line? It also won't let you choose which direction you're going in while searching, so it'll just show you, again, every available stop and force you to either scroll or type in the entire stop, which is annoying when you don't know the stop by heart. PLEASE work on the UX here. This is still the only app with somewhat accurate arrival times, so I am forced to use it, but god is it a miserable experience.

Waste time, bus time is never accurate

Been using both the old and the new apps, was having a hard time when it first updated but everything was all good since I already got used to it. The most horrible is this freaking bus time is never accurate! The bus comes late or earlier than the estimate that I do understand, NYC’s traffic is unpredictable. But what makes me angry is that it gives fake schedule time. Some buses estimate that none of the buses showed up, or the bus arrived but did not even show on the app. Making me stand at the bus stop and waiting for plenty of times! Such a waste of time app. This app should be convenient for passengers to check out accurate schedule timing for their commute. What is the purpose of creating an app that is not helping at all instead of wasting people's time? Garbage.

Throwback New York Experience

I deleted this app and have opted for a good old fashion New York City experience! Now I just show up to the platform whenever and stand and wait and pray and sweat and crane my neck to look down into the darkness of the tunnel (behind the yellow line of course)! Will the train come? Maybe, maybe not! What an exciting and real time rush! Maybe I’ll make it to that job interview but will I be able to make the three transfers? Are those trains even running? Who knows? Exciting! Yellow tape and hand posters are my new best friends again! They got rid of the station agents and those eta screens rarely works so its the wild days down under ground! I like to pretend Im back in the 80s or byo strap and go even farther back in time, either way I get by with my street smarts and grit, patience and a TON of underground cursing! Thanks for the inspiration MTA!

Can’t just look at a subway line and departure times

They changed the app SO much. Not intuitive at all. If they had a zero, that’s what I would give it. Very difficult to just check the subway line you want to check and see when the trains are coming. It’s based on location and sometimes you need to plan an alternate routes that are in your immediate vicinity. NYC doesn’t work that way! Problems happen and we need to take alternate routes! We should have the capacity to check into any subway line we want to and see the times. New Yorkers are in a hurry. We need to quickly be able to check what we need to check and this takes like 10 minutes to figure out what’s going on – every time. I need to search for another app. I won’t be using this anymore.

Somehow worse than it was before

Let me start out with: I really want this app to work. The subway is such an amazing way to get around New York, and this app has the opportunity to make it even easier for everyone. But it's falling short. A few of the issues that have yet to be resolved: -Somehow, the arrival times are less accurate than they were in the old app. Also, there's no ETA, only a countdown clock, which makes it harder to plan when to get to the station and transfers. -It takes many more clicks to get to useful information in the app. The subway lines used to be grouped by "good service" and "delayed" so you knew at a glance which way to head if you had multiple options. Now that information is spread out and buried, meaning it takes longer to make a decision about which line to take. -When you open a station detail window, there's so much wasted space that only the first 1.5 trains are visible. More taps/scrolling to get to the information you need quickly. -Also in the station detail window, it defaults to mixing uptown and downtown trains in the countdown list. What is the point of this? I don't care about trains going in ANY direction, I care about the trains going ONE direction or the other. Why would this be the default? -In the map view, downtown stations inexplicably default to the top of the list for every train line, which breaks the brain of anyone familiar with NYC geography. If you change the order from the default, it infuriatingly switches back the next time you open the app. -The app STILL doesn't include live train locations, even though this has been available on the MTA website for years now. I was really hoping that the MTA would improve on what was at least a useable app, but this new app is just a disappointment. Please, please listen to the regular users and make this better!

The new update ruined my ride experience

Before this new update, it was so convenient and easy. Even for elders my parents can easily navigate through the app and find information they need. After the update, I am not even sure how I can clearly navigate through the app, it used to take me 2 seconds to find now it takes me 2 minutes to find what I need. The new features are helpful but I strongly believe the app currently being overloaded with A LOT of information. And some new information aren’t necessarily helpful. The feature on the app are messy and confusing. I don’t think the developer did a good job on developing a user friendly app-remember this is for everyone, not just the young demo. So please bring back a simple version to help not tech savvy people!

UhmmmmmmmVersion: 3.4.0
Worst update ever

This new version is absolutely useless. I don’t want an app that makes assumptions about which stations I want to look at base on where I am NOW. It’s ridiculous. I want to be able to plan and check my lines IN ADVANCE. Impossible… Plan feature goes by STATION & LINE - also useless unless you KNOW the exact station & line. Suggesting to WALK from GCT MNR to TimeSq when there are perfectly fine subway lines to use… It’s also impossible to find your Favorites - why would you hide those behind a search button?! Nor can you get to the lines from the Status page. Trying to check the actual route is a game of finding a station with your line of interest - which might be nowhere near where I am NOW. Build an app for New Yorkers - not tourists!

App is nearly unusable

The newest update has a cool new “streamlined” interface, but it traded away nearly all of its functionality. The 2025 version of the app was cumbersome, but usable. Now, it is nearly impossible to check train times at other stations, or to even designate specific stations in favorites. If you don’t want to hand over your location and identity data to NYC and other governmental entities, it might take 5+ minutes to get the transit info you want for your commute home. Even with location shared, you can only see train times for the closest station in your favorites. Also, the new app does not have an iOS widget, so they killed that feature too. Why, MTA, why?

Previous version was better

Honestly I've been a longtime user of this app, and I feel like the previous version before the newer update was better. With the newer update it's as if I have to jump through so many hoops just to see the train time for other stations instead of the ones that are near me. While it can be convenient in some parts it's still inconvenient at the same time. There wasn't anything really wrong with the previous version so I don't understand why a lot of things changed. Please bring back the previous version. It was more convenient, less time consuming, and even less confusing. Another thing is I can no longer access my favorite train lines whereas in the previous version I could.

Latest update ruined this app

I don’t know what the MTA was thinking with this latest app update, but it ruined basically every function an NYC commuter needs from it. I used to be able to determine which station I should transfer at in order to have the fastest commute. I used to be able to easily see if there was an issue at my local station. I used to be able to use any feature without turning on location services. Not anymore. This app now functions like it was designed for someone who is completely lost in NYC, unable to determine which corner they’re standing on. Now us locals are back to not being able to simply access a reliable timetable from home, office, or anywhere other than a station.

Bloated, not for real commuters update

This update is not for real NYC commuters. The older version was quick and easy to use to get the subway info I needed. This version requires me to take more steps to get to the subway info I need, and the train times for both directions are all jumbled together, requiring me to search to find the direction for the arrival time I need. The map, which is supposedly the main focus of the update, just crowds the page and is another thing to step over. I was an every-morning user of the app for the past 3 years, but just deleted it because I couldn't get the previous version back. Replaced it with the Subway Time app, which works a lot like the previous version which was fast, efficient and un-bloated.

New version killed a great app

While the previous version of the app may not have been the fanciest with the most up to date modern graphics, it was robust, feature packed, fantastic widgets and more. Sure it was a bit of a learning curve to get to know how to fully take advantage of everything, but once you did, it was extremely practical and useful for your daily commutes. The new version that was released 2 weeks ago killed it all. It may look prettier and more modern, but all else got worse or was completely butchered. Harder to get to the info you need most and fast, no more widgets, and so much more. Almost useless now. You may as well just use Citymapper or Google Maps instead of this useless app.

Worst possible update

This was a completely unnecessary and terrible update to what used to be a great app. They removed the single best feature, which was the widget. I used to be able to quickly glance at the widget and decide which train to take from my favorite stations without opening the app. Now the navigation inside of the app is confusing, and the order of suggested stations and lines is unhelpful. I personally find it more useful to have favorite stations than favorite lines—at least give us that option. From a design perspective, the station name is weirdly small when it should be more noticeable. This update should have never been approved. Bring back the old version!!!

Only sometimes useful

Bus info in particular has become unreliable. Tonight I took a screen shot at 9:43 that claims that the B67 bus is 2 stops away and will arrive at the stop where I am waiting at 9:12. Why can't the MTA ever seem to get its act together? Update: the newest version of this app (Sept, 2024) is a somewhat better piece of software. The only problem is that the info it puts out can't be trusted. Sometimes it knows about buses coming, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it knows about subways coming, and sometimes it doesn't. Since you can't know what info is good, the app remains a kind of guide to a crapshoot. GIGO, as the software guys say.

Was so much better before!

Honestly this app is SO frustrating! The older version was so much more streamlined and easier to understand. I rarely take the subway and only used this app for busses. Before it would automatically show what bus lines were nearby. Not anymore. In addition, it used to know where I was and could clearly state how far away a bus was. Not sure if I’m using it correctly, but it doesn’t do that anymore either. This app is impossible to navigate and I end up leaning on Google maps for a better indicator of where my bus is. Not everyone uses the subways. Please improve the bus info in this app, or go back to the previous version. As it is now, it’s completely useless for me.

Route times no longer accurate

Before the update I could see an accurate “live look” at how long it would take me to get from my current location to work. Now that it’s “powered by google” it will show my fastest arrival time as 15 min after my shift starts, despite the fact that I can hop on my usual train and get there in time. This update has made the arrival times completely inaccurate and before I realized it has made me late trying to avoid a “delay” that never even existed. I downloaded this app bc google maps was regularly showing incorrect arrival times, now I’m back to using Apple Maps.

Can I go back the last app?Update.

We should have a choice to go back to old versions. My favorites are gone. User interface is not so user friendly. Can’t edit favorite/commute stations Update after using app for a week of commuting; your favorites or what you take to commute everyday show when you click search and see the history of the train/bus you searched for and starred. Turn off locations so the app doesn't keep showing you nearest stations. That's more for tourists or new New Yorkers. Veterans already know where they're going. I give them props for tracking which is better than last app.

Audiophile 77Version: 4.2.0
Comprehensively Worse than the old app

I don’t even know where to begin with the problems with this app, but here’s the single most frustrating thing; it’s almost impossible to just track the buses live on their routes. It’s pretty much the only thing I really need the app to do, and I think it still does it, but not easily or obviously. MTA schedules are barely a suggestion anyway, but it’s fine, as long as their are buses and trains moving along routes fairly regularly. Bur you need to see them to plan on them. And you could do that very easily on the old app. No longer, sadly. Now they insist on presenting the ‘scheduled’ times, and it’s impossible to work out how to see a live status of a moving bus. And the scheduled times are frequently wrong, so now I’m missing buses and running late because I can’t plan anything properly. This is an absolute garbage app, and a total waste of MTA money. Bring back the old one so that I have a chance of at least getting to where I need to be close to when I need to be there.
