AudioKit FM Player 2: DX Synth Positive Reviews

Extremely well done!I still own (and use) my DX7IIFD that I bought in 1989, but it rarely leaves my home studio, which is probably why it still works as good as new. So, if I want to incorporate that unique FM synthesis at a gig or on the road, I’m left with virtual instrument options. There’s two approaches for virtual FM - modeling or sampling (or a hybrid of both). I’ve got a number of satisfactory modeling options on my computer rig that I enjoy and use frequently, but none of them gives me the same exact ‘vibe’ of my hardware, and I’ve never been happy with sampled DX sounds because, even though many are very accurate, they always feel static or sterile to me. Furthermore, I’ve never been happy with any of the DX instruments for iOS. This app sounds fantastic and really captures the character of the DX7 without sounding or feeling like a sampler. And it is really fun and inspiring to play. I will absolutely be using it in my live gigs. My thanks and admiration to the developers and the AudioKit team for providing a free synth that sounds rich and professional, and is useful right out of the box. I also love that it much easier to pack up, carry, set up, and tear down than my good old DX7 beast! Well done!.Version: 1.1.4

This is the most amazing app ever!I have no words. This is the most amazing app I’ve ever seen! Great job! And also, you have made my day! Congratulations on making the best app! this one should be rated number 1! And also i’m speechless! May I introduce myself! My name is Josiah manly! I am a 10-year-old boy! This is amazing! You should be in the top 5 synthesizer apps video! Thank you for making such a great app! Great news! I have just updated my review! To all the people that out here shout out to audio kit pro for making this possible! This is such an amazing app and to the developer! Thanks for making such a good app and even if you don’t respond, I will still love it and everything is free! Which is amazing to me! But the only thing that’s missing is beats! Except I still love it! You can respond anytime! Love you guys! 3>> WHAAAAAATTTT!!!!??? you guys! FM player 2 is out! This is so Beautiful! Thank you guys!.Version: 2.1.2

Stumbled on!I just got the latest edition of Electronic Musician. The first thing I read is the iOS monthly review of the latest apps. I went looking for another synth based on the magazine’s recommendation, and found this one instead. I have many expensive, paid apps that can either play sample based DX sounds, or create FM synthesis the old fashioned way with virtual operators. Some are 4 op, others are 6+, depending on how many virtual algorithms they are based on. You wouldn’t think that your open source freeware ROMpler would come close to any of those apps, however, I’m stating that these are the best 6 operator samples I have heard in iOS yet! Keep up the awesome work! I’ve been using iOS in live performance for years and have been waiting for this app!.Version: 1.1.4

Heart's a-smilin'!Back in the day, I did some serious scoring with my DX7. How well I remember it shaking the pillars of analog heaven with its FM/Chowning mysteries, its generous polyphony, great electric pianos and romantic harmonica and incomparable, plucked jazz guitar. Now, here again is some of that joy, not only guilt-inducingly free, but to me the best expression of DX Heaven to come down the iOS pike. Ever. It is not a synth, but gloriously adds to the inscrutable DX programming interface some approachable analog tweaks: filter, reverb, tremolo, a luscious stereo widener. Free. Yikes. In a great year for apps, this little one--great-trick Clydesdale is my favorite new pony. I am hoping for some more sounds (harmonica, guitar) a IAPs. HUGE thanks to Matthew Fecher for a great holiday gift. Wish I had ten stars..Version: 1.0.1

Great app, one minor issue thoughI love this app, a lot really! So far I have loved all the wonderful sounds I could achieve and it’s just, really amazing to see how much thought and detail was put into this remake of the classic DX FM synthesis sound, and among that, along with the other music apps you guys have created. And while I do love it, I have had a minor issue for a long time that I felt should be mentioned but, there seems to be a minor issue with compatibility with GarageBand as a plugin for some reason, and I’m not sure if this is just me, but I hope this may be addressed as it’s something that has prevented me from making little projects utilizing the amazing sound from this app. Once again, fantastic work! Look forward to whatever may come ahead!.Version: 2.3

Great Sound but AUv3 Implementation Is BuggyI have purchased and/or downloaded every single AudioKit synth and in general am very pleased with them. The sounds in this synth are killer. However I have to give it 3 stars because I’m experiencing a serious bug — when using the app as an AUv3 plugin with Cubasis the synth is skipping playback of notes. I’ve been in communication with the Cubasis folks and they’ve confirmed that switching to another synth fixes the problem and they have identified that the problem is with this synth. So would love for one of the devs to contact me. I have a stripped down sample project in Cubasis that illustrates the problem (same one I sent to the Cubasis team) that I can share that will hopefully make it easier to track down and fix the problem..Version: 2.5

Nothing free in Life? Holiday Gift!?This Synth is a gift beyond measure. A true “gift”! Unexpected, free and more than you thought it would be. I am a 40 year old graduate of being involved in sound design. I always am disappointed by IOS Synth Factory Presets. Not this time! Only 60 presets, but just like life, it’s not quantity that counts, it’s quality and this Instrument make’s you feel like you are playing the real deal. Hooking this up to my weighted 88 and it becomes even more amazing! I love gifts, but this developer deserves a financial thank you! Best Christmas gift I have received this year. Maybe Santa is behind all of this. Wow, ultra impressive! Happy Holidays indeed!.Version: 1.0.1

I like it a lot, except for the staticI like the great variety of sounds and tweakability of this app, and Audiokit Synth One, but I get static on both of them, little clicky sounds. Maybe it is because I am using it on a 4th generation iPad. I don't know. I don't have this problem with other music keyboard apps. Do I need a newer iPad to use these apps without the static? Since I wrote this review I got an iPad Pro, which has a 64 bit processor. The static is gone and the app sounds great, but you have not changed the description in the App Store to indicate that you need a 64 bit iPad to get a really clean sound from it. I would be happy to give you five stars if you would update the description to reflect the actual compatibility of the app. Thanks for creating a great app..Version: 1.1.5

Fantastic...,.butYo- absolutely amazing. And while I give it five stars and love every aspect about it, (especially direct tracking in Garage Band) , I’ve been experiencing crashing. And since this isn’t a perfect world, everything about this app borders on perfection. Thus, this is not a critique about the app, rather just a friendly reminder to developers of this. An app so dynamic and powerful, I imagine it has a few tweaks to work out in the hardware’s ability (iPad) to process such sonic high qualities. You guys up-did yourselves. Truly a fine digital instrument, worthy of any and all caliber of musician. Big ups, G’s🤘👽🤘.Version: 2.4.1

Amazed and Flabbergasted!I have had numerous FM synths over the years, and I was in the game when the DX7 and DX9 first came out in 1983. The first time I saw a DX7 in real life, a guy had one plugged into a Peavey TNT100 bass amp, running that fretless bass sound through it. Since then, I’ve had the original DX7 (which I still have, from ‘83), a DX7IIFD, a DX5, two TX816’s, a TX7, and several TX81Z’s. I know what FM sounds like. Guys, let me tell you, I am amazed at what you’ve got here. To make it free is a GIFT to the world. I would pay good money for this. The sample quality is stunningly good, and the effects and filters really, really sweeten the deal. The sounds that are here are the ones that most people want, and the original patches are all very, very sweet and useable. This is one of the very few patch sets I’ve come across in the last 40 years that literally EVERY sound is useable. Thanks so much guys. I’m looking forward to your next efforts..Version: 1.1.1

Better than the originalI bought one of the first DX7s when they came out, had to wait weeks after putting down my deposit. It sort of changed my life. I have always loved the FM sound and have bought many of the “soft synths” over the years, trying to replicate the DX sound, some of them were decent, but attempted to get too deep, which I could not wrap my head around. After downloading Audiokits’s free FM Synth app, I finally feel the sound is back, and better than ever. In the 80’s, you had to run the DX through a chorus, delay, phaser, distortion, etc. to get a “finished” sound. Now it’s all here, capturing the right tones from the original and adding the extra touches needed to complete the sounds! I could go on...I just love it! Thank you to the developers who obviously put their heart into this project. Looking for more great things coming in your new Synth app!.Version: 1.1.4

Lemme tell yaSo, I discovered this app after buying my first iPad Pro. I’m a woodwind and percussion player that’s been playing for decades. The sounds, to me, are amazing. The OG sounds of the classic Electric Piano/Rhodes took me back to the release of the real deal. The newer sounds are very inspiring to creators. In some situations where there’s no keys guy, I can open this app and do a little filler and the audience is none the wiser. Get a copy and leave a good word for the people who have created this app. Thanks, Frank - str8sax.Version: 2.6

Fine engineering leading the way to 2022!Still using this synthesizer due to its unlimited advantage of Bluetooth connectivity and the work load taken off of my laptop by running my synth on my iPad Pro and 12 different tracks on my iPad Air I have completely shrunk my studio and with the CAMMERA kit I can plug a full scale synth into this app and still have zero delay. Super props! I will be retuning to work. Y’all will hear from me soon..Version: 2.5

App crashes BeatMaker 3 when used as a AUV3 pluginI love this app and it is a 5 star app, but loading in beatmaker 3 as an AUv3 causes cpu spikes that cause the apps to crash (basically every time). It started happening yesterday and I thought it was an isolated incident, but alas it is not. It happened this morning as I only had the app running as AUv3 plugin. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. If there is a way to fix or remedy please let me know. I am using a 2018 iPad Pro (new version). I have bought the other apps as well and really love them. Keep up the good work developers!.Version: 2.4.1

Great sounds, but has power usage issues...I love the sounds, and have been having a lot of fun playing with them! Just watch out for power issues. I wondered why my iPad Pro was suddenly experiencing drastic power usage; turns out this was the problem! I had my Pro fully charged this morning. I pulled it off the charger & stuffed it in my bag and didn’t pull it out until after 4pm. The battery was at 88%, and I hadn’t even opened up the Smart Cover! Turns out this app had used 63% of my battery usage over the last 24 hours, even though I only played with it for 5 minutes last night (and then watched a movie for an hour). Settings said it had “background activity”. I’ll say! Hopefully this is something they can fix. In the meantime, I won’t be leaving this app open in the background....Version: 1.1.8

Aural AestheticsThe DX7 was before my time, but if this app is any measure of the sonic sensibilities of that synth, I have no choice but to build a time machine and journey to this magical place they call...The “Eighties”. For real though, this baby sounds beautiful and is a joy to play. Great GUI and presets, easy to use yet complete. The love pouring into this project is so tangible, my iPad started to turn pink and flash little cherubs on the screen. Bravo and thank you! Can’t wait to get this into some projects :D.Version: 1.0.5

Saying THANK YOU is a small price to pay. :) WOW. AmazingSo incredibly comfy I’m finding reasons and excuses to use this sucker whenever I can. It’s awesome. Spot on! A joy to look at. The keyboard onscreen is way above par. Usable. & it’s free. No ads. No nothing. It’s not just that it’s free. It’s that it’s exceptional and superior to function than almost any other synth I’ve paid for. Get it right now. It’s so cool! And say thanks to these guys. A thank you is a small price to pay..Version: 1.1

Just get itIf you’re looking for that FM sound, just pause reading, and go ahead and download this synth. So, while it’s downloading... Rather than having to learn the hairiness of programming FM synthesis, you can layer samples of a variety of DX patches, then edit them in ways that are probably more familiar to most users. My rating is based on my ticking through most of the patches and playing around here and there with the settings. The fifth star is missing (as of this writing), because I’d have preferred a true FM synthesizer, or an FM programming mode that I could layer with other patches here (if it’s already in here, I haven’t yet found it). It’s not a complaint, though. Especially for the price, if you’re looking for the FM sound, there’s plenty to explore here, and plenty to use, whether for gigging or recording..Version: 2.4.1

Full featured and richThis synth has tons of features (still exploring after over a year) with really rich sound synthesis. Loads of presets to work off of that range from beautiful atmospheric pads to plucky bleeps, blips, and percussion. I don’t buy apps ever, but the quality justifies the price. Still haven’t figured out midi, but recording lines off of this into ableton really expanded my experience in producing bass lines, ARPd patterns, and spacious melodies. Dig it..Version: 2.3

Decidedly fabulous no matter how critical you may be.This is an absolute stunner of an app! When you see free you might think toy, but the sounds it accesses are richly beautiful, and the control of the offered sounds is first rate. I’ve only had my MIDI kb for a short time, but this makes me want to redouble my time with it. THANK YOU so much for such a wonderful tool! Don’t hesitate. Download this now! Leave these artists a review. They deserve a great one..Version: 1.1.4

A really well done FM keyboardI could never afford any of the DX synths back when they were out as hardware, but had a Yamaha Portasound VSS-100, whose organ sound I loved, and was a staple on many 4-track recordings. This instrument absolutely nails that sound, and everything else is the icing on the gold-leaf covered cake that I couldn't buy. Great app, thanks for being open source - my respects and gratitude to the musicians and developers involved in the project..Version: 1.0.6

AMAZING SOUNDS preset after presetIt has been years since I’ve felt a strong emotion while playing a synth. The sound design here is brilliant. Do not expect a cold ROMpler sound out of this jewel. It sounds organic and alive. I am...truly impressed and surprised. Wow! OUTSTANDING WORK, AudioKit. God bless you all. I will buy your paid synths. You deserve the support. We acknowledge and appreciate your passionate, painstaking effort..Version: 1.1.8

I'd give it 5 stars, but...Still using a lot of older Yamaha and Roland gear and still use my DX7 and DX7IId in my music setup. I'd like to give this a full 5 stars review, but I am having issues with this app as approx. 1/3 of the sounds are very noisy and heavily distorted beyond a recognisable sound and some do not play, at all. Most of the DX7II layered sounds are the ones that seem problematic. I am using a 2015 iPad Pro running iOS 10.3.3. The sounds that play, though, sound fantastic! It is really like having my DX7 with me in a iPad! But there are too many sound patches that are really noisy and heavily distorted and lack that clean DX7 sound clarity. Is my copy of the app the issue here? As it seems this app is getting great reviews and has many users using it. Is there an issue with the latest update? Any new updates forthcoming?.Version: 1.1.8

Falling in love with the DX7 all over againTake from an old fart who made his living back in the ‘80s touring and recording with a DX7, FM Player is da bomb! I’m blown away at the realism, ease of use and beautiful UI. I cannot recommend FM Player enough to ANY musician who wants to add a pure FM synth to their collection. Also, hats off to the OSS community for building this and making it available at no cost..Version: 1.1.8

Wow!Coming from a hardware synth user this App actually sounds gorgeous and very deep FM for free. Lots of paid synth app I delete after trying for 5 mins on free side I do this when bored . But this little guy has tone for those jonesing for som FM on a track while saving for one. Or for someone not prepared or enough knowledge of synths yet to to spiral down the FM lane,,But love the tones this is for you.Version: 1.1.8

IncredibleWhen I read about the charity work that this company works on I was inspired to support it. Making music allows anyone to rise up and feel inspired to just be. Be here, there, in that moment, or simple just being. The FM synthesis of this is great. I’m still digging in but so far so good. Its going to be a long night....Version: 2.0.0

This App Solves A Lot Of ProblemsI own 20 IOS synthesizers and it is very hard to find good nuts and bolts, solid, E pianos, strings, sounds, etc. etc. Thankfully, this app has a bunch of extremely usable sounds and fills the void nicely. It’s not one of those let’s make music from Mars sound effect synths..Version: 2.6

The app is prone to shutting offMy only problem with this app is the frequent shutoff. Also as of recent, im unable to bounce audio from midi when I’m creating with this app. This has been extremely frustrating. Also anytime im in my daw (bm3) and i stop the track the fm volume goes straight to 0..Version: 2.4.1

WowThank you! What a gift! I love it already and am looking forward to all the great things AudioKit is planning. Boggles my mind that this is free and I’m grateful! As a musician, it’s a real treat as well as a beautiful sounding synth. I’ve already incorporated some of the great sounds I’ve got out of this synth into new tracks I’m currently working on. Like I said, it’s a gift!.Version: 1.1.4

Fm has its placeI remember working with the first DX7s in a studio which I worked thinking "these emulations are terrible " not realizing the sounds are there own thing. Now I understand where I like to utilize FM. This is so well designed and loaded with features... there is nothing negative I can say about it. Thanks for this present. super..Version: 1.0.4

This is a GREAT sounding Synth!!!This Synth accurately plays the classic sounds of the Yamaha DX 7 Synth, which was a great one. It has great effects the allow you to take a classic sound and tweak it to create your own even cooler sounds. This is Audiobus compatible, and it’s FREE. It is very cool that these people created this for free. It is definitely worth 5 stars. Cheers to the developers!.Version: 1.0.1

It won’t record in GarageBand AUv3Apple’s stupid swipe-out triggered without my consent and it deleted my long review... I just can’t win can I. I love the app but when recording it looks like it is but then it isn’t there when done. It vanishes. D1 has a similar issue. Both reset settings when switching between instruments and messing with volume..Version: 2.4.1

Presets not loading in GarageBandWay more presets than sounds but I can’t get the presets to load in garage when using this app as a auv3 update I may be confusing this with the paid app not sure but a preset tab is in GarageBand but when selecting a preset nothing happens also only have 4 banks I think have to double check but it’s not many.Version: 2.0.0

I love this app!FM Player makes me happy. I love being able to use yesterday’s sound with today’s technology. I’ve always wanted a DX7, and now I have one at my fingertips. Thanks for creating this. I can’t believe it’s free, because it sounds so good, and is so easy to use. Keep up the great work!.Version: 1.1.7

Amazing accuracy and no latency lag!As the owner of a vintage DX 27 synth, I had to download this app to hear for myself the sounds and compare them to the original tones from the source. They are spot on. Not to mention the other things it can do so well, such as midi trigger. This is the best of the musical offerings I have heard from the iPad yet..Version: 1.0.1

Now is the timeSo you’ve wondered what these guys are about and how the thing sounds. Now is the time to support them and be glad you did. Sounds are better than most out there. I waited far too long. Get the app..Version: 2.3

DX7 Mojo, for free.Just like the title says: they’ve reproduced the “weight” of the DX7 in a way that most desktop synths have yet to touch. And on top of that there’s a high quality effects section thrown in There are better apps for programming FM from scratch, but if you want the DX sound and that EPiano goodness, it’s here and mind-bogglingly free..Version: 1.1.8

Totally nails “those” soundsI had a DX-7 and later a TX rack back in the day. Today I have FM synthesis apps that are great in their own right, and make 6-operator programming possible in a way the old DX interface never could. But when you want to call up those great classic sounds, nothing beats FM Player..Version: 1.0.3

Amazing app and fantastic service support!Easily the best music instrument app ever. The fact that it’s free and open source with the resources to turn you into a developer/creator is chocolate milk with your complimentary donuts. If the internet was populated with folks like these cool cats, the world would be a fine place to groove with everyone..Version: 1.1.8

Great appI love this app. It has really useful sounds that can pretty much be used in almost any style of music. It also has enough parameters and effects to tweak in order to shape the sounds to your liking. And op top of all of that it’s free. What are you waiting for? Just get it!!!.Version: 1.1.4

Sounds are great but…The sounds are fantastic, but when I go to switch in the menu it crashes out every now and again. I will be happy to give a 5 star review if it’s fixed. The one I downloaded for free didn’t crash out and I purchased this one to support, because I like supporting independent creators. Thanks.Version: 2.6.2

❤️💯🤟🏼🤙🏼👍🏼This is a no brainer. Sounds exactly like the hardware keyboard synth, Whitehall is a pricey machine. I love you guys if possible everyone who can should donate a love offering to the developers and or the company for emulating a perfect well designed software version of a state of the art instrument. 👊🏼✌🏼.Version: 2.4.1

All the Cool Stuff-ON AN IPAD!!I run my iPad from my IRig through a large concert pa rig in stereo. These sounds are killer. I had a DX7 and Triton and etc etc and now I carry an iPad Pro and all that stuff and more-editable and save-able and totally recall-able. Amazing work, you guys ( and politically correct, gals, undecideds etc).Version: 1.1.8

Another must-have synth 🔥Easy to use controls, auv3 and standalone functionality, plus incredible sounds makes this one winner. At twice the price this app would be worth it! Buy this, you won’t regret it..Version: 2.3

Sounds Great but no sounds when sent to emailWhen I try to record and send a file thru email, there’s no sound from this app.. every other sound is there except anything from this app.Version: 2.4.1

Better than a DX but not as reliableLove this synth. The sounds are exactly what I wanted. The main issue is that there is not a instance of the app that it doesn’t crash on me. It happens when playing while changing presets or just changing presets period. I want to use this live but are way too nervous to do so..Version: 2.6

Incredible reliable addition to any setupI’m absolutely blown way by this app. Far exceeded my expectations and has not crashed yet. I use this app daily as part of a sky setup alongside hard synths and soft plugins on ableton. Has completely and conventionally uplgraded my musical pallet. Love it.Version: 1.1.8

I LOVE YOUR SYNTHSI have been checking out all of your apps - you are creating amazing synths and the drum machine is great too. I have bought almost all for the apps you have made. I am building loops now and really enjoying the process. I am going to try building my own voice for the synth. Keep up the amazing work and keep me in the loop on your new stuff. Thanks for the musical inspiration!! Barry Sinclair.Version: 2.4.1

Sounds amazing.. but..The sound is amazing, great price! .. but can’t extract songs from GarageBand files because it doesn’t load properly. I can still go in and listen to my song in GarageBand if I reload the sound bank..Version: 2.5

AUv3 CrashesThe Audio Unit crashes constantly in Cubasis as well as Garage Band. Great App and we’ll made presets, however it’ll be hard to get lost in all of its lovely features until these bugs are fixed..Version: 2.5

Nice ROMpler, but frustrating in DAWsNice clean sounds and effects, nice user interface - all of that. But it’s frustrating trying to use it in a DAW; when relaunching a project that uses FM Player 2 as an Audio Unit, either the wrong preset gets loaded or the preset doesn’t load at all. If you’re lucky, you can manually load the correct preset, but that gets time consuming when you have more than one instance. Now I’m looking at FM Synth emulations as a work-around - it’s just a shame I have to spend more money because of this one not working properly. Such a shame - it’s a nice synth otherwise..Version: 2.4.1

EnjoyableVersatile and nice to play.Version: 2.4.1

One of the best vst everTitle says it all..Version: 2.4.1

Doesn’t workI have an iPad Mini 5 not sure if that’s he problem or not but every time I go to use this in garage band it will load up but after a few minutes of playing it will cut out stop everything and says it’s no longer installed in my “computer”. Makes it impossible to make music for me sounds nice on its own but I’m using garage band to mix my acoustic songs with the synth and yea it’s just not working paid for he app too and it’s jus disappointing..Version: 2.3

Fantastic soundsIf it’s AudioKit it’s an immediate buy..Version: 2.3

Greater than ever! This app was cool a year ago. Now it’s great! 80’s sounds? I don’t know ‘bout that... the presets I’m making sounds very futuristic to me. Play with the LFOs and everything goes wild (same goes for D-1 and Synth One). My favourite presets are the ones I’m making because they are wild and wicked 🥴😈. Just get it (them). All hail to Audiokit!.Version: 2.1

So Far So GoodJust getting started but I’m finding it easy to navigate and the features are excellent..Version: 2.0.0

Amazing !!!Thank you!!!.Version: 2.0.0

I gotta hand it to Audiokit …… this one very useful synth app!.Version: 1.1.8

WonderfulUnreal. Super clean layout. Easy to use. Great sounds. And FREE!!! The world just became a better place. 🌞 These Devs deserve huge kudos and all of our support. So THANKS Devs! Go buy their new D1 Synth app too. (I did!).Version: 1.1.7

Amazing!Incredible that this app is free, it could be very expensive. Thank you!!.Version: 1.1.4

Great SoundThe thing that bugs me is that the fact that this guy is free means that all criticism is left out. The foolish review writers who take off a star for every feature that is not 100% perfect are not writing their foolish reviews. Being free is an incredible thing. If it cost 99 cents we would see a few negative reviews or at least some negative comments. Luckily this app is fantastic. The sound is perfect even if it wasn’t free. Thanks for doing this. So many more people will find out what great sound is instead of only raving about how cheap an app is. You guys are doing a wonderful thing. This app belongs in a list of best apps, not best free apps. Is free and 99 cents the same thing? Anything that costs less than the price of a coffee and donut should be considered as free. Have fun everyone!.Version: 1.1.4
