Star Stacker allows you to import a sequence of star photos taken throughout the night and turn them into star trail images or a time lapse video.
After importing you can create the images and/or a time-lapse video with a few different effects.
- Full trails - every star at full brightness
- Faded trails - Stars get brighter as the process runs
- Shooting star - Like faded trails but the last image is brighter than any previous giving a shooting star effect
- Javelin - Both ends of the trail are faded
- Warp mode - zooms into the image stack slowly creating a warped effect. This will also affect the foreground so post processing may be required if the images have the foreground included.
You can also choose to save a video of the time-lapse based on the options used for the image stacking.
Can import images from your photos app. RAW files that have been recently imported from an SD card reader, may take a few minutes before the full resolution files are available.
There are resolution limits depending on the device being used and the memory it has:
- 6gb - 62mp
- 5gb - 62mp
- 4gb - 62mp
- 3gb - 42mp
- 2gb - 30mp

Where has THIS been all my (picture taking) life?So I’ve been using StarStax most of my star trail taking years. I happen to be in Ireland, next door to the most amazing ruins of a Franciscan Friary. The clouds actually went away, rare for Ireland, so I grabbed my camera and set it up for a couple hours to shoot star trails, thinking I’d have to wait to get home to stack them all together. Then I saw this app, and it’s AWESOME! Love the JPEG and MOV options and I’ve been playing around with different sets of images for the past few days. Way to go creating this app, and well worth the reasonable cost. Gone are the days I have to lug my laptop around to see the payoff of a long night of picture taking…thanks!.Version: 1.01
Wow!I’m an amateurish photographer self teaching myself Astrophotography. I took my first shot at star trails last night and spent all day trying to figure out how to stack my +440 images without crashing my computer. This app did it all AND keeps the file raw as well as provides either stitched together movie or individual photos for a nice time lapse. Wish I found this app sooner! Worth way more than $2.99 in my opinion! Great job creating a simple app that is easy to navigate, not complicated to understand and as a result that is incredibly easy to use!.Version: 1.01
Simple to use and great resultsI have been collecting Star-stacking apps for years. They are often complex, quirky and give mixed results. (They might give great results but I've never been able to figure out how to use them) Some have been around for years but don't run on Apple Silicon. Here's an app that's reasonably priced, gives great results and is easy to use. The bonus is that is runs on Apple Silicon Macs, iPads and iPhones. Great combination. A gem of a programThe Star Stacker app is simple, intuitive, and basic--just what I wanted as an amateur photographer and star gazer--but the results are spectacular! There are 3 settings options and 2 movie options, and easy output into jpeg, tiff, and mov files. I considered buying a program that is more expensive because I believe in "you get what you pay for," but this is the exception that proves the rule. No need to pay more than the $1.99 for this gem of a program!.Version: 1.01
Great App!I just downloaded app and was able to stack over 200 files. This is pretty groundbreaking for an Ipad app. I am impressed that it can handle raw files. It would be nice to have a ‘select all’ option if the files are in one folder. Also, I did not see a ‘clear all’ option. Thank you for this app. I will be using it often for star trails photos and timelapse..Version: 1.01
Great end results— better import options?This app is fantastic, and produced great results. Biggest quality of life request would allowing imports from the Files app! Because stacking sometimes uses hundreds of photos, importing these to the camera roll gets very messy & tedious. Otherwise, great work!.Version: 1.01
It needs to be suitable for astrophotographyThe Idea of the app is good but For it to be worth the money and not have things that meet the astrophotographers needs? The app needs manual stacking and editing software for it to be suitable to be used for astrophotography. For both planetary and deep sky objects. Just AmazingI got this app yesterday when I figured out how to do a star trail. I am so happy I got this! I used Night Lapse Photo from my GoPro and it was the easiest thing to do on my iPad. Really enjoyed the photos being stacked and seeing the progression. I am so happy with this app I highly recommend!!.Version: 2.0

Is a real appI was a little worry about the app, just 2 reviews at the moment of this one (08/30/21) . The app is good. I’m trying to push myself to get at better at photography as possible thru my phone and the stacking was a problem for me. I saw the app a week ago but the moon was to bright to take photos so I wait until the moon was dimmer; bought the app ans try right away. The options are simple and the process of stacking is amazing, you can see how your photography is getting form. I hope the developer get more support so he can upgrade this app. Good job and thanks..Version: 1.01
