The best astrophotography app ever!I never knew how valuable this app was until I tried capturing the Perseids Meteor shower last August. I could follow the moon, sunset, Milky Way and Meteors all within a few hours of each other while preparing for my photoshoot up in the high peaks that evening August 12th. The augmented reality feature was super easy to use and I was able to track the meteors around the clock. I had a load of fun especially discovering that the Milky Way would be right above us and I could plan on taking an image of it with all the meteors I planned to capture. PhotoPills Academy has helped me find answers about photography that I could not find anywhere else. The interviews with other astrophotographers are also extremely helpful and mind opening. The PhotoPills planner is a ‘must have’ if you want to capture a gorgeous sunset, moon shot and/or the milky way in any location by planning ahead and knowing exactly when the sunset, moon or Milky Way will be positioning in the sky or the horizon. Can’t believe I waited so long to buy this appI had originally been using a cheap ($3) app that had a bare bones version of the sun tracker. But I got frustrated by that app’s poor design and heard a few photographers mention PhotoPills. Spent the $10 and have already used it to plan & execute some amazing astrophotos of the Milky Way. There are so many features and tools packed into there it’s crazy, yet the UI is super intuitive and easy to use. All of that takes a lot of work, $10 is an absolute steal! Think about this: if this app was somehow converted into a standalone gadget, you’d find photography stores selling it for $100, minimum. The planner tool is amazing, with the ability to view a map and layer on the precise positions of the sun, moon, Milky Way galactic center (& arm), various meteor showers, eclipses, custom calculated shadow lengths for objects of any height at any elevation. I can’t believe how useful this app is!I don’t remember what led me to purchase this app. I’m not a big time photographer, the only cameras I own are my iPhone, iPad, and a GoPro. However this app has helped me take incredible pictures that I would never have imagined using the tools within. From calculating quick time lapse intervals, best times to take pictures of my flower garden, helpful information on the position of the sun to help you get the best shadows and lighting. This app has made me a better photographer. I was using it this morning planning a quick shot of a park near me that has a beautiful cliff and realized how useful this app is and how without thinking I go to it. I don’t remember purchasing it, I don’t remember what it cost. But whatever it was it’s worth it enough to interrupt my photography planning session to leave a review. Necessary tool for photographersI’ve had this app for a while now and had just dabbled with it. Now after deciding to get serious with my landscape photography and having lost nearly 20,000 images due to not backing up systematically I’m once again building my photo collection. As I’m planning several locations I realize how complete this app is. I’ve used Light Trac, (which I like), but Photopills seems much more complete. That being said I strongly suggest going to their website and downloading the user guide so you can get the most out of this program. As photographers we must be fluent with not only our photography gear, but with image processing software, etc. Photopills is 1 more important and helpful tool to learn how to use for exceptional photographs rather than just ordinary pictures. Incredible Information for a beginnerI am a beginner astrophotographer and I find this app primary to my ability to plan for shoots! Like most photographers the weather dictates if and when I can shoot so being able to plan is crucial to getting the projects I am striving to finish! I found PhotoPills because I was searching for an app or site that showed me the exact heading (or azimuth) the sun would set at and I could find no real information. I seen a post by a fellow Astrophotographer and ever since then I have been off to the races! Seriously speaking...the $$ you spend on this app is well worth it considering all of the apps this app makes obsolete. The sheer amount of time is worth the few bucks they charge! Please don't turn into Adobe!First and foremost I'm a software user and the main reason I use Apple products is because of stability, they just work and I don't have to worry about them. One of the tools that I use the most in this app is the DoF Calculator. There is a serious problem with this part of the app that literally freezes the app with no response. There's been over three updates since I noticed this problem and it still is a reoccurring problem. The thing that confused me more is that these newer features are being put into the application with this problem still existing! I've deleted the app and reinstalled it and it still does not fix the problems that keep on reoccurring. I really am about stability first in features second. At $10 people will complain about having to pay but seriously I bet within one year I’ll be paying less than .01¢ per use. I just was referred to this app by another professional and I instantly downloaded. We agreed that this tool would be worth paying for the type of info it provides every time you’re on a shoot. The amount of camera types it has and can calculate settings, distance, and even an AR preview of your subjects proper location at the set f/stop, lens mm, and camera mm along with a 35mm equivalent. Life alteringI’m an aspiring/amateur photographer, still learning about ALL the aspects of photography, from eye to camera to scene, and this app has changed EVERYTHING. I’m learning how to be more creative with shots, how to make a solid plan and even how to use my camera. Incredibly useful, but sometimes confusingIf you’re a photographer, this is one of the most essential apps you can have on your phone, bar none. My only real complaints are that the user interface can be confusing at times. For example, I can never seem to remember how to add a location in the planner “pill”, which often has me going to The Photographers Ephemeris to find what I need. Besides UI tweaks (can we please have the ability to customize the pills order? 🙏), I would love to see an Apple Watch app! I envision customizable watch complications and small functions like long exposure timers and DOF & exposure calculators. It’d be great to see the sun & moon timelines in the large complication slot! The absolute best photography tool on the planet!!WOW, BRAVO, I think this is the single coolest app I have ever used on so many levels. It is wonderfully laid out and easy to navigate and use. Incredible work from these guys to make this app.I don’t think on the entire Apple store, there are lots of apps that are not only well done but hyper technical and well designed as this. I have nearly 700 apps and the only equivalent is some astronomy, physics and about the human body apps that compare to this. $10 is ridiculously cheap to own this app ! Incredible App!I’m a complete beginner. Know nothing about astrophotography but wanted to attempt to take a photo of the Milky Way with my new iPhone 12 Pro Max. Timelapse app in PhotopillSo far this app has been great. One minor change for the Timelapse tool is to change it to delay between shots and the duration of the exposure instead of adding both in the tool. My intervalometer has the delay and exposure time separate which works great and it's intuitive. Also add to your list the best exposure time for Milky Way pictures based on your camera, lens, and f stop plus iso settings. The best outdoor Photography app you could ever haveI cannot recommend PhotoPills enough! I LOVE this API'm a landscape photographer and I've been using this app for a long time. You can see my work on instagram (joshua_p_crites) or 500px. This AP has saved me many hours of wasted trips. At first it was a little intimidating, but after watching a tutorial and using it a little bit, I love it. UPDATE (Early October 2017): DoF Table is broken again on the iPhone 7 Plus. Contracted developer. They have confirmed and will be putting out an update to resolve as soon as possible. Response to developer (May 2017): Thank you for your comments. I very much look forward to the DoF chart bug being fixed in the next release. I'll be delighted to update my rating to five stars. The DoF chart and the Sun timeline are the only features that I use (currently, being a new user) and I haven't had any issues with the latter. In terms of app updates, two months is not what I'd personally consider frequent; many great apps release updates every 2 or 4 weeks. However, for PhotoPills, I'd be perfectly happy with a release cadence of every two months for features if you were willing to issue major bug fix releases sooner, off-schedule. Right now, my situation is that I paid $10 for what I know is a great app (not to mention that I paid another $10 for the app, having gifted it to my sister), but I can't use the one major feature that I care most about now, until perhaps two months from now, assuming it's even fixed for the upcoming release. Update (May 2017): I've increased my review from one to three stars as the developer seems to be interested in the issues that I'm having and is trying to help. Unfortunately, this is not a memory issue. I've erased and reinstalled the app, restarted the iPhone, force quit all open apps except this one and I'm still getting unreliable behavior from the app, unfortunately. For example, if I launch the app, go to Pills, then DoF Table, select a cell, then tap Visual, the app hangs and selecting "Done" does not dismiss the visualization. Best planning toolSo much power for so little money. I use this all the time. I have months of plans set up and ready to review. Really saves time scouting our locations. I set up plans first, then I try to get out and scout the location ahead of shooting and use the AR view to make sure I’m in the right spot. Essential for MW photographyI’m a wedding photographer and I do a lot of night/Milky Way shoots with couples. PhotoPills is absolutely essential for what I do. Widget drains batteryLove the app hands down. Just one thing I want to mention with iOS 14 is this app in the widget sucked my battery down from 100% to 25% in 4 hours and heated up my phone. Also the phone would barely charge with the widget active at 20% in 1.5 hours. Turned the widget off and the phone is charging way faster, not hot and the battery lasts like it normally does. There are a tonne of apparently helpful videos, but they are all done by Raf, and I can't understand the language he is speaking. A learning tool must!Yes the interface could be more refined but after searching and buying between 10-20 photography apps this is now the only one I use. It does it all! To the dev please add hold and scroll to the various value data field. Lots of options, but none of them simpleWill say it looks like an app that if you had several hours to spend could be useful. But literally all I want is a better picture of the moon. Looked at the guide, got disgusted with it and its condescending tone, and deleted the app. You’ve already got my money, and you can keep it. It would be nice to have a function that is just camera with a drop box of toggle-able features. After taking a picture, have things that say how you could change each step and how changing one feature would likely change the photo. So say I took a picture of the moon. There would be a box labeled exposure time. I click on the box and it says how increasing or decreasing the ET may change the picture..Strategizer2011Version: 2.13.8

So confusingThis app is so confusing to use. Yes, I know there are helpful videos that the devs release regularly. But sometimes I'll forget how to do something even after I've watched a video. And having the users watch a video to be able to understand the app is a UX failure. This app is powerful and really awesome with what it can accomplish. I just really wish they made it easier to navigate and use. For example, when in the 'planner' area of the app, there are all these icons with the pin that I have no idea what they mean. I have to tap around and try to blindly figure out what each one does. Could a label be added underneath? I know the font would be small. Perhaps there's a better solution. Wealth of information, very hard to useThis app provides an incredible amount of information about position is sun and moon at any time. It also shows direction of the Milky Way and meteor showers. Very useful for planning specific photographs. The user interface is befuddling. There’s no in-app help, and it’s not intuitive at all. I’ve watched the online videos and read the web pages. That can walk you through doing a specific thing, but good luck remembering the next time. It’s just too obtuse. Does not help with the basicsFor example, I have dropped the red pin but what if I don’t have a place to plant the black pin? Also, in Night AIR, the app had me looking in the wrong direction! If my friend didn’t have excellent vision, I never would have pointed my camera in the correct direction of the Milky Way. The app, even having watched all the videos on how to photograph the Milky Way, doesn’t help figure out the the exposure settings—unless I only want to photograph meteor showers or an eclipse. I am also uncomfortable with all the ‘experts’ being men; have not women also used your app?.JcatherwVersion: 2.12.5

Great features, but impossibleI will put in my coordinates to plan a shot. Send them to the planner only for it to override to my current location. I am unable to just start from the planner and set my location other than dragging the pin. Not very ideal when I know the gps coordinates I want to enter. The AR features are cool, but be sure to bring a notebook and pen to write down the information on the shot you want to take because the app is little more than just a tool to provide insight on when you might want to take a shot..KbtoystoreVersion: 2.11.8

Greedy… Never enoughWell, I find this interesting we pay good money to purchase an app. Then the advertising and rabbit holes start, you can’t get the user manual without agreeing to the release of your information to third parties, every time you try to learn how to use the app you get sent down rabbit holes of YouTube videos and then you have to go back to the beginning and work your way back through to where you were (there is no tutorial built into the app you need Wi-Fi/cellular). I’ve never been more frustrated with an app ever.
