Apple Music Classical App Comments & Reviews

Apple Music Classical Positive Reviews

A most welcome appYou might ask why do you need another app for a genre of music? Classical music has something that no other genre has to deal with when searching for music: you have composers and you have the artists that perform the music. And if I search up Led Zeppelin, I will pretty much just got all of the Led Zeppelin albums. But if I search up Beethoven, there are hundreds of different albums performed by hundreds of different performers. The Beatles perform let it be. But there are hundreds of performers playing Beethoven’s piano sonatas, hundreds of orchestras playing, Beethoven, symphonies, etc. on the original Apple Music app, searching for a composer was hard because it was very artist centric. It was hard to find albums by composers like Beethoven, because I would most like at albums by artists, and then the algorithm would feed me more albums by that artist. This new app is very composer centric. It’s also very genre centric because in classical music, you have baroque classical romantic, 20th century, etc. If you like classical music, this app is well worth it. There are only two things that I would change: one as I noticed when I go to delete albums off the original app. They also delete on the classical app. I would like to have the classical app, dedicated only to classical albums, and be able to delete them on my other app. And the last thing is some classical pieces are very long. Symphonies, operas, and other pieces could be up to an hour. Sometimes you don’t have time to sit through the whole thing. It would be awesome if there was a way to book mark your place, so you can go back later and pick up from where you left off. Other than that, I love the app, and I am having fun learning how to use it..Version: 1.0.1

An okay app yet imperfections are presentI am a huge fan of the genre classical music, as a music student this app is amazing for helping me find artists and pieces. However, for decades now classical art has ignored the contributions of many minority groups such as people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. This apps suggestions for time periods stretching from the medieval era of western music to the 21st century feature an alarming amount of music from straight white males and disregard or flat out fail to feature works from artists of different backgrounds. As a musician studying these eras of music currently it’s our duty to consider these artists that contribute to the genre. Going forward I hope that the broad spectrum of “classical” music apple plans to feature a wider range of artists than our typical musicians from the western canon. Stylistically the app works well and features that classic apple design philosophy. However, you can definitely tell this app was designed by individuals who don’t have too much knowledge on classical music. Credit where credit is due, this app does a far better job of classifying music based on their titles and publications but fails in other regards. At this time it feels a little cliché with its design as THE classical music app. While this app is still in its infancy I hope that moving forward Apple will be more motivated by classical listeners, artists and experts rather than a stereotypical understanding of the incredibly broad genre that is classical music..Version: 1.0.1

A Pleasure for Classical Music LoversThis is SO much better for classical music fans than the regular Apple Music app. Thank you very much for doing this. Love that there are curated playlists, recommended new albums with some editorial info about them (would love even more of that). Playlists and “track by track” feature are a pleasure (adds a lot to hear Yo Yo Ma explain something about what he’s playing and also share his playlist with you). Over time I hope you add much more of that. A couple suggestions: an iPad version would be great; also it can be a bit overwhelming when looking for a particular work to scroll through all the performance options. In addition to sorting by release date or popularity, how about an option to put artists that I’ve already starred as favorites first since those are who I am most likely to pick. Also, would love to shuffle my classical library or playlist by work rather than track or album (i.e., all movements of a piece in order without listening to the whole album, then move to the next). Overall, a great addition I have hope for for a long time. Thank you..Version: 1.0.1

Bring it to the iPadI was very excited to see that Apple was putting out a music app devoted to classical music. I immediately clicked on the pre-order button. I am disappointed with Apple. This app is an iPhone only app. It never occurred to me that it would not be designed for the iPad. I never checked on that. I love my iPads. Yes I have more than one. Different ages and different sizes. This morning I was on my iPad when the notification came through that the new app was available. I opened it up and I thought something was wrong. Why did it look so small? (Like an iPhone only app.) I hit the the arrows to enlarge the image. At least there is that. Why wouldn’t Apple make the app for the iPad. There is already the Music app for the iPad. There are many wonderful features of the new Classical Music app. I love that the title of the music (or movement) is displayed in a readable format. This would be better on the iPad. I love the information button that gives complete information about the work, catalog number, artists (yes, plural!) label, and release date. This would be better on the iPad. I haven’t finished exploring the app. I look forward to doing just that. However, I am forced to ask why it is not an iPad app as well. iPad is a well loved and used Apple creation. Music is their baby. This is all their property and work. Why is Apple neglecting the iPad here? I love Apple because they take the time to do things right. I hope that is what is happening here. They put the iPhone version first and the iPad will follow. For now this is a 2-star app. It could be 5-stars. Bring it to the iPad..Version: 1.0.1

So thankful! After a rough couple of weeks, I’ve just been resting and listening to classical music today on a stereo pair of HomePod minis. The sound quality is amazing. It’s so easy to find the music I want to hear. I listened to my dad’s favorite piece The Moldau by Smetana. Then I found a whole group of melancholy string pieces that met me right where I was emotionally. Beautiful music can be so healing! I love the curated lists. I recently discovered the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and I love listening to everything on his playlist in addition to his own recordings. There’s something touching to me that Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring was first on his list as it is one of my favorites. As a teenager, I remember going to Borders Bookstore and picking out tapes and cds of classical music. Some of the same recordings I loved then are in the library. I almost can’t wrap my head around how amazing it is to have a curated collection of the world’s best classical music recordings so easy to access from my phone. Feeling grateful for the ease of bringing beautiful classical music into my life!.Version: 1.0.1

The best music app for the classical and art music enthusiast. The design, editorials, and easy-to navigate UX make this the best app for baroque, classical, romantic, modern, contemporary and experimental art music. Cataloguing, organizing, labeling and sorting this type of music is a challenge for most apps. The way these types of works need to be organized requires a special taxonomy that spans across composers, performers, conductors, institutions, recording dates and more. This app seamlessly connects the dots across the types of information and music you’re trying to find. Where other apps are restricted to the basic schema of “Artist>Album>Song” this app can help you find everything from the very first recordings of Beethoven’s late string quartets, all the way to the latest star performers of today. It will also do a great job of highlighting past performers that had impactful interpretations of composers we all love - like JS Bach you’ll easily find Yo-Yo Ma, Karl Richter, and Glenn Gould and so on. I genuinely feel like this is the best app on my phone. I am so grateful for it..Version: 3.1.1

Grateful for AppleLove the app and the content. I will be listening to a lot more music now. Also, I highly recommend the 9-part “Story of Classical” included in the app. It’s a beautifully organized, written and produced audio documentary, inspiringly presented by Guy Jones. I’d never heard of him before, but I’m a big fan now. Would love to see more content by him in the future. And perhaps a podcast. The ability to find what I’m interested in and info on composer, conductor, artist, etc., is such a relief after all these years. I spent a lot of the 90s and early 2000s digitizing cds, buying music online and then correcting and changing the metadata so I could find it again, so I can appreciate the gargantuan task Apple has undertaken. I can only be grateful for it, and patient with whatever shortcomings users may discover. No doubt improvements are yet-to-come. Another thing I like at first glance, it looks like film scores and composers are included here, which I appreciate, because I listen to a LOT of film music. I know some may disagree, but I’ve always thought film and TV scores at their best are the classical music of our time. Another thing I enjoy is being able to browse music without struggling through the firehose of pop music content that is the browsing feature of regular Apple Music. Listen Now and curated playlists used to work fairly well for me, but now it’s like the clutter and noise has been eliminated for me, and exploring will be a lot more pleasant, organized and streamlined. Thank you Apple!.Version: 1.0.1

A Long Wait, But Worth It!After a year of waiting, I was thrilled early in 2023 when I saw that Apple Music Classical was about to be released at last. What a treat to be able to search this enormous catalog by composer, multiple artists, etc., and to be able to play a work that is in several movements with a single click. From the earliest days of iTunes, classical music was forced into a format that is designed for popular music, with each movement of a major work treated as a separate “song,” but no more! I also want to put in a word about the excellent nine-part series narrated by Guy Jones, “The Story of Classical.” I listened to every episode and enjoyed them all. I have been listening to classical music for most of my life, took a course in college, and have read many articles and reviews, but still enjoyed this series, partly as a refresher and partly to fill in blanks in my knowledge. I gave the app five stars based on the overall concept and how well it is organized, but there is still work to be done. One thing that is still missing after many months is a button to go back 15 seconds at a time, as exists in the regular Apple Music app. Another missing function is shuffle play. While I would never think of shuffle-playing the movements of a symphony or the scenes in an opera, I wish that it was possible to shuffle-play collections of music in playlists or albums. But I know that Apple is working on improvements with the release in November of 2023 of an iPad version. This is a good improvement. I haven’t heard whether there will be versions for Mac and Apple TV, but I hope that there will be, especially for Apple TV so that I can take advantage of the Atmos capabilities of my AV receiver as Atmos apparently is not supported by AirPlay. (AirPlay support of Atmos would be a nice improvement for this app as well as others. Can it be done?) But I am happy that even this relatively bare-bones version is available and that an iPad version has now been released. I am looking forward to still more versions and improvements..Version: 1.1

I want to like it, but it’s not there yetI’m a classical musician and listener as well as iOS app developer who loves Apple so this app seemed too good to be true for me, and unfortunately it isn’t true. It’s close, and I like being able to look through recordings of a specific work and save works as a whole, and mostly I just like the huge library and high quality audio. But there are many issues: 1. If you go to the work page for Beethoven Violin Concerto in D major, the list of tracks don’t have the violinist in the name ANYWHERE. sometimes it even has a cellist because there is also a cello concerto on the album. Violinist needs to be first, then conductor/orchestra. 2. You can’t share individual tracks, only full recordings. Makes it hard to share with friends. 3. (This is a big one for me) In the Library section, you lose the big album tiles and the “recently added” section that Apple Music has. I really want that back, it helps me look through for what I want to listen to. You also can’t edit the list of sections, while you can on Apple Music. Overall the first point disappointed me because that should be the whole benefit of a specifically classical music app, and the third point disappointed me because it’s not as good as Apple Music. I also really want a Mac app. I hope that this app improves, and I’m giving it 4 stars rather than lower because I do think it has potential and I want to see it grow into itself..Version: 1.0.1

Great new idea!I love that classical music is breaking out into its own app. The filtering functions are very cool and I love how specific you can get (ensemble, soloist, etc.) I was extremely impressed with a feature in the opera essentials. When you click on the opera, the app provided a synopsis which is extremely helpful. It also lists other singers who have sung the aria as well as similar arias. I did not like, however, that the description of what opera is stated that it is “musical theater on steroids”. The descriptions of what each instrument and voice type are also leave something to be desired. Overall a fantastic concept, I feel classical music needs more depth and attention than other genres of music and this is a great first step in that direction. They also feature a history playlist that seems very interesting! Some features I would love to see: 1. sheet music (for pieces that are public domain) so the listener can follow along with the piece. 2. Translations for the art songs and opera arias!.Version: 1.0.1

Classically Impressed: A Symphony of Praise for Apple Music's Classical AppI recently subscribed to the Apple Music classical app and I have been thoroughly impressed with my experience so far. The app offers a vast library of classical music, including works from legendary composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach, as well as contemporary artists. The user interface is clean and easy to navigate, making it simple to find the music I want to listen to. One of the standout features of the app is the curated playlists. Whether you're in the mood for a specific composer or want to discover new classical music, the playlists are expertly crafted and always provide a wonderful listening experience. The app also allows you to save your favorite pieces and playlists, making it easy to access your favorite music at any time. The sound quality is excellent, with crisp and clear audio that really brings the music to life. I also appreciate the background information and insights provided for each piece, giving me a deeper understanding and appreciation for the music. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the Apple Music classical app and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves classical music. Whether you're a seasoned fan or just starting to explore this genre, the app offers a fantastic way to discover and enjoy the beauty of classical music..Version: 1.0.1

An okay startThis app is alright, but not quite there yet. It’s nice for searching for specific recordings and specific pieces; however, what I wish it had (and why I won’t be using it much until I see) is an auto-play feature that recommends tracks based on the song I started listening to. For example, if I start with Debussy’s “Reverie,” I would like for there to be more songs LIKE Reverie that automatically play afterward. I’ve found with the regular Apple Music app, this has been essential for me to discover new artists and new songs that I would not have even known how to search for. With this aspect missing in Apple Music Classical, I am a bit limited to only my preexisting knowledge of pieces, and I need to go elsewhere to find those recommendations. Until this is an aspect that can be added, I don’t think I’ll be using Apple Music Classical all that much. Additionally, making playlists is a little confusing to navigate. When I go to my “Playlists” tab, there’s no option to “Start New Playlist” as there is with the regular Apple Music app; how am I meant to start playlists? Do I have to do it on the Apple Music app and then add through Apple Music Classical? Wouldn’t it make more sense to streamline it by just making that accessible in Apple Musical Classical by itself? On a related note, adding to favorite recordings is a more obtuse than it needs to be. There should be a search bar in the “Browse” tab, so I can add recordings without having to try to navigate to them through guessing what composer catalogue or playlist they would be part of. Lastly, and this is more of a personal grievance — why isn’t euphonium included in the “Instruments” tab of Browse? I see recorder, lute, and even accordion, but euphonium is unfortunately not represented. I understand that I’m in the majority, but I wish to use Apple Music Classical a bit less even than before knowing my instrument is not a search option in that way..Version: 1.0.2

Oh Well, Good First Effort, But…There are many features here for those of us with a love of classical music. Others have commented on how one can explore by instrument, genre, and period of music. But… Why can’t I stack recordings and lists for playback and then randomize them. I nightly select quiet, gentle music, randomize, and then sleep with my headphones on masking background sounds (helped by noise canceling headphones). I’ll select, let’s say, guitar adagio albums (all the music isn’t actually adagio but still slow) and set up 6 hours or more randomized (these are single movements) and then the whole set repeats. This is NOT available on this new classical app. Oh well. Update (4-7-23): I love their groupings by composer, genre, period of music, etc. It’s amazing to see 435 recordings of “The Rite of Spring”. I love it! However, surely Anton Webern cannot remotely be categorized as a Romantic era composer!! Apple, please have someone with more knowledge go over your lists again. And you might want to consider having a Post-Romantic classification for the likes of Mahler and Bruckner..Version: 1.0.1

Need iPadOS and MacOS versions and crossover featuresIt says a lot about how good this app is that my criticisms of it are basically just wanting more and easier access to it. For example, I love this app on my iPhone, but I also listen to music on my other Apple devices, and it’s a bit disappointing that those systems don’t have this app. It would also be great if there were more fluidity between this app and the regular music app. For example, if I hit play on my AirPods, after a period of inactivity, it will play the last thing I was listening to on the regular music app instead of the last thing I was listening to on classical. I would also love it if Apple expanded on the “Story of Classical” pieces to build out its own broader classical podcast. I really love the way Guy Jones tells the interesting stories of classical and how it got from one place to another. It has vastly increased my understanding of and appreciation for this music. In a lot of ways, classical lost out on the last few generations of music because only modern recording and consumer headphone technology can really capture what is so amazing about it. All the nuance and dynamics of classical only work when you can cancel out the noise and hear every little frequency. I’m so glad to be able to hear this music as it was intended just about anywhere, so please finish the job, Apple, and let’s make this the music of the people again..Version: 1.0.2

A Great Idea That Needs ImprovementThe idea of a dedicated classical music streaming app is intriguing. Engaging with classical is a very different process than engaging with pop music, so some optimized functionality could go a long way. And by and large, this app is pretty successful. Being able to search for composers, players, and pieces makes finding recordings a lot easier. The app syncing with my regular music app helps a lot too. But there’s some problems. I won’t talk about the shuffle issue as everyone else already has. Instead I’ll talk about the jankiness of the sync function. For whatever reason, not all of my classical recordings from the main music app transfer over. When I try to add the recordings to the classical app, they don’t show up in my classical library. Similarly, certain recording I add to my main library don’t sync with my classical library but others do. I find this very frustrating, as it makes it more convenient to just use the main app to listen to classical..Version: 1.1

WowI’m almost reluctant to say that Apple hit this out of the park for me. Limitless ways to search, great little bios on Many composers, soloists, and even instruments. The engine seems to work well and fast. Finally and most importantly (to me) is that the audio quality is great. Even over Bluetooth, the sound is more than satisfactory but when you really want to relax and pull out every detail, plug in your favorite headphones and take it all in. Also, there are narrated historical playlists compiled. These are an engaging lesson on the historical details of specific genres of classical. I’m currently checking out the baroque lesson. Fantastic explanations that present examples in between. If your in to classical, instrumental, or music history this is a great addition. The creators will probably never see this but Thank You!ll Well done and I’m looking forward to what else you come up with..Version: 1.0.1

UI/UX Is Liberating Except When It Isn’tGood UI/UX design should liberate a user to experience new things they couldn’t otherwise with more ease. So often this new interface achieves this, and that is vital because there is little to this app that differentiates it from the regular music app besides a few comments, curated playlists, and UI/UX. UI/UX is unusually relevant for this app. There are so many ways it enables new experiences, but there are two seemingly deliberate design choices that contradict this: -The ability to add a song to a queue (“play next”) manually -The ability to shuffle I think bluntness is appropriate here. These are in my opinion cowardly design choices. They can only derive from a fear that the interface won’t adequately enable the desired experiences. I disagree, and to any extent that that’s arguably true, it can be solved through small design changes that further encourage people to use the app in the more helpful ways that have been curated. You did great with this app. If you don’t want shuffle, I understand that’s more debatable in context of what this app is for, but don’t let fear hold you back from implementing “play next” in this app. It’s a bold design you should be confident enough in for “play next” to not undermine the UI/UX. Don’t get in your own way from a place of fear. Be bold in showing more people the beauty of classical music through this artful UI/UX design..Version: 1.0.1

Great way to discover classical musicThis is a fantastic way to discover and learn about classical music. The way things are organized seems to make sense and slices the data in a way that works really well for the unique needs of the sprawling classical music catalog. Other music apps are geared towards a single recording of a piece, whereas in classical music, the piece has often been recorded hundreds of times by different musicians. Being able to browse by work is very valuable indeed. One relatively minor annoyance: the “now playing” widget at the bottom of the app seems to lose what is currently playing quite often after the app is put in the background or my device locked. I haven’t figured out steps to reproduce it yet, but it’s inconvenient when you’ve browsed away from what’s playing and then that loses track of it as well. Overall, this is the best way I’ve found to consume classical music..Version: 1.1

An Important Step for Music.Keeping classical music and modern music is essential for the classical music enthusiasts. Traditional Apple Music algorithms don’t work in the context of classical, I don’t want to listen to classical and than rap. Classical is music, but it has a different motive when listening to it, it’s classical music, not a genre, it’s a whole separate thing. That’s what some of these low reviewers don’t understand. I don’t want classical to play in Apple Music, I want a separate app. This is what I want, when I’m in the mood for Classical I don’t want alternative to play next, I’m in the mood for classical. I want a separate algorithm for my classical, I don’t want my classical side to even know my traditional side. That’s what this app is for, people who don’t get the point will rate it low. Admittedly it’s not for everyone, that’s why it exists..Version: 1.0.1

I get it nowIf you're a fan of classical music, the Classical app is a must-have. This beautifully designed app offers a vast library of classical music, from beloved masterpieces to lesser-known gems. With easy-to-use navigation and search functions, you can quickly find and listen to your favorite works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and more. One of the standout features of the Classical app is its high-quality audio, which allows you to fully appreciate the nuances and subtleties of each composition. You can also create custom playlists to suit your mood or occasion, making it easy to enjoy classical music wherever you go. Overall, I highly recommend the Classical app to anyone who loves classical music. It's a well-designed, easy-to-use app that provides endless hours of listening pleasure..Version: 1.0.1

Great application but no iPad version.I only use Apple Music to listen to classical pieces, and it is nice to see a new app that is specifically designed for it. With the original app, it is often hard to navigate for the pieces I want to listen to. And also very distracting when I suddenly hear lyrics coming out of the speakers.(Lyrics limits my imagination while classical is complexed and are often played with emotions.) With this new app, I am able to focus on my favorite composers and conductors. Despite the ease it brought to me, I am disappointed when I found out that this app does not have an iPad version.(I usually listen from an iPad due to its loud speakers and can be stabilized on a piano. This way I can use the sound played as a reference. The app, though, can only be used vertically, which the iPad won’t stand.) It will be nice if a horizontal version for iPad is built, Apple..Version: 1.0.1

Great app with a few minor problemsThis app is great and I use it almost every day, but the 2 things I would like to see is the sorting of works by recordings, and a more flushed-out browse page. Sometimes when I want to listen to new work, I'll go to a composer I like, but then if I want to listen to their more popular works, they're not sorted correctly. The browse page is nice, but it could do with more work, like sorting the instruments by families or including more categories on what we can explore, as well as more sets of playlists. The only other thing I have to mention is that the listening guides (which are great, by the way) sometimes are bugged and don't show up. However, these are only small things in an otherwise really good app, which is why I'm still giving it 5 stars..Version: 2.3.1

Needs lots of work. Come on, Apple.I am reviewing the app itself, not the extensive collection of music. First, the app is iPhone-only. Seriously, they did not have the people-power to design it work as an iPad app? Are we in 2010? Second, the app quit working and would not play music. I quit it many times and restarted it, but I resorted to playing music from the Music app. At some point during the night it decided to work again. Third, if you are playing a playlist and exit the song view, you’ll see a list of songs and somewhere there is your song, with controls at the bottom. It is not obvious which piece you are playing. Finally, it seems like the Music app is just better all around. Maybe Apple decided they needed to design a new app from scratch rather than porting the Music app. I like having all the music in one spot, but the app should have been a better product. Please improve it and get an iPad version..Version: 1.0.1

It’s a good start, but…After using it for about two weeks, I can say that Apple Music Classical is absolutely essential for perusing classical music on a streaming platform. No other mainstream music streaming service does it this well. That being said, the app still feels empty. A few features that I would consider essential to any app like this are missing: no macOS support, no ability to directly download music from within the app (you have to add it to your library then switch back to regular Apple Music to download), no CarPlay support, and no real-time lyrics for operas. That last one is a particular pain point for me— the fact that I always need to have a separate app open to follow the lyrics (and lyrical translations) is really annoying, and I feel it should be baked in to Apple Music Classical. I really hope that these features will be added in the near future. But until then, my review will top out at 3 stars..Version: 1.0.1

Almost perfectThe navigation and search is much better than normal music. Very nice sync, I was afraid I wild have to recreate all my playlists again, but it synced all of them from apple music. The reason I leave a four star rating is simply because it didn’t have enough tracks. I will search of a specific song, and it will lead me to the with the song is found in, but there are no recordings of the song I am looking for. It is nice, however, that it will show me that there are no recordings of the song I’m looking for. On Apple Music, I would search for a song, but couldn’t find it. On Apple Music classical, it would come up with the song I am looking for, but then show me that there are no recordings of it. If there was more recordings to less popular classical songs, I would rate the app 5 stars..Version: 1.4

Needs more functionalityApple Music Classical is great in principle, but it’s lacking basic functionality that you’d find in the regular Apple Music: you can’t download, you can’t shuffle, you can’t change what’s in the up next cue, etc. There’re also some glitches, which are to be expected with a new app; I’ve found that, on occasion, if you try to play a song in the middle of a playlist, it’ll play the first song of the playlist and never advance to the next song; it also will stop playing sometimes when the screen is locked. There are a few other problems I’ve come across that I can’t recall right now. I think it’s a good concept that makes a valiant attempt to address the unique problems of categorizing classical music that doesn’t exist for popular music, but it needs some improvement..Version: 1.0.2

Classical Done RightThis is exactly what I’ve always wanted from a music streaming app— and all included in Apple Music! Now I can browse specific works by a specific composer. I would add browsable categories like specific instrumentation, such as piano trio or string quartet, and also include date of composition and composer nationality in the metadata. Also nice would be more precise genes for the 20th century, such as ‘impressionist’, ‘serialist’, though maybe that’s taking things a little too far. I love the ‘Story of Classical’ lectures and the ‘Track by Track’ Albums Apple has put together. Maybe get in touch with Eric Wen, William Rothstein, Robert Greenberg, or Bruce Adolphe to provide full-blown in-depth music analysis courses within Apple Music Classical. That would really be something! Credit where credit is due the crew at Primephonic whose work has been repurposed by Apple, and excellent job by the curators at Apple at hopefully getting more folks into classical music. Edit: The app is still buggy, and I have to restart my phone to get it to unfreeze. Some problems I have: when it sorts composer by name, there should be an alphabet quick scroll on the side, otherwise you’re just scrolling past millions of ‘a’s’. Also, the app should be better at organizing a composers’ pieces under ‘works’. So, instead of having all of Mozart’s 700 pieces listed by popularity or catalogue number, create subcategories like, ‘operas, concertos, solo piano works, chamber music, miscellaneous pieces’ etc. so you can more easily browse for what you’re looking for. Also, there should be a way of grouping together collections of works, such as Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier or Monteverdi’s books of Madrigals. Also, the ‘Library’ is a little confusing. For instance, it’s weird if I put a star on a ‘recording’, I’m not also saving the ‘work’ that that recording is a performance of, or the composer who wrote it, or if I’m saving an album I’m not also saving the ‘recording’ on that album. Furthermore, ideally the preexisting Apple Music library should appear in the classical app, with all the composers and works I’ve saved ALREADY listed as such in the new library..Version: 1.0.1

ExcitingI’ve been patiently waiting for this app and it exceeded all my expectations!! I absolutely love the composer pages where you can see all the collected works, select a work, read about it, and see all the different recordings of just that work. The instrument specific pages are so great as well. Everything is so organized and logical. I also love the 9 part story of classical music and cant wait to listen to them. I’ll get to see how much I remember from my music history classes in university. This app is so exciting to me as a classical musician because it not only tells me that there is a demand for an app like this (yay! Classical music is alive!) but also because it is making classical music even more accessible, interesting, and digestible..Version: 1.0.1

Good, but needs some basicsThe app does a nice job of allowing the user to access classical music. The organization by piece, and the ability to search by piece is done nicely. A few things need to be added, though, which seem very basic: first, users should be able to search their library! (you can do this in regular Apple Music, so why can’t you do this in Apple classical music?) Second, the library currently lists albums in one’s library with a lazy load, so it is frustrating to try to scroll quickly. Third, liner note should be available for most recordings: classical music listeners want to read about the recordings and the pieces. These three features existed in the app which Apple purchased in order to make Apple classical music; why were these features removed?.Version: 2.2.1

I love itI have always struggled to find classical music, it’s not as popular as music you find on the radio, coupled with the fact that you really can’t find new artists or modern day classical music very easily. This app fixes all of that! It quite literally has so much and I honestly can’t wait to listen to all of it! There are a few hiccups with it playing tracks and loading though that definitely could be my wifi. I have also yet to find a place to download the tracks, but I am writing this review like the first day it came out. All in all, if you like classical music, are/were and dancer, need something to study to, or looking to try something new, this is the music app for you. 10/10 do absolutely recommend..Version: 1.0.1

Disappointed in some aspects.**First, it appears to only be an iPhone app and looks silly on my large iPad Pro.** THIS IS NOW FIXED! Next, I am unable to tell Siri to fast forward, skip or don’t like a certain track in a playlist when I’m using share to HomePod. Siri said the feature not added yet so maybe with an update? I’m a baroque and renaissance fan, but dislike choral pieces and pieces with organ. In car, on CarPlay I have not made it work — insofar as I cannot install the app on my car’s CarPlay which is done via CarPlay settings on the phone. Next issue I found is I cannot seem to get it on my Apple TVs as an app. Instead must start play on phone, then airplay to my Apple TVs For me, the point of this app for me was to get uninterrupted playing of entire movements of compositions as written by composer. So shuffle is moot And considering most operatic music isn’t in English it’s really sort of moot to not have lyrics. I removed it from iPad. Will use on phone for use with airplay to my Denon receiver- no need to have tv on. Interestingly, the Apple Remote controls the volume on the amplifier probably because the Apple TV is connected via hdmi to my amplifier and not directly to the tv. We have a second Apple TV in our RV and I was able to stream via airplay from my phone to that Apple TV as well. Bummed about the carplay. If I discover a way to stream to my car audio system which runs Ford Sync 4 on a Bang and Olafson platform (stock on my 2023 vehicle) I’ll update. Added more stars since I’ve figured out how to get it on one HEOS System, two apple TVs and 4 HomePods (one OG, 3 minis). It may come in future to CarPlay so hopefully we will see it soon 🤞🏻 Updated to note now available on iPad..Version: 1.1

Decent, but needs a queueI was happy to see a solid pass at a genre which isn’t well served by most other apps & services. Audio quality is excellent, especially with AirPods or my studio headphones. My son loves being able to search by instrument as he learns to play the cello. The main drawback I noticed is not having a queue: I’m almost always listening to whole albums so if I see three things I want to listen to I shouldn’t have to spend time finding the second one an hour later. They also need to work on library matching. My iTunes Match collection has hundreds of well-tagged classical albums I ripped from my CD collection using iTunes, but perhaps a quarter of them show up in this app. They all have appropriate genre and composer tags..Version: 2.1

Audio still reflects track focus of iTunesMy first album played on the app was not a rousing success. Carmina Burana, Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia Orchestra, Rutgers Choir, 1960 extended edition is a recording that I knew would challenge this new app and I was not overly surprised at the results. Track separations were erratic and did not conform to the original recording. There were long gaps between some tracks even in places where no gap should be. Especially annoying was during the dramatic conclusion of the work. The last three “tracks” should blend from one to the next with no gaps at all. Inexplicably, a 10 second or more gap of total silence was placed between the plaintive soprano solo of “Dulcissime” and the ensuing chorus of “Blanzifor Et Helena”. But it did get the transition from that chorus to the reprise of “O Fortuna” right without a gap. Here’s hoping Apple can get the wrinkles out in the near future..Version: 1.0.1

Simple, but a good companion appA nice companion to the main Apple Music app. I also subscribe to Idagio, which has far more powerful, more granular search capabilities, more playlists, and often provides much more detailed information on a given recording. There is also not the same level of standardization that Idagio has—movement names can be shown differently, and it doesn’t distinguish between various incarnations of a piece (piano version vs. orchestrations, for example). But unless you’re a super nerd like me, you may not want to shell out the extra $10/mo. If that’s the case, this app is still a huge step up. While things are occasionally mislabeled (I’ve come across instances where the piece is attributed to the wrong composer, for example), it has some unique features such as Listening Guides. Not a bad experience overall..Version: 3.0

Needs shuffleAlmost perfect. So great to have a user experience custom tailored to classical music. I’m guessing there’s no shuffle because the team found it difficult to reconcile works vs tracks. My suggestion to the design team: don’t overthink it, shuffling tracks is fine. There’s no need to shuffle at 30+ minute intervals amongst full works. Here’s the use case: I love piano concertos. I found a whole bunch I’ve never heard before. If I listen to them in the same order in a playlist, they’ll “burn in” to my memory faster and I get bored with them sooner. Shuffling the tracks gives me a fresh experience every time I listen. It would be great to see this feature added. It might actually be a deal-breaker that causes me to stick with my existing music service..Version: 1.0.1

Feels half finishedI was eagerly waiting for this app ever since Apple bought out Primephonic. I do love the curation and suggested content, but it feels like a half-finished copy of a Apple Music. I drive frequently in low-service areas and have to download my albums, but with Classical I have to go back into the main Apple Music app to have that option…why? As an existing feature in one app and they’re basically carbon copy interfaces, that should be seamless. The interactive features that Primephonic specialized in and pioneered are absent as well, which Apple had promised to continue. Deep dives into compositions, rather like mini-courses, really helped one to experience the music in a whole new way. I hope they continue development, but this iteration feels rushed and incomplete. Downloading music from the app should be a priority..Version: 1.0.1

Hi ResSo many Hi Res files. Music to my ears..Version: 1.0.1

Almost thereI’m quite happy with the app overall, I think it’s a great addition to the classical music browsing experience, but I feel like there are a couple features missing, such as: - The ability to mark favourite works or recordings not only from the composer’s page, but from anywhere. There could be the options “add to favourite works” and “add to favourite recordings” in the three-dotted button. - Once we’ve added a favourite recording, it’d be great to see it featured on the work’s page, just like the “Editor’s choice” that is featured on top. Same thing goes for a favourite work. It should be featured in the composer’s page as “Your favourited works”. Nonetheless, it’s a great app and I hope to see new features like these in the future!.Version: 1.0.1

No HomePod support?Out of the box, can’t play directly from my HomePod mini - only AirPlay? That seems like an oversight. This is disappointing, given Apple’s well known vertical integration model, but not surprising given their history with actually integrating their hardware and software half as well as they say they do. Otherwise, I’m enjoying the new interface for Apple Music focused on the music I want to listen to instead of the always-present pop promotion in the main app..Version: 1.0.1

Like a beta releaseIt is really strange that Apple with all the creativity and resource available can’t adapt a version to iPad in the first release. Need more work….Version: 1.0.1

A noticeable improvement, but I was expecting so much betterThere is a nice layout here and certainly more detail. We get a better picture having separate data points for ensemble, soloists and conductor, and composer and work. While accuracy is improved, there are still outright errors (the list of albums by the Philadelphia Orchestra starts with an album NOT by them) and more importantly this has not done anything to solve the correct dating problem. (The years these recordings were made are often wrong) This app does nothing to solve the reissue problem or compilation problem. To make things easy to find each recording should have only one entry. Apple worked on this app for 2 years and with a bit more ambition could have owned this space resulting in numerous people in Europe and Asia switching from competitors. Instead we get a pretty but ultimately half baked experience..Version: 1.0.1

IPad VersionThis app works well on an iPhone but is quite poor as an iPad app as it does not fill the screen. Is it possible to create a version for the iPad?.Version: 1.0.1

No IPad supportI am looking forward to this..Version: 1.0.1

Great App - Needs CarPlayThis app has been great! I’m still being introduced to classical music and this app has made it much easier to access and experience. My only ask if an Apple CarPlay version could be made. Thanks!.Version: 1.1

Apple Music ClassicalCould use a more variety but it’s getting there. App works just like Apple Music and has most of its features. Overall it’s a good app if you like classical music..Version: 1.1

Good but missing featuresI would like to download the music on my phone when I don’t have internet. Otherwise, pretty good app!.Version: 1.1

CarPlayEst-ce Normal de ne pas l’avoir dans auto CarPlay , j’ai Apple Music mais pas Apple Music Classic en option ?!!!!.Version: 1.0.1

Woefully UnderdevelopedThe Apple Classical music app is like a 1.0 app. Missing so many features. Biggest issue is not being able to listen offline and download music to your device. Also needs an iPad and Apple TV app. Overall Apple Classical streaming music is damaged by weak app..Version: 1.0.2

No iPad app?? 😵I can’t think of any good reason why this service launched without an iPad app. C’mon Apple!.Version: 1.0.2

Love it…Once it receives CarPlay support five stars, it will be!.Version: 1.0.1

Good app, minor issuesI really like the app so far. It’s much better navigating classical music in this way than on the other app. After using the app for a few days I noticed some things: 1. UI. AirPods/Headphones icon does not appear on the AirPlay icon like it would on Apple Music. This makes it harder to tell if you’re connected to headphones, or if the music will play full blast through the speaker. 2. Lack of support. It’s surprising from Apple considering their tight knit ecosystem that only the iPhone is supported. I’m sure there are plans to make iPad, Mac, CarPlay, Watch, and HomePod compatible, but it honestly should have been from launch. This isn’t a soft launch, and from the amount of ads I’ve seen I’m guessing it’s not in beta either. Support should have been taken care of from the get go and since it’s not, the whole thing feels kind of rushed. Overall, it’s good. Minor things that always get fixed and will get fixed for sure in the near future. Thanks for reading!.Version: 1.0.1

Finally an app for classical music loverThe experience of listening to classical music wasn’t so great on the old apple music app, this one is much better. Absolutely love it💛💛.Version: 1.0.1

No Apple TV version?I would’ve loved to see an Apple TV version. Also, I’m unable to download the songs in my phone. Do something about it Apple. Great idea though..Version: 1.0.1

BeautifulBeautiful interface & sound. Bravo Apple ][.Version: 1.0.1

Classico admirableDouceur, calme, j’adore pouvoir trouver mes musiques classiques facilement!.Version: 3.1.1

Nice spaceI like it as a separate space for classical. I like how it’s formatted. I wish it had all the lyrics with translations. Maybe with the use of AI this is possible..Version: 3.1.1

Great appI listen to it daily for meditative purposes. I love the often updated ‘Mood’ playlists which makes the selection so much easier. Played throughout our home’s HomePod Minis.Version: 3.1.1

The only source with an extraordinarily large libraryAs the title says - this really is . . . Large. That’s what this app is about - easy and broad access with perfectly satisfactory sound. You get convenience on the go - that’s why you use this source. As an audiophile listener, I can tell you that when you need really top source files to listen to - your “own listening time in the quiet room “ - you simply don’t use any streaming service at all. You buy your own files (96-24 pcm files or DSD256) and use a proper DAC-amp. And wires are involved - lots of wires. That’s how it’s done..Version: 3.1.1

Should be separate from Music appEnjoy the Classical app but I don’t like it showing up in my music app selections. Can they not be separate? I really like the selection in the Classical app and the stations..Version: 3.1.1

ClassicalAwesome platform with lots of contents. A delight…..Version: 3.1.1

Its nice but it needs more featuresThe app works fine but it really needs more features and options to be at the same level as the regular apple music app.Version: 3.1.1

Best classical optionLove the suggestions and the ease of search.Version: 3.1.1

Fabulous app to enhance cognitionApple separated music from classical brilliantly so that recreation can be distinguished from intellectual pursuits..Version: 3.1.1

Readable scores, please!Love this app, I use it all the time! Maybe lacking a sort by instrumentation (i.e. string quartet, solo flute and orchestra, piano trio) One much-needed addition: PLEASE add readable scores to the pieces (like lyrics on Apple Music) it would be such a great addition! I know it’s a lot of work for the dev team, but partner with IMSLP or something! Please take this request into serious consideration. Sincerely, a student and classical musician.Version: 3.0

So close to perfectThis app is amazing, but a couple small shortfalls from it being the absolute perfect classical app - There is not shuffle functionality. Would love to have the ability to shuffle by track or by recording - After a playlist ends, the music stops. Would be nice to have continuous playback and to have the app suggest pieces - Curation could be improved.Version: 3.1.1

Room for ImprovementPretty good app, but there’s still more that could be there, you know? When I need to find recordings for my band, I usually look to Apple Music (because of infuriations with YouTube) and a ton of the pieces are not there. For instance, Thawing (composed by Kazuki Shimoda) is not there and should probably be there, being an insanely epic piece. Also, what’s the point of Apple Music classical if I can find all the same songs on regular Apple Music? Also, there are different versions/arrangements of tons of well known songs, and it’d be cool if those were there, too. It’d also be cool if you could single out parts of songs, like if you were to single out the trombone part and just listen to that. Other than those points, pretty good app..Version: 3.0

ADD INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSICWould have enjoyed the app more if it had Indian classical music, instruments, artists. Please let me know when you add an entire section of Hindustani/Indian classical music. 🪷🪞🦢✨💟.Version: 3.0

Something is wrongI originally gave this at five stars, but I must change that now. I have had problems, deleting albums, which seems to have been resolved, but now I cannot add albums to the library. It seems that as soon as one thing gets fixed, something else goes wrong..Version: 3.0

Classical Makes Apple Music The BestApple, please never stop supporting this app. Your Classical offering is what makes Apple Music the best music streaming service in the world. There’s nothing else like it today. It’s an ode to the past, as a gift to all of us in the present. Merci beaucoup, grazie mille, bardzo dziękuję!.Version: 3.0

This has no reason to exist and could totally be on apple music, and that’s why I love itYes.Version: 3.0

Apple TVI love this app but would love it on my Apple TV to!.Version: 3.0

I really like it, but no shuffle?I love this app, but would love the ability to shuffle when I want. I know lots of stuff has an intentional order, but I would like to decide when to follow that order.Version: 3.0

One of a kind!!Please continue to improve this essential app! The rich, sprawling classical music landscape has never been this easy to explore and appreciate. Consider supporting: album time period and genre filters (analogous to the composer filters), a search bar in the ‘add to playlist’ pop-up, more control over which favourited artists end up in the composers section of one’s library..Version: 3.0
