NewsTap Lite is a Usenet Newsreader for the iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch.
"NewsTap Lite" is the free version of the "NewsTap" App. "NewsTap Lite" is a fully functional Usenet Newsreader, but it does not support all features of the "NewsTap" App. The Lite version only supports one server and can only subscribe to two group.
Features of NewsTap Lite:
- Optimized for offline usage. Download and send out articles in one go and then you can read and write articles completely offline.
- Supports binary groups with photos and other files.
- Supports filters to mark articles as read or mark them with a certain color.
- Hyperlinks are automatically detected and can be opened in a web browser.

Good news readerWorks pretty well. The author has done a fine job. It’s not perfect though. And it’s very limited. Below comments are intended to be constructive not negative.
The limit of one server and two groups is pretty stingy, even for a trial version. I would suggest 2 servers and 6 groups would be less scrooge-like.

Only usenet reader app on iPhoneI think this software is great and the bugs with connecting to news servers have been fixed in this new version and it works fairly stable. It is a little difficult to use for instance if you want to go to the next and previous posts you have to slide your finger across the screen as opposed to pressing a single button to go forward and back. That's only a minor setback though. Also there should be an option to delete read posts without having to reconnect to your newsserver in order to process it. It would also be nice if it supported SSL and multiple connections to speed up header downloads. Other than those minor things it has everything I was looking for..DieburnbotVersion: 0
Best free newsgroup reader appI tried every one I could find and this is best by far. If I hadn't tried so many, I might have only given 3 or 4 stars. Decent overallAs others have said it’s the best USENET reader available. It has many good functions and works well overall. Honestly it’s one of the main reasons I’m not switching from iOS to Android at this time.
I would like to see a few enhancements though:
— quote selected text. This is a vital function of newsreaders which helps trim down long messages.
— the internal browser has stopped working reliably. It will bring up a website but never complete rendering it.

Odd Modal UIOK, so I enter a newsserver in settings and the app launches and since it's the first time it downloads all groups, right. Well not quite. Instead I go to a screen called Connect with a bunch if settings and a download button. Pressing this starts downloading the groups... MODALY!! Other tabs on the tab control are DISABLED!! But wait, it's a tab control? Huh?
Well maybe initial setup is a bit odd... let's add a group to My Groups and dive into some articles. Adding makes sense, a plus button in the NavBar takes you to a list of all groups, tap one, and there it is in the My Groups list.
OK so now I tap it and it takes me to the articles, right? Wrong. It takes you to an empty list. Hmmmm. What to do?No Refresh button in the NavBar. Maybe that odd Connect tab will help? Ah. That's it. Back to Connect, hit button... articles start to download... and WE ARE LOCKED OUT OF THE OTHER TABS AGAIN!!!

Maybe I'm missing something but...First of all, the setup and operation (which requires a strange manual send and receive step) reminds me of trumpet winsock or something.
But is it just me or is the thread list not able to be sorted by date? I guess if I was looking for pr0n or warez it'd be useful to sort alphabetically but I can't really use it this way. I don't see an option to sort by date.

I wanted this to work...but alas...And yes, the subject line is misleading. The app does work, it's just missing the one function USENET readers live by - sorting by date. Alpha sorting is pretty but really useless in the greater context of USENET. Newsgroups (and, if you really take the time to notice, blog comments) are primarily sorted by date, then by thread. This app does download content - that's great. But /finding/ that content in a relevant manner is frustatingly difficult.

Latest Version is brokenI used NewsTap for several years and found it a solid nntp news client. Then a major update came out, and since then it has not worked at all for me.It would connect to servers, download group lists, and subscribe to groups, but it would never download any news.
I deleted and reinstalled the latest version (updated within the past week) and now it won’t even download the group list. Just sits and spins trying to connect to the server, and finally gives up. I’ve tried multiple servers and ports that work fine with my Mac news client..Al from OttawaVersion: 5.1.3
