Everything a good compass can do but…Years later and I still live this app. I also still wish you could orienteer like a real compass. All it needs is a direction of travel line, and an orienteering arrow (that little house to keep the needle in) and a way to turn the bezel to a specific azimuthal (without moving the map). Happy to resend screen shots of what it could look like if that helps. Original review below: It lacks a direction of travel line and an orienteering arrow. You can certainly shoot an azimuth by setting a way point, and can see direction of travel once you start moving but… It would be nice to be able line up the direction of travel, the needle, and orienteering arrow; then two finger turn the bezel to say 10°, turn your body until the needle is inside the orienteering window and walk following the direction of travel line. Should be an easy UI update. It also lacks a ruler, which I imagine is harder to implement with all the different screen sized (or need to calibrate it) and wouldn’t be easily used with a paper map (and not needed for a digital map). This is a full featured compass that makes use of all the phone sensor data and map data and nicely integrates gps, gyros, and accelerometers. it even emulates a site glass when you hold the phone 90° and “look” through the phone screen..AS701Version: 3.17

Elite Quality AppThis is one of those rare apps that you come across every so often that truly demonstrates the power of what an application on a smart phone can do. I personally have only come across a handful of apps that are what I consider "elite". This App works flawlessly. The design is very slick and minimal which I equate to quality. I could honestly see this application being something that you would see on a screen in the cockpit of a jet aircraft. After using this app for only a short time, it becomes obvious that the creator of this app has the Swift/Objective-C programming language mastered. I honestly wish that the author of this app would create a Celeste you'll start tracking app as I know it would be five stars as well. Great toolCalibration using visual land marks, satellite aerial map and sun make this a very accurate tool. Accuracy is there if you know how to set it up. Metal is no longer an issue when finding an azimuth. Remote tree and building heights is another favorite use of this powerful tool. Take the time to learn this app. Still using frequently and am really impressed. One improvement would be an option for large text for Bering. Or a separate azimuth mode with larger bearing text. Update: Years later I still use this app. In fact, it’s only app I pay money for. It is worth it to me. I install communications equipment, and when I have to set specific directional antenna path, I use this tool where I can literally put my phone on the back of the antenna and hit the target, after a local calibration. What happened to the Open Street maps?Back to normal with OSM maps after an app deletion, reinstallation. It may have been a map caching issue. Funny thing is, I had only been using OSM maps. Once the app was updated to the newest version, the USGS Topo maps were there and enabled. Toggling to OSM maps numerous times, restarting the devices did not clear the issue. This was on two different devices…both devices required the app deletion, reinstallation to get them back to normal. App rating changed back to 5 stars. The “Open Street maps” that I used exclusively are now gone and are now instead USGS topo maps…what happened to the OSM @ Happymagenta maps??? One compass to rule them AllThis is a powerful app without crass commercial distractions. It is a powerful navigational tool. Valuable to hikers, hunters, rock hounders, cyclists, automobile GPS, boaters, and any others who wish to use the most comprehensive compass based navigational tool for iOS. Pretty Great but…I’m having a lot of fun and getting plenty of use from this app but I’m wondering about a couple of things which annoy me to the point that I can’t give it five stars. When adding a new destination via a map location, is there a way to also have the correct elevation of that specific location included? When I add a location, the correct GPS coordinates are there but I believe it is using my current elevation and not the elevation of that desired location. Also, I read the manual and it mentions a Car Mode but I do not see that option in settings. Has it been removed? Is there an alternative? It appears the manual is a bit outdated. Good documentationAs apps do more and more, and become increasingly complex, it’s essential to have some sort of user guide if you’re to use all the capabilities. Spyglass does, and has done so for years. I appreciate that. In addition, the Spyglass developers keep the app up to date, and add *real* improvements periodically, not just pretty pictures that take up space but don’t improve functionality. I appreciate that as well. 3 Stars, Here’s why:No “map only” function. Sometimes I just want to view the map without the compass blocking my view, and also have the altitude/coordinates track that marker live. Which brings me to problem 2, a huge one: you better be on location to mark a waypoint, otherwise this compass has no idea what the elevation is. Leaving you to completely guess how much of a climb something is. This isn’t a replacement for proper orienteering, but even on my day hikes I’d like to know if a certain planned route is doable on app, since it’s more than capable of accessing the elevation data. This is a glaring omission by the developer(s), who have otherwise done an excellent job. Leading to Point 3: elevation difference on target marker is a forgotten feature as well, apparently. Why I would only want to know straight line distance is beyond me. That’s practically useless on its own in the mountains. So I’m 700’ off target but have a 1000’ elevation difference (55°grade). Phenomenal UISuch an interesting and helpful source of information on long drives. However, I have one suggestion: in car mode, using trajectory for bearing is essential. I hope the developers will incorporate a similar function for horizon calibration. Since there is no reliable mount that will eliminate shifts in a phones vertical movement, a user can never be confident in the accuracy of the horizon calibration. I imagine a calculation with the shift in elevation could provide adequate data. I would prefer reliability and consistency over precision with this feature while enabled. This is the oneThe ONLY thing that’s a drawback about this app is that if you’re truly out in the middle of nowhere without internet service, the map overlay won’t work. But that is not Spyglass’ fault, and everything else here is *superb*. This is a professional-grade compass, and then some. Sextant, inclinometer, rangefinder, and other goodies. Wonderful App!We have used this App In all the national state parks that we have visited - and where I could definitively mark the spot where I found a new dinosaur foot print up in the Delicate Arch trail which was great fun. Unique & HandySpyglass has many unique and useful features setting it apart from other navigation tools. The use of virtual reality display, offline capability, and datum library add-on shows great potential. Now for ....Great work. The compass gets in the way sometimes. It would be nice to turn it off sometimes. The only other feature I would like to see is the ability to enter a saved point and specify another saved point as a destination and it give a distance. Too Complex with Useless Arcane OptionsWhile I have had Spyglass for a number of years, it has never been a go to app. It is just too complex with numerous useless and cumbersome options. IPhone XR issueThe version 3.9.9 of Spyglass does not allow one to read both the north and west GPS coordinates at the same time. Well done, but has calibration issueFor those looking for a sophisticated compass/direction/bearing app, this is absolutely fantastic. For those more typical users who still haven't used their devices built-in map app to guide them along roads or sidewalks showing their movement and the direction they are facing live on the satellite image view, I'd say this more advanced but also very limited/specific compass app would be of no use. Note that this is not a full/typical navigation app as most people think of them (and it is not meant to be, so that is not a drawback), it will store locations, but only use them for showing straight line bearing/direction/distance from your current point. It is basically an advanced compass, it has amazing features and capabilities, making it probably the ultimate compass available. It also includes a few additional compass/angle/elevation related tools. As stated in the app description, it will store the location of your parking spot or hotel, but it will not guide you there (unless you can walk/drive there in one straight line through buildings, etc), and it will not track movement - it is an advanced compass, you will have to manually navigate using the map. If an advanced compass is what you want, this is it - with one issue - calibration is extremely difficult to do. I don't mean calibration of the compass/direction, that works great (and in most cases automatically), I mean horizon and elevation, which mostly affect the HUD, the main feature (as I see it) of this app. If you don't care about those aspects, this is not an issue. To fully calibrate, you have to calibrate six orientations, each time manually positioning your device on two axis at the same time to references you find/create (e.g. horizon level side-to-side and device also perfectly vertical) then pushing the button. It works, but is a real nightmare and a great deal of work to do. I found my camera is oriented perfectly within the case of my devices (iPhone, iPad), but orientation sensors were a bit off (around 5 degrees) on both devices, so it did need calibrating. It would be far better if the app could be calibrated like the many 'bubble level' apps, no external references needed, and super simple to do, and actually far more accurate as well. A quick way to check if calibration is out in one orientation (my way to check, not the authors): lay device flat on a table, and tilt it around very slightly, the angle reading should hit and max at -90 degrees, if not, you're out. Great app (but please redo/improve the calibration method)!.MasterFRVersion: 3.3.6

Awesome!I've been looking for an app that does well offline for travel and navigating in developing countries with no data, or where roaming makes data very expensive. I can bookmark a location and find my way back, see which direction and how far, and bookmark locations from a map when I am online or from raw coordinates. Not holding saved locationI just downloaded this app for remote area use in a very vast forest hunting area, but first I decided to test this on my property because getting lost and not able to find your vehicle is a very scary feeling!!! I put up a post holding it up in the air with a concrete block, I add the current location as taught by the videos, I walked 200 yards away, the app showed the post that it was on the ground in front of me on the ground when the post was 200 yards behind me. At first I thought I did something wrong, I tried it again marking the post area from the ground or to the tip of the post in the air. Still same result, I tried a different target which was my personal vehicle, this time I saw the marker to my truck literally glitch slowly moving to the east. I thought this app would help me get to my vehicle i mean it said off road, wilderness, but I guess they DIDNT MEAN OFFLINE! I was shocked that this app wasn’t dont what I thought it would. This would’ve been a five star app. Unfortunately, like way too many other venues, they seem to think that aggressive intrusive advertisements are the same as having someone stick their finger down your throat! Because I get really pizzed when I’m trying to look down on this app real quick at a stoplight and this full-page dam ad covers the face of the app until you shut it manually! And it doesn’t do it just once it is artificial stupidity as opposed to artificial intelligence! Very disappointed, not recommended at all!I truly feel is a ripoff too unless it syncs up with Google Maps, that would surprise me and if the compass could be set up as a screensaver or wallpaper for the background. Bad orientationThis app doesn't show at all the right orientation of waypoints or stars or planets. It's at least 30 degrees off the right location. I regret buying this. My feedback is that it only looks cool to see those numbers floating around but the actual orientation of objects and the angles don't work as intended..Navigator2010Version: 0

Not useful for real reality...The app is inaccurate because the compass built into the iPhone 5 is inaccurate. One minute it shows the sun 15 degrees to the right of its actual position, the next minute it's 10 degrees too far to the left. Same thing with bearings and waypoints. This being tested far from magnetic interference. Also the battery lasted less than an hour on a full charge and the phone got very hot since all of the sensors were activated at once. This would not be useful for anything beyond taking the dog for a walk. I will stick to my real compass/map. They show more information, more accurately, and in a shorter period of time than any cell phone ever will. Does not seem accurateMy GPS in my 3GS is accurate. My compass is also accurate. But unlike the screen shots shown in this app's description, objects like the moon and sun do not appear as shown ... they are 20 to 40 degrees off. Waypoints that I create do not seem to account for altitude. I created one at work. When I went home (home is uphill from work) my work place was shown to be higher than my home. Disappointing. Wish they had a free version of Spyglass I could have tried before purchasing. Would have saved me a few bucks..AconiteVersion: 0
