Chord! is a chord and scale reference that works with any fretted instrument like guitar, basses, ukulele, banjos,… It computes and analyses all the possible fingerings for chords, scales, and arpeggios.

With Chord!, you can also write a song by simply dragging and dropping chords, transpose it in any key, compute the fingerings with any tuning and generate a beautiful print-ready PDF, etc.

You can also import your existing songs in text format (please note that the app does not ship with songs). You can also link audio tracks from your music library and play them at the same time while adjusting their pitch and/or speed.

You don't even have to know music theory to use it: behind its brute force, the app knows how to handle by itself some subtleties of music to give meaningful results.

If you don't have to be an advanced player to use the app, you can however take a look under the hood and tweak the parameters if you like! Whatever is your level or your instrument, Chord! will adapt and give you the most precise answer.

You can search for any chord, split (like D/F#), or not. If you're a beginner, you can choose the chord from a list, but you can also use the intelligent keyboard to enter the chord as it is written. If this keyboard is a great way to enter chords, it is also very useful to discover and understand how the chords are formed. You can also enter some notes on a neck to find which chords it can be. You can hear how each fingering sounds. Chord arpeggios are also supported, as well as drop voicings (drop 2, drop3, etc.).

The app also ships with the biggest list of named scales (and you can create your own scales). It analyses and presents them with nice interactive views (scale, score, and keyboard). Of course, it can also lay down these scales on a neck (with sound) and compute their fingerings. Like for chords, you can even search for a scale from its fingering!

Each scale can be harmonized (decomposed into chords). You can also enter a sequence of chords to find which scale you can use to improvise onto.

You can use one of the hundred tunings that ship with the app, or you can add your own ones, for any instrument, with or without a capo, even with broken strings if you want!

The app uses custom and unique algorithms to generate charts, easily input complex harmonic structures, extract chords from fingerings, determine finger positions, compute keys of scales, generate chords from scales and find scales that go well with some chords.

For example, Chord! is the right tool in these situations:
• You want to have your songbook available at any time, in your pocket;
• You're a beginner and you want to know how to play easily a D/F# chord;
• One gave you a ukulele and you want to know how to tune it and how to play the G Hawaiian scale;
• You want to know on what scale you can improvise for some chord sequence (and the answer can be different than the Pentatonic minor!);
• You want to print your song and share it with your band.
• You want to experiment with this nice open tuning, moreover with a bottleneck;
• Your little sister can't make bar chords and you want to show her how she can do without bars, with three (little) fingers only;
• You want to impress your little sister by showing her how you can play the same chords with two bars!
• You want to understand how this fingering for C13 is actually a fingering for C13;
• You broke a string and want to know how to play some chords without;
• You want to know how Django managed to play with two and a half fingers.

The app fully supports left-handed instruments.

Main functions of the app:
- Write, transpose, fingerize, print, and share songs;
- Search chord fingerings (or chord charts);
- Search chords from fingerings;
- Search scale fingerings;
- Search scales from fingerings;
- Search chords from scale;
- Search scales from chords.

Chord! App Comments & Reviews

Chord! Positive Reviews

Fantastic tool.I am not a stringed instrument player, they have confounded me for decades (honestly it's a cognitive disconnect). But with this tool I finally feel in command. I tell it what I want to play and how I want to play it and it shows me how to accomplish that goal. I tell it that I want to see what that song would look like on a completely different instrument or tuning and it shows me... Fantastic. The app itself is deep and complex and could benefit from some simplification in the UI. If I had not been someone who has been using computers for music since the 80s I might have been a bit more lost. As it turned out, I still found it challenging. The developer needs better documentation and a good set of how to movies right away. To avoid people getting frustrated. I did have a problem with the app not showing me common fingerings of basic mandolin and ukulele chords but I emailed the developer and got a response that was honest and clear the same day. I am confident he is actively working on this project and dedicated to making it better. Good thing too, because it is great. If this had been available 30 years ago I would be calling myself a string player today. *Update May 30th 2022* Thanks so much for the Apple silicon version! I don’t have a M1 Mac yet, but I will soon and it’s great to know I will be able to use this there as well..Version: 2.8

My most used music app!I have bought well over 30 musician apps to help me become a better musician but this one is my most used app. I use it every day!! Sure it has chord look ups and cool features, but my biggest use case is to use it for live setlists. If you are playing live at a gig, it’s helpful to have your list of songs with their chords and lyrics. This app makes that so easy to do! Just import a regular chord text file and it recognizes which parts are chords and which parts are lyrics. You can then group and reorder all your songs into set lists. What is really cool over other set list apps is the fact that you can customize a chord to the specific one you play and with an easy replace function it allows you to apply your special chord to the entire song! It even has an auto scroll function plus a way to associate the song with an Audio track so you can play along with your own backing track. This app is so powerful, the only downside I see is that it has a steep learning curve and I which there were better tutorials to help people learn what took me a little while to pick up!.Version: 2.6.2

This app is the best for so many reasonsThe first thing that turned me onto this app is when I saw a Sweetwater music demonstration and I saw that you could do a reverse chord & scale search. That is invaluable for those of us who don’t have perfect knowledge of theory or have every chord and scale memorized. It is so immensely helpful when I write a riff (sometimes it’s some crazy jagged odd notes I add in for a color) and I can enter the notes into this app and have it not only tell me what scale it is but also easily see all the other notes connected across the neck. That’s not even really scratching the surface here though. You can also add extra strings to your virtual guitar so regardless of what tuning or how many strings you have (Bass/ or Guitar)it will accommodate you. You can view the notes across the piano or a guitar neck as well. I’m sure other reviewer‘s have more in depth reviews, but those are the things that were the dealbreaker for me and I wouldn’t wanna have to be without this application. Thank you to the developer😉🤜🏻🤛🏻.Version: 2.6.2

Best I’ve found so farThis app works extremely well for what I need. I type out the lyrics of a song I wish to learn, then add the chords. The track I am learning from can be included and played right in the app, which is a big help in transcribing the lyrics and getting all the chord changes in the right places. There are fields to enter info like title and composer, etc. Then as I work on learning to do the song, it can be transposed if I need to fit better into my vocal range (or to accommodate my collaborator). There are more cool features that I don’t use right now, but I’m glad to know they are there when I get ready to learn more. I highly recommend this app for anyone who wants to learn and share songs. My thanks to the dev for making this app and keeping it up to date. Bravo!!.Version: 2.6.2

Wonderful app!Well deserving of 5 stars!I’m brand new to music theory, and am very much a visual learner. This is the perfect app for someone like me, who often needs very detailed examples of self-taught subjects. Every detail of the app seems interwoven & relative. I don’t seem to get confused or needing to refer back to another part that was learned and quickly forgotten. In other words, because this app defines concepts as you see it, it’s very easy to understand and explore the material without getting lost or ahead of yourself. Sorry if I can’t explain it the best way possible, but for those that are visual learners, or perhaps have challenges with attention or memory, this is the music theory app for you!.Version: 2.6.2

Worth it!I don’t really like paying for apps. I don’t know why, maybe I am just old and still think paying for digital things is strange. But this was worth it. Thomas has made an amazing app that I use all the time to store my songs and chords in. Sometimes I am noodling around and I find a chord or voicing that I really like but don’t know what it is; the reverse chord finder helps me find it quickly and save it for later. It has made my noodling sessions so much more productive by not forgetting the next day what that cool sounding chord was. And that just skims the surface for features. Seriously considering buying his other app, songkit, because this app is so smooth..Version: 2.7.4

GET THIS, NOW!I have been playing guitar for about 11 years and I use this app all of the time. It makes for an exceptional reference tool and is worth every penny I paid for it. The app has a great flow and feel to it and the interface is very pleasing visually and functionally. There really isn't anything quite like this app on the App Store. Though this app may not be the greatest for beginners, I still say that this app is a MUST HAVE for ANY guitar player, regardless of skill level, mostly because of its ability to generate tons of chord voicings in whatever tuning you're using. Plus, you can have 10 string tunings for maximum dj0nt. 11/10..Version: 2.6

My favorite music appI’m the type who always asks “why?”, so when I learn & improvise on guitar I like to know the theory behind it. I pull out this app all the time to understand chords I see in tabs or to figure out a weird chord I just came up with. It also does scales, so I can see all the notes of a scale on the fretboard — if I plug in one of those weird chords I made up, it will show me what scales it fits in, so I can try out other chords that might work with it. It’s just invaluable, and the UI is so polished. A must-buy..Version: 2.6.2

Steep learning curveI often use this app to “reverse search chords” when playing new ideas by ear. It would be great if i could immediately save the notes i selected on the neck as a new chord fingering. as it stands, i need to click the fingering area in the top right, and often going through the additional pain of creating a custom fingering (or scrolling endlessly through the generated fingerings looking for the one in inputted on the neck) this app seems very powerful, but i do not yet feel as if i totally know how to use it. more tutorials and guidance would be great..Version: 2.7.10

Finally Someone Got It Right!!I normally don’t do reviews but I had to for this one!! I’ve been searching for years an app that would let me jot down chords to songs I’ve learned, compose them with my custom chords/fingering, show the fret above the words....AND print it out!! Are you kidding me? This is awesome! I’m a developer and I know how much work went into this!! Thank you so much. A bit of a learning curve but not much. Well worth it!! And that’s ON TOP of all the other stuff it does! Lots of songs to compose now!!!.Version: 2.6.2

Best chord app you never knew existed.I’m not fond of the interface but this is one powerful app. I also wish the color coding worked, it doesn’t for some reason and never has for me. I use this for all my stringed instruments, from ukulele to 5 string banjo to 8 string guitar, it works for them all. I find that I’m using this to learn scales and theory way more than tabs. It is in dire need of an update but it’s still totally worth it..Version: 2.6.2

Amazing app - phenomenal lead sheetsBeen playing guitar over 40 years, and have used an iPad as a learning/composing/recording/transcribing/lead sheet creation tool for as long as iPads have existed. This is one of the best apps I’ve ever come across. Everything is quite intuitive, but the online documentation clarifies anything that you can’t figure out from context. I hope the developer continues to support it. I’m extremely impressed..Version: 2.6.2

Impressive FeaturesYes it’s a bit difficult to figure out but you are forgiven! Great Job! btw.. FYI... wouldn’t a C Blues #V scale have a G#? There’s a flatted 5 instead, maybe needs an update? Recommendations: Allow our custom scales and Chords to be searchable from the list. Allow us to chose the Key center in which to reference our custom scales and chords. For example, in A blues I want to modify the Am blues scale with a Robben Ford scale which is a blues scale but swap the flatted 7th with the 6th (great sound btw). After adding this to my customized scales area your app forces the key center to G minor but my intention is to use this scale in a A Blues progression. Wouldn’t it be crazy (in a good way) to allow the user to modify that key center to see what other interesting chords get recommend?.Version: 2.6.2

Truly exceptionalThere is so much low effort app sludge aimed at people learning guitar that buying one is a gamble. Frankly they are cash grabs. This app though has put in the work. Clear and simple. No ads no subscription nonsense and surpasses my expectations in every way. It’s more for musicians who want a reference resource than for hand holding note by note learning..Version: 2.7.9

The best "chord-finder" appI am a pianist, but I use Chord! to help compare and select voicings with my band's guitarist. This app is so well thought-out! It actually knows HOW to build a chord, rather than simply being a dictionary of them. If you have at least a little music-theory background and are willing to spend a few minutes with this app, it will become an indispensable tool..Version: 2.7

Powerful chord appI have been using Chord! For over 4 years and I depend on it when I’m practicing new and old songs. I play in a church band where we play a wide range of worship music from contemporary to old hymns. Many different chords to know and Chord! Has been my go to app..Version: 2.7.9

Best Chord/Scale App Ever!Chord! is by far the best guitar app available. I’ve owned it for several years now and continue to find it extremely useful. It has the best user interface design for any guitar app that I’ve seen as well. Chord! should to be the first app that appears in the App Store when you search “guitar”..Version: 2.6.2

Great update with a bugFinally an update that adapts to bigger screens after all these years! However I can’t turn on iCloud sync. There’s a popup that tells me my iCloud account changed and I need to reactivate it in settings, every time I try to reactivate it in settings..Version: 2.7.1

Must-HaveThis is a must-have App for beginners and intermediate guitar players looking to learn a wide variety of chords AND for advanced players looking to arrange and find new ways to play around with theory. ONLY gripe is that the UX can be a little obtuse at first, but you learn it relatively quickly..Version: 2.7.11

WonderfulThis app is a gem. Since it has so much to offer, there is a bit of a learning curve, but so worth the effort. Also, I had a question early on, and the developer responded right away. Along with iReal Pro, Chord! is a great addition to my music toolbox. Thanks..Version: 2.7.9

Most beautiful appAbsolutely the best app I’ve ever discovered. I’ve been playing guitar for over 50 years nothing beats Chord, nothing even comes close, Chord will ultimately go down in history as the most educational musical/guitar app ever made....Version: 2.7.7

Best Modular Chord AppChord! isn’t just a dictionary of chords - it’s completely customizable down to the tuning and number of strings on the instrument. You can specify quality and every inversion of any chord and Chord! will tell you how to play it - and that’s just the chord features..Version: 2.6.2

SpectacularHad this app since 2014 when majoring in music theory and it does wonders for those are trying to get into music theory. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family..Version: 2.7.2

Fantastic!Besides playing the guitar I play Charango, Ronroco, Vihuela and Cuatro. Finally found application that allows me to make my own custom stringed instruments tuned at my will and with how many strings you have it really finds all the chords! I strongly recommend it! Thanks for this gem!.Version: 2.6.2

Above and beyondThis isn’t some shallow theory/reference app, this is an incredible tool. The apps Depth and customization far exceeds its asking price. Highly recommend for any guitar or key player. Great for experimenting with chord progressions and matching scales. Wonderful app through and trough..Version: 2.6.2

No need of other apps for life timeBest app to learn chords, more than 1000 different scales and scales fingering patterns. I paid and downloaded this before few years but I still use it everyday. Best one..Version: 2.6.2

Thank youTruly amazing work!!!!! I would love to see a tab builder in the future! Thank you for your hard work!.Version: 2.7.9

Superb toolThis app is exactly what I was looking for. If you find yourself grappling with problems like how to efficiently play the D Phrygian Dominant scale on a banjo (as I do) then this is indubitably the app you’ve been looking for..Version: 2.6.2

Use it dailyI use it daily and I can’t recommend it enough..Version: 2.7.11

SupportYou definitely need a user guide to understand how to use this app. There’s one online but developer will not offer a downloadable pdf. Very nice, comprehensive app but I need downloadable pdf for when I’m without WiFi.Version: 2.6.2

THE BESTHoly sh**! This is the best chord app I have ever seen. I used to pay a monthly subscription for one, but this one is even better and the price is AMAZING! Don’t think twice, just get it!.Version: 2.7.8

Scales bugLove this app! I tried many chord/scales apps for guitar playing and this was by far the best. Thanks!.Version: 2.7.8

Chord Search not working…last updated 2 YEARS AGONot able to add chords. The method for doing so, "chord search" simply doesn’t work. I don’t even know how it’s supposed to work but I know it’s definitely not working as it is..Version: 2.6.2

Best App of It’s KindI’ve tried a bunch of apps that do this sort of thing and this is easily the best. You won’t be disappointed.Version: 2.6.2

The Best App For Song WritingSeriously it’s extremely detailed yet remains a pleasure to use..Version: 2.6.2

Great app for guitarist and songwritersExcelent source of chords and scales that save time 👍.Version: 2.6.2

Chords in the scalesWould like to see the chord fingerings in each of the scales.Version: 2.8

Brilliant!The one negative reviewer on here doesn't seem to understand just what this app is doing. This is far more than a limited static database of shapes and way more impressive than any other chord app you're going to find on the App Store. This is like Wolfram Alpha for stringed instruments. If you need an F#11sus2add6 chord, this app will find 85 different ways to play it. If you need to know which chords work for a Eb Neapolitan Minor scale (or hundreds of other scales in any key) this app will find it... On the fly. It won't clutter up your phone with silly pre-made images of chord shapes. The possibilities for customization are astounding. Intervals, finger span, and on and on... This one is a mind-boggler. Well worth it if you're serious about exploring musical possibilities. I use it mainly for the ukulele, which is a very limiting instrument, but this app gets the job done... Every time..Version: 1.0.1

Excelent AppThis is a very good App, that needs a replica or duplicate app for instruments like: keyboards. App needs update for iPhone XS Max.Version: 2.6.2

Needs update to ios13The app is very good for me.Version: 2.6.2

Thanks for the update!At last this app is living up to the promise of a truly professional tool. For example, trying to find the correct chords in DADGAD to accurately store Kashmir was just about impossible, now doable and fairly easily. Keep up the good work, there is still progress to be made in simplifying the user interface, and I know you are up to the challenge! I'm giving five stars to express the wide scope of improvements represented in this update, the program is moving much closer to becoming my only transcribing tool. I have been playing Guitar and programming and working in the computer industry for about the same length of time, since 1982, and am still amazed when I see something I never dreamed would come during my lifetime suddenly arrive on my iPad!.Version: 2.5

Elegant UI, Immense Content, Simply Fantastic!As a long time player, I was looking for something that could help my theory understanding expand as well as provide reference for modes over squirrelly chords. The app is brilliant in it's simplicity, controls, presentation and logic. I'm rarely deeply impressed, but this is truly a world class treasure that is now on all my iOS devices. While it does not offer any deep treatise on theory, the linkages between the cords, their harmonics and scalar modes, provides all the necessary substance with no filler. No long winded blathering, just the facts (all easy to find, thoughtfully related and cross referenced) Thank you for offering such a fantastic, easy to use, artistically thoughtful app!.Version: 2.1

Brilliant AppThe interface is bizarre in places. You often can't figure out how to do something. It's unlike anything you've used.... but you'll FORGIVE every one of those things when you realize how this app works. It constructs and manages chords and scales in the most versatile way I've ever seen. It doesn't just have chord and scale charts but it will "construct" chords and scales dynamically according to your playing and harmonizing needs. Kudos to the developer for going way beyond what anybody else has, plus giving you a good songbook so you can build songs using these wonderful tools, right inside the app. Be patient with it, and you'll be rewarded..Version: 2.5.1

Really solid and well done!!Like a lot of people I have bought many scale and chord apps. They have all been useful and I've learned a great deal from them. This app really brings together the best combination of musical utility and interface usability. The layout is very intuitive and shows that a lot of time and attention was put into its design. The charts and diagrams are clean and readable. There are many options for viewing both chords and scales and the sound is very good. I have just gotten started with the app so I will have more to say about it but so far this is definitely my first choice for studying chords and scales..Version: 1.1.1

Best Guitar App!This app is very customizable, and it looks good too! I mostly just use it to look up chords, and it's worth it to me just for that feature, but it has a lot of other features to. I really like to play with the different voices that it generates. It always throws me chord shapes I'd never considered! I especially like that the chords are generated based on your tuning, so no matter what crazy tuning you are in, you can still find the chord you need right away. Most other chord resources are E standard or s.o.l. Also, the developer is constantly improving little things to make it all the more easy to use..Version: 2.1

Apple Music?Good app but the songbook doesn’t recognize the songs I’ve downloaded from Apple music..Version: 2.6.2

Full of features, & powerfulThis app was my got for writing down lyrics. But also I used it to put gospel songs into for practice. It is clean and easy. If I would suggest anything(if they do not exist) it would be YouTube tutorials. Only because there are so many features and at first it may be hard. For myself figuring out how to put capo tunings. I bought song kit today so I might not be using Chords! Anymore. Switching up because I want to change keys etc more and just songkit looks more powerful. Much love and respect to this developer. I wish there were more apps and developers like this. Today I think I will export a song or two onto my PC/Mac and learn more about the way the app structures songs. Usually on my iPhone or iPad I cut and paste and import from guitar tab sites which often is alittle messy( not apps fault) sometimes a mouse and keyboard helps. But the apps ability to auto detect cut and pasted songs is great I wish I knew about it earlier on. Other guitar tab apps are disappointing and or expensive. Why do I need a monthly subscription to lookup or use user generated guitar tabs/chords? Chords is the best alternative to such sites IMHO Cut and paste and make a few songs collections. Done.Version: 2.7.9

Love this app so muchBeen using it for a year or two, love it!.Version: 2.7.7

No way to hear your songI like the app’s interface, and it lets me build my own chord fingerings but when I build a song I would want to hear how it sounds too, especially with my own fingerings. There doesn’t seem to be a way to audio play my created song in this app. The play button only scrolls the song sheet. Not worth the price I paid..Version: 2.6.2

LostI’m sure this is a good app, but I’m having a hell of a time doing anything productive with it. I just can’t figure it out..Version: 2.6.2

Please optimize for iPhone X screenNice app but needs to be optimized for iPhone X screen.Version: 2.6.2

AmazingBut the thing wrong is that it doesn't actually have a built in tuner. Also, it should have an audio with the sample song so you can et a better understanding..Version: 2.0.1

OutstandingI've been looking for an app that does this for years. It functions nearly exactly how I envisioned it in my mind. It's dead simple to create with, and the exported product is cleanly designed. While it's obviously great for writing your own tabs, it also satisfies my annoyances with the tabs of others. Not everybody creates their tabs in the same style... some only give chords for half the song, some list chords that aren't right, or they format them totally different. This app allows you to copy them in, edit to your liking, and then export back into whatever you use for tab management. This truly might be one of the best designed apps I've seen in quite a while..Version: 2.0.1

Chord Exclamation Mark!Adding the "!" to the app name is no exaggeration. This is the chord app to beat all chord apps. A huge amount of thought has gone into this and it is by far the best app to help illustrate chord and scale structures to beginners, and it is a handy encyclopedia for seasoned pros. Someone said it is great for teachers and they were absolutely right. It's also good for gigging musicians, students, and beginners just looking to find the right chord, scale or harmony for a musical idea..Version: 2.5.1

Fantastic!Hands down the best app for collecting and organizing songs, figuring out chords and scales, as well as transposing to different keys and tunings. It's great that it's available for both iPhone and iPad, however a Mac version would be really handy too. Hopefully soon!.Version: 2.5.1

Wow!!!I purchased this app for chords and scales references but I discovered a very great app to create chords sheets. This app is simply amazing!!! There is so many settings when you need to create a PDF file from a chords sheets. You can import Chord Pro files type or Text files. You can use drag n drop to add chords into your lyrics. Now, I only used this app to create PDF files for use with Music Binder. Congratulation to the authors of this app. I will recommend it to everyone..Version: 2.5.1

Best Chord and Scale app for teachers and students!Highly recommended - I use this every lesson on the iPad, and use the iPhone app when meeting potential students..Version: 2.5.1

Bravo!At last, I found it. Perfect to use as my songwriting companion. Love it..Version: 2.1

Perfect.Great and to the point, teaches you everything you hunger to know..Version: 2.0.1

Astonishing!Such useful application! I am a musician myself, and the application is very convenient in time where I have an inspiration or questions! Recommended for all musicians!.Version: 2.0

Excellent !!I love this app ! It is very easy to use and you have every chords, scales and infos you can deam of ! Moreover, the app developpers really hear what users have to say to improve their product. I'll recommand this app to any guitar player. Keep up your good work :).Version: 1.0.1
