WHAT TO EXPECT:
Glacier National Park in Montana protects some of the most visually stunning mountain terrain anywhere, with giant mountain peaks, above tree-line alpine terrain and glacier fed lakes feeding alpine to valley length waterfalls. This tour also now includes visiting the beautiful Many Glacier section of the park, with terrific hikes and lake cruising available.
Though the drive is only 50 miles, expect to spend most of a full day taking in the mountain views, alpine flower filled meadows and waterfalls. While the views are numerous, the pullouts aren’t. We’ll give you plenty of notice so both the driver and passengers can relax and feel comfortable about what’s ahead.
The engineering marvels along the drive like Triple Arches and the Tunnels are visually impressive.
The Many Glacier section offers a superb and stunning collection of views and activities. Hiking options vary from rewarding uphill efforts to Grinnell Glacier, or gentler loop walks around alpine lakes. Use the cruisers for the pure sightseeing enjoyment or to shorten some of the longer hikes.
The tour begins and ends on the drive to and from Going-to-the-Sun Road, or the Many Glacier section, or join anywhere along the route.
WHAT YOU’LL SEE:
Highlights along the tour route include
• West Glacier
• Apgar
• Lake McDonald Lodge
• The Loop
• Weeping Wall
• Triple Arches
• Oberlin Bend
• Logan Pass
• Tunnels
• Big Bend
• Wild Goose Island
• Lunch Creek
• Haystack Falls
• Bird Woman Falls
• Siyeh Bend
• St Mary
CHARGING:
++ Continued use of GPS/Location Services in the background increases battery usage. We strongly recommend taking a cigarette style (DC outlet) car charge to keep your phone charged, and avoid charging through the USB port.
AUDIO:
Listen directly from your phone or connect to the car stereo via Bluetooth. Avoid using a direct connection to the USB port of a rental vehicle as this can cause audio issues. The audio can play through your car’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto display, please note that the map will display only on your phone.
IPADS:
** iPad models must include a GPS chip. Please note only the iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models of iPad contain a GPS chip. Wi-Fi-only iPad models have limited location service capabilities and are unable to play commentary automatically.
DOWNLOADING:
The apps are larger in size in order to work offline. You must download the app ahead of time over Wi-Fi (recommended) or cellular data. Once downloaded, you can tour offline without cell service.

Going to the Sun Road GyPSy App Comments & Reviews
Going to the Sun Road GyPSy Positive Reviews
This is the BEST series of APP’s!I highly recommend this series of APPs of you are planning on visiting these parks! This was a marriage saver!! If you ever struggle on what and when to see sites, while planning multiple National Park visits during peak seasons, then this is the APP for you! It takes planning to the next level! I purchased The Yellowstone/Teton and after purchased Glacier as a separate APP. It will sync to your radio so that all can hear and includes a map. The narrator was amazing, he did not talk too much and the signal was NEVER lost even though our navigation and phone signals were weak. He provided interesting commentary on the National Parks, land marks and geography. You will not be disappointed and will not need to hire a tour guide!.Version: 2.7.0
Indispensable for auto touringWow!! This is the second year we have used GypsyGuide, throughout the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park’s GoingToTheSun Highway. It worked flawlessly with smartphone connected by Bluetooth to car’s speaker system. Just like going on a guided tour in your private vehicle. It’s display on your phone gives your exact location and where the next audio point of interest is located. I highly recommend all versions that we used..Version: 2.1.1
Liked but didn’t loveLiked: Tone of narrators voice Length of talks for each area of interest Automatic start at each point of interest Tracking the car along the route Disliked: Topics chosen (I’d prefer more talks about nature, the discussion was mostly about building the road, number of cars which came the first year, after the narrator said he wasn’t going into the details of the lake length, depth, etc. If you’re going to say you don’t like numbers, then don’t tell me about numbers: how much the workers were paid, # of years it took to build the road, how many cars visited the first year) Hokey tone the narrator took at times, self-deprecating has a time and place, but not on my audio tour. Just the facts ma’am. No info given on parking tips/tricks when that’s the worst part of the park, the Logan’s Pass parking lot was full so we missed it completely. Fact that he also narrates other tours. If this is the tone for all of the tours can I switch the voice like on my Garmin? 😂 English lady or Australian guy please. Tips/tricks on how to get a hotel room last-minute, where to go swimming, best food in the park, etc..Version: 2.7.0
Excellent guideJust used it today for a round trip from West Glacier. The commentary was easy to understand, informative and well said. The gps location use allows the app to know where exactly it is and the comments about views, turn offs, parking and hike access are precise and easy to use. On the return we heard the same comments in reverse order with some appropriate differences. Overall, excellent purchase..Version: 2.1.1
Outstanding! If there is a Gypsy app for the place you are going to visit - get it! Don’t hesitate at all. This app guides you in and around an area unlike anything else. It knows where you are, which way you’re headed, and lets you know what’s coming next. It gives history and background, and best yet once you have downloaded it you do not need internet service to use it!! Try it - you’ll Love it!.Version: 2.7.0
Great value for money! We honestly enjoyed this narration far more than the tour we took of the going to the sun road and this was a fraction of the cost! Good mix of information shared, perfect timing based on gps locations as well. Would absolutely recommend downloading it before arriving at glacier due to poor cell service there. Also remember to have a charger in the car with you!.Version: 2.7.0
An absolute essential for self drivers thru the parkWe downloaded this guide and it actually felt like we had someone in our car with us. We listened to it going west to east and east to west on the Going-to-the-Sun road and never got tired of it. We will be looking for additional guides for future locations and will absolutely purchase more of these!.Version: 2.7.0
Really adds to the experience, even if you’ve been there beforeI found Gypsy Guides on my fifth or sixth trip to Glacier and even having been there several times it was a great addition. Loved having David along. So glad to see there are Gypsy Guides for upcoming trips and wish I had known about them on prior trips. Pro tip: Make sure the app is downloaded while you’re on good WiFi. Make sure it plays when your phone is in airplane mode before you get off the good internet service. Dave gives you lots of heads up for turns or sites you might want to see. Really great enhancement. Thanks Gypsy Guides! Keep making more!.Version: 3.0.1
Don’t take the trip without Gypsy GuideWe stumbled across the app and tried it out. Loved it. Gave lots of insight on the trip and it was convenient to use in the car. The stories varied a little bit as we reversed our direction back down the mountain. We will try this for other parts of our trip..Version: 2.7.0
So fabulous and easy to use!Takes you through every important stop and turn along the Going to the Sun road. Allows you to make the most of the trip with no effort. Definitely worth it!.Version: 2.7.0
Wow! What a Great Trip Using This AppI’ve downloaded a variety national park touring apps over the years and have even paid a high price. This app is the best. We were referring to the guide like someone we knew before the trip was over. Works in background as you drive..Version: 2.7.0
So useful! This guide was perfect! Great timing and I learned and saw so much more than if I were to have just drove through on my own. I am on a goal to hit all of the national parks and will be using these guides for the ones that are available..Version: 2.1.1
Excellent Narration and informationWe thoroughly enjoyed using the app! His voice was enjoyable-information spot on with the GPS and amusing little bits of humor and Lots of wonderful information! We are now using the app for Yellowstone and Tetons! Thanks for this great guide!.Version: 2.7.0
Don’t leave home without it!My travel companion had used this in Utah and told me it was a must. She was right! It was almost like the narrator knew our questions ahead of time. Won’t travel a national park without it!.Version: 2.7.0
Timely and excellentWhat a great app! The information was timely, relevant, and enriched our Going To The Sun drive. Would highly recommend and look forward to using it on another trip..Version: 2.7.0
At Glacier National Park.We just completed our stay at Glacier. We would have been lost with our Gypsy guide. The information we learned and the route guidance was invaluable..Version: 2.0.5
A nice addition to a great rideWell done short narratives. Especially enjoyed historic bits. Made a great ride even better. I’ll be looking for your other tours. Thanks for making the effort.Version: 2.7.0
My personal tour guideThis app is awesome! It detects where you are and narrates great facts as well as suggestions for stops. Loved it. Also bought the Yellowstone and Teton apps..Version: 3.0.1
Love the appWe learned so much and talked to two other people who recommended the App. Is it Bob, Phil, or someone else? We love it!.Version: 2.7.0
Excellent commentary and performance!Like having a knowledgeable private guide. Thank You!.Version: 2.7.0
ExcellentBest audio app out there. Just took a ride in The Road to the Sun in West Glacier National Park. Used it in Hawaii on The Road to Hana. Excellent.Version: 2.7.0
What a Deal!Going to the Sun Road is our 7th Gypsy app and we've loved each one. Besides letting us know where to stop and what to see, the guide, who after all our adventures feels like a friend, provides a comprehensive understanding of the history and geography of the area. Can't wait to see where he'll take us next!.Version: 1.1
Great Info!Loaded and played with before trip, day of trip paired phone with vehicle, got to park...didn't work! No worries...turned off Blue Tooth and phone was plenty loud enough for two to listen to even with a LifeProof case on. Great info. Great app for a reasonable price (and I'm a cheapskate!) Been to the park several times before but it's been a while. There were several awesome places we would not have stopped if we had not been listening! The history lessons were wonderful! And there were a few we stopped that were pretty cool that the audio didn't tell us about. All in all a great trip and a great app. I will def be checking into more of your apps specifically the Yellowstone & Tetons app and The Big Island apps! Any chance you could get a Kauai app ready before early Dec.? Thanks! Things that would make me rate this app higher: 1. Add narration for the Many Glaciers Road 2. Maybe add that The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado is the hotel that actually inspired the book The Shining, that The Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite Ntl Park inspired the sets for the interior for the movie production and that Timberline Lodge is the lodge on "side of Mt. Hood" used for exterior shots during the filming. Sorry, nit picky I know, but I'm a history buff. 3. More trail info (round trip or one way distance, altitude gained, difficulty, bathrooms on trail, etc.) A BIG kudos to you for the ones you did point out..Version: 1.1
OMG: spectacular! We loved this app. It gave us so much more information than we would ever have known. We drive the road two round trips and listened all the time because we picked up things we missed. I felt sorry for the others passing us by because they didn't know to stop. Love this app!.Version: 1.1
A fantastic companion to a beautiful drive.Made the drive come alive. Well narrated, with interesting stories about the park and road. And technically, the gps integration was excellent. I only wish they had more areas..Version: 1.1
Very informative appThis app was very informative. My entire family (kids included) listened intently to the narrator. We would have learned never learned all of the factual information without this app..Version: 1.1
Great app highly recommendPerfect for those who want to drive thru and understand what you are looking at and the history notes - very informative!.Version: 1.1
Download Before Your Trip! This is the second Gypsy tour I downloaded. The first one was a Yellowstone tour which I paid for, but couldn’t download because of very poor internet service at the Yellowstone Canyon lodge by Xanterra. The files tend to be large, ie over 150 mb, so it is essential that you download these apps where you have fast internet service without file size restrictions. The app doesn’t work until you are near the park by GPS. Each section or story is activated by GPS. I downloaded the Glacier National/ Going to the sun road app at home. I couldn’t test it until I got to the park. I found the app a useful but limited guide as it only included going to the sun road, and didn’t include other sections, like Many Glacier Road. I still found it helpful..Version: 2.7.0
Great CompanyWe first used the Hawaii version of the app and found it added so much to driving around the islands. Then Yellowstone did not disappoint. The commentary and recommended stops are perfect for your road trip. Of course you could do without this app, but this just makes it so much better. I love the history, both human and evolutionary. Unfortunately road to sun was closed due to fire and we had to skip. But given previous experience I don’t think you can go wrong with this app..Version: 2.1.5
