NOTES

Download the app on Wi-Fi from your network at home or use any free Wi-Fi network. Because the app is filled with audio commentary and maps, its larger than "normal" apps. Many phone/data networks may block the download because of size - so it's important to download over a Wi-Fi network.

CHARGING:
++ Continued use of GPS/Location Services in the background increases battery usage. We strongly recommend taking a cigarette style (DC outlet) car charge to keep your phone charged, and avoid charging through the USB port.

AUDIO:
Listen directly from your phone or connect to the car stereo via Bluetooth. Avoid using a direct connection to the USB port of a rental vehicle as this can cause audio issues. The audio can play through your car’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto display, please note that the map will display only on your phone.

IPADS:
** iPad models must include a GPS chip. Please note only the iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models of iPad contain a GPS chip. Wi-Fi-only iPad models have limited location service capabilities and are unable to play commentary automatically.

DOWNLOADING:
The apps are larger in size in order to work offline. You must download the app ahead of time over Wi-Fi (recommended) or cellular data. Once downloaded, you can tour offline without cell service.

Icefields Parkway GyPSy Guide App Comments & Reviews

Icefields Parkway GyPSy Guide Positive Reviews

WORTH EVERY PENNY (and more)I have never felt that an app was so valuable that it was worth the time spent writing a review... until now. I write this only to strongly encourage anyone visiting the Canadian Rockies to seriously consider purchasing the entire package—Icefields Pkwy, Banff,Jasper, and Lake Louise. My wife and I spent many hours researching and planning our trip to the Rockies and we still would have missed several key stops had it not been for this app. Even the Fairmont concierge’s recommendations were not sufficient. There are so many jaw-dropping stops, that it would be nearly impossible for a first-time visitor to plan a trip that properly balances time and value of each stop. The narrator provides just the right amount of commentary and detail to allow you to make an informed decision about what to see and how long to stay. In addition, the app works in real time with a phone gps, so there is no need to carry a map and count kilometers when you should be enjoying the spectacular views. I keep thinking of all I would have missed on this trip if not for this app. My wife and I are truly grateful..Version: 2.1.5

Must have for your Icefields Parkway trip!I read about this app online before we left the US for Canada, and went ahead and purchased it and had it downloaded when we got there. Be sure to do this before your drive as there is no cell phone service along the drive. I was afraid my kids (boys ages 13, 16, and my 21 yr old nephew) would think it was cheesy and not want me to play it. Boy was I wrong! They quickly named the narrator “Clyde the Guide”, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the history as well as learning about upcoming stops and whether they were “must see” or “if you have time”. The narrator was fun to listen to, and made the time pass so quickly. We drove from Banff to Jasper, had lunch, then drove back and we listened both ways. The talking points were similar going both ways, but not exactly the same. It sure made our 12 hour round trip fun!! We are looking for more guides to use on our future travels!!.Version: 2.1.1

Absolutely greatThis app is super well done. The narrator is super fun to listen to and it really made our trip more enjoyable. He points things that we would have never noticed and is very educational. His suggestion for hikes are really good and more than once he helped us optimize the trip. Kudos!!! Highly highly recommended!!!! One note to the vendor: you should seriously consider redoing the Banff townsite app. The different narrator is pretty good and I would kill to have his voice but not as fun as the the one who did the rest of the package. Also - the tour itself is not as good as the others, as sometimes it would just tell you to “turn right “ without letting you know what you would be able to see there (ie if you do not follow the full tour in one day, it’s not as efficient as the other ones). Still kudos to the creators!.Version: 2.1.1

Like having a personal guide in your car!I rarely take time to write reviews, but this app deserves it. I downloaded the Canadian Rockies 4-pack app, which included this one. We did very little planning for our trip. We basically got in the car in Banff and went where this app told us to go. The guide provides very interesting info while you are driving and at the stops. We definitely saw things that we wouldn't have noticed or bothered to stop at if just using a map. Love that it tracks us with GPS to give us info at just the right time and works without cell service. To top it off, the narrator is actually enjoyable to listen to and is like have a personal guide in your car (different narrator for the Banff Townsite app than for the other 3 but he was good also!)..Version: 2.1.1

Best app for traveling with childrenThe GyPSy Guide is the greatest app ever. Traveling with two small children makes it hard and expensive to go on guided tours. This app was perfect for the car as we toured Banff, Yoho, and the Icefields. It provided us interesting and helpful tips of where to stop (if we so desired), what we would be seeing, and historical/geographical information. Our oldest (10-years old) was obviously listening as he asked questions later in the trip on things he had heard in the narration. This app is worth every penny and we will continue purchasing as we show our kids the great sites of our country!.Version: 2.8.0

5 star app if you’re in the Canadian RockiesAs others have said, this is a MUST have app while in the Canadian Rockies. It would have been a different trip without it. Not sure where to suggest to the developer, but if you could put an image with good weather. We just had a rainy drive in the 1st week of July. We heard to see “that mountain and at times could not see anything due to the weather. It would be a 10 star app to see some of them for the unlucky travelers like us. Again, fantastic job with your app. Amazing history, must do hikes/stops, and just enough talk to not take away from the trip. Great job!!!.Version: 2.8.0

Your own tour guide! This app is fabulous!!! We used the Calgary/Banff, Banff/Lake Louise and the Icefields/Jasper. You can buy one app that covers all of them, but we weren’t sure we were going to the Icefields so we bought them separately. No need for internet after you’ve downloaded the app. You just open the app, it knows where you are and he tells you things to see, history and other fun facts and stories. There are even different stories for your return drive! We stopped many places that we would not have seen if not for this app. I wish there was a GyPSy app for everywhere!!!!.Version: 3.0.1

Best App for Touring! With 5 of us in the car, driving from Jasper to Lake Louise, we decided to try the Gypsy tour app. I cannot say enough about how well thought out, informative, interesting, and humorous it was. The information comes in short informative pieces of 1-3 minutes and then the tour guide is silent in between these narratives to give passengers time to talk, discuss, and marvel. My 80+ year old parents were along and they absolutely LOVED how clear it was.... and only wished they would have had Gypsy on all their prior touring trips. It’s just that good!.Version: 2.8.0

Fantastic Travel CompanionHappened to pick up a brochure on Gypsy guided GPS tours just minutes before we headed down the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff. The day was so fantastic not only because of the natural beauty, but by the addition of this guided tour. It’s like having a super nice and informed friend in the backseat. Based on that experience we purchased the Lake Louise and Yoho National Park tour and had an equally wonderful day. The tips and history... and the driving directions are wonderful..Version: 2.8.0

Kudos!Oh my God. This is so well done. I can’t believe how the narration was so in sync with the driving. We did the Icefields Parkway today and the recommendations were invaluable. I really learned a lot about glaciers! Last time I drove without this app and I felt blind without it. Please keep it up and create more! Was looking for South Dakota; Badlands! I never gush over apps but WOW. Thanks Gypsy! Also loved the voice guy..Version: 3.0.1

Get it !!!This was so helpfull and informative and just enough speaking. If you are having a road trip like the one we had best one to get while we had a drive from Calgary to Jasper . Had also downloaded other ones Calgary to jasper, icefeilds, Jasper, Lake louise. This also works offline which was great while we driving through icefeilds pkwy where there was no cellular reception..Version: 2.1.5

Highly RecommendWe downloaded the Icefields tour in Alberta, and we were so happy we did. It gave driving directions, interesting stories, and helped us decide which stops to make along the way. At one point it stated to slow down, because big horn sheep are often in the road up ahead. Guess what, the sheep were in the road!.Version: 2.8.0

IndespensibleIncredible app which makes a road trip more enjoyable and productive. Accurately identifies where you are and accurately pairs information to your exact position. Content with history and geology ties together your experience. Informing you about upcoming sites with recommendations is fantastic. I will purchase for all future road trips..Version: 2.8.0

Saved our trip! The smoke blew in 2 days before the trip we had booked a year in advance. This guided tour saved us. Even though we could see everything due to the smoke we still kept our activists and this guide had the driving tour so much more enjoyable. Thank you for saving our trip..Version: 2.1.5

Best app everI purchased the Canadian Rockies bundle and it was worth every penny and then some! We called the narrator “Steve” and he became an integral part of our trip. We made many stops at his advice and were so glad we did. On the parts of our trip where he didn’t have a tour, we felt lost and bored! Haha! What a great app..Version: 2.8.0

Best way to keep kids looking out the windowNo matter how Stunning the views are, kids are drawn to their screens inside the car but with this app playing, the whole family was engaged and excited to hear what the narrator would say next. Worth every penny!.Version: 2.8.0

Awesome Adventure! We used this guide on our day trip across the Icefields Parkway. It was informative and fun! It also gave us a few new ideas of places to stop that we had not heard of. Would definitely recommend this to others looking to enhance their road trip!.Version: 2.1.1

Well worth itThis tour was well worth the $5. It made our trip so much better, and there were many things we only saw because of the tour. Definitely download over wifi if possible..Version: 2.1.5

Fantastic app - great guideThe app was very useful in describing the sites, guiding you to great places to see some hidden gems, giving history of people who explored the area, and some basic geology lessons. Made the drive through the beautiful wilderness even better..Version: 2.1.1

Banff to Lake Louise, Icefields Parkway and JasperWe enjoyed our visit to the Canadian Rockies because of this GyPSy tour app!!! It was so helpful, informative and even funny with the stories Mr Gypsy man has added to make his tour more interesting. We had a great, inexpensive tour at our own pace. Highly recommended!.Version: 2.1.1

Magical!Driving the Icefields parkway with this app running was almost magical! The amount of info was just right and the combination of geological history and stories of human endeavor was excellent. I’ll now always check for gypsy tours wherever I travel!.Version: 2.1.5

Loved the appGreat app made drive so interesting and fun. Wish we had it both ways but had issues getting it downloaded. Be sure to install where you have good wi fi.Version: 2.0.6

It's awesome! There is no reason why someone should do this drive without this app. Delivered more than what I expected. Added so much context to everything along the way!.Version: 2.1.1

Awesome companion for the ParkwayThe information provided made for an even more memorable tour of the route. The tips for places to stop and what to look for are great. Highly recommend the guide..Version: 2.8.0

Great AppThis app made our trip through the ice fields amazing. Whenever we had questions the narrator jumped in just in time to answer them. Totally worth the $!.Version: 3.0.1

Made the Icefields Parkway 100% betterI can only say one thing....Get This App. Some humor , sarcasm, history, geology......it was absolutely fantastic. The narrator is incredible! Thank you.Version: 3.0.1

Gypsy Guide toursThe Gypsy Guide tours app is a phenomenal way to travel through Banff, Jasper, Icefields and Lake Louise. There’s the perfect amount of audio. Tips are helpful. Background info is interesting. The guides voice is pleasant. Excellent!!!.Version: 2.1.1

Great recommendationWe were recommended this ap before our drive from Banff to Jasper. So glad we listened!!.Version: 2.1.5

Great productThe app was great and Kept family engaged much better. We missed “Steve “ as we named our guide thru stretches..Version: 2.1.1

Absolutely download this App!Great history and geology lessons along with accurate descriptions of hikes and vantage points along the way..Version: 2.1.5

GreatWe had all 4 apps for the Canadian Rockies up to jasper. Learned so much and enjoyed the jokes and history. Will use agin for other destinations. Named the guide Hugo.......Version: 2.1.1

Gypsy guideWe used these guides all through Canada and they are fantastic. Well worth the money!.Version: 2.1.5

Always Remember my First! We first heard about GyPSy Guide when we went from Banff to Jasoer. We found it incredibly informative and entertaining. When there’s something to see (or a hike) “Fred” tells you when, what, how... and if it’s worth doing. When there’s nothing much to specifically look at, he’ll fill time with historical stories, oddities, lore, geology, biology, etc! So on our first trip to Hawaii, when I really didn’t know where we were or what to see or do, I got the island package and first used it on Kauai. I really can’t say enough superlative words about the app. As good (or better?) even then the jasper road one. While it was more obvious on the road to Jasper when there was a waterfall or viewpoint, how it worked because there was only one road, it worked just as beautifully with choices of places and directions and limited time. “Fred” helped us choose where to go, gave us lots of information about the history, culture, geology, and flora/fauna and weather. It tells you what is a must see and what to do or pass up depending on time. He speaks with humor and has a good voice. I like how he reminds of previous stories and continues them at various points. It was great for our 2 days on Oahu and then the 7 days on the Big Island. “Fred” even did a great job of explaining not only what to see in Volcano National Park and how to use our limited time wisely, but also about the important geology, history and biology related to the park. I seriously will purchase every single one available for every road trip or vacation we do from now on!!!!.Version: 3.0.1

Love itIt was so great. Just followed the talk, you won't miss a thing..Version: 2.0.6

GreatVery nice Has all things in the Icefields Parkway Wonderful app.Version: 2.1.1

Superb!!As prior review mentioned, iTunes was initiated each time we resumed the tour, but even so this was a superb way to drive through unfamiliar territory. Truly felt as though we had our own personal guide with us. He was easygoing and allowed for plenty of time to make turns or change lanes. Commentary was interesting and varied throughout the trip. I purchased 3 of these for the Canadian Rockies and was pleased beyond belief! Will certainly recommend this to everyone and search to see which new locales you offer at the start of any future trips we take. Thank you for a fantastic touring app!!! One suggestion: perhaps there could be a page that lists the stops in written format so one can judge where we are along the route and gauge time accordingly. Otherwise quite remarkable. Would have certainly passed by fantastic stops without even knowing they were there....Version: 1.4

Excellent but bugsWe loved the commentary of this tour. It was very informative and made our drive so much more interesting. However there was a bug with the app that made it frustrating. I am using an iPhone 5 and sync the Bluetooth to the car sound system. Each time a commentary would open to play, it would trigger my iTunes and start playing the first song in my iTunes Library. I would have to stop iTunes and press play on the commentary. We tried multiple changes with the phone settings but could not make this stop happening. The tour is so good I went through the hassle to hear it anyway. However if you were driving alone and had this same bug there is no way you would be able to manage the pause play and drive. This only happened when we were driving and the commentary comes up automatically, not if I am manually listening to the tour from my room. This same thing happened with all three of the Banff tours we downloaded..Version: 1.4

Excellent! Well worth downloadingJust finished our Icefields Parkway trip yesterday. This app was very helpful! A very good amount of information without being over bearing or annoying. Also very good how it prioritised some stops over others and gave realistic time estimates for each stop. We actually drove up the road one day and back the next and were impressed to find that it wasn't just all the same information played in reverse, but a different take on the route depending on the direction of travel. Made the second pass just as enjoyable as the first. Excellent use of the technology which worked very well with our car stereo. 5 stars!.Version: 1.4

Informational Narrative. While making our way through the scenic Ice Fields Parkway, the informative yet entertaining narrator taught our family quite a bit throughout the drive. By pointing out landmarks and points of interest, we were able to observe and learn more about the beautiful Parkway landscape than we would see by ourselves. The history lessons are easy to understand and interesting for the whole family to learn about. Our kids enjoyed it just as much as my husband and I did and we all were very glad to have the inside scoop on the drive. The app is well worth the download..Version: 2.0.4

Very useful, well worth the price! My wife and I used this app for our drive up to jasper. It was well worth the price and would have been worth even more. It worked flawlessly and the timing of the information was very accurate. There were 2 or 3 instances when it seemed like the recording had left and right confused, but it wasn't a big deal. Currently this only works from Banff to Jasper, but it would be nice to have this work the other way too. Also, it would be handy to have a progress bar to show you how far along the road you've made it. All in all, great app!.Version: 1.0

This App Is Awesome! My husband and I used this app on the Icefields Parkway and Jasper National Park tours and we LOVED this app. The commentary was very informative and humorous. The directions were perfect and I loved the additional, well researched, information on geography and history of the areas. The help section is the best I've ever seen on an app. I initially had a problem with it playing automatically, but restarted it per the instructions in the help section and it worked seamlessly on my iPhone 5s. I did like how you could play manually as well. We look forward to using this app on another driving tour..Version: 1.4

Worked great! We used the Banff-Lake Louise and Icefields Parkway tours on our trip to the Canadian Rockies. We downloaded the apps using the wifi at our hotel, which took around 5 minutes. We loved the feature that you could use these apps as an international traveller with no cell coverage. By using these apps, we learned a lot more about the area than had we just driven by ourselves. We also found neat trails we would have otherwise never done. This app is definitely worth it..Version: 1.2

5 stars for content, 3 stars for functioning of appThe commentary was very enjoyable and informative. However, the playback was buggy on my iPhone 6s- I had to constantly monitor the phone and press the play button to restart the commentary since it wouldn't restart automatically when we reached the part when there was supposed to be commentary (per app map display). I think we missed several parts of the commentary because I would get distracted - when I remembered to check my phone and press play on the app, the commentary often started in the middle of a sentence. If someone were driving by themself, they would have missed the entire commentary..Version: 1.4

Great AppIf you are visiting any location thar the GyPSy guides are available I highly recommend them. we are just finishing our Canadian Rockies visit where I used 3 of guides. They were outstanding giving use historical data, fun facts as well as a well thought out travel guide. What made the guides so impressive is the GPS driven app allowed us to start and stop per our travel plans and the app just picks up exactly each day from your current location. Thanks for an enjoyable tours..Version: 1.3

GyPSy guide reviewGyPSy guide to the Icefields Parkway is fantastic! It's like having a knowledgable and entertaining guide in the car with you for the entire ride. It's very easy to use. It works in both directions with new information for each drive. It doesn't use your cellphone data, only the GPS, so you don't need an extended data plan. This one of the best apps I've ever used! I hope the company expands their repertoire to many more tourist areas. I can't wait to try the Hawaii guides this winter..Version: 1.2

Great app!We drove the Icefields Parkway last week in our tour of the Canadian Rockies. The sights were unbelievable, but so enriched because we were guided by this app. It led us to the spots which were worth stopping to see, and suggested bypassing ones which were not. The best part is that it is powered by GPS rather than cellular. It also guided us when we made some wrong turns. Well worth the money!.Version: 1.4

LOVE LOVE LOVEThis guided tour made our trip to the Icefields Parkway so much more interesting!! We loved learning the history of the area...hearing the fun stories...and all the tips that were given. Two places that we stopped at, Horse Shoe Lake and Stanley Falls...were the highlights of our trip, and we wouldn't have known about these places without the guide!! We'll be looking for these tours in the future!!.Version: 1.4

Icefields parkway, CanadaThis was the best $5 I ever spent. We drove in both directions, and it was spot on! Don't take the trip without it. When you got out of the car to hike or sightsee, it picked up,right where it left off, gives you a history lesson along the way, suggests places to stop,to eat, let's,you know how long a hike is, how difficult, etc. 10 thumbs up!.Version: 1.2

Worth the money! This was so worth the cost. I never buy apps, but I'm SO glad I bought this one and will buy more for other trips. The information and stories were so interesting. We listened to the app on the way back, too. I'm so glad we did. Some of the stories were the same, but the way back had lots of new stories..Version: 2.0.4

Icefields HighwayWhat a great trip. It was so nice to know the details of stops along the way! Like how far a walk and if the stop is picture worthy! Sure made the trip relaxing without any FMO (Fear of Missing Out!). Cheers Shelley.Version: 3.0.1

Perfect commentaryVery informative! It made the trip !!.Version: 3.0.1

A must do. One of the best guides I’ve had. 10/10A perfect app..Version: 3.0.1

Jasper to Lake LouiseGreat way to learn more about what you see from your car. Narrator only talks when there is something interesting to say. Makes great suggestions of where to stop to look at something. Really glad we found this app. It made the trip so meaningful!.Version: 3.0.1

So helpful! Highly recommendWe bought the Canadian Rockies app bundle for our trip from Calgary through Banff and Jasper. It was SO worth it! So many interesting facts and great places to stop and visit. I appreciated that the app let us know which stops were considered must do and which were not and how much time we’d likely spend at each one. I would highly recommend this app especially if you don’t feel like doing a lot of pre-planning!.Version: 2.1.5

Holy crap this is a great guide! It’s like riding on a guided tour bus! He knows everything you’re passing, has stories about history, geology, sights, attractions, viewpoints...and stories about all of them. I wish one of these were available for every trip and route I take. I’d never have to say “oh, I wish I’d known about that” after my trip was over..Version: 2.1.5

Banff, Ice fields and Lake LouiseFantastic app and so precise. We passed a fork in the road with a tree and the narrator told a story as we passed it. He also uses humour with his stories and facts. Well worth the minimal cost..Version: 2.1.5

IcefieldsExcellent app! The kids were really into it too, following the stories of the early explorers. And it played perfectly at all the right spots..Version: 2.1.1

ExcellentLove the Gypsy Guide apps!.Version: 2.1.1

Icefields parkwayGreat app!!!.Version: 2.0.6

Awesome appGreat app. Used it for Yoho park and it is totally worth it. We would have skipped Yoho altogether and go straight to the icefields. With the suggestions of the narrator, we went and don't regret a bit of it. It was fantastic. Gave us informations that a tour guide would have provided us with and brought our attention to things we would have missed. Awesome..Version: 1.4

Awesome App!We used this app while driving through the park from Jasper to Lake Louise . It was so informational . We really enjoyed it. It was not only educational giving explanation and history of the area as your driving but it gave you the heads up of what was coming up the road. What things you really don't want to miss and what things were interesting but not a huge deal if you did miss . Also gave description of how far and hard of a hike a trail was ect. And the narrator was entertaining too! Another great thing is that you can download this on your phone and you don't need cel service for it to work. Which is a good thing because there is no service all through the park . Worth every penny ! Please make more of these apps for traveling ..Version: 1.4

ExcellentOne of the best Apps I have ever purchased. My family and myself drove from Calgary through the Rocky Mountains up to Jasper. It was as if we had a personal tour guide with us on our trip. Even when the tour guide told us to "keep an eye out for mountain goats", they appeared right where the guide said they would be as if on cue. We definitely will buy more of these guides when we go on other vacations. Well done!.Version: 1.4

Incontournable !Génial ! Les activités proposées sont époustouflantes je ne regrette pas mon achat !.Version: 1.4

Personal tour guideThe app worked great, like having your own personal guide. It came on automatically (used Ipad with cellular) and switched easily from our music playlist to the commentary when we came to one of the tour points. We only had to reboot the app once after a stop at a rest area and it quickly picked up where we left off. The commentary was informative and entertaining. Well worth the purchase..Version: 1.4

GreatGood guide no problems.Version: 1.2

Great app. Like more pleaseThis app is great. It made for a very nice drive from Jasper to Lake Louise. It would be nice to see more tours of areas in the Rockies. There is a lot to see and do. Make more of them!.Version: 1.2

Rocky Mountain TravellerGreat app to have!.Version: 1.2

Same info, not as accurate as should have beenI really enjoy using gypsy guide (I have rented them before the app was available). I was disappointed that the ice fields parkway tour and Banff, lake Louise, yoho tour had the same information on them. I would have liked to have heard some new facts. Also the woman speaking on the tour at times talks like she is talking to a child. A more "grown up" tone of voice would have been appreciated. Some pull-outs and landmarks were on the opposite side of the road than what the tour said, making us miss some as we were looking for a pullout on the left and drove past the one on the right, not finding one on the left up ahead..Version: 1.2

Great value!Very informative! Made a spectacular drive even more enjoyable. So good, we listened to the guide driving north and then for a second time on the drive south. Well worth the price..Version: 1.2
