Mononoke is an unconventional synthesizer, designed to compose evolving soundscapes and musical textures.

Feedback routing
What sets Mononoke apart from other synths is that its voices (4 in each section) can be routed back into each other in multiple ways, creating all sorts of overtones and pulsating resonant frequencies. Sometimes harmonic, sometimes weirdly atonal. Sometimes clear and delicate as icicles, sometimes harsh as metallic blades, sometimes soft as fresh snow. This interaction between voices helps fuse all layers together into a coherent musical landscape.

A tale of two engines
The synthesizer engines (each of the two sections has its own independent engine) have relatively simple controls, which influence a complex system of many invisible, interconnected LFOs. But this is not your bread-and-butter general purpose synthesizer: think of Mononoke as one huge FM synthesizer where each voice is an independently playable operator. Together all operators contribute to a single soundscape.

Expressive pads
Complex soundscapes can be created live, using the 8 performance pads which let you modulate each voice independently in several dimensions. Your interactions with the pads will also be sent out as MPE/MIDI (when loaded as an AU plugin in a compatible host) so you can record and tweak your session. The onscreen pads can be latched individually so some voices can be used as drones, while others as can be added and removed as extra sonic layers. The pads are fully integrated in the Audio Unit plugin.

Connectivity
Mononoke is designed as an AUv3 plugin, with advanced Audio Unit features such as MPE input and output (!), a fully exposed array of AU parameters for automation and all the connectivity and scalability you can expect from modern plugins.

The standalone mode is basic (just meant for jamming and creating presets) and does not offer any connectivity, so if you want to use Mononoke in conjunction with other apps and effects you'll need to load it into a host, such as Garageband, Audiobus, AUM or Cubasis.

Summary:
- Audio Unit (AUv3) plugin
- 8 voice polyphony, 2 independent engines with 4 voices each
- Compatible with MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) and MIDI
- MIDI Input and Output (only available when used as an Audio Unit plugin)
- Limited standalone mode for jamming (full screen, no connectivity)
- 8 independently tunable performance pads for expressive interaction
- Universal, fully scalable to any screen size, supports fullscreen mode in AU hosts
- Freely tunable voices, or quantized to semitones (with overall finetuning)
- iOS10 (MIDI/MPE output from the plugin requires iOS11) or higher

Also contains Mononoke Pads: an extra AUv3 MIDI controller plugin for playing MPE compatible synths using Mononoke's pads. Note: this is a separate plugin which will be installed in your MIDI Plugin collection. Mononoke Pads requires iOS 11.

Mononoke App Comments & Reviews

Mononoke Positive Reviews

One of a kindAnother great app from one of the most consistent devs out there! It might not give you a “phat bass” sound, but there are hundreds of other apps that give you that. This is an app meant for generation of a specific kind of sound - one that isn’t easy to achieve with typical all-purpose synths. Mononoke exemplifies what I love about the iOS audio app ecosystem, which is the existence of niche apps, especially ones that make the most of the touch surface. It’s very expressive and something that you get better at playing as you spend more time with it. Something like this would probably be very expensive to develop as, say, a Eurorack module. I look at iOS devices as modular recording environments - each app its own module, everything tied together with Audiobus and/or AUM. I expect this app to get a lot of use..Version: 1.0.2

Excellent! But requires an open mind!Bram Bos has done it again. He always manages to come up with something different that richly expands horizons for those that are open to new ideas. Mononoke is no exception except in that it requires a much more open mind. This isn’t a traditional note-by-note synth where you get one patch going and play it up and down the keyboard. If that’s all your looking for you may be disappointed. It’s a feedback machine meant for producing excessive sounds by the way each “note” interacts with the others. Until I “got” the concept and was able to put my traditional mindset aside I really wondered what this was good for. But then it clicked and a whole new avenue of sound possibilities opened up. Now it’s one of my favorite instruments on iOS. Love it! Excellent work!!.Version: 1.0.2

Wonderful drone synthAs I learn my way around Mononoke, it’s become one of my favorite instruments. Its drones are so expressive, going from pure tones to howling nightmares as the wavefolder and feedback kick in. The multiple LFOs keep the sound in motion. And the pads let you change chords or add some melody during a performance. I’ve found Mononoke to be a perfect accompaniment to ambient guitar. It sets the key and mode for me to solo over, and it can match the sweetness or harshness of the guitar’s tone. It’s really been putting my creativity in high gear! I should note that I own a Lyra-8, the Russian synth that clearly inspired Mononoke. The Lyra-8 is a crazed beast I’m almost afraid to turn on. Bram Bos has caught its spirit but tamed it a bit, made it into something mere mortals can explore and live to tell the tale..Version: 1.2.1

Monster drone synth! When I first bought this app, I didn’t know what to make of it. Then, I watched videos on the Lyra-8 and everything fell into place. This app masterfully recreates and improves on the original design. Not only does it have the crazy feedback modulations on the oscillators, it has added LFO waves, wavefolding, and MPE sensitive buttons with individual holds and velocity. This synth is worth every penny, and once you delve into modulating the voices and put the presets aside, you will find that this app is every bit as visceral and organismic as the Lyra-8. In my opinion, it is even more so..Version: 1.2.1

Not Your Average SynthsizerActually, Mononoke is not a synthesizer. It is an electronic musical instrument to be sure. But it is not a synthesizer in the normal sense of the word. Lots of good things to say about, but most of them have been said in other reviews. The bottom line is it is a great deal of fun to play around with. The range of music you can do with Mononoke is quite limited. But think of it as a specialty instrument, not a general purpose synthesizer. One of the best features is its playability. Control Voltage structures are limited. The instrument is clearly intended to be played manually, complete with MPE data capabilities. The included ability to use the tunable playing pads as a separate MIDI control surface to play other instruments within an AU host is a great big plus. Shortcomings: ¡¡Mononoke NEEDS a dedicated volume knob!! The lack of a discrete master volume knob is very limiting. You have only one really useful way to control the volume of Mononoke, which is to run it through an AU mixer or host DAW. But that can be awkward, especially in live performance. A simple volume knob seems to me to be a necessary, obvious and very simple item on the upgrade list..Version: 1.2.1

Perfect Original Sounding SynthIf you’re looking for the ultimate make anything you want synth, this is not it. Don’t even bother. This new creation is it’s own special unique sound. Honestly, if it’s a sound I like, I love a good synth that only does one type or style of sound. Shockwave is sort of like this. I was messing with this for a few minutes and I was able to create a incredible texture all it’s own. Pro tip: move the dials slowly. If you are a sound scape or film score musician this makes the whole process so much easier. It’s instant film music!.Version: 1.0.2

This is an instrument... this is more of an instrument that intends to dial into a specific sound, more than it is an all around synth to create bass , drums, strings etc. much like a brass or string instrument is made to have a recognizable sound and character rather than sound like something that it is not, the performance and and how you play it is what sets it apart. this has quickly become one of my top go to instruments to get things started with a track. i mostly make ambient/ cinematic music and mononoke quickly sets the mood and gets the ball rolling. some shimmer reverb and delay to taste and you can begin to get lost a world of distorted drones, subtle soundscapes or plucky pleasant tones. let this synth have the control and do what it was created for, play it and modulate the parameters and effects and youll find yourself getting lost in its atmospheric cadence for hours!.Version: 1.0.2

Accessible yet deep drone synthHighly anticipated Mononoke and it doesn’t disappoint - really a very convenient and capable drone synth. Maybe comparable to Soma’s Lyra 8 synth, but in a highly portable form factor - which means I use it a lot more! I really like using this in the car, at full volume - the drone-pads are really expressive and rattle the windows in surprising ways. Also fun sequencing this with apps like Rozeta Particles and Fugue Machine, though you lose the expressive touch interface in this case..Version: 1.0.2

Oh please... UPDATEThe most recent update is so new it’s not even in the version history! I like dat! Every little tweak brings something new. Subtle is good in drone/ambient. I don’t understand what some people were expecting. If it’s a “one trick pony” what’s wrong with that? It’s a good one! The increased range on the pitch bend brings it into Theremin territory (another one trick pony?). With all of its other functions it’s a Theremin on steroids..Version: 1.2

Well worth what you payAs someone who uses Ripplemaker nearly everyday as a creative outlet, this is an exciting app; I believe that they will complement each other well. So far I’m blown away by the expression that’s capable through the pads - they’re a pleasure to play. Concerning another reviewer, I think this a dev that you shouldn’t ever regret supporting..Version: 1.0.1

A revelation...With so many synths sounding and functioning so similarly this is a breath of fresh air. It’s has a unique sound that will not fit some producers vibe, but for the more experimental types this is a must have. The only thing that I would add is a random button for the pads and a random button for the synth. Great work, worth every penny..Version: 1.1

Amazing Drone MachineHaving a ton of fun with this awesome drone machine! A heads up to people that expect this to auto generate and drive itself. It doesn’t. But in my personal opinion you can make a lot of wonderful ambient sounds with this app and have a blast tweaking the settings and controls along the way! Highly recommended!.Version: 1.0.2

A Subtle BeastOnly subtle until you understand that is not that at all. Once again, Bram kills the game with his vision and amazing creativity to create usable inst. Nothing new in way of this developers knack for making machines that not only are incredibly usable but stable and expressive. 10 Stars..Version: 1.2.1

Not only the best drone synthThis is absolutely my favorite synth for all intents and purposes. The UI is beautiful, yet keeping with the genius Bram Bos aesthetic. It’s just so playable, tweakable, and the eight programmable keys function like a Roli MIDI controller. Add a kick, add a lead. Drones for days; nothing else needed anymore now in this category (sorry Shoom). Drones for days. Thanks Bram Bos!!!.Version: 1.0.2

Incredibly Beautiful and Haunting!Mononoke isn’t really a traditional synth. It’s more a unique instrument you play via expressive pads and knobs. The sounds you can sculpt from this alien control panel are nothing short of ethereal and beautifully haunting. Highly recommended for discerning tastes!.Version: 1.0.2

Bad Midi ControllabilityNote to dev: learn to take some criticism for your work. its a great app, just needs some attention in some areas. settle down bram wow This app makes notes hang when you press more than one on any midi controller. Also there is no aftertouch which makes playing it with a keyboard even more useless. ty..Version: 1.2.2

LusciousThat all... just pure dreamy lusciousness!!! Mononoke has very few knobs to learn and it’s all very easy to understand and control. The pads are very addictive and so much fun to create interesting soundscapes. The stand alone MPE pads plugin is really cool too!!! The pads are really fun to play with!.Version: 1.1

Dev nails it againEverything from this dev is an instant purchase. Only spent 20 mins with the app so far and can tell it will be in every track I produce this year. 2020 is the year of the droneeeee bb..Version: 1.0

Another fantastic offering from Bram Bos!I can make this app do amazing things with the touch screen. The sonic control & evolving harmonic content is so cool. Stacks well with other apps, too!.Version: 1.0.2

SpectacularThis is one of my favorite iOS synths. Absolutely incredible sounds, and a great interface for expressions. Kudos to the devs. I adore Mononoke..Version: 1.2.2

I’ve been chasing that soundI finally took the Euro-Rack plunge after hearing a Radigue recording. The Arp 2500 modules are intriguing, but this stunning App takes great strides at the price of a sandwich. And plays with the new Logic Pro..Version: 1.2.2

Great way to chill!Makes it easy for ambient and you can go deep and deeper as your familiarity grows. Awesome value!!!.Version: 1.0.2

Great drone synthI have everything brombos does. this is a great drone synth. you have to leave your keyboard skills by the door, and treat this as something different. as a base for guitar playing on top, it is majestic. if you are into soundtracks or soundscapes, this is a great synth..Version: 1.0.2

Solid StuffNo complaints, does just what it promises. It’s a wonderful drone synth, great for ambience..Version: 1.0.2

2 of my favorite thingsA drone instrument and Brambos brilliance! Recommended..Version: 1.1

Tunings !Woah I over looked the tuning capabilities Excellent!.Version: 1.2.1

Super expressiveI appreciate this instrument and it’s very cool drone tone..Version: 1.0.2

Superb!Fantastic synth with a great UI! Might sell my Lyra-8 🤗.Version: 1.0.2

Great DroneThis app creates very useable drones and hypnotic sounds..Version: 1.1

Relaxing and versatileThis is an absolutely lovely app that draws you into drone making. Combine it with any of the developer’s mid generating apps and you’ll have all of the evolving ambient backing music you might ever need for YouTube videos. I haven’t yet tried mixing Mononoke with my collection of ethnic percussion apps, but that’s next on my todo list and I expect Mononoke to shine in that sort of use situation. Should make some great exercising music!.Version: 1.0.2

A1Mononoke is very intriguing. One of the most professional app developers out there. Never disappoints..Version: 1.1
