Super great... Except one thingI see this app hasn't been updated in quite a while which is fine, because I think it's actually pretty close to perfect. I bought the hardware version (stroboplus hdc) and have a couple stroboclips, but honestly I prefer the app... The display is quicker and more accurate than the stroboplus and it's more powerful than the clips. HOWEVER, at some point, it seems to have lost the ability to rotate upside down, which is something I used all the time! It made it easy to have a power cable coming out of my phone and still have the display in portrait mode, offering the most visibility of the strobe. It was super easy to have it plugged in and sitting on a music stand or desk. Also I feel the mic pointing upward helped the tuner hear the instrument much better. Please bring this feature back!!! Almost PerfectBottom line, this tuner is everything the pros say about it. Since I only play guitar as a hobby (I find it to be somewhat less confounding than golf), I can’t add anything to the “learnedness” of their comments. I’m sure I’m only scratching the top layer of the surface of the capabilities of this app too. I do know it’s more accurate than any other tuning gadget I’ve ever used, including an A tuning fork, a gizmo that looks like a weird harmonica (guitar pitch pipe), the Intellitouch clip-on, and built-ins for my guitars and amps. I need to read up on some of the other things it can do, because I’m not doing anything other than tuning my guitars with it. I was going to give it 4 stars instead of 5 because the screen often jumps around uncontrollably, especially when tuning the low E string. It don’t remember it happening when I first got the app (though it might have). That means I have to guess at where the sweet spot is a lot of the time. This happens with all of my guitars. It’s probably something I’m doing wrong because I’ve not read about anyone else having this problem. Since it’s probably due to “user incompetence”, I didn’t feel right taking away a star from a review that I’m probably not even qualified to write in the first place. Luthier’s ReviewI have been a luthier for 30 years and have been using my Stroboconn for that long. I wanted something equivalent and portable. I wrote my first spectrum analyzer (FFT) for hardware I made in 1984 running on a Mac+. I have a lot of expectations when it comes to this software. With in app purchases I had to spend $30 to replace the mechanical strobe which seems expensive for an app. It does, however, function very well. Make sure to calibrate it. I also spent an extra $10 for having the spectrum features replacing my Mac+. (Well worth it.) I would really like a power meter feature. Beyond tuning I often need to measure string to string balance in piezo pickups. The other feature I would love to have is a waterfall display of the spectrum. BEST TUNER, Just GET IT!Finnally a tuner that does not flash and jump around and leave you gussing. So easy to slow down the strobe. Makes so much sense to pluck a string and let it resonate while the string is tuned. Very sensitive using my iPad Pro. Having cents show is a great feedback that further increases confidence. I've found the string's tuning jumps a few cents after letting go of the tuner. Easy to get use to and anticipate so you end up with tuining within fractions of cents. Also, never made sense to bang away at the string to keep the volume loud enough for my old clip on, or in line tuners. Not using a pick was a piece of information that didn't jump out at me. Amazingly accurateI’ve used this to perform intonation adjustments on guitars, basses and Chapman Sticks directly connected to my phone or iPad. Because I route my sound through an audio interface and AUM on the iPad, this app is always available and my go-to tuner. I have a very good clip-on, but this app is always my first choice as it’s more accurate. Peterson has a dongle for direct connection, but you need another adapter between that dongle’s TRRS plug and either lightning or USB-C. It would be nice if Peterson also offered those as I’ve purchased several, and only found one that works on my iPhone. Really, really versatileWhat’s lovely about this tuner is that, unlike other apps that are obviously designed to tune a select few instruments, this one makes no assumptions about what you will tune with it. You want to tune a violin? It can do that. You want to tune a frame drum? It can do that too, and it’ll show you the drum’s harmonics as you go, so you don’t get a muddy, uneven tone. Really great toolI looked into and tried clip on tuners like the Snark. It worked well but I saw reviews that suggested some finishes were marred by the clip on over time. I saw the Peterson website and pondered on which tuner would work best for me with classical and steel string guitars. Then I saw the iStroboSoft tuner. Fascinated, I purchased and used the tuner with my iPhone and iPad. It has become my tuner of choice. I really like how it handles the job of fine tuning my guitars. I tried the sweeteners but finally I settled on the normal setting and use the “cents” setting. I find on most of my guitars the intonation on the third string is a bit finicky . If you just recognize this, you can kind of view the tuning bars and cent values to create your own “ visual” sweetener values. Bottom line- get it if you are in a quiet setting to use it. I actually think there is a clip for this that allows tuning in noisy environments? For me, I like playing at the end of day when all is peaceful and quiet. Simply the best.This tuner is incredible. It has helped me set the intonation on all 5 of my guitars with a degree of accuracy I could have never imagined. And for $10. It’s a no brained. Buy the app, you won’t regret it. I recommend the guitar tuning sweetener as well. Finally, if you want this tuner to preform like it’s in a lab spring for the adapter cable. You can plug your guitar directly into the phone (gotta use that stupid dongle) and it will take all the extraneous noise out of the act of tuning your guitar. The last software tuner you’ll ever need.Been using this app for about 5 years now and no app comes close to the tuning accuracy of this one. I’m a session musician (bass, guitar, piano) and an educator and I use this app almost daily. I also setup and repair bass guitars and use it to intonate strings which requires very precise tuning and the tuner handles it superbly. Peterson also sells an adaptor to plug in guitars to your phone/tablet; when I’m on stage I use the tuner out of my amp into my phone and it works perfectly. I use it to intonate my guitars.This app is the best tuner I’ve ever used! The strobe interface is what makes this tuner easier to use compared to my other ones. Yes, it is very accurate and sensitive just like how they claim. I was unsure about it because I didn’t have an interface, so I’m just using my phone’s onboard mic. Everything works with the built in mics, and you get the option on boosting the signal with some type of noise reduction option. Has the developer abandoned this great app?The main thing is that the app is very accurate and easy to read. I prefer it to most others for its simulation of a stroboscope...it seems to be more precise than the other app tuners I’ve tried However, the developers haven’t given it much love in a couple of years. It hasn’t been updated for newer iPhones, so visually it looks a bit shrunken. And I find that it freezes and crashes more often than any other iOS app I use. Needs new update!While I have thoroughly enjoyed using this app through the years for it’s accuracy and convenience—I believe there are currently a few bug fixes that need to be address to improve compatibility with current iOS. Does what it is supposed to doThe Peterson iStrobosoft software works as a strobe tuner for your iPhone. In my case, I put the sweetend tunings (because of licensing) on my old 5S, but I just use it for Music and Astronomy apps. I wish I could get some kind of deal to put them on both phones. As far as what is missing out of a sweetend tuning, how about some suggestions for 8 and 9 string guitars. Will update this review later to see how well it works with my Apogee Jam. THE GREATEST TUNERThe action of this is the most accurate and the least “erratic” of the tuners I’ve used... The result is that it takes 1/4 of the time getting each string in tune. Untested portions of appI tend to lose faith in a developer that doesn’t test all functionality before release. There is a flaw with the in app purchase for extended ranges. iTunes is working just fine for other apps and music and some of the in app purchases, but not for extended range. Nice tuner to have in my pocketWanted a tuner to set intonation. Did it by ear and was pretty close. But was still off a bit and wasn’t happy. (Guitars need a well tempered tuning.) The iStroboSoft with guitar sweetener showed me where I was off and needed to be, within 1cent. Also a great tool to have when trying out a new guitar. Tuner fits nicely in the pocket. Worth every pennyHummed and hawed about purchasing this app as it is expensive. However it proved invaluable when setting up an arch top guitar with a floating bridge. Getting the bridge placement would have taken a lot of trial and error unless you have years of experience with this type of bridge. I got it nailed in 15 min. It is a bit twitchy to use but keep in mind this is a high resolution tuner designed to get the finest intonation from a vibrating string. Definitely a professional luthiers product. Great precision!This tuner is extremely precise. It also has a couple of great features, like a dynamic noise filter that will take a sample of background noises and digitally filter them out, and a volume boost to get a better audio signal for softer sounds. Can't get a guitar in tuneThe tunings for the low e and d strings are not accurate at all on my new Rogers Iphone 3GS. I am using the most recent version of the software as well. I have compared the Istrobosoft to various other chromatic tuners and my Peterson Stroboflip (using the equal temperment settings). With the Istrobosoft the low e reads flat by 10 cents when it is in tune. The d string reads flat by 5 cents when it is in tune. UPDATE: This tuner now appears to be working correctly. Since downloading a different application, this one started working correctly. It appears to have been a problem with the initial installation. The Best!This tuner is super accurate and stable. I do have to dampen strings not being tuned sometimes. The customer service is superb! I had some troble with input error messages and the app not working properly when I first upgraded to iOS 7. I sent an email to Peterson's customer support and they responed within a couple of hours, let me know about an udate that was in the works and then even notified me when the update was available for download. Thrilled that it's back...Yes! It's a pretty good measure of how much I've come to depend on this app, that I was biting my nails for the few days that it was out of service after the OS 4.0 upgrade. I love the always-there convenience of having a Strobostomp built into in my iPhone. Other tuners pale in comparison, both in terms of accuracy and ease of use. I do a lot of instrument setups, and I've never found any non-Peterson pedal or rack tuner that is accurate enough for setting intonation. Accurate tuner!Very accurate tuner (I have the adapter cable, but even the iPhone's mic is very accurate within 1 cent)! I use this for tuning my pedal steel guitar mostly. I use a custom tuning chart, so the accurate +/- cents display feature is a must. Awesome Strobe TunerPeterson's has a great reputation for serious (professional) strobe tuners, I own two of them in my guitar rig. When I saw this app, I figured it was a gimmick, but I bought it anyway - folks, this is not a gimmick. Istrobosoft for iPhone 3G 3.0This is as accurate as my genuine Peterson VS-II tuner. I think the display on the iPhone is better, because it is clearer and brighter than the one in the VS-II. The display is somewhat jumpy, even for somebody who is used to a "real" Peterson tuner. The noise filter is pretty good, and the input gain control is nice to have. I have used the Peterson 1/4" adaptor with an electric guitar, and it works fine, as well. If Peterson will be doing updates on this, I would like to suggest that they put their "sweetened" tunings in, along with the Buzz Feiten tuning offsets. They may want to look at some sort of software dampening, switchable if possible, to keep the display a little more stable. I don't know if putting in the various temperaments would be possible, but they may want to consider the temperaments as add-ons at extra charge. Absolutely disappointedI trust the Petersen name as it has been in the tuner business for many years. But this product is expensive, hard to use, and deceptively advertises sweetened tunings. I decided to tune my Martin with it, just to see. This guitar has to be sweetened to sound good, I have been using my ears for that since I got the instrument 13 years ago. I was expecting an experience that would make it quicker and ‘on the fly’ for me to cleanly tune my guitar. Epic fail. It makes my guitar sound out of whack, the strobe on the far right never stops completely which gives me an insolvent answer whether it is in tune, sharp or flat. I have used the same free PanoTuner app since 2013 with excellent success. It is consistent, simple and even worth the paid version to support the developer. I am requesting a refund and hoping Apple will help me out of this. Back to the drawing board. Very dissatisfied. Petersen, please rewrite this antique of an iOS app, optimized for the latest iOS devices. Release it for free with the reworked sweetening as an in-app purchase. Please fix the audio!I’ve been using this app everyday for my practice routine and I have loved it. It’s extremely reliable and the tools are great... but why can’t I use a metronome app at the same time? I don’t know if it’s just me, but while playing audio from another app (like a metronome app), when I switch to iStroboSoft the audio becomes significantly quieter, to the point where I can’t hear it anymore even at max speaker volume. Also, when listening to a metronome with AirPods, they disconnect when switching back to this app! BAAAADDDUsing my iPad 2020s microphone for my acoustic yields zero results. Hardly functions at all. Barely rotates with noise cancelation on and off and boost on and off. Sweeteners are nice but don’t make it function any better. I only use strobe tuners, specifically a strobostomp that is fantastic. Idk why this app is this bad.
