Account didn’t exist anymoreI have been used Alipay account for long time. Today, it suddenly didn’t allow me to log in and said my account didn’t exist. I found that out when I needed to made a transaction. I have to log in on pc and make this transaction with fee. This bug hasn’t been solved at the end of today. Tourist to ChinaFrom my understanding, there were changes starting in July 2023 which is when I'm writing this to allow foreigners to use AliPay without a Chinese bank account and phone number. I just downloaded the app, added my credit card, validated ID with passport and all appears to work. Was a bit more automated and easier than WeChat. WeChat seems to have a manual ID review which rejected my initial attempt. I tried again but awaiting approval. I haven't paid for anything yet as I just set it up but assuming no issues, it was relatively easy. Only adjustment required is that some prompts were still in Chinese even in the international version but can fumble around or ask someone to help translate. UnusableI loaded this app as a suggested way to be able to pay in stores and restaurants in China that no longer accept US credit cards. It failed to allow any US cards to be added, saying “network error try again later.” Many of the selections and menu choices are in Chinese, even when English is selected as the language. Multiple times a White message box would open on the screen with two choices and the message all written in Chinese, forcing you to choose one of the buttons with no way to close the box without making a selection and no idea what you were choosing or potentially agreeing to or giving the app access to. Don’t install this if you can’t read Chinese. It’s worthless to a US traveler. I guess we’re back to the days of needing paper traveler’s checks in order to be able to get cash in Chinese currency. Operating Standards (especially for foreigners) dropping significantlyOperating standards for non-Chinese citizens, has basically made AliPay unusable unless you’re a person living full-time with a Resident Card on the Chinese Mainland, or are a Chinese, HK, or Macau citizen. Frozen at 1st useTraveling in China and the App froze my account for payments the first time I tried to use it. The app is very clunky and there are no instructions for use. If you make any kind of mistake trying to learn how to use the app to make a payment, the account gets frozen. To unfreeze you must add several forms of ID - including an account statement for the card on file (who travels with an account statement???) - and wait several hours for the account to unfreeze. The only way for a foreigner to request help through the app is using a chat feature. I never received a response after my account was frozen - verification is still pending several hours later. Scammy companyThis whole system/company feels like a SCAM for anyone NOT a citizen or permanent resident of Mainland China. They offer travelers a Travel Pass for people who are visiting China but then after depositing money into Travel Pass they lock your account and claim they need to verify your identity and can only do so with a Mainland China bank card. Well, guess what? You can’t get a Mainland Chinese bank card without being a citizen or permanent resident. So much for Travel Pass working for travelers who aren’t either. Customer service is an absolute joke. I have tried the US support number (it’s always voicemail, I left several A MONTH ago, not holding my breath on a response), the Chinese support number is “no longer in service”, I have sent several emails and I have even tried Facebook. I have never encountered a company of this supposed size that is so unprofessional bordering on fraudulent. In fact this whole system appears to be one giant scam because they claim Travel Pass is for foreigners to China but then require citizen status (only after they have taken your money). Here is what happened to me: They let me register for the app with my US debit card. Everything went through perfectly fine, the app even said I can use my US debit card to verify my identity. I then put 500RMB into my Travel Pass account. Then the next day, when I tried to launch the app, they claimed they needed to reverify my identity. I put in my US debit card again and got the message that they cannot accept that card as verification. So my card was good enough to let me register and then deduct money from, but once they’ve taken the money, my card is no longer good for verification? Sounds like a SCAM to me. Check Facebook, I’m not the only one that fell for this scam, there are a ton of people on there with their money taken and then unable to reverify. Bad: wish I can give no starI tried to set up an account to use Tour pass. A function that supposedly allows to use foreign credit card to link to alipay. My internet got disconnected half way through the process. Alipay then locked me out and asked to link a bank card in order to lift the restriction. Because I don’t have a local bank card, I called the customer service. It sent me an email asking me to upload my passport photo to verify my identity. But the link would not accept the photo in a format from the iPhone. If you use passport in order to citizen ID to open bank account, they required you provide your personal information (passport picture, your selfie with passport,…) through third-patry (mail) because their app doesnt accept passport. My Experience Using AlipayI’m a Canadian citizen currently living in China right now. While my WeChat pay works perfectly fine since I have a Chinese card, the same can’t be said about my Alipay account. For my Alipay account, I mainly use it for trade purposes/ large transactions. Often times for large transactions I tend to use my Visa card since I receive US dollars frequently and Visa card works for the most part. However, whenever I bind my Visa card with my Alipay account, I experience frequently issues. One of the biggest issues I experience is triggering the fraud detection system. They keep suspending my transactions, causing me great problems. They also require me to take photos of my passport, International card and selfie every time, which is a major hassle. Luckily their customer service is great, which is what keeps me from deleting my account. That’s about it however as the user experience is subpar at best.
