"It worked perfectly. The program was dead on…" - National Geographic

"One of the most powerful photography applications that I've seen, one that you'll be using for years and years." - AdoramaTV

The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) helps plan outdoor photography shoots in natural light, particularly landscape and urban scenes. It's a map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.

Whether you need at-a-glance information on today's sun, moon and Milky Way data for your current location, or need to plan a precise alignment of the full moon for a future shoot, TPE has the tools you need. The combination of augmented reality, line-of-sight analysis and visual search supports the most sophisticated photo planning needs.

Night mode features a 3D representation of the Milky Way, pole stars and major constellations directly over the map, so you can easily visualize exactly how to align your shot.

Research and save your own list of favorite photographic locations, using 7 different map types (including 2 offline maps) and save them in your locations list. Favorite locations are always displayed right on the map.

Advanced features including visual sun and moon search, automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon, ensuring that you have the best possible information for planning your shoot.

You can even determine when the sun or moon will rise from behind nearby hills and mountains.

The Photographer's Ephemeris App Comments & Reviews

The Photographer's Ephemeris Positive Reviews

TPE- essential tool for the informed photographerHaving TPE in the toolbox is really important to me so I make the most of my photography time. Surely happenstance photography ‘happens’ and I like to have my camera with me on a walk about with the dogs or just being out, intentional photography is deliberate and planned. You are still going to get surprises for content but hope to capture photos and videos of landscape and cityscape with the best opportunity for them to make a memorable impression. I am very please with Skyfire and when I find a quiet morning in the winter with little wind and a good chance of color I am headed to the lake to see if some long exposure photography can bring out some amazing photos with mirror like reflections of the landscape and sky. So many opportunities to use it for both day and night photography, it really is a tool for the informed photographer..Version: 4.12

For City/Landscape PhotographsIt is great to show you the elevation and “Flow” of the land. Also it has 4 types of maps showing this in Google & 2 using Apple maps. You can see what you are getting into, but you must remember the this is just a map form yesterday, new trails or changes are not shown. Also the view is of the elevation is great as long as they haven’t built anything or grasses/trees grown too much, which is not true for Charlotte,NC. All this being said, I related the program a 5 Star because it shows you so many points of view, the sun & moon flow in the sky at a specific time and a better location to at least start looking for a good spot to get the frame you want. This program is great for starting a plan from your house and then going out for the picture..Version: 4.2.2

Years of use and serviceI think I have been using this app for more than 5 years. I have gotten so many great moon rises both morning and night. It is so helpful for planning shoots. A portrait with the sun or moon in the distance is memorable. It has gotten a little busy over the years with all the features but well worth the extra strain on my aging eyes. The developer loves this app and they put their heart and sole into it trying to make it the best it can be. (App Request: Dummy mode: only display what can be used in the 3 hours.) Worth every penny and will last you several camera bodies. This is one of the first apps I recommend to my photo friends and install on my new apple devices. Enjoy..Version: 4.11.2

Nothing else like it!Extremely useful app, if you want to plan your photography for a trip or event. Pick your location-instantly you see sun and moon rise and set times. Tap on the date to pick a future date. Swipe a finger across the display at the bottom to see the direction of sun or moon overlaid on the map-satellite photo help plan the shot, and even tells you if terrain will obstruct your view of eg sunset. I have used it to choose location for a one time trip to the Mackinaw Bridge, as well as look to see where is the closest place to travel for the next solar eclipse. If you care about getting the most good locations for your photo trip, hands down this is the one to get!.Version: 4.1.2

Extremely useful.I’ve been using this app for about a year or more and it has proven very useful. I have several locations saved near home and a National Park where I go to to observe and photograph sun and moon rises and sets. Particularly, I try to photograph moon rises or sets within the Earth’s Shadow. This app provides the times and locations where this will happen. What it cannot do is control the weather, so ultimately it is still a challenge, but using this app ensures that you have all the information at hand to be in the right place at the right time..Version: 4.11.2

Daily checkerI use this app everyday to check conditions. The apps has a learning curve but once you start using it it becomes second nature. Excellent for planning photo trips and locations. I really like the night time/Milky Way mode and the optional Skyfire feature. Highly recommend this app if your into landscape photography. Only issues I’ve had is the clunky sign in process for Skyfire. Usually have to turn the WiFi off on my iPhone in order to sign in..Version: 4.1.3

Very hard to useI’ve had this app for years and it can be helpful but it’s also too hard to use most the time and I don’t think I’m going to renew my yearly subscription again My issue is that the main thing I like to use it for is favoriting a location and then having sky fire notify me when the conditions are good. Haven’t used the app on a while and I can no longer figure out to do something as simple as add a location as a favorite. Went online and tried to find help and can’t find anything. Why can’t you just favorite a location as you search for it? The app could be better if they just made it more intuitive.Version: 4.11.2

Cannot Save New Locations in the Mobile AppI have looked everywhere, but it appears that the only place to save a location that you personally designate is while you are in the Web Site. And, to add insult to injury, you cannot use the desktop version on a mobile device. This is very inconvenient considering I always have my mobile devices when traveling rather than my desktop computer. Additionally, the Skyfire add-on is rarely correct. I understand that weather changes, but when the accuracy is less than 50% that is an issue..Version: 4.11.2

Beautifully DoneI just wish the morons at microsoft and lately Apple could design and write software half this well. Very well thought out, beautifully conceived, written and extremely useful. These three apps (or any one of them for that matter) take your photography to an entirely new level. They work together perfectly. Very complimentary with PhotoPills (you definitely want these three apps even if you already have it). What a pleasure ....Version: 4.3

Excellent tool for photographers!Very useful for planning your photography when you want to create the perfect shot whether it is sunsets, moon rises, Milky Way, or trying to determine visibility between arbitrary points on a map. One feature that I find differentiates this from other similar apps is that it shows the height of the terrain between two different points while taking into account the ENTIRE path between the two points. Other apps simply would disregard the fact that a mountain may be in between you and the far end obstructing your line of sight. To get the most from the tool, watch the videos posted on Vimeo on usage. Once I watched those, I had a much better understanding of how to use the tool effectively. Great stuff!!.Version: 4.4

Essential tool for landscape photographyI find TPE not only very useful but also essential in some cases for successful landscape photography. Knowing ahead of time where and at what time sunrise and moonrise will occur and even being able to compensate for the effect of obstructions such as nearby hills or more distant mountains has allowed me to position myself at just the right spot at the right time. I highly recommend this tool for landscape photography..Version: 4.12

Still a beginner but learning a lot about this appThis app is unbelievably sophisticated. My main use is for sky fire. But I have used the tool that allows me to plan a shot by using street view and the type of camera and lens. I just got a new lens for night sky photography. I have zero knowledge of the night sky so this will hopefully help. I am planning on watching some of their help videos to get the full benefit of this app..Version: 4.8

Everything sun moon related in the palm of your handAnd it’s not just for photography. Curious where and when to look for sun/moonrise? On vacation and want to know where the sunset will be? This app does it all. Helps set up that one chance shot. And let’s you know when your next chance will be (or if it will even align). Well worth the price..Version: 4.11.2

5 for location information, 2 for functionalityAs much as I love this app, it drives me a bit bonkers. While you can find the directionality of the sun and milky way and all the cool stuff by placing the pin on the head of ant, the program does require a learning curve. [1] It is not intuitive. [2] The desktop version is equally non-intuitive and does not provide a night option or one that is easily found. [3] You can not enter GPS coordinates easily. On the web version you have to write a URL instead of simply entering the coordinates into two designated boxes like at least a dozen other apps offering GPS functionality. Still, despite these annoyances, it does the trick and once you work through it ‘particulars’ and you couple this with, say, Photopills, it does a hell of a job..Version: 4.6.1

Don’t Leave Home Without It!I travel a fair bit and keep TPE in a special directory on the front page of my iPad. I never even think about shooting a sunrise without planning my shots using TPE. TPE tells me when and where I will get the best shot. I can see if I should change locations, recompose or try for another day. TPE is it for me. So appreciative of the updates as well. No negatives..Version: 4.1.3

Incredible AppI have been using TPE for years. I use it for photograph composition, but also for viewing times with my telescope, and even for simple sky object identification. There is a fairly simple learning curve, supported by great documentation and video tutorials. Powerful. Loaded with options. Accurate. Dependable lengthy track record..Version: 4.10

Photo planing toolsI have been using the web app for while and today I purchased the “Photo planing tools” package. After spending a little while, preparing for a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton, I am really glad. I do see what I have been missing, even though the web app is good. TPE, TPE 3D and TPT are inseparables and work seamlessly. Get or upgrade to the tools package if you already have the TPE..Version: 4.3

Great app but...It works very well for sun/moon alignment but don’t rely on this app for sky colors. It fails quite a lot. The days that the app was showing very intense colors on the map I went out to photograph and it ended up being very boring and no much colors and the days that shows no colors at all, like white, I look outside my window and the sky and clouds were totally pink and beautiful colors. Trust in your instincts and go out when you think there’s a chance to be nice. Don’t trust this app for that!.Version: 4.1.5

A must for astrophotographersAmazingly powerful app that is a must have for planning shots of the moon or any astrophotography! Thanks to this app that my instructor used, we were able to get fantastic shots of the Milky Way galaxy as it appears over local natural landmarks at night, which would just not be possible without incredible amounts of guesswork otherwise..Version: 4.2.1

Amazing Photography AppThere are so many features packed into this App that it’s amazing. Spend a little time learning how to tap the potential and you will be rewarded with information to get the best photos and video. Just started flying a drone and have found this very helpful..Version: 4.9.1

SkyfireThe Skyfire function can be very frustrating at times as it will not load. I will sign out and in over and over, zoom in and out with Skyfire not functioning. Please fix this issue as the trouble has been there since I subscribed over a year ago. This is one of my favorite features when it works..Version: 4.10

App is ok could be much better easilyWhy doesn’t the app automatically reset to today’s date? It asks you if you want to, but also includes a “don’t ask again” button. Which is ambiguous. Is it don’t ask again because it will always reset or don’t ask again and it won’t reset. I assure you more often than not people are interest in today and future dates. Not historical..Version: 4.9.1

Wonderful! While it took a bit to learn how to use it, I now use this for all of my planned photo shoots as a semi-pro landscape photographer. I even used it for a very important shoot where I wanted to position the sun behind a particular landmark, and it came out perfectly..Version: 4.10

Serves my purposeI’ve used TPE for several years and have found it nearly perfect for my needs. Granted I use it only at its simplest level, but it hasn’t failed me yet. I can arrive in plenty of time to get my landscape and architectural photos at sunrise or sunset. I use it both on trips and locally (in NW Oregon) with my phone and iPad..Version: 4.5.3

Excellent for planning public astronomy nightsI am a member of an astronomy club in California and we have several public Observing events. It is a real thrill for visitors when we can tell them that evening exactly when to start watching the exact place on the horizon where the moon will rise. No matter where we are!.Version: 4.6.1

TPE - YES! SkyFire - TerribleDoes TPE have any relationship with the terribly inept SkyFire App? We buy SkyFire through the TPE app. Either tell them to pull their head out of their butts and make the app work like it used to work, or boot them off your TPE partner list!!! I am tired of this after 4 years. I am now writing negative reviews everywhere I can. I have emailed, contacted, entered support tickets - and - not a single response! Drop The Bums.Version: 4.9.1

A wonderful surprise after many years! Eclipses too!I've been using TPE for many years now, to do mundane stuff like help people plan weddings so the photos would work. And yesterday I discovered it also predicts eclipses. Beautifully and precisely. Great stuff!.Version: 4.14.4

Works great for night photographyI don’t do night photography all the time but this app is mighty helpful whenever I’m thinking about it. It answers all the guessing that would potentially ruin a shot for so many reasons like light pollution and where the milky way is etc. keep it up!.Version: 4.2.1

Easy to use, great information on sunrise and sunsetEasy to use app for finding exact sunrise and sunset times, as well as other astronomical information. Well integrated with Google or Apple Maps. I’ve used it in Europe and North America..Version: 4.12

I'm always using TPEIf your a photographer it's almost a must have. You'll quickly get hooked and with the google maps integration. I find myself using TPE in place of the google maps app even when I'm not shooting. It's a great tool and well worth the cost..Version: 3.15

IndispensableAbsolutely indispensable app for photographers. Simply a must-have on your mobile phone. DON’T recommend paying extra for SkyFire as the overlay published at 2:15/3:15 PM usually isn’t pushed to your phone until an hour before sunset by which time you should already be where you’re going. Near worthless..Version: 4.9.1

There is nothing like itI have been using this tool on my iphone for a decade. Just realized it might exist for the ipad, and am downloading now so thought I’d write a quick review. I love this tool so much. Highly, highly recommend..Version: 4.11.2

Brilliantly well thought out.A deep, science based app that cannot help but make you a better landscape photographer. It’s astounding what this program will do if you invest the time to learn how to truly use it. Impressive. Lighting is not happen-chance with this..Version: 4.6.1

Amazing AppWith this app I have been able to plan for shots for a planned trip or for a date and time that I can get a shot based to the sun or moon position relative to a land mark. I’ve used it for city shots and nature shots. It’s a great tool..Version: 4.14.4

The whole suite is fabulous; so useful and such detailed info! And the desktop version (paywall), has so much more info! Useful for artists, interior designers planning around light, landscape garden designers, etc..Version: 4.11.2

Promising, but flawedReally great overall execution and features. With an nearly-unusable UI. There are lots of really weird choices that don’t make sense, but the main problem is: You can’t zoom out enough to pan around and find a location. Search doesn’t work well. This means if aren’t standing AT your location, or at least close, you may not be able to use the app. It’ll tell you it’s at “flight ceiling.” Come on, it’s a map. In general it’s a useful bit immensely frustrating app that will take 4x the amount of time it should..Version: 4.11.2

Excellent Application could use some additional features.Very useful app, easy to use maps and the ability to predict orbital routes is super. I would really love to see a tidal feature added to the application, for us closer to water to know when the tide is in or out and its time. Please add..Version: 4.2.2

City skylineWow, this app was on point during my New Year’s Eve weather check. It predicted a radiant sunrise over the Pacific Northwest at one of my favorite locations. It did not fail and I got the most beautiful light before and during sunrise. By the way, I got the shot..Version: 4.4.1

Professional Outdoor PhotographerAn essential tool for serious & curious outdoor photographers. I’m not sure how I managed all those years without it! Its features are deep & robust. Expect a steep learning curve if you want to take advantage of its most useful features. In my book the time you spend will yield huge dividend!!!.Version: 4.8.1

Great Update!Thank you for another great update to PE. The new interface is elegant and awesome. This program is great for photographers planning a shot related to the sun or moon. It is also great for astronomy-related information. Highly recommended!.Version: 4.11.2

If your a Critical 5 shooter get it.Personally I don't believe in the golden hour. I believe in the critical five minutes. It's in those five minutes you have to be ready. And with The Photographers Ephemeris you have plenty of time to prepare..Version: 3.15

So Many Uses! There are obviously many ways to use this for photography, but there’s so much more! Where should you buy seats to the game/concert so you’re not staring into the sun? Depends on the time of day..Version: 4.3

Very helpful SupportI had a problem getting Skyfire to work in TPE. Stephen was very helpful. It didn’t take long and we had the issue fixed. Response time was very quick. TPE is pretty awesome. I hope to get a lot of use from it for planning in depth photography locations..Version: 4.6.1

Incredibly useful!Don't you dare photograph New Mexico without it!! Four stars because a few parts are awkward on the app, and it would be incredible to have it use the actual horizon in our mountains. Must have, improvements continue. Can't beat!.Version: 3.15

Must Have AppEvery photographer should use this in any natural light. It’s easy to use and offers a ton of options to get just what you want..Version: 4.11.2

Best app for Photographers bar none!If you photograph at all this is thee most needed utility next to a tripod. No, that’s not an exaggeration at all! Take the time to watch the tutorial videos and you’ll understand immediately when you plan your shot within the app. If I had to spend a couple of hundred to buy this app (lifetime fee of course) I wouldn’t find an issue doing so. Defined in three words to anyone thinking about it. YOU NEED THIS!.Version: 4.9.1

Pretty handyThis app helps a bunch in planning placement of sun and moon sets/rises once the subject scout hunt results in success. It’s pretty deep in its feature set too. Those I’ve tapped prove useful and fun. Recommend highly..Version: 4.1.5

Poor tutorialsI have not been able to find good tutorials on the use of these programs, unlike with a popular competing product. I want to like these programs, but so far they haven’t replaced the other product..Version: 4.11.2

Fantastic resourceIf you are a photographer this app is essential to your progressional toolbox. 20 years ago I did this with info from NASA and a compass. Now, bada- bing, got several shoots presently scheduled that will be money shots IF the clouds cooperate..Version: 4.6.1

Some Love, Some FrustrationI love TPE, the 3-D model I have not been so quick to adapt but that could be personal preference. My largest frustration to date is with the SkyFire add-on. I paid for the subscription and have my favorite spots setup. TPE keeps logging me out of the app and therefore I'm missing notifications! Very frustrated....Version: 4.5.1

TPE RocksThis is a fine and reliable app. It useful in video, photography and astronomy use. Thanks for writing this program..Version: 4.12

Skyfire is brokenFixed after a glitch and great again..Version: 4.9.1

AwesomeIt s a while I have been using this app and I should admit that it s very functional and user-friendly!.Version: 4.7

Beautiful ApplicationTPE is, for me, an absolute essential in planning and executing almost any outdoor photography assignment. Superb!.Version: 4.6.1

Best photo appsSimply a great apps, everything you need for outdoor pic. Where or when the sun and the MOON will be up in the sky! Everywhere you go!!.Version: 3.4.1

InvaluableI'm an architectural photographer and use TPE for planning literally every shoot. Great interface..Version: 3.2

Much easier to useThe previous version was a bit clumsy to work with. Some functions just didn't seem to be available. I wouldn't say it is a joy just yet but I find it very useful for my photographic purposes..Version: 3.1.4

SuperThanks great apps working everywhere Love it! R.Version: 3.1.4

Photographer appsIt's the best apps each photographer need to have. The developer added great functionality. Very recommended..Version: 3.1.3

GreatFantastic really useful tool for photographers but hate the update, the old interface was much more intuitive. See no benefit, only disadvantages to this update. A shame, a useful tool.Version: 3.1.2

Marcel PainchaudGreat app, especially when traveling to a new location for photography at dawn or dusk..Version: 3.1.2

Great app difficult to useUser interface is not intuitive, access to features is not obvious. Finding and storing locations other than where you are standing is hidden, several buttons are so dark you cannot determine what they indicate.Version: 3.1.2

Elegant user interfaceA feat in user interface design. Delivers extremely technical information in a very elegant UI. Bravo!.Version: 3.0.1

Excellent!An essential photographer tool for sun/moon set/rise shots..Version: 3.0

New Version - as good, if not better!!It took me a few minutes to orient myself to the new version, but now that I'm "there" I like it even more! It seems like it has better use of limited screen real estate. It also seems to take fewer clicks to do what I want with new version - great!.Version: 3.0

Great appExcellent app for any occasion.....especially when travelling. I use it all the time..Version: 2.5.2

Simply the best scouting tool for photographersI have been using TPE for a few years and it is a must have app. Great for scouting out locations. The ability to add and save locations makes going back to favourite spots and being there for just the right light weather permitting. Only wish would be to sync and save locations on multiple devices..Version: 2.5.2

Excellent!TPE is opening up new possibilities for me to plan dramatic photos. It takes some effort to learn how to make use of the app, but then the rewards are obvious. A big time saver, too, preventing wasted outings..Version: 2.5.2

Great app for what I needAs a realtor's assistant in cottage country, my boss and hence me, is always being asked "where does the sun set/rise", "is there sun on this deck in Jan, Aug, Nov?", etc. - this app is great for this but I do find the learning curve steep for all the other features available. Still a great app and worth the money. Is it available on other platforms?.Version: 2.5.2

In theory it's great!But, it's complicated. It doesn't easily recognize when you're in a new location..Version: 2.5.2

Very Useful ToolGreat tool for landscape photographers. I use it all the time when scouting for locations. You won't be disappointed..Version: 2.5.1

The Photographer's EphemerisExcellent tool for landscape photographers. I use this app every time I'm taking an outdoor photo..Version: 2.5.1

Wonderful!An essential tool for landscape photography..Version: 2.5.1

Simple and accurateBeing a software developer myself, there are only two things I look for in an application: the ability to do the job it was purchased for and ease of use. This application seems accurate and contains a wealth of information while keeping all functionality a gesture away. Very well done!.Version: 2.5.1

Buy it!Excellent app. Never a problem (unlike some other apps)..Version: 2.1.3

A must for outdoor photographyVery useful app with lots of functions. Makes planning easier and very easy to use.Version: 2.1.3

Amazing, easy to learn, time and money-saving tool! This lets me plan my shots more easily, and reduces wasted travel time, and helps me make the most of my vacation time. I have the iPad version and the free Windows desktop version and they are both good. Highly recommended. I just use the basic fetaures and I use them for planning outdoor people portraits as well as landscapes. There are some advanced features for more sophisticated users and I'm sure they are even more useful for ultra-skillful landscape photographers. I also bought Bruce Percy's ebook, Understanding Light With The Photographers Ephemeris, and it is a worthwhile book to own..Version: 2.1.3

A must have for the traveling photographerExcellent tool for becoming more efficient and effective while planning and shooting. Helps make the most of your travel time and money..Version: 2.1.3

A must have for all photographers !!!This app is simply the best one in it's category! I was a little bit hesitant to buy because of the price but let me tell you that you will not regret it. It is very well done and very very accurate. Alain Landry.Version: 2.0.6

Love itVery helpful and precise .. Great job.Version: 2.0.6

Very useful tool!Love it..Version: 2.0.2

The App Outdoor Photographers Have Been Waiting For!Anyone who does serious amateur or pro shooting will LOVE this app. At it's most basic it tells you when and where the sun and moon will rise and set for any location you can pinpoint on it's (Google based?) map. Using a range of tools you can then see where the sun will be anytime of day, when it will appear or disappear in relation to local hills or mountains, what is being illuminated by the sun. It's all overlaid on the map or satellite view. You can plan your entire day's shooting and know that you have the best chance of getting the image you want.... As long as the weather cooperates. Because the desktop version has the most functions they should make locations share from the desktop to the iPad and iPhone versions ASAP. The desktop version is free and combined with how to videos on the company website you can figure out using the more complicated features. The main time and direction information is super easy to access but they should give a bit better instruction on features that use elevation data In had basic features working from startup and an hour on the website and playing with the app I seem to have most of it working. I've already bookmarked some locations I will now try to hit for sunrise pictures. I'll also use the sunrise sunset data for planning video shoots. Being able to tell how many hours of daylight you will have on a given date in a distant location be very useful for planning shoots. Try the free download version on your Mac or pc. You won't believe how useful this is. Will be full stars when they make locations share between versions..Version: 2.0.5
