Solid app, worked well

Tried several Camino apps, many had multiple charges for each stage of route or each feature. We ended up using just the apps from Wise Pilgrim, functional and straightforward, even if they didn't have all bells and whistles you might imagine. Had all info we needed for the two routes we were on (Camino Aragones and Camino Frances). The lodging info was generally accurate, including phone numbers. The map with the active blue dot locator was invaluable, especially on the Aragones, which is less marked on the ground. One note is that as of July 2016 much of the route marked on the ground between Villamayor de Monjardin and Los Arcos is somewhat different- closer to the highway than the route marked in the app. Eventually they join together again and it's pretty easy to sort out what is going on with the blue dot locator and the map in the app.

Exactly what I needed!

I walked part of the Camino in June 2018 and found this app incredibly helpful overall! Unlike many other pilgrims, I did not have to stop and unpack a bulky guidebook every time I wanted to check distances or find the closest bar. All I had to do was pull out my phone and voila! Overall, I found the descriptions of albergues/towns and the route of the camino itself very accurate. Some of the prices of the albergues were slightly different but otherwise everything was great and I did not have any surprises. I also found the elevation profile very helpful for quickly visualizing distance between pueblos and the amenities offered. The online map was also very useful. For some reason, my phone tracks my GPS location accurately even on airplane mode without wifi so I was always able to know exactly where I was on the map. The map itself was very accurate. The only small annoying thing was that every time you open it, it resets to the standard starting place. Overall, I would recommend this app to anyone looking to get accurate maps and information about albergues and pueblos along the way. I found it to be a very good, and often more up-to-date alternative to carrying around a heavy guidebook. 10/10 :)

A must for the Camino Frances

This app was the best $5 I’ve ever spent. It has a useful list of albergues and hotels for every city, pueblo and village on the Camino - with reviews to help you decide. Be sure to use the WhatsApp helper feature - you tell it how many people and what date, and it creates a WhatsApp message in Spanish to request a reservation. I use this feature frequently. But the best feature is the map. It shows your location overlayed on a map of the trail. Not sure if you’re on track? Check the app. It will either reassure you or help you correct your course. I have consulted it frequently on the trail and have never gotten lost. Don’t listen to the old, negative reviews. The app is stable, doesn’t crash, and helps you navigate better than any guidebook.

Super-useful walking aid

Most useful for me were the offline map and the user albergue reviews. The first helped me numerous times to keep my bearings even when I couldn’t count on a cellular connection. The camino is well-marked but even so there are plenty of points when I got a little turned around, and this offline map helped me get back on track. The second was invaluable for choosing where to stay at night. I didn’t always choose only based on this guide but I often benefited from warnings of a bedbug issue or else just glowing comments about a given albergue. It lef me to many wonderful places and people. A third praiseworthy thing that occurs to me is the local historical and cultural info given on many towns. It gave me things to look out for or ways to appreciate where I was and what I was seeing. This context offered good reminders since it was often easy to forget about everything except the matter of walking, eating, and sleeping (of course that was good in its own way). I did use a print guide also and google from time to time so I cannot say what a Camino would be like using only this app guide. Regardless, I am very glad I had it (I still look at it from time to time to remember the experience).

Easy to use, helped me get back on track

Used this app for 500 miles. I used it daily. I was able to see when I deviated from the path a few times and the reviews for paths, lodging and cafes was very helpful. I could link to wahstsapp numbers for lodging to call ahead for a bed. Developer is very responsive to feedback. I’ll use the portugal version for my next camino.

So detailed and helpful

I completed my second Camino Frances this past summer, and this app was a game changer. Not only did it give me comfort along to way, but I learned so much more about each town. I really appreciated all it added to our walk. Will definitely be using the Norte version when I go back:)

GBartoloneVersion: 2.2.10
Helpful and well designed app (and guide)

I am returning to the Camino for second time and I found this guide to be very helpful and well designed on my first trip. My favorite features are the maps, elevation charts, and albergue listings - easy to use and have just the right amount of detail. Well done Wise Pilgrim.

Three Bits of Advise

When talking to people planning their Camino I give them three bits of practical advise: 1. You don’t need boot—use trail running shoes. 2. Learn some Spanish. 3 Get the Wise Pilgrim app.

My only Guidebook

In an effort to lighten my backpack on the Camino de Santiago, I reluctantly left my guidebook at home and instead installed several iPhone apps, including the Wise Pilgrim Camino Frances app. I rarely used any other app and found this had virtually everything I needed. I used it to calculate how far I might walk, where I might stay, and what to see along the way. It did not have a ton of information, but I preferred to not over plan my pilgrimage. Several pilgrim friends would come to me to ask where to stay in particular villages. Overall, excellent value and I would definitely use it again, and keep the guidebook at home.

Indespensible Guide

Everyone else carried a guide book but with this iOS app, no books were necessary and I was grateful to have updated content during my Camino. The "Comments" were indispensable and helped my better ascertain which albergues would be a good fit. Also it was a benefit to read other people's reviews of their stay and of their journey. I am continually recommending this guide to other pilgrims. Thanks for creating such a professional product!

Had everything needed and more!

Had everything needed and more. It even included old and closed albergues, which saved me a bit of unnecessary walking at the end of the day. I will carry it next year when I walk the second half.

I found this app very helpful. The reviews on the albergues were great and helped me pick places to stay. Elevations were helpful. Maps (because I was not online) did not help me but were helpful to others.

Worth the money!

So I used this app when walking the camino last year. It plots out all the main stretches on the map. All the albergues that you need on the route. The map is accurate. The app is basic, but it’s really all you need. Simple is better in book. Would recommend it to anyone. Hope you enjoy and buen camino.

Wise Pilgrim Camino Francés Negative Reviews and Ratings

Just okay.

Crashes upon open frequently, but just click it 3 or 4 times and it works, so maybe 2 stars would be more appropriate. Not optimized for iPhone X screen size. Used it for partial Camino from SJPDP to Fromista in 2017. Like the elevation profile. Albuergue guide a bit basic but complete, a narrative review might be nice or more user comments would be nice. Comments are recent only. Decent narrative for route but a bit difficult to access, you tap The Provinces, the you find your area. Took a bit to discover that. No offline map, so I downloaded competitor app thar has gps and oggline map. No customizable schedule/route.

30iVersion: 2.2.10
Disappointing, irregular functionality

This app’s functionality is highly disappointing. I’m on the Camino now, and more often than not (about 90% of the time), it does not open correctly. That is, the screen open the immediately closes. However, when I view all of the currently open apps, it shows the app as being open. About 25% of the time, I can open the app from there. But the other times I need to close the app fans start over/try again later. When it works, the information is useful.

AfyinzerVersion: 2.2.10
Not helpful

Currently on Frances. I cannot set daily starting points as the app always seems to think I am one place further than I actually am and everything “behind” me is erased. Hard to read names of places, lettering is so small. What is the point of “favorite” an albergue if it doesnt show as a fave on the map? So many ways this could be improved to be useful. OTOH, the CF is marked so well you dont really need an app.

Lg1953Version: 6.2.2
Not ready for prime time

A little bit more development would have made this a great app. It appears to have been rushed to market without a final proof. Lots of distance errors, the online map is worthless because the map symbols overlay the route making it impossible to use. Distance to any destination apparently is as the crow flies, not matching the apps text descriptions. It is necessary to drag along a competitive guide to double check whatever this guide tells you. That makes this guide redundant in the overall scheme.

Miguel CamineroVersion: 2.2.14
Crashes too much to be relied upon

The app includes decent information from what I've been able to gauge. But the app crashes more than 50% of the time. There are times when you cannot get it to work when you need to make a decision about the way to go. You just can't count on it...

TurtletaleVersion: 2.2.10
Hard to navigate

I am having a very difficult time establishing my starting point in Leon, saving it, and moving on the next next place and saving it. I’ve had to start over multiple times, it isn’t at all easy to set my itinerary.

Disappointing

Not intuitive at all. I also bought it for the MacBook, which it doesn’t even appear was happy to take my money. I asked AI and they said just go to Google maps and don’t screw around.

No new update?

Well it’s a good thing I follow groups related to camino so I can get more current updated information. Relying on an app that isn’t updated to plan and navigate isn’t all that wise, IMO.

I bought this app because I don’t want to carry a guidebook on my Camino. However, every time I try to open the app, it immediately quits working.

A good start but not well organized

I bought this app after my Camino group split up in Burgos and I was left guide less. With some heavy pre-planning at the albergue I can map out tomorrow's course, but it requires taking snapshots of the map and checking other sources for distances. A few suggestions: 1) I'm in Leon. This app tells me I am only 245 kilometers from Santiago, but every other guide, including my Camino Passport, puts me at about 300. The difference is worth TWO DAYS of walking. distance from current location is useless if it's not Camino distance, but as the crow flies. 2) The stages should be broken up into 25-30 kilometer sections. 30 kilometers is a pretty aggressive day for the average pilgrim, but would still be functional for planning. Most guides follow a 20-24k plan. It would be helpful if this guide had similar stages. Also, the total stage distance should be shown on the stages page. 3) A distance calculator would be very helpful. It would help with planning if I could enter the names of cities and receive a total distance. Or if I could enter a start point and a kilometer total and receive an end point, or the nearest city with an albergue. 4) The map is the best feature on this app! Please make it accessible offline. You're off to a great start, please keep up the good work!

Jedidiah1225Version: 2.0.5
Some additional features would make this more useful

I'm on the road right now trying to use this app - without a data plan. I am relying on wifi at albergues and bars for my iphone and ipad. First of all, this app has a lot of info. That's great! But it's hard to use because there is just so much and at times it's confusing. I would like to suggest the following: Quick links - ability to bookmark albergues/stages Cacheable maps/Distance - so you can take a look a town or a stage easily. Ability to leave notes about a town/stage to give the heads up to pilgrims. Ability to download latests notes for a stage you are looking at so you can make the right choice for albergues (if you have a choice!!) Maps to point out route changes more clearly.

Hanabatake.comVersion: 2.0.5
Doesn't Update & Missing Key Info

Have gotten no response from Wise Pilgrim support, but did see another posting from another user with the same issues i have. As installed all the lodging information is absent. If you try to update that stage your iPhone just hangs. Also I see no directions nor do I see a useful map, only an elevation profile like the Astorga profile shown in the 3rd screen pic above. The artwork is beautiful and I'm hoping this app could be my walking guide. I've tried at least 5 or 6 times over about 3 weeks, plus left messages with the support page with no response. Perhaps the developer has had a major crisis. It's a great concept. Here's hoping the issues get resolved!
