Lumo AI by Proton App Comments & Reviews
Lumo AI by Proton Positive Reviews
Good for privacy, not always the best for answersLumo is a solid 4/5. I’ve asked questions about numerous topics and it is pretty good, but not the best. I prefer Lumo for the privacy aspect, but you need to make sure that web search is on and specifically ask it to give answers with up-to-date information through web search. One chat was clearly based on outdated information, as it was giving answers that I knew were incorrect. I asked why and I pointed out I have web search on. It then told me that it decides when the chat begins whether it uses web search or not. (I’m not sure if this has been fixed or if it’s known to be an issue.) Make sure that you ask it if web search is enabled prior to any conversations. The latest training is from April 2024, so if you have questions about a person or situation that has changed since then, you will get wildly different answers with old and new information. One time it fact checked me over a person’s recent death, stating that the person was alive when they aren’t. Like with any AI, it’s a good tool, but ask clarifying questions and ask for updated information, especially if you have a question that is relevant to today. Any AI is only as good as the questions asked and its programming..Version: 1.2.5
5Nov25 Edit: Fixed / Broken after iOS 26 Update5 Nov 2025 Edit After the iOS 26.1 update and the last Lumo update, the below problem is resolved. Note: The GPT4.0 still gives fake data and fake references. But that's everywhere. Updated stars from 2 to 4. ----- Original: iPhone 13, upgraded to iOS 3-4 days ago. All apps in app store updated as of 09:00 (GMT -4). After asking a question, keyboard can be "dismissed" but the UI never readjusts, so Lumo and all its windows/panels take up just 1/3 of the phone, leaving a blank 2/3 "white space". The entire conversation has to occur in a 2" box with a 2-line reading window. I've tried logging out/in and reinstalling. "Help/Settings" also becomes totally unresponsive. Will edit stars and review when fixed. As for the LLM, it's workable on my regular Pro sub for the few questions as I am a heavy Proton user but not a heavy AI / LLM user. I do not find it worth an additional subscription and would simply use another product if locked out of Lumo on a paid Pro (non-AI sub) basis..Version: 1.2.3
Usability issues due to keyboard space staying upDuring my very first use of this app immediately upon installing, it became apparent that reading responses would be nigh impossible. Why? Because while the keyboard disappeared upon sending my request, the space it took failed to collapse, reducing the space available to display the response to a mere 6 lines of text. Additionally, a button overlayed the response text. Its purpose seems to be to scroll down to the end of the response. Unfortunately it made it impossible to reach the text displayed next to it, for the purpose of scrolling. So the only area that would respond to scrolling exists above that button-a mere three (3) lines of text. Imagine having to scroll through several paragraphs of a response when you can see only 6 lines at a time, and can use but 3 of them to scroll through the remainder. An utter usability disaster, this app does not lend itself to be used for anything serious, it its current state..Version: 1.2.4
Great app, but scrolling can improveI’m a huge fan of Lumo and its emphasis on privacy. Thank you for the dark mode; I’ve been looking forward to its rollout ever since I started testing out Lumo. Suggestions: scrolling in the app can use some tweaking. Sometimes, it seems that I can’t scroll in a chat, and I need to hit the hamburger icon at the top left or reopen the app to reset the ability to scroll. Lumo also often provides tables in responses to answers; scrolling from left to right in the table—especially the first table in an answer—can be problematic. I find that I have to highlight text, then drag the highlight to the right in order to see table columns that are out of view. Great job overall; keep up the good work..Version: 1.2.4
Totally worth itLet me preface by saying, I have never used any of the other AI's. None of them. And I didn't try this until the big update. And I've only probably used it 10 to 15 times, though many of those were extensive. And I did not use it for anything one might consider 'creative.' So in my expert opinion, it's totally worth it. I used it for some real estate analysis, and was able to get both great summaries and great detail, all backed up by links that had even more worthwhile information. it wasn't sycophantic, and acknowledged gray areas I would point out in some of their responses. getting that under a veil of privacy is something I'm so far very happy to pay for it..Version: 1.2
Nice but needs workI love Proton and I love cats, so I wanted to love this. Privacy is important, but so is readability. On my smartphone, it was difficult to read answers since they often are presented in a table that requires me to swipe sideways to read. Really wish the answers were presented primarily in paragraph form. Even in paragraph form, Lumo’s text seems to spill off the edges, at least via mobile browser, forcing me to scroll a bit sideways too. (I’m using a recent non-Pro iPhone.) Results come back slower compared to ChatGPT, but I found that they were good results and the privacy factor makes this worth it. I’m going to wait a bit until there’s a dark mode and (hopefully) the readability on mobile screens are optimized..Version: 1.1
Very Impressive! As somewhat of a power user of Proton’s app ecosystem, of course I was intrigued by the words PRIVATE and AI coexisting (finally!). What I did not expect: Lumo is outperforming ChatGPT and Gemini chat after chat. I’m not sure how this is possible without using user chats for training purposes, but really — coming from someone who has spent way too much time with the other chat bots — Lumo is proving (so far) to be able to handle complex projects in a way that just seems to beat out the others on clarity, recall, as well as continuity of thought and on-point suggestions. Congrats to the P-Team! 🙌.Version: 1.1.1
Looking forward!I take privacy seriously and am so sick of data collection. I don’t care if Lumo is on par with ChatGPT or other models, I care that it allows me to experience AI in a way that doesn’t require me to sacrifice privacy. And if I understand correctly, the more it is used, the better it will become. So I’m subscribing to encourage that growth. I very much appreciate the products offered by Proton, but even more so, that there’s a great group of ethical people out there who are willing to provide them at all..Version: 1.1
Good Enough GenAi Without the CreepynessIs it as good as Gemini or ChatGPT? No. But does it do 95% of what I’d want it to do? Absolutely. In some respects I like Lumo better because it’s not totally sycophantic and telling me that every question is a great question. Proton has a great reputation for privacy so I feel much more comfortable using this than the others out there, and end to end encryption on your chat history means you’ll never have to worry about your chat history ending up in Google search results or Facebook..Version: 1.0
Subpar but improvingI enjoy Proton products. Most of them are just as good if not better than their more mainstream counterparts. However Lumo is not one of those products. In a perfect universe Lumo is an AI that is fast, accurate, and most importantly private. In its current state Lumo is just not up to par. It’s slow (though it has gotten better since launch) and fails to properly lay out information in a manner that is consistently useful. However biggest flaw… no dark mode. I think with some real work from the team Lumo can become a genuinely useful product but until then it is a sad middle ground..Version: 1.1.1
Much Better Now!I’ve been starting to use it more and more, and have replaced ChatGPT with it for the most part. The search functionality seems to work great, it gives me long detailed responses (though, would be cool to customize that and a bit more) and it can easily answer a good variety of responses. I do with there was dark mode though, since I also use the app at night and I don’t particularly being blinded. Proton certainly will listen to their audience, and I’ve used the “send feedback” button on responses when something wasn’t particularly right. One thing I’m glad they are improving on (though, numbered lists are still a bit of an issue) is how Lumo has the layout (titles, body, tables…) more organized and readable. For sure the AI will get better and better. I might consider purchasing Lumo+.Version: 1.1
So Far, So Good. Nice Start!Lumo is my first intentional experience with artificial intelligence, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I treat it like an alternative to Google, and I love that I can dive into topics with assistance in parsing through dense papers, documents, data, etc. Organizing notes, summarizing conversations, scheduling tasks, creating study plans, finding and comparing repositories/tools, it's been great so far. I'm excited to have access to modern tech with an emphasis on ethical development. Looking forward to future progress!.Version: 1.0
Here for the privacy! Is Lumo the best AI tool? Not necessarily. Is the good enough for most prompts? So far, I’d say yes. Is it backed by the best tech company in privacy? Yes! And that’s the feature I’m paying for. We all have to prioritize the important features when we make a purchase. When I signed up for my Visionary account, I did so because I value privacy. Yeah, Google and Open AI have some better features, but those features are given at the expense of your privacy..Version: 1.1
Excellent! The app provides very detailed and helpful explanations that include charts, links to external websites, and business or tax information. It developed a full-blown plan to start a business including social media posts, marketing, expense tracking, and legal considerations. It got my vibe/gist for the business without excessive prompting, was extensive in explanation and considerations included without prompting, and accurate. Highly recommend this app, and I love the privacy that’s baked-in with Proton products..Version: 1.1
Glad this is here! Lots to be desired; hopeful for further developmentMy main uses for something like Lumo would be math and coding. Lumo seems to lack LaTeX or other rendering capabilities that would be incredibly helpful. Lumo seemed to hallucinate a lot about its own settings options and some other Proton products. I’m sure many kinks are getting worked out, and I’m pretty psyched this is here. I’d certainly rather use a privacy-focused AI assistant than one of the biggies. Looking forward to improvements, and hoping Proton will add text features that make math and coding easier..Version: 1.1.1
Great, but…I have turned on every accessibility feature I can find on my iPhone but none of them help with the microscopic font size in the Lumo app on my iPhone. I even asked Lumo if it would adjust the font size and it told me to use the accessibility features on my phone, which I did, to no help, or the browser zoom but I’m using the Lumo app. Please fix this and add this feature or setting! With my eyes, it renders this app useless to me on my iPhone without pulling out a literal magnifying glass, and using it on top of my 1.75 zoom readers!.Version: 1.1.1
Beta Feel—Lumo+ Should Be Free For Unlimited AccountsWhile it may have potential, at this point in time Lumo 'feels' like beta software. The upgraded version (Lumo Plus) is ridiculously overpriced. If the developers wish to attract a larger number of serious users (beta testers), Lumo Plus should be offered at no cost—or at a greatly reduced cost—to all Proton Unlimited customers. As it now stands, I have no interest in paying for another Proton product that is not quite ready for prime time….Version: 1.1
Not fully baked yetThe option to clear the history (like one of the screenshots claims) is not easy to find (you have to go to the menu and then choose the chat with the three dots). This could be made more intuitive and prominent. I also do not see a Ghost Mode to ensure that chat history is not saved. There is nothing in Settings->General. I hope this is fixed soon and that the app itself provides a short tour on these key privacy features..Version: 1.0
Intermittent freezing!!Hi. I love the idea of this app and your products. That said, as I’ve been giving this app a try over the last few days, I’ve noticed it will intermittently freeze while displaying results and I’m unable to scroll and read the full result. Nothing helps when this occurs beyond killing the app and trying all over again..Version: 1.2.4
No creepy tracking? No creepy tracking? Sign me up! The last thing anybody wants is more surveillance and this little guy makes it so much easier to do all that. It’s just annoying at this point now with all the people collecting and selling your data. So the moment I heard proton created a private AI I immediately downloaded..Version: 1.1
Well hello thereI’ll be honest, I didn’t see this one coming. I like Lumo as a service, but…you can tell it’s a pretty new product. The app lacks dark mode, the widget interface is pretty…broken, and you can kind of tell this is a smaller model than mainstream providers. Still, I am intrigued by where this project will go, and if there’s a company I trust with encrypting things like this, it’s probably Proton..Version: 1.0
Export full chat ?In the iOS version she insists there is an export full conversation behind the three dots… but all I can find is “save to favorites” or “delete” full convo. I’m on “unlimited” so I don’t think that has anything to do with it. I can’t seem to find any queries about this issue. Thanks for the app tho. Big fan..Version: 1.1
I’m sure it will get betterI wasn’t expecting Proton to release an AI assistant, but they did and it is the only one I feel comfortable using. However, in my first interactions with it I don’t see any reason to use it. I figured, if anything, it would be knowledgeable about Proton services and help with learning how to use them more effectively. It constantly gave me incorrect instructions regardless of how much I tried to guide it..Version: 1.0
No data tracking?!This will become very popular especially since OpenAi said they’re scanning users messages to report to local government. Please fix the glitchy stuffer of the UI. When clicking on the search bar and the keyboard pops up it looks like it’s lagging.Version: 1.1.1
Private but lackingI really wanted to love Lumo because I like Proton’s other site of apps. But unfortunately when I ask Lumo questions, he tends to give me outdated info or broken website links and was a bit defensive when asked questions about politics and the US economy. Was a bit strange because I would have expected a less emotional or dismissive response. Hope they keep working on him!.Version: 1.2.5
Does what it shouldI’m biased because I love everything that Proton has to offer, but I just switched to Lumo for my main AI assistant. It can search and reason just as well as other AI assistants I’ve used. It’s come a long way since it was first made public and I believe it deserves praise. Great job, Proton!.Version: 1.2
Great for European languagesI use AI to help me understand difficult passages in French and German books and this AI is in a whole other league than any other AI I've used in this respect. I've received entire lectures on a subtle aspect of grammar where other AIs would just hallucinate an easier answer. Very impressive..Version: 1.1.1
This version is great! This new version is great, very useful and generally on par with other options out there for what I use it for. The privacy aspect makes it my top choice by far. Lumo is my new go-to and would love for this to link up with Apple Intelligence in the future..Version: 1.1
I have been looking for something like this!Nice AI assistant! I wish you can be clearer about the daily limits, chat history limits. Also it would be great if we can rename each individual chat. That way, finding the right conversation would be quick and easy. Thank you.Version: 1.2
I want to love itLike all Proton products, I believe in the mission statement and admire Proton’s dedication to it. Like many Proton products, Lumo should have gotten more development time before being released. Lumo is a good kitty though. Feature requests: - Dark mode across the board, from the GUI to the app icon. - Better widget functionality (also with dark mode). Right now, the widget is just a big app icon..Version: 1.0
Pretty good…I also wish you could upload / share screenshots and photos directly and have Lumo analyze the written text like in other apps do. The privacy and anti data collection is still an amazing feature and i really appreciate that. Im sure as it improves I’ll be upping my rating..Version: 1.2
Table issueI love the idea behind the app, however when tables are generated I can’t see the entire table, I can see 2-3 columns top and I can’t horizontally scroll, which makes lumo unusable in my phone.Version: 1.2.4
Finally, private AI from Proton!Lumo helps out just as much as you could expect from any solid chat AI. No sneaky big brother stuff or data hoarding either! I recommend Lumo for more personal inquiries over the biiiig tech platforms.Version: 1.1.1
Limited but at least private by defaultI’m sure there is reasons for why this ai assistant can’t do everything like ChatGPT can due to encryption and privacy features present, but i am just happy a company is trying to bring privacy to the ai space. Honestly I wish they AT LEAST had dark mode! My eyes are burning!!!.Version: 1.0
Clean format & pretty good except…I just had a discussion with Lumo. It told me I that the 2024 election hasn’t taken place yet and I could not say who was the winner yet. Broke my heart. The upside is that at least Lumo is shielded from the nightmare of a pathologically sadistic madman..Version: 1.1.1
Wish it had true dark modeThe white gives me headaches. When I saw the app update saying it had dark mode I was happy only to be disappointed. Let me make the entire interface dark. My phone is set for dark all the time. Going from dark to bright white is painful..Version: 1.2
Privacy based AILoving the updates and added functionality. I’m really glad there’s a company out there that actually cares about Privacy and keeping data secure..Version: 1.1.1
Cannot turn on webCan’t turn on web for better results. Nowhere within the app does it have the function/ icon/button or whatever it takes to turn on web browser. Kitty not helping..Version: 1.1.1
Where’s dark mode? The latest update includes dark mode in the change log but I’m not seeing it anywhere..Version: 1.2
Links don’t workI haven’t actually used it much yet, so I don’t necessarily wanna give a star score but the links to the privacy policy and terms of service don’t work along with a bunch of other links..Version: 1.2
Free International Money Transfer 💸Enjoy high maximum transfers into more than 20 currencies while saving up to 90% over local banks! The cheap, fast way to send money abroad. Free transfer up to 500 USD!Version: 1.4.0
