Good for privacy, not always the best for answersLumo is a solid 4/5. I’ve asked questions about numerous topics and it is pretty good, but not the best. I prefer Lumo for the privacy aspect, but you need to make sure that web search is on and specifically ask it to give answers with up-to-date information through web search. One chat was clearly based on outdated information, as it was giving answers that I knew were incorrect. I asked why and I pointed out I have web search on. It then told me that it decides when the chat begins whether it uses web search or not. (I’m not sure if this has been fixed or if it’s known to be an issue.) Make sure that you ask it if web search is enabled prior to any conversations. The latest training is from April 2024, so if you have questions about a person or situation that has changed since then, you will get wildly different answers with old and new information. One time it fact checked me over a person’s recent death, stating that the person was alive when they aren’t. Like with any AI, it’s a good tool, but ask clarifying questions and ask for updated information, especially if you have a question that is relevant to today. A Good Start (UPDATE)UPDATE: Proton launched features as promised and directly addressed 2 of my 5 issues. Images are on the roadmap as well. Proton Doc files say they’re coming soon. That just leaves the hallucination problem, which is still prevalent. That being said, Lumo now fulfills most of my needs and, as promised in my original review, I have switched to Lumo Plus. Review changed to 4 stars. Will update again when images are added and/or when hallucinations are addressed. Thoroughly impressed with Proton’s work here! My issues with Lumo are exclusively feature parity. I use ChatGPT quite heavily, and am looking for an alternative option due to recent updates to it. I don’t expect an exact 1:1, but there are some things that, if included, would cause me to swap over to Lumo as my primary assistant: 1. Dark mode. Please. 2. The ability to attach Proton Docs. I already subscribe to Proton Unlimited and heavily use Proton Drive. This would make the ecosystem far more usable. 3. Image file types as supported file types for uploads. I frequently screenshot things and ask ChatGPT about it. I’d love to do that with Lumo. 4. Switches, toggles, customization. I’d love to be able to give Lumo custom instructions without having to upload a document for every chat with instructions written in it. 5. Hallucinations. Sometimes they’re charming, but they’re often not. Reduced hallucinations would be a big plus. With all that said, Lumo has started in an excellent place. Proton seems to be doing a great job with frequent enough updates and I’ll be watching this closely. And privacy focus on top of that? Chef’s kiss. Massive and potentially damaging issues!!It’s a nice chatbot/assistant but this can barely be considered AI at its current development stage. For instance, Lumo couldn’t do the basic task of being asked to find some furniture with specific features, sending me tables full of not only broken links (one table had only 2 working links) some even seemed to have completely made up urls. Most concerningly, on the morning of the USA’s strike on Venezuela, Lumo tried convincing me that the event had never taken place, claiming there were no verified sources (it was headline news on an international scale). Even after being given sources from that same morning, it then claimed that the date was incorrect on the source, only after 2 or 3 more queries did the AI update its response. This shows the AI is not fundamentally on a level where it can be a reliable source for any kind of information, even basic questions have the potential to be incorrect. Although the intention of AI is not to think for you, many people do look to AI for knowledge and genuine help. The larger implication of this is that if the AI is this unreliable, there is NO GUARANTEE that it couldn’t accidentally produce incorrect or dangerous information that could lead to a situation where someone is hurt in some way..EstelxxavierVersion: 1.2.5

Usability issues due to keyboard space staying upDuring my very first use of this app immediately upon installing, it became apparent that reading responses would be nigh impossible. Why? Because while the keyboard disappeared upon sending my request, the space it took failed to collapse, reducing the space available to display the response to a mere 6 lines of text. Additionally, a button overlayed the response text. Its purpose seems to be to scroll down to the end of the response. Unfortunately it made it impossible to reach the text displayed next to it, for the purpose of scrolling. So the only area that would respond to scrolling exists above that button-a mere three (3) lines of text. Imagine having to scroll through several paragraphs of a response when you can see only 6 lines at a time, and can use but 3 of them to scroll through the remainder. Great app, but scrolling can improveI’m a huge fan of Lumo and its emphasis on privacy. Thank you for the dark mode; I’ve been looking forward to its rollout ever since I started testing out Lumo. Suggestions: scrolling in the app can use some tweaking. Sometimes, it seems that I can’t scroll in a chat, and I need to hit the hamburger icon at the top left or reopen the app to reset the ability to scroll. Lumo also often provides tables in responses to answers; scrolling from left to right in the table—especially the first table in an answer—can be problematic. Note: The GPT4.0 still gives fake data and fake references. But that's everywhere. Updated stars from 2 to 4. ----- Original: iPhone 13, upgraded to iOS 3-4 days ago. All apps in app store updated as of 09:00 (GMT -4). After asking a question, keyboard can be "dismissed" but the UI never readjusts, so Lumo and all its windows/panels take up just 1/3 of the phone, leaving a blank 2/3 "white space". The entire conversation has to occur in a 2" box with a 2-line reading window. I've tried logging out/in and reinstalling. "Help/Settings" also becomes totally unresponsive. Will edit stars and review when fixed. As for the LLM, it's workable on my regular Pro sub for the few questions as I am a heavy Proton user but not a heavy AI / LLM user. Totally worth itLet me preface by saying, I have never used any of the other AI's. None of them. And I didn't try this until the big update. And I've only probably used it 10 to 15 times, though many of those were extensive. And I did not use it for anything one might consider 'creative.' So in my expert opinion, it's totally worth it. Great, in contextI love the proton software suite and I’ve felt for a while the security gap in my online presence has been using LLMs like Claude and ChatGPT. Having Lumo for personal questions and tasks requiring information about myself is so much better than giving it to the big AI companies. That being said, I feel like it’s getting compared to those advanced models quite a bit and not getting the best results. Personally, I feel like it has it’s place for your personal or one-off questions, and a more advanced LLM can be used for bigger tasks like research. Pretty good!Love the privacy. Love the personalization page that will help tailor the responses to your needs. I was missing links to the sources used and told Lumo to always provide them, and it works! It’s a bit of a workaround but solve for me. Areas for improvement are the user interface. E.g. the font size is too small for me, the results display is not optimized for a small mobile phone screen, the keyboard doesn’t disappear after the prompt is sent so it blocks you from reading the response, icon and cat theme are not my taste. Very Impressive!As somewhat of a power user of Proton’s app ecosystem, of course I was intrigued by the words PRIVATE and AI coexisting (finally!). What I did not expect: Lumo is outperforming ChatGPT and Gemini chat after chat. Some suggestionsUpon first opening, on iPhones with Display Zoom enabled there are layout issues… please test with Display Zoom. Also, text size for the response area does not work with iOS’s Text Size control (like for people with vision needs), so the text is really really small. Please make it either respect iOS Text Size changes, or give an option in the app to change text size. Please (and this goes for all your apps)… use a little imagination with your icons. So many developers using white backgrounds… it’s lame and looks unfinished. I do love the cat though! It gives a lot more personality than other chat bots and I enjoy his animation. A Good Start, Needs ImprovementI was excited to hear about a privacy focused AI assistant from Proton. After some testing its limitations are clear. First, the upside: the UI is nice and very clean. The chat log and search are great. The downside is that Lumo is not nearly as robust as it competitors (yet). I find it frequently makes up sources and links even after additional prompting to verify them. Clearly, the underlying models need some work. The ability to make projects and specific agents is also missing but that should arrive soon according to the most recent road map. Finally, Lumo has limited utility for devs which to be fair is probably outside the scope of the current project which is to act as an everyday AI assistant. There is not CLI tool or extensions to add to modern IDEs (latter could be difficult to do since it depends on the privacy guarantees of the IDE). All in all this is an interesting project and its main benefit is its privacy guarantees. Subpar but improvingI enjoy Proton products. Most of them are just as good if not better than their more mainstream counterparts. However Lumo is not one of those products. In a perfect universe Lumo is an AI that is fast, accurate, and most importantly private. In its current state Lumo is just not up to par. It’s slow (though it has gotten better since launch) and fails to properly lay out information in a manner that is consistently useful. However biggest flaw… no dark mode. Much Better Now!I’ve been starting to use it more and more, and have replaced ChatGPT with it for the most part. The search functionality seems to work great, it gives me long detailed responses (though, would be cool to customize that and a bit more) and it can easily answer a good variety of responses. I do with there was dark mode though, since I also use the app at night and I don’t particularly being blinded. Proton certainly will listen to their audience, and I’ve used the “send feedback” button on responses when something wasn’t particularly right. One thing I’m glad they are improving on (though, numbered lists are still a bit of an issue) is how Lumo has the layout (titles, body, tables…) more organized and readable. Solution for the Side Menu UI GLitchI encountered a bug where promotional pop-ups (invite-a-friend ads) would appear repeatedly and erratically every time I opened the side menu. However, I found a solution: clicking the "Invite a Friend" button at the bottom of the menu once seems to fix the UI and stops the glitch. The app is working perfectly now. Excellent!The app provides very detailed and helpful explanations that include charts, links to external websites, and business or tax information. It developed a full-blown plan to start a business including social media posts, marketing, expense tracking, and legal considerations. Great, but…I have turned on every accessibility feature I can find on my iPhone but none of them help with the microscopic font size in the Lumo app on my iPhone. I even asked Lumo if it would adjust the font size and it told me to use the accessibility features on my phone, which I did, to no help, or the browser zoom but I’m using the Lumo app. Please fix this and add this feature or setting! Nice but needs workI love Proton and I love cats, so I wanted to love this. Privacy is important, but so is readability. On my smartphone, it was difficult to read answers since they often are presented in a table that requires me to swipe sideways to read. Really wish the answers were presented primarily in paragraph form. Even in paragraph form, Lumo’s text seems to spill off the edges, at least via mobile browser, forcing me to scroll a bit sideways too. (I’m using a recent non-Pro iPhone.) Results come back slower compared to ChatGPT, but I found that they were good results and the privacy factor makes this worth it. Reserving final judgementI’m a paid chat gpt plus subscriber so was very curious to try this and compare. My first conversation was 12,000 words and I was mostly pleased with it but had I not cut and pasted the first 9000 words, it would have lost the whole conversation rather than just the last 3,000 words. It said i could save the conversation by logging in, which I did, but the conversation is gone. What i liked about the conversation, which was on a science topic,, was its answer was quite thorough plus was written in a good efficient confident way. Chatgpt has a way of contradicting itself in the same paragraph which was pleased to find Lumo did not do. Likewise Chat will use words like “may” “should” “usually” that leave you constantly asking for clarification and none of that present here. I also dis not rnd up back at the starting point as i too often do with chst got and as others have noted, it did not constantly praise how each question was brilliant and how right inwas for asking it. I will update this review as i do more What i didn't like was it would drop some items from the conversation that were critical for drawing final conclusion- granted a long complicated conversation. Also of course didn't like it lost my whole conversation. Am finding now I do not even know how to start a second conversation - can you with a free plan? And found I cannot upload photos from my camera roll! I only see a way to upload files. Big inconvenience. Like others report, its not self aware- but neither is chst gpt. Good, although…I have been using Lumo since shortly after the release of the very first version, and suffice it to say, I’m quite pleased overall. My only complaint is that sometimes Lumo will repeat my messages back to me, or simply repeat the topic I am asking about to me without answering it. Version 1.2 Failure to Accept InputUpdate+++: Lumo+ fails to operate after a certain amount of inputs. Lumo+ states you have unlimited daily use but that apparently is not the case. Inputs are just thought processing for simple projects like gamification of tasks. As a paying customer this is not efficient nor sufficient. There is no error it just completely stops responding and providing a response to any input. When creating a new chat it does the exact same thing: no response. There is no help or support for this issue. What’s worse is there is no ticketing system. Update++: I think I broke Lumo. It no longer provides a response to ANYTHING. I hope it’s just an outage… Update+: (Lumo Version 1.2) With the updates, the app is performing slightly better. When a request times out you have the option to refresh it many different ways. The information of the model is straightforward from what I’ve been able to tell and doesn’t entice you like other models, *however, with the new personalization to change its personality it might enthrall someone. *I had issues with the dark theme at first but I guess it just had to replicate. (Figured this one out) There needs to be a way to rename the chats so they’re easier to find and reference. We’re getting there, slowly but surely! Old: Request timed out. It’s like arguing with a redditor, denying true objective facts and reframing reality in an effort to not be offensive. I told it not to sugar coat, and it gave me diabetes.
