Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.
Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.
Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.
Proton Mail in the press:
“Proton Mail is a Gmail-like email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes
“A new email service being developed by a group who met at MIT and CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

Proton Mail - Encrypted Email App Comments & Reviews
Proton Mail - Encrypted Email Positive Reviews
Unexpectedly Great! This mail client is awesome, it’s free and it’s really free. The upgrade plan isn’t necessary nor required for full functionality of the app. Most products on the App Store that are free have a hidden catch or cripple the free version unless you pay a subscription. Yes Proton has paid subscription to upgrade the storage options but for most individual users what they give you is plenty and if you need more than they give you then you should maybe think about how you use email as a person because 1gb is plenty for mail, if you need more then you most likely are using your mail client for something other than mail or you are too lazy to keep your mail cleaned out. The proton vpn, which is also free and unlimited usage, however the paid plan for the vpn is needed in order to pick your own exit node country. All in all the suite is great and even on macos or windows you can download the “electron” mail app and use it as an open source client for desktop use. It’s just not the official app, however it is transparent in the coding and is basically the webui with some custom css implemented in order to give you a free ui to proton. The only down side to all of this is you can’t just use proton with your favorite mail app. However I’m personally very content with my setup! Highly recommended and very secure!.Version: 4.18.0
Still needs features of other clientsThe ProtonMail app works very well for what it does. However, it’s still lacks some fairly basic features that would make its usability even better. The first feature that I would like to see, is that when you read and then delete an email, the app automatically takes you to your next email. Maybe this feature includes a switch inside of the settings, so that you can turn the feature on and off as needed. The current operation is that once you read and delete an email, that takes you back to the email list. This current method of operation really creates a lot of extra clicks. The second feature needed is the ability to filter on an email address. I have multiple protonmail email addresses and they ALL show up under one inbox. The whole idea of having multiple email addresses is to be able to use them for different purposes. If I have one address that collects important emails, it would be nice to be able to filter, or otherwise view, just those important emails and not every email received. I know both of these feature requests have been kicking around the internet for years. But, I’m still hopeful that they might be implemented. I like having a secure, encrypted email system such as protonmail. However, using it could be made easier with some tweaks. Thanks. T UPDATE: The first feature requested above exists on the app. It is a bit buried in the account menus but can be found by navigating to “settings” > “account settings” > “Jump to next email” and toggle that feature on. Thanks. T.Version: 4.17.0
Lags behind rest of ProtonMail suiteLet me begin by saying that I absolutely love ProtonMail. To the extent that it almost feels sinister in the level of brand loyalty I feel. That said, when taken in against the attention to detail and quality I see and experience throughout my everyday, while using their other components, this feels pretty lacking. It’s useful for push or when the web app is running a bit slow (which is just to be expected of a web app, and which Safari is mainly culpable), but 9/10 times, I’d rather wait and use that, as their normal version looks and feels 10x better in using. Then there’s the beta in all its sleek, dark glory, which is doubly nice (sometimes a little laggy on my phone, however it’s a beta and to be expected. Anyways, I would so love to see this app get a little more lovin’, since it has the potential, based on the foundation of its platform to be the best of its kind. This wouldn’t matter so much, were we given options to use something like Newton, Spark, Canary (what I use for other accounts currently), or whatever your personal client of choice may be. To their mobile app division’s lead dev, I would recommend taking a look at Hey (recently released by BaseCamp) for cues by which to enrich the app, but that’s just my own little suggestion. Otherwise, to the team as a whole: thanks for creating and continuing to create the best email service in existence. You guys have my support, figuratively and by way of my annual membership dues for years to come..Version: 1.12.3
Underestimated this AppInitially, I downloaded this application for sending contracts and sensitive financial data, but I have completely converted over. I’ve used Spark for years, and Airmail as well, so I was used to over-the-top features and loads of automated mailboxes and various pins, flags, etc. Proton is simplistic and minimalist in aesthetic, and when you first start toying with it, it may seem a bit underwhelming. HOWEVER, once you create some labels and folders, link your business email and all the normal “set-up” that goes along with adopting a new application, its simplicity is its strongest advantage. No more do I feel overwhelmed and under informed by what is in my mailbox. I don’t feel like I need to spend all this time setting up automations and remembering color codes (because Proton uses WORDS+COLORS! Simple thing, yet so helpful). Overall, it’s just streamlined my workflow, taken away the clutter, and simplified my mailbox life. Something I was in desperate need of! Try it, give it a chance, and I promise you won’t regret it..Version: 1.15.4
Bad updateSo, I’ve been using this app for close to, if not over a decade, and it’s largely been fantastic. It’s still probably the best email service imo, but the last update is creating significant irritation. First, they moved the compose button from the top right to the bottom right. Even knowing that, I still struggle to find it and wonder where it went at times. They also made it hover over whatever box you’re in, so if you have a habit of looking down your whole inbox before scrolling, it gets in the way of things. That second part is a minor quibble, but I *hate* it so much. It’s wildly distracting and ugly. Bigger issue though is the broken “load image” button. At first it was just gone , but now it just doesn’t work 100%. I appreciate the effort to block trackers and I still want that, a lot of emails I don’t need to see the images, but I’m a collector and I have several websites I’ve used for decades, I need to be able to see the images in their links and I’m ok with letting *those specific sites* use trackers (do I like that they do it? No. But I am willing to settle). Now I’m lucky if even half the images load *after* pressing the load images button. It’s just really frustrating and distracting. I used to love proton mail, I’ve never gotten unwanted spam since switching. But these are big irritations that came uninvited. Whatever happened to “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?”.Version: 7.5.0
Incredible app but….I’m not sure if I’m the only one who feels this way but whatever the reason is for making the app completely encrypt and lock you out of all previous emails and their contents when you have to reset your password is absolute insanity. I am guessing that it has something to do with keeping your account as secure as possible in a unprecedented way but it was absolutely heartbreaking and absolutely unbelievable to lose so much incredibly important and valuable information that I couldn’t go back and reference such as extremely important attachments or simply important informational content like contact information, times or dates etc. in my opinion I would absolutely keep that security feature because it’s in-genius but it would be nice to at least have the ability to attempt a full recovery once. And then, if that attempt fails THEN have the non negotiable security encryption enacted. This devastated me with my first account and not all of us are fully aware of the actual consequences for pressing reset and or understanding exactly what doing this actually results in. I chose to make a new account but only because I love most of the security features. Just not that one. Well intended but for non paying clients who may not be familiar with the service I think leniency would go a long way. Thank you for the service.Version: 7.9.2
Great mail app for privacy focused individualsThis application gets a lot of things right. The service blocking trackers is a wonderful future that is welcomed for someone like me who values their privacy. There are some things that the app is missing that I hope there are added in the future. The ability to choose which maps opens when you click on an address would be great. Also being able to add an email address from a third-party service through the application would be wonderful as well, instead of having to go through the website on a browser to add the email. I do also wish that there were more customization options for the layout of the app. As well as selection of colors. I like that there is a dark mode however, I wish there was an actual dark mode option for OLED screens. these are more of quality of life improvements than things that are needed in the app however, I think that the app itself and the functions and services are provides are more than adequate and definitely worth the price. EDIT: Apparently you can a third party email to this service, but only if you’re paying for a business account… If you’re paying a premium for this service that should come as a given, not something locked behind a larger paywall..Version: 4.14
Can’t send important emails/inconsistentI’ve been using Prtnmail for a while, and it has recently been brought to my attention that I haven’t been able to send emails to specific secure emails, namely to my Credit Union Financial Operations (finops) and to the Claims Adjuster of my insurance company. Additionally, I can’t use my ProtonMail email address as my primary email address for my bank account, as they don’t allow anonymous email addresses to be used by their customers. Is/are there ways to get around my issues I’m experiencing? These are important emails, and I wasn’t aware that they didn’t go through until I had contacted the aforementioned companies to follow-up with my emails. Had I not contacted my Credit Union, I would not have known that my email message didn’t get received by the finops department of my Credit Union. On the other hand, I did receive an email alert immediately after attempting to send my message to the Claims Adjuster stating that my message failed to deliver. Can somebody at ProtonMail lend me assistance or explain the reason(s) as to why my messages aren’t going through? How can I resolve this issue? This is a deal-breaker for me, and I’ll need to find a secure email server that I can use for more consistency/reliability. It makes me wonder whether or not other important email messages I had “sent” were actually sent to the recipient(s)..Version: 1.12.6
In the end encryption is vital to our basic human rightsIsn’t combat reaching everyone of us to utilize some form of end and encryption in our communications very much like governments due. When companies begin to read and index emails easily because of the PGP protocols it makes hacking seamless for nefarious actors as well as governments looking to monitor individual citizens in order to target. Therefore proton mail offers an excellent source I’ll be at a pricey cost. It is important to note that another email provider Nonnas to do note provides even more robust encryption as the email address and your subject line are encrypted. They are free service offers similar options as proton mail but far less expensive cost. They are also in the EU with much more stringent privacy standards. Neither one of these platforms are subject to US search warrants. But note it is far more important to encrypt your email address so that you can’t be targeted in the subject line is an equally important tap task to be encrypted. The downside is the GUI is poor very poor. Proton mail offers a nice GY that integrates with the devices very nicely. All in all when comparing email platforms the only other platform I’ve seen that measures up to these two is start Mail..Version: 4.0.5
Great email service, buggy iOS appI’ve been on a paid plan for several months and highly recommend ProtonMail, the service, in general. It does what it’s supposed to do, and the privacy focus is first rate. However, this iOS app suffers from two defects— one an actual security risk if unnoticed by a user, and one merely annoying. The serious defect is in the PIN/TouchID feature to lock the app. I use the PIN option (leaving TouchID disabled) and it usually works well enough, but from time to time I’ll open the app and it immediately shows my Inbox without a PIN. I contacted ProtonMail support about this, and was asked if the problem occurred after an app update. I couldn’t determine that, as I have my phone set to auto-update apps. The only workaround is to logout of the app entirely. My other apps with PIN lock features have maintained that setting for years, across major app upgrades. The annoying defect, as others have noted, is the lack of notification synchronization across devices with ProtonMail apps logged into the same account. If I read a new email message on one device, the badge on the other device’s app icon still indicates the unread message. This is by no means a deal breaker, but it should be fixed for a polished experience..Version: 1.13.1
Excellent Service Great For Privacy!I am a ProtonPlus paid user, I started with a free account but I actually paid 2 years in advance I like it so much. I really am not cool with advertisers having the ability to read my emails which often contain much personal info. The ONLY reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 (which is not really protons fault) is because there are some companies that will either not accept your email address from proton or some online stores that will cancel your order when you give them as your email. It has only happened a couple times so far. I’m pretty sure the reason they don’t accept is because they are assuming your are some kind of criminal or scammer because you have a private email. When in actuality it’s because people are starting to realize what are huge problem we are facing with these tech companies knowing every detail of our life and mind. Anyways I’m hoping as more people start to use Proton, the stigma will be erased. Also if you notify proton of this they contact the company that is denying your email. Other than that it’s great! Some great features for filtering your emails into different folders too.Version: 1.13.1
Awesome service and appI have been a Proton user for a number of years ever since I first understood the need for a more secure email service than than what the various freebies were offering. Proton’s free service is amazing, but I also wanted to support the organization and take advantage of some of their other services, so I have been a subscriber for awhile. I use the Proton email app (as well as the Proton Drive and Calendar apps) on my iPhone and iPad, and I have never had any issues on either device. The email app is nicely designed with a clean interface. The app (and web-based version) works really well, and I know that my data is more secure because of it (and I’m not being inundated with advertisements that seem to know way too much about me). I highly recommend Proton all around and am grateful that such an organization exists given the myriad companies that want your personal information in exchange for a “free” service. Keep up the great work!.Version: 4.9.0
Poor “update”!I am a paid subscriber for the last year or two and overall have been satisfied with Proton mail. Previously my only disappointment was the search feature only searches subjects and senders. But this last update has been frustrating with no discernible improvement in anything. Previously, I could swipe right to delete an email without opening it. Now, it swipes part way and bounces back to the left like a snapped rubber band. Then, usually it will disappear, but not always. Sometimes it just becomes “read” and remains in the inbox. On my iPad Pro, into addition to the new behavior described above, I also cannot move an email to a folder using my Apple Pencil. Was never a problem before but now the merest attempt to scroll in the folder list to find the right folder immediately sends the email to the nearest folder it *thinks* I touched. This was never a problem before. Yes, the inbox looks different. Not better, just different. And more kiddy colored or something. So what? I haven’t figured out yet what someone thinks they improved with this update..Version: 7.0.5
Great service, lacking a few features to make it a home runProtonMail is an excellent service for both the privacy conscious and the masses. The reason so many email providers are free is because it the provider is in a privileged position to scan all of your emails. ProtonMail sets itself apart from the rest, and doesn’t read your email, or store it in a format that they can access. I would highly recommend a paid plan, even if you don’t need any paid features. Pay for your usage with your money, not your data. However, the absence of one feature makes the ProtonMail experience painful (-1 star): No notification dismissal syncing. If I read an email on my iPad, it will still show the notification on my phone until I open the app. Almost every other mail/chat app has notification dismissal syncing, but when I asked ProtonMail about implementing this feature, they said it was not possible. If they found a way to add this feature (and it’s possible considering other services can do it), then this service would be a true 5 stars..Version: 1.11.5
Excellent all the way aroundThough there are some features missing from more traditional email applications (e.g., auto-reply, calendar integration, read receipts, pins, etc.) it handles the main concerns and uses very well. Encryption is great, though still needs a bit of growing to handle end-to-end encryption of the subject line and email addresses which is currently encrypted, but not end-to-end. I have had no issues with emails coming or going, and the app works smoothly with current functions. Having the ability to quickly encrypt emails to non-proton users is also great. While there are plenty of free services out there, they are free for a reason. With Protons’ new pricing plan, one can get the VPN, email, drive, and calendar services all under one price which is seriously worth it to me for the privacy. These apps really help to take control of your data and take control of your online presence. While I understand people who believe they have nothing to hide from bots and “anonymized” data collection, there is a really big difference between a company loosing fully encrypted data the company cannot even access, and data transmitted encrypted but stored on company data services unencrypted. Companies pay ALOT of money for granular data to target people with specific advertisements, so understand for these free services that the user is the product. Please keep up the good work, people rely on these services..Version: 4.6.0
My new primary email serviceAfter using Gmail since it was invite only way back in the mid-2000s, it was time for a change. My private emails should not be subject to scans that serve me ads and do who knows what with my data. I had a free ProtonMail account for several years but finally went all in. I purchased a paid plan, decided to setup my own custom domain, and have migrated all of my “critical” email over to ProtonMail and I won’t be looking back! The redesigned Mail app has significantly improved the end-user experience and added a lot of features that were lacking in the original app. It’s easy to use, intuitive and you certainly don’t need a degree in Computer Science to understand how it works. On the few occasions where I’ve needed to reach out to them for support, their reps were always friendly and helpful. I’m excited to see them expand their product offerings into things like cloud storage, VPN and calendar..Version: 4.0.7
Service gets 5-Stars, The new iOS app 1.5 Stars. The service is fantastic, in fact I am a subscribing customer and an so glad to have shed my spyware e-mail accounts. The iOS app was never great but it was adequate, the latest version released 4/8/22 is horrible. It has this “Conversation” mode “feature” much like the focused inbox thing in Outlook that groups e-mails together from the same sender/subject. I know that many people might love this but I hate it! The app also removes the past messages in the tread from the chronological listing in the inbox so only the latest message shows, I REALLY HATE THIS! Often I go looking for something I know I got 2 weeks ago but someone in the thread sent a message later so the message from person A from 2 weeks ago is missing and you have to open the one from Person B a day ago to find the one from Person A, Aggghhhh! Just give us options! Many people like that style but some don’t. Please give us a way to turn this off. I hate this so much that I’m trying to figure out how to reinstall the old version..Version: 3.1.4
It’s not perfect, but it’s always workedI think people often become accustom to the convenience of virtually perfect, bug-free mainstream apps by developer-giants. Protonmail is a more privacy-oriented alternative to these other mainstream apps. However, being so, and with the added security and privacy measures, I don’t expect it to be virtually the same as the native included OS mail client. I could go into detail about the various bugs I’ve encountered over the time I’ve used the app, however, these bugs have never caused the service to fail, and there are other variables with the way that I use ios that could be responsible, such as not having automatic application updates activated, etc. Bottom line is that, Protonmail has provided the alternative service that I was seeking, and has never been unusable throughout the time I’ve been using it. Five stars for end-to-end encryption. Keep up the good work..Version: 4.15
Good service, but app is missing modern featuresI recently began using ProtonMail. Overall, I like it quite a bit. I appreciate that the privacy features are basically invisible and for the user, it operates basically like one would expect email to. That said, the app has a few missing features that a modern email app should have, the absence of which make it feel subpar. Chief among these is the lack of conversation view, an oversight made more annoying by the fact that the web version of ProtonMail has this feature. The userbase’s desire for this feature was acknowledged nearly 6 years ago on ProtonMail’s feedback site and it was promised to be implemented “in the future,” yet still has not been. I, like many people, primarily access email through mobile devices and the lack of this feature and lack of progress on implementing it has made me seriously reconsider whether I will continue using ProtonMail. Another missing feature is notification syncing between devices. It’s annoying to see a badge notification on one device for an email I already read on another. The lack of support for dark mode and/or themes is also annoying, and again, this is made more annoying by the fact that this feature is present on the web app. Finally, a more minor missing feature is the inability to set custom notification sounds. On a device where I might be getting notifications from multiple apps, it’s helpful to be able to customize the notification sound so I know what app the notification is from, rather than just a generic “ding” that is used by multiple apps..Version: 1.15.11
Much better! Thank you!I am an individual who relies on a screen reader to navigate content, and I have contacted Proton numerous times, giving feedback on accessibility. I wrote a review a while ago expressing concern over BoiceOver not reading a given message/composer field. Within the last two releases, the problem no longer exists; I can now use VoiceOver to read my message before sending it. Every time I contacted someone, Proton responded within 24-48 hours, and every time they stated that they passed my feedback to the respected team. Proton has improved its accessibility, making my life easier. While there is still work that can improve the user experience for screen reader users on iPhone, it is a step in the right direction. I will continue using the service and provide advice concerning accessibility. Thank you for all your work thus far!.Version: 4.0.6
Why*Edit- I understand and don’t disagree. My request is that you consider offering a lower priced package that provides the ability to organize without the extras. For those of us who don’t need or want everything, but could really use the organization benefits. I’m not requesting this out of desire, but out of need. What you provide is exceptional and I don’t want to lose that. I appreciate all that your team offers. All I ask is that you consider the request. Broader picture perspective. If you feel that you need to charge for folders and labels please consider creating a separate paywall option at a lower price point. Charging $60 yearly baseline for the ability to organize emails is steep. The four folder + three label restriction for the free version isn’t useful. I don’t need 10 addresses or 25 calendars. I doubt many do. Is it that costly for you to provide us the ability to sort and organize? I love proton. I loved it more when there were typical options that basically every other mail app has..Version: 4.15
Proton great but..I love proton services and all that they do, especially in these days. I use other proton services and use proton mail online which is very nice. Regarding this app, it’s just OK. Not like the online service but OK. I would give proton five stars but for this particular app I’m knocking a star, I would actually knock more stars off but I realize that this mail app is in it’s just beginning form. My big issue is that I am visually impaired and it’s extremely difficult to see what’s on the screen because the Mail app uses tiny fonts. Plus it does not follow my iPads fonts settings. It’s stuck on its own tiny tiny fonts. So it makes it very difficult for people with visual issues to see. I just do not get why designers programmers default to such tiny fonts. They must be designing these apps on their phones. Plus this app seriously needs a dark mode. Hopefully all these will eventually be done and then I can rave about yet another proton app..Version: 1.15.10
Great App From a Great Company With Incomplete Key Basic FeaturesI have been a subscriber for years and I love everything about Proton and the apps they release, what they stand for, their policies, and, with the exception of stale macOS apps, the pretty consistent stream of updates and UI modernization for their apps. I would give this five stars if not for the fact that attempting to view message headers and message source in the iOS app results in only a small “Coming Soon” dialog being displayed (for a good while now). To this developer, I’m not sure why Proton will not implement these two basic features. And “Coming Soon” seems to be becoming “Maybe Coming or Maybe Not” after all the time that has passed. I hope they get around to finishing the iOS app and enabling users to inspect headers and source of a message without requiring us to leave the app and go to the Proton Mail website. These features worked fine in the app until their latest big update a while ago. So, please address this, Proton..Version: 7.2.2
Excellent Privacy Focused EmailTLDR version: great app/service for the price. App could use some creature comforts from an app like Spark or Airmail. It does what it advertises and does so at a fair price, especially if paired with their VPN product. In my opinion it works best when paired with something like gmail for the items where security isn’t as critical. That way you’re not missing out on the convenience of google for certain items (family calendars or contact sync to iDevices for example), at least until Proton is able to provide solutions for those use cases. Only suggestions to make this mail app better would be to have a one touch option for archiving a message on the screen when I read a message. Currently one must either call press to open the menu bar further then again the archive, or press the folder button at the top then choose the folder and press apply. The second functionality improvement would be use of share sheet or at least ability to export a message as a pdf. Every now and then it’s nice to be able to forward an email to someone as a text and export to pdf makes that happen easily. The other suggestions are cosmetic only, and that is more color schemes, at least a light and dark would be nice and the option to use other app icons. The lock is nice but they also have the various proton logos that would work well too..Version: 1.11.17
Poor UX changes in recent updateI will start by saying I've never once left an app review, but as a software engineer myself I feel strongly enough to share my feedback. This is a VERY minor nitpick, but I observed that a recent update had overhauled the UI. As a whole, I think it looks fine and works as expected. However, one of largely used features of mine is swipe-to-delete/trash. The functionality has been altered to more of a long half swipe + a hold, in order for the swipe to process. This is different than the previous version where a quick light swipe would delete the item. Now, a quick swipe varies in results, sometimes deleting the item, sometimes only opening the menu bar option, and occasionally registering as a down swipe and trying to refresh the page? At random times, I try to swipe delete multiple emails back-to-back, it seems to register as if i'm pulling down the screen to refresh my inbox. It is frustrating due to the fact swiping to delete is noticeably less fluid/reliable, and increasingly inconsistent with it attempting to refresh the page. I understand there are other methods to delete items, but swipe-to-delete is one of my most used actions that is noticeably worse, to the point I personally find it more frustrating to use. Again, very minor and extremely subjective, but for my use-case I find the updated way that this action is handled is definitely a downgrade, rendering the functionality rather useless for me which I find disappointing. Overall it's a fine, reliable app. I just am disappointed when well-working features are changed. I'm of the mindset of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"..Version: 7.0.4
Protonmail good; app not so muchI like proton mail except for the silly “All Mail” box which seems to store things I thought I deleted. The app doesn’t allow you to bcc yourself on all messages automatically which is something I started doing a while ago. So I find it annoying. So when I try to clear out my inbox and clear out all mail, I delete my sent messages that I hadn’t filed and lose all record unless I filed a response to the message I sent. I can learn new habits I suppose, but I wish the app allowed me to say I always want to bcc or cc myself. PS: the developer responded to my silly “all mail” comment. They like the box. But here is the issue. I use thunderbird. I go in and delete all junk and trash. However those messages stay in the all mail box. To get rid of them altogether, I have to delete the messages in the all mail box. But when I do that, it deletes all my sent messages. So deletion works one way from trash and junk but two ways from sent mail..Version: 1.15.4
Secure and spam freeI’ve been using Protonmail for the last two years, and it’s been an absolute joy to use. I had been using Gmail and became increasingly frustrated by the amount of spam that I was receiving almost every day. My attempts to create spam filters proved useless. I’m sure I had created at least 100 spam filters, and yet my inbox was polluted by uncontrollable spam emails. Changing my email address to Protonmail required informing each of my contacts of my new address, but the effort was worth it. I’m no longer being inundated by spam. My inbox isn’t cluttered with the irritating junk that filled my Gmail inbox daily. I’m a paid subscriber that allows me to have multiple folders making it easy to organize my emails by content and sender. I highly recommend Protonmail..Version: 4.16.2
UpdatedI deleted the app and reinstalled as asked in the developer response and I was able to log in this time. I have not yet had a chance to use the app, but everything looks good. Now I just wish proton gave more time to complete the steps necessary to get the larger mailbox. I’ve had more pressing concerns to attend to than going through all the steps necessary to get the additional storage and now it’s too late. If proton mail is all about privacy, then why do they require you to upload your contacts with all your contacts’ information in order to get the additional storage? What if I don’t have any contacts? Which I don’t because I’m starting over. Makes me wonder if it’s really as privacy focused as it claims. Also, the problems with the app prevented me from downloading and using the app in time enough to fulfill that requirement for additional storage. I never had a chance for the additional storage between these two issues. It’s not a problem yet, but if it becomes a problem, I’ll have to change my email AGAIN or hope I can afford a premium subscription, which again, I’m not sure I’d pay even if I could afford it since I’m required to give proton my contacts’ information in order to get the larger mailbox storage which makes me think they make at least some of their money off of data collection from customers. *** When I try to sign in, it says “user already signed in” but then doesn’t allow me passed the log in screen. So am I logged in or not? If I’m already logged in, then i should be taken to my inbox. Out whatever the open page is, I wouldn’t know because I can’t get passed the log in page..Version: 7.9.3
Clean & junk freeAlthough I never had the time to sit and read ab the newer version of proton mail and chose to stick w the original, I’ve had no difficulties. I find this email to be the easiest and once I learned more about the encryption technologies, I realized it was more trustworthy than most. I don’t use it as much as the others I have because I need it to stay as great as it is. I haven’t seen spam attempt to get into my inbox. Because I don’t have so much junk mail here, I use this email only for important things I don’t want to get buried. Like, atm, my doctor is sending me some records via email. I’ve heard that google reads all emails. That’s just not right and while I have nothing crazy shared on there, it’s just not ok to be so nosey. Honestly, I know anything shared online can be found even after deleted, even after system restored, even after accounts are removed, but at least proton mail doesn’t care what I’m talking about. I don’t even care what I’m talking about most of the time! Haha! I’d like to believe that proton mail doesn’t sell data to any party. I’d probably never know. In the world of deceptive privacy policies, and consent forms no one has time to figure out what they’re agreeing to, I’d like to say thank you. Thank you for keepin it simple. And protected. And thank you for NO COOKIES. Oh goodness. Im not a huge techie obviously, but I never accept cookies. I use your free VPN as well. Might need to get the paid one now. K this is stupidly long. I like this email. Ty krissy.Version: 4.16.1
Face ID not working to login to AppIt seems that Face ID is not working to login to the App. I’ve tried multiple times by first logging in manually and then enabling Face ID. But every time I logout and then try to log back in, Face ID is not initiated. I login manually again and see that Face ID is disabled. I enable it again, but it goes back to being disabled every time I close the App. Is the Face ID function only for access when the App is logged in, or is it designed to allow fore using Face ID to login when initially opening the app? Reply to developer: I saw your reply and do not agree because after three days of trying, the App will now allow me to login with Face ID. I don’t know what changed in the App, but I just kept doing the same thing. I have now installed the ProtonMail App on my wife’s phone and Face ID is working properly too. Increased my rating from 3 to 4 stars. Update #2: thanks for replying back to feedback so quickly! No, I did not need to choose or select any keychain or password icon. When the app is completely closed (swiping up from the bottom, on both an iphone X and XS Max, to close the ProtonMail app), then pressing the PM icon only once to open the app: FaceID now comes up immediately and after correct recognition, the PM app is unlocked and accessible. It was not like this when I first installed the app, but now it works this way..Version: 1.11.6
Great services, app needs workVery pleased with the email and vpn services. Recently bought a visionary plan to try out a year in hopes of migrating all my domains emails under proton. While the web email works perfect and the iOS apps function ok, I have a big qualm with the UI of the app for iOS. The left column sidebar has this huge separate area, that does not appear to be moveable or collapsible, that lists link to settings, bug reporting, log out, and more. This utility section separates the main mail inbox, trash, archive, etc., from the user designated folders and labels, thus requiring scrolling past the utility section to see folders. It’s an annoyance, folders should be with folders. You can see what I’m talking about in the 3rd preview pic. On the web based, this is not the case, and user creates folders & labels are right under main inbox, trash, etc. this is the way it should be, folders in the mailbox section. I really wish this would be fixed to be either the same layout as web based, or maybe user configurable. Rarely do I need settings or bug reporting, but I use folders and labels multiple times a day for different emails and organizing, and the current app makes this not very cohesive layout. Maybe nit picky, but I am not sure I’d be able to deal with moving all my emails to the service if the app keeps this layout. I’d be bummed as proton supports folders and labels for emails, which I love..Version: 1.11.4
My privacyI will suggest the best way to get 5 stars would be to have free or much much lower prices as anyone can barely afford food these days and now I’m paying for mail also I have a free gmail so it’s possible to do. The other is I chose this platform because of its security and I still have my gmail and use it for other stuff not that important and wanted to keep them separate. Now I see if I want more free storage( I’ve only been here a week ) I’ve got to combine them? I didn’t want to. I want the other stuff and want to keep the lesser stuff over there! This is my so called Hope account , the other my regular mail only some was coming this way ( doctors stuff etc., ) however I don’t want to combine them but don’t have the extra money yet , I signed up for a free account now I’m being told something new Not very happy about this!.Version: 4.12.1
Loving ProtonMailThe interface is crisp and clean. Please don’t ever change it!.Version: 1.9.0
Price too highI trust Proton and it is a good product but refuse to pay $84 Canadian for email service. Keep looking for alternative..Version: 1.15.4
Awesome BUTThey should add an option to remember your password so you don’t have to re write your password every time.Version: 1.11.14
Notifications are so badProtonMail, what happened? I’ve been a paid subscriber for years but as of lately iOS 15, I have not received any notifications until I open the app. Then all of a sudden I have 11 unread emails from days prior. At first I thought it was app corruption so I logged out of my account, deleted the app and reinstalled but it’s still broken. I’ve been waiting patiently for this to be corrected but it’s been months now. When will it be corrected?.Version: 1.15.8
Love the App … butIt would be really nice to be able to BLOCK spam in the mobile app.Version: 4.5.0
Best alternative to GooglePrivacy forward company making outstanding products. Make the switch..Version: 3.1.6
Unread notification almost always wrongThe unread count doesn’t sync between devices for notifications. So if you get a new email and read it on your computer, your iPad and iPhone still have the red “1” icon calling your attention to the app. Then you open the app, expecting to see a new email, only to find an empty mailbox. Later, you’ll have another false unread badge on your iPad, again opening the app to find no email. Basically, if you have multiple devices, then the unread mail badge will _by definition_ be wrong more than half the time. So you’re jumping between devices like whack-a-mole clearing fake notifications. I reported this bug months ago, no fix. There are also other modern features missing, like an inability to change the order of email threads (e.g. newest email at the top instead of bottom), but the constant false unread notifications are incredibly annoying and my biggest complaint..Version: 7.7.1
Updates removing features and adding bugsCan't view message headers or "view HTML" anymore (says "coming soon"??), app freezes up completely when I switch to another app and switch back, viewing messages doesn't mark them as read... wtf? where's the quality control here?.Version: 7.6.1
Unread email notifications not going away. After reading all emails, unread notifications do not disappear. I reported the bug..Version: 7.2.0
About Proton PlusGreat app and neatly organized with a simple modern design and had no problems so far. However, I don’t like how Proton Plus doesn’t offer a one time payment and instead only offers reoccurring payments like a subscription. Usually I wouldn’t mind an app having an upgradeable storage as a subscription option but it gets unfair if the desktop app is locked behind this paywall. I much rather support Proton and have access to the desktop app with a one time payment so my access on my desktop will be future proof. Please consider this..Version: 7.0.5
Bring back the state icons in threadsIn the versions prior to the version 7 (oct 2025), message headers in message threads had icons indicating the location of the message, like archived, inbox, or trash. This was super useful for organizing. Now they are hidden. You have to expand the message and then expand the header to view them. Please bring them back..Version: 7.0.5
What doesn’t workI enjoy much in Proton mail but some lacks prevent me from replacing other emails in favor of Proton. Specifically I can’t organize the Inbox or other folders by sender. I use that to clean up my folders. I now have more than 9999 emails in the Inbox. Is it too much to ask to provide that sorting tool?.Version: 7.0.4
Great appBeen trying to de-google and de-ms myself and I have mostly succeeded! (Now using proton for everything that I could remember), great alternative to google. The only thing holding me back from 5 star is the storage. I understand your not google sized and giving everyone 10GB would be expensive but it would be great. Thanks for existing proton!.Version: 4.8.0
Fantastic, worth every penny as time goes onYes, Protonmail is not cheap. But I believe in their mission. I’m happy to support their fight for privacy by default by paying for their services. Additionally, new products are being added over time. With ProtonVPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Calendar, this is a great replacement for the Gmail suite. I would like to see an online Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editor too in the future. Additionally, a family plan would be great where existing protonmail users can be brought together under one plan. Currently there is no option to do this. So please if you could add this option, that would help see higher adoption rate for your fantastic services! Cheers!.Version: 4.1.1
Needs proton calendar for iOSAmazing app but when are we going to start seeing the integration of the proton drive and proton calendar into the iOS platforms?.Version: 4.0.0
Hate new brandingWould continue using but your upgrade is terrible. Great new streamlined features I’m sure, but one major reason I chose your service was the dark and discrete look. Will be choosing a different service now due to this ugly purple and white look. So disappointed..Version: 4.0.0
Great so far!I am a bit disappointed that I cant use the encrypted calendar on my phone app… really unfortunate. Otherwise this is just what I was looking for! Canada has a similar encrypted provider, Thexyz, but, apparently, Canada doesn’t have the best security/privacy laws..Version: 1.15.10
Subscribe is not worth it.More free stuff please. Or one time purchase. Does anybody actually pay monthly for subscriptions to an app?? What a waste of money. Subscribe to any app is such a scam. Unless it providing new media like Spotify or Netflix why the hell would a monthly payment be a good idea???.Version: 3.1.4
Crash on start fixedWow, after latest “redesign” update, now the app literally crashes back to home screen at startup. So now I cannot check emails. Amazing. I am guessing you no longer support iOS 12.5.5, but if that’s the case, you should have blocked the update for this iOS version but you didn’t. And of course there’s no way to roll back. Edit: crash on start fixed quickly thank you. I like the new design but there is no dark mode option like it says in the release notes. I guess it’s because the app is following the system-wide theme setting and doesn’t have its own dark mode option. Since there is no dark mode system setting in iOS 12 so the app is never in dark mode..Version: 3.1.4
Encrypted EmailsI love the fact that this email service is encrypted. I’ve been using the free version for quite some time now. I finally bit the bullet and subscribed for a year. I was hoping that there would be a setting for font size, background colour choices, etc., but there wasn’t any. Don’t get me wrong, I love the plain look, but wouldn’t mind a little colour and being able to choose larger font for those of us who need it. I have recommended ProtonMail to my siblings and recommend it to whoever is reading this too..Version: 1.15.4
Very ImpressedI am very happy user of Proton. I’m very grateful a company like this exists. I feel well protected and that my best interested are at heart. The service it’s self runs great and easy to use. Highly recommend..Version: 1.14.1
Email I can trust & only getting better everydayProton mail and the suite is a great alternative to G suite and it’s only getting better everyday. I would rather pay a little for a service that I know isn’t stealing my information and provides great VPN protection too! I can’t wait to fully switch my email over, once I can change it with every account, but until then the mail forwarding is very helpful!.Version: 7.9.4
Works.... butThis is a fine app, but they need to include an option to choose all email and allow users to mark them as read..Version: 1.11.2
Buggy & PesteryThe phone app won’t mark emails as read once you’ve opened them; I’ve been having to load up the website to mark emails as read. It will pester you to change your plan to a paid one, and not let you close out of the dialogue until you scroll down and manually select “continue with free account.” If you’re like me and won’t pay for a service until you’ve tried it for a good, long while, this will really… colour your opinion of things. The iPad app is just the phone app stretched out; rows and rows of emails stretched out across the screen. It’s ugly, and looks lazy. I enjoy the service of Proton Mail, but these apps aren’t very good..Version: 7.2.2
Lacks basic email client featuresStill no conversation threading or dark mode after years. These features would take a few days at most to implement..Version: 1.15.4
GoodGood.Version: 7.9.3
Solid service, no tablet interfaceI still just use this on the web, since the mobile app doesn't have a dual-pane interface. Unfortunately the message pane on the web sometimes doesn't scroll through messages..Version: 7.9.4
