Good VPN but has an annoying issueThis is the undoubtedly the best free VPN you can find on the AppStore and I imagine it’s even better with paid options. Unlike a lot of other VPNs it even has a desktop version that’s just as good. I’ve used it for a while and haven’t had any major issues with it. Most other VPNs I’ve tried also slow your internet speed considerably but I’ve never had this issue even when connecting to far away servers. I live in the U.S. and have connected to Japan servers a few times and even then my internet speed is still fast enough to be functional. There is however a minor but really annoying issue I’ve encountered a few times. Sometimes when you change servers it will disconnect and then reconnect you to the same server in the same location. This is usually followed by a 20 minute wait timer. I understand that this wait timer isn’t in the premium version and that you can even pick locations with premium but regardless I feel like the change server button should always change servers. Lot of countries and some states have laws that restrict what users can access so you can see how this can be problematic when the change server button reconnects you to the same server in the same location. Other than this minor issue it’s a great VPN and I highly recommend it to anyone who is searching for a free VPN because it’s certainly the best one out there..Version: 5.9.0
Needs a temporary pause option, new UI is a little confusing and needs expanded profile optionsThere needs to be an update to be able to temporarily disconnect (pause) the VPN connection which will automatically reconnect after a period of time. Nordvpn had this, was able to pause and pick 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or 60 minutes. This is needed for some websites or apps that have trouble connecting when on VPN (if they're blocking it usually). Right now I have to manually disconnect and half the time forget to manually reconnect it. Adding a pause timed option (which should also be accessible from the widget) would greatly improve the app. Also the newer UI (6.x) on recent updates is a little confusing, and creating profiles is a lot harder. This needs improvements, such as when building a profile, should be able to do a search on the select server screen when building a new profile. Currently you can search when going into the normal countries tab, but you cannot search when building a profile. Another function that needs to be available for profiles is to be able to create a profile with multiple servers, and it will randomize between those specific servers. For example, if the country is United States, I would like to add in all of the servers for a single state for a profile (more limited than the generic random function which will not narrow down by state). I would prefer this so that VPN will still somewhat randomize but I can keep them limited to the smaller geographical area rather than the entire country..Version: 6.0.4
EastsideI’d like to start out by saying THANKYOU. For 5.5 years I’ve intermittently have used Protonmail, mainly due to extreme stalking issues particularly online. Currently I use protonmail mainly not intermittently. I love your cause. I’ve reached out to law enforcement 5x in my small city and 4x in the bigger guns the county sheriff dept. Bruh, when issues occurred in appropriate region I’ve reached out. I’ve left evidence of this problem I get no help the officers, sergeant, lutenient , or whoever they meanActually the seem embarrassingly laughing it off as the terminology like network porting they have no clue. Or they do and don’t care to take time for me until something serious happens again. I’m legal as much as the next person, I don’t meddle, unless I’m effected and it calls for attention , I’m generally Having privacy with email has been so important being a past victim of domestic violence ( from a person whom served 15 years in fla. for 2nd degree M. C and other battery, firearm n other stuff. )So now I’m installing your vpn so I can say I’m a past victim of stalking like I said due to your apps&privacy & always being put first I’m able to say I’m a past victim of domestic violence so please continue filtering thru the reviews and not allowing requests to make the app more user friendly to impose on our rights for privacy your team has worked so hard for and make privacy and security possible for users on the internet. protonmail helped keep my right to my personal things private. Thankyou protonmail and vpn. For making privacy possible and anxiety less the last like 5 years. Thankyou, Eastside..Version: 2.7.1
The Absolute BestI’ve been with proton for a little over a year and I will never use anything else for my E-mail or my VPN!! They have the lowest prices and tons of additional features even if you have a free subscription. I respect those who doesn’t like their product because everyone is entitled to their own opinions about or with services they’ve tried or anything else! I personally think Proton EVERYTHING offers the ultimate Security, Privacy Protection, Encryption Protection, Security Protection, and so much more for Every Service They Offer! YES! Including All of Their Free Services. If anyone is reading this Review then you should try out Proton's Free Services. I know you’ll everything that you’re trying I will stand by my Word that you’ll love their E-mail and/Or their VPN! I’ve NEVER like using a VPN because I always thought that it slow downed my Internet connection and for a lot more reasons but Proton has shown me that I really didn’t know or understood what VPN was all about. It actually does everything for all of my Internet usage!! So again go ahead and try Proton. What do you lose? You can try everything they have for Free. So everyone has the option to try their service(s) Absolutely Free!! So if you don’t like proton then all you have to do is delete their app or you can go online to your account and delete your account. Easy Peasy. I know you won’t do that. Everyone Will absolutely Love Everything About Proton of course for the very few that don’t. I think anyone who doesn’t like proton is because they don’t know how to use it! Just my opinion..Version: 4.1.0
App Request & NOTE for the electronically-challenged like meIMPORTANT: Turn on “Allow LAN Connections” to use personal hotspot, AirDrop, connection to tv, or anything that requires you to be on the same network. Took me awhile to figure that out on my own since networking & any moderately advanced stuff like that is mostly over my head.. and I definitely am not the only person who never had a reason to have to know that stuff therefore it’s like a foreign language that keeps advancing faster than my ADHD brain can comprehend most the vast majority of the stacks of help articles I’ll have the patience to understand before my brain explodes. MY PREVIOUS POST👉🏼[App Request]: Considering that you guys specialize in privacy, it would be nice if you offered a comprehensive service that removes peoples private information from Internet Data Brokers, other people search engines, and indexing websites. I already use one service to do this, but they are not comprehensive in the sites they remove from, they don’t check back often enough before information gets put back up on the sites (or request that ALL information on a person be restricted forever), and they don’t offer to help remove from sites that require you to give the site an ID to have your information removed(which just confirms that they have the right identity and is counterproductive), and they don’t offer removals from indexing websites like the Internet archive. if proton offered a fully comprehensive removal service that actually worked the way it’s supposed to, I would be one of the first to sign up..Version: 6.3.2
Buyer BewareThe VPN service is ok, nothing fancy, no bells and whistles, but it works. However, customer service is terrible. I purchased a 2-yr plan for Proton VPN on April 1st for $86 and opted to get their email service as well. I had an issue with the email service and canceled it on May 1st. Unfortunately, by canceling the email service it also canceled the VPN service. I contacted the help desk to try and reinstate the VPN. Their representative “Sonny” gave me $84 worth of credits to apply for a new VPN account. However, when I went to the site where they directed me to use the credits, the cost of the 2-yr plan was $119. After several emails back and forth, they would not offer me the VPN at the original price of $86 I paid, nor would they refund any money to my VISA card. They gave excuses about me signing up with one of their affiliate companies (which I didn’t) and that the 30-day trial period had passed (which it didn’t). Their customer service is run through Zendesk, so you’re lucky to get one email response from them a day. Even if you reply to one of their emails within a few minutes of receipt, you won’t get a reply from them for another 24 hours. So just be aware that the 30-day free trial guarantee is not really guaranteed and they are not customer friendly..Version: 6.0.5
Read and learn what a VPN is, so you can know what preferences you are missing!I have had Proton mail and Proton VPN for years. I read several reviews that were bad. Almost all was because the person just did not know where to look to change a preference or just does not know anything about how a VPN works. I have set up several profiles as to where I want to connect. Always use Secure Core. I like that I can change to any location, just by clicking on a profile I created. If one profile server speed is slow, I click on another. Guys, read the instructions and learn how a VPN works, it’s capabilities and how to customize it like you want it. Whatever VPN you use, make sure the servers are not in the U. S. And a country that is big on people’s right to privacy. Sad but true, the U.S is at the top of collecting, mining & spying. And I don’t support using VPN’s for criminal activities. I was an LEO for 27 yrs and I do not believe in just grabbing everyone’s metadata off their cells at a Super Bowl just because they can. Get a warrant!! In closing, I tried dozens of VPN’s and then ran many security test over the years . Proton passes them all. The only way Proton will fail it’s customer base, is folding from political pressure. But I think these guys & girls work at Proton for a reason. And that reason is because privacy matters..Version: 2.3.6
Stellar service, app interface could be simplified.First and foremost, Proton’s VPN service itself is great and it’s definitely worth purchasing a subscription. I am a paid subscriber, using Proton VPN on MacOS and iOS, and have a few suggestions about the application interfaces. It might be helpful to sort servers first by continent, and then group countries regionally. Many users may never use VPN access based in certain regions and sorting by continent first would simplify the search. I also think for countries with a lot of servers in different regions, additional regional categories (like states for US) might again assist with less scrolling to find what is sought. Finally, especially with the iOS app, the option to disable “always on VPN” would be appreciated to facilitate conservation of battery life more easily, as the VPN will often reconnect if switched up using the iOS toggles. Proton offers servers in a truly impressive array of countries and I have found the service to be reliable and stable, and speeds to be plenty fast enough for my usage. Their free VPN service is also unparalleled and it’s wild that anyone finds fault with it..Version: 5.9.0
Pretty goodWell, I’ve mostly used this on my PC but recently installed it on my iPhone. Both seem to work great with very rare issues that are easy enough to fix by simply restarting the app. I do miss the feature in which users could pick from the free servers, but there’s probably a reason that feature was removed. I know it was available on PC but not sure if it was ever available on iOS. Anyway, this is a good VPN with a decent and reliable free plan. I’ve utilized proton for a while, including their email service, and I feel they do their best to provide good, secure products. The only thing I would change is the aforementioned option of choosing from the free servers on the free plan just because I absolutely under no circumstances want to use US servers ever. Overall, it’s good though and the best that I have used; I’ve used many such services including paid VPNs, and this has been the most reliable. Edit: I realize on the free plan it automatically connects to the fastest server. I would still like it better if the option to pick was still there like it was before. It’s fine if we only have a handful of countries to pick from. And it’s fine if they aren’t the fastest. That’s part of it being free. But getting stiffed with an American IP address just because it is apparently the fastest (it isn’t usually much different from one of the other countries available to free users) is really a bummer every time. Still love Proton though and they still provide excellent quality products. Hoping a solution arises for this one snag that keeps it from being the perfect free VPN. Either way I’m always recommending them to others for their various products..Version: 5.9.0
Thank You For Your ProductThank you for your product and for replying. Most of the intrusions happened in person at Coffee Shops, etc.. I know what was being done, but I don’t know what scripts they used to get in. However, the hacking seems to have halted after doing the following: Export and save the Proton VPN Log (which should also include info. about the Proton Mail App. [Someone stole the original Log via the Files App.]) Uninstall and reinstall Proton Products. Uninstall and reinstall Tubi (While using ProtonVPN, someone was able to intercept Tubi’s Location Network.) Install and offload Apple Support, and Apple Store Apps. (Before ever installing these two Apps., they mysteriously appeared for one-second while I was configuring the Applications’. location status in Screen Time.) Disallow App Store installs and Delete in Screen Time. Disallow all sharing capabilities, disallow “Learn From This App” for all Apps., and also limit Web Content in Screen Time. Transferred all documents and Photos to an encrypted File Manager. Changed my Apple I.D. (This one is tricky but can be done, legally.) Changed my Telephone Update: Unfortunately , after using this VPN for a few months, I discovered that hackers use it quite often as a back door. It only hide my location from those who are not near me physically..Version: 5.8.0
Love the app thanks you for creating it.After last update I lost all my saved profiles. It wasn’t that big a deal because generally make another when the current one is over 50% usage. Fortunately there are lots to choose from. I love when Facebook and other platforms think I’m in a different state. I did have to explain to my bank but they understood immediately. I log into my mother’s bank using the phone and no VPN (I generally don’t use WiFi unless at home). I know that my internet provider can get my information but I’m not that paranoid yet. I love the idea that you will not sell, reveal my information. In fact I don’t think they can because the encryption is done as it should be were even they can’t get the information. It’s a comfort to not be tracked or harassed and I can say anything I want without being cancelled. Unless the person I’m talking to does so and that is between us. Thanks for a wonderful app.Version: 5.1.6
Disconnects maybe fixed with IKEv2Update: after reporting the issues I’ve had to support they basically wanted me to spend a week or two of my life testing every combination of changes and waiting for random disconnects. No thanks, and I gave up and used another VPN and deleted Proton. A few weeks later I happened to read a response to a similar bad review where support said to try the IKEv2 protocol because they think the disconnect issue is with WireGuard. Well I am here after about 2 weeks using IKEv2 and there has not been a single disconnect leaving the phone without VPN running. Most definitely the problem is WireGuard. ######################### Update: took another star off. Tried the latest version 3.0.1 which has a fix for quickly reconnecting after waking. Yesterday I happened to check VPN status while on cellular after being on Wi-Fi most of the day. Again, Proton VPN had quietly disconnected some time during the day and left me merrily working away with no VPN running at all. This is worse than no VPN at all. ########################## Really wish I could give this VPN 5 stars. Like the privacy policy, the NetShield feature, speed, and simple UI. But the disconnection is a real problem. So many others report it, and ok iOS has an issue but I have used other VPNs for years and do not recall them disconnecting completely unknown to me for who knows how long until I happen to check. Just happened again, at least an hour merrily using my phone and just happen to check the ProtonVPN widget and it offers to Quick Connect…. Huh? I can’t use the kill switch because I need to access local network devices. Really want to use ProtonVPN but it makes no sense if it is off for long periods without my knowledge. Others have clearly solved this..Version: 4.0.0
VPN when it works…I subscribed to the Proton Plus version of the VPN service so i could browse on US servers while traveling overseas with no issue. My friend recommended this app but i’m starting to regret making this purchase. The VPN only worked for an hour or two before disconnecting and now it won’t connect to any foreign servers whatsoever. Toggled all of the protective settings in order to connect to VPN in the US but it still does not work. I’ve closed and rebooted the app, restarted my phone and still can’t connect. It also won’t connect to any other country outside of my current location. If i’m unable to connect to servers of my choice, this paid service is simply ineffective. What gets me is that there’s an option on the app to submit an error report. If you try to enter feedback, the error report comes back with an error of its own. It states there was an error and the request has timed out. This is a pretty subpar standard for troubleshooting and customer support. Really glad that I didn’t pay for more than the one month. I wanted to try it first and i’m glad i eased into this purchase. Back to the drawing board for a real VPN service..Version: 5.0.1
Promising, but not there yetAll-in-all, a promising privacy tool, but my identity is getting leaked periodically. The Kill switch was showing active, but I was able to get online and search result with ads for my location. This does not always happen, but a Kill switch should be just that—kill my connection if the vpn is not connected. I took it for granted that if I was online, the vpn was active. Now I have to be more cautious. UPDATE: I’ve updated the app, have Kill switch on, and my network traffic is still not blocked when disconnected from Proton VPN. My local IP shows. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Kill switch mean all internet traffic will be blocked, i.e. I can’t get online, unless I’m connected via Proton VPN? UPDATE: 2024, August: Proton VPN kill switch on iOS still doesn’t work consistently. I like the Proton privacy suite of software but this is frustrating that years after first noticing it my IP is leaked if Proton VPN is not connected. I am able to go online and get my IP via a browser. UPDATE: 2025, April: have been dealing with the iOS kill switch issue still. I’m not sure when it comes back, but it inevitably does, after resetting everything..Version: 5.9.0
Privacy and Security ConcernsI purchased an annual subscription to Proton VPN and their mail service. I have been experiencing issues with both. I noticed that my iPhone 15 was hacked from Proton’s email application logs. I can see somebody attempting to access my account over and over again. They are being denied access because I have lock protection set up. I changed my password and the logs show that they got through the login and 2fa with a saved password, then they are ultimately denied access due to lock protection. The only place that I save passwords is my iPhone. The only place that I receive 2nd codes is also, my iPhone. I contacted Proton. They basically told me that they are just logs, don’t contain my personal information and don’t show login attempts. They definitely show login attempts. I don’t why they can’t see denied access, lock protection required over and over again. I became concerned with my VPN when I noticed in the logs something about deprecating protocols. I also noticed the statement to discourage Secure Core. Secure Core is a security feature that I use. I noticed in the logs that my NAT would be set to moderate. That’s not how I set the account up. Moderate NAT reduces your security. I also noticed in the logs that the kill switch would be turned back on. This should always be on. I asked for a prorated refund. I was denied. I gave them three stars because Customer Support is responsive and their services are easy to use. Reply to Proton’s Response. I have had so many support tickets regarding this that I don’t keep track. I last received a message early this morning asking for information related to my email account. I sent a couple of screenshots showing denied access, lock protection required. As far as the VPN issues goes, I have screenshots of everything..Version: 5.4.2
Reliable VPN, drains batteryUpdate - battery drain: I want to update my review after further day-to-day use of ProtonVPN. I have noticed battery drain from the app is substantially higher than other VPN apps. I am seeing a confident 40%+ increase in drain compared to the priors two apps I used. I previously used Private Internet Access and another VPN app, all are setup to use WireGuard for connections. For Proton I use WireGuard by default but have Smart protocols enabled, which may be switching me to more inefficient protocols and therefore the drain? I am not sure what about Proton’s implementation is causing the drain to be so substantial but my ability to have a VPN enabled at all times is not possible with this app. I constantly have to disable VPN and be more conscious of battery conservation each day due to this problem. It’s still a great and robust app, but i think it needs more work on fixing this issue. —- My prior rating of this VPN was 1 star due to its initial offering having some serious gaps. I’ve now revisited the app and can say I’m impressed with the features and polish that has been introduced over time. Keep up the great work devs.Version: 4.2.3
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Privacy. Great when it works.I’m a paid user, have been using proton for over 5 years. Love it, from the privacy aspect it’s amazing. However, connection is the issue. Especially in the last six months. Sometimes I’ll be fine and it’ll stay connected with zero issues for a week. Other times, it simply won’t load/connect anywhere for hours on end. Or it will connect, and by the time I go to load a page, it’s already disconnected. It’s extremely frustrating. This happens across all devices. It is definitely not my internet/phone service, as I can get online perfectly fine once it’s disconnected. Currently, I’ve been experiencing issues almost every day, at least twice. I understand that every server/platform will have some issues. But it’s been getting worse for the last six months, to the point I just give up and work on something else for a couple hours. There’s definitely a need for assessment and fixes to whatever is causing the widespread ongoing connectivity issues..Version: 5.9.0
After last iOS update constantly DISCONNECTSI was very happy with this app until recently. I am just assuming it had something to do with the last iOS update. It has become very buggy and DISCONNECTS very often even though I have the kill switch toggled on. It seems to me as though all traffic should be stopped/not allowed at all if the vpn is disconnected with this kill switch on—is this not correct??? Because I have no warning, no sign at all that it has even disconnected. So I find that I have to check now every couple of minutes if I want to use this- as of now- worthless app. Sure enough, it will say “ connected for 3 minutes “, etc. In other words, I will have been online without any warning of a disconnect and no idea of how to make this stop happening. I have reinstalled, phone off/ on, cleared history, data in each browser just in case because I do not have a clue. I saw that this app has not been updated in 2 months, whereas most others update more often. Is this an issue? Please, developers help me to understand this issue. Thanks!.Version: 5.4.2
Would rate 5 stars if mine wasn’t buggedI am on IOS, and I have used this app countless times for the past year and a half with no issues. The only reason I ever purposefully turned it off was because sometimes other apps would momentarily glitch as a result of the vpn, but this was extremely rare. However, I recently turned it off while trying to figure out why another app wasn’t working correctly, and found that when I turned it back on, it no longer worked correctly. My phone would tell me it’s connected, but then on apps such as Reddit, I found some of my accounts were being banned due to a past IP ban, despite my phone saying the VPN was connected. I had been using the VPN to circumvent these bans previously as I don’t get out the house much currently, and life gets pretty lonely for me so it’s nice(and fun) to hop onto a platform like Reddit and engage in the civil internet discourse of comment sections. Over all, it’s a very functional VPN, but I have to give it 4 stars because of this recent bug I’ve noticed..Version: 4.1.0
No Interactive WidgetsSolid VPN but the lack of interactive widgets with iOS 17 make it kind of annoying to turn on and off. Some apps won’t function with it on. UPDATE: To clarify, the only widget on iOS currently is the Today View Widget. It only shows at the bottom of the other widgets. Thus it can’t be moved string and placed on a Home Screen. Also, it is not interactive. I’d like to see a few different options. 1) The ability to be able to have the ProtonVPN widget on my Home Screen with a simple connect/disconnect option that is interactive. 2) A larger widget option would also be nice that would allow me to connect to specific VPN profiles I’ve created. I downloaded SurfShark today just to see if it has interactive widgets that can be placed on the Home Screen and it does. I really don’t want to switch services, but this is a pretty basic feature that most apps have. Regarding, apps that don’t work with it on is because I have the ad blocker turned on. So I’d like to be able to toggle the VPN off with an interactive widget before launching those apps..Version: 4.4.2
Could be 5 starsUpdate: Aug 14, 2021 - I don’t know if it’s an iOS limitation but I always have to wait around 5-8 seconds for the VPN to connect when I unlock the phone when it’s been locked for a bit. Is the OS freezing the app in the RAM? Enabling background app refresh for this app made no difference as well. Also I have mistakenly thought the “kill switch” on the iOS app was the “permanent kill switch” that I use on desktop. Hopefully it can be added later on. I’ve raised the rating another star because Proton actively reads & responds to their reviews. Quality of life wishlist: 1. Switching the quick connect button to where the Connected/Not connected top bar is and vice versa. I have to slowly and consciously avoid swiping up from the bottom middle so I don’t accidentally disconnect. 2. “Malware & ads” option for Netshield. I think blocking the tracking is breaking some of my restaurant apps since my rewards won’t load unless I do malware only. 3. Profiles also saves the selected Netshield option. 4. Option to make backup of the profiles onto local storage of device. I noticed my profiles were gone when I reinstalled because of 2.5.1 issue. 5. Search box for the server list like the desktop app. Those of us looking for a country or using a server name that starts with a letter in the second half of the alphabet need to scroll a lot more. 6. Server filters for both mobile & desktop app. (Countries, server type, high load, etc.).Version: 2.6.1
I know who I am dealing with and excellent protectionI give ProtonVPN five stars because its service provides top-level encryption and protection against all of the threats to privacy and security that VPN can protect against. Its jurisdiction, Switzerland, provides good protection of privacy, requiring rigorous proof in Swiss courts that a user has breached the law in ways that divest him of the privacy protections of Swiss law, and even then, only after an order from the Swiss courts, ProtonVPN’s no-logs policy, except for a timestamp that cannot be used to identify or track a user, avails the movant for the warrant nothing, at least for the user’s past internet activity. And Swiss law requires that the target of surveillance be eventually notified of that surveillance and who is doing it. Finally, and this came to be most important, ProtonVPN discloses its owners and executives so that the community of journalists and users and advocates for privacy can vet them. That, as of this writing, is not true of either NordVPN or ExpressVPN. After failing to identify NordVPN’s owners and executive officers, I stopped using its service, because no can trust those who they don’t know. And NordVPN and ExpressVPN’s justifications for not disclosing their owners and executives is risible. Though reviewer, users, and tech journalists don’t seem to know who ExpressVPN and NordVPN’s owners and executives are, it is absurd to think that the likes of MI6, CIA, NSA, Mossad, China’s Ministry of State Security, and other elite intelligence and law enforcement agencies don’t. ProtonVPN discloses its owners and executives so that we can vet them and so that a free press, Switzerland and other democratic Western law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and we, the people, can protect them, which is the only protection that any honest VPN’s owner and executive has..Version: 1.3.6
Hesitant Five StarsIf you’re a Proton user, you’ve probably done the research already. For those of you who came here unprepared, allow me to nutshell it for you: Proton is very good at VPNing and one of the few big boys who you can -objectively- trust. However, the community of users tend to be very staunch in their opinions on the services, whether they’re pleased or otherwise. And as much as you can trust the claims Proton makes, you can- almost to the same extent- trust the validity of the community’s consistent complaints (new rollouts vs improving existing products, mobile apps dropping service w/o notifications, pricing, etc) So basically; this is not a “set it and forget it” VPN app. If you know what you need and Proton fits that niche, then they should absolutely be your choice. If you need a VPN so you feel confident that Comcast/Spectrum/whatever can’t see EVERY porn you watch, every time, then I’d look elsewhere..Version: 5.0.0
Phenomenal Experience! My concern for privacy and security has grown immensely the past few years, as my awareness grew. After much research and trials, Proton Technologies Mail + VPN services have truly been the best thus far to my experience, of course. I began with the free email account and made my way to the free VPN. Ultimately, I grew to enjoy & appreciate both Mail + VPN; therefore, I decided to upgrade to the Mail + VPN Plus (combo) subscription. The rest is history...I have no complaints. My transition from other mainstream services for personal email to Proton Mail have been relatively painless. There FAQs and fidelity in step-by-step guidance via their web-page(s) makes “doing it yourself” plausible. The intricacies to computer technology and all it entails can be intimidating, but do not worry, help is standing-by. Thank you Proton Technologies personnel from the bottom-up (& vice versa) for making this possible. I certainly appreciate all your efforts. Take care & Peace!.Version: 2.3.3
Ignore negative reviews, and read this!Look when I found this app on a website called Tom’s Guide and saw the many reviews talking about connectivity issues, I definitely had low expectations for this app. But now using it myself, it hasn’t had any issues with disconnecting off of my phone while even turning it off. However just to let know some people, for me it did take a little bit longer sometimes to get connected to let’s say a US server. But honestly apart from that, this is definitely a decent VPN, especially for the fact that I’m using their free plan and it still works like a normal VPN. I’m still giving this 5 stars even with how sometimes it takes long to connect, because it’s not useless or not working like how many other people have been saying. And it definitely does work very well especially for completing free..Version: 4.3.0
Experiencing slower internet speeds b/c of higher uploads than downloads in bandwidthI’ve been using Proton for about 5 months now, and NEVER have I ever had this problem until mid-October to now. Recently, I’ve had constant issues (that’ll definitely get worse from here) where the uploads in Proton’s bandwidth reached over 1MB+ opposed to downloads ranging from 1-50, and it’s causing the wifi connection to be slow and dysfunctional. It’s honestly disappointing and frustrating to go through this considering Proton’s been working fine for me until October. I don’t know the cause of it—I’m wanting to, but I am so very certain it is not because of my server location (I always choose one closest to my area), nor my actual wifi. To whoever this may concern—if you can help me, could you give me solutions on how to stop my Proton uploads on the bandwidth from skyrocketing, downloads being low, and the connection consequently slowing down? Thanks, I would really appreciate the help..Version: 6.6.3
Fast & Secure VPN, missing a few features. To start off this VPN and its connections are fast and secure. I’ve loved using this app. I will say that I would like some key features that seem to missing. In particular, a feature for “Auto Connect” would be great. Being able to choose if the VPN is always on, or if it only connects on WiFi networks, along with the ability to set specific networks as trusted so the VPN isn’t running on something like my home network, that already has a VPN through the router. At the moment you have to manually turn the VPN on and off which is tedious. Aside from that there’s plenty of servers to choose from and I love that the app tells you which ones are great for streaming. VPNs generally slow your speeds as well but I haven’t had that issue with Proton at all. Overall a great service and a well functioning app. Just needs some simple QoL feature updates. Thanks :).Version: 5.3.0
GreatWould be nice if you didnt clear the data saving, ad blocking etc statistics every time you disconnect. Please keep them Ive been using torguard since 2016 (kinda mistake since its part of the 5eyes etc) but it played its part and did what it needed to. I gave nord vpn a couple tried but always refunded since the app on pc was extremely unstable every time i sampled it — streams would stutter buffer like crazy and rebooting my pc with the killswitch on would force me to disable the switch and log into my browser just to log into the pc app, killing my privacy. This app, on pc and mobile, seems to work great thus far. Been using the Core servers and the speed isnt too bad. My mind is more at ease using this knowing its so much more private than torguard and way more stable than nord. Im on the Pro version. Happy purchase so far..Version: 6.6.3
No fault toleranceThis app does not do anything to maintain the connection. After a server is selected for connection the client doesn't check if that server can pass traffic so you have to manually switch back and forth between your browser and ProtonVPN checking to see if the server you selected works. Additionally, the app doesn't care if the server you connected to is overloaded and slow or stops working. Other VPN apps will ping a predetermined host intermittently and if the connection isn't working they will switch to another server from a user-selected list. I'm honestly getting a bit tired of Proton's overall minimalist approach to their service offering. Their attitude seems to be "we're not competing with other services so why should we try to offer competitive features" which often leads to things like their advert for their Drive product showing a prominent search box when in fact there is no search feature in that product..Version: 5.4.2
Security seems great. Optimization is poorBeen using proton VPN for various years. Soundly believe in their methods for privacy and security. I am glad they continuously add servers and improve their products. However, I have to rate the iOS version at a 3. I feel that the VPN on iPhone is buggy. Often times I notice certain apps get stalled trying to pull data, the fix very often is the Proton VPN connection is idling. As soon as I open the Proton VPN app, it reconnects. That usually resolves the other apps getting stalled. Not sure why this is. I believe that a VPN should reconnect automatic when the connection to a particular server is poor and server connections should be better balanced. Also, when I select the quickest connection, it often does not take me to the quickest server. I hope Proton fixes these issues soon..Version: 5.3.0
Easy to use; works well,Further Update: Has worked flawlessly since the update below. No issues whatsoever. Five stars. Update: The app is working well now. I mentioned I was having very slow or no connectivity. It also turned out that the app was disconnecting my Wifi when I tried to connect to a server. I’m not sure why. I restarted the iPad a few times and finally uninstalled / reinstalled the app and restarted again and it appears to be back to normal functionality. Maybe there had just been a glitch in the update. In any event, like all Proton Services, this is performing well now. It’s well-worth subscribing to the suite of services offered by Proton. I have been a subscriber to their services for some time now and recommend them to anyone looking for secure email / drive etc..Version: 6.3.2
Keep your expectations low!!!I moved to ProtonVPN from Nord because of the better privacy policy of the ProtonVPN. I have been using ProtonMail for a long time & it is great. I started using it on my iPhone & MacBook. But man o man, it is sooooo veeery slow. Nord was much much much faster. On a 1Gigabit LAN connection it reduces speed by more than 10X. On Wifi it is much worse. It constantly keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. I hardly had any such issues on Nord. I wish the developers figure out what is wrong. Speed reduction is expected while on a VPN connection & we who choose to make such compromises never expect a 10X reduction in speed and frequent disconnections. A VPN is supposed to run in background but when the speed is sooooo slow it frustratingly makes a person realize you are on a VPN connection. The speeds we get here are expected on the hawkish VPN services not on a reputable company like Proton Technologies. Hope it gets figured out soon..Version: 3.0.1
Top Notch - Very Few GlitchesThis is certainly an excellent product and service. Would recommend for anyone with personal - and even professional - privacy concerns. I’ve had a few user-related issues getting to know how to use it, but this part of my personal learning curve. I wish KillSwitch could be used on my iPhone (a feature on the mac). I am not keen on network vulnerability when my phone disconnects from a wifi signal and needs to use a cellular signal instead. Overall, I offer 5-Stars as I'm sure it must be increasingly complicated to create a truly secure connection in a world of increasing privacy intrusion. Thank you for creating this excellent solution, as well as all the Proton products that I use as well..Version: 1.3.5
